The Power of Three Asks

00:00:00
Speaker
And I'm sure we've all had that time where you're going to propose something, you're going to do a pitch, and you do the pitch, and they say no. Or the decision maker says no, and you don't have anything else.
00:00:14
Speaker
two other things that I was going to offer my services for. Now, the MC thing came up, but that's a lesson I share with a lot of people. The three asks, always have three. You never want to leave a pitch with nothing. Even if you're getting the contact name of the personal organization and email address and phone number, and at least if you get that opportunity to follow up with them in a few months, you left with something, you didn't leave with nothing.

00:01:16
Speaker
Welcome to another exciting episode of the podcast, The Thought Leader Revolution. I'm your host, Nicky Ballouin. Boy, do we have an incredible guest lined up for you today. I met this gentleman at an exclusive VIP lecture.
00:01:33
Speaker
given by Dr. Warren Farrell, who's been a past guest on the show back in November 2018. He was actually the master of ceremonies. He is the host of the incredible show Epic Conversations. I am speaking, of course, of none other than the one.
00:01:54
Speaker
The only, the legendary Dr. Vibe. Welcome to the show, Dr. Vibe. Greetings, Nicky. How are you? When I get to speak to the great Dr. Vibe, I feel fantastic. And folks, he says that even more just talking offline. So don't think it's just he's doing it for this conversation. He's consistent with that. Hey, well said. Dr. Vibe, the men and women that listen to this show,
00:02:20
Speaker
are all heroes. They all have a gift. They're sharing that gift with the world. They want to make a difference with the world. They listen to the show because they want to get some hope from you and from me. They want to learn from you. And in order for them to be able to learn from you, they need to relate to you. They need to connect to you. They need to hear your backstory. So tell us your backstory. How did you get to be the great Dr. Bob?
00:02:45
Speaker
Well, how I became Dr. Vive, it's an interesting story. Many years ago, when I had hair, I was working at Adidas Canada as an inside sales rep for their independent retail soccer accounts. And I was representing them inside. And at the same time, I was a marketing representative for a major Canadian record label. For some people, they would say, wow, especially younger people, that's a dream jobs like you're working with.
00:03:12
Speaker
athletic stuff, sports company, and you're also working entertainment. One evening, during my stay at Adidas, they were having a Christmas party, and I was really getting into the music. One of the product managers, I won't give his name, but I know it's still off by heart, he said, man, you got the vibe, you're Dr. Vibe, and that's how it stuck. I've kept that for many, many, many years. That's a simple story. These days, it's just stories I just share, whether they're my own or the ones that are given through me.
00:03:42
Speaker
So Dr. Vibe, you've got quite the show. You have these epic conversations with a whole variety of people. Yet on top of that, you do a lot of work to help men in particular. In 2019, I would say that many men feel lost. And thought leaders like you are trying to show them the way. So I'd like you to expand on that if you could, please.

Supporting Fathers at Canada's Family Center

00:04:13
Speaker
Yeah, well, I have a full-time gig. I work at Canada's Only Father Focus Family Center. And what I do is I do facilitation. I do parenting courses for fathers.
00:04:24
Speaker
I do support for fathers, especially those who are going through custody challenges in the court system. And I also do work for men's organizations like Men in Masculinity, which I've been a part of now for about two years. And thank you for mentioning where we met when I was Master of Ceremonies for the event, and especially for Dr. Warren Farrell. I've also been involved for over six years as a feature contributor for the Good Men Project.
00:04:50
Speaker
one of the most viewed sites in the world for men. I'm also a member of the steering committee for an organization called Dad Central, which is a national fathering organization in Canada. I realized in my journey that men need help. We all need help, but specifically men, and I'm a firm believer, this is me, that the better men are in society, the better society and our families and the world will be.
00:05:16
Speaker
I'm in a very nice zone these days that I work at an organization that focuses fathers and men. And I also do a lot of work with men outside of that. That has become a very interesting sweet spot for me. And one of the key things I would say for not, I don't like the word dealing with sharing with men or helping men be better is to listen to their story. Everybody has a story to tell.
00:05:42
Speaker
And I believe that most people's stories are worth six figures, but the most important thing is that there's a lot of men out there that haven't had a chance to share their story. And when you give an opportunity for a man to share his story, that means that you're at his level and you're gaining his trust, which is a very important thing.
00:06:01
Speaker
You know what? Every man has a story. I actually saw that in an ad by a company called William Henry. And they had a photo of a man wearing a leather jacket riding a motorcycle off into the sunset. And it's very true. And a lot of men today feel like
00:06:19
Speaker
no one wants to listen to their story. Their story isn't worth listening to. And what you do is you show them, hey man, your story is valuable, your story matters, and your story is one that can help you transcend the negativity of your life and move toward positivity, move toward
00:06:38
Speaker
making your life a glorious one so you can be a better man, a better husband, a better father, a better provider. You can be a man who lives with purpose. You can be a man who achieves success. And I know all these things are things that you embody and you preach. What you do is very powerful. I really like that you got involved with the men in masculinity summit. How did that come about and why is the work that they're doing so important?

The Value of Relationships Over Connections

00:07:04
Speaker
Well, it's interesting. One of the key things I share with people is relationships are everything. I don't like the word connections. I like the word relationships. So this is how it happened. I was, as I said, been involved with the Good Men project for a number of years. And a few years ago, one of the executive editors reached out to me saying, Hey, Dr. Vibe, there's an organization in Toronto that's having this conference called Men in Masculinity. They're looking to see if they can get their message out.
00:07:30
Speaker
And they turned to me. Now, again, if I didn't have that relationship with the Good Men Project, they wouldn't have brought me into the loop. So I spoke with a representative from the Men in Match and Lindy Conference. They asked me, you know, could you do some interviews? Some conversation said, sure. And then they invited me to their VIP night the year before you came. And the speaker that night was a gentleman named Dr. John Izzo. And what we did during that evening is, pardon me, we did circles.
00:08:01
Speaker
We did some group work in circles and we were chatting and I didn't know Dr. John Izzo. I first met him during that circle conversation. And then after we finished our circle group work, he gets up on stage and go, oh, he's the keynote speaker of the night. And then by a blessing, he mentioned about four or five different aspects of our conversation in his presentation. So remember,
00:08:28
Speaker
myself and Dr. John Izzo did not know each other before that evening. And he found our conversation so powerful that he mentioned aspects of it during his presentation. He blended it into his presentation that evening. After that, the people at Metamasti going like, okay, we know this guy does conversations online, but wow, like he must have something going on for our guest speaker to mention him like that.
00:08:57
Speaker
So I offered to help them out to provide some thought leadership in some areas for them. And now I'm a member of their core team, which led to another story last year's conference. They were looking for speakers and I put in a speakers app. So I went down to the office where they were having a core team meeting and they basically said, well, Dr. Vi, we don't want you to speak. I go, okay. Can I lead a panel discussion? No.
00:09:26
Speaker
Uh, can I volunteer? No, we want you to MC. I said, okay. And I just said, that's unreal, man. That's awesome. And that blends into something. One of my practices for your audience, I believe in something called the three asks. And what that is is, and I'm sure we've all had that time where you're going to propose something or we're going to do a pitch and you do the pitch and they say, no.
00:09:53
Speaker
or the decision maker says, no, and you don't have anything else. I had two other things that I was going to offer my services for. Now, you know, the MC thing came up, but that's a lesson I share with a lot of people. The three asks, always have three. You never want to leave a pitch with nothing. Even if you're getting the contact name of the personal organization,
00:10:16
Speaker
and email address and phone number. And at least if you get that opportunity to follow up with them in a few months, you left with something. You didn't leave with nothing. I like it, man. I do. I really, really, really like it. So what are some three asks that
00:10:39
Speaker
you think have made a big difference in your life in terms of helping position you as this man who is a beacon for fathers and families in Canada. Because that's, to me, that's your area of thought leadership. You help fathers be the best version of themselves as fathers. Yeah, I would say fathers slash men. My three areas is that I had mentioned for listening.
00:11:06
Speaker
I think that's a core and listening with your head and your heart because at our center, we haven't, Nikki, you've been there. We have an area at the front where it's a boardroom and there's a huge table. And there are times we just get fathers who just walk in off the street and I say, okay, let's sit down, tell me your story. So I want people to listen. Second of all, you want to be able to frame back to them or understand what they're saying.
00:11:35
Speaker
Because if you have an understanding, then you can move to the next step. And one of the key phrases I use is, is that fair? Because if someone is treated fairly, you can move on to the next step with them. If they're not being treated fairly, you can't move on together. Another aspect is fairness and respect. I believe that most fathers, I think most people want to be treated with fairness and respect.
00:12:00
Speaker
Would you agree, Nicky? Sure, 100%. But you know, I also think, what did John F. Kennedy say? He said, life isn't fair, it never has been and never will be, right? Yes, but the thing is, when you get that fairness and respect, don't you feel, does that person feel like a million bucks? A million bucks. That's what I'm saying. And especially in the world we live in today, a lot of people don't feel like they're being respected or treated fairly. So if you can, as I say, find the need and fill it, don't find the need and kill it,
00:12:31
Speaker
You're on your way. And also people need to know also failure is not a person. Failure is a moment. Brilliant. I like that. I'm going to steal that with pride. Okay. No problem. You know, and something add on to it. We never have bad days. We have bad moments. I like that too. So Dr. Vibe, you,
00:12:57
Speaker
Like we talked about offline, I think you got to start putting all this in the form of some workshops on weekends. I think you should do some one-on-one coaching, some group programs for people. There's lots of people out there that could use this. I know you do this from your heart and the philanthropic level, and that's incredible, but I believe there's a business here as well. Just to interrupt, I do do coaching outside of
00:13:25
Speaker
the outside of the works I do for this organization, I do that and do that also. I'm being transparent, I do need to load up more and this year has been a great opportunity for me because I've had a number of opportunities again to share my message and be on stages. Another thing I would share for your audience is credibility

Building Credibility Through Stories

00:13:46
Speaker
leads to profitability.
00:13:48
Speaker
Credibility leads to profitability. It's funny that you should say that. Dr. Ivan Meisner, the founder of BNI, talks about that visibility, credibility, profitability. Absolutely. Those are that VCP. And I think that's 100% true. But listen, you know, our mutual friend Steve Richmond, who I actually had a conversation with on my way to come in and have this interview with you.
00:14:12
Speaker
He is someone who's been working with men. I started working with Steve back in 2016. Steve was doing some coaching for men, but not a ton at the time. And he came, he joined our community, he joined our program, and we really helped Steve take it to the next level, right? Steve went from just kind of dabbling in this to getting to the point where he was doing regularly 8K, 10K, 20K worth of business, and he was helping a whole lot more men. His credibility went up, his visibility went up.
00:14:42
Speaker
And if anything, in my opinion, you've got similar credentials and experience to Steve. And again, it's a good offline conversation for us to continue. But boy, I think the world needs you. It needs the message you have. And I think you ought to get handsomely paid for it. That's my opinion. Well, I received that. I don't want to share another thing with your audience that I am based as Nikki is in Toronto, Greater Toronto area.
00:15:08
Speaker
My online audience, 70% of it is outside of Canada. Wow. Now people will say, how does that happen? Well, when I started this journey, and it's a little bit challenging to get people on my platform from Toronto slash Canada. So I had a decision to make. I said, I could go in the corner, cry and pee on myself, or I'm going to find out where I get love and drill down.
00:15:35
Speaker
And I've been able to find a marketplace in the United States. And remember, most of these people that I have on my platform, I know that will never meet physically. Yeah, you will. Again, developing the relationships. And I really want, if there's anything I want people to leave with today, is the relationships. Don't connect with people, relate with people.
00:15:57
Speaker
People are looking for that relatability place and also find the need and fill it. Don't find the need and kill it. Listen to what people want. And if you're the person who can deliver to them, you do it, but make sure you can do it. If you can't at least refer them to someone in your community, not network, because most people's net ain't working, your community who can serve and fill the need that they're looking to have filled.
00:16:30
Speaker
100%, man, 100%. I love how you speak because there's a musical quality to it, right? It's almost like a poetry, a rap with rhyme in it. And why I like that is because the brain latches on to music. The brain latches on to rhythm. The brain latches on to poetry and rap. It likes it. And the soul,
00:16:56
Speaker
gets attracted to that way of speaking as well. And it connects with the message. So I just wanted to give you that feedback. It's phenomenal. Thank you. Thank you. Another thing I will share is try to make people bigger than you. And people say, what do you mean by that? Well, you know what? The biggest leaders are the biggest servers. Wow. Right? So I've been very blessed at a number of people who have come on my platform. I've started their own online conversations.
00:17:26
Speaker
And I love that. I love that. You love to have that, see that someone become a zero to a hero. And that is wonderful. And again, when someone has a positive experience with you, either a service or a product that you offer, what are they going to do? They're probably going to tell other people about you. And that's what you want. You want to create a group of brand ambassadors, as I call them.

Audience Relatability vs. Size

00:17:51
Speaker
Incredible. Absolutely love it.
00:17:53
Speaker
absolutely love it. I think it's super, super important to be able to find people that resonate with your message, that fall in love with it. You know, there's a man named Kevin Kelly. He wrote an article, a very famous article called A Thousand True Fans. And this article basically is one that every thought leader should read because
00:18:18
Speaker
Well, even though the subject of the article is rock bands and his thesis was that if as a rock band you have a thousand true fans who will buy anything and everything you put out, who will, you know, go to your concerts, who will buy your CDs, download your stuff from iTunes, you can make a hundred grand a year.
00:18:41
Speaker
Now, as a thought leader, if you can have a thousand true fans who'll buy everything you put out, who'll be into everything that you do, you can make millions, you know? And those are the brand ambassadors, right? The thousand true fans. Absolutely. I believe in this, that you don't want everybody, you want the right people.
00:19:05
Speaker
Yeah, you don't want everybody, you want the right people. You want the right people. And, you know, and one of the people who have mentored me in my time as a lady named Lisa Hickey, she is the CEO of the Goodman Project. And she said she's done some great classes online with some of us. And she said, you hit a magic number when you have 10,000 online followers. And she has a 25 year background in advertising. So that's another thing I would share with your audience that
00:19:35
Speaker
Once you get 10,000 online followers, and that's on all your various platforms from YouTube, Twitter, et cetera, that's what you should be aiming for. And the thing is, even if you had 2% of those 10,000 that purchased your products or services on a regular basis, you're not doing too bad.
00:19:57
Speaker
No, you're not doing too bad at all. You're not doing too bad at all. So you know what? I'd love to connect with this individual and have him come on my show. I think this is some powerful thought leadership that they put together and important stuff as well.
00:20:13
Speaker
So, Dr. Vai, tell the audience how the Epic Conversations show has made such a difference for you inside your career and inside you getting your message out, and what kind of people listen to the show and what kind of people come on the show? Well, that's a very loaded question, so I'm going to see if I can break it down as good as I possibly can. First of all, what I've got out of it is that, first of all, I've been able to enhance my own thought leadership skills
00:20:42
Speaker
in various ways, that is reaching out to people I don't know, also getting them on a platform that they may not have known of, also for them to be able to talk about what they want to talk about in a comfortable setting. It's also made me a very good listener. Nikki's been on my platform and Nikki can attest that when I'm hosting these conversations, I don't do that much talking. It's all about
00:21:10
Speaker
the person or persons who are on and also the audience. So I put the focus on not on me. It's not about me. It's about them. Another great thing is I've had a wide variance of individuals from various backgrounds on my platform. It enhances my learning skills, but more importantly, I'm providing this information for the audience. I'm being able to
00:21:36
Speaker
Even up to recently, we had conversations with three women about domestic violence and human trafficking. Next, in a few weeks, I have someone coming on talk who's a member of the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce. I would just reach out to people and I make it simple. I say, hey, really enjoy what you do if it's an article. And hey, my name is Dr. Vibe. I host this program. If you're interested and available, would love you to come on. Simple, short, sweet. And another thing was, and I'm glad you're asking me this,
00:22:06
Speaker
I don't try to convince people to come on. We, a lot of times we spend so much time trying to convince people to do things. Don't spend that time of energy. If they want to do it, they'll do it. If not, no problem. 100%. When people, you know, Hey, last I checked, there's over 6 billion people in the world. So if someone says no, no problem. A lot of times when they're saying no, it's no just at that time. Yes. And we don't have, we shouldn't take it personally.
00:22:36
Speaker
No, never. Right. So that's the way we look at it. And also too, you got to do the work. Really. Let, let's simply get down to folks. I'm not flossing anything here. I do everything when it comes to the Dr. Vibe show. I do the research and that's another key thing. Research is so important. That's right. A lot of people don't like doing research, but if I've noticed through people that I respect, three things that make them stand out.
00:23:04
Speaker
One, they do the research. Two, they do the work. And three, they enjoy what they do. And I'll give you a perfect example. About a year and a half ago, I was at a conference being held downtown Toronto. And I had a, there was a booth, we had a booth there at Togmo Fatherhood. And it was a gentleman who came up around 11 o'clock in the morning, hey, how you doing, et cetera, all that. And he asked me about, you know, I want to start this fatherhood group down in Windsor. What do I need to do? I said, you know, this, this, and this.
00:23:33
Speaker
And he said, okay, I'll come back and see you later. So at the end of the day, he came back and I asked him, so how was your day? He said, it was great. I said, did you get to all the booths? He said, yeah. And I said, did you have one you really enjoyed? He says, I liked you. And I say, why? Cause you were passionate. Very important. You want to be passionate about what you do because people are going to like you before they like the product or service you're offering, especially if you're an entrepreneur.

Personal Connection in Entrepreneurship

00:24:01
Speaker
It's different if you want to go buy things at a Walmart. You don't really got to deal with anybody. But if you're an entrepreneur and you're providing a service or a product, they are going to like you before they want to know what you're offering or what product that you're trying to sell to them.
00:24:17
Speaker
That's very true. You know, I want to unpack some of what you said, okay? So, convincing doesn't work. One of my mentors, Mr. Al Asensio, who is a regional vice president with a network marketing company called ACN, he said to me, a man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still. So basically, convincing doesn't work.
00:24:39
Speaker
People need to want to be associated with your message, associated with your brand, right? You want, as George W. Bush said back during the original Herak war in the early 2000s, you want a coalition of the willing, right? You don't want to be dragging people with you. I'd rather run with three than drag a thousand, you know? And that's very, very true. So I think that's very powerful what you just shared around that.
00:25:09
Speaker
And I think what you said about entrepreneurship and the people by who you are first, they vote yes or no to your energy, to your love and caring. My mentor, Mark Von Muser, was at our last event in April. And here's what he had to say, Dr. Vibe. He said that if someone is basically not wanting to be there, if you gotta drag them, if they're not ready to do the work, it's not gonna work anyways.
00:25:38
Speaker
It's way better for you to find just one or two or three people who are hungry for your message than try to have a thousand people in a room, none of whom really give a damn. There are these people who have tens of thousands of followers on social media, but there's no engagement. And then there's people who have 200 followers on social media and there's tons of engagement. It's so true. Like I want quality over quantity.
00:26:06
Speaker
And it's interesting. One of my main mentors said something the other day that really hit me. And he said, freedom comes from leveraging the talents of others. It's very true. Huge. I just went, wow. I love that. I've put that up on my wall because you can't do it alone. And if you are, you're missing out.
00:26:31
Speaker
Dr. Vibe, you and I, we think alike. One of my mottos inside my community is hashtag don't do it alone. Because if you do it alone, you're losing. I called a member of our E-Circle Academy mastermind program. And she's fantastic, right? She just had someone very close to her pass away. So she's been grieving. And she just pulled away. And I didn't know what was going on. But she shared that with me today. And I felt horrible for her. She's been devastated.
00:27:00
Speaker
And this is a lady who, when she had been in the community fully engaged, managed to do $40,000 a month. Months, right? And now she's barely doing 8 or 10K, right? So I just sat there and I listened to her and I just reminded her that I love her.
00:27:18
Speaker
My lady Teresa loves her. My lady works with me. The whole community loves her. We're here to serve her. We're sorry she's going through this pain. And don't do it alone. We'll help you get through this. And her whole energy change, her whole vitality change. And I said, look, you deserve to make a half a million a million a year. Let's do this for you.
00:27:39
Speaker
And now she says, okay, she's recommitted, she's reengaged, she wants to get back into the swing of things, and I want this to be possible for her because she deserves it. She's a single mom who goes out there and serves entrepreneurs and helps them scale. She's really, really good at that. And I want to make this a real possibility for her. And doing it alone wasn't gonna make it happen. Never do anything alone. Always do it with a team.
00:28:04
Speaker
Well, this is what I tell people. Last I checked, unless you came by a stork, it took two people for you to get in this world. Right? So I look at it that way big time. So Dr. Vibe, we like to end off each one of these episodes by asking you, our expert guests, to share with the audience what are your top three expert action steps that you recommend they take on to take their life and their business to the next level?

Mentor's 10 Rules for Achieving Goals

00:28:31
Speaker
What are yours? Well, I'm going to borrow from one of my major mentors, Mario Armstrong, and he shared recently something called the 10 rules to help you get your thing achieved. So I know you asked for three, but these are short, short 10. Is that fair? A hundred percent, man. Rock and roll. You're Dr. Vibe. You can break the rules. I'm a rule breaker myself, my man. Yeah. And that's another thing too.
00:28:57
Speaker
I'll save that for the end. I will say I was somehow parking lot that for the end. So number one, believe in your vision. Number two, create proof of it. Number three, crave impact for others. Number four, share your why. Number five, ask for advice. Number six, build resilience.

Number seven, be a good human. Number eight, get an accountability partner. Number nine, educate yourself obsessively in your field. And number 10, know your distinct uniqueness. So it's more than three, but those 10, I feel, well, I know someone out there that's listening to that.

will help them move even if it's a centimeter or an inch, depending what country you're in, forward.

I love it. Those are fantastic expert action steps, my man. So, listener, you got to check out Dr. Vibe's show. As you said, I've been a guest on a show and he's been gracious enough to invite me to come back. And the Epic Conversations show, the Dr. Vibe show. The Dr. Vibe show. The Dr. Vibe show is the name, but I like the Epic Conversations tagline that you have.
00:30:25
Speaker
So I'm going to break the rules and call it both the Epic Conversation Show and the Dr. Vibe Show. You have Epic Conversations in the show. Thank you. It's fantastic. Make sure that you tune in and you listen. So Dr. Vibe, we're going to make sure we put that in the show notes so that people can find you. Nicky, can I just, I just want to leave with two things for your audience. Sure. First of all, your gift will take you where your character will fail you.
00:30:56
Speaker
And then here's my question to everybody out there, and I always ask this every day to myself, and many times when I share with people, whether it's virtually or face-to-face, I leave with this question. And even the other day, I had a chance to speak with Diane Clemens, who some people wouldn't know the name Mike Pinball Clemens. You know pinball?
00:31:19
Speaker
Yeah, well, I know him a little bit and we were both at an event together. Mike was speaking and his wife was there and then I had a chance to speak with his wife. And if you get a chance, anyone either see him online or even better face-to-face, you have to hear Mike pinball Clemens. Not here, visualize him speaking. Huge, huge. Actually, I got two more quick stories, but he was huge. So I said this to Diane Clemens and I say to everyone and I say to myself every day,
00:31:49
Speaker
What would you do if you couldn't fail? And I'll let that resonate on that. I know Nikki highlighted a lot of the work of fathers, and I have a quick father story for you, if you don't mind. Go for it, man. Because I don't like the word busy, I like the word positive, productive, I don't get a chance to watch a lot of TV. But about two weeks ago, I just was flipping on channels and I saw
00:32:17
Speaker
I was on the Oprah network and I saw The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, and they did an Oprah's masterclass with him and it was riveting, absolutely riveting. And near the end, it just went to a whole other level. He's been married now for eight years to a lady, but I believe he has a daughter from a previous relationship and they've been getting on well.
00:32:43
Speaker
LaRock has said, he said that, you know, my greatest job in life is being a father. And one day he asked his daughter, what's the greatest thing that you like about your dad? And he's going, oh, dad, you're bugging me, you know, whatever. And he said, no, I really want to hear. And he began to choke up and his daughter said, I trust you. And that just, and he just started to break out and cry. And I even get emotional with that. I think for fathers out there,
00:33:14
Speaker
If you can get, if your kids and if you have a partner or have a wife or someone, if they can say that they trust you, that is a powerful, powerful, resonating legacy statement. And I'm gonna leave on that.
00:33:37
Speaker
Fantastic, I love that. So listener, make sure that you go listen to the show. Details are gonna be in the show notes.
00:33:46
Speaker

And we didn't even have a chance to talk about assumptions with people. Take the word assumptions out of your vocabulary. And then a pleasure to you, your E-Circle family.
