Introduction to 'What's My Age Again' Podcast

00:00:00
Speaker
Welcome to What's My Age Again, the realest podcast for women who are done chasing trends and ready to feel empowered. Hi, I'm Kim. And I'm Tanya, holistic nutritionists and childhood best friends who've been there, done that, and bought the collagen.
00:00:16
Speaker

Mission of Aging Gracefully

00:00:33
Speaker
You see, we're also on a mission to age gracefully one WTF moment at a time. Backed by research and real life, we're here to share what actually works, what's a waste of time, and how to truly thrive through the messy, magical midlife transition.

Discussing Sugar, Stress, and Immune System

00:00:49
Speaker
We're so happy you're here. Let's dive in. Hello, everybody. Welcome back to the podcast. I hope everybody is doing well. Kim, how are you? I'm good, Tanya. I'm excited for the conversation today. It feels like a part two.
00:01:06
Speaker
It definitely feels like a part two because we are in the thick of sugar and stress season, aka cold and flu, And um a couple weeks ago, we had a really I loved that episode, FYI. I think we can say that.
00:01:22
Speaker
We had a really good conversation about sugar and stress season and like the real reason why we're all sick right now. Well, not all of us. It's true. i got i Actually, it was probably the body image one was up there too. But this one was like one of the biggest I got a lot of feedback from a lot of people about that episode. So I think it was a good one and may have

Natural Immunity Boosters

00:01:44
Speaker
resonated with some of you. So that's That's what we're here for. It was great.
00:01:47
Speaker
That is what we're here for. And as we promised you, um we wanted to do like a follow-up in terms of really opening our natural medicine cabinets and pantries to y'all.
00:02:01
Speaker
to tell you the actual products and foods that we use to not only boost our immune systems during this time, but the things that we turn to when virus strikes, because it's going to happen no matter, no matter what, no matter who you are, it's going to happen. And when it does, um it can go one of both ways. It can be long and drawn out and not fun, or it can be Shorter and not fun, depending on, you know, the things that we do to help ourselves. So we're going to share a lot of the things that we personally have in our homes in front of us right now with you guys.
00:02:40
Speaker
Love it. And if you haven't listened to that previous episode that we're talking about, go back two episodes because we're talking, like Tanya said, about boosting our immune system.

Daily Prevention Strategies

00:02:50
Speaker
But what we talk about and dig into in that one is what we're doing to actually suppress our immune system on a day-to-day basis, which is foundational. Because you could be doing all the things we talked to today, but if you're suppressing that immune system, it's not it's it's <unk> not going to help.
00:03:06
Speaker
So go back, listen to that one, and then jump back with us over here. Good point. excited about today. Good, good point. So let's talk about daily prevention.
00:03:17
Speaker
I think that it's safe to say that, um Kim, you do the same as me. We take certain nutraceuticals and we do certain things in our lives, and that changes with the season. It changes maybe with what we're going through, if we we're stressed, more stressed, it changes with our age during perimenopause, these little tweaks.
00:03:37
Speaker
So these seasonal tweaks right now are things that I'm personally adding to my repertoire to support me during this season.
00:03:48
Speaker
um So as daily prevention, I think one of my favorite things is um mushrooms, which we did speak about, but a mushroom powder acting as a immune modulator. So again, dialing that up or down as needed.
00:04:02
Speaker
And my favorite one right now is actually the Myco10 by CanPref. Love it. have that one too, Tanya. Yes. Actually, I think it was you who originally recommended it to me. So I've been taking it for a while.
00:04:16
Speaker
Probably was because it's easy, right, Kim? And it's reputable. It's organic. And they are extracted in a way where they keep all of their medicinal properties. And the one thing I love, guys, is it's heat stable.
00:04:27
Speaker
So you can toss that in anywhere. Toss it in your matcha. Toss it in your baking, in your soups.

Mushrooms and Vitamin D Benefits

00:04:33
Speaker
Just getting that scoop a day, sometimes two scoops for me, um is something I really use as a daily prevention during this time.
00:04:41
Speaker
So true. Mushrooms are such a medicinal food and getting it as a powder makes it super easy. The other, you know, also adding mushrooms to your diet right now can be so fantastic as well.
00:04:55
Speaker
It's soup season. Let's make a beautiful mushroom soup. And as Tanya and I always say, variety is key. So go into that grocery store and check out some different mushrooms that you haven't tried before.
00:05:07
Speaker
And you know what I love? I saw it on your Instagram maybe a couple days ago. Actually, it was when the Jays made it to the World Series. And by the time by the time this airs, we're not sure what's going to happen. We hope for the best.
00:05:18
Speaker
all going to be excited. Yes, you were making... um tacos It was a taco Tuesday. And it was great. You're like, when one of your kids loves mushrooms and the other doesn't, you weren't like, leave them out. You're like, dice them thin, hide them in. And they never know they never knew. yeah I do that with tacos. I do that like actually last night. I did it again with our spaghetti sauce.
00:05:42
Speaker
And actually, if you you know saute it up with your onions and garlic, they get nice and sort of browned the way ground beef looks. Throw in the ground beef and they'll never know.
00:05:52
Speaker
Actually, and also sometimes we don't do it with beef. Sometimes we do it with lentils and mushrooms. So that's my jam. You're speaking my language right there, our tempeh and mushrooms. So yeah, number one, mushrooms are great. And the easiest form that you can do now in both of our cupboards, now that you know, is that Myco 10 blend of by Canprev.
00:06:12
Speaker
That's good one. another one that I amp up, and I'm sure you're the same, Kim, but this is important, guys. um Working with your medical practitioner and making sure your blood work is always up to date is that vitamin D. It is absolutely crucial for supporting our immune system. most of us Most of us in North America don't have near enough, but you don't F around with this either.
00:06:37
Speaker
because it is fat soluble. It is also a hormone. So we want to get you in that sweet spot. And I'm going to say it because I'm very candid. Spoiler alert. I don't really believe that the sweet spot is necessarily what Health Canada or your doctor might say it is. So if you work with a natural healthcare practitioner that you trust, they'll get you in that sweet spot. So that is such an important supplement that I make sure I am on for prevention now and year round fluctuating with my levels.
00:07:06
Speaker
Absolutely. And guys, next time you're you're getting your blood tested, um ask for that test on your blood work because you can start by taking a small daily dose you know that's appropriate, but you might need to amp it up and as Tanya said, be dosed appropriately. but But also as Tanya said, it's funny, Tanya, I had a client that did have high vitamin D. That was when she first came to me, I guess a previous practitioner had told her that likely she was so they dosed her inappropriately. And it isn't good. So you're right, Tanya. Like, you know, take that take that daily dose, but make sure that you are getting your vitamin D levels checked and then dose yourself appropriately.
00:07:51
Speaker
Or have your practitioner dose you appropriately. Yeah. And since we're opening up our medicine cabinets,

Role of Vitamins C and Zinc

00:07:57
Speaker
um my favorite brand for myself is the Demulsion by Genestra.
00:08:04
Speaker
um I like a drop. I think it's easier to take. I think it's really readily absorbable, especially when it's packed with some fat, some natural oils in there to help the body absorb because it is fat soluble.
00:08:16
Speaker
um That being said, you have a Drops are essential. Yeah. As opposed to taking it as a pill, yeah the drops with that oil, as Tania said, is better, as your body will easily absorb it because, again, fat soluble.
00:08:29
Speaker
Fat soluble, for sure. Yeah. yeah So that's that's my brand that I'm loving right now. And another Canprev that I'm loving right now um is the haven't they have an elderberry plus sea liquid.
00:08:43
Speaker
And honestly, it tastes delicious. There is some natural blueberry flavors in there. Usually I don't flock to natural flavors, but I do, for the most part, trust Canprev and what they have in there. So that's for me too, is a little shot in the morning of elderberry to really help again.
00:09:02
Speaker
support and boost that immune system and some vitamin C. Vitamin C isn't necessarily proven to help boost the immune system per se, but it is very involved in the manufacture of cells of the immune system. And also it is proven to help shorten the duration of cold and flu. So even though I use this preventatively, you better believe when I get sick, I raise the amount that I'm taking the dosage.
00:09:28
Speaker
Well, and Tanya, you also mentioned at the beginning stress and stress actually ah makes our body go through that vitamin C quicker. So in those times of stress, it is helpful to add vitamin C or up your dose if you're already taking it.
00:09:45
Speaker
And different than vitamin D, vitamin C is actually water-soluble. So your body will get rid of the vitamin C that it doesn't need. um But speak to your practitioner about whether or not this time you could increase that vitamin C because it is, you know, an antioxidant in there as well. It helps your body fight off invaders.
00:10:06
Speaker
For sure. That's such a good point. And another thing that I love to do daily um as prevention, collodial silver, and i i just think it's so neat.
00:10:17
Speaker
I love it so much. It has so many magical properties. And um the Sovereign Silver brand has an actual brand that's already formulated like in a nasal spray.
00:10:29
Speaker
So for me, this is pure prevention. It's never helped me. Like I don't use it for congestion or when I get sick, but because it has such a beautiful ability to kill bacteria, to kill microbes, to kill virus.
00:10:44
Speaker
When I come home from somewhere crowded, or I've been at a party with a lot of people, or, you know, maybe you have been exposed to somebody who hasn't been under the weather couple shots of that in each nostril, that helps to kill anything that might be struggling in my nose hairs to get into my passages and make me

Nasal Sprays and Colloidal Silver

00:11:02
Speaker
sick.
00:11:02
Speaker
And I honestly leave one by the door. So when I come in, i can do a couple little squirts. And that's a travel buddy for me, especially during cold and flu season, getting off the plane and all of that. that's I feel like that's been instrumental in prevention for me.
00:11:16
Speaker
totally I remember you doing that when you came to visit me. Absolutely. Plain pal, sovereign silver. Yeah, colloidal silver is so great for so many things. And can we talk about nasal spray for a second here? Because I, you know, I guess I use it for prevention, but definitely during a cold and flu, I use nasal spray just to help keep things moving. So, you know, when things are stagnant, that's where we can get infection.
00:11:45
Speaker
So if you feel a cold coming on, um using nasal spray can really help. And the one that I use is called X-Lir, which is, you know, the the main ingredient there is xylitol.
00:11:58
Speaker
There's no sort of, what am I trying to say, steroid in it. And it just helps keep things clear. And there's also a kid's X layer, which is, it's got this cute little elephant on the front.
00:12:09
Speaker
It's a little bit of a softer spray for kids who don't want like, who don't like that feeling of a nasal spray. My kids now use the the regular X layer, but it's a good one that I always keep in my medicine cabinet as well. And you can use it prevention, but you can also use it during any sort of cold.
00:12:27
Speaker
That's such a good point. So exactly. The point of the that nasal spray is to keep things moving, is to keep that drainage going, that lubrication, as opposed to the nose sprays of my past.
00:12:40
Speaker
I didn't know you'd say that. It's wild. I have a serious memory. Can I say the brand? Yes. Otravin? Yes.
00:12:52
Speaker
Literally the saga. like This is wild, guys. like This is why these nose sprays here, and again, all of we'll put a lot of these in the show notes for you. um These are very different and not to be feared because let me tell you, I had nose spray PSD.
00:13:07
Speaker
So to PTSD, sorry. To make a long story short, I literally was addicted to Otravin. Like it is funny, not funny. Like literally. It's not funny, but yes, I remember it. Like Kim, addicted to Otravin where you didn't, I didn't realize back then that you could become addicted to this. And now when we were just chatting about things before and I was looking up things, ah you know, before we started to record this, I took little peek at Ochervin because I thought nose sprays might come up as we talk about our current medicine cabinet.
00:13:42
Speaker
Listen to this. Listen to Ochervin here. So I'm reading this here. So using Ochervin for too long can lead to rebound congestion, a condition also known as rhinitis metakamatosa, where your nasal congestion gets worse when you stop using the spray.
00:14:00
Speaker
This happens because the nasal passages become dependent on the medication for blood vessels to function properly and continued overuse can lead to long-term swelling, irritation, and dependence.
00:14:14
Speaker
And this is what happened to me. So these nose sprays that we're using, they're not affecting our actual capillaries and the blood vessels. They're keeping things moving. They're killing viruses.
00:14:25
Speaker
This nose spray here, Ochervin, the ingredients have a much different effect. Anyways, I was literally, my nose was swollen shut if I didn't use Ochervin. And I would do like a spray of Ochervin. Kim, I remember being at high school and going into the bathroom.

Natural Remedies vs. Medications

00:14:42
Speaker
And this is where, you know, like it comes down to root cause, like the allergies that you experienced. This was just exacerbating it. Right? and Absolutely right. I would go into the bathroom at Mount Carmel and like be like, little spray in the nose, like literally, and like walk out to class and it would keep me good for an hour and then less and less.
00:15:02
Speaker
Anyways, the long story of this is that I actually had to get my nasal passages cauterized, the skin to like literally give me new skin that was less reactive and addictive.
00:15:15
Speaker
And I had um a Double deviated septum surgery. Don't recommend. Probably wouldn't have done that now. But anyways, just because the swelling over so much time had caused both of my septums to like be so swollen, i had no air going through.
00:15:34
Speaker
Oh my gosh, Tanya. So this is why we changed our medicine cabinets, guys. This is why we really want to share that there are natural ways that do not have counter bad side effects to prevent and also give you relief when you are sick.
00:15:50
Speaker
Oh my gosh, Tanya. Is Ocherun even out there? Ocherun's still real, right? i but I assume so, but I don't know for sure. Well, guys, i know you obviously, yeah, like it's it's very real what you experienced. Oh my God.
00:16:06
Speaker
So treatment looks different for us now, for you as well, Kim, than me. You know, there's no Otervins and there's no all, you know, all of these things that I can't even think of medicine names anymore. Things that we would go to like DayQuil, NightQuil. I can't even think of what I need to take.
00:16:23
Speaker
I think the point here too is with any of the medicines, they're short they should be short term. If you feel like you need to take something medicinal, like like ah a NyQuil, like a Tylenol, like a you know something for allergies, like a reactant or something like that, always in order to suppress your symptoms, well, we need to get to the bottom of why you're experiencing those symptoms in the first place. Because like we always say, medication is a band-aid.
00:16:49
Speaker
It's to help you get through what you know those symptoms are, but it's not to be used... forever as the answer, right? It's alongside digging deep to figure out why you're experiencing those symptoms in the first place. But that is another podcast.
00:17:06
Speaker
We could go off on a tangent here, Tanya. A thousand percent too. And with that being said, let's get into our medicine cabinets today when we are sick, because I do agree with you ah thousand percent.
00:17:17
Speaker
Medications for the short term are a bandaid, but we know things like cold and flu are short term, but still some of those medications are the side effects and what they're doing to your body in the short short term aren't great. So today we're hoping to maybe open your eyes or to if you're dabbling already in natural remedies, to maybe add some things to your toolkits that maybe you won't feel the need to take harsher medications because even if they're short term, we have some beautiful medications that work just as well that are natural and have less harsh side effects on your body while you're taking them.
00:17:56
Speaker
And also just thinking here too a minute, because just because we say natural remedy doesn't mean they should also be taken every day or it doesn't mean they should just be taken in whatever dose you see fit. Working with a practitioner here is so important because perhaps even, and I haven't looked into this, and again, I'm not a doctor, but somebody using Xlear every single day all the time too,
00:18:21
Speaker
I love it. you know every that that You know, that's also so just because it's natural doesn't mean that you shouldn't be looking too, again, for that root cause so that you don't have to be using it all the time.
00:18:33
Speaker
I love it. Yep. ah for Absolutely. It does. Natural remedies, natural medicine is still medicine. And it's something that I talk about all the time with my clients and friends and family. And it has the ability to heal. And it also has the ability to hinder if it's not taken properly, or if it doesn't work for your

Echinacea and Elderberry Uses

00:18:50
Speaker
body.
00:18:50
Speaker
So these are short term remedies that we're talking about. We're literally just talking about opening our medicine cabinets today for cold and flu. So like you said, Kim, These should be taken in the short term. And you need to check with a healthcare practitioner prior because a lot of these can be herbal. And for example, I can't take echinacea because I do have a ragweed allergy and that doesn't work for me. They're in the same family. So yes, treat these as medicines, but here are some of, you know, we want to open our cabinet and say, when we get sick, this is what happens.
00:19:23
Speaker
Let's get back into our original convo because we went on 19 tangents because that's what we do and it's fun. So, okay. let So we were talking supplements. And one supplement that I add during sugar and stress season is zinc.
00:19:39
Speaker
And zinc, I mean, you also want to be careful with zinc because it has to be balanced with your copper. But ah um zinc basically helps with the function of T and B cells, which are part of the immune system and the natural killer cells that kill off those viruses and bacteria that enter our body.
00:19:57
Speaker
It also supports cellular immunity. You know, that's that's really how viruses begin by entering our cells, right? So zinc is another one that I usually add during this this season or take once sick.
00:20:11
Speaker
Yeah, that's a good point too. Me too. When I get sick, um I will high dose myself again, appropriately for me, I am a practitioner, um high dose myself with zinc.
00:20:23
Speaker
um And I also turn to zinc lozenges. um There's a lot on the market right now, but I really enjoy the TheraZinc lozenges, that line, because they have a good amount in each lozenge.
00:20:35
Speaker
And I kind of take them in intervals throughout the day to do exactly that. So I love that. The prevention can also turn into the treatment with a tweak of dosage. Perfect. And you mentioned, so you did mention echinacea.
00:20:49
Speaker
One of the sort of preventative things that I do with my kids, and I, like you, don't take echinacea on the regular, well, you don't take it at all because of the history. have an autoimmune disease, so I am quite careful with immune boosting herbs and remedies as well.
00:21:08
Speaker
And although there are studies out there that say echinacea doesn't affect echinacea, autoimmune, it isn't, the science isn't 100%. So I am quite careful with taking echinacea.
00:21:21
Speaker
um I do take it when I'm sick, but I don't take it preventatively right now. But I do give it to my kids. And there's a great brand called Avogel. And I purchased the um hot drink.
00:21:33
Speaker
um And so I just, we call it berry tea. I make my kids a berry tea. Or preventatively, I just put a little bit in their water bottles. Um, and the dosages are right there that um, for adults and children.
00:21:48
Speaker
Um, and I up the dose when, like when kids, the kids are actually sick is when we have our, we all have our berry tea, even me. I love that.
00:21:58
Speaker
And then speaking of echinacea, it is so powerful. So I love it. It's something I wish that I could use. There is um a brand of ah natural factors and there is a brand of these little bites and they are called like quick blasts.
00:22:14
Speaker
anti-cold and it's an instant relief. And I buy them for my husband and he swears by them. So if he thinks he's feeling a little something, something, um it's eucalyptus, it's peppermint, it's lemon, and there's raw honey in there. So all very healing things. And then there is some echinacea in there.
00:22:31
Speaker
So he'll have one of those. And then when he's sick as well, he will also use that more medicinally and dose, you know, dosage more appropriately to actually support himself through a virus.
00:22:43
Speaker
Love that. And you also mentioned Elderberry. That's another one that's great for fighting colds, coughs, sore throats, viruses. um There's a great company called Ciro.
00:22:56
Speaker
They actually have a little kit where you can make gummies, like gummy bears, well so that it can be like a little elderberry gummy for

Oil of Oregano and Homemade Tonics

00:23:05
Speaker
the kids. And I have made them.
00:23:06
Speaker
Kids don't love them. My kids don't love them. shouldn't say that. Brenny did. Owen did not. But um you can also take it as a syrup, like as if you would be taking a cough syrup. But that's another one. Elderberry also is great for fighting viruses and supporting the immune system.
00:23:25
Speaker
For sure. I love that. um And then speaking, it' still more of like these tinctures, these liquids. Another big one for me is oil of oregano.
00:23:35
Speaker
That is always in my cabinet. And I mean, I don't necessarily have a number one brand, but obviously dark, cold, cold, dark glass bottle. We've talked about oils in the past podcast to protect it.
00:23:50
Speaker
um Organic and or Oregano is one of the most powerful you know herbs out there that fights viruses, that fights bacteria.
00:24:01
Speaker
So I will take oil of oregano appropriately for myself, which literally is about five to 10 intervals a day when I am sick.
00:24:12
Speaker
So I insert that into my repertoire as well. I just put it straight under my tongue, shoot it back with water, and it definitely has that power to fight Those viruses. Absolutely. Antimicrobial, antiviral, all the things.
00:24:25
Speaker
um We use St. Francis Herb Farm and I just use the tincture. We put it in a little bit of water and like you said, shoot it back. Shooters are different in our house these days, right? Shooters are different in our lives that the meaning has completely changed. Speaking of shooters, I do also do a Somewhat preventatively, definitely during cold and flu, um i do a little tonic where I put things like a full lemon, organic with the peel, cloves of garlic, two or three, a chunk of ginger,
00:25:05
Speaker
a piece of raw, a chunk of turmeric, um tablespoon of raw honey or monoka honey, some warm water, blend it in the Vitamix.
00:25:16
Speaker
And it is like a little tonic that we can shoot and drink. And it's so supportive of the immune system, um has all those amazing anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral ingredients in there.
00:25:31
Speaker
And we store it in a mason jar in the fridge and we just take a little shot. And it's so much cheaper to make than to buy those little shooters. You might see them in the stores, um those little immune boosting shooters you might see in the grocery store.
00:25:44
Speaker
So much cheaper to just make it. It is for sure. But for those of us that sometimes week to week may not have the time um and are busy, one of my favorite ones is the greenhouse ginger shots that you can get at Costco.
00:25:59
Speaker
And there's actually a box. like i'm a box um Kim, the boxes are different in our house as well. So instead of boxed wine in your fridge that you can just go in and serve yourself with... They do actually make it in a box form where you can just press the button and it's a bag in there. And you can have it in shot.
00:26:15
Speaker
So I fully agree. It is still more economical to do it yourself and definitely fresher. But when you're in a pinch, guys, the greenhouse ginger shots, either in the box or in the bottle the bottles at Costco, I mean, you're still going to be able to get them in.
00:26:30
Speaker
So I'm going to try that. Good get it Yeah, for sure options. So also want to talk a little bit about to homeopathy, because I wouldn't be me if I

Homeopathy and NAC for Immunity

00:26:42
Speaker
didn't. um For those of you who don't know, it's a huge passion of mine. And I use a lot in my practice.
00:26:48
Speaker
And I am actually currently in school. at the Canadian College of Homeopathy to become a registered homeopath. So without getting into details, it's the most magical medicine in my opinion, but companies like, you know, Boron or Dr. Ruckawick, they make blends,
00:27:09
Speaker
that are targeted for common symptoms of cold, of flu. So one that I often, but that we always have on hand, um and you can get it anywhere. I've seen at like the superstore, even at shoppers, I think in Walmart, which I was like impressive, um is the, let me not butcher this, ocelococcinum, ocelococcinum, that's right.
00:27:31
Speaker
So those that's a beautiful remedy for all cold and flu flu. ah symptoms and the cortisonea works wonders for congestion. when you're at When you're at work or you're doing your thing and you just can't, you know, stop and you have that congestion, you can dose yourself throughout the day with these beautiful homeopathic remedies, which are safe and effective. And it really, really helps with not only the symptoms, but the deeper healing of the root of the virus.
00:28:05
Speaker
It supports your body's natural healing process. And you know what? Because of you, Tanya, our family is... ah Homeopathy is a part of our daily life, like not just for cold and flu season, but like when we go to the dentist, prevent how supporting our bones and teeth.
00:28:20
Speaker
you know If there has been you know a surgery like or a cavity filling or... You know, when, if somebody falls off their bike and scrapes their knees, like there's so many beautiful remedies that you can incorporate into your life. So yeah, find yourself a homeop, and who's someone who specializes in homeopathy or reach out to Tanya because having that um as part of your sort of pharmacy, as you will, um is so important and so beautiful to help your body, you know, with its own beautiful healing properties.
00:28:54
Speaker
It's so important. And yeah, like I said, those are, I'll put those ones, we'll put those ones in the notes, but I have, i have just tubs and tubs of remedies that really help with but viral, you know,
00:29:06
Speaker
ah inflammation. So there's three that I go to anytime I'm sick. And my clients are probably like, I know them, I have them. And it's not right for me to put them on here because everybody is different, but definitely homeopathy for the win for symptom, you know, symptoms of cold and virus big time.
00:29:24
Speaker
For sure. We've been bouncing around a lot here, but I think one other supplement that you can use preventatively and, you know, during um ah virus is N-acetylcysteine or NAC.
00:29:38
Speaker
Yes. That's another one. Yeah. that's hans Actually, I take it annually right now as part of my protocol.

Cough and Sinus Relief

00:29:45
Speaker
Yeah. And my, my kids certainly take it this time of year, dosed differently than me, of course.
00:29:50
Speaker
But N-acetylcysteine is, it does so many things in our body, supporting our liver, supporting our detox pathways, all the things, supports respiratory health, but essentially it's the precursor to our body's main, um, it's called glutathione. It's that major antioxidant In our body. So it is so key in supporting, you know, us in staying in, in fighting off illness.
00:30:19
Speaker
Yeah, that double that double thing for lungs, especially Kim, really short. Shout out to Keri if she ever comes across this podcast. She was my holistic nutritionist when I started this journey like 15 years ago. And one of the first supplements she put me on was NAC because I was a smoker and I was still smoking and my lungs were so bad.
00:30:41
Speaker
And now it's so funny, 15 years later, NAC is also a part of my repertoire every single day because of all of the you know beautiful things that you just talked about in terms of what it does for the body and systems of detoxification. So couldn't agree more.
00:30:57
Speaker
And then, yeah, we are jumping around, but we're sharing our medicine cabinet and I think it's working. We talked a lot about congestion and preventative. I also just wanted to um talk about two things for coughs because that's definitely part of when we get sick and viruses. So number one, love me um the cough medicines total.
00:31:17
Speaker
So again, that is readily available in so many different places. is it It is homeopathic by the company Boron. It basically covers dry coughs, wet coughs, children, um adults. So also a beautiful base of honey and a lot of active homeopathic in there to help support coughs, get a good night's sleep. For me, it's almost instantaneous for me and my husband. It's wild how much that works. I just couldn't say more good things about it.
00:31:47
Speaker
That's amazing. I have another one for coughs too. So this one I think was given to me originally by my naturopath as a remedy, but I do a little mixture of, well, so its the tincture, it's called echinacea. So it's echinacea.
00:32:04
Speaker
Myrrh and goldenseal, all by St. Francis. And there's a little ratio, tincture to add to a little bit of water, and then you gargle it and then swallow it.
00:32:14
Speaker
And that, um when we have coughs or sore throats, that's another good one. Again, something you want to talk to your practitioner about, about dose and about if it's appropriate for you, but essentially...
00:32:26
Speaker
all those things like myrrh and goldenseal, so antimicrobial and supportive of the immune system. So yeah, that's another one that we do for coughs. love that, Karen. Another thing for coughs that's super simple is, you know, or or a cold, when you want to move those sinuses, like what we were talking, you want to sort of moisturize and keep things moving is to do a steam.
00:32:51
Speaker
And you can use essential oils as well, but like heating up, heating up, um you know, boiling water, putting it in a um a bowl and having, you know, putting a towel over your head and just breathing in the the the steam or doing it in your shower, maybe adding a little bit of essential oils is so great to help with respiratory and keeping all those things moisturized and moving around.
00:33:16
Speaker
Absolutely. I love that. So definitely in my medicine cabinet is a good quality, um pure eucalyptus essential oil. And also sleep is very important and it can be very difficult when we're sick. So another thing I love for coughs,
00:33:31
Speaker
is a chest bomb, not VIX, no petroleum in my life, um but along the same lines, but it's ah one by Himalaya and it's just ah literally a Himalaya chest bomb, eucalyptus, which we'll also put in the show notes.
00:33:47
Speaker
And that's really helpful um to soak in there and to get into that lung space and to lull you you know off to sleep when you are fighting that virus. Totally. I use, we have a chest bomb too. I use on myself, my kids.
00:34:02
Speaker
It's by St. Francis Herb. I'm talking a lot about St. Francis Herb. They are a beautiful Canadian company. Guys, I welcome you to take a look at their website. They have amazing products, all organic, beautiful products.
00:34:14
Speaker
um And the, oh, the other thing that I forgot with coughs is St. Francis also has, it's called Stop It Cold. And it's just a throat spray that you that kind of coats the back of your throat and and supports.
00:34:30
Speaker
Yeah, throat sprays, absolutely love. I haven't used that one. I'll have to check it out. I'm also a fan of the TheraZinc throat spray, and it does contain zinc as well. So that's a big one for me when we're sick, and it really, really helps with sore throat.
00:34:46
Speaker
and obviously that healing zinc topical component. So, so many different beautiful um ways that we can work to not only heal the root cause with these remedies, but then also target specific symptoms like we've talked about from nasal congestion to sore throat to coughs, like um fever included with the Ocelococcinum.

Holistic Medicine Cabinet Overview

00:35:14
Speaker
Um, so a lot of these different things will overlap, but the good thing is everything that we've talked about in our cabinets help to deal with the root cause in some way, sometimes, you know, they all can work together depending as well as help with our symptoms.
00:35:33
Speaker
So it's not, you know, absolutely the worst thing to be feeling under the weather. These will help us feel a little bit better and get us, to ourselves quicker.
00:35:44
Speaker
Well, exactly, Tanya. These things are helping with our symptoms because they're antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial, but they're also getting to that root cause because they're supporting our immune system, which is what needs the most support.
00:35:59
Speaker
I couldn't agree more. So I know that we jumped around, um but I also know that our show notes will give you guys a good idea of maybe not every single one, but a lot of the remedies we talked about. And then you can look further into, as Kim mentioned, the companies of each remedy, and you can start to really have your eyes open to the different things that you can put in your medicine cabinet.
00:36:24
Speaker
Totally.

Teasing Future Episodes and Closing Remarks

00:36:25
Speaker
And we're going to end it in a second, but I wanted to, before we end it, Tanya and I also wanted to talk about, because of course, as holistic nutritionists, we want to talk to you about food that supports your immune system, foods that are antimicrobial, all of those things.
00:36:41
Speaker
But I think, you know, that is going to be another whole episode. So we're going to do a lot more on immune system in the future, but this is, it we just wanted to open our medicine cabinets to you today and kind of give you some ideas. Okay.
00:36:52
Speaker
Yeah, we were really ambitious. And I'm not going to lie. I literally just held up a post-it note that said, kill the food, Kim, because we are going to go way too long. But we're going to, in the near future, again, almost like a three-parter to this, we're going to talk really soon exactly about those healing foods that you mentioned. So That's it.
00:37:12
Speaker
That's all. Medicine cabinets closed. And I mean, here's to hoping that we don't have to open them too often for the treatment part, but line them, have them there just in case because you'll be happy when you do.
00:37:24
Speaker
Absolutely. And reach out if you have any questions. And of course, speak to your practitioner about all of these things. It has been a delight until next week. As always. Thanks, Tanya. Bye everyone. Thanks again for listening. We love y'all.
