Journey from Pilot to Purpose
00:01:04
Speaker
2026. you are listening to this in real time, we are celebrating our new year.
00:01:08
Speaker
um And before we get started, Tanya, I just was thinking about this before we pressed record. And This was actually supposed to be, well, 2025 New Year was actually supposed to be our first podcast recording.
00:01:25
Speaker
I knew as soon as you said, before we get started, because I was thinking the exact same thing. This was going to be our pilot episode and wow, how things changed. And we didn't actually launch this podcast until June of 2025. Yeah.
00:01:47
Speaker
It's true. So for those of you who don't know this, Tanya and I actually started this time exactly last year. This would have been our first podcast that we would have recorded our New Year's episode.
00:01:58
Speaker
And we actually were going to launch our podcast under a different name. We had a very different intention. And it's just so amazing, Tanya, how the universe works, where it just guides you. And and I am so proud of the podcast we actually did launch, our What's My Age Again podcast, and the intention behind it and the episodes that we've done so far. and But like, it's been a year, so...
00:02:23
Speaker
It's wild. Literally, Happy New Year. And me too, Kim. We know that everything works out the way it's meant to work out, even if we don't understand it at the time. And I'm not going to lie, because this is a topic we wanted to talk about, obviously, if we wanted to talk about it last
Rethinking New Year's Resolutions
00:02:41
Speaker
year. We actually recorded what would have been our pilot episode, never released it because we we shifted and we know we evolved and didn't feel 100% right.
00:02:52
Speaker
And listening back to that episode yesterday and then seeing where we are now is night and day. And let me tell you, i feel really proud as well that we waited for things to be more organic and evolve how they should. Because Kim, I cringed just a little bit when I listened to that episode. Not because it wasn't authentic or it wasn't us, but I think we've just grown so much into our roles here and like, this is us. What's our age again is us. The other one, little cringe.
00:03:32
Speaker
It's always the way when we look back at firsts, right? If I look back at my first ever Instagram purse post post, I'm like, wow. Or how about guys, when you get like memories from 12 years ago today and you see what you were just randomly writing on your Facebook page, do you cringe? cause i did Or what I was wearing or my hair. Yeah, totally.
00:03:53
Speaker
I love it. Anyways, to get into today's episode, um we really wanted to celebrate the new year with you. And we wanted to dig into New Year's resolutions because I think I know what we hear out there so much is New Year, New You, right?
00:04:13
Speaker
Absolutely. um That was just a cringe for me now. Absolutely. Absolutely. Right. And so I think we want to talk about, we want to talk about this a little bit about a bit because, you know, for me and I, Tanya, you can talk to your opinions New Year's resolution in a second. But for me, i am always for people making a big change, making a, or making a little change, making any change in a positive direction regarding their health, regarding their business, regarding their personal lives, whatever it may be.
00:04:45
Speaker
But something about, creating this grandiose change is is what we would sort of want to dig into a little bit here.
00:04:58
Speaker
Grandiose. Good word, Kim. I love that. And it's so true. So I'm with you. I'm always behind people at any time of the year. making positive changes and wanting to. So a little bit of what this episode isn't, so you don't turn it off right now and think we're anti like goals or resolutions. It's not a rebellion against like New Year's resolutions, but we really want to kind of dig into the difference between goals and resolutions that are made for the right reasons. Um,
00:05:32
Speaker
goals and resolutions that actually are realistic and fit into your lives and feel aligned and sustainable. So these changes that you can actually see through and not abandon a couple weeks later. So just like you said, Kim, not making these goals just because it's January And because that's what we're supposed to do, right? Doing it just because it's that time of year again. We want to talk about actually making goals and resolutions, whether they are on January 1st at this time of year when you're listening or at any time that you're that are going to be successful.
Aligning Goals with Personal Values
00:06:12
Speaker
Absolutely. Because we all know so many people, you know, how how quickly do those resolutions fade, right? We have all of these great ideas in January 1st.
00:06:24
Speaker
And then what happens a couple weeks later? Exactly. And these things happen for a reason. And we're going to dig into that as well. We're going to kind of take you onto a journey about why these things can fail. And we want to set you up for success in terms of making goals at any time of year and how we can see them through. Because resolutions...
00:06:44
Speaker
they need not be always tied to a calendar date, right? Absolutely. And for me, this is always a big one. Time is a construct. I feel like we live in several different dimensions at once, and so that's a whole other thing. But like, so growth doesn't require a date. Nothing requires a date for that matter. And Kim, I know you're big on this.
00:07:08
Speaker
After the holidays, our nervous systems are often depleted, so it can feel unnatural to make big life changes right on January 1st.
00:07:20
Speaker
No, absolutely. We know, we we talked about this in a previous episode, Tanya, about like, we can have this emotional overload, right? We have, we feel all the joy. And I mean, i hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season so far full of joy. um Parties and entertaining and all the things, but also could be filled with grief, could be filled with loneliness, could be filled with overwhelm in terms of work deadlines nearing the end of year and all the things, right? Not to mention that it's cold and in my case, rainy, and in your case, a blizzard behind you. you know like We've right now.
00:07:58
Speaker
we've got this hibernating feel right right now so so really, January 1st is tough on the nervous system when it comes to totally rejigging our entire life.
00:08:11
Speaker
um Whereas maybe sometime like the spring would be better suited. But you know at the end of the day, as you said, Tanya, time is a construct. And whenever you are ready to make a change, we are behind you. And so if, if you know like in my case, I do love the feeling of a new year. I do love the feeling of new change. And making goals. and And i i do enjoy that. And it works for me.
00:08:39
Speaker
But what we're saying in this episode is creating goals and creating timeline that works for you. It doesn't have to be what you see everyone else doing. Exactly. And for me, for New Year's, in terms of resolutions,
00:08:56
Speaker
It depends on the year, which makes sense because it's not a specific date for me. There have been years where I'm like, yeah, this feels pretty fresh, you know, a new year. like And I have made those goals and those resolutions. And there's years where I don't even really bat an eye that it's January 1st. It doesn't feel like a new cycle for me. So I just continue making my goals.
00:09:17
Speaker
for me. So like the things that we're kind of trying to point out here is not making goals because we feel like we should, or not making goals because we're following suit comparison, what everybody else is doing. Um, not certainly not making these one size fits all resolutions that don't take into account our real life, but making goals and resolutions that are sustainable, supportive, and realistic, and that are your making for the right reasons.
Statistics and Sustainable Change
00:09:51
Speaker
Yeah. I love that, Tanya. And like- It's interesting that you say each year is a new cycle. And I was actually, you know, we're moving out of the year of the snake and we're moving into the year of the horse. And actually this really resonated with me. I saw that on your social media.
00:10:08
Speaker
What's that? You saw that post on your social media and I loved watch they do comparison since that. was Yeah, I really loved that. The past year for me, and actually the past couple of years for me, I think I talked about this last year, I was really working on my nervous system. I'm really working on, there was a lot of shedding happening, shedding of old ideas, shedding of ways that I used to think, limiting beliefs, that sort of thing. And going into this next year, year I feel this new energy, this kind of charge forward. And so a lot of my goals are surrounding my business and what I'm going to do. So I feel like this taking care of and nurturing side of me that really I was trying to do last year, my goals were more of like what to get rid of. And this year it's more of like, okay, I'm ready. let's I've got some action items here.
00:11:00
Speaker
This is an amazing point because a lot of times traditional New Year's resolutions focus on a one size fits all mentality. So you just said business and shedding. I'm going to say most people, when we think of New Year's resolution, we think of weight, weight,
00:11:17
Speaker
for all of the wrong reasons, not necessarily to lose that weight for that health, for that insulin resistance, for the impact on your joints. We think of weight for those, you know, reasons of being like everybody else and fitting into that box. We think of diet, but we think of diet as massive restrictions, cutting out food groups or calorie counting. We think of exercise. Again, we love movement, but super intense, like exercise.
00:11:42
Speaker
super, you know, lose weight kind of thing, not as intentional as we say, listen to our body. And you just said something completely out of the box. So I think that's something so important. A lot of us, when we're thinking of these new year's resolutions, it almost feels rushed and pressured and we fall into those major one size fits all, but you just gave a perfect example that when it does feel right, you're making something that is completely for yourself.
00:12:12
Speaker
And with intention, I think that that's sort of a theme that surrounds this podcast, right, is in being intentional about what you're moving into and what what your goals are. And if your goals are to lose weight, that's great. um But as Tanya said...
00:12:30
Speaker
being intentional about how this fits into your life. What action steps can you take to achieve that goal that's actually going to be sustainable so that when you get to next year, you've been moving in that right direction. You're not stopping six months later because it's feeling too difficult.
00:12:48
Speaker
And we're fine with feeling difficult. there's There's going to be things that you're going to need to push for sure, but it needs to be sustainable and to be able to fit into your life. I love it. So the growth happens in difficult times. We do the difficult things. If everything was easy, we wouldn't be moving. But there's a difference between difficult things and things that just are impossible.
00:13:14
Speaker
setting ourselves up for success or failure. So here's a perfect example. I want to lose, this is, I'm just putting this out there. It's not my resolution, but the perfect ones that we've probably all said in our lifetime as women, most of us, I want to lose 25 pounds by the summer, right? Because then all of a sudden it's like,
00:13:31
Speaker
Summer bod, hot girl bod. That's a different episode for June. But anyways, so we put that out there. All right. But we do it with a very restrictive diet.
00:13:41
Speaker
We do it with saying we're going to get up and go to the gym at 4.30 a.m. m when it's We know it's not a possibility. We put this huge... goal on ourself to go from zero to a thousand. And then I Googled and looked up data on new year's resolutions. So listen to this. This is literally right from multiple studies merged together.
00:14:03
Speaker
So in the first week, 23 to 25% of people give up. I'm going to relate this back in a second to that resolution. But By the end of the month, 40% to 60% are done.
00:14:15
Speaker
The overall failure is some sources suggest 80% fail within the first month with only 9% achieving their goals by year end. So interesting, Tanya. Yeah, 80%. 80%. That's...
00:14:33
Speaker
That's incredible statistics. And I feel it's because most of us are not necessarily making resolutions with intention as you manage and sustainable. We're making intentions and, sorry, we're making resolutions that...
00:14:50
Speaker
are harder to achieve because they don't fit into our life and they're not realistic for us. Am I not saying you guys, we can lose 25 pounds by June? Absolutely. But we need to make these resolutions in intentional ways that are sustainable, that we're not setting ourselves up from failure, from the get-go.
00:15:10
Speaker
Absolutely, Tanya. And actually, i think we talked about this in another episode and we talked about habits. Because one of the biggest challenges that I see with clients, and I know you've talked about this too, Tanya, is when people try and go this all or nothing approach. It might work for some. I mean, I've talked about my own health journey in the past, and there were certain things that I went all in for because I was at rock bottom in my mind, and I hit the ground running. I just overhaul. But that doesn't necessarily work for all. Right? right? Unless you have a major why that's driving you forward to keep you going, likely
00:15:51
Speaker
You'll feel this real, you know, ah January 1st, you feel this real motivation. But if this is, if you are doing too much, if it is not sustainable, you're going to be that 80% that falls off. So what I love to say to clients first is take an inventory of your life. Look at what's realistic within your life. Tanya, you talked about the gym at 4 a.m. If going to the gym at 4 a.m. m is not realistic, I don't know, you have small children at home, you don't have a somebody, your you're, you're,
00:16:20
Speaker
your partner's out of the house, whatever it may be, you you feel like you're not going to be able to get up or get enough sleep because you don't go to bed until late, whatever the the the challenges may be, think about are you going to be sustainable with that 4 a.m. workout six weeks from now?
00:16:37
Speaker
Or is it better to find a different time that works for you and will work for your calendar six weeks from now, a year from now? Right. So then you're not falling off when you realize that you knew that it wasn't going to work. And one week into it, it's not. And it's done now. And here's the thing.
00:16:56
Speaker
Pressure to create these huge resolutions on a certain date, January 1st. Pressure creates stress. That's a general statement. And that applies to anything in life. And pressure does not create sustainability. Sustainability.
00:17:13
Speaker
So that's the problem right there is if something is not sustainable and we have this pressure of these huge, grandiose ideas of resolutions, they won't be sustainable.
00:17:25
Speaker
It'll end up dysregulating the nervous system and, We speak from experience ourselves, and you ladies all know this. When your nervous system is extremely dysregulated, it makes consistency in anything nearly impossible. Consistency even in making the meals that you normally make or keeping on you know what I mean, on track of your daily lives or your jobs. So how do you think it's going to make your consistency of a brand new resolution that you haven't planned into your personal life?
Overcoming the All-or-Nothing Mentality
00:17:58
Speaker
Absolutely. And it's it it goes back to that balancing act that we talked about, because obviously any new change that you make, new movement routine, let's go back to that example.
00:18:11
Speaker
there is going to be some sort of pressure associated with that. there's going to be It's going to be difficult. I mean, a yoga teacher, I think I've said this before, once always said to me, the hardest thing is getting to your mat. So yes, fitting in this new schedule might be difficult, but we don't want it to feel impossible. We want it to be realistic within your calendar. because And I know we go back to the whole thing of saying like, oh,
00:18:35
Speaker
We don't have time. We don't have time. Create the time. That's going to be the difficulty. Create the space in your calendar, but create the space that's realistic with your lifestyle.
00:18:46
Speaker
and And that might change month to month, but make sure you have it in your calendar and create that space. Even what we were talking about with dietary changes, Tanya, too. People can go...
00:18:57
Speaker
You were talking about a restrictive diet. That is not sustainable long term. It's just not. Like working. so So take a look and make those small changes over time that are going to be sustainable and lead to lasting health. One thing I do also like to say is think about in terms of cumulative. Right.
00:19:18
Speaker
right? little changes that you're making towards your big goal of, say, as you said, Tanya, losing 25 pounds, these little changes that you make daily that become habits are going to be cumulative, like compound interest. I think you talked about that in another podcast.
00:19:38
Speaker
It's going to compound towards your goal as opposed to making these drastic changes up front that may not be sustainable over time. Right. It's like building a pyramid. It's like building anything. We need to have a strong base before we can build up. And you're right. There are that small amount of the population who can go from zero to a thousand. And we're not talking to you guys. And it's working for you because it's structured into your life and you stay on it. But for most of us, it's just not how we work. And these big goals, these zero to 1000 goals,
00:20:13
Speaker
really solely rely on willpower when the goals are unrealistic and they don't rely on systems and support. So one thing I think is so important to realize is that willpower alone is not attainable for anybody to reach goals. Because we can have all the willpower we want, but if we don't have the systems in place and the support in place, it's not gonna work. And this is why I think so many of us feel like we fail when really it's our structure that's failed us. I love that, Tanya, because the guilt is associated with that, right? And the first thought is, I don't have enough willpower. No, you do. It's just exactly as you said, Tanya, take a look at the system and structure that you've put in place to support you in achieving that goal.
00:21:05
Speaker
That is what's failing you, not that willpower. And that's what we want it kind of get across to right now is we go through cycles and we don't want this to be another cycle for any of us, for ourselves even of, oh, another failed resolution while there's always next year. It's, you know, that that we want to take away that guilt and have you really examine, like, could you have succeeded no matter what, like, was this always destined to fail? Cause it was just your willpower, which you have. We have that willpower.
00:21:39
Speaker
This is a reminder that the goals that we set, whether it's at new years or any other time of the year, they don't need to be drama queen dramatic.
00:21:51
Speaker
Growth, almost the, in my opinion anyways, the best kind of growth is always quiet, slow, gentle, but still powerful. Like you said, Kim, that building up momentum, compound interest, building the pyramid. However, planting the seed and watching the tree grow, we're not going to get flowers on our cherry blossom tree before we get a root system, a trunk, branches, and a leaves, right?
00:22:19
Speaker
Absolutely, Tanya. And it's like, it goes back to this, take a look at your goal, whatever it may be, or call it a resolution, and then think break it down, break it down into those smaller chunks where you can make these lasting habits cumulative over time. And I love how you said it, Tanya. um Again, I think this was in a previous episode when we were talking about habits and you were saying that, you know, whatever it may be, you like to make things organic before you move on to that next. That can be really helpful too. Instead of going from all or nothing You start with these little habits that are going to point you in your right direction, make them organic, and then move on to the next. Make a six-week plan for yourself.
00:23:08
Speaker
Rather than changing everything day one, make a plan so that week by week you're adding to it so that you can achieve your goal. Exactly. And that's the way that I work with my clients. And I'm pretty sure it's the way you do as well. And the feedback that I have, and I love it, when you see a client for the first time and you know you start with the beginning steps, they're leery. They're like, this you know how am I going to fit this in? You're going to fit it in one thing at a time. And then my favorite part, I just had a call with a client last week that changed my entire life. life, probably the highest point in my practice was a call from this client, a phone call from this client. um
00:23:50
Speaker
And then what he did mention in that, aside from his huge successes after a year of working with me is, you're right, all the things that I thought were going to be hard, I did one thing at a time. He said, now, I can't imagine my life without this, this and this because it's become organic. So the same thing in our healing journeys is in our resolution journeys is exactly one small thing at a time. Build the system. And here's always another thing I say.
00:24:21
Speaker
We have big dreams and big minds and big goals as human beings. This is a good one for me and you, Kim. I know you. Start smaller than you think.
Building Supportive Systems
00:24:34
Speaker
Okay? And I equate that to when you're making the soup...
00:24:38
Speaker
Don't add all the salt at the start because you can't take it out. wait Start small and then you're like, okay, I got this. Oh, I got this faster than I thought I would. Now let me build on it and watch me fly, right?
00:24:51
Speaker
I love that, Tanya, so much because it can feel overwhelming the other way. And then you throw your hands up in the air and give up. We don't want that to happen, right? this is this is Think about climbing a mountain. This is a climb, right? this is You don't just get to the top in one jump. You slowly get there. And over time, like we said, the other piece of it is Over this time, and for your client, Tanya, I'm sure there were these wins along the way. There are wins along the way that are going to be like, huh, this is why I'm doing this. Yes. Right? Right.
00:25:27
Speaker
i A thousand percent, like nail on the head. So for anybody- Oh, can I say one more thing? Please. I think one of the biggest things, and this is something that I had a few years ago, um really started implementing in my own life, specifically when it comes to my business, but it can also very much be applied to health, is action, right? Like we talked about the year of the horse coming up and this action time that in the collective energy, this is a great time for action.
00:25:58
Speaker
You've got all these ideas, as Tanya said, there are all these to-dos and all these ways you're going to change your diet and lifestyle. But what we need to do is keep moving forward bit by bit, creating these actions, daily actions that are going to help you get to that final goal.
00:26:16
Speaker
Love it. And you made me think about, um was actually a podcast I was listening to and probably last year with all of these ideas that we often have, whether it's for goals or our day-to-day life or our to-do list or things we just want to do, let's say around the house. So we have this list and we keep adding to it.
00:26:33
Speaker
but we never actually get to the contents of the list. So yes, all of these big ideas, the best place is to just kind of pick a spot, pick your starting point and start and make that your building block. Keep listing those ideas as they come to You might have a hundred on there, but don't forget to actually start the list and execute it. Cause so much, so many times we get caught up in the building and all that, you know, and we don't get to the doing and that can kind of sometimes feel like a failure as well Yeah, absolutely.
Understanding Motivations and Prioritization
00:27:05
Speaker
And I think, you know, what we learned, Tanya, like doing our latest program within the Consistency Collective and the intention behind that was to, if you fall off, if things get hard, when things get busy, because inevitably we said that things were busy during the holiday season, but let's face it, it's not going to change now that we're in January. It's still going to be busy. There's still goingnna it's our life, right? Yeah.
00:27:33
Speaker
We don't have to wait till next January to restart. No. So if in six weeks you start falling off some of those, you know, action items or goals that you had in mind, start back that same day. Start back the next day. Don't wait until spring. Don't wait until next week. Don't wait until next year.
00:27:52
Speaker
The whole point is these action steps forward and you can restart and start whenever you like, whatever day in the calendar year it is. Absolutely. And i think that right now, if you're somebody listening to this, no matter what time of year you're listening to it, yeah if you feel called right now that you have some goals and some changes that are stirring up in you, I encourage you, we encourage you, get those kind of concrete, write those down, jot them down, and choose them based on
00:28:29
Speaker
how they match your current energy, your nervous system, how they're going to fit into your real life. And don't choose these goals if they're rooted in like any feelings like guilt, shame, comparisons, a big one, social norms, expectations.
00:28:46
Speaker
Make your goals not because you feel pressured to make your goals, but because you're being called to and you're ready to make some changes in your life.
00:28:57
Speaker
Absolutely. And I think another big one is determine your why, because when it gets hard, you can go back to why am I doing all this hard work? And and the why is a big motivator for so many people. And the other thing is don't do it alone.
00:29:15
Speaker
Because as Tanya said, the support, you talked about systems in the plan, but also the support. And so whether it be a friend that's going to motivate you to go to the gym every day with them or a holistic nutritionist like Tanya or I to help with the diet and lifestyle and stress management and all the things, or a personal trainer, whoever that person is for you, have them surrounding you, especially at the beginning of your journey to keep to get you going and to keep you motivated.
00:29:44
Speaker
Absolutely. And I think that It would be a huge disservice not to kind of reframe work what you just said, you know, as we end this episode, because it was so powerful. Our whys are also going to determine the intensity of which we put these resolutions and goals into place in our life. That was so valuable, Kim. And you said that in conversation and we just, we didn't gloss over it, but you were using it earlier in the podcast. But I just jotted that down because I wanted to, it's worth repeating that,
00:30:16
Speaker
Our whys might be really intense or I want to say crucial at some point, like Kim's why when she was looking at her autoimmune disease and like that was a hard why. That was an intense why that needed immediate attention where you had to go from zero to a thousand.
00:30:34
Speaker
Our whys are always going to be louder or a little bit more quiet when we can be be a little bit more lax and choose the intensity of which we're heading towards a goal or resolution. But like you said, the why is always there. So come back to it. So we're not knocking going zero to a thousand when the why is crucial or critical. Make sure...

I think your intentions and your goals come back to your whys and not any of those other outside reasons that we've talked about. And if our goals always come back and our resolutions to our whys,
00:31:08
Speaker
then I think we're setting ourselves up for success and building systems and structures around that and not just relying on willpower because the whys are what's driving us.
00:31:19
Speaker
Absolutely. And write it down. Put it somewhere you can see it. the why Your why could be the reason you don't press snooze in the morning and actually get up to get to do that movement routine or the meditation that you that you want to do or whatever it may be.
00:31:34
Speaker
Because as it it is true, and you can apply this to fitness or you can apply it to whatever. Getting to the mat is the hardest part. You know, pressing snooze is the hardest part. Putting the Vitamix on with the smoothie is the hardest part. Like, because, at and and getting yourself there, the why can be so helpful.
00:31:57
Speaker
I couldn't agree more. And I hope that this podcast has clarified to all of you listening that are working on your goals right now and your resolutions to really put that thought and intention in there because you know what?
00:32:15
Speaker
You might fail on some. I might still fail on some too. And I do. um But take the guilt out of that and maybe use that as a tool to reframe and re-examine why.
00:32:26
Speaker
and maybe it was your willpower and maybe you just shifted and that's okay as well. And like Kim said, don't wait until next year, next quarter, whatever it is. Just make every day Any resolutions or goals that come up, just put that intention into them and really focus on making them fit into your life where you're at. Because you guys, you can achieve your goals and resolutions. It's just how do we reframe and restructure them to set ourselves up for success.
00:32:58
Speaker
I love it. And I know we want we're ram ramping down, but can I just say one more thing in terms of maybe instead of saying willpower, we can say priority.
00:33:09
Speaker
Because I don't necessarily think it's about willpower. Maybe it's more about prioritizing. So if you have the why... Are you still prioritizing that same goal that you had in mind if you're falling off, right? And like you said, Tanya, I love that you just said, when you fall off, it's not a failure. It's a time to examine, time to relook.
00:33:36
Speaker
Is it my willpower? Is it me prioritizing this goal? Is it the structure that I have in place? Is it the support that I need? Where is this? What what do I need support with?
00:33:50
Speaker
I love it. Or is it simply, has my why shifted? Have I kind of achieved what I needed to or realized that's not really a priority why anymore? And this is now my why. So now my resolutions and goals and priorities surrounding the why are shifting.
Conclusion and New Year Wishes
00:34:09

00:34:29
Speaker
Exactly. I love it, Tanya. Yeah. New years, new you is not necessarily a thing. In my opinion, you're right. Consistent work in progress is always. I don't think I'm ever a new me. I'm an ever evolving, growing me.
