It's not like a, ooh, summer's coming. There's an undercurrent of heat there. It's like, oh, it feels like a fall day.

00:02:05
Jeff Rogers

00:02:07
Jeff Rogers
i do. Okay. Cute little one. okay you want me go first, then you go? Go for it. Okay.
00:02:15
Jeff Rogers
Zoe's owner was gaming at his PC one afternoon when the usually quiet pup suddenly began barking uncontrollably while staring out the front window. Her frantic behavior was so unusual that it immediately caught her owner's attention.
00:02:28
Jeff Rogers
When he looked outside, he saw a little boy, no older than three, wandering up a neighbor's driveway and into their backyard. Realizing no one was home at the house, the man asked nearby neighbors if they recognized the child, but no one did.
00:02:42
Jeff Rogers
With the help of two neighbors, they tried to speak to the boy, who was silent and only shrugged. While the neighbors walked the child around the street searching for his family, Zoe's owner called 911.
00:02:53
Jeff Rogers
To his surprise, the operator quickly confirmed they had found the missing child and sent police officers to the scene within a minute. When I called after, saying my location, Aww.
00:03:11
Jeff Rogers
it turned out the boy had been missing for about thirty minutes having wandered away from a busy road half a mile away his family was overwhelmed with the relief when they were reunited later two officers visited zoe's home to finish their report and made sure to give the heroic plenty of love ah she proudly soaked up all the pets and scratches and the praise that she deserved That's a good one.
00:03:34
Jeff Rogers
Good story. Look at Zoe. She's so happy. She's so pretty. She is. That was a good one. Yeah. Good job. Way to go, Zoe. Where was that? What website is that?
Bob Ross: A Gentle Icon's Journey
00:03:45
Jeff Rogers
Sunny Skies. They have the best stories. They have the best stories. They do. Okay. So mine came from an Instagram account that we'll link in the show notes.
00:03:56
Jeff Rogers
Okay. He's awesome. Andy is his name. Um... So I went a little bit more in depth because I love this story and I like this person. So Robert was born in Florida and he dropped out of high school in the ninth grade. But in 1961, an 18 year old Robert ah enlisted in the United States Air Force.
00:04:17
Jeff Rogers
he was put in toer um He was put into service as a medical records technician. Robert rose to the rank of Master Sergeant and served as First Sergeant of the clinic at Ilson Air Force Base in Alaska, where he first saw the snow and the mountains.
00:04:33
Jeff Rogers
Because he's a Florida kid, you know? Robert. Very dramatic snow. Very, and very different from Florida. But he held military positions that required him to act tough and act very mean.
00:04:45
Jeff Rogers
And at one point he was a drill sergeant and he was also known as quote, the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the guy who makes you make your bed and the guy who screams at you for being late to work.
00:04:56
Jeff Rogers
So Robert decided that when he got out of the military, he would never raise his voice again because he did not like that. He didn't like being that person. But during his 20 year Air Force career, Robert developed an interest in painting after attending an art class in Anchorage.
00:05:14
Jeff Rogers
He found himself frequently at odds with many of his painting instructors who were more interested in abstract painting. Robert said, they'd tell you what makes a tree, but they wouldn't tell you how to paint a tree.
00:05:27
Jeff Rogers
So Robert returned to Florida. um He studied painting and he became a travel salesman and a tutor. Somebody who knew him and attended one of his sessions in Clearwater, Florida, convinced Robert he would succeed on his own.
00:05:41
Jeff Rogers
So with the help of others, he started a business. The business struggled at first. His trademark permed hairstyle came about as cost-cutting measure when his regular military-esque crew-cut haircuts were becoming too expensive.
00:05:59
Jeff Rogers
Robert later said he didn't like the hairstyle, but he couldn't change it because it was was depicted on the company logo. What? What's going on? You know, yes. In 1982, station in Falls Church, Virginia, aired a taping of his art class as a pilot, and 60 PBS stations around the country signed up for the show in the first year.
00:06:24
Jeff Rogers
In 1983, PBS gave him a TV show with the promise of a creative freedom that he would have, and he loved the staff. He moved home to Florida in 1989, but continued to travel to Indiana every three months to tape the show.
00:06:39
Jeff Rogers
Bob Ross said he did the show he did the show for free and he made his income from how to do books, like do-it-yourself books and videotapes and art supplies. During each half-hour segment, Robert, or Bob Ross, instructed the viewers in a quick oil painting technique, painting a scene without sketching it first, by creating the image directly from his imagination in real time.
00:07:05
Jeff Rogers
He explained his limited paint palette, deconstructing the process into simple steps. The show ran from January 11, 1983 to May 17, 1994.
00:07:18
Jeff Rogers
But reruns still continue to appear in many broadcast areas and countries, including the non-commercial digital subchannel Create and streaming on Hulu.
00:07:30
Jeff Rogers
Ross's likeness has become part of popular culture with his image spoofed in television programs, films, and video games like The Family Guy, The Boondocks, Deadpool 2, and something called Smile.
00:07:45
Jeff Rogers
Google celebrated his 70th anniversary of his birth with a Google Doodle on October 29th, 2012.
The Lasting Influence of Bob Ross
00:07:54
Jeff Rogers
His show, The Joy of Painting, became a cultural phenomenon in part due to his soothing voice and his ability to make painting seem accessible and joy and enjoyable for everybody.
00:08:06
Jeff Rogers
Happy little tree. Yes, yes. And mountains. No mistakes. No mistakes. Bob Ross's voice was intentionally soft and gentle, a deliberate choice that helped create a sense of peace and relaxation for viewers.
00:08:20
Jeff Rogers
He used his voice, that voice, to provide words of affirmation and encouragement to his audience, helping them feel confident in their ability to paint. Even after his passing, Bob Ross's legacy continues to live on through his show and his positive attitude, reminding people to embrace their creativity and find joy in the process.
00:08:41
Jeff Rogers
And that's the story of Bob Ross. Bob Ross, who what a man. That's a good way to start a Monday. Isn't that? Don't you love that? I do. And I love that 20 years in the Air Force, even being a drill sergeant.
00:08:54
Jeff Rogers
I want to know what his soldiers, like if they ever saw him in that next role, ever saw him and were like, wait a second. Was that our drill sergeant?
00:09:06
Jeff Rogers
That guy? Was that Sergeant Ross? They probably did, but then they were like the perm. The perm, what? Yeah. That's awesome. Well done. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's my little story for the week. And you all, it's Monday.
00:09:22
Jeff Rogers
And it's going to be a good week. It's going to be a great week. It's going be great week. So go out and do your thing. And have a good one. And we will see you on Thursday with a regular show. Bye.
