Greetings and Monday Reminiscing

00:00:19
Jeff Rogers
Hello. Hi. Samantha. Jeffrey. How you doing? I'm good. How are you? Happy Monday. Happy Monday. Tis another one. It's another Monday. Here we are again.
00:00:30
Jeff Rogers
nineteenth of May. We're solidly in mid-May. What the hell? Where did it It's fast. Remember when... we made plans for our trip and we like, oh, we've got plenty of time to like plot out everything and plan and whatnot. And then we were like, wait, oh my God, that's not as far away as we thought.
00:00:51
Jeff Rogers
It happens. It happened for London. Yeah. We plan that one six months ahead What's our next one? Uh, oh yeah. That seems like way away. It seems like it's far away, but it's not.
00:01:06
Jeff Rogers
I mean, it's January. I hope you're ready for that. It's going to be insane. i got to do some serious Googles to figure out.
00:01:16
Jeff Rogers
Well, the paperwork says everything. Yeah. I just need to figure out like I need to, I don't quite have clothing that fits that. Oh yeah. Environment. Yeah. So I'm going to have to. Yeah.
00:01:33
Jeff Rogers
We'll do it. We'll be great. We will indeed. It'll be great. All the whole new, it'll be grand. Very grand grand. The grandest.

Introduction to Sticky Note Episode

00:01:41
Jeff Rogers
So we have happy stories for you today. we do. Why do we have happy stories? What is this episode, Jeff? So this is a sticky note episode.
00:01:47
Jeff Rogers
And what that means is, you tell me what that means, Sam. So we started this whole process with obviously the concept of rabbit holes and sticky notes, right? Yeah.
00:01:59
Jeff Rogers
Ashley gave us the idea because she went down a rabbit hole. She had sticky notes all over computer. And so we have our every week Thursday episodes, and those are our longer-ish, like 40 minutes to an hour, i guess. And that's where Jeff and I tell each other ah ah totally unrelated story, and neither of us knows what's going on.
00:02:20
Jeff Rogers
They're longer, darker, typically. Sometimes they're not. um I mean, last Thursdays was fun. Yeah, it was. George's death. Yes, it was. Yeah, that was a fun one. It was. But sometimes they're dark. Anyway, that's not what the Mondays are for.
00:02:33
Jeff Rogers
Yeah. Mondays, we started out with just shorter stories, a quick snippet episode that can fill in the gap. If you have... a shorter drive to work or if you're just doing a short task and you want to still listen to us for whatever reason um are short episodes are you out walking right now yeah are you jogging mowing your lawn mowing your lawn pouring a drink sitting by the pool but ours we kind of developed into this happy monday
00:03:04
Jeff Rogers
And I think that it gives a lot of people a good way to start their week. So now we tell each other short little stories. Sometimes it's just one story. Sometimes it's both of us share. um But it's to lift you up, give you a little snippet of us.
00:03:17
Jeff Rogers
And we try and keep this as clean as we can so that this one's a little bit more family friendly.

Samantha's Instagram Share

00:03:22
Jeff Rogers
There is an Instagram video that I just saw today ah Jennifer Coolidge.
00:03:28
Jeff Rogers
She, I guess, was a guest speaker at Emerson College. And so her thank you video to Emerson for inviting her to speak was of her riding on a lawnmower.
00:03:40
Jeff Rogers
Standing, riding on a lawnmower. There was nothing said. She was just trying to figure out the lawnmower. i swear to God, I love her She can do nothing wrong. It was such a fun video. I watched it a couple of times. I'm like, what the hell is this? Why don't you send it to me?
00:03:55
Jeff Rogers
I will. Thank you. I don't know why I didn't. we have a We have quite the um shared videos.

Humorous Printer Discussion

00:04:02
Jeff Rogers
We do. Oh, I'll also put together a printer.
00:04:06
Jeff Rogers
Can you believe that shit? That is a really pretty printer. It is. Does it say brother on it? Yes. That's weird. Like big brother. Well, that was the... Look, I hopped on Reddit. Reddit told me the best brand to buy.
00:04:18
Jeff Rogers
best brand buy. Yes. Say that 10 times fast. I know. I'll fuck that up.
00:04:25
Jeff Rogers
Darn. Darn it. Darn it, Sam. Darn It's okay. We're allowed to have one fuck up. Two.
00:04:36
Jeff Rogers

00:04:50
Jeff Rogers
that was just so good sam she really didn't mean to that sounded like you meant for that to happen but she did not mean for that to happen and her face the moment that second one came out of her mouth was just priceless okay let's move on okay okay happy monday happy monday so you want to go first you want me to go first you go first i went first last time How do you know that? I don't. I just pulled it out my ear.
00:05:18
Jeff Rogers
Okay. mr
00:05:21
Jeff Rogers
Okay. Ready? Yeah. Ready? See. Okay.

Inspiring Story of Peg Leg Bennett

00:05:28
Jeff Rogers
Peg Leg Bennett.
00:05:32
Jeff Rogers
Off to a great start. Was born with a breath defect that led to the amputation of his foot when he was a baby. But the 55-year-old never let that impede his pursuit of his passion.
00:05:48
Jeff Rogers
And that passion was surfing. The father of three has traveled the world surfing, making it to some of the most famous big wave surfing spots like Indonesia, Hawaii, Australia, and Portugal.
00:06:01
Jeff Rogers
He also represented his country in para-surfing championship and pioneered some best practices in making prosthetic legs for surfers. That's amazing, isn't it? That's wild. i mean, that's so cool.
00:06:15
Jeff Rogers
Bennett was born with the ankle of his left leg missing and his foot locking are looking twisted and mingled. At the hospital, his parents were given the choice of amputation, which the doctor said would actually ensure that he had a better quality of life.
00:06:31
Jeff Rogers
Benet said, quote, the ocean is my happy place. And he legally changed his name to Peg Leg. That was a childhood nickname in 2016. He changed it in 2016.
00:06:43
Jeff Rogers
He said, quote, when I'm riding a wave, nothing else matters. Nothing is there. It's just me and that wave and the feeling butli that glide that ride.
00:06:53
Jeff Rogers
and that ride He told the British media outlet SWNS that he grew up a, quote, water baby. And given that his father was a big swimmer, the progression to surfing came naturally despite his missing foot.
00:07:08
Jeff Rogers
His doctors, ah he describes, quote, harassing the UK's National Health Service for years. And eventually they gave him what they he called his beach activities leg. And then his surfing progressed at a phenomenal rate.
00:07:24
Jeff Rogers
Peg Leg Bennett during a surf session in Perinporth Beach, there's a picture of him that we're gonna post of him actually on the surfboard. ah After learning to surf on it, Bennett drilled holes in that first prosthetic leg to improve its functionality.
00:07:39
Jeff Rogers
And this leg led to a phenomenal surfing career. Quote, there's a big wave spot in Portugal portugal called Nazare, he said. at the start of listing every spot that he enjoyed, he listed he's been along the European coast, he's driven to the Moroccan coast right down to the Occidental Sahara, he's been to Hawaii and all over the states, Indonesia, Japan, and he's even surfed in the Arctic Circle.
00:08:05
Jeff Rogers
His new leg made from carbon fiber and titanium has taken his surfing to a new level, he said. I have a surf-specific leg. It's got a titanium ankle joint in it so he can stand on the board and use it even better.
00:08:22
Jeff Rogers
For his whole adult life, Bennett has been at the crest of the wave of parasurfing, which has undergone a revolutionary transformation. The turning point came in 2015 when the International Surfing Association hosted the first Adaptive Surfing World Championships, bringing together surfers from all the other nations.
00:08:40
Jeff Rogers
Since then, the sport has exploded in popularity with the adaptive adaptive surfing and parasurfing community becoming the fastest growing segment of the surfing world. It's to be a lot of people that have been eaten by sharks. Oh my god.
00:08:53
Jeff Rogers
Team England para surfing team is now ranked seventh in the world, led by Bennett's instruction and inspiration. He explained that within the para surfing community, there are people with all kinds of disabilities.
00:09:07
Jeff Rogers
He said, quote, I've coached someone with cerebral palsy, MS, and I've got some blind guys that I coach. Obviously, some amputees, said. Quote, if somebody's got a disability and they want to get in the ocean and catch waves, I can make it happen.
00:09:23
Jeff Rogers
He said, quote, I don't believe in barriers. I believe in we can do it. Although para surfing narrowly missed out on the 2028 Los Angeles games, there's a strong hope for its inclusion in the Paralympics in Brisbane in 2032 and the opportunities that could bring for extra funding.
00:09:43
Jeff Rogers
Pretty amazing guy. Way to go, Peg Leg. Amazing. And I love that he changed his name to that. i Own it. Own it. Right? That's what we say. own it. Yep. Oh, I love that.
00:09:55
Jeff Rogers
Also, someone with cerebral palsy and MS on surfboards, like, that's amazing. Just imagine the happiness in their soul when they're getting to do something they may have always wanted to do, but they hadn't had the were told that they couldn't. Right.
00:10:10
Jeff Rogers
You know, like you'll never be able to do that. I mean, it just kind of makes me think of your, that one story, bring it back to Mott's, the kid who, he lived a very full life, touched hundreds of people because of him not letting his disability define him. Oh, I love it.
00:10:29
Jeff Rogers
Own it. Oh, okay.

Viral Act of Kindness on the Tube

00:10:32
Jeff Rogers
So I frequently like to remind people and myself that we never know what other people are going through and we never know what simple little moment can change things for them.
00:10:44
Jeff Rogers
Sometimes I remember that a smile or simply saying good morning can change a crappy day for somebody or can change a crappy week. We rush through life trying to get to the next, quote, important thing or just to escape privacy, to the privacy and peace of our own space.
00:11:00
Jeff Rogers
In doing so, we tend to forget to interact with or even acknowledge those around us. um This story is the reminder that it's okay to share a part of your happiness and inner peace with strangers.
00:11:14
Jeff Rogers
Faiyashayo Bakare was riding the London Underground, also called the Tube, one day a few weeks ago when he changed somebody's life. He's a very tall man and in some ways could appear intimidating at first glance, merely because of his size.
00:11:30
Jeff Rogers
The day on the tube, he noticed a young lady who was visibly upset. She was crying and unable to hide it. He noticed her and wanted to check if she was okay. However, being self-aware of his imposing and intimidating size, he didn't want to approach her or scare her.
00:11:46
Jeff Rogers
In an attempt to get her attention, he lowered his head down until his face was directly in her line of sight. When they made eye contact, he used simple hand gestures to ask if she was okay. When she nodded and gave him a thumbs up, he smiled at her and gave her a thumbs up back.
00:12:01
Jeff Rogers
She smiled and wiped away her tears. Bakari got off on the next stop, but on his way out, he gave her a fist bump and another smile. He posted his story on TikTok because he was impressed with the human ability to fully communicate without speaking a single word.
00:12:17
Jeff Rogers
He said, I hope I helped her feel a little bit better too. It's not nice being upset and alone in any situation. Comments poured in and the internet loved it. One of those comments was from the girl on the tube.
00:12:31
Jeff Rogers
She said, i think that was me. The Victoria line, you were my guardian angel that day. So the direct and more articulate way of saying what I like to say, a small, wordless act of human connection can leave a deep and lasting impact.
00:12:48
Jeff Rogers
Absolutely. That was good. Just simple, small. And it went viral. It went viral. just think that people long for that kind of happiness, and that's why that stuff goes about viral.
00:13:00
Jeff Rogers
People also like to see the bad stuff, but stuff like this that goes viral kind of reminds you we need that kind of happiness, right? Just little simple joys. Yes, a little glimmer. And to see that there's other people that are happy and making others happy. Mm-hmm.
00:13:16
Jeff Rogers
fixing their days. So that's kind of what we try and do on these Mondays. Just give you a little bit of a the good that's going on. And Thursdays we take it away. We do.
00:13:27
Jeff Rogers
Just kidding.

Preview of Upcoming Episodes

00:13:28
Jeff Rogers
Not always. Not always. Mostly. ah This next Thursday there's ah kind of a special show. So it's going to be Sam telling a two-parter.
00:13:41
Jeff Rogers
We're little mini-series. yeah So yeah, the last two The last two Thursdays in May will be just me telling a story that is near and dear my dark heart. That she has raved about. And I have no idea what it's about.
00:13:58
Jeff Rogers
Yeah. It's good. it's some But it's more, you know, the so reason it's so long is because, or the reason that it's two parts is because it's long. It goes far more intricate than what we normally do.
00:14:12
Jeff Rogers
so I, out of all people, understand that. I mean, I've shown up to this table with books sometimes. Well, as I was writing it, you know, I mean, I was panicking because I couldn't get it any shorter. The shortest I could get it, I think, was like 23 pages or something. And then I just felt like I was missing things.
00:14:33
Jeff Rogers
So me, where my longest story ever is has been seven pages, and that was like big font, I... was like, I don't know how I'm going to do this. I can't make this one show. So we decided to switch it up for this story and see how it goes. so So you will get that for the next two Thursdays.
00:14:53
Jeff Rogers
Sam telling her story. I cannot wait. I can't wait for your reaction. I will give you my reaction as we go. Indeed. is that all? It is, except we want you guys to follow us, rate us, review us, leave us a comment.
00:15:08
Jeff Rogers
great Rate, rate, rate. That helps us. We need help. We need so much help. we need so much help. For so many reasons. Yes. Also rate us. And we hope you enjoyed the show and we will see you next time.
00:15:20
Jeff Rogers
Bye.
