Welcome,

Introduction to Astrobot

00:01:08
Speaker
everyone, to a special DLC episode of Games Over Plastic. I'm your host for this week, Hodge, and I'm joined, as always, by our are my lovely co-host, Sean Mason. How you doing? I'm doing great. I can't wait. We're talking about Astrobot today, um one of the best games of the year. I'm going to say it right now.
00:01:28
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, we'll talk more about that aspect of it when we get to an episode later on in the year. But for now, we're just going to talk about Astrobot and do a spoiler cast because me and Sean both loved this game. ah Midnight is not joining us because as everyone knows who listens, he's not a platformer type gamer. So.
00:01:46
Speaker
Just us two gonna talk about basically gush for like an hour about how much we love this game. So ah let's just kick right into it. ah Well, if there's nothing

Astrobot as a Love Letter to PlayStation

00:01:56
Speaker
to talk about story wise really, because it's generic alien stole pieces of a PS5 ship and that's really all it is. all it is and yeah I actually astros I actually really liked how they didn't she worn in like some like crazy story or like there was no like narrator speaking over it telling you oh this is what happened next and then this and then this I like how it was all just it was like playing a classic Lego game where it's like
00:02:21
Speaker
Like there's no voices or anything and it's just kind of just environmental storytelling. I love that. Dude, I have to say a little side note of as you said that I kind of miss when Lego games were just like when they added voice dialogue, I was like, that doesn't that doesn't fit. But um yeah, so the story and we talked about it ah pretty much when we were talking about it and what we're playing before, but it's It's a great love letter to PlayStations, but it doesn't feel too corporatized where it's just like a brand. like Look at our brand. It's kind of on the verge of it because you're literally just in PlayStation stuff everywhere. but
00:02:59
Speaker
With the amount of attention to detail and like all of the IP that have been on PlayStation throughout the generations, it's just such a great love letter. Like, oh my gosh, I can't believe this bot's in this game, from this obscure PlayStation 1 game from back in the 90s that no one played. And I just really love that about it. um Yeah, I don't know what else to say about that part before we move on into gameplay. But ah yeah, just it's just a great little love letter. So

Gameplay Mechanics and DualSense Features

00:03:24
Speaker
let's just hop right into the gameplay aspect. We've talked about it before, how it's one of the best feeling platformers like ever made. It is on par with anything Nintendo has ever like,
00:03:35
Speaker
Mario Odyssey is the last platform where I can really think of where I was like, this gameplay is so smooth and so good. And I think Astrobot, honestly, it's my opinion, but I think it might have done it better because I love the little glide and everything. It just adds these little other aspects to it that are that just add to it. And so I think it might be one of my favorites of all. Obviously, Spyro is my favorite platform. But in terms of like quality, I think Astrobot might be there at the top. I'm not I'm not sure. What do you think?
00:04:04
Speaker
Yeah I know, definitely the quality is outstanding. this Like I had said it earlier when we were on a regular episode, but this screams like a Nintendo game to me. It is super polished. um You can tell that they really put so much effort into just nailing down the controls. It feels so good to play. ah What they did with the DualSense 2 was awesome. How it you know the triggers vibrate when you um Especially at the point when you have to go across the green, there's all the green highlights and you have to go across it and you can feel it vibrate and you have to push it in. Or you have to jump up and use your jetpack to crack it. They did such a good job. Team Asobi has such an understanding of the DualSense controller. They do it like no one else. It's great.
00:04:47
Speaker
um Even just like running around the different environments, I noticed that depending on the um like the terrain that you're on, so like um or like what you're walking on, the footsteps sound changes. So if you're walking on sand, it sounds different than if you're walking on like a concrete.
00:05:05
Speaker
Like just that little attention to detail is so cool. um They did such a good job with it. And gameplay wise, I like it was fantastic just running around. I think it was a great job not giving us like a life counter. I loved how it was like one hit and you're dead.
00:05:20
Speaker
That's just how it is because they were there was so many checkpoints that it's like it's all right All right, if you die you die like you're you're gonna come right back into it. I Love the idea of collecting the coins and that you don't lose coins when you get hit. This

Unique Power-Ups and Gameplay Variety

00:05:32
Speaker
isn't sonic. There's no live So it's like not a hundred coins for lives. I just love that whole Idea, um I love the enemy variety too was awesome. There's so many different ways to kill certain enemies They did such a good job with it Yeah, I mean, really quickly diving back into that, the controller thing. I know we've talked about it a hundred times, but this is like the only PlayStation game that really utilizes the dual sense. Like every there's, you know, like Horizon, it uses the the trigger pulled back slowly when you're using the bow or like Call of Duty. The trigger feels different depending on what gun you're using.
00:06:06
Speaker
But like you were saying, when you're walking on like sand versus glass, like glass, you hear the tank, like the the little thing coming from the controller and sand. It's a little crunchier, but you can also feel that difference in the controller, which it's one of those things where it's like you have to it's like VR. You have to experience it to really understand what people are talking about when they say like it's.
00:06:26
Speaker
like you you have to feel it you just have to actually feel that and i think it's a shame because i remember when they announced the ps5 in the dual sense i was like oh that's going to be a great feature that no one utilizes and i was kind of right like obviously people do utilize a little bit but astrobot the original uh astrobot was a playroom i believe is what it was called one yeah with playros far yeah Yeah, it it felt like a tech demo, but it it was the same as this where it had the love and care of like, this is our PlayStation history. So it was great in that way, but it really felt more like a tech demo, whereas this one, it felt like a platform or where they utilized what was happening in the tech demo.
00:07:03
Speaker
And I really love that about this game. It just it feels so good. And then as you were talking about with just all the little like the gameplay mechanics of if you break the glass, it really just sounds like you're crunching the glass open. And yeah or like when you're gliding over the glass that falls through, if you stand on it and you just see it kind of crumble beneath your laser or beneath your feet when you're walking on, it's all It's just such an amazing attention to detail walking through tall grass. You feel it kind of brush past you ah via the control. It's it's so cool. I love it. Yeah. And then even like ah you can move the controller around on screen once it's the ship or whatever and you're kind of flying it using the gyro or whatever. It's just it uses the controllers in in a way that like I wish Xbox and Nintendo obviously Nintendo with the switch. You have the switch controllers and you can do that. now Even that as the haptic view because what was it called like one two three switch or whatever one to switch? They have the oh, what do they call it? They called it the something it was like something vibration Yeah, it was like it was some weird thing. I don't know. I was sorry I just remember cuz they I remember that I never played it but they demoed it where I was like you you were pretending to like hold like a little like basically like an M&M minis kind of thing and it was there were balls in it and you'd have to feel the switch controller to feel how many balls were like in it because the
00:08:17
Speaker
Vibration was that good. And so I love that the DualSense does that. And it's kind of something I wish Xbox would do. I mean, I know they sent out, ah they sent out like a survey a while ago, like, would you like 3D haptics in our controllers? And everyone's like, yes, please. Even though the battery in DualSense is not good, which sucks, but.
00:08:34
Speaker
But just for this game, I also bought the the Astrobot dual sense. I should have brought it down, but because it was just such a cute thing. I love Astrobot is probably like the best mascot PlayStation has had since like PS one when it was Crash and Spyro and stuff like. Yeah, I see PlayStation three with Uncharted and God of War and all. Like it was all great, but I just feel like this is like the family friendly like the mascot platformer. Yeah, it's a perfect mask. Yeah. and And it's just such a great throwback to that. I love.
00:09:02
Speaker
All of that about obviously I'm a huge and ni into nostalgia. I mean, I got, you know, all this crap. I'm a Pokemon address and stuff. So in Kingdom Hearts. And so obviously I'm a nostalgic kind of person. But yeah, I love that about it. And yeah, I mean, moving on with the the gameplay, we can talk about the powers. So there was the dog, which made you a rocket, which shot you forward. The octopus, which turned you into a balloon. You got to float up ah the iron suit. You turn into the ball to roll around, which that's another one that felt awesome on the dual set. Yeah. Oh, my gosh.
00:09:31
Speaker
That like when you may originally give you that power up in that first level and there's a section where the um things are crashing down on you and they design it so of the last one always crashes down on you no matter what just so you can feel what it feels like and it's just like it vibrates the controller feels like it gets heavier.
00:09:48
Speaker
And then it just like and then it just scoots up and then even Wow with one of the enemies to kill one of the enemies you have to let it eat you in the ball and then you release the triggers and you Explode and the thing explodes and the controller just feels like it feels like it like changes weight. It's such a good. It's so awesome yeah Yeah, that one's amazing. And then there's the elephant, which sucks up the liquid, which you can spray to create platforms and all that kind of stuff. ah The frog gloves, which is this kind of extend punch its arms on Nintendo Switch. um And then they have the monkey, which does the ground pound, which felt cool. The mouse, which turned small and the sponge, which turned huge. Those are two that I wish they had more levels because I'm pretty sure weren't either each of them just on one level.
00:10:28
Speaker
The shrinking was only on the one level could get stuck in the cage right at first and then the munch was the one level that was like a. Kind of like a tokyo not like yeah I had some type of like Japanese centric level where there's like fire everywhere remind me of move on to be honest. oh yeah Yeah, I was thinking go Tsushima, but yeah, but just China. But I know I know Mulan's China. I know I'm going to kill for that. But I know Mulan's a great movie, though. um But yeah, those are the two that I wish were used way more, but it was only on one level each because the sponge was honestly my favorite one, just walking in the water, getting all fat and huge. And then you just go and spray stuff with it. And I loved that one.
00:11:03
Speaker
And then lastly, but not leastly, was the the time stop one where it kind of slowed the like you'd have to slow the knives that the ghosts were thrown so you go past them. So of those was at nine powers. I mean, and we kind of briefly talk about what what do you think is your favorite of those? that So the time stop is my favorite one. And um just like you, I wish they did ah more with the time stop. I believe that was only in one level as well. It was in the casino level, um which is funny because I love that. That's like one of my favorite levels in general, the casino level. Ah, funny. The gambler loves the casino level. I love it. No, but I love like the time power up stopping. It reminded me of Crash Bandicoot 4, where one of the masks power up that you get in Crash 4 is like a time stop one. And I think Sackboy Jesus. I think Astrobot did it better than Crash, where um they utilized it a lot more and it made a lot more sense, for example. um
00:11:59
Speaker
like they had at the beginning of the level when you first get the time the the time stop power they have the the dice and if you step on one of the like the two giant dice floating in the water and if you step on one it like it falls but you have to use the time stop to get to jump on one and to jump on the other one and then get up and get you know you can get coins or there's one astro there's one bot looking up there but i think that's a great what they did with that was awesome i loved the whole like slot machine how it was going so fast you have to stop it Stop of the time to try to get like the um jackpot. and There was even a trophy to get the jackpot and all for the. um
00:12:33
Speaker
slots, which was really cool. I love the whole jumping on the darts thing where they throw in the darts, you have to stop it and you have to jump and then jump on the other side. There's even like the card enemy where they throw the cards at you and you have to climb the cards just to kill the enemy. I think they did a great job with that power up. That was definitely my favorite power up. Yeah. Or the or I don't know if you mentioned it when you kind of going up a slot machine that had like a it wasn't the one where you stop it, but it had like the coins falling from it. And you know, yeah, that yeah, coins on a point. Yeah. Yeah.
00:13:03
Speaker
yeah That was awesome. Yeah, it was so cool. it like And then because at the end of the game, they kind of did the boss rush kind of thing of you get all each the powers to get to the end, but they skipped like half of them like they had the monkey fist again, the dog rocket, which you used so many times in that game.
00:13:18
Speaker
And like all that kind of stuff. But they didn't give you some of them. And I i was kind of bummed out about that. But ah I mean, hopefully, I mean, Astrobot is obviously this. I think they just announced it sold 1.5 million, I believe. Yeah, like 1.5 million in in two months, which is that's extremely profitable because this game did not cost that much money to make.
00:13:36
Speaker
Yeah, definitely. Yeah. And so I'm happy because that definitely means we're going to get more Astro. So hopefully some of these powers do make a return because I would love to do more sponge and more more mouse and all like all these powers because they're so fun. And I'm just I am curious. We can talk about that at the end of what we think the future of the of the franchise is. But for now, um unless you have anything else to say about the powers, we can move on to.
00:14:00
Speaker
So what was your favorite? Was the sponge of her power? I think so. Yeah, the sponge. yeah It's really close between this. I think the sponge is my favorite, but I think the mouse is a close second because I did love the because it was one of those maps where it's like because on a normal map, you can see like, oh, there's that little trail off to the side. I can go to find something. But in that one, you'd have to shrink down in certain areas and you just find this little nook that if you were big, you would never or see that you have to go down there. So I loved that aspect of it because It's it reminded me kind of of the Alice in Wonderland level of Kingdom Hearts, where you're going around the force and you have to shrink yourself to move the rocks or make yourself bigger to move a boulder and like all that

PlayStation Cameos and Nostalgia

00:14:42
Speaker
kind of stuff. And it kind of reminded me of that, obviously way more expansive than that level, obviously. But yeah, I really I really liked the shrinking and changing of sizes because I've always loved that. It's kind of like the like in Titanfall, there's the
00:14:57
Speaker
the dimension shifting level. And so it kind of reminds me of that in a sense where it's almost two dimensions where you're the big dimension, the little dimension, and they're completely different based on what you need to do at that point in the level. And so I love that.
00:15:12
Speaker
In that level, it was so cool. there was There was points where you have to shrink yourself and you go under a blanket and then you make yourself big and the blanket would go flying. And that's how you actually rescue you a bot that way. I don't know which bot it is, but that was just like stuff like that is so cool. And just discovering things as small.
00:15:27
Speaker
um It's it was so and all and then when you're tiny if you jump in like ah like a fan that's so putting a current of air going up you float up like stuff like that is just such a cool design such a smart design by team so be I love it yeah and you walk across the clothes lines and you hit the ends and the clothes fall off you can hear it yep yeah it was like yeah yeah I love it that's Yeah, the the the powers, because in the original Astrobot, it was basically you just kind of got in something like there was the there was the ball you get in. I remember there was the monkey suit where you climb up the walls. You have to like rotate the controller so the arms reach up as you go up. And it it didn't. I feel like this definitely improved on that because really the only part of those powers where you got inside of a thing was
00:16:15
Speaker
You would feel the zipper, which felt really good when you you'd have to go on the touch pad and zip it up and you could feel it zip on your controller. And but yeah, I think the powers I think they definitely improved in this game compared to Playroom. I mean, obviously, Playroom was also a much shorter game. But yeah, I think they definitely were cooking with these new powers that are really cool. But um Moving on, we could talk about all the wonderful bots that we rescue from all the different PlayStation IPS. I just figured quickly we could just kind of talk about the three favorite ones that we may have rescued throughout the game. um I'll start with one of mine, because it's going to be the obvious one. Everyone knows I'm going to say is Spyro, because even though I was a little disappointed that he just doesn't look like an astrobot, everyone else looks like a bot. Yeah, he looks he looks exactly like like ah he looks like that. Yeah.
00:17:07
Speaker
Like a he kind of looks at the Ignited Trilogy Spyro, like the animation. Yeah, it was it was that. But if you were made of like Duplos, kind of, it was it's kind of like, yes, it was like a Duplo Spyro. And so I liked it. But obviously it wasn't really a bot, whereas like Crash Bandicoot. I don't want to steal one if that's what you're going to say. But oh that was my nus that was the one I was going to bring up. Yeah, Crash Bandicoot.
00:17:30
Speaker
Yeah, it's a crash bandicoot. He looks he's looks like crash, but he kind of looks like a bot put on a crash helmet kind of thing. like Yeah. Well, even if you um you know how you can interact with all of them at the crash site, you can like do stuff with them. If you go to him and hit him, his like that the hat that the crash hat like head thing comes off and you see the Astro bot underneath it and then it lands back on him, which is pretty funny. So it is it's just like a giant crash suit. And I think that's like a throwback to like the 90s commercials.
00:17:58
Speaker
I was going to say, I feel like that's exactly what it is. It's a man in a costume but from the 90s crash commercials. That's that's hysterical. I didn't check out all of them. The other one I did check out was because I was up there just kind of messing around before we start recording. And the Jin Sakai, he's sitting in the in the like the springs like, you know, and the hot springs. Yeah. And then if you go up and hit him, he just throws on his arm and he holds it sort of like.
00:18:23
Speaker
What's going on, like kind of thing. And I love the ah those interactions. ah And then ah the third one that I really like just because it wasn't really a PlayStation IP, but it dropped on PlayStation first was the fall guys one, because it's just a beam, the the little beam from fall guys, except his face is the black with the blue eyes instead of white with black eyes. And it's just running around on one of those little platforms from the game.
00:18:45
Speaker
And I just I just love the like we said before, I love the attention to detail of just putting in the time for all of these. Like there were so many I got where i was like, I have no idea what that game is, but it but it but the character looks cool. And so, you know, there's the people out there like our buddy Radak, who's probably out there knowing who it every single one is because he's got such an encyclopedic knowledge of PlayStation.
00:19:09
Speaker
So what other ones were you loving to find or just like what surprised you that you found when you're like, I was shocked. So there's this game that came out in Japan and Europe, but not in North America until they were listed on the PS3 store called Vib Ribbon. And it was like a rhythm based game. It was like ah it's like a black and white ribbon based rhythm based game with like ah a rabbit mascot. And when I saw that, I like freaked out because when my dad went to Japan in the early 2000s. He brought some imported games home with him and he brought this vid bourbon game because he knew about it that it never came out here and my sister was huge my sister loves rhythm games so he bought he brought home that and we played it and I was like oh my gosh and then like I just didn't completely like left it out of my mind like I hadn't probably played it in probably 20 maybe 20 years probably since 04
00:20:01
Speaker
I saw that instantly was like oh my god that's vibrating I cannot like that is such an obscure random ps1 game like why is that here. That's that's amazing I know I cuz I do I do I know exactly which one you're talking about because on the island is just a little black and white background is kinda running along the side of it yeah and dancing all the time yeah yeah. I saw that. Yeah, that's one of those where I saw it and I'm like, I have no idea what this is, but I'm sure someone's love, love and seeing this thing. I loved it. Yeah. Yeah. um
00:20:34
Speaker
Yeah, some other ones I really liked, like, um, try McDool from Suikoden. He's in there. I really like that because the description of it, when you see this, he has a whopping 107 friends. So like Suikoden is all about like, you know, recruiting this giant party and just like the little details they did with the descriptions, like they don't tell you what they are. It's kind of like, you kind of have to know where it's like implied. I like, I was shocked they included some of them. I was really shocked. Like that Suikoden one, I was pretty, pretty shocked they were doing that. Um,
00:21:04
Speaker
Just some of them are like crazy. Like some of them I didn't know. were Were there some of them that you didn't know? Yeah. I mean, like you said, though, what was it? Lib, Lib ribbon or whatever? I didn't know that. Rib, rib, bin, Bin ribbon. Uh, yeah, that one there was, um, Oh my gosh, it was like a, he's like a flow. He's like a pixelated floating purple, like skull. Oh yeah. That one. I had no idea what that is either.
00:21:28
Speaker
Yeah, I don't I don't know. So someone's going to have to comment on this and let us know because I genuinely have no idea what that is. Because looking at it, it made me think of like Tron, but Tron would have been like the era of any. Yes. So I'm like, that's not a PS one or like thing. So because that was my first thought was it was like an old school eight bit game. But I was like,
00:21:49
Speaker
playstation was never 8-bit so i don't know it had to have been a playstation 1 game because obviously it's probably yeah or looked to be boxy and pixelated so it's got to be something like that or it could have been or it could have been one of those remember on the psp go and the psp go came out there those psp mini games oh yeah yeah put i wouldn't be surprised because if you remember like the ode the astrobot playroom they when you find the like the old hardware stuff. There was always these hardware things like, you know, PlayStation, I or whatever. Like I was always something that like I had never heard of. I was like, Oh, they released that. But then obviously they'd also also be the ones where you're like, Oh my God, I remember that one. But yeah, so I love I do love that they take these deep cuts in like, because even in like I said, astronaut, they have the PSP, they have the PSP go and the the veto because it's like,
00:22:37
Speaker
Even though they've been lost to history at this point, they still honor everything from the thing. Like if you were were to play Astrobot and it was only God of War and only Uncharted and like it would be kind of like, yeah, we know those are the big ones. So to have the deep dives for the the fans is such a cool little thing. And

Costumes, Easter Eggs, and Future Updates

00:22:58
Speaker
yeah, it's like it's it's almost like a Like a museum kind of archive in a way of like just looking through the history of PlayStation and just loving every little thing about it. um But yeah, if there's any other bots you want to talk about, we can move on. I just think they did such a good job with just capturing like series. Like when you go to the crash site, like they have the entire like all the uncharted ones are near each other. And then you have like all the God of War ones here. And it's like.
00:23:26
Speaker
they're doing stuff like in the game like there's like a fire going around God of War and and you can tell it's like it's like winter there's like snow on the ground and it's just so cool to me uh the street fighter one there the street fighter characters are fighting each other if you go up to them they just like they got to do a fight with each other yeah it's just like stuff like that the little details and i love how Lara Croft is getting chased by a dinosaur around the east side Yeah, funny I saw the dinosaur chasing because I saw it from a distance. I was like, what do they have a truck in this? I don't remember. But then you go up there. That's Lara Croft running from a dinosaur. It's it's so like, yeah, it's just so cute with all the little thing. And then, oh, the other one is the ah the Okami. I don't remember what the dog's name. I've never played it. I mean, it's always I never. And neither have I. Yeah, it's always what I want to play. But then he's just resting up there, too. And like it's ah like the the island. Some people are interacting with each other. They have all of them next to each other.
00:24:15
Speaker
Well, we'll get to the obviously the PlayStation levels that we Have in the game. But yeah, I do love that. They're all in their little sections just all hanging out with each other and i The island itself also I love the using the but like once you have a certain amount of bot They like build basically a little bridge for you or a little ladder or something so you can get somewhere and so it gives you the incentive of like you need to go back and rescue them you can't just finish the level and move on that's not how it works it's you have to collect it was the same you know i mean it's been a platformer thing forever where you collect a certain amount move on but like ah
00:24:51
Speaker
Sackboy you'd have to have a certain amount of the orbs or whatever to move on to the next level and so I've always enjoyed that about platformers in general not just asher bodice it Incentivizes you to collect like not every like in Spyro. There's if you collect everything you get to the treasure at the end But if you you only need to collect you know half to maybe three quarters of stuff to move on to certain levels and stuff so it's not gonna force you but it rewards you if you do go through it and then i am ps5 it rewards your trophies because i i too have the platinum i got it i think we can came out i played this game religiously when it came out but i saw you got what the plan the platinum yesterday.
00:25:34
Speaker
Yeah, so what happened was I had played the main game and then I was like it was one of those games like I didn't want to end so I didn't want to rush through it so it was one of those things where I'm just like I'm just gonna just randomly like trophy clean up like as I go and I had like two trophies left going into yesterday and it was like the um picture with Lara Croft and Nathan Drake which that wasn't that I don't know some people were saying that was difficult I didn't think it was that difficult to do No it's not difficult it's just annoying yeah and then the other one i had was on you know the one i forget who the ball with the bot's name is but if you hit him he drops like items.
00:26:11
Speaker
Oh, I yeah don't remember which one it is, but I do remember. Yeah, because there's a because I'm pretty sure you also got a trophy for interacting with the Katamari one. He'd like roll you up or something. Yeah. Yeah. really Yeah. I love that they had little because it would be lame if, you know, there are 200 trophies of just interact with each person. So the fact that there was just certain ones.
00:26:30
Speaker
that if you interacted with them, you got a trophy for it was a nice little touch as well. ah But yeah, the the Katamari one, that's another one I like just because it's such a it's such a goofy title. Like it's obviously not as obscure as some of these other ones, but I i was actually playing it because i they added what a game pass the other day and.
00:26:49
Speaker
Like that game controls like crap now, but it it is still funny. It is like a goofy, just a very Japanese game. Very Japanese. I just think it's it's amazing that how much detail they put into each little bot, because like each one has a unique thing where you go up to it and it's like, OK, you get it once you get the item, it's going to do a unique encounter with you. It's going to do something. And it's they did such a good job with that. And like they didn't have to do that, but they did.
00:27:15
Speaker
Yeah, I was also. Yeah, i was when I was messing around, I went up to where all the Resident Evil people are and like yeah clare Claire is sitting behind a door that has a heart on it. And if you knock on it or whatever, she kind of freaks out. And then i ah Leon is next to a zombie and they're next to the statue where you have to put the three things in to open it. And then if you hit it, the statue falls off and they freak out and they go and they grab it and put it back on the pedestal and like, whoo. And then um Oh, my gosh, who was it? The ah the girl who wears blue, what's her name from Resident Evil three of Jill Valentine? Jill. Yes. Yes. Yeah. yeah She's ah behind a door. And if you hit it, the door opens and the zombie dogs come in and she's hiding behind the door. And then the door, the door closes and the dog leave again. It's just I just love the little little animations. And like I said, it's just the it's just the wonderful like
00:28:10
Speaker
just the, the they they put so much love into these characters. And like, they're not just gonna be like, like, here's Dante from Devil May Cry. He's just standing here. Nope, he's shooting something up in the air. Like he's hitting them up at the store and then shooting them because that's how the gameplay goes. And yeah, I just, I love just the attention to detail, but speaking ah of detail, costumes that you get to wear.
00:28:35
Speaker
What one did you wear the most? And then kind of what other ones were you just always kind of flipping on here and there? All right. So this is going to shock some people. But I wore the cow costume almost the entire game. um No idea why. I think it's because it was one of the first costumes I unlocked. So I put it on. And I'm running around as a cow. And I'm like, I love the way it just looks. I'm just like, I'm running around a cow. It reminded me of just like dressing up on Halloween and like the costume where it's like,
00:29:05
Speaker
yeah like your head is here, but like that the head of the cow is like above you. It just reminded me of that. So I ran around as the cow a lot. um i did run and I did jump into the um Ratchet and Clank costume. I did like that because I'm a big Ratchet fan. um But other than that, those are like they really the only two I used. I wish there was a little bit more costume variety. yeah There wasn't that many. like I unlocked them fairly quickly.
00:29:29
Speaker
um yeah What about you? it ah It also kind of stunk because when like obviously I loved it and I'll talk about the ones but like it was it's at times it kind of stunk because like ratchet you just kind of had the ears and like a belt kind of thing but when you put on the bloodborne one you had the full get up so it's like sometimes it transformed you into that character and then sometimes it was like I'm wearing like a Halloween costume kind of difference, like, you know, and it did stink because some of them is like, here's a gold plated one or here's a silver one. And it's just like, I don't want to wear those. Like, I wish there were more PlayStation like centric, like if you could run around as the crash bot or something like that would be really fun. But ah my favorite. Well, the first one I wore for the most time because it was like the first one I unlocked was I wore Jack for a lot of the game. OK.
00:30:17
Speaker
And then um and then I wore a ratchet for a little bit because I had that. But once I got sly, I wore sly until the end of the game because I love Sly Cooper. It's one of my favorite PlayStation two games of all time. And ah at the end, I it was like the last one I got for some reason, and because I know it's the little random selection in the you put the coins and you get the little yeah grab bag thing.
00:30:41
Speaker
the last one i got was the pixelated one like how in mario odyssey where you turn to the n sixty four version of mario i did that but it was like the the cube kind of looking astrobo because you know obviously obviously grown up on playstation one i i There's I know people say like, oh, the pixelated is it it holds up well, which is true. it It looks beautiful. But then people say like PlayStation one and two, they don't hold up. I'm like, I disagree. I think they look great. Like they're they are of their time for sure. But I still think they look good. So I always like wearing those like 16 or not 16 bit like 64 bit or whatever it is, the the QB looking skin. So
00:31:20
Speaker
when I when I flipped on the game, that's the one I was wearing. And so I kept that one on. There was I don't even think there was there like a Kratos. I don't even think there was a Kratos one. No, there was no there was no crate. There was no God of War like costumes.

Themed Levels and Design Appreciation

00:31:33
Speaker
Yeah, it's just it's just weird but that like and that they wouldn't include more skin. like I don't know what that why what their reasoning would be, because, yeah, they have these weird obscure ones that it's like that. OK, that's fine. But then they just only have a couple.
00:31:47
Speaker
PlayStation IP ones, you'd think they'd have more to choose from. But, um, oh, this isn't a costume thing. But one thing I was surprised by, I think they had made some stupid excuse as to why it wasn't, but they didn't have like, uh, they didn't have twisted metal. Any bots like you'd think they'd have a slow twisted metal, no resistance.
00:32:08
Speaker
Yeah, like why? Why? i Because i it's it's one thing to not have it's one thing to not have Spider-Man because Sony doesn't own the rights to Marvel. They just insomniac has the license for their games. So that makes sense. But yeah, why wouldn't they do resistance or anything like that? That's yeah crazy. To me, I i have a feeling.
00:32:29
Speaker
that they're gonna drop, they're gonna update this game just like they did with the Playroom where they sporadically just randomly updated. I think we're gonna get an update next year when that Venom game is announced or whatever is announced. I think we're gonna have a whole Spider-Man planet.
00:32:45
Speaker
where we have a bunch of Spider-Man levels, there's gonna be a new power up, it's a web shooter power up, and you're gonna get a Spider-Man suit. I got a weird feeling about that. I think i think they're gonna sporadically do stuff like that. Now, I think, you know what this this might mean? The revival of the Resistance series. They're gonna bring it back. They're gonna tease us with their Resistance side DLC drop in Astrobot. That's ah handsome some that's a big wishin' right there.
00:33:10
Speaker
But that actually makes sense if they did add more planets like that, because they could do it. They could do a twist of metal planet where you're driving around in a little car and run. Yeah, that would be so cool. Yeah, that'd be fun as hell. Like I wouldn't that would be something smart that they could do. But I don't think because I think they're I could be wrong, but I think their excuse for twist of metal was it's a family friendly game and they didn't want something like that. I'm like, you have a lot of emirated games last lesson there. Yeah. I'm like, I'm like, if that is their excuse that I can't remember if that was it or not, but I'm like, that's your excuse. That's a terrible excuse because, yeah, there's much more violent games than Twisted Metal in that, including the game Resident in Evil, twit Devil May Cry, Last of Us. Those are all much more violent and less child friendly than Twisted Metal is.
00:33:55
Speaker
oh But yeah, ah let's, speaking of PlayStation, i let's talk about the five PlayStation levels that you got at the end of each a galaxy. So the Gorilla Nebula, which is the first one, had Apiscape. And then we had the Tentacle System with God of War, Serpent Star away with Uncharted, Camo Cosmos had Loco Roco, and the Feather Cluster had the Horizon World. Which one was your favorite?
00:34:22
Speaker
I love the Uncharted one. I thought that one was the best one. I loved running around in the Nathan Drake little outfit with a gun. And you just you just shoot random things. I thought it felt like a level out of Uncharted. It felt like a LEGO Uncharted game, um which was really cool. um And I felt like I was just thrown right into, like oh, you're Nathan Drake. You're running around. you yeah You're doing these crazy things. And these enemies are coming out of nowhere. And you've got to solve these puzzles. They even have um a section where you have to like push the, um But you just solve like a like ah an uncharted puzzle. We have to push the like pillars back to make something open, which is kind of cool. um I really like that. um My second favorite one, I actually really like the God of War one, too. I thought they did a really good job with the axe throwing yeah where it's it's just like you're playing God of War 2018 or God of War Ragnarok, where you can freeze things. And they had the Odin's Ravens flying around and you got to find all eight of them. Yeah. Was it in a trophy to him? Oh, it was. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. all eight Yeah.
00:35:19
Speaker
Yeah, I was uncharted is my favorite one, definitely. But I was shocked that they had a local Rocco level because that is such an obscure game. I loved it. I had it on PSP back in the day. It is such an obscure choice that when I did it, I was like, there's no way they're doing an entire level dedicated to Loco Rocco of all freaking games.
00:35:41
Speaker
Like they could have done any of their IPs, but they had, you know, three that were huge. Ape Escape isn't as big anymore, obviously. But that that was a fun level going around just catching the monkeys. But ah but, yeah, having a local local level, I was it was one of those where I mean, most of this game, I had a big stupid shitting in green on my face the entire time because I was loving it every moment. But local rock was just sitting there like i can't believe not doing this right now like they did this they they included this game of all game and the costume and that was like completely changed how you play the game cuz I'm just rolling around yeah you're just roll around as you as a big head and you I I was expecting the four I was not expecting local record I was expecting ghost of humor
00:36:24
Speaker
Mm hmm. Me too. I was expecting, yeah, ghosts of Tsushima or just really are like, I would have would have been surprised if there was even like a Resident Evil level. I mean, because they could have like a it could have been like a spoopy level in a way. But yeah, ah yeah, I was very surprised. That's the that's the IP they went with.
00:36:44
Speaker
But um yeah, the God of War, I loved it. Ape Escape was fun. And then the horizon level was also a lot of fun, even though I'm not. Obviously, you're a much bigger fan of it than me. I like it, obviously, but and ah like collecting all the little characters and just having like ah I was surprised that one of them was like the robot ah like one of the bots was a robot like ah the velociraptor looking one. I was like, that's yeah, and that's odd because then they had the big, you know, the the big walker tall on the plane and everything.
00:37:14
Speaker
Yeah it's all back yeah which is really fun scamming that it that's right out of horizon we are yet to do that many times. um That was cool i like how if you were running around now that they had as if you were like had to focus on where you could see like. The like holograms of like what's supposed to take place in the past and one of them actually leads to a bot which is pretty cool it's like if you see it running and you're like how do i get in there and you have to like figure it out.
00:37:39
Speaker
That was pretty cool. ah The boss fight though in the Horizon level is the best boss fight of the five PlayStation ones where you're um riding on a turtle and you have to like shoot like the robot dinosaur. Oh, yeah. And they had the weak spots. It's like you're chipping off just like in the real um Horizon game where you're chipping off armor and it reveals like the weak spots. so You have to hit that a couple of times. That was really cool. I like that.
00:38:03
Speaker
Yeah, I forgot about that. Yeah, that those was so much fun, because really with those levels, I was mostly thinking to just about it's one of those where you just kind of take in the world as you slowly move through. ah I'm the kind of gamer who I hit every nook and cranny I hate. Like it always sucks in those games where it's kind of a fork in the road and you're like, I want to go to the exploring one before I go to the story one. And if you accidentally go to the story when you're like crap and then you hit the checkpoint, you you have to go back to it later.
00:38:30
Speaker
So I really like I'm always that kind of person So that's kind of what I think of with those levels is I'm just going around being like they did this they did this they added this it's and so But like you're saying how in the game you chip off the arm I love that those little attention to details where it's like I any quirk that someone made a meme of online or something, they're going to add it to it. Like, yep, we understand that gameplay ah thing. It's kind of weird, kind of goofy. So here's a little ah little joke about it. And um yeah, all those those levels were insane. I don't know if there are any other just normal levels that kind of stuck out to you, other than ah including like the powers we talked about.
00:39:08
Speaker
Well, the casino level, I love that a lot. That was really cool. Each individual level, they did such they had such an intention to detail with them. like Even the one where you're you know what the um giant robot is like trapped down, he's like he's on the beach, he's like he's almost like a stranded whale. Like how it's like dark and gloomy and it's raining. And then the second you rescue him, the sun comes out and it just like changes the environment completely. That was so cool. That level was really cool. I thought the underwater level, we would get you know like the penguin power up,
00:39:36
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That one I really like, too, where it's like a giant like you're in like almost like a giant open world, like swimming area to like rescue the octopus that's um tied down. I really like that level.

Survival Challenges and Player Satisfaction

00:39:49
Speaker
um Some of the small levels were really cool, too, like the the re the retro, rump the re retro rampage levels, where it's like it's like Minecraft, basically graphics. And he was trying to fight everything. Yeah.
00:40:01
Speaker
I love those ones. Yeah, I love those ones because it it felt like it was almost made. Like, I don't know if you ever seen that movie, Pixels. ah yeah i I've only seen. I haven't seen it, but but I know what. Yeah. Yeah. But like in the trailer, like they destroyed Pac-Man or whatever, and it just crumbles into like bricks kind of thing. And that's what that level felt like. You just kind of chunk away and.
00:40:20
Speaker
the Obviously, the computing power of the PS5 is so good that it would you every little piece would fall apart. like it wouldn't be like an ant like It wouldn't be just some normal animation. like the The physics in the game are so good that it would crumble kind of realistically. And I really loved that. Yeah, those levels were fun. um Let's talk, oh, but we can talk about the not fun levels of doing those survival obstacle course levels. of Each one was those had the square ones, X, the crawler. cross, yeah across whatever. Yeah. Circle and triangle levels. Those were the bane of my existence during this game. that's Funny. See, the only one that gave me trouble was the final, final one where it's like that when you're when you're getting the last spot where, um you know, the and there was only one section that gave me trouble. It was a section where, you know, when they're firing like the the birds at you and it's like the X, the circle, that's the only part that gave me trouble. And it took me like five times and then I was fine.
00:41:15
Speaker
Oh, then you're better than me at those games because I'm a pro gamer. Yeah, I didn't struggle on the smaller ones as much. There were a couple I did get stuck on for, you know, half hour or something like that, where it's just kind of resetting it. But yeah, that final one. And it's and it sucks because like, you know, the pattern by the time, but you just make a yeah dumb little mistake. yeahp But yeah, the birds at the end were definitely the it was, I think,
00:41:39
Speaker
the square one because you had to jump through it. You couldn't go around it like yeah and the last the the square one was the last one. It was just it was constantly shoot out you and there was only one path you could go. You had to jump through it. Yeah. Yeah. And there would be times where you either jump too high or you jump too low and you're like, oh, more like you're not you're close to the end, but you're not so close where it stops shooting. And you're like, do I jump now?
00:42:02
Speaker
Yeah, that was the yeah, you have to because if you have the time down of when you know to jump, there's that last one where you're like, do I do I have to jump or am I good? And sometimes you're good. Sometimes you weren't. Yeah. like Oh, my God. Why? Why is it doing this to me? But yeah, I mean, I didn't really have any other topics to that written down and talk about, I guess, just really, we could do overall, obviously, impressions we've gone over, we kind of summarize our thoughts. And then what do you think will be the future of Astro Bot on PlayStation. yeah um like Overall, like this game was phenomenal. Definitely a top five game for me this year. um yeah Definitely the best platformer I played this year. I'm like so happy that this came out and it was like such a surprise when they announced it and now it's like, oh my gosh, like I just want more and more.
00:42:51
Speaker
As for the future, I think like I had said, I think we're going to sporadically get DLC for this just like thrown in. And I think it's going to be free deals. I don't think they're going to pay charge for it. I really don't. I think they're just going to say, hey, here's a Spider-Man world. Hey, here's a hey, we have a new um Twisted Metal TV series coming out. Here's a Twisted Metal level or here's a Twisted Metal bot you can go rescue.

Future of Astrobot and DLC Possibilities

00:43:11
Speaker
I mean, they even had the speed run levels coming out right now and they've released almost all of them. And so far they're great. I i've really like them.
00:43:18
Speaker
um That's what I think's gonna happen. I my dream would be to get some Square Enix love in there. Let's get a Square Enix Oh, yeah, that was the other one. They didn't have yeah, they didn't have any square How how awesome it would be to run around it's like a heartless costume like I get all so see that as a shadow heartless just running around Dude, imagine just a level like a Final Fantasy level or yeah, if they but for Kingdom Hearts, they'd have to really get Disney on board with that one because I mean, I guess you could be Sora and ra ah Riku and Roxas. So like that I was thinking it'd be it'd be along the lines of like how they got Sora into Smash where there's no Disney references at all. It's just like just Sora. Yeah, though but I think it'd be I think it'd be so cool if they could get Kingdom Hearts in their Final Fantasy, some more obscure like I
00:44:03
Speaker
Guaranteed, given that team is always a Japanese company, Dryden Quest will definitely be in there because that's so big in Japan. yeah um I would love that. I'm just trying to think back to like the games I loved back in the day. Like if they had like a time splitters little like that wasn't exclusive. But like I've I think time splitters when I think of PlayStation 2 or a time crisis. Time railgun game. That was those were all on PlayStation. I i forgot about that. I always just see them at arcades.
00:44:32
Speaker
um Yeah, I'm just trying to think of other ones they could bring in. Even on PlayStation 1, there was this Frogger game. Or you could do Croc. So I was surprised they didn't have Croc, given that it was announced for a remaster that's coming out, or a remake that's coming out. I think next month. Yeah, I think next month it's coming. I'm going to get it, because I think it's 30 bucks. I probably will, too. So yeah, I'm definitely going to play that.
00:44:58
Speaker
um Yeah for the for the future, and I agree that they're definitely gonna have more DLC because when you look at the galaxy it has the six because it's the five levels and then like the the black hole and then above there's the alien and then off to the side is where the ah The time one is so there's space off to the other side where I know there's probably going to be something right there. And it would be cool if it was just more because I feel like they're just going to do more like survival obstacle course stuff for this. But if they do add more actual levels where you can rescue more bots from other place nation IPS.
00:45:34
Speaker
I would love it. It'd be cool if they made just an entire galaxy that was Square Enix and each level was just a final. format like that So yeah that'd be I didn't have it. Yeah, that would be in because because they have, you know, 15 final fantasy games to pull from. So they can easily have all these levels, because I mean, obviously because you can't just do a final fantasy level where it's like, oh, your cloud, you have squall and you have Titus like It has to be like you have to have one that you could have cloud Barrett Tifa. Like you you can't you can't just do like cloud and Aerith. I'd like it ah and I have like an eight bit old style one for like found fantasy one. We run around. It's like a warrior thief, black mage, white mage just running around. Yeah, I mean, because with those retro levels, there's definitely room for where they could definitely play more with the old school. Like they could even make it look because in the playroom, that final boss of the T-Rex, which is both for that game, came out four years ago. um And that one is PS5 has it. So you have no excuse. But anyway. ah
00:46:39
Speaker
Like it when it came out, it was in the PlayStation one graphics. Like it was that that old school look. And so they could easily do more stuff like that. And it would be so fun. But in terms of like future installments, that's what I'm I don't know what they can do, because Astra is obviously a great PlayStation mascot now. He's the going to be the face of PlayStation now, which makes sense. He's an adorable little character. And, you know, it's it's just fantastic in that sense. But um I'm because you can't really just keep doing games of like, remember this PlayStation thing, remember this PlayStation thing. So it's like they have to do something with Astro after this. And I just I wonder what they're going to do for that.

Astrobot's Legacy and Closing Thoughts

00:47:24
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, I know like the VR game had no ties to PlayStation, former like PlayStation, like former IP or anything that was just a pure Astro Bot game. Yeah. So I could easily see them just doing like a platforming Astro Bot game. But who knows? I mean, they could they might they might do anything like.
00:47:39
Speaker
Like, you know, what yeah, yeah, because I I'm it sucks. I never got to play Rescue Mission. I played the demo when I had a PSVR, but I get motion sickness. And basically, I know you said you've never done VR. um Basically, you're just looking down on the world. You're kind of just an overhead look and you control the astrobot. And as it moves down the down the level,
00:48:04
Speaker
You the camera just moves with it. Like you just glide along with it. And that that motion is enough for me to get sick. And so it sucks. I never got to play. I played the demo for a while, but I eventually just had to quit because I was getting motion sickness. And but so it does. Yeah, you're definitely right. They could easily just do. It's just Astro Bot without PlayStation. It's just I feel like they've almost dug themselves into a hole by doing two games in a row that were like the history of PlayStation.
00:48:31
Speaker
that if they just go off and do just as just yeah, if they go off and just do this as Astro Bot, then everyone's gonna be like, well, I want, you know, Crash Bandicoot again, where's Crash Bandicoot? Like, and so I feel like they're kind of but they could even just do something as simple as it's a sequel to this game. And the Astro Bots you did rescue, you can have them be like little partners of you going off into normal worlds. Like you could be on a normal Astro Bot.
00:48:55
Speaker
planet that's not PS based, but, you know, have Crash and Leon Kennedy running with you for whatever reason, like they could they could they could easily do that as well. So I'm i'm very curious as to see what they do in the future for this this IP.
00:49:10
Speaker
Yeah, even if they only just like included skins that were like PlayStation centric, but like this is unique to Astrobot, I could see that, too. Yeah, because yeah, they definitely don't need every game to be like, oh, we're on an uncharted world again. But yeah, if they just basically have them as little Easter eggs in the game rather than the focus of the game, I think that's how they'll get away with it. And yeah.
00:49:32
Speaker
But so yeah, I'm excited for the future of Astrobot. I'm happy that PlayStation app has a mascot again. Because before, you know ah PlayStation 4 is one of the greatest consoles of all time. And having those commercials where it's basically just like greatness awaits. And it's just some weird epic trailer. And they sometimes they show a character from a game. It's just like it never felt the same as back in the like PlayStation 1 mascot days. Because that was obviously one of PlayStation versus Nintendo. And so it was kind of a mascot off. and Yeah, I enjoy that. Basically, he's going to be, you know, rabbits are annoying. He's going to be like the rabbits of PlayStation where, you know, rabbits are Ubisoft. And so I'm happy that.
00:50:14
Speaker
We're going to see more of Astro, definitely, because and and and the fact that this game is universally loved, like, what what is that, have like a 92 or something on something like that? I've not heard and I've not heard like one person be like, Oh, I hate this game. This game is awful. Because, yeah, the only people who don't like Ashwater, people who wouldn't like platformers. But even though I don't understand how anyone doesn't like platformers midnight,
00:50:36
Speaker
um But yeah, so I'm this I am so excited for the future of Astro Bot and um Yeah, unless you have any other final thoughts we can wrap it up nice short episode for everyone where we just talk about a game that everyone should be playing and No, that's that's it. I mean, I am so excited for the future of this. i I can't wait till they release that last speed run level because I'll be diving back in. This is a game I will not delete off my PS console. I just have fun game to just jump in and just play. Yeah, I finally I did remove play room from my thing once this game came out, because I actually I've always had play room on my PS five since I got my PS five, mostly because if I had if any friend of mine had never played a PlayStation five before,

Because most of my friends are Xbox gamers, actually, which is why I still am in that Xbox Xbox Xbox. Yeah, I'm an Xbox. um So I would just straight up be like, I'd load up Ash bottom. I play this like just you need to feel this controller. And so that's pretty much why I had it. And then obviously I played it to get those bots because I think those bots were only in Astro bot if you got them from play room. Yes. Yep.

Mm hmm. Yeah, because you start off with four already when you get to the game. So it's yeah I think I have like instead of three hundred out of three hundred, you have like three hundred four out of three hundred four. So it was really cool that they did that. But yeah, that's really the last time I went in. And those puzzles were really hard, actually. I had to look up to of them because figuring out what you had to do, like the Gran Turismo one, you had to be on the beach and you had to hit like certain so starfish or something. I'm like, why would anyone know that?

why That is impossible to know that that's what you have to do. But um yeah, so I removed it. But yeah, Astrobot is going to be on there for until the next one at the very least, because it's one of those where even though I'm obviously going to hop in as they add stuff, I am going to try these speed levels eventually. I need to I have other games to play right now before I get into them. But um But yeah, it's going to be one of those where if I have a friend who doesn't have a PlayStation five, I'm like, you have to you have to try this game because you don't understand how like good one good the game is and to how awesome it feels when you're playing it. But yeah.

Yeah, that's Astrobot. If anyone else is if you haven't played it and you listen to this, well, sorry for spoiling all the because the the spoilers of this game isn't the story because the stories, you know, it's very bare bones. But the story that's it's like it's like when you're seeing a Deadpool and Wolverine. It's not really about the story. It's about what's going to show up and you don't want to be experienced. Yeah, exactly. And so if you're listening to this, hopefully you've played it. Don't spoil yourself. This is such a great game and obviously we only talked about a handful of characters that are in it and um so yeah everyone should check out this game if you haven't if you have awesome i hope you're listening and enjoying our podcast so yeah anything else for you final thoughts before we wrap it up
