Introduction and Expectations
00:00:00
Speaker
Buckle up, people.
00:00:02
Speaker
This episode is going to be profound, life-changing, and hilarious.
Host Introduction and Podcast Purpose
00:00:11
Speaker
Welcome to the Expat Brat Podcast.
00:00:13
Speaker
I'm Salman Qureshi.
00:00:18
Speaker
I'm super excited about this episode because it's about ninjas and I grew up on that stuff and I've been enamored by them forever.
00:00:26
Speaker
But first, we're going to be talking about things that have been going on in my life because I really use this show as a journal for my own mental
Health Journey and Personal Wins
00:00:33
Speaker
It's cheaper than therapy.
00:00:35
Speaker
So first of all, I'm going to start with some wins, man.
00:00:40
Speaker
I have been working really hard in the gym.
00:00:44
Speaker
I've been, it's helped that, you know, kind of things have been starting late for me in terms of work.
00:00:53
Speaker
I have time in the morning and I've been hitting the stationary bike a lot and my cardio is up.
00:01:00
Speaker
So it's been it's been feeling I've been feeling really great.
00:01:03
Speaker
And then I lost weight, which is something I've been struggling to do for a while now.
00:01:11
Speaker
It wasn't all just exercise.
00:01:12
Speaker
Of course, it was it was the food you eat and blah, blah, blah.
00:01:16
Speaker
And I recently, you know, over the last few months, I've really cut out processed foods, mostly eating out, especially junk food like that has just made me feel so much better.
00:01:30
Speaker
And now I'm trying to push it a bit more by cutting off food.
00:01:33
Speaker
Some stuff that I'm addicted to mainly, and this is going to shock anyone who knows me, desserts, man.
00:01:39
Speaker
Like that stuff, I just feel like it's part of my life.
00:01:43
Speaker
Like what is life without desserts?
00:01:46
Speaker
And having to think about cutting out sugar and all that stuff, it almost feels like who am I without that?
00:01:56
Speaker
But sugar is my next enemy that I'm going to try cutting off.
00:02:03
Speaker
And I'll keep you posted on how that's going.
00:02:04
Speaker
But overall, I think I've been pretty good.
Social Media Detox and Mental Health
00:02:08
Speaker
And I felt better.
00:02:10
Speaker
So knowing that I lost some weight and a little bit around my waist, it makes me feel a bit proud, you know?
00:02:19
Speaker
Just makes you want to keep going then.
00:02:22
Speaker
So that's one of the things I've been very happy about.
00:02:24
Speaker
It's something I keep talking about.
00:02:26
Speaker
And I really finally just got sick of it.
00:02:30
Speaker
I just saw some pictures of me.
00:02:32
Speaker
from some shows and I was wearing something that shouldn't be unflattering on me but I just it was like my tummy just popping out and I was like I can't I can't I can't do this anymore I can't look at myself I don't want this so so it's been good I've been I've been uh I've made it a big focus and I I've been quite happy with it and
00:02:56
Speaker
I think it's coupled with a few other wins that I've been doing.
00:03:01
Speaker
On Jan 1st, from Jan 1st, I cut out social media.
00:03:06
Speaker
I deleted all my social media apps from my phone.
00:03:10
Speaker
And again, I've talked a little bit about it, but it's been three months now and I haven't felt the need to add them back.
00:03:19
Speaker
I think I've felt really great without them.
00:03:22
Speaker
And listen, just a disclaimer.
00:03:25
Speaker
I'm not on an anti-social media crusade, far be it.
00:03:30
Speaker
I think it really works for some people.
00:03:33
Speaker
It can really help.
00:03:36
Speaker
And I don't judge tools.
00:03:39
Speaker
I think what it was for me as I've been continuing my break from it is I just got to a point where
00:03:46
Speaker
I didn't know why I was using it anymore.
00:03:51
Speaker
And also there were two things.
00:03:52
Speaker
Why and and the the honest and just being honest with myself, I just realized I'm not good at this.
00:04:00
Speaker
I just know good with social media.
00:04:04
Speaker
And back in the day, it was kind of fun and it helped me.
00:04:07
Speaker
And of course, it's been making comics famous and allowing them to break through and stuff.
00:04:13
Speaker
But I just never got good at it.
00:04:15
Speaker
And I look back at it and I go, I tried it.
00:04:18
Speaker
I tried it and I really gave it a go at times.
00:04:23
Speaker
But it wasn't doing much for me, and I didn't like what it was doing to me.
00:04:29
Speaker
So I think I haven't missed it for that reason.
00:04:34
Speaker
If anything, I felt really good without it.
00:04:38
Speaker
And the why also became sharper for me because I was like...
00:04:42
Speaker
When I told myself at the beginning of the year that let me go off and regroup and decide how I want to hit this thing again, the answer isn't there yet for me.
00:04:55
Speaker
And it just became so much more clear to me that...
00:04:59
Speaker
I didn't know why I was using it anymore.
00:05:02
Speaker
If it was to stay in touch with friends, then being off it has actually helped me a lot more because, you know, when you're on it, you kind of you see the stuff they've posted.
00:05:13
Speaker
You kind of like each other's stuff.
00:05:14
Speaker
You'll comment, share a meme in the messages and whatnot.
00:05:18
Speaker
And you feel like you're making an effort.
00:05:21
Speaker
It's like but actually what you're kind of doing is like an easy way to brush it off.
00:05:25
Speaker
And when I wasn't on it, I actually had to make a bigger effort to go, oh, man, I haven't seen or talked to this person in a while, so I better message.
00:05:34
Speaker
I better call them.
00:05:36
Speaker
I better go over and see them.
00:05:38
Speaker
And those things I felt better about, you know, about my relationships.
00:05:43
Speaker
And I guess overall it just made me really do it meaningful with meaning.
00:05:55
Speaker
Make it meaningful.
00:05:56
Speaker
This I don't know what you get it right.
00:05:58
Speaker
I was trying to make it.
00:05:59
Speaker
It just means more to me now.
00:06:01
Speaker
And and so I you know, I just feel so good about it.
00:06:07
Speaker
Again, if it's working for you, if you're good at it and you're making money off it or whatever, I'm sure I'm taking a hit financially in some ways.
00:06:15
Speaker
But most of the work I wanted to do this year,
00:06:18
Speaker
didn't require social media or not from me personally.
00:06:22
Speaker
And so I've been able to escape it for a bit, too.
00:06:27
Speaker
I don't say never say never kind of situation.
00:06:29
Speaker
You know, in the last three months, I've downloaded a couple of the apps to just check in on a message or if I really had to share something.
00:06:39
Speaker
So I've done it maybe once or twice in the last three months that that's it.
00:06:43
Speaker
But I haven't missed it.
00:06:45
Speaker
And that's a funny thing.
00:06:47
Speaker
And I think it's led to some other stuff for me, too, because what ends up happening is you you for me, at least I felt like I'm a news junkie.
00:06:58
Speaker
I'm a junkie for reading stuff online and stuff.
00:07:01
Speaker
But I just got cut off from the news to some extent.
00:07:05
Speaker
I didn't feel the need to read it as much.
00:07:08
Speaker
Like I said, I enjoy it.
00:07:09
Speaker
But at the same time, it just got to the point.
00:07:11
Speaker
Social media kind of makes you go, especially if you're a comic or whatever, that I need to stay up to date with everything going on.
00:07:17
Speaker
You know, have my finger on the pulse, all that kind of stuff.
00:07:20
Speaker
But because I wasn't doing it and I was trying to do standard material that's more relevant to me personally,
00:07:27
Speaker
I didn't feel the need so much to catch up.
00:07:29
Speaker
I watch my shows and everything, but the news, the day-to-day news, it just cut off, and that makes me feel better too overall to not be in the race to find out what's the breaking news and then try to comment or joke about it or whatever.
00:07:44
Speaker
It just kind of fell apart, and that's another thing that I've just felt really good about too.
00:07:49
Speaker
So that, you know, those wins, man, some great wins for me, mental health wise, physically, like I feel good.
00:07:56
Speaker
I'm in a good place in terms of that.
00:07:58
Speaker
So take what you may out of it.
00:08:00
Speaker
But that's what's going on with me.
00:08:03
Speaker
The dumb and failure stuff.
00:08:06
Speaker
Well, look, I said I lost weight.
00:08:14
Speaker
This is after I've been working out all month.
00:08:16
Speaker
So I didn't feel too good about that.
00:08:18
Speaker
um but i think you know i'll take any loss at this point um it's a good it's a good loss and and maybe it's just you know it's the start of a trend so i'm hoping i get better at 0.20 kgs oh i worked so hard for that um the other thing i that was a bit of a fail was i i told you i lost a little around my waist it was a centimeter i lost a centimeter not even an inch a centimeter
00:08:44
Speaker
It's not all bad though, right?
00:08:47
Speaker
Because what I read, I don't know if this is true, but what I read somewhere was that you actually, when you're losing weight, losing your fat, you kind of lose the fat around internal organs, especially your liver, because that's where the fat also surrounds apart from your waist and everything.
00:09:06
Speaker
So when you first start losing weight, the body attacks that fat first, which you can't see.
00:09:11
Speaker
And so the waste takes longer, the superficial stuff, if you may, not really, but, you know, so that stuff takes more time to lose.
00:09:21
Speaker
So I think, you know, it's a good sign if I've lost anything around my waist, I probably have lost some around my liver and stuff.
00:09:28
Speaker
Again, if it's all true, if it's correct, medical information, then just means I'm healthier and less likely to die of a heart attack or whatever.
00:09:36
Speaker
The reason I do this science stuff, health stuff, sorry.
00:09:41
Speaker
And so overall, it's a win.
00:09:43
Speaker
It's a win moment with minor failures.
Ninja Fascination and Childhood Memories
00:09:47
Speaker
I think that's a good place to be.
00:09:49
Speaker
Anyway, it's time to get on with my topic.
00:09:54
Speaker
And now, on with the show.
00:09:59
Speaker
Now, before I get into the whole โ the reason I โ look, I'm not talking about this from a point of an expert and stuff.
00:10:05
Speaker
It's nostalgia for me.
00:10:07
Speaker
But I felt like I've been thinking about it lately.
00:10:11
Speaker
And so I was like, yeah, let's talk about this stuff.
00:10:14
Speaker
It's kind of โ it's very cool.
00:10:17
Speaker
I think it was because I was surfing through music on Apple Music and I started listening to this Vanilla Ice song, which I don't know.
00:10:30
Speaker
Are you supposed to publicly admit these things?
00:10:32
Speaker
And it's this song called Go Ninja Go, right?
00:10:35
Speaker
Go Ninja, go Ninja, go Ninja, go.
00:10:37
Speaker
And I loved it when it came out.
00:10:39
Speaker
It was part of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, part two.
00:10:45
Speaker
And part one had an even cooler song because then I went back to that.
00:10:49
Speaker
I'm forgetting the name now.
00:10:52
Speaker
But it was, again, like a ninja song.
00:10:54
Speaker
It was some other rapper.
00:10:55
Speaker
And I should look this up before I do my episodes, right?
00:10:59
Speaker
I'm going to take a little quick break and look this up.
00:11:01
Speaker
Turtle Power by Partners in Crime.
00:11:04
Speaker
I think that was the...
00:11:06
Speaker
That was the name of the artist.
00:11:07
Speaker
I don't know them well, but that song, yeah, again, I was a kid growing up in the 90s and stuff, so yeah, that's it.
00:11:13
Speaker
It's a good... I think Turtle Power, the beat to it, it's still like kind of... It's aged well.
00:11:20
Speaker
I would still listen to that stuff.
00:11:22
Speaker
Ninja Vanilla Ice one, not so much maybe.
00:11:26
Speaker
I mean, I still enjoy it, but it's probably not cool anymore.
00:11:32
Speaker
Anyway, Ninja Turtles is going to come back.
00:11:35
Speaker
I want to begin in the 80s.
00:11:39
Speaker
It was a time when martial arts in general was becoming a big thing, right?
00:11:45
Speaker
I had Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jean-Claude Van Damme with Bloodsports, you know, all these great movies that come out.
00:11:55
Speaker
Great when I say it.
00:11:57
Speaker
And I got exposed to them early because my dad loves action movies.
00:12:03
Speaker
I was watching, you know, Arnold and Sylvester and all these, anything with action he loved.
00:12:08
Speaker
And so I got to watch all of them from a very young age.
00:12:11
Speaker
Probably not a good thing to be exposed to so much violence.
00:12:21
Speaker
So I watched all these great films and I got into the martial arts stuff.
00:12:26
Speaker
It was just the trend, you know.
00:12:27
Speaker
And I remember we were so clueless about it in growing up in Saudi because there weren't that many, you know, kids nowadays that go to these school, karate schools and stuff.
00:12:39
Speaker
That wasn't common back then in the Middle East.
00:12:42
Speaker
So I remember this kid.
00:12:44
Speaker
It was in third grade.
00:12:46
Speaker
And I think his name was Ibrahim.
00:12:48
Speaker
I'm pretty sure his name was Ibrahim, which is crazy because he didn't stick around.
00:12:53
Speaker
I think he moved away pretty soon.
00:12:56
Speaker
Remember names trying to keep up with names.
00:12:59
Speaker
I can't remember names of people I've met now two days ago, but his name sticks out.
00:13:06
Speaker
And he came in and he was like he spoke as an expert, right?
00:13:10
Speaker
Third grade or fourth grade.
00:13:12
Speaker
That's I think that's where we were.
00:13:14
Speaker
And he spoke like an expert.
00:13:16
Speaker
So we all just believed everything he said.
00:13:18
Speaker
And he was passionate about martial arts and claimed to have studied and trained and stuff.
00:13:24
Speaker
So we had this thing in our school where at the end, we'd all go for the afternoon prayer before going home.
00:13:32
Speaker
You had to go to it, right?
00:13:35
Speaker
And they would do these prayers in our playground, in the shaded area, because...
00:13:44
Speaker
I don't know why I didn't build a separate prayer area.
00:13:47
Speaker
We were a lot of kids.
00:13:48
Speaker
It was the whole school would come together or at least, you know, the primary and the secondary would do different.
00:13:55
Speaker
You go in and they'd lay out these carpets, huge carpets where we'd all gather to pray.
00:14:01
Speaker
This was the mid-after in the Zohar prayer that Muslims do, right?
00:14:05
Speaker
And I hated it, not because I just as a kid, I just hated being forced to do anything.
00:14:11
Speaker
And then also, before we pray, we kind of wash up and stuff.
00:14:15
Speaker
And all these kids would just walk up with their wet socks and feet and onto that carpet and and would get wet and it's just melt because then they roll it up and roll it.
00:14:26
Speaker
back out the next day and he just just really like and we live in the desert right so it's dusty all of that i just hated the smell so it just but what i did like about it was just before the prayer we had like good 15 20 minutes to just run around get ready for prayer um if and what that meant was just mucking about and this kid ibrahim
00:14:50
Speaker
He would talk to us.
00:14:51
Speaker
I remember these conversations where he would do these locks on us.
00:14:57
Speaker
I think he was just making it up when he looked back at it now.
00:15:00
Speaker
We tried to slide our way out of it and break out.
00:15:03
Speaker
Based on that, he would decide what belt we wear.
00:15:10
Speaker
He would just go, you know, Salman, you did this.
00:15:13
Speaker
You're like at the yellow belt level.
00:15:16
Speaker
And another friend would be confined to white belt because he didn't break out properly.
00:15:20
Speaker
And another one would be slightly higher.
00:15:22
Speaker
I don't even remember what belt colors there are after yellow.
00:15:26
Speaker
But it was pretty funny because we just believed it.
00:15:30
Speaker
And we just wanted his attention and his approval so that when he did confer whatever belt he did on us, we were like, yeah.
00:15:42
Speaker
I had no training, no class ever taken for martial art.
00:15:46
Speaker
But I believed that I was the equivalent of a yellow belt.
00:15:50
Speaker
And I just think, what a moron I was.
00:15:54
Speaker
And we all just believed him because he was so confident about it.
00:15:58
Speaker
No one fact-checked it.
00:16:00
Speaker
Not amongst my friends.
00:16:01
Speaker
We were just stupid.
00:16:03
Speaker
It was cool at that time.
00:16:05
Speaker
And so in general, martial arts was like a cool thing for me.
00:16:09
Speaker
But then the ninjas, right?
00:16:10
Speaker
My dad would also show me these Japanese ninja films.
00:16:15
Speaker
I don't remember half of them, what they were, what their name was.
00:16:18
Speaker
But I was just like, this is so cool.
00:16:20
Speaker
They're like blending into the dark and they're wearing these cool black outfits with swords and nunchucks and star things.
00:16:28
Speaker
What do you call the star things they throw?
00:16:29
Speaker
And just disappearing with the smoke.
00:16:32
Speaker
i don't know why their dress enamored me so much i lived in soudi i saw women dressed up like that all the time but look um it was just cool all right it was just super super fascinating and then you had all these movies that were specific ninja ones that were fun as well like there was the kid stuff like american ninja uh that was fun there were three ninjas the three ninjas there were kids doing it and so it was like hey man i could be a uh i could be a ninja
00:16:59
Speaker
And then you had the cooler ones.
00:17:01
Speaker
And it was all like, even though a lot of times the ninjas were sort of the bad guys, I loved it.
00:17:07
Speaker
I just were so cool.
00:17:09
Speaker
Snake Eyes from G.I.
00:17:11
Speaker
Joe is one of my favorite characters, right?
00:17:12
Speaker
He's pretty much a ninja.
00:17:14
Speaker
And so they were just so awesome.
00:17:17
Speaker
And so I wanted to be one.
00:17:19
Speaker
Yeah, I want to be a ninja.
00:17:21
Speaker
And I'm glad I didn't take that route because as I found out later in my life, very recently, as I studied stuff about ninja, I realized, hey, that stuff was just Hollywood stuff.
00:17:33
Speaker
They just bastardized that as well, right?
00:17:35
Speaker
So the movies just turn it into all the tropes of ninja stuff that we see.
00:17:40
Speaker
Apparently, they didn't dress like that.
00:17:42
Speaker
Apparently, they didn't do all that smoke stuff and disappear.
00:17:45
Speaker
What their mode...
00:17:47
Speaker
They were more like spies.
00:17:49
Speaker
So when you want to be a good spy, you kind of blend in in normal clothes.
00:17:53
Speaker
They were actually more kind of cooler about it, subtle about that stuff.
00:18:00
Speaker
And that broke my heart because now it's just some guy roaming them around.
00:18:06
Speaker
Their training was probably still cool.
00:18:08
Speaker
And I think some of their weapons were correct.
00:18:11
Speaker
The cool stuff that I did learn about them was that
00:18:15
Speaker
Summarize and ninjas, they just... The Summarize had like a very strong code of how you attacked and stuff where the ninjas, whereas the ninjas were like, anything goes to win, you know?
00:18:26
Speaker
And so the two of them, their whole history was quite interesting to me.
00:18:30
Speaker
That was the cool stuff, but I really wish that smoke thing was true.
00:18:35
Speaker
It was one of the coolest things that stood out for me.
00:18:37
Speaker
And then along came the Ninja Turtles.
00:18:40
Speaker
And that was like a combination of everything I loved.
00:18:43
Speaker
It was, well, not turtles per se, but cool cartoons, funny stuff, the Japanese stuff, the ninja stuff, and the evil Shredder and his team, and eventually the cool songs, right?
00:18:58
Speaker
So all of that put together was just enamoring to me.
00:19:04
Speaker
But this one thing happened.
00:19:06
Speaker
I was really interested in Ninja Turtles.
00:19:08
Speaker
And then my uncle, my favorite uncle, he went to, he was visiting the States and he got some stuff for us of Ninja Turtle merchandise and toys when he came back.
00:19:17
Speaker
It wasn't easy to find in Saudi.
00:19:19
Speaker
And I was like really looking forward to it.
00:19:23
Speaker
And then he brought this stuff and he had these t-shirts.
00:19:26
Speaker
So that was very cool.
00:19:27
Speaker
I had my Ninja Turtles t-shirts.
00:19:28
Speaker
And then he brought these toys.
00:19:31
Speaker
And my younger brother and I, we kind of like tried dividing.
00:19:35
Speaker
He got Donatello, and I picked up this.
00:19:39
Speaker
It looked like these walkie-talkies for Ninja Turtles, right?
00:19:43
Speaker
They were shaped like the turtle shell.
00:19:45
Speaker
They looked awesome.
00:19:47
Speaker
So I grabbed that versus my younger brother because I thought that was the cooler toy.
00:19:52
Speaker
And when I took it out, I realized they weren't actual walkie-talkies.
00:19:56
Speaker
They were these Morse code things.
00:19:58
Speaker
So all it did was like you press this button and go, dee, dee, dee, dee.
00:20:01
Speaker
And up until then, I kind of heard about Morse code in school, but we never studied it.
00:20:06
Speaker
And I didn't know what it was.
00:20:08
Speaker
And I was just so disappointed.
00:20:10
Speaker
I was like, this is stupid.
00:20:13
Speaker
I've never told my uncle that.
00:20:14
Speaker
He saw me really happy about the stuff.
00:20:16
Speaker
He didn't see the disappointment after.
00:20:17
Speaker
It's pretty bratty of me to not be happy with that toy.
00:20:22
Speaker
But anyway, it was just... I think when I look back at it now, I think if I hadn't been such an ungrateful brat, I would have learned Morse code through it because it had the whole system and how to do it.
00:20:33
Speaker
But I was just so disappointed.
00:20:34
Speaker
I tossed it aside.
00:20:37
Speaker
play with it like as a fake thing and you know when you play make-believe or whatever uh that was stupid just but also it was i don't know i don't know what to say anyway that was a little bit of a disappointing story uh and that was that and and then i think the whole ninja thing died at least for me for a long long time and i haven't thought about ninjas
00:21:01
Speaker
which is weird because why would I think about ninjas in general?
00:21:05
Speaker
But maybe no cool film has come out in a while until I saw
Ninjas in Modern Times and Media
00:21:11
Speaker
That's the other thing that sparked this.
00:21:13
Speaker
Netflix had this show called House of Ninjas.
00:21:17
Speaker
It's nothing great, but...
00:21:19
Speaker
I kind of liked it, but more so it just kind of brought back some stuff about the whole idea of ninjas and everything and how they're portrayed and how cool that stuff would be.
00:21:29
Speaker
And would they be useful in this day and age where you've got too many cameras and super weapons and stuff?
00:21:39
Speaker
new ninja thing be now in a modern i think that's the next movie i'd like to see is the adaptation of ninjas to modern technology and life and how how they could still be realistic about it you know that i would watch that film so if anyone is writing a script you're welcome i was just giving you a multi-million dollar film idea right which i would you have at least one audience member that would definitely buy a ticket
00:22:08
Speaker
me um anyway uh that that that was the kind of exposure i had for ninjas and stuff and i love that
Action Shows and Influences
00:22:15
Speaker
stuff and and i think uh lately i'm just gonna study stuff around it a bit more i think i'm too old to go back and like learn martial arts unless in your 40s that's possible if you think please let me know i don't want to break bones man i just i can't um
00:22:33
Speaker
And I've been busy with some TV shows too.
00:22:38
Speaker
Lately, the other stuff I've been watching is this show called Rookie.
00:22:43
Speaker
The sixth season is just on, but Netflix out here has only the first five seasons, which I binged.
00:22:49
Speaker
That was great when you find a show that has a few seasons out already.
00:22:52
Speaker
I also did that with 9-1-1 Reno.
00:22:57
Speaker
Yeah, the one based in Texas, Austin.
00:23:00
Speaker
Yeah, both great shows.
00:23:02
Speaker
I have a lot of respect for first responders now, I guess.
00:23:06
Speaker
But mostly I'm watching it for the action and the danger and crazy stuff.
00:23:11
Speaker
Thanks, Dad, for all my love of bad stuff.
00:23:16
Speaker
Yeah, but I would recommend both shows.
00:23:18
Speaker
I think they're cool.
Episode Conclusion
00:23:20
Speaker
groundbreaking television, but they're definitely TV shows that are good to kill some time with.
00:23:29
Speaker
That's my expert review of those things.
00:23:33
Speaker
