Cultural Journey Through Comedy

00:00:00
Speaker
I grew up confused about my culture and identity and felt out of place most of the time until I found comedy, which forced me to be honest with myself and I realized mostly I'm just an expat brat.

Weather and Seasonal Changes

00:00:13
Speaker
Welcome to my show.
00:00:14
Speaker
I'm Salman Qureshi.
00:00:17
Speaker
All right, people, I've I freshly recovered from a thunderstorm and we're going into spring officially.
00:00:22
Speaker
Isn't that isn't that what it's supposed to be between like this time between April and June, July?
00:00:31
Speaker
I grew up.
00:00:33
Speaker
Without really knowing what spring was.
00:00:34
Speaker
I mean, obviously, I heard of it.
00:00:36
Speaker
I heard about the four seasons.
00:00:37
Speaker
But when you grow up in the Middle East, there's just one season.
00:00:40
Speaker
It's summer.
00:00:41
Speaker
And well, actually, maybe two.
00:00:42
Speaker
There was summer and then like lesser summer.
00:00:45
Speaker
There was a bit of a winter, I suppose.
00:00:48
Speaker
So maybe three seasons.
00:00:49
Speaker
I don't know.
00:00:50
Speaker
But spring and fall were just like these unique concepts.
00:00:53
Speaker
And I thought they were amazing.
00:00:54
Speaker
something that Americans have, just like McDonald's.
00:00:58
Speaker
Eventually, McDonald's came over to the Middle East and so did spring, or at least my understanding of it, because I just didn't know what it was supposed to look like.
00:01:08
Speaker
Look, when there are no trees around and you don't know what's going on and there's not a lot like animals and flowers blooming and stuff around you, you have no idea.
00:01:18
Speaker
I didn't know.
00:01:18
Speaker
I realized later that's what spring is.
00:01:21
Speaker
Now, it's easier to tell now.
00:01:23
Speaker
I know this sounds bizarre.
00:01:24
Speaker
It's easier now because people have gardens and like Dubai is more green overall, even compared to when I first moved here.
00:01:32
Speaker
And so you see different things happening and you're like, ah, yeah, spring, flowers blooming.
00:01:38
Speaker
All I had back then was date palm trees and they don't really go through seasons as much.
00:01:43
Speaker
Maybe they have like dates come out at some point.
00:01:45
Speaker
I should have known.
00:01:47
Speaker
I didn't even know spring and fall were two different things until like I.
00:01:53
Speaker
Obviously, I did, but it just never made sense, right?
00:01:56
Speaker
So now it does, and it's supposed to be spring, but temperature-wise, it's already starting to feel like summer.
00:02:02
Speaker
So forgive me for not getting seasons, all right?
00:02:06
Speaker
Don't judge me so much.
00:02:07
Speaker
Anyway, life is good.
00:02:11
Speaker
And hey, let's start off with a big question.
00:02:15
Speaker
Win.
00:02:17
Speaker
My family has a new addition.

Family Stories and Humor

00:02:19
Speaker
It's a little baby boy.
00:02:20
Speaker
My youngest brother just had him, obviously with his wife, because how else?
00:02:26
Speaker
We're still not at that stage where we're producing them by test tubes.
00:02:30
Speaker
Or are we?
00:02:30
Speaker
I keep forgetting.
00:02:31
Speaker
When they said designer baby, I'm not sure what's happening there with celebrities.
00:02:34
Speaker
But someday, maybe if I'm rich enough, I might have one and I'll tell you guys about it.
00:02:38
Speaker
I'll tell you the inside secrets of what's going on with that stuff.
00:02:41
Speaker
But for now, we had a baby in the family and he's so cute.
00:02:46
Speaker
His name, they've named him Isaiah.
00:02:48
Speaker
And just between us, I've forgotten what it means.
00:02:50
Speaker
All right.
00:02:51
Speaker
He's told me a couple of times and I forget where he got it from.
00:02:55
Speaker
And I think it was like a lot of debate over the name.
00:02:58
Speaker
As responsible brown siblings, my sister and I really tried imposing what name they should go with.
00:03:04
Speaker
But they finally decided on that.
00:03:06
Speaker
And I think that's why I tuned out.
00:03:07
Speaker
I mean, don't get me wrong.
00:03:08
Speaker
I like the name, but because I didn't get to choose it.
00:03:11
Speaker
I mean, why should the parents get to choose it, right?
00:03:15
Speaker
You married into the family, sir.
00:03:19
Speaker
And I know my brother doesn't listen to my podcast.
00:03:21
Speaker
It doesn't matter that I've forgotten the meaning.
00:03:23
Speaker
But it's a cool name.
00:03:25
Speaker
And then we fought over the spelling of it, too, just to make it worse.
00:03:29
Speaker
And then they decided...
00:03:31
Speaker
to go with the way they wanted to spell it.
00:03:33
Speaker
So, you know, it's not things aren't off to a great start that way.
00:03:36
Speaker
But I mean, these young people, right?
00:03:39
Speaker
What do you do?
00:03:39
Speaker
What do you do?
00:03:40
Speaker
No respect for the elders.
00:03:42
Speaker
But he's cute.
00:03:43
Speaker
He's adorable.
00:03:44
Speaker
Not my brother, the baby.
00:03:47
Speaker
He's he's a mixed baby.
00:03:49
Speaker
And they always I guess they always turn out cute, right?
00:03:51
Speaker
Like nature's trying to tell us, look, mix up and you come out more
00:03:55
Speaker
prettier and better and we still want to stick to our racist ways and whatnot.
00:04:01
Speaker
Anyway, so my sister-in-law is German and she's a great addition to the family as well.
00:04:12
Speaker
I love her.
00:04:13
Speaker
She's beautiful.
00:04:14
Speaker
My brother's handsome.
00:04:15
Speaker
The baby's super cute because of that, I suppose.
00:04:18
Speaker
But you know what?
00:04:20
Speaker
You know what was really funny?
00:04:21
Speaker
The baby is
00:04:22
Speaker
He's big.
00:04:24
Speaker
He is so big.
00:04:25
Speaker
He's like a seven pounder.
00:04:27
Speaker
I don't think any of us have ever had.
00:04:28
Speaker
You know, this is nice because all my siblings were five.
00:04:31
Speaker
We all now have kids.
00:04:33
Speaker
We all had late babies.
00:04:35
Speaker
So my youngest brother just about joined us now.
00:04:38
Speaker
Pretty late in the game, but oh my God, none of us have had a baby that big, man.
00:04:43
Speaker
He was a week old and I was already like, when's he going to nursery, man?
00:04:49
Speaker
He's just gorgeous.
00:04:51
Speaker
He didn't have that ugly, fresh, out of the womb, deflated look ever.
00:04:58
Speaker
Just straight up nice, round, cute cheeks and the best features from both sides.
00:05:06
Speaker
So I'm loving it, man.
00:05:09
Speaker
But you know what?
00:05:10
Speaker
It makes me โ€“ it's not that long.
00:05:13
Speaker
It's been five years since my kid.
00:05:15
Speaker
And I already was like forgetting things about what to do with babies and the care you need for them and how small.
00:05:21
Speaker
I know he's a big baby, but he's still really small and light compared to my little โ€“
00:05:27
Speaker
bugger who still likes to be picked up and walked around and it's breaking my back.
00:05:33
Speaker
But anyway, different story.
00:05:35
Speaker
My sister, she's got a knack for it.
00:05:37
Speaker
She just remembers everything.
00:05:39
Speaker
She's at three, so it's more embedded in her.
00:05:42
Speaker
But but she's just great at it.
00:05:44
Speaker
Meanwhile, I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:05:47
Speaker
They do have milk a lot.
00:05:51
Speaker
And my brothers, you know, it's really nice to see my younger one.
00:05:55
Speaker
Just just being a father.
00:05:56
Speaker
It's funny seeing your siblings become dads and or mothers and just going, shit, I know what this guy was up to.
00:06:05
Speaker
Should we allow him to have a kid?
00:06:08
Speaker
Yeah.
00:06:09
Speaker
But you know what I love most is just when they're new, when it's your sibling's brother, you have the same love for them as you would for your own child.
00:06:18
Speaker
And what I really love is getting to pick him up and hold him and just make him tickle and laugh a little bit and just make him smile and then hand him back over to his parents and go home and sleep in peace.
00:06:33
Speaker
Oh, my God.
00:06:33
Speaker
I love that stuff.
00:06:34
Speaker
I do not need...
00:06:36
Speaker
to go through this baby stuff again.
00:06:38
Speaker
It's much harder than I remember.
00:06:40
Speaker
Oh God.
00:06:41
Speaker
But yeah, that's a win, man.
00:06:43
Speaker
It's a happy times in the family.

TV Shows and Changing Perspectives

00:06:45
Speaker
My loser moment of the week is, well, it's not even, it's longer than a week now.
00:06:50
Speaker
I've been watching reruns of Suit and look, rarely do I go back and watch reruns of things.
00:06:58
Speaker
But I don't know whether it's I just can't find great shows right now or nothing really appeals to me.
00:07:03
Speaker
But I've gone to Suits, back to Suits like three or four times now.
00:07:09
Speaker
And I'm already on season five.
00:07:11
Speaker
I'm binging it again.
00:07:12
Speaker
But what I like is that I know it's going through a resurgence or went through it last year, maybe because it was fresh on Netflix.
00:07:21
Speaker
It's interesting to me because I loved the show when it first came out and not as many friends or family had watched it.
00:07:28
Speaker
But it's great.
00:07:30
Speaker
You know, one of the things I found interesting was that watching it this time, like, I was team Mike more early on, at least the first time I watched it.
00:07:41
Speaker
And I've never finished it.
00:07:43
Speaker
I've never watched it last season because Mike leaves and I kind of lost interest.
00:07:47
Speaker
But now when I rewatch it, I'm like, Mike's such a whiner.
00:07:53
Speaker
Every time something comes up, he's just like, my parents died in the car, so I want to make them pay for this.
00:07:59
Speaker
And I'm like, I get it.
00:08:01
Speaker
But I'm also like, oh, God, shut up, man.
00:08:02
Speaker
Like, move on, man.
00:08:05
Speaker
It sounds horrible when I say it.
00:08:07
Speaker
I've kind of swung more strongly towards Team Harvey now.
00:08:12
Speaker
I'm just like, yeah, he's the man.
00:08:15
Speaker
I think as I grow older, I'm worried I'm going to become more Republican or something.
00:08:21
Speaker
Please keep me in check with those things, right?
00:08:25
Speaker
Yeah, but it's a great show.
00:08:26
Speaker
It still is.
00:08:27
Speaker
I still enjoy it.
00:08:28
Speaker
But the fact that I'm watching reruns and not doing something productive, deep down inside, I feel bad about it.
00:08:33
Speaker
So...
00:08:34
Speaker
There you go.
00:08:35
Speaker
They're, you know, good things and bad things.
00:08:38
Speaker
All right.
00:08:39
Speaker
Anyway, listen.
00:08:41
Speaker
Listen, today's episode is special.
00:08:44
Speaker
All right?
00:08:45
Speaker
It's Bionic 6.
00:08:47
Speaker
If you don't know what Bionic 6 is...
00:08:50
Speaker
I'm actually not surprised.
00:08:51
Speaker
It was huge for me when I was growing up.
00:08:54
Speaker
It was one of the shows I watched over and over again.
00:08:56
Speaker
I had it on VHS tapes, and I think I spent all summer for a few years every time going back and watching it again and again and again.
00:09:04
Speaker
And I realized only very recently.
00:09:08
Speaker
that it actually was just two seasons long and there are like about 65 episodes in there.
00:09:14
Speaker
It felt like it went on for years for me.
00:09:17
Speaker
I guess 65 episodes is a lot, but I really thought it went on for a number of years, man.
00:09:24
Speaker
The reason the show, you might not have heard about it and why it got canceled wasn't because it wasn't great.
00:09:29
Speaker
It was a great show.
00:09:31
Speaker
But the problem was, I think, on some production side, the team that made it, apparently they were like top-notch writers and creators and stuff that got together for this one.
00:09:43
Speaker
And then the production house that was doing it, I think, got sold off or something.
00:09:47
Speaker
You know, one of those things happened, and it got lost in the middle or just got shelved because of that.
00:09:53
Speaker
Which is a shame because I think if it had gone on a couple more years, it would have been as it would have had a cult as big as for Ninja Turtles or whatever.
00:10:03
Speaker
Because it was it had everything, man.
00:10:06
Speaker
Look, if you haven't watched, I'll tell you.
00:10:07
Speaker
Right.
00:10:08
Speaker
It's about a family of six people, Bionic Six.
00:10:11
Speaker
And I think it's one of the reasons I resonated with it a lot is because we were a family of seven, a bunch of siblings, you know.
00:10:17
Speaker
And so they were they were fine.
00:10:19
Speaker
four siblings and we were five and you know just kind of like it kind of like I felt like we were there we were part of this we were bionics seven six you get what I mean right so it was it's quite relatable that way and then the story was really cool it was um
00:10:36
Speaker
The dad starts off.
00:10:37
Speaker
Look, so there's this Professor Sharp who runs, I think it was called a special units, special science unit, something like that, some lab, special units lab.
00:10:49
Speaker
It doesn't matter.
00:10:52
Speaker
He creates these bionic creations and energy, and he researches all that kind of stuff.
00:11:00
Speaker
And then the dad, he becomes bionic one, so he's kind of like secretly, I think only the mom knows, and he's secretly saving the world while pretending to work, the whole Superman stuff.
00:11:13
Speaker
But it's pretty cool.
00:11:14
Speaker
And then this incident happens, and all the family...
00:11:19
Speaker
has to be infused with the bionic powers because otherwise they'll die.
00:11:26
Speaker
You know, had to do it.
00:11:27
Speaker
And so now they all become like characters in this thing and they fight evil as a family, which is really cool.
00:11:34
Speaker
And they have cool names and cool costumes.
00:11:37
Speaker
And the way they turn into like the bionic six was always cool.
00:11:41
Speaker
Just check this sound clip out.
00:11:48
Speaker
That's them basically, like, they do this kind of cool move where they shuffle their arms around.
00:11:55
Speaker
You got to go online and watch it.
00:11:57
Speaker
And then at the final bit, they click the ring on their right finger with the wristwatch on their left, and they say what you just heard.
00:12:05
Speaker
And then they turn, like, you know, they're in regular clothes, and they turn into the Bionic 6.
00:12:10
Speaker
And then they had, like, cool names, like, well, kind of.
00:12:13
Speaker
I look back at it now, I'm like, some of them didn't.
00:12:16
Speaker
Like, Mother was Mother 1.
00:12:20
Speaker
Father wasn't father one, but mother one was mother one.
00:12:24
Speaker
And she had the latest powers, I think.
00:12:28
Speaker
And then you had a sports one who was, yeah, basically very cool.
00:12:37
Speaker
I think he was one of my favorites.
00:12:38
Speaker
And then the sister was called Rock One.
00:12:41
Speaker
And then it gets funnier because then there was another son named IQ.
00:12:46
Speaker
He was in IQ1.
00:12:47
Speaker
I don't know why that happened.
00:12:48
Speaker
He was also, the rest of them are white.
00:12:51
Speaker
He's an Afro-American and so probably adopted, right?
00:12:56
Speaker
And I think that's why he didn't have one because they were like, look, we love you and shit, but we're not giving you our last superhero family name or something.
00:13:04
Speaker
So he was just IQ.
00:13:08
Speaker
But at least it wasn't, you know, to be fair, the show didn't make the black guy the brood, typical kind of thing.
00:13:16
Speaker
He was actually the smartest out of them and polite and everything.
00:13:20
Speaker
And strong at the same time.
00:13:21
Speaker
So a little bit of that.
00:13:23
Speaker
Anyway, and then, oh, sorry, the youngest one was also karate one.
00:13:27
Speaker
And you might immediately picture a Far Eastern kid.
00:13:31
Speaker
And you're right.
00:13:32
Speaker
So much for not being so stereotypical.
00:13:40
Speaker
Oh, but he got...
00:13:41
Speaker
He got to have karate one in it.
00:13:43
Speaker
One was in his name.
00:13:45
Speaker
Well, I don't know, man.
00:13:46
Speaker
I guess the Asian kid was treated better than the Afro-American kid by this family.
00:13:55
Speaker
So those are your characters.
00:13:57
Speaker
And they had this gigantic gorilla robot at home as well.
00:14:04
Speaker
Was it called Fufu, something like that?
00:14:09
Speaker
And he was one of my favorites.
00:14:11
Speaker
But he made it so obvious that this is the Bionic Six family.
00:14:14
Speaker
I bring that up for a reason, all right?
00:14:16
Speaker
Let me give you a little bit more background.
00:14:17
Speaker
They're arch enemies where... And they had cool enemies.
00:14:21
Speaker
They had this guy called Dr. Scarab.
00:14:23
Speaker
And he was the brother of Professor Sharp, the guy I mentioned earlier.
00:14:27
Speaker
But he was like... He's...
00:14:29
Speaker
like the mad scientist version of it.
00:14:32
Speaker
And it was quite funny because the professor shop, the hero was tall, lanky and typical like glasses nerd scientist looking.
00:14:38
Speaker
And then the brother was like round, fat and short.
00:14:41
Speaker
And so I guess those were kind of cool, funny stereotypes they did.
00:14:46
Speaker
And he had this, the younger brother, Dr. Scarab, had this, had this like fixation about wanting to be the smarter one and everything.
00:14:55
Speaker
And so he decides to conquer the world.
00:14:57
Speaker
But much like Shredder, he couldn't get the formula right.
00:15:01
Speaker
And so his henchmen were, often had the powers, but not,
00:15:05
Speaker
as smart or worked as well as Bionic 6, and that's why they kept failing.
00:15:12
Speaker
Yeah, there were a lot of similarities, and I think this came before Ninja Turtles, so maybe they stole that from this, or it's just a common use theme in anime and everything.
00:15:21
Speaker
I don't know, enough.
00:15:23
Speaker
But that was the background, and he had interesting henchmen, this guy called Chopper, who'd go...
00:15:31
Speaker
Every time he'd speak, he'd be like, I'm going there.
00:15:38
Speaker
I found all this cool back then.
00:15:39
Speaker
It's starting to sound silly.
00:15:41
Speaker
Then he had this guy like Glove who was one of those characters.
00:15:46
Speaker
They always have this evil guy with a right-hand guy who wants to take over secretly, right?
00:15:51
Speaker
G.I.
00:15:52
Speaker
Joe, I think, had it.
00:15:54
Speaker
I guess Ninja Turtles, Shredder, Krang and Shredder.
00:15:57
Speaker
shredder maybe they were kind of like that you get the point um but he keeps failing and and that's the show right so the the battles between them and it's a great show i don't know how like i said if it had run a bit longer i think there'd be a cult and it would have been turned into a movie for sure i still think it should be picked up and revived because it the story and the characters and the tech it was ahead of its time and it was still
00:16:22
Speaker
like be cool right now it would still like it had great stories and everything going in there and i remember a lot of the episodes in there with the storyline not just because i re-watched it a lot but they just stuck you know they they had like cool interesting themes in the episodes uh where you're having fun and that's hard to do for particularly kids shows right they they had some like
00:16:46
Speaker
All the funny stuff and action and everything.
00:16:48
Speaker
But they also sometimes had these cool things to think about and message.
00:16:52
Speaker
And I always think that's why some things stick for kids and you shouldn't dump stuff down for them.
00:16:58
Speaker
Yeah.
00:16:59
Speaker
So so I loved it.
00:17:00
Speaker
And and like I said, we would have done better.
00:17:03
Speaker
But there was one there's one thing they probably need to change if they brought the show back.
00:17:07
Speaker
All right.
00:17:08
Speaker
And it was this.
00:17:09
Speaker
There's this, you know, the whole Superman Clark Kent joke that goes around about him just putting on glasses and covering it up.
00:17:17
Speaker
Well, these guys tried even less.
00:17:21
Speaker
It's really bad.
00:17:22
Speaker
Like they did not have any.
00:17:24
Speaker
Even the Ninja Turtles had that stupid eye mask.
00:17:27
Speaker
These guys did nothing.
00:17:28
Speaker
They walked around as a family.
00:17:30
Speaker
So obvious because they've got this two adopted kids with them.
00:17:34
Speaker
Sometimes even the gigantic robot.
00:17:36
Speaker
At home, right?
00:17:38
Speaker
And they just walk around.
00:17:40
Speaker
Oh, and the gigantic robot has the Bionic 6 logo on his chest.
00:17:45
Speaker
Maybe he didn't go out in public as much, but I don't know.
00:17:48
Speaker
He was there right with them.
00:17:50
Speaker
And so they always walk around and then...
00:17:53
Speaker
So no one ever recognizes them.
00:17:54
Speaker
They just walk and people walk by them in busy areas and stuff.
00:17:58
Speaker
And then some disaster happens.
00:18:00
Speaker
Right.
00:18:01
Speaker
And they go, shit, we need to turn into Bionic Six and to do it right in front.
00:18:05
Speaker
They don't even have the Superman thing of like running into the phone booth and changing costumes and coming out.
00:18:11
Speaker
Nope.
00:18:12
Speaker
They just stand there in the middle as people are running around and they do the whole Bionic Six thing.
00:18:18
Speaker
Which is really funny, because right after they change, people go, oh, the Bionic 6 are here.
00:18:26
Speaker
Dude, there are episodes where they do it publicly.
00:18:29
Speaker
There's an episode where Scarab, like, crashes this teen party, and he suspects the Bionic 6 kids are there.
00:18:36
Speaker
And it's, like, their faces are so obvious, but they're, like, checking everyone, going, hmm, maybe it's this one, maybe it's that one.
00:18:42
Speaker
And then they mistake this other blonde kid.
00:18:44
Speaker
Sports 1 is a blonde guy for being Sports 1.
00:18:48
Speaker
I'm just like...
00:18:51
Speaker
Yeah, this was pretty stupid.
00:18:52
Speaker
This bit, this one thing was just really dumb about the show.
00:18:56
Speaker
Why?
00:18:57
Speaker
Why did they do that kind of stuff?
00:19:00
Speaker
Anyway, so that's one thing that wouldn't need changing because it was such a big loophole.
00:19:05
Speaker
And I'm sure if it was brought into the modern time, whoever rewrites the show, reproduces it or something would be cool.
00:19:12
Speaker
I genuinely think it would be such a cool movie to watch as well, right?
00:19:16
Speaker
Because it's got this mix of superpower science and...
00:19:20
Speaker
adventures and cool stories and family.
00:19:23
Speaker
Family, yes, we all love family.
00:19:26
Speaker
And it just would resonate with most people.
00:19:30
Speaker
Maybe they might make it smaller because of people having less kids, but no, I think overall it would work.
00:19:36
Speaker
It would work.
00:19:36
Speaker
And if you haven't watched this show,
00:19:38
Speaker
It's there on YouTube.
00:19:39
Speaker
I think I think they pretty much uploaded all the episodes up there and you could watch it there.
00:19:44
Speaker
The only problem is the print is so bad.
00:19:47
Speaker
Like most of the episodes, I was like, God, this is hard to watch because of the print.
00:19:51
Speaker
It wasn't because it's made cheaply.
00:19:54
Speaker
But the upload quality isn't always great.
00:19:57
Speaker
And I try getting my nephews and nieces to watch it.
00:20:00
Speaker
But, you know, kids just they want they just can't tell when something's old and say, I've tried with a few different shows and they just kind of they try for my sake, but I can tell they're not into it because.
00:20:13
Speaker
I think that makes such a big difference to them.
00:20:15
Speaker
So yeah, there you go.
00:20:16
Speaker
That's the story of Bionic 6.
00:20:18
Speaker
I grew up watching.
00:20:19
Speaker
It was a big thing for me.
00:20:19
Speaker
It was a big thing in school with my friends.
00:20:22
Speaker
We had this whole phase where everyone was Bionic 6.
00:20:25
Speaker
Everyone had I'm this character thing with it.
00:20:28
Speaker
And it was such a phenomena.
00:20:30
Speaker
But like I said, in my memory, I thought it was much longer than it actually was.
00:20:35
Speaker
And that's why it interested me to go back and relook at it and realize, ah,
00:20:41
Speaker
Shit, it was just a couple of years.
00:20:44
Speaker
I didn't have action figures and stuff.
00:20:45
Speaker
Anyway, if you're listening to this, watch it.
00:20:48
Speaker
If you're a producer or linked to someone, tell them to start an online petition, get the show back on, man.
00:20:53
Speaker
I would love to watch.
00:20:54
Speaker
You have at least one customer who'll buy a cinema ticket.
00:20:57
Speaker
And maybe that's not a good reason to spend a few million dollars on something.
00:21:02
Speaker
But...
00:21:05
Speaker
I hope at some point, while I can still see things and go to cinemas and stuff like that, it comes out.
00:21:13
Speaker
Yeah, I hope you enjoyed this little intro to Bionic Six, man.
00:21:18
Speaker
One of my favorites from kids.
00:21:19
Speaker
If you're a golf kid, I'm pretty sure you watched it because we didn't have anything else to do back then.
00:21:24
Speaker
Anyway, all right.

Stand-up Comedy Creative Process

00:21:31
Speaker
And, of course, I've been enjoying my stand-up comedy.
00:21:34
Speaker
I go through these phases where I love it.
00:21:35
Speaker
I just got to ask again, so I'm going to talk about this.
00:21:39
Speaker
I get asked all the time.
00:21:41
Speaker
This one question that people do with stand-up, it's how do you come up with the material?
00:21:46
Speaker
What do you do?
00:21:47
Speaker
And I think people have these fixations either of like you're just coming up with stuff on the spot.
00:21:52
Speaker
That's not true.
00:21:53
Speaker
And being surprised it's scripted.
00:21:55
Speaker
It has to be.
00:21:57
Speaker
And and wondering whether we just like walk around and pop up ideas, pop up or or we spend like days writing the stuff out.
00:22:07
Speaker
The truth is I give advice sometimes when people press me because I don't want to sound like a douche and make them think, oh, he's just hiding the secrets and everything.
00:22:17
Speaker
It's not that I really don't know.
00:22:19
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:20
Speaker
I don't know what makes something funny.
00:22:24
Speaker
Like deep down, I really don't know.
00:22:26
Speaker
And where do these ideas come from and how they form?
00:22:28
Speaker
All right.
00:22:29
Speaker
Because I also think everybody has their own way of doing every comic.
00:22:34
Speaker
There's the extreme examples of Jerry Seinfeld who spend hours writing.
00:22:39
Speaker
And I've been lectured about that sometimes.
00:22:40
Speaker
You got to sit down and write and just write for hours and hours.
00:22:43
Speaker
And I just can't do it.
00:22:45
Speaker
It just doesn't work for me.
00:22:47
Speaker
Then apparently there's the other side.
00:22:49
Speaker
I don't know how true this is, but someone like Eddie Izzard, I've heard because he's dyslexic, he can't write down his stuff.
00:22:56
Speaker
So he kind of just memorizes and riffs on it on stage and comes up with stuff.
00:23:01
Speaker
And I think I'm more that than Jerry.
00:23:05
Speaker
And maybe I do still try to force myself to write sometimes.
00:23:09
Speaker
But for me, material kind of just forms in my head as I'm thinking about things and I go, oh, this might be a funny way to say it and stuff.
00:23:17
Speaker
And I'm sure if I wrote down, it could get better.
00:23:19
Speaker
And that way I'm lazy.
00:23:21
Speaker
But but that's how I like come up with ideas.
00:23:24
Speaker
I just kind of constantly am like running them in my head, pretending to speak them out in my sound crazy now.
00:23:32
Speaker
And then eventually they turn into jokes.
00:23:34
Speaker
But but some of my best jokes and material also come on stage when I'm riffing, when I'm talking to an audience or I'm just playing with my jokes and I get a nice addition or a bigger laugh over something I say and becomes a complete joke then.
00:23:50
Speaker
And that's beautiful to experience.
00:23:52
Speaker
So for me, it's a lot about.
00:23:55
Speaker
playing and being creative and just having fun and then seeing what comes out.
00:24:00
Speaker
Obviously, it's hard when you're trying to write a one-hour show to just always have to wait for inspiration.
00:24:07
Speaker
You can't.
00:24:09
Speaker
But I also find instead of sitting and writing, the more shows I do,
00:24:12
Speaker
the more material I start generating because I'm on stage.
00:24:15
Speaker
And, you know, it just it's a flow for me.
00:24:18
Speaker
And that's what works for me.
00:24:19
Speaker
So if you do plan on giving stand up a go and want to ask another comic, I'm sure maybe someone has better advice.
00:24:27
Speaker
I'm not, you know, I really I'm a baby when it comes to the craft.
00:24:32
Speaker
But I think you got to find what works for you and then just come up and give it a go a few times.
00:24:38
Speaker
But remember to try to have fun with it.
00:24:40
Speaker
Too many comics, I feel like, take it over seriously or something or start getting in their heads about it.
00:24:46
Speaker
And any creative art or form requires you to have a certain amount of play involved with it.
00:24:51
Speaker
All right.
00:24:52
Speaker
So there's my wisdom.
00:24:55
Speaker
imparted as well.
00:24:57
Speaker
Things other than that are great.
00:24:59
Speaker
And I'm going to wrap up this episode now because you guys got to go wherever you were driving.
00:25:05
Speaker
You're probably almost there.
00:25:07
Speaker
And yeah, have a great day.
00:25:09
Speaker
See you on the next episode.
00:25:10
Speaker
Take care, people.
