Identity and Comedy: Salman Qureshi's Journey
00:00:00
Speaker
I grew up confused about my culture and identity and felt out of place most of the time until I found comedy, which forced me to be honest with myself and I realized mostly I'm just an expat brat.
Instant Fame and the Viral Phenomenon
00:00:13
Speaker
Welcome to my show.
00:00:14
Speaker
I'm Salman Qureshi.
00:00:16
Speaker
Alright everyone, Hawk 2.
00:00:19
Speaker
Alright, let's get this out of the way.
00:00:22
Speaker
Alright, if at this point you don't know what that meant, then you clearly don't spend enough time on the internet.
00:00:30
Speaker
Actually, you don't have to spend enough time on the internet.
00:00:32
Speaker
You just have to be like around the internet for like five seconds and you'll know what it means.
00:00:39
Speaker
And that's so interesting to me.
00:00:41
Speaker
This whole thing has just gone viral of this girl.
00:00:45
Speaker
I think her real name is Haley.
00:00:46
Speaker
And the whole thing that she... For five seconds, she's on camera for five, ten seconds where she says two lines.
00:00:54
Speaker
And now she's more famous than so many artists who have been...
00:01:00
Speaker
working at their craft for years now.
00:01:04
Speaker
All right, listen, listen, I'm not against her being famous and going viral.
00:01:10
Speaker
I think too many people, too many artists and too many comics particularly, they're always like cribbing about someone else having gone viral while they're working really hard on their craft and no one ever saw that.
00:01:22
Speaker
And it's always this sob story that you've got to get over about.
00:01:28
Speaker
In fact, if anything, it's actually a really cool kind of thing to look at.
00:01:35
Speaker
early on in the years ago, I would really sit there and wonder what the hell happened?
00:01:42
Speaker
Like, why does this stuff go viral?
00:01:44
Speaker
You're trying to figure it out.
00:01:45
Speaker
And then I think for me, one of the things that stands out and every artist should probably think about it is the fact that what we love about these moments is it's funny.
00:01:58
Speaker
But it's also just really, she's just like,
00:02:01
Speaker
unheld back she's just honest it's refreshing it doesn't look polished up and we love that kind of stuff that's the truth of it we're just so tired of people marketing stuff at us so much that when we watch these moments we're just captivated by it and I think that's the deep down reason why it goes so viral you can't manufacture this stuff well you could probably who knows
00:02:30
Speaker
If you've heard the Justin Bieber story, then you know that this stuff can be manufactured, actually, now that I speak out loud about it.
Artistic Integrity vs. Viral Success
00:02:38
Speaker
If you don't know the story, basically, his dad or one of his producers, if I remember the story correctly, they basically planted him as playing in the garage as an amateur kid and stuff like that.
00:02:52
Speaker
And so the video looked very homemade, but it was very designed to be like that, right?
00:02:58
Speaker
Hey, I just canceled my own point.
00:03:03
Speaker
But it doesn't take away.
00:03:04
Speaker
Look, this is what I want artists to take away from this, all right?
00:03:07
Speaker
So stop cribbing about it.
00:03:09
Speaker
It's too many of you online whining and going, why does this stuff go viral?
00:03:13
Speaker
You got to think about the fact.
00:03:15
Speaker
The next time you're putting out something,
00:03:18
Speaker
You've got to remind yourself, look, you don't know what people will love.
00:03:22
Speaker
And that's the beauty of art.
00:03:23
Speaker
That's the hardest thing as artists to get over is about just putting it out there.
00:03:30
Speaker
And then you don't know how people will react.
00:03:32
Speaker
Some people will love it.
00:03:33
Speaker
Some people will hate it.
00:03:35
Speaker
A lot of people might love it.
00:03:36
Speaker
No one might love it.
00:03:38
Speaker
You can't control that.
00:03:40
Speaker
It's out of your control.
00:03:42
Speaker
What you can do, what's in your control, is to do your bit.
00:03:47
Speaker
That's all you can do.
00:03:48
Speaker
You do your bit and your bit as a comic or whatever other art you form you're in.
00:03:54
Speaker
Anything creative, anything you're doing out there.
00:03:57
Speaker
Well, even if it's a report in a boring corporate job where you have to give something back to your boss and you're worried about how that report will look.
00:04:06
Speaker
I tell all of the same people the same thing.
00:04:09
Speaker
You got to just put it out there.
00:04:10
Speaker
Once you're done with it, once you've worked hard at it, whatever you could look at, just put it out there without worrying about how, what the impact will be at that point because it's out of your control.
00:04:24
Speaker
So next time when that little critic in your brain is like, I don't think this joke will work or I don't know if this piece will be taken well, put it out there and see.
00:04:35
Speaker
And you can always just, you know...
00:04:37
Speaker
Just wipe it off and move on.
The Allure and Pitfalls of Fame
00:04:41
Speaker
viral for the wrong reasons, it's still going viral.
00:04:43
Speaker
You got what you wanted, right?
00:04:45
Speaker
Which is, what is it?
00:04:46
Speaker
What's the old saying?
00:04:48
Speaker
No bad, nothing's bad.
00:04:50
Speaker
Well, my God, I'm forgetting the line.
00:04:52
Speaker
Is it no publicity is bad publicity or yeah, something like that, right?
00:04:58
Speaker
You get what I'm talking about.
00:04:59
Speaker
So just put it out there because when you look at certain artists, like there's another story I love is about Steve Martin.
00:05:07
Speaker
And if you're aware of his stand-up comedy in the 70s, he kind of changed it quite a lot because he was so different.
00:05:14
Speaker
It was against what everyone else was talking about.
00:05:17
Speaker
So when it was going through this phase of a lot of politics and whatnot, he had like –
00:05:23
Speaker
completely absurd, crazy, irrelevant stuff in his piece.
00:05:28
Speaker
And he started using props and whatnot.
00:05:32
Speaker
And it was a whole different kind of joke telling from the traditional stand-up stuff.
00:05:37
Speaker
And the story supposedly goes that what he said, something along the lines was,
00:05:45
Speaker
He didn't change his stuff for the audience.
00:05:49
Speaker
He just did his stuff and then his audience found him.
00:05:54
Speaker
He talks about how he just grew because people who liked that told other people who liked it and so his audience just kept building until he became this mega-finger.
00:06:03
Speaker
mega star and and I think that's it's hard to do it's easier to say it's hard to do as artists to kind of go okay I'm gonna keep doing what I like because we want instant gratification we want people to immediately start loving our stuff we want to in today's terms it's all about like I want to go viral immediately and I get why
00:06:27
Speaker
It just opens a lot more doors, right?
00:06:29
Speaker
So if you're famous, if you're known, you're bound to be gigging more.
00:06:35
Speaker
It's easier to get booked.
00:06:36
Speaker
It's easier to fly around.
00:06:38
Speaker
The whole lifestyle seems so much better.
00:06:45
Speaker
It's what everybody as an artist wants is more freedom to do what they want instead of doing awful gigs.
00:06:51
Speaker
And if it's written for you, you'll get there, right?
00:06:54
Speaker
I'm not so over the top about like destiny and stuff.
00:06:58
Speaker
I think you got to put out there.
00:06:59
Speaker
But at the same time.
00:07:01
Speaker
Yeah, you got to put it out there and see what happens.
00:07:03
Speaker
And if you become this next phenomena, this girl, I think people are so much better at handling fame.
00:07:09
Speaker
Like she's smart about it.
00:07:11
Speaker
Her friends rallied around her.
00:07:13
Speaker
Apparently, her hats have already sold for like $65,000.
00:07:17
Speaker
Like they're going for like $65,000.
00:07:19
Speaker
$30 to $50 depending on whether they're signed by her or not.
00:07:25
Speaker
People are remixing the stuff.
00:07:28
Speaker
You got to look at the fun side of these things as well instead of just constantly being self-obsessed and worrying about how it came out for you.
00:07:37
Speaker
Alright, it's not stuff I look out for, but when you see stuff like this happen, it's nice, it's cool.
00:07:44
Speaker
It's lovely how she's just kind of like doing it and people are like flocking to her and people are having fun.
00:07:52
Speaker
I've heard songs that are using it.
00:07:55
Speaker
She's kind of been remixed into things.
00:07:56
Speaker
People are using it as memes.
00:08:03
Speaker
At the same time, maybe it's not what you need.
00:08:06
Speaker
You think you need that, but it's not maybe what you need.
00:08:09
Speaker
Because with her particular thing, there's a certain type of crowd that's being attracted to as well.
00:08:15
Speaker
And I don't know if that makes everyone happy or whether 10 years down the line, you want to be known as the Hawk 2 person.
00:08:23
Speaker
Who knows how this plays out, right?
00:08:24
Speaker
We've seen it happen to extra fame with Michael Jackson and stuff.
00:08:29
Speaker
Whoa, that did not play out right, did it?
00:08:32
Speaker
For no one, for nobody, not even himself, right?
00:08:35
Speaker
He must have had this crazy, fun life for a long time.
00:08:38
Speaker
But man, towards the end, like people forget his last five, 10 years.
00:08:44
Speaker
Like where was he?
00:08:44
Speaker
He was like in Qatar, man, or Bahrain, sorry, in a tiny island, an insignificant island compared to the rest of the world in terms of people and money and whatever.
00:08:55
Speaker
So this guy who was the biggest thing in the world,
00:08:59
Speaker
spent a lot of his life towards the end on this tiny island.
00:09:03
Speaker
And that's really sad when you think about it.
00:09:05
Speaker
And I know he did horrible stuff, but yeah, fame does that to you.
00:09:09
Speaker
Fame is a crazy ass thing.
00:09:11
Speaker
I'm not defending his life and his actions, but I think everyone at that level of fame will have some crazy come out.
00:09:20
Speaker
His was a certain thing.
The Impact of Viral Fame
00:09:21
Speaker
I think you or me or anyone
00:09:25
Speaker
Anyone in this world with that amount of power and fame and feeling of invincibility will have some crazy type of thing come out of our lives.
00:09:34
Speaker
And again, I don't know if anyone even now with a lot more knowledge about it would be able to handle it, right?
00:09:41
Speaker
So yeah, just sit back and enjoy some of this, all right?
00:09:46
Speaker
It's quite fun to do.
00:09:47
Speaker
So yeah, that's a Hawk 2 moment for me, all right?
00:09:56
Speaker
It's mango season.
00:09:57
Speaker
How bad can the world be right now?
00:09:59
Speaker
I mean, it's going, it's burning away.
00:10:02
Speaker
Every, every place you look at it's on fire with the heat and stuff, but, uh, I'm doing stuff that's indoors.
Eddie Murphy and Hollywood's Creative Stagnation
00:10:10
Speaker
And, uh, and speaking of fame, I, I, I just checked out the new Beverly Hill cops movie, Eddie Murphy.
00:10:19
Speaker
I was kind of excited about it until I watched it.
00:10:24
Speaker
I was excited, but I also went in with very low expectations.
00:10:28
Speaker
Yeah, I really did.
00:10:29
Speaker
Because I don't know.
00:10:31
Speaker
The guy, you know, it's funny how this is another dude.
00:10:35
Speaker
Too much fame, right?
00:10:36
Speaker
It's funny how he shot to fame.
00:10:40
Speaker
doing stuff that was so out there, crazy, risky, risque, whatever you want to call it.
00:10:47
Speaker
You know, he was just a trailblazer.
00:10:50
Speaker
And then since the 90s, his career just is weird.
00:10:54
Speaker
It's been up and down.
00:10:55
Speaker
There have been some good moments.
00:10:58
Speaker
I still love Eddie.
00:11:00
Speaker
But he's so safe now.
00:11:03
Speaker
I don't mean his humor per se.
00:11:06
Speaker
They've just become so safe.
00:11:08
Speaker
It's a sad thing to see.
00:11:10
Speaker
I watched this movie and I thought there would be something in it.
00:11:12
Speaker
There must be some reason why he's gone after all these years.
00:11:16
Speaker
He's like, I'm going to do this.
00:11:19
Speaker
And so I watched it, but I also was expecting some Hollywood tropes and stuff.
00:11:24
Speaker
And they didn't disappoint on that front.
00:11:27
Speaker
If you want to just watch a casual action movie, it's not the worst thing in the world.
00:11:32
Speaker
And if you're a fan of Eddie Murphy, it's still... I don't know how I feel about it.
00:11:37
Speaker
I think, you know, it's still good.
00:11:41
Speaker
But they just... The movie is just so... It's so dull.
00:11:45
Speaker
That's what it is, you know?
00:11:49
Speaker
There's like nothing in it that makes you go, why did he like, I don't know, like come out of Axel retirement of playing this character and go, yeah, let's make this one happen.
00:12:02
Speaker
I mean, I would have thought it would be a great script or some new angle or something that was so wonderful that it made him go,
00:12:10
Speaker
I want to do this movie again.
00:12:12
Speaker
And it just seems more like maybe it's a paycheck thing.
00:12:16
Speaker
That's all it is then, which is fine.
00:12:18
Speaker
I don't judge people for it.
00:12:19
Speaker
Hey, I would do a lot more for a lot less of a paycheck compared to what he gets.
00:12:28
Speaker
But he is still sad, you know, because I look the movies like they're doing the same tropey shit that's going on in all these kind of movies that are being made after a 10, 20 year gap.
00:12:40
Speaker
And it's always one of the kids involved of the main character, a younger one, maybe to pass the torch on.
00:12:46
Speaker
That's what they're thinking.
00:12:49
Speaker
It's a little bit more diverse.
00:12:50
Speaker
So it's a daughter, not a son.
00:12:53
Speaker
You know, they're checking the boxes.
00:12:56
Speaker
There's one white actor in there as well.
00:12:58
Speaker
That's the boyfriend.
00:13:00
Speaker
Maybe the son and maybe the daughter and the new son-in-law, maybe they'll take care.
00:13:05
Speaker
Beverly Hill cops to the next thing.
00:13:09
Speaker
And maybe that's the plan if if this gets well received.
00:13:13
Speaker
But the movie itself, like Eddie, first of all, it's like his character has developed.
00:13:17
Speaker
That's the problem with it.
00:13:19
Speaker
He's actually developed into an older, slightly more mature guy, which is.
00:13:25
Speaker
which is, you know, in terms of character development, I guess that's, it's kind of spot on.
00:13:31
Speaker
But it's also this weird thing of like going, well, I'm not interested in this boring character.
00:13:37
Speaker
I love this movie.
00:13:38
Speaker
And the way the reason stood out against all the other action movies and stuff was because Eddie Murphy was just this street smart and he still is kind of
00:13:49
Speaker
You got to watch it.
00:13:50
Speaker
Maybe I'm forgetting how good the previous three movies were.
00:13:54
Speaker
It's been a while.
00:13:55
Speaker
I haven't rewatched them in ages.
00:13:57
Speaker
And I don't know how well they might have aged, how well his stuff was.
00:14:04
Speaker
I kind of remember as being pretty good and that's why it stood out.
00:14:07
Speaker
And instead, you know, this one is just like a dull guy.
00:14:11
Speaker
Sometimes he just looks slow.
00:14:14
Speaker
And I'm like, of all the things he wanted to redo or do again, like this is...
00:14:19
Speaker
Unless he wanted to like really go Tom Cruise and get fit and do crazy stunts at 60.
00:14:25
Speaker
I don't see what the appeal was for him to do this.
00:14:31
Speaker
How much did he pay for this?
00:14:32
Speaker
That's what I want to know.
00:14:33
Speaker
And so the movie, the whole, the other problem is there's no story.
00:14:37
Speaker
The story is like, if he was so electrifying as he was when he was younger in these kind of roles, then I think the story...
00:14:45
Speaker
I wouldn't mind it as much because he, you know, people like him just make you want to watch the film.
00:14:50
Speaker
But instead, you do need a story with this one.
00:14:54
Speaker
And it's dull as hell.
00:14:55
Speaker
It's like run of the mill stuff.
00:14:57
Speaker
It's a bit of action.
00:14:59
Speaker
And there's no suspense or twist or anything of that.
00:15:01
Speaker
I thought maybe something like that might save the movie a little bit.
00:15:04
Speaker
But you immediately know.
00:15:05
Speaker
And this is this isn't a what you call it.
00:15:10
Speaker
I don't need to do a disclaimer of like this is a reveal or whatever.
00:15:14
Speaker
you immediately know Kevin Bacon's character is the villain, right?
00:15:18
Speaker
Like, I'm not saying it like I was so smart, I guessed it.
00:15:24
Speaker
And it's revealed in like five minutes of introducing his character anyway.
00:15:28
Speaker
It's confirmed, right?
00:15:30
Speaker
So I look at it and go, I really thought there's going to be a bigger twist at the end, but there isn't.
00:15:37
Speaker
It's just him and Eddie at it and they get through and so be it.
00:15:42
Speaker
I think there's just one very engaging scene is when his daughter's about to be killed early on in the movie.
00:15:51
Speaker
And that was one kind of like freaky scene that made you go, oh my God.
00:15:56
Speaker
Other than that, the whole movie just flew by.
00:15:58
Speaker
And I was like, it's over.
00:16:01
Speaker
There's nothing else left?
00:16:03
Speaker
And I just sat there and thought, why did they do this?
00:16:09
Speaker
Did everyone come out of retirement to do this script?
00:16:12
Speaker
They could have, you know, what would be more interesting is to just take a random person in the world, any random person and read their internet history.
00:16:21
Speaker
Even that like is generally quite entertaining anyway.
00:16:24
Speaker
So maybe it's a bad example.
00:16:25
Speaker
Like read their choices of food delivery.
00:16:29
Speaker
Look up their food delivery apps and look up at the restaurants that they've ordered and the dishes they've ordered.
00:16:34
Speaker
I think that would have been more interesting than this actual script.
00:16:38
Speaker
And it's really sad.
00:16:43
Speaker
I hope they don't make any more of these.
00:16:45
Speaker
I hope they don't go the route of like the Terminator movies where they went after the second one.
00:16:50
Speaker
They should have just stopped, right?
00:16:52
Speaker
But they went, no, let's make a third one.
00:16:54
Speaker
And the third one's horrible.
00:16:55
Speaker
And they go, no, no, no.
00:16:57
Speaker
We'll make another one to fix this.
00:17:00
Speaker
Then they bring in
00:17:01
Speaker
James Cameron himself and the original I can't remember the actress's name now they bring Sarah Connor back you know they're like let's make this shit happen they bring Arnold they bring AI generated stuff so he looks younger and it's still crap and I'm not surprised they're still trying to make one more and I just hope these kind of movies like Beverly Hills I don't think they have the legs or the hope or the fan base to even have another go um
00:17:33
Speaker
It's one of those films you go, it's not bad.
00:17:35
Speaker
You know what I'm really angry about, though, is Eddie Murphy saying, like, there was this rumor, was it around 2020, around the COVID time, just after or before?
00:17:45
Speaker
And there were rumors that he'd been hitting a few stand-up clubs, drop-ins, and potentially was working on a special.
00:17:56
Speaker
That is the kind of stuff I want to see.
00:17:58
Speaker
That's the kind of thing that would make me go, damn, Eddie's really putting his neck out.
00:18:04
Speaker
Because stand-up, to try to match those two first specials would be such a big risk.
00:18:11
Speaker
But that's what would make it really great.
00:18:15
Speaker
He's scared of it.
00:18:16
Speaker
He is because he said something along the lines of he made some other shit up about how once you've achieved this, then going back to stand up is like going back to basics of something.
00:18:25
Speaker
The way he framed it, he made it sound like it's beneath him now to have to go back down to doing stand up.
00:18:30
Speaker
And I just so strongly disagree with that because.
00:18:35
Speaker
I think, like I said, that would have been the risky move.
00:18:38
Speaker
That would have been the place where he'd grow again as an artist and probably acquired new fans as well.
00:18:46
Speaker
And there's so much material he'd have.
00:18:48
Speaker
So unless he's hiding it and he's actually going to surprise us very soon with it, I think he's kind of backed off from that idea.
00:18:57
Speaker
He's this old dude who's scared of failing now.
00:19:01
Speaker
And that's not fun.
00:19:02
Speaker
That's not Eddie Murphy.
00:19:04
Speaker
And that's the sad bit that he's not making that choice.
00:19:09
Speaker
And I hope when I watch these guys, I just go, I'm never going to be at their fame level or anything.
00:19:15
Speaker
But I just hope as an artist, just as an artist, I don't fall into that trap.
00:19:20
Speaker
I'm sympathetic to it because I was actually like looking at my own stuff sometimes.
00:19:25
Speaker
And I know I've always stalled.
00:19:27
Speaker
And their fame is so much more, right?
00:19:29
Speaker
So disclaimer again, like I'm not comparing myself in whatsoever.
00:19:34
Speaker
In fact, I was very humbled recently on an Instagram post.
00:19:37
Speaker
Someone added me and messaged me after a show and said, hey, watching you was really great.
00:19:42
Speaker
It had such a profound impact, some shit like that.
00:19:46
Speaker
And then went, I've never heard of you, but this was great.
00:19:49
Speaker
I've been doing comedy for more than a decade, over a decade, closer to 15 years or something.
00:19:56
Speaker
And I'm still listening to this stuff.
00:19:58
Speaker
So I'm not comparing myself to Eddie Murphy in that sense.
00:20:02
Speaker
But I do get that comfort level as an artist because every time
00:20:06
Speaker
I do have a night like that or I have a few great shows.
00:20:10
Speaker
This part of me wants to fall back into safety, wants to kind of go, I don't want to do too many gigs and fail in front of people again.
00:20:19
Speaker
How do I stay here?
00:20:20
Speaker
That's the, in modern times, that's the biggest threat to you as an artist.
00:20:25
Speaker
And I still get that frustration.
00:20:27
Speaker
Feeling in the back of my head, in my brain, this voice just kind of going, hey, listen, you know, this is just back off, do your best stuff and maybe don't go to the same places too often.
00:20:42
Speaker
What are you going to do?
00:20:43
Speaker
People will be disappointed to see you again.
00:20:45
Speaker
You don't want to disappoint your five fans who do know you.
00:20:49
Speaker
They don't really remember your name, but they know you.
00:20:53
Speaker
So when you're at his level of fame, I suppose that voice might get stronger.
00:21:00
Speaker
And that's a shame.
00:21:01
Speaker
So I just kind of, you know, I look at these stories and kind of remind myself like I got to...
00:21:05
Speaker
I got to not become so safe in whatever I do, artistically at least.
00:21:13
Speaker
Maybe life as well.
00:21:14
Speaker
You have to find this balance of doing stuff and then taking some risk to grow.
00:21:22
Speaker
And it's tricky as you get older and more comfortable with some luxuries and stuff.
00:21:28
Speaker
And you're like, why do I need to rock the boat?
00:21:31
Speaker
but I don't want to become dull, you know?
When Should Artists Step Away?
00:21:35
Speaker
yeah, it's a good reminder.
00:21:36
Speaker
I mean, I see too many.
00:21:38
Speaker
Otherwise, you become like these old artists and some of you might not know or may have heard of this Bollywood guy, for example, Amitabh Bachchan, huge star from India.
00:21:47
Speaker
I was a big fan of him as well, but the more he ages, and this is my thing with like all older people, Clint Eastwood, everybody.
00:21:55
Speaker
I think at some point,
00:21:57
Speaker
You got to put them away from the limelight for their own sake so that people remember them fondly.
00:22:04
Speaker
We just had another older dude.
00:22:07
Speaker
The Sandman guy, Neil Gaiman.
00:22:10
Speaker
With all the stuff.
00:22:13
Speaker
Like he deserves to be outed.
00:22:14
Speaker
And I just look at this stuff and I go, oh, man, at some point we should have packed them away.
00:22:20
Speaker
There are enough of those examples.
00:22:22
Speaker
But what age is that?
00:22:23
Speaker
When's the right time?
00:22:24
Speaker
I just don't know.
00:22:25
Speaker
But with this guy particularly, this Indian actor, my problem with him is he's gone so far right.
00:22:31
Speaker
You know, he's just become this weird spokesman for the whole new Indian whole thing of like extremism and stuff.
00:22:43
Speaker
And it's really sad because, you know, he has fans or had fans all over the world who loved his stuff.
00:22:51
Speaker
But now I can't stand him talking about some things.
00:22:54
Speaker
Like he goes off on about language and this and that.
00:22:57
Speaker
And this is after his dad's a poet.
00:23:00
Speaker
And I just look at this guy and I'm like, man, some of your best dialogues were written by other religious, by writers that were from other religions and use Urdu over Hindi and stuff.
00:23:11
Speaker
And those are things you remember foremost, the dialogues you delivered.
00:23:18
Speaker
It's just, you know, pack these guys away, man.
00:23:22
Speaker
And God help me if I ever go down that route.
00:23:26
Speaker
So that's the price of fame.
00:23:29
Speaker
At some point, the Hawk 2 lady is hope she doesn't become a prude and go the other way either.
00:23:38
Speaker
That's fame, people.
