00:00:57
snowjobspodcast
How are we doing? Good. All right. Yeah, the Vikings ah beat up on a Pop Warner team from New York tonight or today. Nice.
00:01:09
snowjobspodcast

That would be great.
00:01:34
snowjobspodcast
I'm calling the shot.
00:01:35
RICK JAMES
That would be great.
00:01:35
Steve Smythe
Nope.
00:01:37
snowjobspodcast
Calling it calling it but tonight guys we are here to record a special episode. All right, ah we're doing something great ah We're gonna talk about it. Some of you know about it. If you were at Simon you were at the launch party And some of you don't and we didn't really get fully into we touched on it on an episode for about two or three minutes ah So we wanted to come on make sure everybody knows all the details and what's coming at you this winter All right, so to do that with us is We're bringing Steve Spife and Jordan Smith from Storm Equipment.
00:02:10
snowjobspodcast
Our collaborators, our partners in elevation of the industry. They're always looking to ah to do positive change in the industry and bring guys closer together and and help educate them.
00:02:21
snowjobspodcast
So boys, how are we doing?
00:02:24
Steve Smythe
Doing doing great weekend.
00:02:24
Jordan Smith
Great.
00:02:26
snowjobspodcast
Good, good. So storm chasing, right? Or storm chasing with the snow jobs is coming this winter. All right. Let's talk about it. All right. What is the idea? How did, how did we come up with it? You know, what are we going to do? Why don't you guys take us? We've talked about it enough. You guys take us through it.
00:02:45
Steve Smythe
Well, we came up with it. We just we thought there's a need for it. Years ago, there was a ProTech had one, um ah Operation Snow Fighter, it was called.
00:02:55
Steve Smythe
And it was this, man, I still watch a thing a couple of times a season, get jacked up.
00:02:59
snowjobspodcast
Do you really?
00:03:00
Steve Smythe
I do. i next I just watch it.
00:03:01
snowjobspodcast
It's awful.
00:03:04
Steve Smythe
I watch it because there's a guy from Fargo on there.
00:03:06
RICK JAMES
no
00:03:07
Steve Smythe
And I keep looking to see like the early version of Jeremy driving by in the background. And I'm just looking.
00:03:12
RICK JAMES
that was the guy That was the guy I hired to run that place after I left it.
00:03:16
Steve Smythe
Here we go.
00:03:18
snowjobspodcast
I didn't mean to say it's awful.
00:03:18
RICK JAMES
It was. It was. It was.
00:03:19
snowjobspodcast
It's dated.
00:03:20
RICK JAMES
I'm not lying. I'm not lying. He was my was my number two.
00:03:21
Steve Smythe
Anyway, that's why I was looking out. Now I got some backstory, dude. I should have asked this like 10 years ago, maybe saved me a few episodes, but um there's just a need for it. I think there's our industry is so, in my opinion, is so overlooked. It's nicest to showcase. We all see on LinkedIn and social media platforms and whatnot, you always see the owners, the the kind of the head head guys of the companies.
00:03:49
Steve Smythe
um I wouldn't say taking a spotlight, but they're the ones that are out you know on the social media platforms. And the guys that are boots on the ground, you know the sidewalk crews, the the guys that are out loading salt and loading brine the night before and making brine, they're not really showing as much.
00:04:09
Steve Smythe
We all we all we all know, because we work with them hand and hand.
00:04:12
snowjobspodcast
Those are the real characters.
00:04:14
Steve Smythe
Yeah, though those are like those are the heroes in what we do, in my opinion.
00:04:17
snowjobspodcast
Absolutely.
00:04:17
RICK JAMES
There's a backbone.
00:04:18
snowjobspodcast
And they're all characters.
00:04:19
Steve Smythe
Yes.
00:04:19
RICK JAMES
They're all backbone.
00:04:19
Steve Smythe
Yes. They're all different characters and whatnot. And just to kind of like bring them to the front light. That's, that's, that's my thoughts on this.
00:04:26
snowjobspodcast
It's 100% accurate.
00:04:28
RICK JAMES
Mhm.
00:04:28
snowjobspodcast
it's a hundred percent did you Did you see the Muppets reel we put out the other day? The meeting with the with all the Muppets? That's 100% true. There are so many characters in every snow company. you got It's like Noah's Ark.
00:04:40
snowjobspodcast
You got two of everything in every snow company. And it's really funny. And why wouldn't you want to bring attention to to those kind of guys that are doing that kind of work and they're having a great time doing it?
00:04:47
Steve Smythe
ni
00:04:49
RICK JAMES
oh god yeah
00:04:51
RICK JAMES
um
00:04:51
Jordan Smith
Yeah.
00:04:51
Jordan Smith
And I think, I think the other thing is, you know, Steve, you nailed it, but on top of that, like when you look at social media, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, whatever, you see the highlight reels, you see the flashy stuff, the lights, the, the, the slow-mo, the snow flying perfectly at the camera, like, and that that's cool.
00:05:11
Jordan Smith
There's going to be some of that kind of stuff in storm chasing because people like that stuff.
00:05:13
RICK JAMES
Oh, God, yeah.
00:05:15
Jordan Smith
But you don't necessarily see all this stuff on the back end, all the all the planning. You don't see some of the problems that happen. You don't see the breakdowns. um you knowt You don't see the full reality. And we've all gone through it. And I think that it's going to be really valuable for the industry, again, not not only to highlight the boots on the ground teams, but also to highlight the challenges that we actually face because
00:05:38
Steve Smythe
Thank you.
00:05:38
Jordan Smith
I think they're, this is social media in general, not just the snow industry, but social media. The propensity is let's show all the cool stuff. Let's show off. Let's maybe exaggerate a little bit how things actually are. And I think people get sick of that. They want to see the reality. And I think it's really relatable and real and And it'll be a lot of fun to see all the way through a storm from kind of the pre-storm planning into some of the cool footage of plowing snow, you know, highlight some of the issues, the characters for sure. And then after the snow is done, like how did things go? What went good? What, what didn't? What are we going to do better next time? Like that's where there's a lot of learning opportunity here in my mind.
00:06:15
snowjobspodcast
I think it's going to be real educational because you're going to have the pre-storm stuff, the pre-storm meetings, the preparation, the planning, and like you said, the routes, ah what tactics and stuff they use. How do they dispatch their guys?
00:06:26
snowjobspodcast
do they you know What are they doing in that 24-hour lead up? Everybody's doing it a little bit differently. So guys will be able to pick up things here and there from how different companies are doing it. So I think it's going to be very educational for guys.
00:06:39
Jordan Smith
One.
00:06:39
snowjobspodcast
That's what it's all about.
00:06:39
RICK JAMES
yeah we'll get to we'll get to see the callouts and all that fun stuff like you all the guys coming through the shops and all that If they don't come to shop, if it happens, we'll go to their house and get them too.
00:06:48
snowjobspodcast
Jeremy will go to the houses. He provides that service.
00:06:50
Steve Smythe
We'll be, we'll be pounding on the door and you name it.
00:06:50
RICK JAMES
ah Been there, done that.
00:06:53
Steve Smythe
But this'll, this'll be awesome just for the snow, our snow community to watch.
00:06:53
snowjobspodcast
On camera.
00:06:54
RICK JAMES
i
00:06:58
Steve Smythe
But I also think like, you know, big, bigger picture, like the property management companies and the building owners and stuff to see kind of what actually goes on behind the scenes, you know, that 10 o'clock at night to 6 a.m.
00:07:10
Steve Smythe
or 5 a.m. when everybody else is under covers and we're out in the worst possible worst conditions ever, you know, to be out.
00:07:17
snowjobspodcast
yeah
00:07:18
Steve Smythe
And then like Jordan was saying, there's breakdowns, you know, you got a couple of loaders that gel up or whatever, and just trying to play the game of chess to have everybody opened up by that, you know, by that morning, morning rush into work. I think it could be a good eye opener for, for some of these people in this, you know, it'll show them why there's a, you know, for equipment in some places, you know, the redundancies of why we have extra equipment kind of staged around and just stuff people don't see, uh, on LinkedIn and Facebook and stuff today.
00:07:36
snowjobspodcast
Absolutely.
00:07:48
snowjobspodcast
absolutely and you And you show the good and the bad. And the the companies that are going to be on it are going to be OK with that. you know You show the breakdowns. You show that what what you have to overcome in the course of you know doing a normal a normal storm that we all go through.
00:08:02
RICK JAMES
others there's really not that there's serger no you go ahead
00:08:02
snowjobspodcast
So I think it's i think you're right.
00:08:04
snowjobspodcast
I think it's gonna educate people outside the snow industry that rely on us for service, but maybe don't understand all that goes into it.
00:08:11
Jordan Smith
Well, yeah, and I love that. Oh, sorry, Jeremy. I love that part of it because I think we're we're so close to the snow industry. All of us that are in the snow industry and have been in for a long time, we're so close to it. We don't realize that we know what we know.
00:08:26
Jordan Smith
um There's a lot of people that truly have no idea how their parking lot is cleared in the morning.
00:08:29
snowjobspodcast
No idea.
00:08:31
Jordan Smith
They just, they get to work or they get on the road and it's good to go. And I think for people that have been doing it for a long time, that have family members or friends that just don't understand what they do, instead of trying to spend hours explaining, explaining why they're insane and do this job, they can just send them an episode of storm chase.
00:08:47
Jordan Smith
And then, uh, you know, the more attention we can draw to this industry, the better it's going to be for our industry, because now we'll get the kind of respect that we deserve for the work that we do.
00:08:55
snowjobspodcast
Amen.
00:08:56
RICK JAMES
agree
00:08:57
Steve Smythe
100%.
00:08:59
RICK JAMES
there
00:08:59
snowjobspodcast
What'd you have, Jack?
00:09:00
RICK JAMES
um' just go say that there's nothing i mean we're gonna show everything there's like like we said there's nothing to hide we have nothing to hide mean ah sights a sight we're gonna push the smell it is what it is there's there's nothing to hide in the snow industry we all we are might have different ways to do it but at the end of the day at the end of the night, it's all done, snow's in a pile, and hopefully the lot is bare. So, I mean, it's just how you're gonna get there. So, I don't know, it's just really, I don't think there's there's no secrets about it really.
00:09:26
RICK JAMES
I agree.
00:09:27
snowjobspodcast
Amen.
00:09:27
Jordan Smith
Well, and I think another thing I really like about it, I mean, you know, we're not we're not totally reinventing the wheel here. So the podcast has clearly proven that there's a certain format that you guys use that people like you kind of walk through, you know, like, like, what kind of equipment do you use? What kind of software do you use? What?
00:09:47
Jordan Smith
What's unique about your company? ah where Where do you think you're going? You know, what does your facility look like? What does your salt bin look like? We can take the format the show's already been using with great success and we can show it in video too, right?
00:09:58
Jordan Smith
I mean, if it's great in audio, it's going to be great in video.
00:09:58
snowjobspodcast
Yep.
00:09:59
RICK JAMES
oh yeah
00:10:01
Jordan Smith
We're not totally reinventing the wheel. And then taking that a step further, like if you look at popular television, these docu-series shows are like some of the most popular shows on TV.
00:10:09
RICK JAMES
Oh yeah.
00:10:12
Jordan Smith
So you think about like A Deadliest Catch or a Dirty Jobs or some of these other Discovery Channel gold rush, right?
00:10:17
snowjobspodcast
Gold Rush, ridiculous show.
00:10:17
Steve Smythe
OK.
00:10:18
RICK JAMES
I love gold dress.
00:10:19
Jordan Smith
It is ridiculous.
00:10:19
RICK JAMES
I love that.
00:10:20
Steve Smythe
Yeah.
00:10:20
Jordan Smith
And and some of what we what we do might be ridiculous, but the the format works.
00:10:21
RICK JAMES
ah so
00:10:25
Jordan Smith
It's engaging, it's entertaining, but it's also educational because Again, like the podcast where people get a ton of value just by hearing how other guys are doing stuff. Now they can watch how other guys are doing stuff.
00:10:36
snowjobspodcast
Yup.
00:10:38
Jordan Smith
It's it's it's really kind of a copy paste in video format. um That's really what it is.
00:10:42
RICK JAMES
Mm
00:10:45
Jordan Smith
I mean, I'm super excited for it.
00:10:45
snowjobspodcast
Absolutely. I think it'll be great. And we have a, now we're not doing this ourselves. Do you want to elaborate on like professionals that we brought in? So, you know, we're not filming this on iPhones and, and a couple of GoPros here with a 10 year old kid holding the camera.
00:11:01
snowjobspodcast
ah You want to take us through ah the professionals that we have involved now to do it.
00:11:04
RICK JAMES
hmm.
00:11:05
Steve Smythe
Yeah, we have ah we have a media team that will be going going to these different companies with us when when it snows and setting up production. And they have staff um cameras. you know It'll be pretty sweet. um they're They're super excited. We've been talking a lot with them. And had just actually, we're down at the at one of our yards looking at equipment for just camera mounting spots. So super exciting.
00:11:30
Jordan Smith
Yeah, I mean, so yeah, it's it's a professional media team, um you know, and we, butre we're going to be learning on the fly here too, just being real, like we think we'll have enough resources between having these professional camera sound and lighting people, and then supplementing that with, you know, your typical GoPros on some of the loaders.
00:11:49
Jordan Smith
um you know, some supplementary footage from some of the snow jobs and and storm team members that will be on site for all these shoots. Like we think we'll have all the right stuff, but we're going to elevate this thing until we do. So we think we have enough for this year. We got some professionals involved. I should also mention and give a shout out to um Joshua Brecht from ECF media has agreed to, to, to help with this process. He doesn't necessarily know if he can come physically to all of the shoots.
00:12:16
Jordan Smith
But from a directive standpoint, a lot of you have probably seen ECF media. It is kind of the gold standard and in the industry in terms of professional quality media. And he is excited to be a part of this and help. He sends me messages regularly about ideas he's had or or concepts he wants to use. So it'll be exciting to have, have Josh as sort of ah a pseudo ah Steven Spielberg director type type guy on staff for this thing too.
00:12:43
snowjobspodcast
Very cool.
00:12:44
Steve Smythe
Yeah. And they are, they are so, they are so on point when I was out, uh, got, got to play out in Pennsylvania and run a loader and and that decent snow and Josh and his crew were out there and it was just so cool to see. And how he knew like what camera angles to get. And it was, it was sweet.
00:13:02
snowjobspodcast
Yeah, I don't have that in me.
00:13:02
Jordan Smith
Yeah.
00:13:04
snowjobspodcast
I don't know all that. I don't. It's something like they these guys that do this stuff. It's it's amazing how they know what something is going to look at look like on film, you know, from a different angle with a different shutter speed with, ah you know, it's like all sorts of stuff.
00:13:19
snowjobspodcast
I have no clue. I'm lucky I can press record on this podcast and get it done.
00:13:23
RICK JAMES
ah
00:13:23
snowjobspodcast
But, you know, those guys are really amazing at what they do. And that's why they're professionals it's gonna be great to be involved with them and can't wait to see it as far as you know we talked about what we want the thing to be as far as making our world smaller like making snow guys we say it all the time like you're not alone out there There's tons of us doing the same thing, but everybody seems to always feel like they're they're the only one. And that's the one thing we keep hearing about the Snow Jobs community around the show is that everybody now is networking a lot more. They're they're reaching out, they're taking chances and talking amongst themselves. And that's going to be a big perk of this is you're going to, we're going to introduce a whole audience to six different companies.
00:14:08
snowjobspodcast
and show them if they're not aware of who's working there and how they're doing things or not even aware of the companies. I mean, from this list, it's ah you'd have to be living under a rock and snow to not know these six companies.
00:14:19
snowjobspodcast
But you know that that's a really big win for six companies and for the guys watching as well. yeah If you can't learn something from those six companies, then ah you know don't I don't know if you need to be doing this this job anymore.
00:14:34
Jordan Smith
Yeah, I think we, I'm excited.
00:14:34
snowjobspodcast
It was good.
00:14:36
Jordan Smith
You know, ah obviously the hope is that this goes well enough where we'll do season after season, but the logistics of, I think the reason this hasn't been done since project snow fighter, which was what, like 13, 14 years ago, is that sound about right?
00:14:50
snowjobspodcast
Wow.
00:14:51
Steve Smythe
Yeah, that's about right.
00:14:51
RICK JAMES
Yeah, been
00:14:52
Jordan Smith
It's a long time ago. ah The reason this hasn't been done is because it's freaking challenging to coordinate when it's going to snow because no one can actually plan when it's going to snow. They can say it's going to snow. We can show up there. We can fly all these people in to wherever in the country we are at that time and the snow can miss and we're you know starting back at zero.
00:15:12
Jordan Smith
But we tried to pick you know six unique regions, six unique types of companies ah to get a wide variety, um different size companies, different different types of organizations. And then again, specifically in different regions of the country, part of the reason for different regions is because conditions vary. But part of the reason too is we need to be able to have all these different regions on call because one of them might not get snow for two months and we got to pivot somewhere else.
00:15:39
Jordan Smith
So I don't know, ah Steve, if you want to just kind of talk through the companies we're planning to highlight for season one, I think that'd be kind of cool.
00:15:39
snowjobspodcast
yep
00:15:40
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:15:47
Steve Smythe
Yeah, I'll go through the list. Uh, this, this order that I'm reading off is not necessarily the order. Cause we just have to wait and see for snow. But, uh, uh, the first one we were hoping to kick off with was be with, uh, with Rick James himself up at Glacier up in North Dakota.
00:16:01
snowjobspodcast
Yup. Glacier.
00:16:03
Steve Smythe
Good chance with the cold weather up there.
00:16:04
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
00:16:05
Steve Smythe
They might be the one of the first ones to get snow. So that would be super, super cool. It was super unique for me when I got to go up there with those guys during that snowfall, how they operate and. run out of there.
00:16:16
Steve Smythe
I think people would be super impressed with that.
00:16:18
snowjobspodcast
Gotta go on a Wednesday though.
00:16:19
RICK JAMES
Yeah, we know Wednesday.
00:16:19
Steve Smythe
Well, well yeah, you either go, you get to call it Tuesday and then you come in for cleanup and you get wiener Wednesday.
00:16:20
snowjobspodcast
We gotta film them on on Wiener Wednesday.
00:16:26
Steve Smythe
That was, that was, that was actually the highlight of my trip to that.
00:16:29
Steve Smythe
So, up to trips and having wiener Wednesday.
00:16:29
snowjobspodcast
Touching tips on Wiener Wednesday.
00:16:31
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:16:32
Steve Smythe
I mean, it doesn't get any better than that.
00:16:34
RICK JAMES
yeah Well, the character ah characters we got here, there's nothing there.
00:16:39
snowjobspodcast
Oh, that, let let me tell you, you better watch out because Glacier might end up doing a spinoff all on their own after that episode. Cause they do have some serious characters.
00:16:48
Steve Smythe
the characters and then we'll we key in the live chat here a little bit too. and we i doing
00:16:54
snowjobspodcast
but the
00:16:54
Steve Smythe
yeah It'll be a good time. And then, uh, uh, the second one, um, uh, curbside in the twin cities Metro area. You guys have had them on your show.
00:17:02
Steve Smythe
Uh, great shirtless Al shirtless.
00:17:02
snowjobspodcast
Big Al.
00:17:03
RICK JAMES
they fun guys yeah so I got
00:17:06
Steve Smythe
out Um, Matt, Matt and those guys over there. I mean, just a great group of guys. Um, I've known on those guys for quite a few years or look quite basically when they started, we all started kind of doing it together, but same timeframe, but.
00:17:06
snowjobspodcast
Love Al.
00:17:20
Steve Smythe
Just a great group of guys and they got some characters there, some guys that I've worked with in the past and it'll be awesome.
00:17:23
RICK JAMES
Yeah they do. i got I got to hang out with them on Mankato. and but they were yeah yeah It was a and was like fun time.
00:17:28
Steve Smythe
Yeah, yeah.
00:17:29
snowjobspodcast
Yeah, they had quite the crew. They they've run a lot of guys.
00:17:32
Steve Smythe
yeah
00:17:33
RICK JAMES
Those guys are good good dudes and they like to have fun.
00:17:35
snowjobspodcast
They're good dudes. Very good dudes.
00:17:36
RICK JAMES
I could tell you that much.
00:17:38
Steve Smythe
So that'll be, that'll be fun. There'll be a lot of personalities there and uni, it'll be unique. So, uh,
00:17:43
Jordan Smith
Well, and they should mention they, they also, uh, they got some cool sites, like specifically we talked about the Vikings earlier, or they service the Vikings practice training facility, um, TC performance.
00:17:53
snowjobspodcast
Mm hmm.
00:17:55
Jordan Smith
I think it's called something like that. Like it's a, it's a really cool facility. So hopefully we can do some shots there. Cause it's the place of suite.
00:18:01
Steve Smythe
Yep, they're working on that currently right now just to see for logistics with the the logos and stuff So we should know on that shortly, but it's yeah in the in the guys that are over there There's some characters that flow at that site.
00:18:02
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:18:08
Jordan Smith
Yep.
00:18:13
Steve Smythe
So it'll be awesome ah third one UDM maintenance Kyle
00:18:15
snowjobspodcast
Cool.
00:18:19
Steve Smythe
He won our on our raffle on our giveaways Kyle was one of the ones that or was the one that got picked for that So I see Kyle quite a bit on social media and whatnot and this seems like a just a fireball of a go-getter So it'll be fun to see Kyle out there with his crew.
00:18:19
RICK JAMES
Now, Martin.
00:18:34
RICK JAMES
hes a good guy
00:18:36
Steve Smythe
So I can't wait for that Cleveland area correct.
00:18:38
Jordan Smith
And they're out in the Cleveland area, right, Steve?
00:18:40
RICK JAMES
you know
00:18:41
Jordan Smith
Cleveland, Ohio, yep.
00:18:41
Steve Smythe
Yep, Cleveland area and then then we have ODP um Mike and Deegan, I get to meet with those guys actually on, uh, on Wednesday this week, I get to take a tour of their shop and we're going to talk a little bit about the storm chasing and whatnot.
00:18:56
Steve Smythe
So I'm super pumped about that. And you guys haven't heard about ODP. I mean, all the stuff they do on the East coast out there is pretty, pretty impressive.
00:19:02
RICK JAMES
He's a good guy.
00:19:04
Steve Smythe
I just seen some pictures come through on social media tonight and it's like, man, they got some iron out there.
00:19:04
RICK JAMES
and they're
00:19:08
Steve Smythe
So that'll be okay.
00:19:08
snowjobspodcast
I think they're the single largest holder of Ventrac equipment in the country.
00:19:12
RICK JAMES
in Altor Pride and they're in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
00:19:14
snowjobspodcast
Yeah.
00:19:17
Jordan Smith
New Hampshire.
00:19:17
Steve Smythe
New Hampshire and mass. Yeah.
00:19:18
snowjobspodcast
I'm sure.
00:19:21
Jordan Smith
New Englanders.
00:19:22
Steve Smythe
Super excited for that.
00:19:23
RICK JAMES
Never heard
00:19:23
Steve Smythe
All these. I am. Um, then we got Arctic, Arctic, uh, snow and ice. That'll be, uh, that'll be a highlight running, running with those boys.
00:19:28
RICK JAMES
of them.
00:19:29
snowjobspodcast
Nice.
00:19:32
RICK JAMES
Oh, there's
00:19:33
Steve Smythe
And I'm sure, I'm sure there's a lots of different characters and personalities out there. That'll be awesome.
00:19:38
snowjobspodcast
Well, what did Randy say? He's got like 30 loaders in reserve. We'll have our own loaders if we go out there.
00:19:43
Steve Smythe
We'll have our own loaders.
00:19:43
RICK JAMES
60 loaders. I think it was like, I think it never was 60.
00:19:44
Steve Smythe
Perfect.
00:19:45
snowjobspodcast
60, 60. That's even better.
00:19:47
RICK JAMES
I remember it was 60 on that storm where he had to sit in there.
00:19:47
snowjobspodcast
Oh my good Lord.
00:19:50
Steve Smythe
60 loaders and I'm gonna bring one of those I'm gonna bring my own jump pack.
00:19:51
RICK JAMES
There you go.
00:19:53
Steve Smythe
So if I have a dead battery I don't have to walk through this.
00:19:55
Steve Smythe
No.
00:19:56
snowjobspodcast
There you go.
00:19:56
RICK JAMES
i't know
00:19:56
Steve Smythe
Yeah No, I won't fall in the ditch but another group great group Lucas and Randy and and John and those guys over there So and then we got East Coast facilities the mighty East Coast facilities on the list too.
00:19:56
snowjobspodcast
Don't fall in the ditch.
00:19:58
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:19:58
snowjobspodcast
Don't fall in the ditch.
00:20:05
RICK JAMES
Chicago area.
00:20:10
Steve Smythe
So that'll be awesome Hopefully Josh Brett can make it to that one i love You
00:20:12
RICK JAMES
ECF.
00:20:15
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:20:15
Jordan Smith
I think he'll make that one.
00:20:17
snowjobspodcast
The nice thing about East Coast is ah you you don't really have to worry about if they get snow. They're going to get, they're in so many different markets.
00:20:25
Steve Smythe
There's going to be some more.
00:20:25
snowjobspodcast
They're going to get snow at some point. You'll be able to go get on their sites.
00:20:30
Steve Smythe
that'll That'll be a blast. and'll be ah it'll be yeah it's It's like a dream come true.
00:20:35
snowjobspodcast
That's awesome.
00:20:37
Steve Smythe
It's just working with all these guys. It's pretty sweet. so
00:20:40
Jordan Smith
Well, and I think the the cool thing is, you know, it it obviously that the the goal and the hope is to elevate the industry, bring bring value to the industry, bring entertainment to the industry.
00:20:40
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:20:49
Jordan Smith
I mean, honestly, we all, we we do hard jobs. Like we need, we need to have fun, have entertainment too. But I think there's also um a lot of value for the companies being highlighted.
00:20:59
Jordan Smith
Like some of these companies, yeah, they already have tremendous brands, very well renowned.
00:21:01
snowjobspodcast
Absolutely.
00:21:05
Jordan Smith
Um, uh, most of them do honestly, but there's still a lot of value that's going to come from having hours and hours and hours of professional media. And one thing we've talked with our media team about is, you know, we, we can do, we'll make the whole episodes, but we can take some of the clips and portions and make them some, some videos they can use to sell jobs to their customers too.
00:21:24
snowjobspodcast
Sure.
00:21:24
Jordan Smith
Like, Hey, check out our process, check out our fleet, meet some of our people.
00:21:25
Steve Smythe
Absolutely.
00:21:29
Jordan Smith
I mean, that's that's something you would normally pay thousands or maybe even tens of thousands of dollars to put together.
00:21:30
Steve Smythe
Yeah.
00:21:35
Jordan Smith
And this is just additional value that we can bring to the people who are willing to let us in their into their homes, their businesses, and ah ah let us highlight their companies. So you know we want to reciprocate the value back to the the generous companies letting us take their time and resources as well.
00:21:51
snowjobspodcast
Absolutely. It's going to be good.
00:21:53
RICK JAMES
I mean, it's gonna be a win-win.
00:21:54
snowjobspodcast
It's going to be good for everybody. I think it's a win for everybody involved.
00:21:54
RICK JAMES
It's gonna be a win-win. Yeah, win-win. I mean, it's... I always... I'm really excited about it. Hopefully, the planets or me to get along and go through all these places if it all works out.
00:22:06
RICK JAMES
So, I'm pretty excited about that. I just... I loved i love the snow industry and I love to learn more stuff every day than this stuff. More people you meet.
00:22:15
snowjobspodcast
Fire up the storm jet.
00:22:17
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:22:17
Jordan Smith
That's right.
00:22:18
Steve Smythe
Arm jap.
00:22:19
snowjobspodcast
but
00:22:20
Jordan Smith
I thought it was a snow job, shit.
00:22:20
RICK JAMES
I mean, it's...
00:22:22
Jordan Smith
That's what I heard.
00:22:22
snowjobspodcast
Well, we'll see. We'll see. It's going to be a busy couple of weeks. We'll see.
00:22:27
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:22:27
snowjobspodcast
Um, but no, that is a, that is probably a big issue that like you touched on a little bit, Jordan, the logistics of getting like, we're all in different areas and to get us all without a hitch in the middle of winter, with storms going on here and there to get us all into the same place, to be able to do this, get immediate team moved in.
00:22:49
snowjobspodcast
It's going to be challenging. It's definitely going to be challenging. And, uh, I wonder if, uh, if we're not in for a couple of hiccups with, uh, flights canceled and all sorts of stuff, it it could be interesting. We could, we could have a couple of misses where we just can't get there in time due to cancel flights, due to any number of reasons. So it's it's going to be interesting how we pivot.
00:23:09
Jordan Smith
Yeah, I think that's part of the fun, though. I think it it just adds another layer to the complexity of the industry and and you know trying to trying to document it in this way adds a whole other layer. But you know I think we we got a great team. Obviously, Storm is really excited to be partner with SnowJobs on this and obviously having ah ah ECF media in our back pocket is not a bad thing. And you know the vendor we hired is is basically Set aside the entire winter for us.
00:23:37
Jordan Smith
So they're not going to be the ones that'll have a problem getting there. They, they told me straight up, we'll jump in a car and drive to Cleveland, Ohio. You know, <unk>ll we'll make it happen or and a truck, hopefully not a car if the weather's bad.
00:23:47
RICK JAMES
but
00:23:48
snowjobspodcast
Nice.
00:23:48
Jordan Smith
But, uh, I think the bigger challenge going to be for, for you snow jobs, boys, with your, uh, your snow businesses, obviously like you guys can't abandon your teams.
00:23:56
snowjobspodcast
It is.
00:23:56
RICK JAMES
you
00:23:57
Jordan Smith
Um, so that's why, you know, we kind of talked about if you guys can make it great.
00:23:57
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:23:57
snowjobspodcast
Yeah.
00:24:01
Jordan Smith
If, if you end up stuck there, that's, that's part of the reality of the business we're in, you know?
00:24:06
snowjobspodcast
It'll be in good hands if we don't make it.
00:24:08
Jordan Smith
Absolutely.
00:24:08
RICK JAMES
oh yeah.
00:24:09
snowjobspodcast
We have no we have no issues with that. But no, you're absolutely right. And that's
00:24:13
RICK JAMES
I'll be disappointed. I'll be really disappointed.
00:24:15
snowjobspodcast
Yeah, definitely disappointing. But at the same time, you know, it's this unfortunately is not our primary gig yet.
00:24:21
RICK JAMES
Alright.
00:24:23
snowjobspodcast
You know, it might be someday, but right now we're still ah helping run businesses that that do this job.
00:24:23
Jordan Smith
Yep.
00:24:28
snowjobspodcast
and And I mean, I think we're all kind of in the same boat that we just can't, if our guys are out doing it, we we we just can't, we can't be not there.
00:24:38
RICK JAMES
Copy that.
00:24:38
snowjobspodcast
That's just not how it's not how I'm built. I know it's not how Jeremy's built. You know, Jeremy's the first one to get in. He's the last one to go home.
00:24:43
Steve Smythe
Uh-huh.
00:24:45
snowjobspodcast
So, uh, you know, if they're out doing it, I'm not going to be somewhere else, uh, you know, under the bright lights and shit doing it. It's just not, uh, not there, but that's why, you know, that's why we have all these people lined up to help.
00:24:56
snowjobspodcast
And you have the storm team and you know, you have, uh, Steve Spythe who, uh, sold job is to just go around hanging with snow pros. It's a, it's a dream job. It's pretty cool.
00:25:06
Steve Smythe
It's pretty good.
00:25:07
RICK JAMES
It's a dream job.
00:25:07
Steve Smythe
It's pretty cool, man. It's beyond pretty cool.
00:25:09
snowjobspodcast
You know, you, it's awesome.
00:25:10
Steve Smythe
It's awesome.
00:25:11
snowjobspodcast
Do a couple few years in the snow industry and you, now you, you just get to to fly all over the place, hang out with the, you know,
00:25:17
Steve Smythe
and i still get I still get my fix to plow snow.
00:25:20
RICK JAMES
That's great.
00:25:22
snowjobspodcast
Oh, just don't go near Western.
00:25:23
Steve Smythe
I told told Jordan about a year ago, I said, I'm just nervous because I'm so used to plowing snow and I want to keep doing it.
00:25:23
RICK JAMES
Need a sidekick? Need a sidekick?
00:25:29
Steve Smythe
He was like, I'm still doing it.
00:25:30
snowjobspodcast
Well, you're, you're still doing it. You're just doing it for free for somebody else's company.
00:25:34
Steve Smythe
But it's so cool to go to other people's places and learn what they do.
00:25:38
Steve Smythe
i learned i like Just this last winter, just going around to the places I went to, you learn so much from the guys on the ground. you know yeah know Not the owners, the guys that are shoveling.
00:25:38
snowjobspodcast
It is 100%,
00:25:46
snowjobspodcast
100%.
00:25:49
Steve Smythe
Hey, we were using this piece of equipment. It's like, man, I always wanted to try one of those. And they're right there. you know It's just so cool.
00:25:55
snowjobspodcast
That's that, I mean, I think that's how we all, we all have an idea in our head, what is going to work and what we're going to go with until we are shown something that's revolutionary different. And then we, holy shit, how did I not think of that? That's the, those snow plow shovels.
00:26:10
snowjobspodcast
We, that's all we use now. And for the first four or five years we were doing it, we were doing it with the crappy, you know, the throwaways, the, that everybody buys 150 of the $20 shovels and we were throwing them away every storm.
00:26:17
Steve Smythe
Sure. Yeah. enough
00:26:22
snowjobspodcast
They were breaking, you know, three or four, those snowplow shovels. Somebody showed me those and I'm like, holy crap. That thing, it scrapes clean. They're, they're indestructible. Basically you're getting three or four years out of them, unless you back over them with a skid steer, uh, you know, but
00:26:30
Steve Smythe
Yeah, you can. And you.
00:26:36
Steve Smythe
Yours broke by doing that.
00:26:38
snowjobspodcast
Yes. While the handle did you still, you can still use it, but the handle broke.
00:26:38
Steve Smythe
Really? Yeah. Good thing with those, you can buy replacement parts though.
00:26:42
RICK JAMES
We easy we yeah, yeah, you can we easy easy find ours around Fargo just guys fall out of pick up some stuff No, they were small y'all there blame me I found quite a few
00:26:44
snowjobspodcast
You can, you can.
00:26:51
Steve Smythe
Were they falling out or were you following them in tape?
00:26:52
snowjobspodcast
but that
00:26:59
snowjobspodcast
But I mean, that's, it goes back to education though. It's going to show guys a lot of different equipment, a lot of, uh, how companies are doing what we all do, but doing it a little differently.
00:27:10
snowjobspodcast
And maybe you can take one thing from that episode, like we say on the show all the time. If you can take one thing from this episode and make it work for you successfully, then that's a win.
00:27:18
Steve Smythe
Yeah.
00:27:19
snowjobspodcast
45 minutes or however long they're going to be is a win.
00:27:22
Steve Smythe
and
00:27:22
Jordan Smith
and it Yeah, it's kind of like what we talked about with Storm Academy too.
00:27:26
Jordan Smith
like there's There's so little, or actually previous to some of the stuff we're doing here, no opportunity for snow pros to get in an environment where they're either with or watching video, live, sort of feels live video of another company doing snow to the point where they can collaborate with other ah other operators.
00:27:46
Jordan Smith
again As steve reference like you see the the owners and the head sales people and vp of ops whatever on linkedin facebook and and that's that's cool that's great i'm glad we have that community but actually seeing what other operators do or what other snow raider operators do or shovel operators or ventrac operators or or salt truck drivers like
00:27:48
Steve Smythe
and the.
00:28:07
Jordan Smith
you know it You only know what you know. And if if you don't see how other people do stuff, you can't learn new things. And I love the collaborative environment that this can create. And then even just having someone like Steve or or Jeremy or or the other Steve, like having you guys on site, you have experience, you guys know what you're doing. um You can maybe offer some sage advice along the way too. And I'm i'm excited to see what can happen.
00:28:29
snowjobspodcast
I'm the other Steve now on my own show.
00:28:32
Jordan Smith
hu
00:28:33
RICK JAMES
ah but ah
00:28:35
Steve Smythe
the you
00:28:37
snowjobspodcast
I'm Steve too.
00:28:37
Steve Smythe
hey
00:28:37
RICK JAMES
oh boy is there a spy here's because you're a spy you're you're a spying you just got that he just got lucky oh my god holy shit that's over your head
00:28:38
Steve Smythe
sort of the or ah not where that come from
00:28:38
snowjobspodcast
Yes, I'm, I'm Steve too.
00:28:45
snowjobspodcast
Yeah.
00:28:45
Steve Smythe
what's that
00:28:47
snowjobspodcast
You were a spy. They wouldn't let you in the factory. yous sp steve by You You didn't get that.
00:28:50
Steve Smythe
right
00:28:50
Jordan Smith
You never got that, come on, Steve.
00:28:52
Steve Smythe
ah
00:28:53
snowjobspodcast
It was the first time you get that.
00:28:53
Steve Smythe
night
00:28:55
snowjobspodcast
Oh my goodness.
00:28:58
snowjobspodcast
I can't believe you didn't get that.
00:28:59
Jordan Smith
Steve, we did a whole episode.
00:28:59
Steve Smythe
yeah had too many wased I had too many Westerns dropping my head over the years. so
00:29:05
snowjobspodcast
there That's great.
00:29:06
RICK JAMES
Oh my god.
00:29:07
Jordan Smith
we We did a whole episode of you calling them Spythe, and you didn't know what they meant?
00:29:11
Steve Smythe
Well, I was just getting over the flu that day.
00:29:12
Jordan Smith
Come on, man.
00:29:14
snowjobspodcast
Oh, that is true.
00:29:16
RICK JAMES
ah
00:29:16
Jordan Smith
Oh, that's true.
00:29:17
snowjobspodcast
That is true. He was sick.
00:29:18
Jordan Smith
Actually, that's funny. We should mention that after the episode. i text I texted Steve. Hey, great job. He's like, was it? I don't remember it.
00:29:24
Steve Smythe
okay
00:29:26
Jordan Smith
I was like, Oh no.
00:29:26
snowjobspodcast
love Yeah, you were pretty sick.
00:29:29
Steve Smythe
I was, I was out.
00:29:31
snowjobspodcast
Well, you're back and ready.
00:29:32
Jordan Smith
Yeah.
00:29:32
Steve Smythe
I'm back.
00:29:33
snowjobspodcast
You're ready for the winner.
00:29:33
Steve Smythe
I'm excited. I'm like, I'm like turbo charged now after this weekend notice like more and more.
00:29:39
Steve Smythe
It's awesome.
00:29:39
snowjobspodcast
Well, it's coming.
00:29:40
snowjobspodcast
I mean, it's coming. it It was shoot. I didn't have frost, but I walked out this morning. Take my son to hockey at like 6 15 and it was freaking cold. I went back in and got a heavier sweatshirt.
00:29:51
snowjobspodcast
I was a holy crap.
00:29:52
Steve Smythe
There.
00:29:52
RICK JAMES
sixty Sixty six there is pretty cold I was kidding look You got on that Oh
00:29:55
snowjobspodcast
What today it was not this morning though. Oh, I was going to say this morning, I think it was in the low forties. It was like, holy crap. Yeah. Usually not till February, but yeah, we we hit it today.
00:30:05
Jordan Smith
But.
00:30:09
snowjobspodcast
Still get snow, though. um Is there anything else we got to cover about the show? that Like I said, a lot of guys, if you were at the if you're at Simon, you're at the launch party, you got to see the video and stuff, which was great.
00:30:21
snowjobspodcast
I think Darcy put that video together. She did a great job on that. um But I think the explanation was necessary in telling everybody what we want to do with this and what our hopes are for it. I think it's going to be great.
00:30:32
snowjobspodcast
Do we need to hit anything else? You guys got anything else?
00:30:33
Jordan Smith
I think the only other thing is one, uh, sorry to cut you off, Jeremy, your mic's really quiet. I keep not hearing you talking. I apologize. Um, you know, one thing I love about this podcast is anytime that we come on air and ask for feedback or opinions, like.
00:30:50
Jordan Smith
but We get them and I, I even get them right to my direct messages.
00:30:51
snowjobspodcast
all you'll get it
00:30:54
Jordan Smith
Like I always tell my team, like every time I go on the podcast, I just might as well expect Facebook and LinkedIn and text messages, which is great. So please do it again in this situation. What I'm going to ask for is what do you guys want to see?
00:31:06
Jordan Smith
You know, like again, the concept is gold rush, dirty jobs for the snow industry. We talked about the companies we're going to highlight. We kind of, we have a high level idea of what the format looks like, but what do you guys want to make sure that we include?
00:31:19
Jordan Smith
Like what's. what that we didn't already mention is important to you. And it again, it doesn't mean we can do everything, but love to get that feedback because the more collaborative this is, the the better it is for everyone.
00:31:31
Steve Smythe
honor
00:31:31
snowjobspodcast
I think we should do a seventh episode with storm academy. If it's actually running this winter and with snow making capabilities and stuff. I think that is not only a great advertisement for for storm, but it's, it's actual great footage.
00:31:44
snowjobspodcast
Like who wouldn't want to see that? Like a snow academy that you can actually create and plow your own events. That's pretty cool.
00:31:50
Jordan Smith
That that's actually a really good idea because we can actually control the weather in that situation.
00:31:52
Steve Smythe
Uh
00:31:55
RICK JAMES
Yeah, I'll bring the drama.
00:31:56
Steve Smythe
-huh.
00:31:56
snowjobspodcast
You can.
00:31:57
RICK JAMES
ah ring the drum
00:31:58
Jordan Smith
Hmm.
00:31:59
snowjobspodcast
You know, Jeremy will bring the drama and then there you go. Good to go.
00:32:02
Jordan Smith
That that's actually a great idea that I didn't think about that.
00:32:02
snowjobspodcast
I think.
00:32:05
Steve Smythe
You'd say it's a really good idea.
00:32:06
snowjobspodcast
You can do it in a time to.
00:32:06
Steve Smythe
Yeah.
00:32:09
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:32:09
snowjobspodcast
When can you start making snow there realistically?
00:32:09
Jordan Smith
Hmm.
00:32:13
Jordan Smith
it depends i mean It depends on the year. Minnesota is pretty enigmatic when it comes to weather. Some years we we are below freezing every night in October, and and some years we don't get there until December.
00:32:23
snowjobspodcast
Hmm.
00:32:24
Jordan Smith
I'm hoping this is an early one. Everyone needs the snow. We had a bad winter last year, obviously. If it if it was last year, it probably wouldn't have been until December. you know we We have our first Storm Academy kickoff set for the third week in November.
00:32:36
Jordan Smith
That should be pretty safe, specifically at nighttime. Um, but we've had years where on Thanksgiving, which I think is the third Thursday of November every year or something where it's 75 degrees. So it its really depends on the year. My hope would be by mid to late October. We could be making snow at nighttime.
00:32:55
snowjobspodcast
Well, nice.
00:32:55
RICK JAMES
nice oh
00:32:56
snowjobspodcast
We could have a Jeremy Lindstrom, Steve, Smythe Plow off.
00:33:00
RICK JAMES
yeah oh god no no no all right first your last buddy you know you're not confident in your ability you shouldn't be out there
00:33:00
snowjobspodcast
See who's better.
00:33:00
Jordan Smith
There you go.
00:33:01
Steve Smythe
i'm I'm not even on that podium. I'm just i'm so far down. journey Jeremy, what are you on?
00:33:05
snowjobspodcast

00:33:06

00:33:32
snowjobspodcast

00:33:32
Jordan Smith
i think ever I think everyone would like to see the thing you talk about.
00:33:35
Jordan Smith
I think I've heard you talk a few times about the time you came to Mankato to plow. And and with a truck, you were out plowing a 78 foot metal plus with the ah from the ground down boys.
00:33:44
RICK JAMES

00:33:45
Steve Smythe

00:33:47
RICK JAMES

00:33:48

00:33:50
snowjobspodcast

RICK JAMES
I had a compact and I had 10 foot yep. I had a, I was, I can still, I could still see myself in the lower fawn circles around this 80 foot metal plus of Mitchell from the ground downs.
00:34:04
RICK JAMES
And just the guy was, the guy was so scared.
00:34:05
snowjobspodcast
He said he was scared, he wouldn't come near him.
00:34:07
RICK JAMES
I'd like go up to him. He's like, turn around and go, hey, it was like, Jesus. Like, what is this guy doing? I mean, ask Dustin. I did all of Manicato. And then after I went there, I went back to, uh, wherever to Mitchell.

00:34:32
snowjobspodcast
Oh my god.
00:34:33
Jordan Smith
Let's see it. Let's see it in action. Can't wait.
00:34:34
Steve Smythe
Yeah, I want to see this.
00:34:37
snowjobspodcast

00:35:00
Steve Smythe

00:35:00
RICK JAMES
And, and Steve wanted that. Steve was going to say, I told him he couldn't, he got a loader load truck. Oh, no, I got to get going. So when he shows up at the shop and I put him in a loader.
00:35:12
Steve Smythe
Yeah.
00:35:12
RICK JAMES
So you don't, don't show up at the shop here unless you want to work.

00:35:33
RICK JAMES
important
00:35:34
Jordan Smith
I mean, a lot of people have heard it by now, but just, just wanted to do a little bit deeper dive and and get that opportunity to ask for feedback. We want to make this thing, uh, the most valuable we can for the industry.
00:35:45
Jordan Smith
Obviously we want to have a lot of fun. Hopefully the people we work with have a lot of fun, but you know, we we just, we want to bring that value, bring that entertainment and, uh, can't wait to do it. Give us your feedback.
00:35:54
RICK JAMES
It's important.
00:35:55
Steve Smythe
Yeah.
00:35:55
snowjobspodcast
No, I think it's a home run.
00:35:57
snowjobspodcast
I don't think it, I don't think it could possibly miss.
00:36:00
Steve Smythe
Yeah. Like Jordan said, again, just reach out to any of us and anything you guys want to see or, you know, want us to deep dive or focus on, let us know all anytime.
00:36:08
RICK JAMES
Yeah, for sure.
00:36:09
snowjobspodcast
Absolutely.
00:36:09
RICK JAMES
I mean, it's just gonna be great. It's gonna be great just to put a light on this industry like we said over and over. I'd say this as much as I can. I'm always proud of my guys and I'd love to show their work and what they do in the night because they deserve it.
00:36:24
RICK JAMES
And I'm sure every other team does as well.
00:36:28
