Global Sports Podcast Network
my computer now giving me the silent routine as I start that advert as it always does and I should be ready for it but I am going on a wing and a prayer hoping that you heard that little intro sting which is starting today's episode from us at Daily Newcastle our preview for the Carabao Cup final.

Liverpool's Emotional and Physical State

00:00:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm your host Ian Mackay I'm joined by my two black and white buddies No, Nicola Pringle, can you feel that tingle? How you doing Nicola?
00:00:43
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, I'm good. How are you?
00:00:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm all right, I'm all right. And ah Mr Kevin Esther, you know he's the best, eh?
00:00:53
Kev
Oh, Ian.
00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mr
00:00:55
Kev
You know what? I love that. You're disappointing yourself, but I love it I am excellent, but I'm also ridiculously nervous. I can't believe we're already at the final preview pod.
00:01:04
Nicola Pringle-Adams
What, for the podcast?
00:01:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I think we're all a little bit ah a little bit looking at it nervously since we've realised we're playing in Liverpool a few weeks ago.
00:01:08
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh.
00:01:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I will be very interested to get your take on how you feel this week is going.
00:01:16
Nicola Pringle-Adams
laughs
00:01:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think, unusually, we we've had a pretty good week. And Liverpool have had a pretty rotten week. So I'm wondering if that's helping to even things up emotionally.
00:01:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And whether we are wrong to feel nervous, because um um I think there might be things that might be making Liverpool feel a little bit nervous this week. I spoke to the Liverpool fans last night on the crossover pod, which I'm sure everybody listened to this morning.
00:01:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Yeah, they're not and not super confident in the slightest. i think the I think the carpet has been pulled from underneath their feet by them getting knocked out of the Champions League.

Exploiting Liverpool's Weaknesses

00:02:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Missing all of the penalties wouldn't won't have helped.
00:02:08
Kev
Winners want the PSG isn't for everybody. Yep.
00:02:11
Nicola Pringle-Adams
It's not. I literally she was just about to say that.
00:02:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, it's true, isn't it? It's true. I mean, I know we only managed to draw when we played across there. But yeah, over two legs, I think we won 5-2, didn't we?
00:02:19
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mm-hmm.
00:02:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is that right?
00:02:22
Kev
Yep. Exactly.
00:02:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, of course.
00:02:24
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yep.
00:02:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And and that was a PSG that had Mbappe up front, who I think people would still be arguing is the best player in the world at the moment.
00:02:28
Kev
Exactly.
00:02:32
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No, no, no, no, no.
00:02:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
But anyway, look, I'm sure it's not directly comparable, but certainly watching that game, I felt for them because I thought they played much better in the second game.
00:02:34
Nicola Pringle-Adams
no no
00:02:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um having Having won the first game not by not playing very well, they played much better in the second game and, of course, got knocked out on penalties, which meant they played extra time.
00:02:46
Kev
Brilliant.
00:02:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
They did look absolutely shattered as extra time was finishing. And then the sight of Jamie Carragher having a nervous breakdown during the penalties...
00:02:57
Kev
the
00:03:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mo Salah leaving the field in tears as his Champions League dream was crushed. That's all got to have some sort of emotional effect. um Do you think it'll have any sort of emotional effect, Nicola?
00:03:18
Nicola Pringle-Adams
that Yeah, it's either going to go one or two ways. They are going to either still be sort of on a come down, if you like, from their PSG game. and Because you're right, they looked incredibly tired. um um You know, my husband said that they looked tired and he was a little bit worried going into um Sunday's game, which is what we want to hear from a Liverpool fan.
00:03:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
but but
00:03:42
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um And it's either going to go that way and they're still going to be sort of tired and sort of struggling, not struggling, but, you know, struggling a little bit. all It's going to go the complete opposite way and they are going to come out raring to go um because they feel like they have a point to prove because obviously it's like it's a final that they're in.
00:04:00
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um However, a few injuries. few key players that went off with an injury. um i don't know if there's been an update. Obviously, I don't keep myself up to date with Liverpool players. But um yeah, so we shall see what Liverpool side decide to turn up.
00:04:16
Nicola Pringle-Adams
But it's bound to have an emotional effect. They're probably all Obviously, Champions League massive one. They were favourites to sort of win at one point. So, yeah, it's bound to have an emotional effect on them.
00:04:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
yes I think Nicholas touched on something which will also unnerve them a little of bit, which is the yeah best player, best passsser English passer of the ball of the Premier League is cropped and out.
00:04:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mr. Trent Alexander-Arnold is missing. um
00:04:46
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mm-hmm.
00:04:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now I'm thinking Canate looks really ropey when he got taken off as well. He could barely walk off the pitch. I'd love for him to be missing as well because I think then, The insider I got from the boys last night is that Conor Bradley's injured and Joe Gomez is injured, so they don't have anyone to play at right back.

Newcastle's Confidence and Strategy

00:05:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It's probably going to be endo if Kwanzaa has to come in and cover for Kanata, etc.
00:05:10
Kev
take him and
00:05:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Suddenly, Liverpool look in complete disarray in defence. And when Van Dijk's already going to have a sleepless night knowing he's facing Isaac again, surely, surely that's why we've got to be really, really up now for this game.
00:05:22
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Okay.
00:05:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
what do you think, Kev?
00:05:28
Kev
I think, I mean, when we watched Bruno's interview after a West Ham game, I think... the all-up for it. to it created He called it a World Cup final, didn't he? So, we all know how much it means and in the all-up for it, but you're right, Ian. I mean, the the whole way the PSG game unfolded emotionally, mentally, physically, and then the injuries on top of that with Trent, potentially Canardy, and like you just said there with Gomez already being injured.
00:05:53
Kev
It's just, that's got to be a boost to the players. They've got to hear things like that and watch things like that and think, oh, This is our year. And I've been saying it's our year. i think when we did predictions at the start, I predicted us to get to the final of the League Cup.
00:06:07
Kev
um i wasn yeah I wasn't brave enough to say we'd win it.
00:06:07
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I've got them written down so need to have a look.
00:06:12
Kev
i think somebody did.
00:06:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:06:13
Kev
But it's a case of I genuinely think we're winning it. I honestly, i think our name's on the trophy. I think it's been on the trophy since the start of the season.
00:06:24
Kev
You look at the teams we've beat on this run, right? Nottingham Forest. Where are they now? Third, fourth? and Chelsea, fourth or fifth.
00:06:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
fifth
00:06:33
Kev
Arsenal, second. And now Liverpool are first. So we're working our way up. We are beating the best of the best in the league. and I think if we win it, it's one of the most impressive runs in a League Cup ever.
00:06:48
Kev
Because we have literally beat the top five slash top four in the League Cup round after round. So I genuinely think our name's on it. I think we are going to win it. It feels weird saying that.
00:06:59
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah
00:07:00
Kev
And I still see it now being a little bit nervous. Like, am I really saying we're going to win a cup? Like, what? um But yeah, but I've just got a feeling. And it's just, I've been saying it for too long. I think we're winning it.
00:07:12
Kev
No matter what happens. Trent could be fit. Canadi could be fit. We could have Hall, Gordon, Izak, and whoever you want. I genuinely think we're winning it no matter what. I can't see us not winning it, Ian.
00:07:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm always was encouraged by the fact that Chelsea were hot favourites last year when they played Liverpool's boys team and yet that young lads, Bobby Clark included ah believe, ah they won the League Cup against Chelsea and did' nobody gave them a prayer at the start.
00:07:35
Kev
Mm-hmm.
00:07:41
Nicola Pringle-Adams
no
00:07:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So it's a final, isn't it? It's a one-off game. It's always tight and tense. First goal I think will be crucial. And I think we've got one or two players who are adept at creating something out of nothing or taking a quarter chance and putting us in the lead.
00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we we tend to be doing it reasonably early these days as well. So I think Newcastle scored first, first 10 minutes. That could really set We'll talk in the second part about where the key battles are.
00:08:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Without there being any spoilers, I think what we need to see is

Team Selection and Key Players

00:08:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
and midfield functioning like they did against Arsenal in the semi-final, rather than and and the anonymous midfield that shambled around at home to Bournemouth or Fulham.
00:08:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was encouraged and the match in West Ham that Bruno played... such a big role. I still thought Tonali was my man of the match actually but Grunov got it probably because he scored the goal but it was a much better performance from him than we've seen in the last month.
00:08:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
we We definitely need that. and Given that I think it might be yeah ah think I might be alongside you Kev. in the yeah Let's get on. Let's get it on.
00:08:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to play because we tend to talk just about Liverpool at this time and that's not right. I'm going to play their Bionique advert. early so we can talk about King battles and team lineups for a little bit longer.
00:09:09
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Thank you.
00:09:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you, Ken. When I heard that last night, there was a big gap in the middle of it, and I'm waiting for a gap and for him to come back. He still might. but don't it The gap wasn't that long. Right, look, let's pick our team first and foremost, because I think there are, well, I've got a i've got a few.
00:10:02
Nicola Pringle-Adams
so
00:10:06
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh, sick.
00:10:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've got a few about what I think will get picked, but I'm interested to hear first you who you guys think is going to get picked. Nicola, go through the team from goalkeeper, back four, stroke five, midfield attack.
00:10:21
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh. and
00:10:27
Nicola Pringle-Adams
ah We said this the other day, didn't we, Kev? Right. What I think will get picked is and goalkeeper Nick Pope, obviously written in the stars because he started against West Ham, but I don't want him to start. I would rather Dubravka start. But anyway, I'm not the one picking the team.
00:10:44
Nicola Pringle-Adams
At the back, I would go five at the back, maybe. Oh, I don't know. I'm under pressure. I would go Tino left I've got it written down.
00:10:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:10:55
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Tino left, Bernsha, Kraft in the middle and then Trippier on the right. However, Tino on the left with no left foot gives me the absolute fear. So anyway, here we are. um And then I would go Bruno Tonali in the middle, Murphy on the right.
00:11:13
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And then who would I go on the left?
00:11:16
Kev
Has to be Joel Linton, right?
00:11:17
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Joey Litton on the left, yep.
00:11:18
Kev
Yeah. mean
00:11:18
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And then Isak up front, obviously.
00:11:19
Kev
yeah
00:11:21
Nicola Pringle-Adams
That's my team. I know, but I do like Willick, but it will be Joey Linton.
00:11:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:11:25
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, that's my team. Woo, feel sick.
00:11:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kevin, are you...
00:11:27
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Woo.
00:11:29
Kev
ah who I hope we go forth for Liverpool of fragile. This is the most fragile they've been all season. Is the purple will patch over or are they just in a little bit of a blip?
00:11:39
Kev
think we've got to attack them. think we've got to 4-3-3. I'd go Pope and goal.
00:11:42
Nicola Pringle-Adams
so
00:11:44
Kev
Trippier right back, Tino left back, Burn and Shaw. And then it's the midfield three, the Joe Linton, Tenardi, Bruno. Personally,
00:11:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bruno Aliton,
00:11:55
Kev
Brunali-ton. Love it.
00:11:56
Nicola Pringle-Adams
for not each one.
00:11:57
Kev
I would go, personally, I would go Willock left wing.
00:11:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:12:00
Kev
I just feel like he's got a running power um to really carry the ball well for us, especially on such a big pitch and a big occasion. I'd give Willock the opportunity ahead of Barnes, but maybe i have Barnes to come off the bench. and So yeah, Willock left wing, I'd have on it Murphy right wing with Isaac.
00:12:16
Kev
I think we've got to attack them and I i don't know why. i don't know if it's a premonition. I don't know if I've had a dream. I don't know if I've had a drink. I might have had a drink with what I'm about to say. I think we're going to be, we're going to start so fast, we're going to blow them away.
00:12:29
Kev
And I genuinely believe we're going to 3-0 up after 40 minutes.
00:12:33
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Whoa! I would
00:12:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whoa, that's the dream I want, Kev. What have you been drinking, did you say?
00:12:38
Kev
Second half, we'll go to Nicola's team.
00:12:38
Nicola Pringle-Adams
love that.
00:12:40
Kev
We'll go 5-5-0 and we'll just, that's it, game one.
00:12:43
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No.
00:12:43
Kev
We'll be partying at halftime, I'm telling you. We're partying at halftime.
00:12:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, my view was that probably exactly what probably exactly what Kev said, ah much faster way of saying a much faster way of what Kev said was that Eddie said he would pick his strongest team to play against West Ham.
00:12:50
Nicola Pringle-Adams
got butterflies in my stomach. I'm so excited.
00:12:54
Kev
and ah I'd give Butterfly to women.
00:13:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think that is the 11 that he'll pick to start against Liverpool.
00:13:08
Kev
No, I think it'd be Willick.
00:13:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
And with you, Kev, I think Willock might come in on the left for Barnes, save him on the on the bench um because of that running power and because of his connection with both Isaac and Joe Linton.
00:13:09
Kev
Willick?
00:13:19
Kev
Jordan. Yeah.
00:13:20
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mums did get the assist though. On Saturday, Sunday, whenever it was.
00:13:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm probably right there with you, but I wouldn't...
00:13:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
He did. and
00:13:26
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Monday.
00:13:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Barnes did really well. Barnes had the two shots on target in the first half and he
00:13:30
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
and he created the assist for for Bruno.
00:13:33
Kev
I'll be assist, yeah.
00:13:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, you know, Eddie was quite fulsome in his praise after the West Ham game, which is why I think you'll pick Barnes.
00:13:41
Kev
Hmm.
00:13:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I would prefer to see Willock there because I think there have been one or two signs that Joe Willock has found his running power, which we hadn't seen for quite some time in recent games.
00:13:52
Kev
Trust his body again, yeah.
00:13:54
Nicola Pringle-Adams
He does, yeah. He's going to be up for Wembley.
00:13:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, but I do think, I agree entirely with Kev, that
00:13:56
Nicola Pringle-Adams
He's got a point to prove.
00:14:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Liverpool, particularly if they're short at the back, and if they're a little bit tired, sitting back and letting them come on to us with a five-man defence.
00:14:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know it's not all that. It wasn't all that against Arsenal, but we did sit back and let them come on to us largely and hit them on the counter-attack. I think that plays into Liverpool's hands. If they are tired, they must be.
00:14:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
We need to be all over them. We need to be all over them so that They're really tired after an hour because that's when it'll start to show. um ah think it's a real bonus if Trent's not playing and if Canati's not playing.
00:14:41
Kev
Thank
00:14:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've got a completely makeshift back four. We need to be all over that. We do. i So I agree entirely, Kev. We go after them. We go man-to-man with them. We make it every individual in that team's personal responsibility to win their duels against the man that they're marking.
00:15:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think we can get to see some... ah One of the traditional intensity is our identity performances.
00:15:08
Kev
well
00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's when we go five up against Tottenham in 20 minutes. It's when we go two up against saudi United.
00:15:14
Kev
I mean, it'll be five to three.
00:15:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Two up against Man United in the first 20 minutes. What was it? Three up against Leicester in 10 minutes last season.
00:15:22
Kev
Yeah.
00:15:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:15:23
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, it was.
00:15:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
When we're on it, we are super on it.
00:15:24
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Did
00:15:25
Kev
Yep.
00:15:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's what we need to do.
00:15:27
Kev
As well, with Liverpool recently, they drew with Everton 2-2, so they conceded two there.
00:15:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
That is what we need to do.
00:15:33
Kev
They drew with Villa 2-2, conceded two.
00:15:35
Nicola Pringle-Adams
you take that?
00:15:35
Kev
They did beat Wolves 2-1 and Southampton 3-1, but mean, they conceded the Wolves and Southampton who were both down there They obviously beat PSG 1-0 but i mean they were battered on the night and then obviously they went out the Champions League the other night.
00:15:49
Kev
This is the most fragile Liverpool have looked and I genuinely think we're starting. well We're very inconsistent, aren't we? But that West Ham performance was a lot of grit, a lot of lot fight, a lot of we're still in the race for the Champions League type thing. And I just honestly think with the way we'll be up for it in the League Cup, Liverpool on the hangover, like I say, they've been conceding more goals recently than they've looked like for a long time.
00:16:13
Kev
I just think it's written in the stars. I genuinely, genuinely believe somebody will be sat here on a Sunday, well not where I am because I'll be in a car driving back up but somebody will be sat on this podcast ready to go out on Monday saying we've done it, we've won it and I'll be leaving a voice note on WhatsApp for somebody to download and play because unbelievable, genuinely Liverpool look fragile, we're going to do it convince of course
00:16:30
Nicola Pringle-Adams
to play yeah
00:16:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
you
00:16:35
Nicola Pringle-Adams
there's not one team up for it more than what I think Newcastle are to be honest um ah I will say that and you guys have just hit the nail on the head there by you know we're sat here predicting our team but I've just had a thought like Eddie Howell can be quite unpredictable so it must be an absolute nightmare for people like Arnie Slott who are a bit like
00:16:40
Kev
Yep
00:16:52
Kev
Yep.
00:16:56
Nicola Pringle-Adams
what is he going to come out and do? What is he going to come out and put in front of me? Because no one expected what we did against Arsenal in the second leg, not all the first leg, whichever way around it was.
00:17:03
Kev
yep
00:17:04
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No one expected that. um And we're sat here trying to predict our side, but you just don't know. I would love, I would love, love, love to just be sat at the Newcastle training ground to see and what they're doing

Fantasy Players and Predictions

00:17:14
Nicola Pringle-Adams
because he's so unpredictable.
00:17:15
Kev
and
00:17:15
Nicola Pringle-Adams
we just don't know. um And you're right.
00:17:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:17:18
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Liverpool, Liverpool, haven't looked as fragile ever as what they do right now. um And it's not a great time in the season for them, for players like Trent, who obviously is heavily rumoured to be leaving.
00:17:29
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um But it's not a great time to be getting, for them to be getting injuries where they are because, yeah.
00:17:36
Kev
And if if you remember when Liverpool beat us at Anfield in the league, we were without Isaac. Isaac clearly wasn't that badly injured, but he played Wilson.
00:17:42
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yep.
00:17:46
Kev
He played Willock on the left, which makes me think he's probably going to play Barnes. and Hall played that game, Trippie didn't play. So he was, even then, I don't think he sacrificed that game. Of course he didn't. He wants to win every game and he's clear about that.
00:18:00
Kev
But I think if that was against any other team, he probably would have played and started. I think he knows how big this is. and He has got a bit of a knock. He is a little bit. He wasn't 100% fit, but he's almost like, i'm not going to risk him.
00:18:12
Kev
I don't want Liverpool to get any sort of feel of what we're going to do but do to him on Sunday.
00:18:14
Nicola Pringle-Adams
intel
00:18:16
Kev
And obviously Liverpool, like I say, recently conceding goals against Everton, Villa, Wolves, Southampton. we have a We have more of a chance than what some people think when I've been reading online and when I've been listening to radio.
00:18:28
Kev
I still think personally, if i'm if I'm being honest, as much as I'd love my premonition and dream to come true, it's probably, i think most people think it's maybe Liverpool favour with the Trent injury and stuff. I genuinely believe it's about 52 Liverpool, 48 Newcastle. I think it could go either way, but I genuinely believe we're going to blow them away.
00:18:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, Kev, if we go three that means my 3-1 prediction will be will be on, won't it? I mean, Liverpool probably do.
00:18:55
Kev
It'll finish 4-3 to Newcastle this time. We'll finally be on the positive end a 4-3 and it'll be in the final.
00:19:00
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:19:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of a 4-3 against Liverpool? Oh, God, no.
00:19:02
Kev
We'll finally be on the positive end of one, though, Ian. We won't be losing one this time. We'll be winning one, but we were 3-0 up.
00:19:10
Nicola Pringle-Adams
no
00:19:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And remember as well in that game ah recently at Anfield, I don't think Joe Linton was fit. Joe Linton was injured in that match. So it is a very different Newcastle team that turns up.
00:19:22
Kev
Yeah, good point.
00:19:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
We cannot, and we sat off we set off Liverpool in that game and we when we gave it gave up the first goal. i think that's another key thing that we've got to avoid doing.
00:19:34
Kev
Mm.
00:19:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
is one of Fabian Shah's diagonal cross field balls that actually gets intercepted two yards outside our own box, which I've seen too regularly since Christmas, to be fair.
00:19:46
Kev
no
00:19:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got to not do anything silly like that.
00:19:47
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Me.
00:19:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
and You know, we keep gifting teams the first goal. Forrest...
00:19:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can't remember. No, but we do to keep gifting teams the first goal.
00:19:58
Kev
um
00:20:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I don't want to do that. i want as I want us to be on the front foot and I want us to be concentrating.
00:20:06
Kev
Thank you.
00:20:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Look, I'm going to play... No fact I'm not, I'm going to ask for the Pringle Tingle and the Zencastr ad and then we shall find something to talk about in the last half, I'm sure.
00:20:12
Nicola Pringle-Adams
me
00:20:21
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um Sorry, guys, I've lost it. There it is. Here at the Global Sports Podcast Network, we spent a lot of time selecting our delivery platform. Zencastr came out the clear winner. With 4K video recording from your phone and AI editing that automatically removes all those ums and ahs, it is super easy to start a podcast that sounds great and is delivered efficiently.

00:20:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you very much indeed, Nicola. So much better than the recorded one that I had.
00:20:48
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Thank you.
00:20:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not the one that Michael recorded. Before you phone in to complain, Michael, I'm not criticising your recording. It's just some ah unknown person's recording. I'd much rather listen to Nicola tell us about how lovely Zancaster is.
00:21:05
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Thanks.
00:21:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
There we go. So yes, a very different Newcastle team that will be playing against Liverpool on Sunday. And When you start breaking it down like that, um all the advantages are with Newcastle.
00:21:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Isaac back, Joe Linton back, Trent missing. and Have we decided who we would prefer to play in goal for Newcastle?
00:21:33
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Shay given.
00:21:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. He probably still could do a job at 50 or whatever he is.
00:21:41
Kev
yeah
00:21:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:21:42
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um
00:21:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
But do we go... i mean, I would i would pick Dubravka.
00:21:46
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Same.
00:21:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
You would pick Dubrovka, but I think it's going to be Pope, isn't it?
00:21:51
Kev
i would i would I would pick Pope.
00:21:52
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Well.
00:21:54
Kev
ah
00:21:54
Nicola Pringle-Adams
If.
00:21:57
Kev
Go on, Nicola.
00:21:58
Nicola Pringle-Adams
He said that he picked his strongest line-up, or what he thought to be his strongest line-up um for the West Ham game. um Obviously, included Nick Pope.
00:22:10
Nicola Pringle-Adams
But I just, I've said it time and time again, and I just don't want to keep repeating myself, because I know there's people that disagree, and there's people that agree. I just feel like Dubbs, I don't know, I just feel like he deserves it. Well, I know it's not all about that, but yeah.
00:22:23
Kev
We need to remember that Dubravka, Dubravka at times, not this season, because he's looked a lot better this season and towards the back end of last season.
00:22:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:22:32
Kev
but But there has been times in the last two or three seasons where Dubravka has looked like he's got crisp packets for hands. It's just went through them or under them. Now, that hasn't been the case recently.
00:22:44
Kev
I agree. Recently, he's looked very good. However, for a one-off big game, um

Conclusion and Post-Match Plans

00:22:50
Kev
as much as as bad as Pope is with his feet and as much as he panics and as much as he he honestly strikes fear into me when the ball goes back to him not making a massive case for him but I think you've got to go with Pope he's played big games in the past um and obviously he's played for England and all that type of stuff but yeah I think
00:23:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:23:10
Kev
Pope. Pope has to be the answer. um He's in poor form as well. But I just, De Bravka's, we both have mistakes in him at the minute or it feels like we do, which is really weird for Newcastle because for a long time we thought we had a really good number two and a really good number one.
00:23:23
Kev
And it's kind of flipped all of a sudden where our number two looks a little bit better than our were number one, but he's still got a mistake in him, Dubs. He really has. So personally, I want Pope to start.
00:23:32
Nicola Pringle-Adams
But so is Nick Pope.
00:23:35
Kev
You're right, they have.
00:23:35
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So is Nick Pope.
00:23:35
Kev
But i just think I just think over a longer period of time, when they've been in the team, I know Dubravka's had less time in the team recently.
00:23:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
look i
00:23:43
Kev
But if you look at Dubravka's probably games on average and Pope's games on average, I would probably argue that Pope has been more consistent during his time at Newcastle overall.
00:23:43
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Fair.
00:23:52
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Do you not think, though, that Pope has, what's the right phrase, um just looks hesitant at times? Do not get that nervy feeling.
00:24:00
Kev
He does. He does.
00:24:01
Nicola Pringle-Adams
i Honestly, I don't get that with Dubravka at all.
00:24:02
Kev
Um,
00:24:05
Kev
um I'm worried did but when Dubravga parries the ball, he normally parries it back into danger. That scares the life out of me. And also, sometimes when he goes down, again, it hasn't happened recently. This is more based on last season.
00:24:17
Kev
Because I think he didn't, was it last season when he came in the team and conceded a ridiculous amount of goals in the first five games?
00:24:23
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No, I think it was this season.
00:24:24
Kev
Dubravga, was it this? It wasn't, it was last season, I think.
00:24:26
Nicola Pringle-Adams
It last season.
00:24:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, last season.
00:24:27
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I think it was.
00:24:28
Kev
He conceded about 25 goals in three games.
00:24:28
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:24:30
Kev
And I was like, oh my goodness.
00:24:31
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah Yeah, but let's focus on this season.
00:24:32
Kev
So I know, he's been better this season. But I just think overall with Dubravka, he's got the tendency for his, like I say, his hands to turn to crisp packets and it just goes through them or under them. And I'm like, oh no, ah just I just want Pope. I want Pope. He's going to scare the life out of us when the ball's at his feet.
00:24:49
Kev
I'm going to be terrified every time a ball gets passed back to him and he gets pressed. But if it's a shot, apart from whatever game it was when he was miles out of position for some reason...
00:24:53
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yes, me too.
00:24:58
Kev
Apart from that game, if a shot comes in from like 20 yards, I've got a bit of a confidence that he's going to save it. Whereas De Bravga, think anything could happen here.
00:25:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, nobody has mentioned this and that I am going to because it's my prediction. and
00:25:13
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Do
00:25:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
When Dubravka signed his extension to his contract but Nick Pulp was nearly ready to come back into the first team, I think Eddie said, don't worry, Mon, you can be our cup goalkeeper.
00:25:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's why Dubravka replaced Pope for the match against Brighton. That's why Pope then replaced Dubravka for the match against West Ham. And I think that'll be why Dubravka will replace Pope on Sunday in the cup game against Liverpool.
00:25:40
Nicola Pringle-Adams
do it
00:25:44
Kev
I don't know.
00:25:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a theory.
00:25:45
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Do we think this is Eddie's little game of unpredictability?
00:25:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a theory.
00:25:50
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Like, i'm going to start Dubravka some games, going to start Pope some games.
00:25:53
Kev
I just think long longterm long term with the Champions League running, you don't really want Port being dropped for the final.
00:25:53
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Who am I going to start?
00:26:00
Kev
That's just going to shatter any bit of confidence which is left, isn't it? When he comes...
00:26:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not not if he says not if he says, look, Nick, Martin's been in goal for the last three rounds.
00:26:09
Kev
Yeah... but
00:26:11
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Who is the team?
00:26:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
you will be playing You will be playing the last 10 Premier League matches. But it's only fair that Martin takes his place in this cup team that he's been there since the Bromley game.
00:26:21
Kev
but you Brave move.
00:26:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Sorry, since the Wimbledon game.
00:26:23
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Was it Chelsea in them ah was it choing the Carabao Cup final, the FA Cup final, where they tried to take their goalkeeper off for the penalties and then bring a goalkeeper on?
00:26:30
Kev
Kepa. He refused.
00:26:31
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, it was, isn't it?
00:26:32
Kev
yeah
00:26:32
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Talk about... Yeah, unless maybe I hope it's not one of them situations. That would embarrassing.
00:26:36
Kev
I'd rather have Pope for penalties. Pope saved two a couple of seasons ago.
00:26:39
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Agreed. would.
00:26:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, that is true.
00:26:40
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I would. Yeah.
00:26:41
Kev
I'd rather have Pope for penalties if it does go to penalties.
00:26:43
Nicola Pringle-Adams
That is true.
00:26:44
Kev
Definitely have him on the bench if Martin does start. I do want to ask his both question if that's allowed though.
00:26:48
Nicola Pringle-Adams
You're about to steal my question.
00:26:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, go on then.
00:26:49
Nicola Pringle-Adams
You're about to steal my question, aren't you?
00:26:51
Kev
well We both saw it at the same time. Go on, Nick, you ask it.
00:26:53
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No, you ask it. I've spoken of.
00:26:55
Kev
Oh my God, women. um Anyway, the question is, if you could bring back any previous Newcastle player to play in this final, who would it be?
00:27:05
Kev
I'm going to go to Ian.
00:27:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I'm not going to pick anyone to replace Dubravka or Pope, because I think that's think that's your choices.
00:27:12
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I am.
00:27:14
Kev
but
00:27:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Who would it be? Who would it be? Somebody who I think we're all right in midfield. We could probably do with somebody bombing down the right-hand side.
00:27:28
Kev
Go on, Ian.
00:27:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's have... Is that not where Ben Arthur used to play?
00:27:34
Kev
Oh, i imagine if you had Ben Arthur.
00:27:35
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh, I love him.
00:27:37
Kev
you would tear Robertson apart.
00:27:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
There you go.
00:27:41
Kev
Ben Arthur's a great choice.
00:27:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll stick with that.
00:27:43
Kev
I'm going to go, before we round it nicely, back to the goalkeeper position with Nick. I'm going to go for Jonathan Woodgate. Obviously, he needs to be fit. But imagine, imagine bringing a fit Jonathan Woodgate into that defence. We would look the spine of our team.
00:27:58
Kev
Woodgate, then Mem3 in midfield and Izak, nobody's beating If you can get a fully fit Jonathan Woodgate for one more game, I would stick him straight in the heart of a defence. And then Nick...
00:28:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm imagining
00:28:09
Nicola Pringle-Adams
believe it
00:28:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm imagining Jonathan Woodgate lying in the hospital bed next to the one that Sven Botman is lying in.
00:28:17
Kev
After the game, after the game probably, but for that one game, we just need him to get through 90 minutes. And Jonathan Woodgate scored the winner in the League Cup win Tottenham in 2008.
00:28:22
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Just need him to get.
00:28:28
Kev
He scored the winner, didn't he, Jonathan Woodgate? So, he scored in the League Cup final before.
00:28:31
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Let's bring him back in 2025. again?
00:28:35
Kev
ah
00:28:36
Nicola Pringle-Adams
do again
00:28:36
Kev
He's unbelievable for us. I would pick Woodgate. Nick, who are you picking?
00:28:40
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I said him. I'm bringing back Shea Given, guys. so
00:28:42
Kev
Yeah, it's a good choice as well.
00:28:44
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I'm bringing back Shea Given.
00:28:45
Kev
That would end with Dubravka and Pope debate instantly, wouldn't it if Shea Given comes back?
00:28:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Let's be fair, if Tim Krull came back, if Pavel Serbicek came back, there would be no debate. I think we're short in goalkeeper. I think we might have Liverpool's third choice goalkeeper next season.
00:29:03
Kev
Hmm.
00:29:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or James Trafford.
00:29:05
Kev
Marmadashvili?
00:29:06
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Trafford?
00:29:06
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Trafford?
00:29:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:29:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think, what do you call him? Keller becomes the choice goalkeeper.
00:29:10
Kev
Kellera, Kellera, yeah.
00:29:10
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Kelleher, yeah.
00:29:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
becomes the choice
00:29:12
Kev
I hope he plays because Alisson is in the form his life.
00:29:15
Kev
hope he plays. hope he sticks with our cup goalkeeper because Alisson's on unbelievable form.
00:29:16
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mate.
00:29:21
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, he is. He's in the form of his life at the minute.
00:29:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. I predicted on the crossover last night that Newcastle would win threebo And you can't have that off me. I'm sticking with it. and like I like us winning 3-0 at halftime and just holding them off for the second half.
00:29:31
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Cool.
00:29:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's about to happen, isn't it? Bernard Shaw at the back, shutting out the Liverpool front three. Yeah, of course. Kevin, what prediction are you going to have?
00:29:47
Kev
o um
00:29:48
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Holy McMoly. You just say we'll be three and a half time.
00:29:53
Kev
I did, but I think Bale scored two in the second half.
00:29:56
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Don't do that.
00:29:57
Kev
So I'm going to go and then we sneak a counter-attack in the last minute to just send the Geordie's absolutely mental for a 4-2 win. And Ramadan has come at a great time and because Mo Salah isn't looking like the typical Mo Salah without jinxing too much.
00:30:13
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Why would you say that?
00:30:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah so you're going for four
00:30:16
Kev
Well, he got he can you can't eat or drink.
00:30:16
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um
00:30:19
Kev
So, until the sun goes down.
00:30:21
Nicola Pringle-Adams
they'll get give them a break though
00:30:21
Kev
And... We will, but that'll be in the second half. And it kicks off at half four, so the sun will still be up. So, Salah is not eating or drinking that day. 4-2 Newcastle. Anyway, back my prediction.
00:30:32
Kev
4-2.
00:30:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
wow i thought i was being bold at three one
00:30:34
Nicola Pringle-Adams
wow okay yeah I'm going a little bit more um not so bold because um I'm absolutely bricking it guys don't know I'm so excited for um i first of all just want to
00:30:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
and just
00:30:41
Kev
I'm just excited because I'm driving down there. Come on!
00:30:48
Nicola Pringle-Adams
flipping see Newcastle score at Wembley because I just want to see 35,000 Geordies go absolutely insane. um That's my first point.
00:30:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:30:55
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um So if they could just get a goal, that would be absolutely fantastic. But my score prediction is... God, I feel sick. 2-1. Newcastle, obviously.
00:31:07
Kev
thought you were going to 1-1 and a win on penalties just to be dramatic.
00:31:09
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No, not doing that.
00:31:10
Kev
I'm not doing penalties.
00:31:11
Nicola Pringle-Adams
not do We're not going to extra... It will be extra time, won't it?
00:31:13
Kev
how bad would penalties be back?
00:31:13
Nicola Pringle-Adams
well
00:31:15
Kev
That would be, Liverpool have just lost, Liverpool have just lost a penalty shootout, so the expectation would be, oh, we're going to win, and then all of a sudden, it's like, oh no, we've missed our first penalty.
00:31:16
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Guys, also...
00:31:23
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I hate pennies as well. It's such an awful way to go out.
00:31:27
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So yeah.
00:31:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, for them to lose another penalty shootout, all of those fantastic players who missed have got to miss two in a row, which I just couldn't, I couldn't see them doing It won't be penalties, won't be penalties.
00:31:32
Nicola Pringle-Adams
well Very unlikely.
00:31:32
Kev
That's very unlikely.
00:31:35
Kev
I think if it goes to penalties, we're in trouble.
00:31:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'm absolutely delighted that between the three of us, all three of us have got Newcastle winning this cup in 90 minutes.
00:31:45
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh yeah.
00:31:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And compared to where we were when we were doing in our Brighton game review and we'd and we'd heard that...
00:31:48
Kev
been seeing it up there.
00:31:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
so Gordon was banned for it and Lewis Hall was out for the season. i don't think we would all have predicted winning in 90 minutes there, but just goes to show there's some bad luck for the other team helps us.
00:32:05
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Positive vibes, guys.
00:32:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do think that West Ham game, however gritty and nasty it was, did give a lot of encouragement. Bruno and Tonali and Jolinton all played well in that and they are the key members, I think.
00:32:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
If they're on it, Newcastle are on it and just leave it just leave it to Isaac.
00:32:26
Kev
This is it. This is it.
00:32:30
Kev
Oh, this is it.
00:32:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, it's very exciting. Thank you very much indeed, Kevin. And thank you very much indeed, Nicola, for joining me in this preview of the Carabao final. I've got butterflies already.
00:32:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
God knows how i'm going to last out until Sunday.
00:32:43
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So have
00:32:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that's it. I guess we're back on Sunday night. Not Kevin. He's at the game itself.
00:32:52
Kev
Yep.
00:32:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Lucky man.
00:32:52
Kev
I won't be there.
00:32:53
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Go on, Kevin.
00:32:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're back on Sunday night.
00:32:53
Kev
I will leave a voice note.
00:32:54
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Enjoy three minutes.
00:32:54
Kev
oh I'll leave a voice note. And if we win for my take up the whole episode, but download which part you want and put it in.
00:32:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
It will be funny.
00:33:02
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Absolutely. We will.
00:33:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um good I'm guessing on so on Sunday night, if we win, the other four of us will definitely be all together doing the review.
00:33:10
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Absolutely.
00:33:11
Kev
