Podcast Introduction and Premier League Overview

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everybody and welcome to the Daily Newcastle podcast. It's me, Michael Grameslow and I'm your host today and I'm joined by Ian Mackay. How's it going Ian?
00:00:20
Iain
i It's going great, Michael. Are we on the prices right? Because that was a fabulous Leslie Crowther introduction you've done. Nobody will know who Leslie Crowther is.
00:00:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you kindly.
00:00:30
Iain
and know i'm good I'm doing good.
00:00:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, if you do.
00:00:32
Iain
I'm doing good. I've got a smile every day looking at that Premier League table and weighing up the game still to be played.
00:00:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Crack it.
00:00:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Cracking stuff. I mean, you've got us down to finishing second, and I think but on behalf of every Geordie in the nation, if we managed it, it's it would be a fantastic season.

Is Newcastle's Squad Stronger than Man United's?

00:00:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
But before that, we do have the the small task of some club from Manchester at the weekend. um As this is going out on Friday morning, our listeners will probably have a bit more of an idea what to expect today.
00:01:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um after Man United's fixture with Lyon on Thursday night. um It appears that ahead of our game, Lissandro Martinez, Amadiyalo, Matthias De Ligt and Kobe Maynou will be out for Man United.
00:01:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Four big names. We'll speak about them maybe a bit later on. But my question you, Ian, is obviously we mentioned some names missing there ah for Man United. But overall, that squad isn't good, isn't great.
00:01:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
But have the tables officially turned in Newcastle United's favour to the point where it's almost undeniable that Newcastle United have a better squad than Manchester United at the moment?
00:01:44
Iain
Michael, you're pushing at an open door asking me a question like that, aren't you? To be fair, ah thought we had a stronger squad when we when we met them in the Carabao Cup two years ago. um
00:01:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair.
00:01:56
Iain
And I certainly don't think that Newcastle have gone any further down since that. In fact, the togetherness of that team, maybe because there's nobody other than Tonari coming to it, is stronger. And Manchester United have continued to slip The guys last night on the man from Man U that we did on the crossover pod said this season they were hoping to improve on their worst Premier League finish in the Premier League era where they finished eighth.
00:02:27
Iain
And they're not going to get anywhere near that.
00:02:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no any it's definitely improved but the number and it's not really the number that you want to see improved but What I do want to sort of go through and in the first part is just to create our own side-by-side best 11.
00:02:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because I have a feeling there is a potential of Newcastle United doing an 11-0 sweep.

Goalkeeper Comparison: Pope vs. Onana

00:02:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And if we do, that's quite awkward.
00:02:51
Iain
Whitewash.
00:02:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
But ah if we disagree, I am going to try and be... ah less biased, let's say. I'm going to be... oh i am going to be biased, but I'm going to try and be less so. And if we disagree, we can put it audience and... Well, actually, I don't think we'll disagree. But we'll start off with Andre Onana versus Nick Pope.
00:03:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, what do you think about Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana?
00:03:20
Iain
ah Well, considering he's been coming to the team because he's meant to be really good with his feet, know he can suddenly ping a 60-yard ball that somebody takes down and controls immediately.
00:03:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Hmm.
00:03:32
Iain
Those Hollywood passes are very few and far between, though. um I think he's a good shot-stopper. I don't think he's as good as Nick Pope. I'm a bit on Eddie Howe's side where he thinks Nick Pope's the best shot-stopper in the league.
00:03:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I'll agree.
00:03:47
Iain
One thing that Onana... wins hands down is the likelihood of a rig, the likelihood of a real flanger being dropped. and watched quite a lot of Manchester United in last year's European competitions and the it was dangerous when they went two or three goals ahead because that seemed to get to Inanna, who was determined single-handedly to when um to try and end up with a draw
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:19
Iain
However it worked.
00:04:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:20
Iain
Some of them were, well, um speak I was speechless. On his day, he's a fabulous keeper.
00:04:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:04:28
Iain
But I'm not sure he can play a full 90 minutes without one or two errors of judgment, shall we say.
00:04:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I completely agree. i think his debut was ah a good indication of that when they played Wolves. Wolves should have had a penalty from an absolute clanger from Onana. And um I think it's interesting that...
00:04:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
um but Matic came out former Man United player so basically said that Onana was the worst Man United goalkeeper in history now I don't really think that is the case but would you say and a combined 11 between Newcastle and Man United Nick Pope gets the edge over Andre Onana
00:05:07
Iain
I would say Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka. Probably John Ruddy gets the edge over Anana because, to be fair, you're giving an away team or you're giving the opposition a goal start if you have Anana in goal, I think.
00:05:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
who
00:05:26
Iain
I know that's a bit harsh, but just let's look. If somebody else can be bothered, and I can't because it would mean I'd have to watch all the Man United's games, but That's what it seems like.
00:05:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I agree.
00:05:37
Iain
It's always it'd always been written about. Anana's at fault for that one.
00:05:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:42
Iain
No good.
00:05:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And the next one, I am going to say it's probably one of it's probably the most competitive out of all of the lineup, in my opinion. Maybe a couple of others. Diego Dallow versus who will be all right back on the day, Kieran Trippier.
00:06:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think?
00:06:02
Iain
m I still think, and certainly the form that Tripp's is in. Put him alongside the Trippier that was playing for the last 10 minutes against Everton last season, or the last five minutes against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup quarterfinal.
00:06:18
Iain
Dallow is excellent. I think Dallow's a good defender, but I think Trippier's a better defender.
00:06:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Agreed.
00:06:25
Iain
But there's no competition in terms of going forward. That's where Trippier's at, where he's at the premium.
00:06:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:31
Iain
His is crossing...
00:06:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spread the butt.
00:06:34
Iain
His dead ball delivery, fantastic. Dallow's a fullback, I think, isn't he? He's not a wingback. He doesn't go up and down.
00:06:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:41
Iain
He doesn't go past players very well. No, I think Trippi is in there. Sorry, Dallow. ah I like him. He's a good player, but not as good as Trippi.
00:06:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I agree. I think Dallow's probably one of Man United's standout players, to be honest. And it's straight' strange because when he signed, he was hated by Man United fans. But he's really grown into that role.
00:07:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I do agree. Trippier on form is definitely over

Best Centre-Backs: Newcastle vs. Manchester United

00:07:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
him. Now, I could do sent up to one centre-back versus one centre-back, but I just want you to pick two from these four players.
00:07:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fabian Shaw... Lenny Yorow, Harry Maguire, and Dan Byrne. Who would you go for?
00:07:26
Iain
and It wouldn't necessarily have been the same in previous seasons, but I would have to go for Bernard Shaw. They're form. They're playing fantastically well at the moment.
00:07:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I agree.
00:07:38
Iain
um Really good. Really good. Shaw's got his form back. His crossfield passes and his long balls are really coming off. And Harry Maguire is very good at that as well.
00:07:53
Iain
think Harry Maguire has really recovered. He's a strong character. He's really recovered from... The joke that he'd become almost two years ago, and I'm not picking our two just because I don't rate either of the other two.
00:07:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, yeah.
00:08:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:06
Iain
I quite like the look of Jorro, but I don't think he's i't think he's performed for long enough for me to know what his real standard is. But I have seen him play really, really well.
00:08:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I agree. Yeah, I think in two, three years' time, we probably do sit there and say, oh, you know what? Lenny Jorow in two, three years may be better than what Fabian Shaw and Dan Byrne are now.
00:08:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And to be honest, I i love Harry Maguire as a player.
00:08:28
Iain
Correct.
00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
i I actually wish we'd signed him um a few years ago when we were linked. I think he's a fantastic defender. He just doesn't suit that manite the way Man United play. it And to be honest, he...
00:08:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I say I would have loved him to sign for Newcastle. He probably wouldn't have suited the way we play. um But damn it suits Dan Byrne. So we could have made it work for Harry Maguire. But I do agree at the moment, I would say Fabian Shaw and Dan Byrne.
00:08:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I do think a couple of years ago, Maguire probably would have got in. And then in a couple of years, Jorah would have got in. So it is 4-0 currently to Newcastle. But ah this was a lot tighter, I'd say, in the defence. Now, on the left back,
00:09:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, Man United have their new sign-in from Lecce, Patrick Dorgue.
00:09:13
Iain
but
00:09:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle United have the player who we originally said had no left foot and then has turned out to have one of the best left foots I've seen. Well, it's a bit of an oral reaction, but a very good left foot in Tino Liveramento.
00:09:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the new sign-in, Dorgue, for Manchester United, or the revelation that has become Tino Liveramento for left-back?
00:09:39
Iain
Again, put it got to be Tina. England. right back, although it looked as if Lewis Hall being missing could be a real spanner in the works for the rest of the season.
00:09:50
Iain
But who knew that our class England right back would be even better playing on the left?
00:09:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a left back. Yeah.
00:09:57
Iain
Because he's better going forward playing down the left, whether that's because he can cut in and use his right foot. but he But we've seen overlapping. He put the cross in for the golden first goal in the Carabao Cup.
00:10:10
Iain
He put the cross in after two minutes for Murphy to have a simple tap in at the back post. Him and Barnes seem to have a really good um understanding ah in the same way that Hall and Gordon have a good understanding.
00:10:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:25
Iain
But I haven't seen Hall and Barnes match up like that yet.
00:10:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'd agree.
00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I'd agree.
00:10:29
Iain
But I think Dorgoo, by the way, has looked a good player, but he's still settling in, isn't he
00:10:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. Yeah, he's really energetic, really good player, but probably not on Livermanto's

Midfield Dominance: Tonali vs. Casemiro

00:10:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
level right now. Now, the whitewash is the one that's got no chance is probably Casemiro against Sandro Tonali. I think we both agreed on Tonali, yeah.
00:10:51
Iain
Absolutely.
00:10:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Tom Casemiro, if you get compared to someone who works in a kebab shop, you're probably not going to be anywhere near the level of Sandro Tonali. The other one in midfield, the one that probably needs explained, obviously Man Utd play with the back five, their third centre-back.
00:11:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
is the one that's a bit more advanced. Noah Masurawi. I've compared him alongside Joe Linton just because Joe Linton's been a third centre-back at times for Newcastle this season. Masurawi or Joe Linton? Obviously very different players, um so it is a difficult one.
00:11:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that was sort of the the match-up of I've kind of got to just put two together.
00:11:29
Iain
Right, well, that i think that's harsh on Maseroui as well.
00:11:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:34
Iain
He's another young lad who looks very, very promising.
00:11:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:11:37
Iain
ah but
00:11:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:11:39
Iain
But Joe Linton's a vital cog in that midfield. i I call them Brunali-ton now, Michael, because I think all three of them just come as one.
00:11:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:47
Iain
It's one machine, it's so well balanced that you'd have to pick all three of them to play in the midfield.
00:11:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well oiled, yeah.
00:11:54
Iain
And I don't know where that leaves Bruno Fernandes, but he wouldn't get in Newcastle's midfield.
00:11:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
No. And I've put Bruno Fernandes in one of the more advanced positions um alongside a couple of others.
00:12:05
Iain
all right
00:12:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
so and The remaining centre midfield position ah is Bruno Gamares on the Newcastle side, obviously, against Manuel Ugarte, obviously the former PSG man, now Man United midfielder.
00:12:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you rate Ugarte or is he nowhere near Bruno's level?
00:12:22
Iain
ah no it while till a bruno Bruno is the best midfielder in the Premier League in my opinion when he's on his game and
00:12:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow. Yeah.
00:12:31
Iain
he's a leader as well. And I think the whole team feeds off him. He's an emotional player. But you need that, I think, to overcome the adversity of, for example, a two-legged semi-final against Arsenal or a final against Liverpool.
00:12:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:48
Iain
and I do rate Ugarte. we We spanked Manchester United in the first half when we went to Old Trafford.
00:12:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:12:56
Iain
because they started with Ericsson and Casemiro in midfield, he just got completely bypassed and overrun.
00:13:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:02
Iain
was Ugati who came on and certainly plugged a lot of gaps and made it a lot more difficult in the second half.
00:13:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:13:13
Iain
And that's the most direct influence on second half finish 0-0. Another was a a large part of us just containing things because we had a lovely win there.
00:13:24
Iain
But Agarte is a great player. I just don't think he's a Bruno Farnan...
00:13:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:13:28
Iain
He's a Bruno Guimara yet.
00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I 100% agree. And then in the front three, there's probably one that's, well, actually I say Casemiro versus Donale was one-sided. You've got Rasmus Hoyland and alex Alexander Izak up against each other.
00:13:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Izak is obviously the winner there.
00:13:43
Iain
He's a
00:13:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So we have the two wings or the two center attacking midfielders, should we say, for Man United. Garnaccio, who's been playing more frequently on the right, so I've paired him up against Jacob Murphy.
00:13:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think about that one? The young Argentine versus arguably a cult hero at Newcastle right now.
00:14:04
Iain
Cool. it's Yeah, that's a close one. Garnaccio is currently in ah a, apparently when he's been playing on the left and starting, he's very selfishly keeps cutting in and and and having shots that either go into the back row of the stand or spin off the top of his foot and go out for a throw in.
00:14:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:14:29
Iain
Now, I did see him do a few of those against Nottingham Forest.
00:14:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh.
00:14:33
Iain
I think he had six shots outside the box, none of which were on target. um That was him coming off the left. The point they made last night was they want Garnaccio to come off the bench, either left or right, because he's much more effective coming off the bench.
00:14:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh
00:14:48
Iain
um Straight matchup with Jacob Murphy and starting on the right-hand side
00:14:56
Iain
is very close.
00:14:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
but I tell you what, shall we give money?
00:14:58
Iain
and i think he I think if he's out of form at the moment, Garnaccio is out of form and low on confidence, I'd have to go with Jacob Murphy, who's the exact opposite.
00:15:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:09
Iain
He's playing out of his skin because his confidence is absolutely sky high.
00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:13
Iain
And he still yet might get an England call-up, Michael.
00:15:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:15:17
Iain
You might have been right there.
00:15:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's going to happen. It's got to happen. But what I was actually going to potentially say is should we throw Manchester United a bit of a bone and say, we do the same as we did the centre-backs and throw the wingers in together. So you'd have Garnaccio, Murphy, Bruno Fernandes, I'm aware is more of a central player, but he is their attacking player, and Anthony Gordon together.
00:15:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then I imagine it would be Fernandes and Gordon.
00:15:44
Iain
Well, I tell you what, if you left Gordon out, because I don't think he'll start tomorrow or Sunday, i think it'll still be Barnes.
00:15:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, could say Harvey Barnes.
00:15:53
Iain
I think i would then have Fernandes and Barnes.
00:15:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. thats Yeah. To be honest, that works perfectly fine with me. And that means that Newcastle United don't have an 11-0 clean sweep. Told you we weren't going to be biased.
00:16:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's instead 10-1, which unfortunately won't be the scoreline at the weekend. But if it's anywhere as dominant for Newcastle, we'll be very, very happy.
00:16:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And well on that...
00:16:21
Iain
I think but one thing Michael just before you whiz to the advert which is so late honestly it's and it' later than one of Casemiro's tackles this advert and
00:16:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
right ah we We have a lot to talk about. 100%. Yeah.
00:16:36
Iain
if Ahmad wasn't injured he would definitely play right wing instead of Murphy he would be in um and if Martinez wasn't injured
00:16:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
yes
00:16:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
hundred percent
00:16:46
Iain
At centre-half, I think I would find a place for him at centre-half, probably with Byrne, because i can't have two short arses playing centre-half.
00:16:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:16:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:16:58
Iain
I've got to have a big galoot to head something clear.
00:17:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
True.
00:17:01
Iain
But I really do like Martinez as a centre-half. We hope that he stays on the pitch for the whole game, because he is prone to the odd red card, isn't he? But I do rate those players.
00:17:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, just a bit.
00:17:11
Iain
But they're injured, so they they weren't considered for our combined eleventh.
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, exactly.

Is This the Weakest Manchester United Squad Ever?

00:17:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, on that note, let's go to Bionique.
00:18:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
We get it. We've partnered with Bayern.
00:18:06
Iain
don't
00:18:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
We don't need to get it. so I'm going to assume there's a loop on that. And you know what? There is a loop on Newcastle United beating Manchester United. We're currently on our best...
00:18:14
Iain
want a link!
00:18:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah ah We're currently on our best run of fixtures against Manchester United since 1935, where Newcastle won 10 out of 18 games against the Red Devils.
00:18:23
Iain
I want
00:18:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that included a 7-4 and a 7-1 victory.
00:18:26
Iain
a link! one
00:18:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
14 goals in two games against Man United.
00:18:33
Iain
feeling
00:18:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I could only dream. Now, those days are obviously long gone. um Newcastle have won four of the last five between the two since the Cup final. And the game that we did lose...
00:18:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
was obviously the game that meant Newcastle United didn't get European football last year. So when this when the stakes are high, Manchester United have still gotten the better of Newcastle.
00:18:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
But considering Man United are dwindling their thumbs in the bottom half, the stakes aren't high. But would you say that this is the worst Manchester United squad in your memory?
00:19:12
Iain
Well, what I'd say first, Michael, was what the hell were they doing with their thumbs? Twiddling their thumbs.
00:19:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dwindling. I said dwindling instead of twiddling, didn't I?
00:19:19
Iain
Dwindling? Yeah, that's okay. it's Yeah, sorry to pull you up on it in public, but, you know, I'm not sort of a prat, so I did it.
00:19:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hey, dwindle. It works.
00:19:30
Iain
I'm sorry. But I genuinely didn't hear what you said. Is it the worst Manchester United side that I've ever seen? Did you say? Because I did...
00:19:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:19:39
Iain
i did i didn't I wasn't there, but I remember watching it on shoot for anybody else who used to watch ITV in the early 1970s.
00:19:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ooh.
00:19:48
Iain
I remember watching the highlights of Newcastle beating Manchester United 4-1 when Manchester United included ah Bobby Charlton and George Best in their team ah in the season that Manchester United were relegated.
00:20:02
Iain
Now, I don't know when that was, 72, 73, something like
00:20:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow. Around then, yes.
00:20:05
Iain
like that I'm not sure Dennis Law was playing, but that was a team ah full of stars, but obviously full of stars that were waning at that point because they dropped into the old second division at that.
00:20:20
Iain
Certainly in my memory for the Premier League, this current Manchester United side, as it is way exceeding their worst ever finished last year, must be one of the poorest sides ever to represent Manchester United.
00:20:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:20:33
Iain
However, i would say that the Ten Hag led team that we played in January had a lot less of a clue than Ruben Arammer inside three months later on.
00:20:48
Iain
I do think genuinely, if you look at the results and you look at the performances, that you can see green shoots coming.
00:20:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:20:57
Iain
that The hope for Man U is all in these young kids that are coming through, orchestrated by
00:21:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. Yeah.
00:21:02
Iain
by bruno and And if if you take the one or two old heads leading a a team full of hungry, ambitious, super fit youngsters, then Man United are a coming force.
00:21:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:21:18
Iain
Might be two or three years before we see them fighting for Champions League places again. But I do think that that that's the way to that's the way to to make a battle of it on Sunday, is to bring Collier in,
00:21:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Uh, it
00:21:33
Iain
um I can't remember the name of the centre forward that Tom was saying he wanted to to take Hoyland's place.
00:21:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
will be.
00:21:40
Iain
Yes, yes.
00:21:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:43
Iain
um And it might be a time for them to do that because our observation was that Manchester United's season relies on them winning Europa League and they're playing now, tonight, Wednesday night.
00:21:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:56
Iain
They're playing next Thursday night. Sorry, Thursday night. They're playing next Thursday in the second leg. So all we need is for tonight's game to finish quite close. And I think a lot of the elder older hands might well be rested on Sunday, which will make it even more,
00:22:14
Iain
which should give us even more confidence a positive result.
00:22:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and to be fair, you just mentioned Manchester United are obviously playing now as we're recording this right now, and I can actually just report, obviously everyone who's listening will already know this, but Lyon currently 1-0 up against Manchester United, so it is arguably, yeah, it's a perfect start if when you consider for Newcastle on Sunday, because Man Utd are going to have to throw all guns and go all guns blazing at that next tie.
00:22:32
Iain
Oh, really?
00:22:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, Hopefully we see a few more of the young guns against Man United because I would love to see us decimate them. But you spoke about the Man United squad there and you mentioned one player in particular, Bruno Fernandes, alongside those youngsters sort of leading them forward.
00:23:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he's always a worry for me because I think he's such a weasel. that if there's emotions running in that side, we've seen what Bruno Gamares is like.
00:23:05
Iain
so
00:23:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've seen what Joe Linton's like. If someone gets under their skin, you can't see that anger come out. And I think the only way they beat us is if they get in our heads and we make those mistakes.
00:23:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And per Fernandes is going to be a prime version of that. i'm all I'm more fearful of the anger of our side than his ability. He is a good player, but it's one of those. Do you think potentially...
00:23:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know we're a professional side. Eddie Howe always has us being professional. But do you think Fernandes is going to look at the likes of Bruno, Joe Linton and go, I could probably get under this game and maybe give Man United an advantage?
00:23:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because they're going to need it.
00:23:50
Iain
He could try, but I mean, you not think that McAllister would have had a little bit of a go at that in the Carabao Cup final?
00:23:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was too busy trying to mock Dan Byrne.
00:23:58
Iain
and yeah There are players like that in every side, Michael.
00:24:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a good point.
00:24:03
Iain
Players like that in every side. and You know, I'm sure the Leicester players were, it was a tactic for them. What do you call him? Ndidi is a player just like that.
00:24:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:17
Iain
He didn't get close enough to him to do anything. because
00:24:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
True.
00:24:20
Iain
because it was just so more much more superior.
00:24:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
True.
00:24:25
Iain
I think Man United will give us a better game than Leicester did, for sure, whoever they pick.
00:24:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
think they have to.
00:24:30
Iain
But i don't think that I don't think our boys will fly a fan. i think it's more likely that Fernandes will get frustrated and disappointed by Man United going a goal or two behind in the first half an hour.
00:24:44
Iain
it's Fernandes is more likely to get a red card than any of our midfielders.
00:24:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you've just answered my second question.
00:24:49
Iain
Eru hér fyrst? Ego. that
00:24:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
My second question was, do you not think that the Newcastle midfield might have the exact same plan? So you've already answered my question. well
00:25:00
Iain
yeahgo
00:25:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chemistry, wavelength, we know all about it. But one player who actually is on the same wavelength as Ruben Amorim this season is Patrick Dogu, the left-back.

Left-Back Potential: Dorgue vs. Newcastle's Defense

00:25:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
We mentioned him earlier.
00:25:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I really like him. Signing from Lecce, I imagine it's because being at a smaller team in Italy... You don't really have the massive egos of a Casemiro, for example.
00:25:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And he looks like the only player who actually wants to give 100% and really cares. um So maybe that's just the reason I like him. But think he's a fantastic player. But then at the same time...
00:25:37
Iain
Yeah.
00:25:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm looking at our left backs and I'm thinking, Dogu's great, but I don't even think, I don't think he'd probably be third choice behind Hall and Livermanto. Maybe even Trippier gets in there, but it's it's hard because this is the first time of I've really looked Newcastle defence and go, that's really good in most positions.
00:25:54
Iain
yeah
00:25:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, we'd rather have bottom and back, but it's insane how defensively sound we are.
00:26:00
Iain
yeah
00:26:04
Iain
I don't think, Michael, i'm not sure I'm not sure that we need to be as tight as we were playing against Arsenal, playing against Liverpool. Manchester United are really struggling in front of goal.
00:26:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:26:15
Iain
They haven't scored since the international break. And I mean, they've had some good results. You know, i think they were a narrow loss to Forrest.
00:26:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:23
Iain
They drew and should have and looked like they should have won at home in a goalless draw against Manchester City.
00:26:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:30
Iain
They haven't scored and they ain't going to win if they don't score.
00:26:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good.
00:26:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:34
Iain
And you're then asking, well, will Newcastle be able to score? I think over 90 minutes they will be able to score, which will put us through on a win.
00:26:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Within five minutes.
00:26:44
Iain
Tom's guess last night from and from the Manchester United podcast was that they would be beaten 2-0. And I think that's wishful thinking, personally, because I think even the strongest team will have a few players w rested.
00:26:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah, 100%.
00:27:02
Iain
because there'll be they'll be looking at this second leg game against Lyon.
00:27:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep,
00:27:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's
00:27:07
Iain
And I fear for them, I do.
00:27:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
hundred percent
00:27:10
Iain
If they put the kids in, that is a big atmosphere to tuck kids in.
00:27:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah but
00:27:15
Iain
It might inspire them, or it might scare them to death.
00:27:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, pressure makes diamonds and we've seen it with Newcastle midfielder in the past. Matty Longstaff was thrown in against Man United, got the goal that won us the game. um So it might happen with Man United. I can't really see it. I think we're professional enough to to come out with a good performance. I think Leicester...
00:27:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
We didn't really get out of first gear, if I'm honest. um I thought Fabian Cher taking and shots from the halfway line after 10 minutes showed you that we weren't really that bothered about the quality of the opposition, and rightfully so.
00:27:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
But on that note, Ian, I'm going to ask you if you could do the second advert of the pod, this one from Zencastr.
00:28:00
Iain
I've gone old school again, Michael. I hope you don't mind. It's just that's the one I've got on my computer still.
00:28:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh.
00:28:05
Iain
I'll have to get the new one sent to me.
00:28:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Doesn't mind me.
00:28:07
Iain

Global Sports Podcast Network
Fantastic. Thank you very much. Now, Ian, we've spoken about Manchester United. We've done our due diligence. Let's talk about the tune.

Can Newcastle Continue Their Winning Streak?

00:28:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've won our last four.
00:28:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Our last fixture against Leicester, as we mentioned, very easy. Are you confident that Newcastle will pick up there? Well, you've just mentioned. You think maybe Man Utd fans picking 2-0 was a bit, let's say, generous to them.
00:29:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Are you that confident that we'll pick up the fifth win in a row?
00:29:17
Iain
yeah I'm confident that we will win um given we approach the game with the right to attitude.
00:29:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:29:25
Iain
i sat through home games this season against West Ham, against Bournemouth, against Fulham. I sat through all of those games.
00:29:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:29:36
Iain
And if I'm honest, Bournemouth were excellent. I don't think we could have done much about that. They were just so good on that day. and We ran out of ideas against West Ham and gave some stupid goals away.
00:29:47
Iain
But I don't want to do that against Manchester United. So if we go in with the right attitude, I think we will win. and
00:29:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:29:56
Iain
looking I had somebody trying to tell me that, oh, well, they've lost three out of the last six home games. That's in a run where we've won 11 of the last 15 games. So, ah you know, we're in really good form.
00:30:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:30:08
Iain
I think whoever it was that did the form tables for the last 15 games... Had Liverpool top and Newcastle a point behind in second. And I think that's where we are in terms of form within the Premier League since Christmas.
00:30:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:30:23
Iain
So, yes, and ah I think we'll win.
00:30:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah To be honest, I absolutely agree.
00:30:28
Iain
I'm not doing a prediction yet.
00:30:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, not yet. And to be honest, that I was about to give you exactly the same stat of Newcastle winning 11 of their 15, losing the other four, obviously, um since December 14th.
00:30:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Liverpool have won exactly the same. No one's won more. But at the same time, ah victory, which would make it 12 out of 16, would mean that Newcastle would be the fourth team to pick up the double, winning both games, of a Manchester United- in the Premier League, and that has not happened since 1958.
00:31:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
nineteen fifty eight So if there was any doubts at all that this is the worst Marry Night side in history, that tells you that's what it is.
00:31:12
Iain
you.
00:31:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And obviously, they haven't lost three in a row at St. James' as well since 1970, so there's going to be a lot of records broken. Mm-hmm.
00:31:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
as to how i feel the game's goingnna go um as well but before we get into that ah do want to get your opinion on a particular newcastle player that you think love and excellent game it man ied on sunday
00:31:42
Iain
Right. um I mean, I'm expecting, I'm expecting good things from Isaac and Murphy together, their telepathy. I'm expecting Joe Linton to be the destroyer.
00:31:54
Iain
I'm expecting Tonali and Bruno to have that telepathic link up where one's sitting, one's going forward. And it's not always, it's not always the same way they swap.
00:32:05
Iain
And I think that's what makes them so difficult to pick up. But my, guess for man of the match is going to be Harvey Barnes.
00:32:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh.
00:32:15
Iain
He's going to do something special. He's looked much more involved, much more threatening. He's gone past the fullback a few times in these last few games.
00:32:26
Iain
He's got a fabulous relationship with Tino. And I think Tino will help him get into those positions where we where he cuts in and puts one in the top corner.
00:32:36
Iain
He was very, very close against Leicester with one of them.
00:32:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
You was.
00:32:40
Iain
And it was another one that Connor Cody cut out. So he could have done it twice against Leicester. I just think they're going to start coming off. They've had another game together.
00:32:51
Iain
So their understanding will be just that fractionally bit quicker. I think we'll see. That's my guess. Harvey Barnes. What, a brace?
00:32:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a. Whoa.
00:32:58
Iain
I won't go for a hat-trick, but Harvey Barnes could easily be them for the winner.
00:33:03
Iain
He could be the match winner.
00:33:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Back-to-back braces for Newcastle wingers.
00:33:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd love to see that. And I do agree with Harvey Barnes. I think since being forced to come into the side, i mean, well, not against his will by any means. I'm sure he was delighted about Anthony Gordon's suspension.
00:33:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
um To being coming into the side at West Ham, I think he's been arguably one of Newcastle's best players behind maybe Sandro Tonalo. Tonalo? Sandro Tonali.
00:33:29
Iain
and Tino Livramenti.
00:33:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you can tell had a point. ah judge
00:33:34
Iain
don't forget him
00:33:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Behind those two, fantastically.
00:33:36
Iain
it
00:33:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah but sit Between Tanalo and Tina, um I do think Harvey's been fantastic.
00:33:44
Iain
so
00:33:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think it's one of those where West Ham, we expected to see something. He wasn't fantastic, but he was very good. Liverpool, again, you expected nothing, very solid. And I think it's one of those, he's coming he's going from strength to strength.
00:34:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it really is going to give Eddie Howe some problems when Anthony Gordon is back because you've got two in form, well, I see in form wingers Murphy coming back into form a little bit um wasn't great the games beforehand but you've got three wingers there who are really really good now
00:34:18
Iain
Yeah. Well, you say winger as well, Michael, but of course it's Harvey Barnes in the centre-forward position following up the save from Joel Linton's shot that's there to tap in the third goal against Leicester.
00:34:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
true yeah yeah he's got he's
00:34:29
Iain
Right. Six-yard box, tap in. That's a centre-forwards move.
00:34:35
Iain
So it's not... He's got a lot in his box.
00:34:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he's not just a standard winger. That's that's one of the brilliant things. think Gordon, yeah, I would agree he's more of a traditional winger, but Barnes just loves cutting inside. He loves being in and in the box and cutting inside or getting on the end of something. We saw a few times against Leicester, Murphy crossing the ball and Barnes is there at the back post. And you mentioned earlier, Connor Cody, he cut out a lot.
00:35:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think a lot of them were directed in Barnes' direction, particularly as Isaac Alvarez,
00:35:04
Iain
honey
00:35:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Didn't even manage to get a shot away, which broke down a lot of bets, I'm sure. But if we're talking about bets, you can't have bets without making predictions.

Match Predictions: Newcastle vs. Manchester United

00:35:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, Ian, is it the usual?
00:35:18
Iain
Well, look, eight i but I broke from the usual in my prediction. i thought we would absolutely stuff Leicester. had us around to win 5 or 6-0.
00:35:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:35:27
Iain
I tell you what, at half-time, I thought I was bang on. was That was such a boring second half.
00:35:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. It was horrendous.
00:35:32
Iain
um So I'm not going to go quite so gung-ho as that. I do think that it could be it could be as straightforward as that, though. It depends how many you go into this game.
00:35:44
Iain
I just thought, if they know, if the team, if he's got to play the players who are going to play the second leg against Lyon, and they're 2-1 down, let's say, something like that, then even those players on Sunday, I don't think put...
00:35:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:35:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:36:02
Iain
100% effort into the 50-50 tackles. They're not going to want to get injured.
00:36:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:36:06
Iain
I just think that the circumstances are stacked in Newcastle's favour. I predicted last night on the crossover podcast that we would win 3-1. One, because I always do.
00:36:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:36:17
Iain
But I didn't against Leicester, you see, so I don't always do. But I think 3-1 is fair enough. um and And I think the goal at Man United's goal would be an own goal. How about that? To really rub the salt in.
00:36:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh now well if that comes off definitely we should all have had a bet on it because the 3-1 ian mckay it's always there the only thing is It's that Man United goal.
00:36:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And to be honest, ah i I don't see it.
00:36:42
Iain
Thank you.
00:36:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
um i think if they play the kids, they've got a chance. And by the kids, I obviously don't mean like the under-16s. I mean the likes of Obi Collier, like you mentioned. um I can see it being pretty much the same as it was when we played them...
00:36:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
earlier in the season. 2-0, I think, will pretty much have too much for them in midfield. Tenali and Bruno, they've got more than enough about them to get the better of Yagate and Casemiro.
00:37:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
leaves either well Even Joe Linton is part of that. One of them is going to be free pretty much at all times. so And it's probably going to be Sandro Tonali who will dictate the game. um I do think we'll score early.
00:37:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think we'll see what we've seen a few times from Newcastle this season. They get an early goal. They get a lead going into half-time. And do they just try and slow the game down.
00:37:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we saw against the likes of Forrest. didn't work as well as what we'd wanted it to. Manchester United are a very different side and I don't think they'll have enough to get even a goal against Newcastle, unfortunately.
00:37:50
Iain
okay
00:37:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think an in-form Man United, probably different, but right now, I think we're just too good for them.
00:37:58
Iain
I get where you're coming from on that, Michael. I would point out that, because I must have been, i haven't got tickets for Sunday, the ones that Joanne couldn't get me, which is a shame, but I have been at the last four.
00:38:10
Iain
I was there when Matty Logstaff scored his winner.
00:38:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:38:14
Iain
and The Newcastle crowd is... always up for Man U. I think it's still the biggest draw of the season.
00:38:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course.
00:38:22
Iain
I don't think that crowd will allow Newcastle to take a ah course like they did against Leicester. And certainly, playing Manchester United, we've never misfired against them, other than in that cup final.
00:38:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:38:38
Iain
And certainly not at St James' Park. We are always up for it at St James' Park. ah Sunday afternoon, maybe we already know that... There's been some surprise points dropped by Forrest, by Arsenal, by Man City.
00:38:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
True.
00:38:52
Iain
And there's a little bit of extra incentive there to really so secure the Champions League spot.
00:38:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:38:59
Iain
um i think I think it'll be more one-sided than you're giving them. I don't think we'll hold them off. i think we'll keep going.
00:39:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:39:06
Iain
You it's all about goal difference.
00:39:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:39:08
Iain
We're four goals behind Chelsea. So they'll want to get that the right way around in our favour as quickly as possible.
00:39:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
true
00:39:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's a great point. And that, will to be honest, we'll leave it on that. That is all from us as Newcastle take on Manchester. Well, the Manchester Reds, should we say, on Sunday.
00:39:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Which team will reign supreme? Which team will be the real United? And why will it be Newcastle? And no, that's not a prediction. That is a spoiler. See you later.
