Introduction and Guest Introduction

Global Sports Podcast Network
no Hello and welcome to Daily Newcastle. My name is Ian Mackay. I'm hosting tonight. I have my black and white buddy, the Ginger Ninja, Mrs. Joanne Ayres.
00:00:23
Jo
It's alright.
00:00:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry, I just divorced you there, Pat. Who's joining me. And tonight we are joined by Kieran McGinley and Tom Cairns from the Daily Manchester United podcast because we're together going to cross over and preview Sunday's game.
00:00:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
at St James' Park, 4.30 kick-off, which is a super, super important league game for us. And I suspect, but we'll find out, probably a bit of a distraction in between two very important European games for Manchester United.
00:00:57
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:00:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I'm interested, Kieran and Tom, to know if that if that is the

Manchester United's Season Analysis

00:01:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
case. Manchester United, and quite hilariously for the rest of us,
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
have really, really struggled this year and have left themselves with absolutely no jeopardy whatsoever in the Premier League. Could win all seven of the last games and not get anywhere near Europe. And of course, nowhere near getting dragged into any relegation battle.
00:01:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
How do you approach that? do does does Does that mean that Europa League is accepted by the fans as being the main priority and the league can just work itself out?
00:01:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or do you still want to get those points on the board in the in the premiership
00:01:41
Kieran McGinley - MU
We're still looking for that magical 40 points, isn't it? That legend 40 points in your save from relegation.
00:01:46
Jo
I love that.
00:01:47
Kieran McGinley - MU
that they We're on 38 at the moment. It would be nice to break 40. Yeah, I think...
00:01:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
not on so not on Sunday Kieran not on Sunday
00:01:55
Jo
Please no.
00:01:55
Kieran McGinley - MU
Well, let's see. Let's see what happens. But yeah, I think Europa League has been welcome because we're undefeated in the entire competition so far. So that's been that's been a welcome change to what has been a pretty dismal Premier League. I've been saying towards the the start of this season that we can't have another season like last. We finished eight. it was our worst finish in the modern Premier League era.
00:02:15
Kieran McGinley - MU
So I'm eating humble pie at that one as well. So it's gone it's gone remarkably south quite quickly, but there's been some promising signs. There's still a chance for top half. i know when I know Tom has spoken previously about its Europa League or bust, haven't you, Tom?
00:02:31
Tom Cairns
Yeah, absolutely. But, you know, the Europa League is something that United have been used to for a number of seasons since Relics had retired. But it is our only hope if we are going to be playing in Europe at all next season, because I don't see us finishing high enough in the top half to even be, you know, within the phrase to qualify for Europe, depending on how when wins the domestic cups.
00:02:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:02:51
Tom Cairns
Because no new cars have already won the Cowboy Cup and we've got automatic qualification. and for the Conference League, but it looks like they're going to be heading for a higher tier UEFA competition. Hopefully it's the Champions League, really, because there are a few teams obviously up there which I don't

Newcastle's Prospects and Manchester United's Strategy

00:03:05
Tom Cairns
particularly like. But weirdly enough, I've always had a soft spot for Newcastle.
00:03:09
Tom Cairns
So if there was a team that know, other than ours, if I know that we can't do well, I'd be happy for Newcastle to to achieve something big for them this season.
00:03:18
Kieran McGinley - MU
Soft spot for Luke.
00:03:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Shucks, Tom, you're making Joe and I blush, mate.
00:03:20
Jo
thanks Tom i know you know you're my new favorite my new fan sorry Kieran you can be my second one Tom got in there first I'm sorry
00:03:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
You really are.
00:03:26
Tom Cairns
like Thanks a lot.
00:03:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
We can't possibly...
00:03:28
Kieran McGinley - MU
I know when I'm not wanted.
00:03:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
We can't possibly share what the yeah what the general Newcastle crowd's opinion of Manchester United is after that. and won't do. I won't do. I don't think...
00:03:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think there's any hate for Manchester United this season from us because but and more pity, to be honest, because you've got some great players who just haven't performed over and over and over again so bad you ship them off and then they become world beaters again, like Anthony, like Rashford.
00:03:53
Kieran McGinley - MU
Thank you.
00:04:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Going back a little bit further, how could you let Alanga go? Alanga is Kev's. top of Kev's list, wish list for who Newcastle start spending their Saudi millions on to bring into the Newcastle side.
00:04:14
Jo
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:04:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you let him go. let him go and kept Anthony.
00:04:23
Kieran McGinley - MU
Yeah, it's interesting because that's a topic that's actually come up previously on a couple of episodes ago. you know We let Alanga go, but the feeling from us is that he was not going to be used in our system. We would have brought in another winger or whatever. Alanga was just one of those that was always going to be a squad player on the fringes.
00:04:40
Kieran McGinley - MU
To see him go to Forest and score against us, but to see him doing well, I think he's better than and what he could have achieved at Manchester United and just sort of fading away into... ignominy like a lot of Manchester United talents have in the past so it's good to see him actually being a good Premier League player
00:04:52
Jo
True.
00:04:58
Jo
Yeah.
00:05:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, look, we're going to come on to injuries and suspensions and who's available, who's not, what the team's going to be, that you think, later.
00:05:00
Jo
Sorry.
00:05:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But just in general, do you think that Ameren is looking at his squad. He's got three games in seven days, effectively.
00:05:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's the one either side of the Newcastle game that is surely his main priority when it comes to resting players, when it comes to not risking players. Does that mean that they'll have a kick on into the side that turns up to play at St. James' on Sunday?
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Tom,

Youth Opportunities and Team Focus

00:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
you tell me.
00:05:39
Tom Cairns
Yeah.
00:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
you you're You're the Europa League man.
00:05:42
Tom Cairns
Yeah, well, we've been in this situation before because remember the 2016-17 season where we played against the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham in the run-ins of the season. I think we had Europa League games on either side of those games.
00:05:42
Kieran McGinley - MU
Bye.
00:05:57
Tom Cairns
And we were able to use the Arsenal and Tottenham games to feel like some of these sort of young players a little bit. remember Tim Fosso-Mensa getting a few minutes underneath him. And of course, we gave the debut of Scott McTominay in the Manchester United senior team at Arsenal.
00:06:15
Tom Cairns
Even though we lost the game, it was so it still good to see him get some minutes under his belt. And I was thinking about the Newcastle game on Sunday and I was thinking to myself, who do I think could end up starting? I'd like to see Chido Obi get some minutes under his belt because we've been saying, Kieran, for some time that I think Chido Obi...
00:06:34
Tom Cairns
At this moment in time, at best he is a squad player, but I think he's someone who can do bits within the team.
00:06:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:06:40
Tom Cairns
And that's why I think it's worth giving him go, considering the form that Rasmus Hoyland has been in. Because I have to say, of all the strikers I've seen you know in a Manchester United team across the whole season, as far as the Premier League is concerned, Rasmus Hoyland is clearly not a Manchester United player.
00:06:57
Tom Cairns
I don't know what you would say to that.
00:07:02
Kieran McGinley - MU
Well, you know what? it's it's It's an honest assessment. I'll give you that, Tom. He's been right mainly running on cold this season and we sort of thought to ourselves, right, in European competition, that's where he really comes alive.
00:07:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:07:16
Kieran McGinley - MU
And he showed that in the Europa League early on. He showed that in the European competition last season. So it was a case of maybe he just needs to find that form. He had an injury last season, which sort of scuppered that just when he found some form, but it's never really recaptured that.
00:07:31
Kieran McGinley - MU
And I just think, yeah, we're 13th. we We've got nothing to play for in the Premier League. Why not throw in Chido Obi? Why not throw in Victor Moussa, who's got a hat full of goals against the Leeds under 18s? Probably you've all seen that by now.
00:07:45
Kieran McGinley - MU
Why not put one Victor Moussa? have we got to lose? you know We've had a strike force that has barely got seven or eight goals between them this season. I mean, that's that's that's poor from a Manchester United it side.
00:07:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think you'd sell that to Hoyland by saying he wants to keep him fresh for the European games? Or do you think you'd be saying, I'm so disappointed you, mate, I'm going to try some of these kids untested, even in the cauldron of a Newcastle team trying to hunt down Champions League places?
00:08:10
Jo
Yep.
00:08:15
Kieran McGinley - MU
both both sound good
00:08:17
Jo
Mm.
00:08:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're expecting, we're expecting and obviously, a sellout crowd, a huge atmosphere, because there's always a huge atmosphere when Man United come to town.
00:08:18
Tom Cairns
Mm-hmm.
00:08:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
and You know, it was the game we looked forward to because we had a chance of winning it, because we never had a chance of beating Liverpool or City or or Arsenal when Steve Bruce was in charge.
00:08:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we did win once or twice when Steve Bruce was in charge. And that's continued when Eddie is in charge. So, And it's a huge game for us. it really is.
00:08:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's quite nice, I think, that we've got eight games left. We've got Palace as our game in hand, which comes up on Wednesday and you're after the after the Man U game.
00:08:48
Jo
Yeah.
00:08:56
Jo
I can stay.
00:09:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's quite nice not having any European distractions. We can just focus on these eight cup finals, which I know is a cliche, but they are, without there being any other distractions for us. So, yeah, I i I would fear for Man U if they turned up without being fully on it.
00:09:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
We did that, went to Leicester, blitzed them, went two up after 10 minutes and but basically just sparred with them. We didn't get out a second gear, ended up winning 3-0.
00:09:30
Jo
We reached off after the halftime, didn't we?
00:09:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it was such a boring second half to watch, which is amazing when you're winning 3-0 away from home.
00:09:35
Jo
It was like...
00:09:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's say the second half was really dull, but it was, it was. But I know that's the same result you got at Leicester, of course, a couple of weeks earlier. So it should be close, I think, because I really do... I'm not i'm not fearful.
00:09:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not. I think we'll have too much for you. But I don't think you're in the disarray that you were in when we turned up and and beat you at Old Trafford in January.

Key Players and Predictions

00:10:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the green shoots are definitely coming through.
00:10:06
Jo
yeah
00:10:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's the young players that are that are providing a lot of them. Obviously, guided by Fernandes, who is a player that we didn't really like.
00:10:16
Kieran McGinley - MU
I
00:10:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Joe's our most hated player in a Premier League. He was in there. but But you can't deny i we can't den up We can't deny the consistency of his performance.
00:10:24
Jo
I hate him. I'm not going to lie. Okay.
00:10:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
He seems to have got over the sulkiness that he had last year when things were going bad and just kept going on with it.
00:10:39
Jo
Kieran, I'm with you.
00:10:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
but Not really.
00:10:40
Jo
Don't worry.
00:10:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not really.
00:10:41
Jo
No, I can't get that, Ian.
00:10:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:10:42
Jo
Ian, I'm not sure what you're look watching. Come on.
00:10:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, maybe it's because...
00:10:45
Jo
He's naturally sulky, isn't he? is Is it a Portuguese thing?
00:10:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe it's because Manchester United have had better results more recently than...
00:10:48
Jo
Is it? Or what is it?
00:10:49
Kieran McGinley - MU
specific
00:10:49
Jo
I don't
00:10:51
Kieran McGinley - MU
i
00:10:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
He hasn't had the opportunity to be silky.
00:10:55
Jo
know.
00:10:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's probably it.
00:10:57
Jo
Yeah.
00:10:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Look, OK, go on.
00:10:58
Kieran McGinley - MU
i will tell I will say he's been a better leader than he has been last season. I think he's shown improvements in in actually leading the squad.
00:11:05
Jo
Yeah.
00:11:06
Kieran McGinley - MU
i'm sure you I can't remember, Tom, if you agree with that sentiment or not.
00:11:10
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:11:10
Tom Cairns
Well, I've always liked Bruno since he came in in 2020. And I do do get why people have not liked him at times so because of his attitude and the way he confronts referees when decisions didn't go for him as though he should have had. I do agree that perhaps some of the decisions that went against him, he'd have reason to feel rather temperament about.
00:11:30
Tom Cairns
Like the the sending off against Tottenham this season, which was later rescinded. And then he got sent off again in the Europa League at Porto. which was no, there was no arguments on that one.
00:11:43
Tom Cairns
And that obviously brought a lot of acrimony, if that's the right word, on him in terms of the way he acts on a football pitch. But I think he' i think he's got his head down and just got on with it, really, because he knows the situation that United are in.
00:11:57
Tom Cairns
And he knows that it's not just him that's the problem.
00:11:59
Jo
you
00:12:00
Tom Cairns
It's the way the club has been run. It's the way... The system has had to change under Amarim from the moment he arrived. What I remember as well is that Ribbon Amarim arrived knowing that it wasn't the ideal time for him to arrive.
00:12:15
Tom Cairns
He wants to arrive in the summer, this summer coming up.
00:12:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:12:19
Tom Cairns
But you United said, no, you've got to come in now. So he kind of threw himself in the deep end, knowing that he was going to be working with a lot of dead wood. It has to be said.
00:12:28
Jo
Thank you.
00:12:29
Tom Cairns
Although, can he turn that dead wood into system where he knows that that team can actually play well together? I think there are a number of things he's got right so far.
00:12:40
Tom Cairns
He just needs some additional tools to make it work because the defense has actually improved when you think of it. It's the killer instincts going up front is where United is lacking.
00:12:51
Tom Cairns
And we saw it in the games against Forest and City where i don't think we had any, we had shots on target and against Forest, but don't think we had one against City on target as far as I can remember.
00:13:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
It certainly looked as if he should have won that game, though.
00:13:05
Kieran McGinley - MU
Mm-hmm.
00:13:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whether there were no shots on target or not, I thought you were on top. Look, a better pause. We're overrunning. Let's get our special guest, Mr.
00:13:11
Jo
hmm
00:13:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ken Davis. Can you do it from that side of the room, Ken? Just shout, mate.
00:13:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Cheers Ken, your money's in an envelope just on top of the counter in the kitchen. We'll see you next week. Back to part two. and Who's going to play for us then her and use? What other teams? Joanne, what do you think?
00:14:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
where Who are Newcastle starting?
00:14:14
Jo
I don't expect to see any changes. We know what Eddie's like. He loves playing his strongest team, no matter whether we've got three games in the space for a week. But I realistically expect exactly who's playing. The only change that might happen for me is Gordon coming back, but that obviously depends on his injury. But this injury wasn't supposed to be too bad. It was just some bruising on the thigh or, I don't know, that's the best it's been described as, isn't it, when he was off in England.
00:14:37
Jo
But for him, coming in for Barnes would probably the only change I kind of foresee. Other than that, do you really expect Eddie to change much? He loves not changing anything.
00:14:48
Jo
Let's get real. Obviously, I can't comment on the Man U team. You guys going have to fill me in there. But yeah I'm obviously pleased to hear that certain people are injured.
00:14:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. yeah
00:14:55
Jo
I won't lie. If Bruno could get injured as well, I'm not going to lie. I think we'd absolutely smash you guys. so i'm But I'll leave that one. But, yeah, I mean, obviously...
00:15:05
Jo
With Newcastle at the minute, we are playing really strong. No one deserves to be dropped as well. It's a strange one, isn't it? and But we had this discussion. I was talking with them Kevin Nick yesterday about it. And as much as we have got three games coming up and Kev was asking us the question of which game would you start like rotating on?
00:15:24
Jo
It's a strange one because I kind of said the Palace game maybe because as much as Man everyone's like, oh, we'll win. We can never take this for granted at all. You know, it's you guys aren't exactly on the worst of runs like Ian said before.
00:15:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:15:36
Jo
All right, we'll beat early in the season, but were you were playing worse then. We've got to take this game very seriously. And I think if I'm honest, how you guys come out and how you guys perform is very dependent on tomorrow's result.
00:15:48
Jo
If you guys happen to get some absolutely smashing result against Lyon and you're like goals and goals ahead, you can concentrate more on the league all of a sudden can't you because that second leg isn't really going to matter that much I don't say matter that much but you know what I mean you can protect it a lot easier can't you but so it's a strange one so I think I would love to know what the result is going to be tomorrow before I'd really see how the match is going to go on Sunday but I'll go in there confident but I don't see any changes really
00:16:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent. Kieran, I know you have to shoot before we finish. So I'm just going to pause. I'll check with Tom about the Man United side later.
00:16:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
You need to give us a prediction, Bud. You're not getting out of that by just sloping off early.
00:16:29
Kieran McGinley - MU
Oh, no. I thought I could. I'm going to stick to my guns, what I said on yesterday's episode of the Daily Manchester. I'm going to go I think it's going to be fairly open, but I think Joe's right. It's a game where we could show up. We haven't scored a goal since the international break, so it'll be quite nice to get one.
00:16:51
Kieran McGinley - MU
Yeah, I think 1-1. Probably Bruno. probably but I'm going to say it. Both Bruno's are going to score. There you go. Everybody's happy.
00:16:57
Jo
That could be interesting.
00:16:58
Tom Cairns
Yeah.
00:16:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Double Bruno, eh? Bruno squared.
00:17:00
Kieran McGinley - MU
for Thank you very much.
00:17:00
Jo
Yeah.
00:17:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent. So this is going to be interesting because I know Kieran is going to go, and but he's going to leave his computer running so we get everything recorded at the end. And I think that means we're going to have a lifted green screen in the middle of our YouTube channel all the way through, but that's fine.
00:17:15
Jo
the
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you very much indeed, Kieran, for being able to wear to to join in anyway and to do the first part. That's really helpful.
00:17:25
Kieran McGinley - MU
Tom, do us proud.
00:17:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Joe and I can now Want you to go so we can now gang up and bully Tom. We've lulled him into a false sense of security.
00:17:31
Jo
haven't we trapped him now Tom's like I'm gone
00:17:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent.
00:17:35
Kieran McGinley - MU
Enjoy. maybe
00:17:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. Thank you, Kieran. I'm not even going to notice or mention you've gone. Oh, there, he's gone. and Tom, who's going to start for Man United, do you think? Who can't start for Man United?
00:17:50
Tom Cairns
well Well, there's one player that I would most certainly not start at the moment, and that's Garnaccio.
00:17:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Injuries, suspensions.
00:17:56
Tom Cairns
And the reason being is because he makes more of a positive impact when he comes off the bench. Listen to what a fellow Manchester United fan has had to say about Garnaccio's performances and where he's effective and where he's not.
00:18:08
Tom Cairns
It's the right-hand side where he's more effective, whereas on the left-hand side he's just becoming increasingly... selfish and inconsistent, especially when he's getting these shots away and trying to get it on target.
00:18:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:18:18
Tom Cairns
And I think he had like six shots in the game against Forest the other week and all of them were off target. And I think the more times we keep seeing him cut across from the left flank and trying to get a shot away from 20, 25 yards, it just ends up going wide or over the bar by quite some way.
00:18:36
Tom Cairns
So that kind of habit needs to change within Garnaccio if he is going to be starting, but I hope he doesn't. I think Inanna will be in goal, as obvious. I think at least one of the centre-halves that feature against Lyon will end up being rested.
00:18:50
Tom Cairns
Hence why I think it'll be Lindelof, Maguire, and it'll probably end up being delayed, just to strengthen the backline a little bit, just so it's not too weak there.
00:19:01
Tom Cairns
You've got Delo on the right-hand side at wing-back, and Dorgou. at left wing back as well, because we've got no other options. And then I'd like to see Toby Collier get a start, because he's not featured too much for United, but he has been a name mentioned a number of times already.
00:19:18
Tom Cairns
He'll probably be alongside Ugarte, because Casemiro won't get enough minutes under his belt, considering his age and the level of fitness he's in. And we need him for the second leg against Lyon, I think, just for stability.
00:19:29
Tom Cairns
Then the attacking mids. I would want to start Mount... Fernandes and then up front, Chidarobe. I think Chidarobe would be nice to see him get his first start and then just see how he gets on.
00:19:44
Tom Cairns
He probably won't do the whole match, but it's more minutes that we're going to see from him combined compared to what we saw from him in the games against the likes of Tottenham, Everton and Fulham.
00:19:56
Tom Cairns
So that would be what I'd go for.
00:19:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and is because is that because you're frustrated with the product that Hoyland and Xerxes are making, or is it because you want arrest them and start loading some the uses?
00:20:08
Tom Cairns
I kind of... Well, from what i saw from Sirksey in the games in the Europa League, I think he is going to be a valuable asset, certainly more than i think what Hoyland will be.
00:20:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:20:20
Tom Cairns
But Hoyland's been as frustrating as he is. And we I was debating Kieran and others whether it was the lack of service that Hoyland's been getting. But whenever he's got on the ball... there's just no confidence in him at all.
00:20:33
Tom Cairns
And at this stage of the season, we need to have motivation and confidence, upfront and that killer instincts.
00:20:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thanks.
00:20:38
Tom Cairns
And we don't have that right now. So I'm not expecting us to get that much out of it, but if we can just stay in the game for as long as possible, then at least we've got something we can work with, into the second there But as you've rightly mentioned, it really depends on how we get on in the first leg against Leon, in France tomorrow evening.
00:20:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
so and Well, i mean, the Newcastle team will be the same as the Cup final, the same that played against Brentford, the same that played against Leicester. If any is resting players, it tends to be an earlier substitution that will do rather than miss them out altogether.
00:21:12
Jo
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:21:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was slightly alarming that Gordon didn't actually make it onto the bench at Leicester.
00:21:18
Tom Cairns
Okay.
00:21:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that bruise that he got when he was only playing for England might be a little bit more serious than anyone's let on. So I'd like to see Gordon at least be on the bench to to to let us know that that is improving.
00:21:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Willock was off for a concussion, so he'll come back onto the bench. And i like you, I would love to see some of these under-21s that are doing so well at the moment get a chance to come on.
00:21:49
Jo
Niamh,
00:21:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've had this, sure is it Sean Neve, Joanne?
00:21:55
Jo
yeah.
00:21:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who, yeah.
00:21:55
Jo
He's
00:21:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's been on the bench two or three times.
00:22:01
Jo
yet to play though.
00:22:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've never seen him play.
00:22:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've never seen him play. So, yeah, if you're going to put him on the bench, Eddie, let's have a look at those guys. I want to pause there. Joanne, can you do us the Zencastle advert? We'll come back, see who Tom is worried about on the Newcastle side, and then we'll do some predictions.
00:22:19
Jo

00:22:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you very much, Joanne. think the Man United attack will revolve around how comfortable Bruno is feeling.
00:22:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he's the danger man. and I'm not really worried about anybody else, although this guy who scored a load of goals that's going to step into centre-forward and replace the blunt blunt attacking force that's Hoyland...
00:23:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
he might be He might be a bit of a maverick little whip. So have you got anybody you're particularly worried read about on the Man U side, Joanne?
00:23:21
Jo
think the obvious one's Bruno, isn't it really? and That's why I joked before, if he could get injured, I'd feel massively confident that we'll just hear the game.
00:23:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:28
Jo
But it's i'm not I don't want to show any disrespect of the rest of the team because, like I say, they are playing better now than when we played them the first time around this season.
00:23:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, think Dorgo was a good buy, definitely.
00:23:37
Jo
Yeah, yeah. As I say, it it's such a tough because I really don't know how you guys are going to line up. As I say, i' I'll go back to what I just said before. It is obviously heavily dependent on how you play tomorrow night.
00:23:48
Jo
Yeah. but yeah But yeah, I think, I mean, I would say I'm worried about Inanna, but I'm not. Like, that got guy's dodgy, man. Like, I don't know what you think about him, Tom, but I don't know. He's he's a strange keeper because he can pull off some great saves or he can just be absolutely tragic. I just, I'm not quite sure what what he is, if you know what i mean. But yeah, I'd say the main concern and the obvious concern is obviously Bruno.
00:24:14
Tom Cairns
In regards to...
00:24:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:24:16
Tom Cairns
Sorry, go on.
00:24:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I was just going to say, continue if you're following on there, continue, please. I'm just going ask you who you're worried about at Newcastle.
00:24:24
Tom Cairns
Well, I am worried about Newcastle, but so but it's mainly down to how we set up on the attacking front.
00:24:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know if it's one.
00:24:32
Tom Cairns
And I think it's important that we keep Newcastle honest, really, just to show that we still mean business, even though we're not in the best of form in regards to and consistency up front.
00:24:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:24:43
Tom Cairns
But, Anson, you think about Inanna, Joe, I think he is an unpredictable goalkeeper. He's not a David De Gea or an Edwin van der Sar or a Peter Schmeichel. We all know that.
00:24:52
Tom Cairns
But we know he is someone that can do bits for us.
00:24:52
Jo
Yeah.
00:24:53
Jo
Yeah.
00:24:55
Tom Cairns
And he has pulled off some really good saves.
00:24:57
Tom Cairns
It is partly down to how we defend when we do concede. But I think it's easy enough to point the blame at the goalkeeper when they do concede.
00:24:58
Jo
yeah
00:25:08
Tom Cairns
But how Man United as a whole, as a squad, as a team, respond to the misfortunes.
00:25:08
Jo
yeah
00:25:15
Tom Cairns
And whenever we go behind or whenever we do concede at such a really critical time, we just fold and we don't respond. to
00:25:25
Jo
Yeah.
00:25:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think what you've got to not do again, the and because you would just we destroyed you in that first half at Old Trafford, and that was because Casemiro and Ericsson were in midfield.
00:25:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
You definitely need some energy in in midfield to counter our Brunali-ton threesome. I've been quite impressed with Ugarte, actually.
00:25:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he does a very good job for you, and that would definitely... that will definitely take more for our lads to get on top of than either Casemiro Ericsson did. and
00:26:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, so you think it's obvious, isn't it? Isaac is out score. Wilson looks sharp now when he comes on as substitute. Barnes has got another goal and now playing and starting.
00:26:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know we're we're dangerous. We are dangerous. i'm not going to ask you to try and pick any individual one out. Because we'll get wrong. It'll be Jacob Murphy who scores first again. and
00:26:28
Jo
I hope so.
00:26:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:26:29
Jo
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:26:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
What's your prediction for the score, Tom?
00:26:34
Tom Cairns
I would expect Newcastle to win this one. And I think it'll be a 2-0 win. It won't be a romp, like a 3-0 or a 4-0. I was surprised that they didn't score more in the game at Old Trafford in December when you played us.
00:26:47
Tom Cairns
Because that first half an hour, we were just all over the place. And the likes of Eriksen, Casemiro, and even Xerxes, because if if you remember, Xerxes was subbed off after the second goal we conceded.
00:26:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I hope
00:26:58
Tom Cairns
And it was demoralising on him.
00:27:01
Jo
it was
00:27:01
Tom Cairns
But I don't don't expect the same to happen at Newcastle. I think United will make more of a game of it, but I still think Newcastle will have far too much on them. And United will just play the safe game and just make sure that we don't get any suspensions or injuries from that. So I would expect, say, rather comfortable Newcastle win, 2-0.
00:27:16
Tom Cairns
so you know
00:27:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
hope you're right, Tom. What do you think, Joe?
00:27:21
Jo
Tom's more positive than me. I mean, I'm going for a win, as I always do, because I can never not predict a win with Newcastle.
00:27:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
i said
00:27:27
Jo
but So I massively respect you there, Tom, for doing that, I'll be honest. I'm going to go 2-1 again. i think I think it'll be a tight game. I do think we can take it, but do think you guys will get a goal. Whether it's Bruno or not, like Kieran said, I don't know.
00:27:39
Jo
But yeah, just I just don't think... You're right, I do not think it's going romp at all. I expect a win, but expect a very narrow win.
00:27:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to go slightly yeah slightly clearer than that, chair as I do for every game, Tom.
00:27:53
Jo
Are you?
00:27:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know if you know, every one of my Newcastle United predictions is for Newcastle to win 3-1, which I'm going for this time as well. And that's because it keeps coming in.
00:28:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
They keep winning 3-1. But I do think that that's a sensible choice for this game, for the reasons you mentioned. but I just think that if they've played on the Thursday and they know they've got another match and it's close, they'll hold something back for it.
00:28:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whether that's squad members that come off too early or don't get start or the players themselves, this is 95%. They're not going into 50-50 tackles to get injured before the second leg.
00:28:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we'll, Joe Linton, Tonali and Bruno will win the midfield battle. And then when they do that, we've got Barnes and Murphy and Izak up front to to pick their way through.
00:28:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, 3-1 for me.
00:28:50
Jo
Cool.
00:28:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think I might be right. I don't know. Anyway, look, this is sam this is working out to finish dead on 30 minutes if I waffle for another half a minute. I'm not going to waffle. I'm going to say thank you very much indeed for having the stamina to last the full 90 minutes, Tom.
00:29:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kieran went off at half time, but never mind. Thank you very much indeed. Hope it's a good game. You're not coming up for are you? are you?
00:29:15
Tom Cairns
No, I won't be going to the game on the on Sunday. I've got commentary duties for doing, involving another sport, but will try and we still watch the game on Sunday anyway.
00:29:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Joanne will be there. This is the one game I haven't been able to get Joanne to get me tickets for, unfortunately.
00:29:31
Jo
I know. I do apologize again.
00:29:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
What can you do? But we're at the next ones. The show is still, Man United, still the most popular draw that we have and because I've had tickets for all of the other home games.
00:29:39
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:29:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you very much indeed for joining us, Tom. Thank you very much indeed for your input, Joanne. What a pleasure as always. Thanks very much, everyone, for listening. It's only Wednesday day when we're recording it, so it does seem a long way till Sunday afternoon.
00:29:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But time ticks, doesn't it? And it'll be here soon enough. So we shall see you all tomorrow with another pod.
00:30:01
Jo
was indeed
