Introduction and Weekend Recap

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Newcastle podcast and it is episode 148 of our first and certainly not our last season.
00:00:19
Iain
Just
00:00:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
My name is Michael Grahameslow and today i am joined by Kevin Esther and Ian McKay.
00:00:23
Iain
a little bit.
00:00:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ian, I'll start with you. How's going, friend? Hello.
00:00:29
Iain
It's gone very well. I've had a lovely weekend. Thank you very much, Michael. I have ah watched everything on the television from afar. I couldn't go yesterday to see the Cup. I was watching John Cooper Clark in Manchester instead. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.
00:00:43
Iain
But I've watched hours of people climbing up traffic lights and standing on large buildings, waving flags today, and enjoyed.
00:00:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:00:53
Iain
It looked like it was fantastic. to anyone done a final count yet? There must have been 200,000 or 300,000 there.
00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. To be honest, it's a good enough reason to miss it, in my opinion. One person that didn't miss it is Kev.
00:01:05
Iain
Amen.
00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Have you recovered from the

Newcastle Parade Excitement

00:01:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
parade yet, Kev?
00:01:08
Kev
Ah, what an unbelievable time to be a Newcastle fan this is, man. What an event. They literally put on Glastonbury in about 10 days' notice. It's an insane achievement from the club and the council and everybody involved.
00:01:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:01:20
Kev
But yeah, absolutely loved it. It was amazing. And that and personally, Eddie Howe's banner of the Sandman Hotel.
00:01:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:01:28
Kev
Eddie Howe's number one fan. When I saw that, I was like, yep, we've done it right. I'm happy now, no matter what happens. And I don't think we can ever complain about anything again. We've won a cup and we're massive now. So yeah.
00:01:37
Iain
Thank you.
00:01:37
Kev
I'm on cloud nine still.
00:01:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely massive. And to be honest, what scared me with that was seeing the the two lads abseiling with the flares.
00:01:46
Kev
Oh, the commitment.
00:01:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was sitting there going, oh, this whole trophy parade could go wrong with just one bit snapping.
00:01:52
Kev
Hmm.
00:01:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just be typical Newcastle for something like that to happen. But thankfully, thankfully... Everything went off without a hitch and it was 100% one of the greatest days I've ever had as a football fan.
00:02:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Truly excellent stuff but as Eddie has said at the end of the parade, there's still 10 games left to play and that starts on Wednesday. So unfortunately the time for parades, fun and games is over and it's time to get back to work.
00:02:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, most of us were back to work the Monday after the World Cup final. But for those of you that have had a two-week party, yeah, sorry about that, Kev.
00:02:26
Iain
you.
00:02:29
Kev
Yep. yep
00:02:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're going to start fresh and we're going to get into, after a nice international break, Newcastle United versus Brentford on Wednesday

Post-Cup Confidence and Brentford Match Preview

00:02:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
evening. and The teams are currently tied at one win apiece against each other this season.
00:02:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Kev, how are you feeling going the game? Is there a a newfound confidence around the lads?
00:02:46
Iain
Thank you.
00:02:48
Kev
Yeah, I think the whole cup win, and to be honest, it's the best international break to ever exist, one which has just been, hasn't it? Because we had two weeks to stew on an unbelievable cup win.
00:02:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely.
00:02:58
Kev
um But yeah, I actually think this will be a huge help. Sometimes teams win cups mid-season and and just fall away because we've got nothing else, but... I don't think Eddie Howell will let that would happen and I think this will be a huge boost, a huge kick on.
00:03:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. 100%.
00:03:09
Kev
And I just think the scenes and in the city at a weekend will be a massive help to all those players as well.
00:03:10
Iain
from
00:03:15
Kev
Knowing what it means to the club.
00:03:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
and so
00:03:17
Kev
m I think they probably knew what it meant beforehand, but I mean, you watch any of them scenes, them players now have got to give...
00:03:22
Iain
Thank you.
00:03:23
Kev
140% because previously were only given 100. How dare they? and So, yeah, I think it's going to be a massive boost for us and a big kick-on. I think we're full of confidence. and But Brentford are a very good away side out of nowhere, aren't they?
00:03:35
Kev
When we last played, they were unbeatable at home and we couldn't buy a win away.
00:03:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:39
Kev
And it's flipped. Now we're an unbelievable away team. So, definitely, there's a right to be cautious, I think, because we are in unbelievable away form. But, I mean, come on. On the back of the scenes at the weekend, our last game being Liverpool, Dan Burns in England at National now.
00:03:53
Kev
and I think we're going to be a newfound belief, which is amazing when you think about it, a newfound belief in a team which you already thought could beat anybody beforehand. So yeah, I'm mega confident going into Wednesday and night and it's under the lights. It's always a better atmosphere under the lights.
00:04:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. 100%. And what about you, Ian? Are you confident in Newcastle picking up three points? Or do you think that there might actually be a potential hangover after this two week party?
00:04:18
Iain
There's always a potential, isn't there, with Newcastle. However, I'm encouraged by every little interview saw Eddie give during the celebrations yesterday. he would always finish by reminding everybody, and he did it from the big stage in the town war as well, that we're back on it now. There's 10 more games to go.
00:04:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:37
Iain
He's right.
00:04:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:39
Iain
i have said spent a bit of the last two weeks looking at who everybody else has got to play in their last nine games. I think we've got a fantastic chance of finishing in the top five. and And I think it's got to start at home against Brentford.
00:04:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:04:52
Iain
We've done it once, brushed them aside in the Carabao Cup. But I just think the high of of bringing the cup home, of taking on Liverpool and beating them, I just think confidence they've got and then the feeling that they've got.
00:05:10
Iain
the overseas trips that they've had and worked together with. I just think we've got to be on it under the light somewhere.
00:05:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah you can
00:05:18
Iain
The sheer goal will get three points.
00:05:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you would hope so. And I think what we're probably going to see on Wednesday, I think it's probably a good indicator from what we'll see from Newcastle from the rest of the season. Kev, you mentioned just a little bit earlier, sometimes teams win the Carabao Cup mid-season and then they just completely fall off. It's like they've been on in a party mode for three or four months and they don't care about the rest of the season.
00:05:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Newcastle, as you said,
00:05:41
Iain
Thank you.
00:05:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
We shouldn't really expect that. Not we really with the professionalism that Eddie Howe ensues in every little thing that he does. And I think if where if we play well, I think that's a great sign that we will do so for the next 10 games.
00:05:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think if Brent Federer are on top and we struggle, we might not capitalize on the cup win and that momentum as much as what some may have wanted.
00:06:03
Kev
Thank you.
00:06:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if you look at the the form table, We have lost three out of our last five home games in 2025. That will need to change midweek.
00:06:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ian, you mentioned, Kevin, I think you as well. The fans are going to play a huge part and the atmosphere simply has to be above the average it's been this season because anything less could see a struggle.
00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it will just because of the cup win and the buoyancy behind ah the team right now. But what I actually want to ask is it has been three weeks and a cup win since our last Premier League game.
00:06:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So is it a case of after everything that's happened, the form book kind of just goes out the window at this point? What do you think, Ian?
00:06:46
Iain
Well, I think we've ah think we've had an opportunity to elevate our form with the break, with the extra confidence, with the bulk of the squad.
00:06:58
Iain
I know we've had a few players away on international duty, but the bulk of the squad has been crossing the Middle East, doing their warm weather training and bonding a little bit more.
00:07:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:09
Iain
um I just think that when they've done that before, they've always come back and hit the ground running. ah but there's a real prize to get.
00:07:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:16
Iain
It's the real prize to get. They know they've won the League Cup and they probably all want to play in the Champions League. The guys who want to play in the Champions League will want to play in the Champions League with Newcastle next season.
00:07:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. 100%.
00:07:28
Iain
Fantastic motivation.
00:07:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
hundred perspective
00:07:30
Iain
Our games, this is a tough game at home against Brentford, but we have a little run of very winnable games throughout the rest of April.
00:07:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:37
Iain
And the really tough matches, I think, come in the last four or five games. So if we can win...
00:07:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:07:44
Iain
four out of these five games in April and and be solidly in the top four, I think that'll give us the momentum to to be able to pick some really good wins up against the Chelsea and Arsenal and Brighton that we've got left to play in the last four games.
00:08:01
Iain
So yeah, um ah I think got to look at the 10 games coming up altogether. It was 11, of course.
00:08:06
Kev
Thank you.
00:08:07
Iain
Don't forget, we had a really tough game away at West Ham that could easily have been a banana skinned
00:08:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, absolutely.
00:08:14
Iain
which they ground out a very, very good 1-0 win in. And I think that attitude is is what we'll come back with. That'll get us there.
00:08:24
Kev
Yeah, I was going to come to that. I was going to come to our last Premier League game. It was actually an unbelievable kind of gritty away performance with one eye on the final as well. um So I was really, really happy with that performance.
00:08:35
Kev
But the other thing I wanted to mention is I think Eddie's probably already had that chat with the players about going for top four. And as good as the cup win is, it's now in the past.
00:08:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
100%. Mm-hmm.
00:08:44
Kev
um Mainly because it was I didn't notice any, I might be wrong here, and I didn't notice any alcohol on the bus at all. There was no champagne. There was no beers, there was no cans, there was nothing.
00:08:55
Kev
The players didn't seem like anything. So that seemed like something, anyhow, probably put in place to say, look, season's nowhere near over. Make the most of this night, it'll be amazing. But you're not getting drunk, you're not drinking. We've got a big game Wednesday night. So I loved that little detail, which I noticed. and I didn't notice it at the time at the Town River. I could have swore if Rimento looked half cut and Bruno...
00:09:15
Kev
Bruno just seemed like he having the best time his life.
00:09:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sounded it. Yeah.
00:09:17
Kev
But when I watched it back when I got home, and I did notice normally when you watch a bus parade, they're pouring champagne on each other or necking it and there was none of that.
00:09:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:25
Kev
There was actually no alcohol at all.
00:09:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:09:28
Kev
So I'm assuming it's come from Eddie Howe and I'm assuming he's had that meeting about, look, it's now in the past, it's brilliant and well done, you deserve this night and this atmosphere and this moment.
00:09:28
Iain
and High on life, Kev. They're high on life.
00:09:41
Kev
However, we're not drinking because... In three days' time, we have a massive game. So, I think he's probably already had that conversation with them by the looks of it.

Impact of Cup Win on Team Morale

00:09:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's a very astute observation. And to be honest, it's not something and i notice so ah brilliant that brilliant bring it up. It's one of those where I think you look at Newcastle United now and it we are very different from the Newcastle United of the past. And we mentioned in the build-up to the cup final you know Newcastle don't tend to do very well in this stage.
00:10:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'd won two games out of... god I can't remember how many. And then we doubled that. And then we beat that just this season alone. And what we're seeing from Eddie Howe is something that we've not really seen from Newcastle United managers, particularly in my lifetime.
00:10:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's one of those where I genuinely think going into Wednesday... I don't think there's any way that we don't take that momentum into the Premier League game. And as you said, Ian, we've got a ah decent run of fixtures in April.
00:10:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if you can take that sort of momentum into those games, I think Leicester is up next, um away from home. And realistically, you could have... top four, i'm not going to so I'm probably going to sound quite cocky, but you could have top four, or top five even, almost cemented by May, and that would put it down as arguably Newcastle's greatest season since the 50s.
00:11:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, before we get ahead of ourselves, we are going to go into our first advert of the podcast, from Bionique.
00:11:51
Iain
Thank you.
00:11:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And what is right for me is Newcastle United winning a cup and being in a tremendous run of form. Now we've got part one, part two comes soon as Wednesday night sees the Magpies play their first game following the cup final.
00:12:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
But regards to team news... There isn't too much in regards to major issues for Newcastle United. Lewis Hall, Jamal LaSalle and Sven Bottman all still injured. um The only worry comes in the form of Anthony Gordon, ah who obviously did go off injured for England in the international break, but he's already suspended for this game, so it doesn't change a thing.
00:12:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, Kev, you noticed no alcohol on the bus. I also didn't see Gordon moving too gingerly at all. He seemed okay. But I might have missed something.
00:12:38
Iain
you
00:12:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was was very intoxicated.
00:12:39
Kev
Hmm.
00:12:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
So there might have been a protective boot on for all that I do. ah But I would say, a lesson forced, Kev, I can't see too many changes from the line-up that played the cup final.
00:12:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think?
00:12:52
Kev
Yeah, I think it's probably got to be the same team to start. um Yeah, Gordon seemed absolutely fine. He didn't it didn't seem like he was he was struggling all.
00:12:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:02
Kev
So I'm hoping it wasn't too bad. And he wasn't asked about it that much. um
00:13:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:13:06
Kev
When I watched the BBC coverage, the ITV, the Sky Sports stuff, and obviously Anton Deck did the NUFC TV coverage, I haven't seen him asked about it. So I'm assuming...
00:13:15
Iain
Thank you.
00:13:16
Kev
he's fine.
00:13:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's fine.
00:13:16
Kev
Otherwise, it would be a big, like, are you okay? Yeah, I'm not even an injured type thing. So, yeah, I think it'll be the same team.
00:13:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:22
Kev
um I do think, just going back to what we said back in the part one about the fixtures, we've got some huge games. We've still got Villa, Brighton, Chelsea to play, who are all fighting with us for, obviously, them top five spaces.
00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:13:35
Kev
um Brighton maybe less so than Villa and Newcastle by the time air fixtures come round but Villa, Brighton and Chelsea still to play um and then we've got Arsenal after that so I hope it's wrapped up by the 18th of May because that's always a tough game um but it's it's going to be I think the most important thing and you've mentioned it in the part one, is the next two games.
00:13:55
Kev
I think winning the Brentford at home, winning at Leicester away, them six points could be huge based on how other teams do.
00:13:58
Iain
Thank you.
00:14:00
Kev
and
00:14:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:01
Kev
FA Cup games in between that as well, the semi-finals coming up. So Villa have a semi-final to look forward to. um That could be, hopefully, very distracting. Unfortunately, Brighton, the nicest team in the world, went out, ah um which i'll I'll let Ian talk about more because know he's a big fan of Brighton.
00:14:17
Kev
But, i yeah, it's it's going to be an interesting run-in. and But, yeah, I think with the team users, it's got to be unchanged, hasn't it?
00:14:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think so, 100%. And you mentioned there, um not um ah you know, the ah the FA Cup, Nottingham Forest also in there, Manchester City in there.
00:14:32
Kev
Yeah, good point.
00:14:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, you know, three out of our, let's say, well, it feels like 10 rivals for European positions at this point, but three of the biggest rivals we have, all three of them have got that FA Cup semi-final, the look over their shoulder.
00:14:41
Kev
and
00:14:46
Kev
And we're playing the other two of them with Chelsea and who's your team? Brighton.
00:14:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And Chelsea aren't in a great run of form, but
00:14:56
Iain
Chelsea have the Conference League.
00:15:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
conference league.
00:15:02
Kev
Yeah, good point, yeah.
00:15:02
Iain
They're expected to win. Villa is still playing in the Champions League as well. They've all got distractions.
00:15:08
Kev
Hmm.
00:15:09
Iain
ah think I think it's set up. ah do I agree. i mean you know We'll start talking tonight about there being 10 cup finals left and if we do manage a win, there'll be nine cup finals after that and we'll be talking about the next game being the most important game
00:15:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm. Hmm.
00:15:23
Iain
because we need to start building some momentum. This is a great time to duplicate our nine straight wins run that we had over Christmas. Fantastic time to do that again, lads.
00:15:35
Iain
And to be fair, the games aren't any more difficult than those games were, because we had Arsenal, we had Man U, we had Tottenham away during that run.
00:15:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
No,
00:15:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
no not at all.
00:15:40
Kev
Mm-hmm.
00:15:44
Iain
So, you know, it's all it's all possible.
00:15:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:47
Iain
It's exciting. It's exciting.
00:15:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. It's exciting times ahead. and ah Ian, do you agree with Kev that you think we'll probably be unchanged from the Cup Final?
00:15:53
Iain
yeah
00:15:58
Iain
ah don't yeah I don't see why we would change it. I thought Barnes did really well in the final, actually. He was kind of the hum and ha and is it Barnes or do we put Big Joe on the out on on the wing and Willakin midfield or vice versa?
00:16:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:14
Iain
mean, they played that in the later stages of the Cup final and that went quite well as well. But I think Barnes... You know, he deserves he deserves a run, doesn't he? been waiting to get and a little bit of a run the start with Gordon being out.
00:16:29
Iain
got to be It's got to be him.
00:16:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. Yeah, 100%. No. Yeah.
00:16:31
Iain
and
00:16:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not yet.
00:16:33
Iain
I don't think there's any issue now over who starts in goal. and think but I think pope Pope is a legend, isn't he?
00:16:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:16:39
Iain
Cup-winning goalkeeper.
00:16:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:16:41
Iain
um And, you know, whereas Lewis Hall would have been a huge miss had Tito not looked so good at left-back and Kieran Trippier... rolling back the years to rediscover his best form for us.
00:16:54
Kev
Player of the season, Kieran Trippier.
00:16:54
Iain
and not just Not just in the final, but away at West Ham as well.
00:16:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
not yet
00:17:00
Iain
So let's have a few more games like that from him. um And, you know, its once we're through this Brentford game, Gordon comes back.
00:17:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
100%. Yeah. Yeah, 100%.
00:17:10
Iain
um I don't know how far away La Salle's is, but I know they're expecting Bachman to be ready before the end of the season as well. So we could... We could end up strengthening a little bit more as the games get a bit tougher, which is which are all good.

Harvey Barnes' Role at Newcastle

00:17:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah To be honest, I wanted to speak a little bit as well about Harvey Barnes, obviously we mentioned him there. um But if he's fighting for his NUFC future right now, realistically. But that week of the Cup final, I thought he was excellent. West Ham, I thought he was one of our best players, certainly our most creative.
00:17:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
It wasn't a great game for anybody, really, except the the defenders. So creative from a creative perspective, Harvey Barnes looked fantastic. and i I was unsure of going into into Liverpool. I was thinking, oh, you know what?
00:17:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
he's he's gonna He's going to disappear.
00:17:55
Iain
Thank
00:17:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's done it a couple of times. It's a big game. It'll happen. But he was fantastic. And we said not all that long ago that Harvey Barnes would probably be the first name that we would sell if we had to for PSR reasons.
00:18:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think the... I know this is a bit of a negative, unfortunately, but are we still thinking that way, or do we think that Barnes has more to offer to Newcastle now? What do you think, Kev?
00:18:25
Kev
I must be Harvey Barnes' biggest critic. I think he was all okay against West Ham.
00:18:29
Iain
Thank you.
00:18:29
Kev
He got the assist, obviously, but it did come back off a rebounded field cross or shot. And the final, I thought he was okay. I thought he was a solid 6-7, but he didn't really get us off my seat. I don't know if I've just got unfair expectations of him.
00:18:43
Kev
And I'm not going to come on here and criticise any of the players after the Cup win, but I feel like if he scores, he has a good game. And if he doesn't score, he's average.
00:18:54
Kev
He's 6-7 out of 10, which is okay. It's solid. am But yeah, if I feel like he needs to get a little bit more to his game and goals. He's a great finisher. I honestly think behind maybe Isaac in a fully fit Wilson, he's probably our next best finisher one-on-one.
00:19:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd agree.
00:19:09
Kev
If you've got to pick for somebody to be in one-on-one, I'd have Isaac, fully fit Wilson, Ben Barnes third. So he's definitely got a lot of ability. and But for me as a winger, I feel like you've got to have a little bit of something to go past somebody or just even if you've just got one trick, which gets you a yard when you're that good at shooting and and that gets his...
00:19:26
Kev
He's whipped shot in. I don't know. i've I really want him to succeed. I do. I want him to score against Brentford. I want him to keep his place and score against Leicester. And I kind of want him to keep Gordon out the team because that would be so healthy for these last 10 games.
00:19:36
Iain
Thank you.
00:19:40
Kev
I want him to do well. I'm willing him to do well. and i just think so far, I've been i've been a tad... Actually, I'll be honest, I've been being quite disappointed by his move so far. When he has got up with some momentum, he's then got injured again, which isn't his fault.
00:19:56
Kev
um
00:19:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:56
Kev
But yeah, I just want him to have a little bit more to his game and than just being a great finisher. um Whether he's got that or not remains to be seen. I hope I'm on a pod when we're reviewing this season and I'm saying, wow, what a final 10 weeks Harvey Barnes had.
00:20:10
Kev
He can go past people.
00:20:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:20:12
Kev
He can whip the ball in. He can score goals still. and He's versatile. Hopefully he gets put on the I hope I'm saying that at the end of a season. But right now, I would only be saying he's a very good finisher.
00:20:23
Kev
But the rest leaves a lot to be desired for me.
00:20:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and what are you thinking? Do you think Barnes is still probably one of the names for PSR, or do you think maybe he's got a little bit more to give?
00:20:36
Iain
I think, well I don't think it's, I don't think he's on a list anywhere yet, just yet. I think he's got to do a lot, I think he's got to do a lot to shift himself from that because A,
00:20:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:20:46
Iain
He would produce a lot of cash in comparison to the other players that we think are replaceable within the squad. And he is in a position where we have some really good cover.
00:20:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%.
00:21:00
Iain
Anthony Gordon is first choice on left wing.
00:21:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:03
Iain
And we've got Joey or Joe Willock who can play there as well. Then, you know, he is replaceable. He's not somebody who we're going to leave a hole in the team for.
00:21:14
Iain
not like selling Murphy and then scratching your head over who you're going to get to play down the right wing. um
00:21:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:20
Iain
so But i don't I don't think that we've got that issue. I don't think it's a PSR issue. and This might be a summer where we've already bit the bullet and we've got some cash to spend.
00:21:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:21:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
possible presence.
00:21:33
Iain
There'll be a natural, I'm sure, a natural desire for players who aren't playing to want to move on to get first team football. There'll be some who
00:21:42
Iain
whose contract's finished that we don't renew. but don't know if we're going to have to sell anyone to make any space in the team to to improve the squad. and So maybe Harvey Barnes will get another season next year to to try and cement a position somewhere in the in the Newcastle team.
00:21:59
Iain
He could play down the middle, you know. He's fast, he's skilful, and he can go both ways.
00:22:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
but Yeah, 100%.
00:22:03
Kev
ah I've said on him before he could play as a striker but I just
00:22:07
Iain
You're right, but West Ham in the first half, it was him who had the two shots on target. And I think he he he did the assist, did he not, for the goal as well. So however unflashy he was in that game, he was bloody effective in comparison to the rest of our work forward players.
00:22:16
Kev
did
00:22:23
Iain
So, um yeah, I think he's got a long way to go to knock Anthony Gordon for his perch, hasn't he? But Anthony Gordon needs somebody snapping at his heels to keep him at that high level, I think.
00:22:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:22:35
Iain
So he's doing it I think Harvey Barnes is doing okay.
00:22:39
Kev
I think unless Barnes wants to leave, his future's probably safe because I think it's three years since Isaac Bruno were signed.
00:22:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:22:46
Kev
So if it's rolling three years and for the whole FFP humour, it's not fair anymore and it's now changed its name to pretty much admit that it's not fair. So,
00:22:56
Iain
Thank you.
00:22:56
Kev
If it's rolling for years, then Bruno's transfer fees come off the books, so has his axe. So you're starting to look at, well, is that money free again? Can we start going to spend big? and So I think that'll help Barnes the future.
00:23:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great point.
00:23:09
Kev
I think if had only been two years since we signed them players, then they might be thinking, right, let's try and get 30 million from 35 million, something like that. um and And that'll help us. But I think it would have been three years and them two big signings, big money signings, I mean, 63 million for Izak's coming off the books.
00:23:26
Kev
And I think it was 30, what was it for Bruno?
00:23:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:28
Kev
36, 35 million or something come coming off the books again.
00:23:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
35, I think. Yeah.
00:23:32
Kev
So, I mean, that's almost 100 million coming off that rolling three-year period. So, I think that'll save Barnes. and over anything but he seems like the type of player where if he's not playing he's going to want to leave anyway so I think this is his opportunity now to get himself in the team to rival Gordon or make himself useful on the right and to try and to try and displace Murphy
00:23:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. I saw that.
00:23:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I think it's a great point. And one thing I wanted to end with, ah pot well, part two with, should I say. um we go to the We go into this game with Champions League qualification in our hands.
00:24:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ten games left. Two behind Chelsea, one behind Man City. Game and hand on both. But if the current rate of points continues, Newcastle will need 63 points to guarantee top four, 62 to get top five with coefficient, etc.
00:24:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that is... Five wins and a draw from the final 10 games. Now, I want to put you both on the spot. Are we on track for Barcelona or will we have to settle for Lazio or Roma?
00:24:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do we get Champions League? What do you think, Ian?

Champions League Qualification Debate

00:24:40
Iain
We've had this pod and I haven't changed my mind.
00:24:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that's why I've started with you and gone to Kev after.
00:24:45
Iain
we went We went through, Joanne, Nicola and myself went through the last 11 games as it was. um i had said 65 points would get us Champions League so we needed seven wins from the 11 games.
00:24:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:24:59
Iain
And we all had Newcastle winning eight of those 11 games.
00:25:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:25:04
Iain
We were all a bit scared. were all a bit scared. of the West Ham match, which of course went very well for us So I'm just a slightly more confident than I was when we did that little review.
00:25:15
Iain
But, um you know, of course, we weren't factoring in the extra confidence winning a cup comes gives you. um So, yeah, i'm I'm really confident on it, you know. Got Arsenal to play, Kev. I know they're a good team, but we'll beat them three times this year.
00:25:31
Iain
When we played Chelsea, we're playing Chelsea at home.
00:25:31
Kev
I think
00:25:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:25:34
Iain
But just remember battling Chelsea the last few times have come to St. James' Park. So, yeah, you know, I'm i'm confident, Michael. Hopefully not over-confident.
00:25:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll see. We will see. Now, Kev, what do you think? Newcastle going to qualify for the Champions League or not?
00:25:52
Kev
ah think we're going to get 18 more points this season.
00:25:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:25:56
Kev
Um... which I think is not a bad return. I think people would expect a little bit more, but I think you've got to be realistic and this Premier League is so, so, so unpredictable. and I think 18 points, I think, what did you say for top five?
00:26:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
tough To be fair, that that finishes with top four.
00:26:10
Iain
two
00:26:12
Kev
yeah Yeah, perfect. So, up up yeah, top four then for me. um But yeah, I think 18 points would be a good return. I just think there will be some banana skins in there. we After all, let's face it, as much as I'm on a massive high, we are Newcastle United, there will be a game we lose and there's a massive overreaction.
00:26:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:29
Kev
um
00:26:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:30
Kev
But also...
00:26:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Leicester 1-0.
00:26:31
Kev
Probably. um But there's also a lot of games where we will blow teams away, maybe my United-Chelsea teams like that. and So I think it's unpredictable. I think we've just got to enjoy it. I think we will finish in the top five. I'm pretty confident of that without trying to sound like the typical arrogant Newcastle fan.
00:26:48
Kev
um
00:26:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:49
Kev
I feel like we will finish in the top five. I think we will be okay. But we will lose some games we're probably expecting to win. and So yeah, 18 points for me.
00:26:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah. Good stuff.
00:26:58
Iain
We're going to lose at Villa. We're going to lose at... What do we have? we had We're going to lose at Villa. We're going to lose at Arsenal. And there was another one. sort of a And Brighton.
00:27:09
Iain
They're the three we're going to lose. We win the rest.
00:27:11
Kev
and have couple of draws in there.
00:27:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're not losing the game.
00:27:12
Iain
That's...
00:27:14
Kev
a couple of drawers in
00:27:15
Iain
That's seven more wins.
00:27:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:17
Iain
Oh, there's nobody to draw with.
00:27:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I get it.
00:27:18
Iain
Come on.
00:27:19
Kev
Palace are a good team. Palace are in great form at the minute.
00:27:21
Iain
I know.
00:27:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they are.
00:27:21
Iain
Palace is a banana. Palace is a banana skin.
00:27:23
Kev
It's just banana skin.
00:27:24
Iain
I know. Brentford is a banana skin.
00:27:26
Kev
Brentford's a banana skin.
00:27:26
Iain
But hey,
00:27:27
Kev
Palace banana skin.
00:27:28
Iain
We're cup winners, Kev. We're cup winners, Kev.
00:27:29
Kev
Yeah, yeah. Everton's in great form as well without taking too much weight from them.
00:27:30
Iain
We'll be playing those teams we played those themes at home under the lights. Come on. You've got fancy yourselves.
00:27:37
Kev
I agree. Oh, definitely fancy us. I've got my sensible hat on for the first time in two weeks.
00:27:43
Iain
oh You've got to get back to when you were telling us at quarter-final stage we're going to win this Carabao Cup.
00:27:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:27:48
Iain
It's written in the stars.
00:27:49
Kev
Yep. And I'm telling you now, we're going to finish.
00:27:50
Iain
That's what you said.
00:27:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
The Messiah.
00:27:51
Kev
<unk> We're going to qualify for Champions League as well, I'm telling you. But we will lose games on the way the last.
00:27:55
Iain
That's right. Oh, yeah.
00:27:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely.
00:27:56
Iain
Well, undoubtedly. Undeadly.
00:27:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
100%. And in regards to our competition, obviously I mentioned 62-63 points. When Man City are involved at the end of the season, and you'd you expect them to win every game at that point. But a big thing for Nottingham Forest side is that yeah Chris Woods picked up an injury for New Zealand um and Nuno Espirito Santo has called that a worst case scenario injury. So their spot maybe isn't as guaranteed as what you maybe would have thought.
00:28:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously Taiwo Wanya is more than capable of filling in the role.
00:28:28
Kev
great player
00:28:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, obviously also missed a penalty when we beat them in the Carabao Cup. So thanks, Tywo.
00:28:33
Kev
makes him even better yeah join between any time you want son mm-hmm
00:28:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
But exactly, can help them qualify anytime, as long as it's not at our expense. But we'll get back to the game on Wednesday, give our thoughts and predictions after our next advert, which is from Zencaster.
00:28:51
Iain
And we're going old school, Michael. We're going old school.
00:28:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, take me back.
00:28:58
Iain
Do you have a story to tell that the world needs to hear? Have you struggled with reaching the audiences who are engaged with your story? it might be time for you to start a podcast.
00:29:05

00:29:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, I've missed that advert.
00:29:41
Kev
That advert's like St. James' Park, isn't it? Ever since we went to a new one, it just hasn't read.
00:29:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
We
00:29:46
Kev
I thought of all the great memories, the Christmas special with you two acting it out, with Tony the Tiger there, great. There's just so many good memories from that advert. Even when we were practising well before we went live, that is the St.
00:29:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
can't leave.
00:29:59
Kev
James' Park of adverts, and that's another reason why we shouldn't leave the stadium, because the new one just doesn't quite fit.
00:30:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
It might be a very good point.
00:30:05
Iain
No, the new one's not as long. The new one's not as long. It doesn't have everything in it, I don't think. But there, you know.
00:30:11
Kev
Great advert, that. Great advert.
00:30:13
Iain
It doesn't hurt to go back and and and look at the old stuff, does it?
00:30:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:30:16
Kev
Mmm.
00:30:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Exactly.
00:30:17
Iain
I bet Michael still plays his first and second Oasis albums, don't yeah
00:30:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
On repeat, it's my Spotify.
00:30:24
Iain
you?
00:30:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
In fact, no, I would say Spotify.
00:30:26
Iain
ah
00:30:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a bit too modern. But speaking of St. James' Park, Brentford go there on Wednesday.
00:30:33
Kev
getting
00:30:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And they come on the back of three away wins. As we mentioned in part one, they are in great form. And they were impressive wins as well. Being a rejuvenated Crystal Palace, demolishing Leicester City, and then beating Bournemouth.
00:30:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we all know what happened when Bournemouth came to St. James' Park earlier in the season. And for me, they have one of the most exciting attacking lineups in the league this season.
00:30:53
Kev
Thank you.
00:30:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, Ian, I'll start off with you. Where do you think the front three of Brian Mbwemo, Johan Wisser and Kevin Sharder ranks in the Premier League right now? am Not exact number, obviously, but it's got to be high, hasn't it?
00:31:13
Iain
It's got to be high, yes. One thing I will say why they would be so high is they are consistently available this season, aren't they? Nobody's lost but many very many games at all.
00:31:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
hundred Yeah.
00:31:25
Iain
And Buemo and Wisse, they're almost
00:31:28
Iain
nailed on for one of them to score and the other to assist during every every game they play. um I'll put them in the top five of front threes. just because there's three really good guys.
00:31:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's go for it.
00:31:39
Iain
The one that the one that that i I don't know loads about, because he's fairly new, is Sharder. But the bits I have seen him, he's is really fast.
00:31:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:46
Kev
got a Great name.
00:31:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:31:48
Iain
He's really fast. Kevin Sharder.
00:31:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:52
Kev
Great name.
00:31:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:54
Iain
Yeah. So, yeah. But they did nothing when they played St. James' Park at the Carabao Cup, because we were just we just had the ball. they They didn't get any service. We choked it off them.
00:32:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:32:04
Iain
and And that spirit of... Carabao Cup Final will do the same thing again on Wednesday I'm sure.
00:32:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:32:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
I remember, I don't think Mbwemo started the game, Wissa might have, and but I remember and in an added time, ah seeing them through on goal with Mbwemo knocking it across to Wissa.
00:32:16
Iain
so
00:32:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully we don't see that again, but Kev, Mbwemo, Wissa, big Kev. think of course most teams in the league problems, no?
00:32:36
Kev
Yeah, I agree. I think they're probably top five, I think, in terms of front threes. We're going into massive detail. I think Liverpool, City, Newcastle, Bournemouth are maybe the best four front threes in the league when everyone's fully fit.
00:32:42
Iain
Thank you.
00:32:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:32:49
Kev
And I can't believe Jacob Murphy is part of one of the best front threes. But output-wise, in terms of assists and goals the season...
00:32:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course is.
00:32:55
Kev
You kind have to include him. But yeah, Brentford, Embuemo and Wisa, isn't it?
00:32:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:33:00
Kev
I mean, I do like Shardou. He looks promising, but he's very hit and miss. Embuemo just, his numbers for the last two seasons have been amazing. And I'm really, um I'm more impressed by Wisa. I think Embuemo's got that reputation now where everyone's kind of after him and looking at him and we expect stuff from him.
00:33:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:33:16
Kev
Great left foot and all that stuff. But with Wisse, he kind of goes under the radar. But every time I watch him, he's just so intelligent. His movement, he's good with his back towards goal. But he's a very good finisher as well.
00:33:27
Kev
He's he's more than capable when he's one-on-one. So for me, i think Wisse is the one we need to be very careful of.
00:33:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:33:34
Kev
Obviously, Mbwemo's the more obvious one. I think when the players see that Mbwemo gets the ball, it'll be a natural double up. Let's help out everybody. Wisse can kind of go under the radar and that can be very dangerous for us. So I'm hoping, well actually I'm not hoping, I know Eddie will have a plan um and he would have already looked at this probably for the last two weeks which again gives me great confidence going into this and a lot of time to prepare.
00:33:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:33:57
Kev
um So I think there'll be something there. What it is, I wouldn't even like to guess with Eddie at the minute, the way he's done a number on slot in the cup final, did a number on Arteta in the semi-final.
00:34:08
Kev
um
00:34:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:34:09
Kev
So, yeah, i'm I'm thinking he's definitely got a plan to to sort him out. And let's face it, our defence looked fantastic against Liverpool in the last game. I know it's different because the cup final, but Shaw looked like we were Shaw of old.
00:34:20
Kev
and We had a couple of ropey games leading up to the final.
00:34:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
go
00:34:23
Kev
And Dan Byrne, I mean, that guy... where's he come from? Because when he first signed, none of us thought that was going to happen.
00:34:27
Iain
Thank you.
00:34:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Live.
00:34:29
Kev
He comes from Bly and you might never, ever beat him. But don't think anybody expected to turn into this play.
00:34:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:34:36
Kev
And again, it's it's credit to Byrne for putting in the work and it's a massive credit to how his coach and staff and Eddie himself for getting the legs around him.
00:34:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely not.
00:34:44
Kev
like Obviously, I know he's injured now, but Hall and Tino, um I think they've played a big part in Byrne's success recently as well.
00:34:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:34:51
Kev
So, yeah, I'm... Very good front three, but I don't they're going to get the ball much.
00:34:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'd agree.
00:34:59
Kev
I think our midfield wins the game, doesn't think our midfield kills their midfield and almost stops them getting a lot of service. So at least that's what I'm hoping.
00:35:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we'll have to shut up shop with Miguel Damsgaard, 10 assists. I'm pretty sure all of them have been to those three players.
00:35:12
Kev
Yeah.
00:35:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not going to lie.
00:35:14
Kev
Sure, they'll sort him out.
00:35:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. um They've got a very good team and, you know, that attack in front of three, all three of them scored in the reverse fixture and when Brentford put four pass to it. But many forget that was the game that turned around Newcastle's season.
00:35:28
Kev
I
00:35:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
We were one point above Manchester United at that point. And, well, just look at us now.
00:35:35
Kev
said it was a witness call.
00:35:35
Iain
Thank you.
00:35:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
But... Yeah, I want to move to our predictions and Kev, I will start with you. Ian, i'll go to you second and then I'll round things off as we sail into the sunset and enjoy the last 10 games of and a whole historic season.

Brentford Match Predictions

00:35:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Kev, give us your thoughts and predictions for Newcastle United versus Brentford on Wednesday evening.
00:35:58
Kev
Brentford are in great away form, but it's Wednesday night under the lights. It's St James' Park, first time after winning a Cup, so I'm going to go 2-1 win in Newcastle. Good game, I think it'll be a good good attack in close game, but I think we'll come out on the right side of it.
00:36:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
absolutely fantastic and Ian what do you think what's your prediction for Newcastle versus Brentford
00:36:19
Iain
Why, Michael, why do you think I would ever change 3-1 as a prediction from a home game? Look, we've played Brentford once at home this season already.
00:36:29
Iain
We beat them 3-1.
00:36:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
we did
00:36:31
Iain
I agree with Kev. That forward line is pretty tasty. I can't see us keeping a clean sheet against them. But I think ah think we'll create a lot of chances.
00:36:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:36:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:36:42
Iain
and Barnes likes playing against Brentford. It's a match that he started when we lost 4-2.
00:36:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:36:48
Iain
If you remember...
00:36:48
Kev
And he'll want to make sure he starts against Leicester as well.
00:36:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:36:49
Iain
We gave two stupid goals away in that first half at Brentford. We should have been two up.
00:36:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:36:56
Iain
And then we went to pieces in the second half. um So, yeah, I'm expecting Barnes to do something good. So let's say Barnes will get a goal. Isaac scores every time, doesn't he?
00:37:07
Iain
And at danburn ah Dan Byrne?
00:37:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
All this.
00:37:09
Iain
Dan Byrne from a corner, do you think?
00:37:10
Kev
Surely not.
00:37:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Another one.
00:37:11
Iain
In celebration? In celebration? Well, you know, that's 3-1, Michael.
00:37:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:37:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah no surprises there but we love consistency
00:37:22
Iain
in. It keeps coming in. It should have been it that should have been that should have been the score in the cup final.
00:37:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
should have oh
00:37:29
Iain
They kept getting through in the last 10 minutes and then taking it the bloody corner flag instead having a shot.
00:37:29
Kev
Should it be?
00:37:36
Iain
Idiots.
00:37:36
Kev
How dare they secure a win in a final?
00:37:37
Iain
but
00:37:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great stuff. And to be honest, I do agree that it's going to be a high-scoring game. We've seen 10 goals, 4-2 and 3-1, in the two games between the sides this season. So I'll go for another five on average. I'll go with a 3-2 win for Newcastle.
00:37:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think we'll beat our best. I think we'll be a little sluggish early on. Brentford will take the lead. will come back in typical Newcastle fashion and hold on for the win.
00:38:08
Iain
Thank you.
00:38:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah similar to Similar to the Forest game. But at the end of the day, life's pretty peachy as a Newcastle fan right now. And at this stage of the season, all that matters is the three points.
00:38:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it can be a 1-0 where I fall asleep in ah level seven, oh it can be an absolutely beautiful game.
00:38:29
Kev
somebody just mogged Somebody just mark Nathan Collins.
00:38:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But at the end of the day,
00:38:32
Kev
i think he's a great player and I would love him at Newcastle next season. But after that goal he scored against us at their place, Jesus, somebody just mark Nathan Collins, please.
00:38:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:38:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. And speaking of the reverse fixture, if anyone said to you after that game Newcastle would win the Carabao Cup, we'd be one of the favourites to get the Champions League spot.
00:38:45
Iain
um
00:38:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Eh...
00:38:54
Kev
I was very positive. I was too positive.
00:38:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
You were positive about the cup, but Champions League, maybe not.
00:39:00
Kev
Mm-hmm.
00:39:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I don't think anyone would have believed you if you combined the two. And what a rollercoaster of a season we've had. And the ride has just begun.
00:39:09
Iain
new
00:39:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, that's all we have time for, unfortunately. And we will see you next time.
00:39:15
Iain
Yes.
00:39:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
