Introduction and Congratulations to Kevin

00:00:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Newcastle. My name is Ian Mackay and for the very first time I'm flying solo tonight to review the Leicester-Newcastle game that's just finished.
00:00:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I should have had Kev with me, but Kevin is in the hospital. He is bouncing his new baby girl, Bonnie Esther, sorry, Bonnie Macy Esther off his knee.
00:00:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
She must be nearly three hours old now. So massive congratulations from me, Kev and Jen.

First Half Overview: Newcastle Dominates

00:00:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Also from, I'm sure, Michael, Joanne and Nicola.
00:00:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
We are delighted that Bonnie has finally arrived. What that means is I've now got this really awkward podcast to do where I've never...
00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've never just talked on my own. bit dangerous, so go on for about four and a half hours, but I shall try and remain relevant and let's stick to what we need to talk about, which was the game tonight away at Leicester, which Newcastle have won as easily as we predicted that they would last night, 3-0.
00:01:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
three ni It didn't quite start the way we thought it would start, with a Leicester corner after 20 seconds. But I'm jumping the gun. In this first part, I want to just look at the team that came out.
00:01:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we predicted that Eddie would go with the same 11 again, and that's exactly what he did. But in doing that, he confirmed that Kieran Trippier was OK. Alexander Izak was OK.
00:01:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Joe Linton was OK. So all of those knocks were just knocks that not but they could run off. Anthony Gordon had finished his suspension, but wasn't in the team.
00:01:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Didn't even make the bench, so fingers crossed. That's not a continuing issue, but just just just giving him an extra extra few days rest before the big match against Man U next Sunday.
00:02:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yes, the game started and Leicester had a corner after 20 seconds, which is a real shock. This is a Leicester side who have lost each of their last seven home games without scoring. They haven't scored at home since December the 8th and just typical we were expecting that Newcastle would be the team that would allow them to do that.
00:02:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
app After that early scare though it was what we had hoped it would be, some free-flowing football from Newcastle, an incisive break down the left, Livramento doing his overlapping full-back bit again, putting a fabulous ball right through the corridor of uncertainty.
00:02:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I knew I'd be able to work that into one of these one day. Jacob Murphy on the far post to take a very well taken goal. Typical Newcastle really, fast transition, the speed of thought, far too much for a Leicester side that from the off looked a little bit at 6,007.
00:03:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle one up, we're wondering if fair that's a sign of things to come and Ten minutes further in, it looked as if it might well be. The ball was sort of half cleared. Schauer won tackle just in the Newcastle half.
00:03:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And whilst Murphy pelted through the middle to try and give him a brilliant through ball to make, Schauer had other ideas. He took a shot. He took a shot from 55 yards, which I learned afterwards is the yeah longest shot in the history of the Premier League to hit the woodwork.
00:03:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Shah's shot, beat the keeper, hit the bar and bounced back down. Murphy was sprinting through, managed to miscontrol it twice and still have time to put it in for Leicester defenders wondering why they had stopped to watch where the ball was going rather than running back and and marking Murphy.
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
They did look a complete mess. So we wondering how many goals were going to be. And Newcastle continued to dominate in that first half. another good Another good break by Liveramento towards the end of the half, which resulted in a ball for Izak to have a dribble. it It broke to Joe Linton, had a good shot on target, which was pushed out, but pushed out right into where Harvey Barnes could score and and very respectfully didn't go on any wild, crazy celebrations against his old team.
00:04:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
just simply received the acknowledgement of the rest of his team that he put us the three meal up and then we coasted through to half time, three up and looking every inch like the class above Leicester that we we we really are.
00:05:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now I'm not going to go on for too long on this. As I said, I'm going to stop now. That was the first half done.

Second Half and Final Score

00:05:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Here's a word from Bionique.
00:06:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
We will do that, Ken. Thank you very much for that advice. And Kev's supplement will be including large portions of baby milk.
00:06:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Into the second half and Newcastle huffed and puffed a little bit to try and continue their goal scoring. Understandably, I think they eased off a little bit. It was a little bit like when Man City went two up and then declared.
00:06:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle did a little bit the same. To be fair to Leicester, they did make a better game of it. There were a couple of substitutions as Juan Anote and Mavadidi came on.
00:06:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And that made them more combative in midfield. and I think they took the centre-half off, whose name escapes me, and Lewis moved... Sorry, no, they took Christensen off at left-back, moved Lewis, who was playing as a third centre-half,
00:06:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
and went four at the back instead of five, put the extra man in midfield. They were much more combative in the second half. and Still couldn't really string more than two passes together. The number of times they would try a forward ball that would roll through to Pope. and Yeah, they they didn't look like scoring, to be fair to them.
00:07:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And of course, they have managed to complete an eighth game at home without scoring, thereby setting a brand new record. not just for the Premier League, but for any football league side in England.
00:07:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
We coasted a little bit. Understandably, Howe turned to the substitutes bench to rest some of his big players, if we can call them that, before we have this double header of two home games, which are vitally important for us to get six points. We'll look at that later on.
00:07:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
But against much stronger opposition than Leicester could provide. at Manchester United on Sunday, day followed by Crystal Palace on Wednesday. it was Bruno and Joe Linton who came off, first of all, for Miley and Longstaff to come on, getting up at least a half an hour run out for both of them, which was excellent to see.
00:08:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Longstaff putting himself about. Haven't seen him have a decent run out for quite some time. Of course, at the start of the season, he was the player we needed in midfield to be able to to win a game. It seems a little bit of a forgotten man now. And even Eddie was hinting that this might be his last season.
00:08:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Everton very interested, apparently. But we'll see how that plays out later on.
00:08:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Isaac and Murphy came off. And Wilson. And Asula came on. Asula chanted for by the crowd before he came on. He gets 20 minutes.
00:08:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he ran about. He looks massive. He looks fast. He looks powerful. He looks like he either wants to score a worldie or... I don't think... He's still got a lot to learn, clearly.
00:09:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's very, very raw. and I was quite impressed with Wilson, actually, when he came on. He was running hard, closing down lots of the easy balls that the goalkeeper might have been trying to make.
00:09:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Good to see him back looking like he's approaching full fitness. What he needs is the goal to give him his 50 goals at Newcastle to to relax him, I think.
00:09:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
But fingers crossed, we'll provide a very useful tool in the box as we go into these last eight games.
00:09:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle coasted their way through. They had a few harem-scare-em moments, and which weren't really harem-scare-em at all. and It didn't look like scoring very much.
00:09:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'm honest, the game sort of petered out towards the end. Newcastle set off a 3-0 after about 80 minutes. It didn't seem like they were being very ambitious at all to try and go and get a fourth and a fifth and a sixth and a seventh, which would have put us up into fourth.
00:10:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But instead, we've ended up winning 3-0 very, very comfortably. A lot of the big players have only played for an hour or 70 minutes, so should be in a better position to recover fully for the game on Sunday.

Newcastle's League Position and Future Prospects

00:10:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the three points, it's very, very useful. Totally expected, of course, but you do have to beat what's in front of you and pick those points up. Now, I think it's important to just have a look forward, and I'm going to do that.
00:10:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
after I've given you this Zencastr advert.
00:10:41

00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe because I've never printed the new one off, but you hear the new one all of the time. I quite like that old one. Like Kev says, it's the St. James' Park of Zencastr adverts. How could you possibly change it?
00:11:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So three points tonight, three points tonight that lifts Newcastle level on points with Chelsea into fifth place. Chelsea ahead on goal difference. I think they should have a plus four on us goal difference. We're a point ahead of Manchester City, knock them into the Champions League places and push Aston Villa down to seventh, two points ahead of them.
00:12:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, The reason why it's fantastic that we picked up these three points is that we have a game in hand on all of those teams. And whereas we've been hoping that we can get our noses in front and stay ahead of the Aston Villas, the Bournemouths, the Brightons, the Man Cities, the teams that are chasing down one of the last Champions League places, for me,
00:12:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
The fact that Arsenal drew and Nottingham Forest lost on Saturday and that we have a game in hand on those two teams means that I think we should be looking upwards.
00:12:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
We shouldn't be worrying about whether we're going to finish ahead of Man City in fifth. We should make it our mission to overhaul Nottingham Forest, who are third at the moment.
00:12:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
And given that we play away at Arsenal and they have a game against Liverpool, which could easily be six points lost for them. Why aren't we chasing down Arsenal for the runners-up spot?
00:13:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe I'm being too optimistic with that. But, you know, was being optimistic about the Champions League being on way back in December when everyone was wondering if we were going to even be in a European race.
00:13:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think think the Champions League is very much on and I think this win tonight with the game in hand actually means that we can afford to lose one of these last eight games now and still it'd be in our own hands to finish in the top five.
00:13:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully we'll be in an even stronger position after a home game against Manchester United and a home game against Crystal Palace because everybody else will only have one game to play in the time that we're playing those.
00:13:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah You know, and we could be three, four points ahead of fifth place then. And I think we would all then be looking forward to to getting in points off Aston Villa, to playing Chelsea, to playing Arsenal, because draws are good enough in those games if we're already above them on points.
00:14:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll leave you with that thought. It's only half. It's only half a podcast tonight, but then there's only a third of the regular team here. So I'm OK with that. and I'm going to go to bed dreaming of runners-up spots and looking forward to the Manchester United game, 4.30 on Sunday, and that's on Tele2.
