Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Newcastle. My name is Ian Mackay. I'm hosting tonight and I'm hosting my good friend Michael Grameslaw for another Mac and Mickey mashup.
00:00:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
A Mac and Mickey Monday mashup, which we've got to put the Monday in because the M's work.
00:00:23
Michael Grahamslaw
Oh yes.
00:00:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I love a bit of alliteration. How are you doing, Michael?
00:00:30
Michael Grahamslaw
yes. Absolutely fantastic, man. Thank you very much. And how about you?
00:00:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, not too bad.

Player Training Post-Break

00:00:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've been, um... sitting, waiting with bated breath for that acceleration to kick in in the transfer window. Now the boys are back. They all came back to start training.
00:00:48
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:00:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I haven't seen any any reports of who didn't come back, but I mean, we know that players like Anthony Gordon will have a little bit of a longer rest than Bruno because they were away on international duty.
00:00:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Tino.
00:00:59
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, absolutely.
00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we'll get caught up with that later on in the week. and But we assume they all came back. It'll probably checked to see how fat they've got. Or how much how much work they've already done.
00:01:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Joe Linton was training two weeks ago in Brazil with his believe old team, so he should be super fit.
00:01:18
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah. That doesn't surprise me either.
00:01:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But...
00:01:21
Michael Grahamslaw
He seems like an absolute workhorse. I think if his wife tells him to take a day off, I imagine he's he's still trying to hit the gym in the morning just to get one last bit of the grinding. He seems like one of those players, and think that's why he's had such a great spell at Newcastle.
00:01:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:01:36
Michael Grahamslaw
so I love that about him.
00:01:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, he'd be a bit frustrated as well, missing out on the last three or four games, particularly watching us lose the last two of those games.
00:01:46
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, absolutely.
00:01:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fortunately, he hasn't gone mental and punched anybody because we didn't qualify for the Champions League. Because somehow, thanks to the referee of the Man United-Aston Villa game, we have still qualified for the Champions League.

Champions League Qualification Surprise

00:02:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we've got a really exciting discussion later on
00:02:00
Michael Grahamslaw
Oh, yes.
00:02:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
about about the Champions League, because as you pointed out, the first qualifying knockout game starts this week.
00:02:12
Michael Grahamslaw
Yep. First qualifying games are tomorrow.
00:02:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yes, as you listen to this on Tuesday morning, and hopefully, it's tonight that the Champions League starts.
00:02:16
Michael Grahamslaw
Mm-hmm.
00:02:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we're using that as an excuse to talk about something other than

Contract Talks: John Ruddy & Callum Wilson

00:02:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
nobody being signed by Newcastle. Although, let's be honest, Michael, that's not strictly true, is it?
00:02:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have got
00:02:35
Michael Grahamslaw
Oh no.
00:02:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
A contract signed in that we have we have offered um and had accepted a one-year extension to 11th choice goalkeeper John Ruddy.
00:02:38
Michael Grahamslaw
But who? but who
00:02:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So he will still be kicking about the place, apparently not only to model the XXXL large dressing gown and available in the Newcastle shop,
00:03:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
although he did a great job of that. But um Eddie Leverton about the place.
00:03:07
Michael Grahamslaw
Excellent.
00:03:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's ah he's a goalkeeper coach. He spends a lot of time, actually. He does a lot behind the scenes. I think I heard that he's had all of the under-18 and under-21 games as well.
00:03:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
So maybe he just thinks he has to be seen at those to justify the fact that he's standing around doing nothing for the rest of the season.
00:03:20
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:03:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry, you have to go to this? But given that we're...
00:03:31
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:03:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
where where waiting for James Trafford to join Nick Pope, Martin Dubravka, Odysseus, whatever his name is, and the guys who presumably need some sort of chance coming through in the under-21s and the under-18s, and Mark Gillespie.
00:03:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
He probably is around about 11, probably.
00:03:54
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:03:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, yeah, anyway, we've signed somebody. It's not particularly inspiring, is it?
00:04:02
Michael Grahamslaw
Yippee. No, to be fair, it's it's one of those. It kind of feels like what Jordan Henderson was to England when he kept getting all those call-ups. ah he's just and He seems that he's nice to have around the place.
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:04:14
Michael Grahamslaw
ah He's not realistically going to get any game time. And let's put it this way. As you mentioned, he does a bit of coaching with the lads. If in training, he's one of the best people to have around because he's always given 100% because he knows...
00:04:27
Michael Grahamslaw
I'm not really going to play any more games, but if I do get the chance, I want to be 100%. um You never know, you might get a game against Bromley or someone like that. um But if he's the consummate professional around the place and he's always helping out with training, he's got some good ideas, helps the youngsters, then why not?
00:04:44
Michael Grahamslaw
like City had Scott Carson, we've got John Ruddy. And hey, I quite like him.
00:04:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think i I think I was at one of the two games Scott Carsten played Manchester City because I think one of those games was at Newcastle, wasn't it?
00:05:00
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah. 4-3 against us.
00:05:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
but the at at capital what
00:05:06
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, I think it was a league game, actually. ah I think it was the one Ferran Torres got a hat-trick in the 4-3 against us. um
00:05:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:05:15
Michael Grahamslaw
We managed to get three goals against Manchester City under Steve Bruce and we still didn't win the game. Sums up everything.
00:05:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, i I remember that was my best ever multi-bet on the game.
00:05:29
Michael Grahamslaw
Oh...
00:05:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
i I had Joe Willock to have two shots on target and he hadn't had any up until about 60 minutes, but then he took a penalty and it was saved and then he knocked the rebound in.
00:05:33
Michael Grahamslaw
Scored, I think,
00:05:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I got my two shots on target in about two seconds, which is
00:05:40
Michael Grahamslaw
yeah. Yeah.
00:05:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Incredible.
00:05:44
Michael Grahamslaw
Beautiful stuff.
00:05:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, yes, so ah away from goalkeepers who don't play very much. um
00:05:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
We should also note, and we are going to go into a little bit more in depth, that Callum Wilson has announced that he has actually left the club. And we're not goingnna we're not going to be rude about Callum because he is a great servant.
00:06:03
Michael Grahamslaw
Yes.
00:06:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was frustratingly unavailable throughout the whole of last year and apparently unable to agree pay-as-you-play type deal to continue his role in the number nine shirt.
00:06:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
So he's announced today with a tear in his eye, although probably with rushing off to find who's going to pay him a bit more money, um that he's left Newcastle.
00:06:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we're going to talk about Callum in part two, I think, aren't we? Because we've both got some thoughts about how he he helped us through the darkest of days, to be honest.
00:06:39
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:06:47
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:06:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he helped us.
00:06:48
Michael Grahamslaw
Wouldn't be where we are without him.
00:06:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think we would. And I think he scored some really, really good goals. um
00:06:54
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:06:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
We had a little sniff that James Trafford was photographed in Newcastle this afternoon, but he wasn't. He was photographed in Carlisle, which is where he's from. so he's probably just visiting his parents nothing happening there ridiculously quiet no news we're not going to talk about it again um but i did read today that uh anthony alanga is away on holiday in portugal at the moment which possibly is explaining why he's not hot putting it up to the a1 to have a medical and sign on the dotted line at newcastle um but again we're guessing aren't we uh unai emery yesterday was
00:07:07
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:07:19
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:07:32
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:07:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
was apparently announcing that he was really interested in the player as well. So fingers crossed, this will get done and we won't have somebody pull the rook out from underneath our feet.
00:07:41
Michael Grahamslaw
Not another one.
00:07:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
One new rumour.
00:07:50
Michael Grahamslaw
o
00:07:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
One new rumour. A direct replacement, I think, for Callum Wilson, a second choice striker who's going to cost us absolutely nothing if it comes
00:07:58
Michael Grahamslaw
Not this one.
00:08:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
pass because Dominic Calvert-Lewin apparently is in discussion with Newcastle now our initial gut feel was fairly underwhelming because Callum Wilson was injury prone but he did score a lot of goals Dominic Calvert-Lewin is injury prone and doesn't score very many goals but that's unfair I know you've been looking at the stats Michael I know that's what you did think I know you were put right though
00:08:13
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:08:17
Michael Grahamslaw
Just a little bit.
00:08:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
about what he could offer to the team by one of your pals that wore flags. So why don't you just tell the people why Dominic Calvert-Lewin is not actually a bad shout for a striker coming on for the last 20 minutes.

Transfer Speculation: Dominic Calvert-Lewin

00:08:51
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, um I was in work today and i was um I was very much saying, oh, I'd cry if we signed Dominic Calvert-Lewin. um And I was very much put right, annoyingly.
00:09:01
Michael Grahamslaw
um It's annoying when someone gives you points and you can't argue against them. um But...
00:09:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:09:07
Michael Grahamslaw
Dominic Calvert-Lewin does offer Newcastle something a little bit different. um When you look at the statistics of aerial duels, Alexander Azak's down there with some of the worst. It is just 30-odd percent um that he wins. And it's it's one of those where, and when we're against teams with low block, like Everton on the final day of the season at times.
00:09:28
Michael Grahamslaw
In fact, that's harsh on Everton. It wasn't really Everton like that. But against teams we fazed Everton earlier in the season under Daesh. They played with a low block. We couldn't break them down.
00:09:39
Michael Grahamslaw
Brighton in the 1-0 where the beat will ah Danny Welbeck scored. Both utilising low blocks. all you What you can do is you can push Calvert-Lewin up against the the furthest defender, launch it towards them, and then you've got potentially Izak, hopefully Alanga, Gordon, Barnes, whoever it is, Murphy, whoever it is.
00:09:59
Michael Grahamslaw
You're already in that final third, picking it up and getting at the defence. So, It's something that Calvert-Lewin can offer that Newcastle currently don't have. um My answer to that was, oh, well, what about William Asula?
00:10:12
Michael Grahamslaw
um But let's be honest, it doesn't really seem like Eddie Howe trusts Asula enough to do that at the moment. um I would happily give him a chance, but at the same time,
00:10:23
Michael Grahamslaw
I'm not sure how comfortable I would be with William Ossula being our second choice striker next season. I know Gordon can play up front. I know Joe Linton could even play up front. We could put Alanga there if he signs.
00:10:36
Michael Grahamslaw
Barnes, you could even put there if necessary. So it's one of those where everyone could probably play there, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin would offer something completely different. And as much as I don't like the sign, I can sort of see the logic to it, which is...
00:10:52
Michael Grahamslaw
almost upsetting, if I'm honest. What do you think?
00:10:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, to be fair, it does make more sense to do it now when he's on a free transfer than when we were trying to negotiate a fee for him this time last year.
00:11:03
Michael Grahamslaw
True.
00:11:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
And although it might seem a bit for Ed Hammer to crack a nut, it's a bit root one is what we're talking about, isn't it? To try and get through the low block.
00:11:16
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:11:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whack it up as far as we can. The ball drops because he wins half the ball and we've got are schoolful players snapping around in the box instead of trying to work something out from the halfway line.
00:11:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, all ah all the big teams do that. Virgil van Dijk goes and plays centre-forward for Liverpool when they're really chasing the game.
00:11:34
Michael Grahamslaw
At times, yeah.
00:11:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Harry Maguire certainly goes up for Man United from about the 20th minute, doesn't he? But a very, very, very effective centre-forward in that that's their semi-final of the Europa League, that's for sure.
00:11:43
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, he's better as a striker and a winger than he is at a centre-back at the moment. 100%.
00:11:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So, OK, he's free. um I don't think he's going to be expensive. I heard about £60,000, which if we're just swapping Wilson's wage out for him.
00:11:52
Michael Grahamslaw
No.
00:11:58
Michael Grahamslaw
no
00:12:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And I know he's supposed to be injury-prone, but actually played quite a lot of football in the last two seasons.
00:12:04
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:12:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we can get him on the pitch. He should be available most of the games if he's only getting 20 minutes a game.
00:12:17
Michael Grahamslaw
yeah
00:12:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we will need somebody...
00:12:18
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, he 15 games in all competitions last season, which when you think about it, Everton played, i believe it's 44, maybe 43. I can't remember off the top my head.
00:12:29
Michael Grahamslaw
you know That's almost 30 games that he was available for, and that's certainly a lot more than what Wilson was available for. ah The only thing that worries me um is the fact that he's had six hamstring injuries since 2020.
00:12:42
Michael Grahamslaw
um But I'm also sitting here and thinking... He also had a broken toe injury, which kept him up for 126 days or 131 games, which just takes me back to Harvey Barnes at the start of the season, where it was like, hang on, you've stubbed your toe, you've kicked the wall or something. how How are you up for this long? Turns out it was happening to someone else as well.
00:13:03
Michael Grahamslaw
But back to the point, six hamstring injuries. so um well But what I will say is, if you remember back under Ancelotti, Dominic Calvert-Lewin was one of the best strikers in the league under Carlo Ancelotti.
00:13:17
Michael Grahamslaw
And as much as you know Eddie Howe isn't Carlo Ancelotti, if Howe can get him playing half as well as what he did then, then you know he he probably is a good second choice so well car to not kalamos and to Alexander Izak. So I'm not sure I can complain about it.
00:13:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, um not for free. I think ah maybe maybe that's good.
00:13:40
Michael Grahamslaw
No.
00:13:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
That that keeps our powder dry, our money in the bank for a cent a half, or maybe the number 10, apparently, that we were thinking of when we were after Ciao Pedro.
00:13:47
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:13:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I don't know. So we welcome this news with ah e trepidation, but we do welcome the news.
00:14:01
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah. Just something to add there as well. Yeah.
00:14:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's an England international, isn't he? So, you know, if we are getting if we're getting some games against the that third and fourth co teams at home in the Champions League, give Izak most of the night off and start Calvert-Lewin.
00:14:10
Michael Grahamslaw
yeah
00:14:24
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, it's always a potential. One of the things that's just crossed my mind as well is it's one of those where, you know, I i don't think Isaac's going to leave this summer, but it wouldn't surprise me if he does next summer, just so Newcastle can get some money out of him and get a lot of time out of him.
00:14:40
Michael Grahamslaw
You eventually he is going to want to go to like a Real Madrid or a PSG or something like that. um So I think when that does happen, if you've got the guarantee of Calvert-Lewin, who's, you know, linked in with the side, and then you sign two strikers next season with the Isaac money, ah one, you know, your starter, I would have said Jokeres if he wasn't off to Arsenal, and then maybe one that's a little bit more of a risk, at least then you'd have Calvert-Lewin that's got a year in him that would have been able to pick up the slack. So,
00:15:14
Michael Grahamslaw
is The more I think about this Calvert-Lewin deal, on a free, it does kind of make sense and I wouldn't hate it. But what what i would get worried about is if Izak got injured because then you know you've got two strikers who between them scored four Premier League goals last season. and But you can't think like that.
00:15:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
i i i would I think Asula would grab that chance with two hands, Michael.
00:15:39
Michael Grahamslaw
I'd hope so.
00:15:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd love to see him. Anyway, we have waffled on for a long time, given that there's no transfer news. Let's hear from Ken.

Reflecting on Callum Wilson's Impact

00:16:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
We certainly will, Ken. Part two. And I think we have to mark the departure of Callum Wilson with a little bit of a reminisc about how good he was for Newcastle.
00:16:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Certainly in when he first got there, he scored 49 goals in five years, although he was injured for the last 18 months of that, really.
00:16:40
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:16:48
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:16:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think that's a great record. He was a proud record in the Newcastle, the iconic Newcastle number nine shirt. And it's not an exaggeration to say that his goals in those first couple of years when Bruce was at the helm um probably kept us in the Premier League.
00:17:13
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, 100%.
00:17:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do agree?
00:17:15
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, 100%. I think it's one of those where I remember the days where every single game we were sitting there and going, why are Callum Wilson and Alain Samaxaman playing for this team? Because every single game they were getting us out of a hole and it was was nine bang average players if we're being nice to the rest of the team.
00:17:36
Michael Grahamslaw
Because let's be honest, Bruce had them all ah playing absolutely shockingly. You look at Fabian Schardt, Joe Linton, Emile Kraft now and you think, wow, they're so good under Eddie Howe. But under Steve Bruce, we were the worst team in the league somehow still picking up points because of Callum Wilson and Alain Saint-Maximin. So...
00:17:57
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, I think without Wilson, there's no way we are where we are right now. um And yeah, it's it's just the right thing to do to sort of speak about him in a positive way.
00:18:07
Michael Grahamslaw
Now he's gone. We we said in the last couple of months, we've said, look, is it time for Wilson to move on? And it's not just for Newcastle, it's for Wilson as well. I think he wants one last season sort of at the top where he's number one.
00:18:21
Michael Grahamslaw
striker and he's he's not going to get that here so yeah as good as he is i think it's it's the deal that's best for both parties I think
00:18:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think he'll um stay in the Premier League? I mean, people have said he's a good fit for a team like Leeds. He actually wouldn't be a bad would be a bad fit for a team like Sunderland, actually.
00:18:37
Michael Grahamslaw
yeah
00:18:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
but But there's a chance of some bigger money, probably, if he goes down and spearheads wrecks on a drive through the Championship. What do you think?
00:18:51
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, Wrexham's the one I've been hearing um personally. I'm not sure we will want to, and I do think the rumours of Wrexham are just because ah they've got a bit of money.
00:19:02
Michael Grahamslaw
I'm sure they'd be happy to splash it on someone. um Birmingham was one that was mentioned a few weeks back. They've just spent £10 million Wrexham. um but the Japanese striker from Stad Renz who was at Celtic. His name's gone on my head.
00:19:17
Michael Grahamslaw
um But he's done well as well. So they're not going to ask for it they're not going to go for another striker. So for me, I think if he goes down, it'll have to be to a Wrexham or maybe a Leicester, see what their new manager wants, depending on who it is.
00:19:31
Michael Grahamslaw
um But I'd like to see him maybe at someone like Burnley. um Obviously, they've just signed Kyle Walker ah for five million. The chance for Callum Wilson to go there um and you know stay number one in the Premier League, still play for a club that wants to play good football, um although I'm not sure they'll really get the chance in the Premier League.
00:19:53
Michael Grahamslaw
But it could be a really good way for him just to end his Premier League career at a club and potentially keep them up because he'll be their number one attacker really next to Marcus Edwards and I think he could he could be you know the Alan Sam Maximan to Callum Wilson for Burnley like he was in twenty twenty twenty one for Newcastle
00:20:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
My favourite season for Catlin Wilson at Newcastle is the exact first season where they interchanged. And I really liked the fact that it was a shock when they both got to play at the same time.
00:20:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But but enough they didn't half work quite well together.
00:20:29
Michael Grahamslaw
yeah
00:20:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Maybe that's just the defence panicking because they don't know who to mark first. But I do remember a wonderful... and
00:20:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
A wonderful goal where it was Wilson who was the middle man and picked the ball up from Miggie and squared it for Izak to score lovely goal into the top corner take the lead in a match that we had been trailing in away at Brentford.
00:20:54
Michael Grahamslaw
Brentford's yeah. Yeah.
00:20:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fabulous goal there.
00:20:56
Michael Grahamslaw
remember the one. Yeah.
00:20:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're not very long after that. um I think it was at Everton when we won 4-4-1. all one
00:21:07
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah. The killer, the third.
00:21:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
he curled one from the edge. I mean, doesn't score many goals from outside the box, Callum Wilson, but he curled one from outside the box.
00:21:13
Michael Grahamslaw
No, beautiful.
00:21:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was just all one move, trapped it, turned and curled it, and Pickford got nowhere near it, right into the top corner.
00:21:22
Michael Grahamslaw
No.
00:21:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Two fantastic goals.
00:21:23
Michael Grahamslaw
Tiny arms couldn't get anywhere near.
00:21:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, of course not. Well, Nick Pope wouldn't have stopped that
00:21:29
Michael Grahamslaw
True.
00:21:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
and What I'm looking forward to, because and undoubtedly they'll do it, won't they, is the Newcastle United website putting the highlights reel together of all 49 of these league goals.
00:21:44
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, 100%. ah hundred percent
00:21:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because we'll see there, we'll see all sorts of goals. So fast, that goal, that goal where he nips in front of the centre half and flicks it with the outside of his foot to back up Babshah's Thunderbolt to beat Nottingham Forest in the first game of the season.
00:22:00
Michael Grahamslaw
Nottingham Forest. Yeah.
00:22:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um He scored in the first game of the season pretty regularly. ah remember one against Cottonham after about two minutes and we ended up losing that game.
00:22:11
Michael Grahamslaw
West. Yeah. else Same with ah West Ham, when Antonio had one of the the games of his career. um Wilson obviously loved playing against West Ham as well. sper To be fair, the one that sticks in my mind is actually but from before that season. It was actually under Bruce, and it was against Palace, where...
00:22:34
Michael Grahamslaw
Patrick Vieira just took charge Palace and Ben Teke was starting to come good. He should have scored five against us. We were abysmal. And then Callum Wilson, as he does, the ball's just floating around in the air. Corner comes in.
00:22:49
Michael Grahamslaw
It's like two headers, I think, and it's just floating around the box. Just overhead kick, top corner, and you're sitting there and you're going...
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh yeah.
00:22:58
Michael Grahamslaw
wow, what a player we've signed.
00:22:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
How do you do that?
00:23:00
Michael Grahamslaw
What is he doing under Steve Bruce Newcastle United? And just moments like that where, you know, he's been that He was there for the bad times. He got us through the bad times. And I'm really, really glad he got a lift a trophy with Newcastle. Because I think the only thing that's missing was the Champions League goal. Obviously, he had the four appearances. We didn't score that many outside of the PSG game. um But we were in the group of death and four very hard teams. But I would have loved it if he just got that one Champions League goal.
00:23:32
Michael Grahamslaw
And yeah he would have done everything for us then.
00:23:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just to be fair to him, um at home against Dortmund, he hit the bar right at the end, didn't he? We hit the bar twice in the last five minutes.
00:23:41
Michael Grahamslaw
Yes, I'd forgot about that. Yeah.
00:23:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if that had gone in, if that had gone in, we might well have got through that group of deaths. And he could have at least another two games to score another goal.
00:23:48
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:23:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that's all, you know, if ae me aunt was a man and not a woman, she'd be my uncle, or whatever that saying is that I've now butchered.
00:24:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
But you know what I mean.
00:24:03
Michael Grahamslaw
I prefer your version, I can't lie.
00:24:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, yeah and Callum Wilson, we salute you. Five-year contract. Disappointing not to see you enough last year.
00:24:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think everybody was disappointed, but nobody would have been more disappointed than Callum Wilson, by the way.
00:24:17
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:24:21
Michael Grahamslaw
Oh yeah, 100%.
00:24:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um but But what a great signing he was, and and he delivered he delivered right the way through. and I'm going to pause there, because I've done enough of a Wilson fest, I think,
00:24:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
and ask you to do the Zencastro advert, because I've got a really interesting chat in part three.
00:24:42
Michael Grahamslaw
oh Here at the Global Sports Podcast Network, we've spent a lot of time selecting our delivery platform. And Zencaster? Zencaster came out the clear winner. 00:25:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
It does cut out more than just ums and ahs, doesn't it, Michael? There's 22 other speech sort of reflexes, which i I think we...
00:25:16
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah. Yes.
00:25:21
Michael Grahamslaw
And geordie terms such as we,
00:25:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think Why I'm on, yeah, i think we I think we ought to start listing those just to keep this adverb fresh until they write the new fantastic adverb.

Zencastr Advertisement

00:25:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway.
00:25:32
Michael Grahamslaw
We take out the ums and ahs and replace them every time. I'm down.
00:25:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway. Part three. As you pointed out, People are listening to this from Tuesday morning and it is the day the Champions League officially starts with their qualification rounds.

Champions League Draw Speculation

00:25:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're not in directly involved until they do the draw on the 25th of August or something. So we play two or three league games before we know who we're going to play.
00:25:56
Michael Grahamslaw
yeah
00:25:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, we have got a little bit of an inkling of who we might play in that there are four of eight, is it?
00:26:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or nine?
00:26:10
Michael Grahamslaw
ah Seven or eight. I think, yeah sorry, four pots of nine. ah You're right, and there's still eight teams overall to be confirmed.
00:26:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we do we do know pot A, pot B, pot C, pot D, which we are in, and we're right at the bottom in terms of the ah coefficient.
00:26:21
Michael Grahamslaw
But that's it.
00:26:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that all stands after this campaign. and
00:26:35
Michael Grahamslaw
Oh, yes.
00:26:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we know we're going to have a home game and an away game against the team from Pot one, pot two, pot three, and pot four. And we're not allowed play any other English side in the in the the qualifying table.
00:26:52
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:26:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, Michael, what are your dream times? Who can we get?
00:27:00
Michael Grahamslaw
Oh.
00:27:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And, you know, who we who do we want to play at home? Pot one is full of the teams you'd expect it to be. but Real Madrid.
00:27:11
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, there's no easy games.
00:27:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bayern Munich, PSG, Inter Milan, Dortmund and Barcelona. We've got two of those, one at home and one away.
00:27:17
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:27:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think?
00:27:21
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah. I think we've already played Dortmund. We've already done PSG. Let's get two new teams. We've technically already done the San Siro with AC Milan. So I hope the away game isn't at the San Siro just for the the lads to get a few more games in there. i Let's be honest, the teams from pot one, I'm not expecting us to get anything against. um Maybe if you had Dortmund at home or in there at home, you might be able to get a result.
00:27:48
Michael Grahamslaw
But I'm not expecting to be either of them. So let's go to the Bernabeu. Or, you know, let's go to the Allianz. Maybe even the new... Well, actually, it's not the Nou Camp because the Nou Camp's under construction.
00:28:00
Michael Grahamslaw
So, yeah. Play Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. Bring Bayern Munich here. We're probably going to lose to both of them, but I think we'll lose to most teams in pot one.
00:28:11
Michael Grahamslaw
Maybe get a result in the home leg. But at the end of the day, you want to play the best in the Champions League in the group stage when you know that you've got two teams in pot four and pot three. That's where you're going to get your points.
00:28:22
Michael Grahamslaw
Do you agree with that or am I being a bit...
00:28:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
get ah well now I get we ah get where you're coming from. I get where you're coming from. personally Personally, I would love PSG at home again because two years ago, i mean, it's a different team. I get that.
00:28:37
Michael Grahamslaw
Very different team.
00:28:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they look they'll come looking for revenge. But they are the champions. Let's play them. ah
00:28:44
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:28:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got eight game eight games and we probably need about 11 points to make sure we get through to some sort of knockout game.
00:28:51
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, that's fair.
00:28:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
so we don't have to win all of these i'd love psp at home again um and i don't mind away from home a barcelona would be lovely buying munich would be scary i think if we went to inter Milan we would have a chance of getting something anyway what two is much more interesting um in pot two we've got leverkusen atletico madrid benfica atalanta villa real
00:29:07
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, that's great.
00:29:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Juventus, Antarkt Frankfurt and Club Bruges. Now, I can see points here in the whole game.
00:29:23
Michael Grahamslaw
Oh, yes. Absolutely. um Just to add to that, Benfica and Club Bruges are two teams that we've picked out that should make it through the qualifying. um Obviously, they haven't qualified just yet, um but it you know it looks likely that they'll probably be two of the teams that do.
00:29:38
Michael Grahamslaw
um
00:29:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair enough.
00:29:39
Michael Grahamslaw
But for me there, the team I really want to face out of those is Juventus because the old lady... you know I remember Andy Griffin, the goal, vaguely. I was...
00:29:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:29:51
Michael Grahamslaw
I was seven or eight. um Seven, sorry. um And i um I remember it faintly. Same season or just before the Leverkusen game where we won 3-1. Not the same area of time, but that's like my first memories, those two seasons.
00:30:08
Michael Grahamslaw
um So I remember it well. And I would love... to see Newcastle United side come up against a Juventus side in the Champions League that have Lloyd Kelly at centre-back because I think we could we could definitely beat them and it's a big name.
00:30:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yes.
00:30:25
Michael Grahamslaw
It's another big name that you could take off the list but...
00:30:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
mean do we want them but Do we want them at home so that we play in black and white and they don't? Or do we want them away so we could take that lovely navy and orange third kit and win?
00:30:41
Michael Grahamslaw
Because of the quality of the other teams, I'd actually say I want them away because I'd be a little concerned.
00:30:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do we mind?
00:30:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:30:48
Michael Grahamslaw
but i mean, let's say we get Leverkusen or Atletico Madrid. I don't want to go to Atletico Madrid's ground or Leverkusen's ground. I'd want them to come here. Frankfurt, Club Rouge, Villarreal, Atlanta. I would fancy us to get results against.
00:31:05
Michael Grahamslaw
Benfica, maybe we go to... You know what? I want Benfica. I want revenge. for the Europa League twenty twelve thirteen
00:31:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:31:14
Michael Grahamslaw
Oscar Cardozo, Rodrigo, they gave me nightmares.
00:31:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:31:17
Michael Grahamslaw
i want to I want revenge. I want them to be having nightmares about Alexander Rezac and Anthony Gordon. That's what I want.
00:31:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
We got so close there. I mean, I know we did we lose the home leg or did we draw the home leg?
00:31:29
Michael Grahamslaw
I drew the home leg.
00:31:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
We lost the home leg.
00:31:32
Michael Grahamslaw
i
00:31:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then again, and then it was that that then they went ahead, but we we got one back and what we needed was one more goal.
00:31:38
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, Cicero.
00:31:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
to go through on away goals and we didn't get it. We had chances as well. That was close. Pot 3 then. I'll go with Benfica. And as long as we have Juventus, I'd like to play them at home, actually.
00:31:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
That would be marvellous.
00:31:53
Michael Grahamslaw
ah
00:31:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Pot 3. but These are guineas. like
00:31:59
Michael Grahamslaw
ah there's There's a couple in there I wouldn't want.
00:32:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
PSV.
00:32:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would have all of these at home. I'd fancy us. PSV, Ajax, Napoli, Sporting Lisbon, Olympiakos, Slavia Prague, Bodo Glimt, if they qualify, and Marseille.
00:32:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now I had a bit of a dream somehow, I'm remembering that we play Marseille. I think Marseille is the home game. That's three points, isn't it?
00:32:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Where would you go?
00:32:25
Michael Grahamslaw
I'd want revenge on them as well.
00:32:27
Michael Grahamslaw
Didier Drogba, I want revenge. And I also wouldn't mind seeing Joe Linton put the studs in the back of Mason Greenwood's head. So that's one of those that, you know what, give us Marseille because I'm not going to lie, they seem to be getting in the habit of just signing the players the worst reputations these days.
00:32:44
Michael Grahamslaw
I'd love to see Joe Linton put two la two studs into them. So yeah, I'd like that. ah on ah On a nicer note, I really don't want to play Napoli because there's a reason they're the the upcoming force in Italian football. um I know you said we can sit there and go, one of their best players is Scott McTominay.
00:33:03
Michael Grahamslaw
They're nothing. But they're genuinely a very good side. PSV and Ajax, I'd be more than happy to face. Sport and Lisbon are losing Jokeres, so a lot of their threat's going to be gone.
00:33:14
Michael Grahamslaw
They're looking to replace him with Luis Suarez. No, not that one. The one that's linked to Sunderland. And then you've got Olympiacos, Slavia Prague and Bodo Glint. Genuinely, I'd take any of them. But I think the best away day there would probably be Ajax, the Amsterdam Arena. So hopefully we get them.
00:33:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
That'd be nice. all Or sporting Lisbon early in the campaign when it's still warm. That would be a good away day in Lisbon.
00:33:39
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, revenge against them as well, actually. There's so many teams we need revenge against for knocking us out of previous European tournaments. Let's just get it.
00:33:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, and what gives me great hope that we will in fact get the 12 points or 11, 12 points we need to get into another game after this is the quality of the teams in top four, which has us at the bottom.
00:34:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, and not all of these are qualified, but we're expecting them to come through the qualifications.
00:34:03
Michael Grahamslaw
Yes.
00:34:11
Michael Grahamslaw
Yes.
00:34:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're highest coefficient, which is why they're in here, but they've got to get through a qualifying competition.
00:34:15
Michael Grahamslaw
Coefficient, yeah.
00:34:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, FC Copenhagen.
00:34:20
Michael Grahamslaw
Correct.
00:34:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
That one, which is... which is the Yugoslavian team, which I can't remember. what Who is Kvone Vedes?
00:34:30
Michael Grahamslaw
ah Red star bell grade.
00:34:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's right. Monaco, Ferenc Varos, who, by the way, we yeah we we we beat.
00:34:38
Michael Grahamslaw
Oh, excellent pronunciation.
00:34:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did we not beat during our 1969 fair cup run?
00:34:44
Michael Grahamslaw
Yes. I can't remember the score, but that's the only reason I know them. We've beat them before in the past. Yes.
00:34:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Galatasaray, Celtic.
00:34:52
Michael Grahamslaw
Great memory.
00:34:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Union SG? Is that a German team or a Swiss team?
00:34:56
Michael Grahamslaw
Yes. From Belgium.
00:34:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Belgian. Yeah.
00:35:00
Michael Grahamslaw
Union Saint-Gerlain.
00:35:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
da That's right, yeah. I love them. um Atletico, Atletic Club, that's Bilbao, isn't it?
00:35:08
Michael Grahamslaw
Bilbao, yeah.
00:35:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And So look, I mean, I'd have any of them at home, I think. It would be good.
00:35:15
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, I'd take any of them at home.
00:35:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would probably avoid Celtic and Galatasaray away from them and Atletic, Bilbao.
00:35:22
Michael Grahamslaw
Oh... See, I'd love Celtic away from home. Celtic Park, they do tend to do quite well at Celtic Park against English teams, so maybe that's a reason not to. um But I think the atmosphere in a game between Celtic and Newcastle in the Champions League would be incredible.
00:35:38
Michael Grahamslaw
I just wouldn't want Galatasaray Turkey away from Let's be honest, we had a bit of bad luck with atmospheres the last time we were in the Champions League. We had three the best in Europe.
00:35:49
Michael Grahamslaw
Galatasaray would definitely be up there on a Champions League night where let's let imagine either Galatasaray or Newcastle can qualify with a win and then we end up playing them.
00:36:00
Michael Grahamslaw
They'll have flares. The stadium will probably be on fire. it be It would be insane. and There are a few good teams in there, Monaco and Bilbao included, but
00:36:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:36:09
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, i'd I'd take any of them at St. James' Park.
00:36:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we've got to, and we've got to, effectively, we've got to win three and draw two

Closing Reflections & Lighthearted Commentary

00:36:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
or win four and we're in.
00:36:17
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:36:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, I mean, I think, I think it's, for me, I'm excited looking at that.
00:36:24
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, it's very exciting.
00:36:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm really looking forward. and Do you think, do you think the rest of Europe is looking at pot four, thinking, oh, Newcastle are in pot four there. You don't want to get them that draw?
00:36:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or do you not think we've got that reputation yet?
00:36:36
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:36:39
Michael Grahamslaw
I think teams are probably looking at us and going, yeah, we probably want to avoid them. But I think they're also thinking that potentially about Galatasaray, Monaco and Bilbao, because maybe not Bilbao.
00:36:52
Michael Grahamslaw
But I look at Bilbao and I think they're a fantastic team, um particularly the fact that everyone's from the Basque region. Galatasaray away, that's more Daunton than St. James' Park, I believe. And then Monaco, as much as you'd maybe like to have them, they have made a few signings.
00:37:09
Michael Grahamslaw
Obviously, Paul Pogba's just gone there. Game m time, who knows how much they'll get. But I think in regards to quality, people will be looking and going, we don't want Newcastle, but...
00:37:20
Michael Grahamslaw
I think if you're going to travel somewhere, you'd much rather travel to Newcastle than to Galatasaray.
00:37:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah So we'll have Celtic at home. We'll love that we'll have that
00:37:30
Michael Grahamslaw
Oh, yes.
00:37:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
but atmosphere, but we'll have it at home working for us.
00:37:36
Michael Grahamslaw
Works for me.
00:37:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And hopefully Brendan Rogers can have that smug smile wiped off his face. He's always got a smug smile and he's done nothing to be smug about, but there you go.
00:37:46
Michael Grahamslaw
now
00:37:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
you Well, I hope that has whetted our listeners' appetite, your appetite, as much as it's whetted my appetite. to find out who we're actually going to get drawn against. And I will now will be watching the qualifying games with a little bit more interest. Although I don't think these teams that they've got will actually start on qualifying League One, will they?
00:38:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's the Gibraltar Red Imps that are playing probably Chelsea's ladies team.
00:38:13
Michael Grahamslaw
No, I think...
00:38:17
Michael Grahamslaw
but
00:38:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've probably somehow managed to wangle that.
00:38:22
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, the best team in there tomorrow night is Malmo.
00:38:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:38:25
Michael Grahamslaw
um ah So yeah, you probably won't see any of them in the prem in the Champions League, but it's it's good to see the likes of New Saints are in there, Lincoln Redimps, etc. So, you know, teams that you might be familiar with, but more than likely not.
00:38:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent. Well, that was fancy. Fancy, we talked for nearly 40 minutes and got all excited. And really, the only thing we had to speak about was that we might be signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free.
00:38:52
Michael Grahamslaw
Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
00:38:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think we we've got this podcasting practice, Michael. We can make nothing sound interesting for 40 minutes.
00:38:58
Michael Grahamslaw
We have.
00:39:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well done. as but i mean, we're blowing our own trumpet there. Perhaps our listeners could send us a message on YouTube to say, I listened to you listen Listen to
00:39:09
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, you've said that and every listener we have is gone. I'm not listening to this anymore. Aw.
00:39:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
If they didn't listen to the end, then nobody heard it. So it'll be all right. Anyway, very thanks for joining us. i hope you've enjoyed that. Thank you very much indeed, Michael, for your insight and enthusiasm as ever.
00:39:25
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:39:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think what we have scheduled is Kevin, Nicola and Joanne recording a wildcard Wednesday tomorrow night.
00:39:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So expect a solo from Michael or me.
00:39:37
Michael Grahamslaw
yeah
00:39:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll see you then.
