Iain covers for sickly Kev and reviews Newcastle's deals that have been completed, deals that look completed that haven't actually been completed yet, and exciting new links to potential deals that will probably get nowhere near completion.

Introduction and Host Update

00:00:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome to the Daily Newcastle. My name is Ian Mackay. I am hosting myself tonight. Unfortunately, I'm meant to be with Kev tonight and the poor, delicate little flower has obviously got so exhausted by the stress and strain of marshalling Joanne and Nicola on last night's 20-minute offering.
00:00:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
um that he's halted throughout the day and he's too ill to join us tonight. So it's me doing a yeah ah solo. and Regular listeners might know that when I announced on Tuesday night that the next one would be done by Joanne, Kev and Nicola, therefore expect a solo from either me or Michael.
00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And I was wrong because the three of them did manage to get one out last night, but I wasn't far off.

Transfer Update Part 1: Completed Deals

00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just me. Michael's got a day off. He has offered to come in at midnight and talk to me drunkenly, but we don't need that.
00:01:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And to be honest, Michael probably doesn't need that either. Anyway, it's a transfer update, transfer diary, whatever you want to call it.

Anthony Elanga's Transfer Details

00:01:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Part one is completed deals because we've got one and it's very exciting. um Now we're recording quite late because we were told Michael is in the know.
00:01:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was told that the Anthony Alanga transfer would be officially announced tonight, and that has been, well, until tomorrow, for some strange reason. I mean, I suggest that he's failed his medical, but so don't worry about that.
00:01:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
He has, don't think he's missed a game through injury, and you certainly since he left Manchester United. He's a very robust young man. um It's just taken too long to get all the photographs taken and the interviews and things as well.
00:02:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
so expect that sometime in the morning when everybody is up watch it rather than when everyone is sitting and wondering why they've not heard anything. and But yeah, Anthony Alanga is a Newcastle United player. We've seen him.
00:02:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's down here, I think it was. Spotted him landing at Newcastle Airport and being whisked away to the training ground. Adam Pearson was at the training ground last night and saw the car arrive and saw him get out.
00:02:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
We know he's there. Followed quickly by the club doctor by the way, so I think we started the yeah medical last night and presumably completed it today.
00:02:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'm sure it was all clear. There'd be a lot of a lot of new kits to change into, new training kits to change into, loads of photographs to take, lots of interviews to do. You know how we love it to announce it on the website.
00:03:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's probably just taken a little bit too long and we'll get that in the morning.

Newcastle's Missed Opportunities and Future Prospects

00:03:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
but What a great signing that is for Newcastle. One of the fastest players in the Premier League.
00:03:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
He probably thinks he's the fastest. We did see, posted on his TikTok this week from Portugal, him running his 100 metres in 10.39 seconds or something, which is super fast.
00:03:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
There definitely will be some 100 metre trials with Anthony Gordon and Willis Sula very early in um in the training schedule. I'm absolutely sure they'm going to have to they're going to have to decide who wears the Speed King crown.
00:03:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because boys will be boys, you know. um So he'll be an announced tomorrow and he will report for training presumably on Friday when the rest of the guys who were away on international duty report back for training there for day one of the preseason which is great we could see him make his debut in a fortnight away at Celtic in the first of our uh preseason friendlies that is fantastic now what does mean is that i can say that he is an international for speeding because i love a pun speeding not speed speed and and he's fast yeah i i know you got that
00:04:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And I can also say that we are
00:04:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ni'i'i'langa looking for a right winger because we've bought Ilanga. We're Ni'i'langa. Look, they're the component parts of the second point I was trying to make. If you can just assemble them yourself, I'd be much appreciated for me.
00:04:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, one thing I wanted to mark on this was that ah fellow YouTuber, Adam Pearson, Heard the news last night, thought it was confirmed.
00:05:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
His first instinct was to nip the Newcastle first thing this morning, make a shirt, a black and white shirt with Alanga's name on the back, and number 14, for some reason. Adam, that's Isaac's number, and he ain't giving it up.
00:05:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
He likes having the same number as his hero, Thierry Henry. I don't think he'll take the number nine, Thierry I might be forced into it, i guess. But I didn't agree with your choice for number 14. Anyway, gets that, jumps on a train, goes to Peterborough, goes up in a little aeroplane, jumps out, looks hilariously sick as he's landing.
00:05:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very disorientated. Not a good look at him. But hey, you know, what a way to mark our first new signing. What are you going to do for the next lot that come in?
00:05:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there will be more. We might even spend more than 52 million on on ah another player. but I'm not sure how you top throwing yourself out of a plane. and Fair play to him. He got back in the taxi, got the train back up to Newcastle and was at the Benton training ground in time to snap a picture of Anthony Alanga arriving to start his medical.
00:06:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, that's dedication to the cause, Adam. Dedication to the cause. Well done. Now, that is our completed deal.
00:06:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
going talk about the completed deals that aren't completed yet in part two, but I feel I have to to put a bit of a downer on another completed deal from a fortnight ago where Chelsea did in five hours what we couldn't do in five weeks and persuaded João Pedro to sign from Brighton for them for 50 million.
00:06:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
They got his visa sorted and sent him off to the Club World Cup. And if you haven't seen it, Don't check the highlights out of the semi-final of the Club World Cup. Chelsea played Luminese from Brazil and <unk>o Pedro scored not once but twice to deal their progress through che the Club World Cup final.
00:07:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Both not scrappy tap-ins, not a header from a corner, both worldies cutting in, beating a man and curling it or blasting it into the top corner. um Both superb goals actually. I mean, what a signing it would have been.
00:07:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we haven't got to think about that. There are better players out there and that's what we're waiting for. um I'm mentioning it, of course, because in doing that and putting Chelsea through the semi-final and into the final, he earned them an extra £25 million in prize money and therefore in 90 minutes has repaid half of his transfer fee.
00:07:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um in the first game for him. I mean, you know, couldn't really have worked out any better for them, could it? But a matter, good luck to him. He's a great player. We thought he was a great player.
00:07:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
He'd be a great player wherever he was, ah but we're not to be too worried about that. If he didn't want to come here, we didn't want him. We will find strikers, and we'll talk about that later.
00:08:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We'll find strikers who do want to come to Newcastle, and they'll be the ones that will be in our heart forever. Now I'm going pause there because there are no more finished deals.
00:08:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'll have Ken a little bit early. Here he goes.

Ongoing Transfer Negotiations

00:08:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you very much, Ken, and we're in part two, which I think are completed deals that haven't yet completed, if you see what I mean.
00:09:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, we've assumed these deals, certainly we've assumed the first deal I want to talk about has been completed. um James Trappard signing as goalkeeper, backup, first choice, backup, competition for Nick Pope from Burnley.
00:09:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
um which has been done for a week. ah James Trafford, to be fair, it was done 12 months ago. um Apparently, James Trafford's happy with the terms he's been offered.
00:09:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
He wants to come and play at Newcastle. We saw on James Trafford's Instagram the message from Nick Pope. See you soon, Saga, which meant that he thought he was coming.
00:09:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, they're both old mates from their days at Burnley. um But still no news on that and until today when i think Craig Holt revealed that there is still an 8 to 10 million difference between what we want to offer and what Burnley will accept.
00:10:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now,
00:10:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
move that's ah that's a big difference when you're talking about 25 35 or 30 to 40. thirty forty I mean, it's a lot. it's ah It's a big difference.
00:10:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whether we can find an extra couple of millions right on what we're offering and and do what we've done with Alanga and negotiate some extras that we probably won't end up having to pay.
00:10:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Look, James Trafford, I think, from everything that I hear, ah the players that have played with him, the coaches that have coached him, him from his own mouth, he's superb.
00:10:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's going to be England's number one for the next 10 years. And if we want him to be Newcastle number one for the next 10 years, maybe minus the very next year when Nick Pope's book starts, which is what I think will happen.
00:11:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then we should find that extra money. I mean, if you don't get a world-class goalkeeper for peanuts, do we? and So surely we can find a way to be able to bridge this gap.
00:11:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's said on different podcasts that he wants to come. Pope obviously thinks that he's coming from his a little sats with him. ah But so far, nothing's happening. And today, Greg Hope said, if we can't budge on this,
00:11:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle are ready to walk away from this deal. Now, some might say that might be something that Newcastle have, are not to budge on because they have realised that in Pope and Dubravka, we've actually got two pretty good Premier League quality goalkeepers who would do for this year if we wanted to keep his 35 million or 25 28 or whatever it that we'd on Saturday.
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
that we spend on fat in our back pocket to be able to push the boat out for a second striker, for example, or for a backup midfield player who could slot in with Bruno, Sonali, Joe Linton et al, without there being any drop off in performance. yeah That might be true. I think if I was to, I think that right winger is the right one to get first. That is the bigger toll that we had in the team.
00:12:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think a backup to Alex Izak is also a hole that we need to fill. Certainly a striker who could play a little bit more withdrawn or behind Izak would be a very interesting addition.
00:12:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I don't think Willis Sula is ready to interchange with Izak over the course of next season's 60-plus games that we'll play. I love Willis Sula.
00:13:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Eddie might be grooming him to be right winger maybe it's Murphy's replacement in a year or two uh not sure um but yeah without paying that money for a goalkeeper it comes back into the pot uh maybe our eyes been a bit opened as to what prices we're being charged or asked to pay for a centre-back a centre-back is also an essential purchase more essential than a goalkeeper i think with um fenn bachman
00:13:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
injury record and an aging Babshar and Dan Byrne and haven't seen for 16 months Jamal Lascelles as our four main centre-halves I wouldn't be at all surprised given unlimited funds if we didn't want two centre-halves to come in there and so maybe maybe we digging our heels in on this traffic deal because We actually don't want to buy a goalkeeper until next year. And if we wait till next year, however good fact it is, we think Burnley will be relegated.
00:14:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
So there should be a deal to do with the money that we want to pay next year.
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
is a bit of a chance. What if he's brilliant? What if Kyle Walker marshals the Burnley defence to be as good as they were in the championship last year? And they are able to draw their way to...
00:14:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
17th place or higher finish and they don't get relegated. I think Trafford will have played well and his price will be even higher. So maybe that's risky or maybe we don't need a goalkeeper or maybe we think there might be a different goalkeeper to go and get next year.
00:14:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not sure. hasn't finished. There's a big gap in the two valuations. We don't look like they're going to go any higher. Burnley don't look like they want to drop any lower. That might not work. That might not happen, which would be amazing given that that was the one we thought was done.
00:15:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
before the transfer window started. Anyway, watch this space on that and we shall see. and Another deal which looked as if it was done, which hasn't completed yet, and was an outgoing.
00:15:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thorne Longstaff, if I can say his name correctly, and I can. Thorne Longstaff was reported to have said, to almost have insisted on being sold.
00:15:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's got a year left on his contract, um He doesn't get a lot of first team action. I know Eddie values him as a member of the squad and he is important in being homegrown in terms of how many people we can put into the squad for the Champions League.
00:15:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
But if he goes through to his end of his contract next year, he leaves for nothing. If he's sold this year, and I think it's Sean Longstaff suggested that he is sold this year, we should be able to command a pure corporate fee.
00:16:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
The story was Leeds were interested and Leeds have offered 10 million plus 2 million add-ons for Sean Longstaff. You'd like to think that Sean Longstaff was worth a little bit more than that, but to be fair, why?
00:16:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
He'd hardly played any first-seam football after Christmas. um He's shown himself to be a ah Solid Premier League defender, but not anything spectacular.
00:16:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Probably just the sort of midfielder that Leeds need, bopping things for them on their attempts to stay in the Premier League next year. So good but could move for Leeds, good move for us.
00:16:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
10 million plus possibly two for our PSR calculations, all pure profit because he's homegrown. ah and a good deal for Sean Longstaff because at 27 he doesn't want to be sitting on the bench he wants to be playing his football what's he got five or six years left um you don't want to do that as a bit tart player you want to be the main man somewhere he could get a five-year contract if he goes this year but apparently that 10 million plus two from Leeds is their third offering and we have not
00:17:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
accepted the first or the second offering. I think we haven't replied to this one yet as per the report. And if we reject this one, they're ready to walk away and we'll be ending up with Sean Longstaff.
00:17:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Which means we don't have to buy another replacement midfielder. I think we're one midfielder short because Elliot Anderson still needs to be replaced. But that would leave us with Sean Longstaff in the Champions League squad.
00:17:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I know he scored against PSG, but he was a regular first teamer then. um wasn't particularly impressed that he was at Champions League level by some of the cameos he put when we played in the last 10, 15 games of last season.
00:18:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he's where we can have an upgrade. um I think, to be fair, even Willock is somebody who we ought to be able to have an upgrade. if we're trying to build some depth and a squad that can challenge on all four fronts this next season.
00:18:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that hasn't happened. It seems like it's a good deal for Newcastle and Leeds and Sean Longstaff, but it still hasn't happened. So again, watch this play. ah
00:18:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're the two deals that we thought had happened that haven't happened yet. So we'll just have to wait and see what comes of it. I'm going to do the Zencaster advert

Potential Striker Signings

00:19:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Part three, new links. Now, um two days ago we were talking about Dominic Calvon-Lewin being chatted up as a free agent and coming in as a backup striker and Michael and I, after discussion, decided we wouldn't be completely against it, although we weren't very inspired by it.
00:20:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the requirement for a second striker has really stepped up when Callum Wilson hasn't been offered any sort of new deal or one that could accept anyway.
00:20:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Watch this space for him going to lead two, because I think he would work really well there without having to move out. But today we have been linked with some very interesting strikers.
00:20:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Apparently are discussing making a move for Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa. and Jan Wisser from Brentford, both of which are A-class strikers, Premier League strikers, proven and informed. um Excellent injury records.
00:21:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah The question for me is whether they would see it ah coming to Newcastle as definitely playing second fiddle to Alex Evatt. and Maybe they would if that's what we told them they were going to do. But I think with 60 games next year, you know, they could start 30 of them if you sell the opportunity to them correctly.
00:21:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think the Ollie Watkins deal, if there was one, would be a difficult one to sell. Firstly, he is, you know, one of the current England ones.
00:21:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um was the main man at Villa, got his nose cut out of joint a little bit when ah John Duran broke through and Emery started picking him. Duran got sold, which made him main man again, except they then brought in Rashford and Asensio, which kind of meant he had to share his minutes around.
00:22:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that's possibly why he stayed fit the whole season. and It's not a bad thing to have to share the minutes around when you've got quality players to come in. and Does he play centre-forward? He can do. We've seen him operate from the left-hand side.
00:22:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, wondering if he could be in in the team to give Gordon a rest as well as Izak at centre-forward. Izak forward ezac can play on the left and he could have go at centre-forward. I think this there's definitely some versatility to sell to him so that he doesn't feel like he's playing second and fiddle to anybody.
00:22:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's a hard deal to do. I think Villa would be looking for... He's got three years left on his contract. I think Villa would be looking for 56, 60 million plus. um
00:22:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And for that reason, I think it would be quite tough one to do. Wisher, however, is probably a little bit more plausible because he's only got one year left on his contract.
00:23:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Kev, he would have told you,
00:23:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Always pick Whisher ahead of Mbwemo when it came to raiding Brentford for some forward players. Whisher can play on on the left as well, plays through the middle, plays down the right. um Again, really, really exciting addition to our forward line.
00:23:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I'm wondering where that leaves old Willis Sula, of course, who has also looked like ah an exciting addition. But... but
00:23:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
£15-20 million, pounds I reckon, because he's only got one year left on his contract. He's 27 as well. Would he want to come? and Is he going to play Champions League football by staying at Brentford? No, I would venture.
00:23:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
He might be interested in that. I think it would definitely be worth a cheeky beard for Johan Wister because he's man of the match performance against us at Brentford.
00:24:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And he scored the goal when we beat them up here in the Cup. So I quite like both of those. um But if we're going to push the boat out and get a top-class striker, I mean, I'm i'm dreaming, aren't I?
00:24:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
but We should have the budget if we need. And we've got players to sell if we need.
00:24:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why have Arsenal not signed Jokeres yet? They haven't. They've been there for two weeks. They've even decided on him instead of Tesco for the last 10 days, and he still hasn't signed. There's a bit of a a bit of a hiccup on the valuation between Sporting Lisbon and Arsenal. I think ah think with the add-ons, it's just short of 70 mil that they want for him.
00:24:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
What a statement that would be for the rest of the Premier League if Newcastle could pinch Sweden's other forwards and have the Swedish forward line playing for it. and

Defensive Targets and Transfer Strategies

00:25:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
the Zump Arsenal hijack their main deal for their main man.
00:25:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would love to be able to do that, but then I'm probably just dreaming. and
00:25:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a nice dream, though. It's a nice dream. the I think it's far more likely that we... yeah Oh, and somebody mentioned Eketike again, but I think he's going to cost him 90 million.
00:25:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, he couldn't come to us when we had for 22, 23 million. He went to PSG and sat on the bench for a year. So I can't see there being any mileage in Eka TK. He's probably going to end up at Liverpool, to be fair.
00:25:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we'll see. All of this is a exciting and lovely to follow.
00:25:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
um no news on our links to Scalavini. Apart from, I did hear that was all by from everybody. That's going to be a really hard deal to do.
00:26:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm thinking playing on one leg because he's had a
00:26:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
anterior cruciate ligament injury that he's got to try and get over. i don't think he's come back from that yet. So is he really a centre-half option for us? Maybe that was this paper talk and he looked good 18 months ago.
00:26:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Maybe it's a bit more than that. I don't know. We don't know. Anyway, also linked today or observed is probably the right thing today is that Liverpool have not yet made a move for Mark Gahey.
00:26:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we know how much Eddie likes Mark Gahey. He'd be cheaper this year than he was last year, because he's only got one year left on his contract. The question is whether we could persuade him to come north. and I've read various reports that he's only wanting to go to Liverpool.
00:26:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
But who's saying that? Who knows that? Is that not something his agent might put out to make Liverpool make a move? and Because he fancies Liverpool? who wouldn't fancy Liverpool, you'd probably guarantee the league champions medal next year.
00:27:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So, Gahey mentioned, so maybe, maybe, maybe that is a deal that we thought we were in for, we gave up on a long time ago, but we can go back and get it.
00:27:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's see, again, more interest. When you start thinking that Gahey might be back on, let's be real, Mbwemo hasn't signed Romantiz to United yet, although No, that's not being real. And Bwema said he wants to go.
00:27:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Man U have offered 62.5 and I think Brentford wants 65. That sounds like that's going to happen. Do you think? I'm not sure.
00:27:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
But do we need him when we've got Alanga? Well, Alanga plays on the left as well. So, you know, how are we going to fund all of this? Maybe this is where Liverpool buy Gordon.
00:27:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or is it Arsenal are going to buy Gordon? We don't want to sell Gordon. It's very confusing. It's interesting. um I've wasted the whole evening just reading about

Show Conclusion and Future Teasers

00:28:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Duh.
00:28:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because there's always something new coming out at this point. I love the transfer window when it's busy and when we've got some money to spend.
