Newcastle United travelled to Singapore off the back of a hammering from Celtic in their last pre-season game and without arguably the best striker in the Premier League in Alexander Isak.

They lost the game 3-2 but there were a number of positives for the Magpies, Michael gives his thoughts.

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the Daily Newcastle podcast for this immediate reaction as Arsenal have beaten Newcastle United 3-2 in Singapore in what was a thoroughly entertaining game.
00:00:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
For a friendly. If you're new the channel, my name is Michael Grimesall and this episode will be going out on Sunday evening instead of your regularly scheduled Monday episode. and The reason for that is we are looking to try some new content out. So hopefully we'll be able to do more of these almost immediate reaction pieces.
00:00:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Let us know if you enjoy that, because then we can go and do it even more in the future. And well, that's just because we know you like it. Simple as that. If the more you like, the more we do.
00:00:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's pretty much it. But going into the game, ah we saw Newcastle. um We saw a very different side of Newcastle ah than what we saw against Celtic. um We saw two different 11s and 45 to each team, which we knew would happen. That's similar to what we saw at Celtic. But Alex Murphy was at left back.
00:01:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Jamal Lascelles was in from the start as well. So that was a little bit of a surprise. um It almost emphasised the need for new bodies and at Newcastle. um But it does have to be said, neither player did to themselves any harm.
00:01:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
if that makes sense today, um despite not having the best games. I'll start at the beginning. um I thought for the opening five minutes of the game, ah before the goal, I thought we were a tad sluggish.
00:01:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Arsenal's press is fantastic, um particularly when they've got Havertz up top. I think his work rate is so underrated, and what Jokeres does when he comes in might make them, it might break them, if he can match that work rate, but still bring more goals.
00:01:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, but we don't care about that. ah Um, but I thought the, I mentioned that because I thought we matched their work ethic, but where we didn't match them was for quality.
00:02:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, there was a lot of loose passes early on. Um, but you know, the moment where we actually managed to get through to gnarly gets on the ball, uh, beat his man, delightful little turn, um about 35 yards out, uh, away from our goal.
00:02:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, We immediately beat the press. there's a few little intricate passes in midfield. It ends up with Tonali on the right wing. ah He cuts it back to Alanga, whose shot goes sort down into into the floor, hits off the post and goes in.
00:02:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I'll be honest, it's not the greatest finish. It's not the cleanest finish. But as long as they go in, who cares? He can score 10 of those a season and I'll be a very, very happy man.
00:02:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So it has to be said as well with the goal. Willie Mossula taking two of the Arsenal defenders towards the front post, leaving that gap, so to say, for Alanga in the centre.
00:03:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Very impressive. The youngster did well there. Unfortunately, didn't do too much more after that, but that was very good from Asula. And it does have to be said, with his work rate and mentality, it is really impressive. And if you can get his finishing and and his ability to match, you'll have a ah manager's dream there.
00:03:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
then he could have a very good future with Newcastle. But for now... There's still work to be done. um But following the goal, I thought we did okay. We struggled with the press. The work rate was fantastic at times.
00:03:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
think for the most part, I would actually say it was fantastic. A couple of moments by a couple of players that I wasn't particularly happy with, particularly with it being pre-season. You'd expect players to be, you know, not busting a gut,
00:03:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
But at least putting the effort out there to say, look, you want to pick me in the opening game of the Premier League season. And there was a couple of players I didn't see that from. But Eddie Howell will have seen it as well.
00:04:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Eddie Howell's opinion means a lot more than mine. um But yeah, I thought we were okay. But the player in particular who i was really impressed with his work ethic was Anthony Gordon. ah less impressed with how he was on the ball.
00:04:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But, you know, he's not the greatest winger in the world. He's a very good winger, but sometimes against top defences, sometimes wingers have bad games. It happens.
00:04:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But he helped out Dan Byrne and young Alex Murphy a lot during that first half. And it was one of the reasons why Bakayo Saka didn't have... the best game but still had a very solid game um we had a few efforts through bruno tonali willick nearly gets on the end of the the tonali effort which if he can get any contact on it whatsoever well he either stops the ball in its tracks or ah you know it likely goes in uh because rye had already started moving um towards the footwell towards the far post where Tonali's shot was going.
00:05:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But realistically, it didn't take too long for Arsenal to turn the game over. It started with a goal from Newcastle old boy, Mikel Moreno. Yeah. yeah Great player.
00:05:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Was gutted when we lost him. Even more gutted when he went to Arsenal. A few years later, Willick loses the ball, recovers, and then tries to do a little one-two with Bruno.
00:05:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Unfortunately, neither of them control the ball particularly well. Arsenal, ah you know, while Marino himself gets the ball back. It gets up to Kai Havert who controls it, I have to say, quite brilliantly, backheels it into the path of Mourinho who delicately places the ball in the bottom corner. ah And we'll probably have to get used to that type quality because we are in the Champions League again this season.
00:05:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we're in the Conference League or the Europa League, you're probably not going to come up against that those kind of goals too often. um But i'd I'd probably expect to see a very similar goal against Champions League opposition next season So hopefully we've learned from it in preseason and we'll all be looking back and going, wow, thank God we had that game.
00:06:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, as we tend to, sometimes we do capitulate um ah soft free kick. It does have to be said on the the right hand side. um Given to Arsenal, three players end up on the deck. Two Arsenal, one Newcastle.
00:06:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Decision's obviously not given our way. Trippier's caught a little bit off guard, although it's harsh to single him out because every player did. ah The ball ends up towards crossed in towards the back post. It's a brilliant cross.
00:06:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Alex Murphy blasts into the back of his own net. um I do feel like from the position Murphy was in, An experienced head probably just knocks it away from goal.
00:06:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just gentle tap. Unfortunately, he's got Bakayo Saka behind him. He's tried to blast it out of play and he's he's ended up putting an absolute thunderbolt in the back of his own net. I'll give him credit.
00:07:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's ah It's an excellent finish. And if he doesn't do anything, Bakayo Saka scores. So he was right to try and do something. think the execution... maybe just showed his inexperience a little bit but he didn't he didn't have a bad game the og is obviously going to make it look worse than what it was um yeah that was pretty much it for the first half not a lot happened elsewhere uh second half we make nine changes yes nick pope and asula stayed on that was it um and it was only actually about the 47th 48th minute i realized how bad the pitch was
00:07:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
because Barnes has a chance to to break early and the ball, you just see it just bubble, bubble, bubble, bubble. bubble um And if you're on Spotify, that probably sounded her horrendous.
00:07:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it was up and down horrific amounts. And there's no ah doubt that impact is Arsenal as well. And I just didn't notice it earlier. But yeah, Bourne's trying to break. And it was arguably the slowest break in the world because of because of the pitch.
00:08:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Arsenal have been training on it. I read after the game. They've been training on that pitch. So it wasn't exactly in pristine condition. um But at the same time, we're going to come across pitches like that in the Champions League.
00:08:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
We need to be able to adapt. um And on the day, Arsenal seem to do it a bit better than what we did. um But yeah, it's it's unfortunate. At the end of that, um some particular scenario, Barnes tried to cut it back. Osula moved forward.
00:08:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And yeah, they just weren't really on the same wavelength, which I have noticed a bit. It does tend to happen between those two more than anyone else. Barnes and Asula don't really seem to have, hate to say chemistry, because it just makes it sound like I'm talking FIFA. um But yeah, they don't really seem to have that particular chemistry.
00:08:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But once they play with each other a lot more, if they get on the same wavelength, it could be very dangerous. Because I feel like there was a couple of times against Everton, we saw the same thing. um But yeah, then perhaps the moment of the game, which...
00:09:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
will have the most say on what happens next season because Arsenal hold on to the ball on a throw-in for a little too long.
00:09:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Let's be honest, my Newcastle fans, we know quite a bit about new Arsenal's time-wasting, but less said about that better. Basically, Arsenal hold on to it for a bit too long um and the referee actually gives the turnover of possession, gives Newcastle the throw.
00:09:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
If that's consistent in the Premier League next season, I'll like it, but I would have hated it two years ago when we were absolutely incredible with the dark arts. But yeah, less less said about that now, the better.
00:09:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
But if that's the same on the first day of the season and the last day of the season, and everywhere in between, I'll actually be pretty happy because I think that's a good change.
00:10:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Then Arsenal, what was next? Yeah, Arsenal should have led 3-1 next. um Pope, it's a bit of an odd pass to Joe Linton. We're trying to play it from the back.
00:10:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Joe Linton's not exactly the best player with a ball to feet, but it's not a great pass by Nick Pope either. Joe Linton loses the ball, um but the ball goes out wide to the left.
00:10:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It's crossed in. I can't remember who crosses it in. It might have been Calafiore. um And it's a great, great overhead kick by Saka. Very powerful.
00:10:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Nick Pope saves very well. So he's forgiven for that particular moment. But yeah, bit of a dodgy pass again from Nick Pope. ah And then, well, we score almost immediately afterwards with Miley and Tino Livramento creating a bit of space on the right-hand side.
00:11:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And then the the ball goes out to Jacob Murphy. um He cuts inside, takes a couple of touches and just... buries it into the bottom corner from distance.
00:11:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It's a brilliant, low, powerful drive, and it's kind of what we've come to expect from Jacob Murphy. It was an absolutely excellent finish. um But what I noticed most for that particular moment was when Jacob good Murphy's celebrating, when the team are celebrating, Eddie Howe's having a go at someone, ah and he's saying...
00:11:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
effing pass it forward um he seemed really really annoyed with a certain player for just not being not passing the ball forward i'm not sure who it was um the camera didn't pan uh to the player afterwards maybe someone noticed um but i i didn't if he did let me know because i haven't got a clue uh i tried to find out after the game as well but uh anyone i asked hadn't noticed it um but yeah the The moment that changes the game is the substitution to bring Arsenal's ah Max Dallman on.
00:12:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
he' I'd heard a lot about him, particularly from the friendly against AC Milan where Arsenal fans were saying he's the best thing since sliced bread, um which is mental because Ethan Nanieri and Miles Lewis-Skelly were apparently that as well, um and every other youngster they've ever had.
00:12:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, this one actually looks like he's been playing at the top level for years. I know he just had a cameo today. Yeah. Yeah, he had two great runs and the efforts were eventually saved by, think it was Nick Pope for the first and then I think it was John Ruddy for the second.
00:12:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then obviously for the penalty, he had Matt Target on toast. um Just swift movement of the ball. It's... It's very early to say, and I'm not saying he'll be as good as Lionel Messi in the future.
00:12:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
He could be nowhere near, but just that quick burst of pace, that movement. I remember seeing that from Messi when I was growing up. in I was about 10 to 12 years old and thinking, wow that's incredible so it reminded me a bit of that um obviously he's brought down by joe linton for the penalty it's he's made a meal of it let's be honest but i think every 15 year old in world football will do that they're trained to do that these days um so it's not great and then the penalty is converted by martin odegaard um
00:13:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
who actually probably had one of his best games against us after coming on. um Yeah, he looked pretty good today. And I think the only time I remember him having a good game against us was at 2-0 at St. James' Park a couple of years back. So...
00:13:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, very good on the Arsenal side. On the Newcastle side, we had some decent chances. um Matt Target and Livermanto put in some good crosses. Unfortunately, they found nobody.
00:13:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But if you you know you had someone on the end of it, you've got two great chances right there. Unfortunately, Osula did have his one big chance of the game.
00:14:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah It's a brilliant cross from Jacob Murphy on the right-hand side. ah Just a long ball over the top. Perfect run from Murphy. Perfect run from Osula. ah The cross is really good as well. Osula's just really lucky unlucky with a powerful header that just goes wide of the post. or I think the keeper probably had it covered.
00:14:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And then, yeah, the last thing for Newcastle was Sven Botman. i Went off with a tweak to the groin after about 25 minutes into the second half. He only played 25 minutes and the game came on at half-time.
00:14:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And ultimately, we lost the game three two um But it's it was a lot better than the game against Salt Lake. I mean, i think we all expected that. um But with the news that you know Alex Izak's apparently looking to leave,
00:14:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
We got battered off Celtic. um Sunderland getting battered off Hearts. If you haven't seen, that's brilliant. It's good that the weekend's starting see, you know, we're starting to see a few positives for Newcastle because it's it's been a tough week.
00:15:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
But in the second part, I'm going to go to a little advert now. um And then I'll go into player ratings, the first half and the second half. And then I'll let you know what's coming up next week. So for now, here's a little word from Bionique.
00:15:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
cracking stuff and we really should get a video for that because for those watching on youtube you do just look at me either having a drink and then sitting there awkwardly for 20 seconds um but thank you very much by anik for sponsoring the episode um and for player ratings i'm going to start with the the first half 11 then i'll go into the second half 11 um just because that seems to make the most sense um So we'll start at back, ah which means we'll start with Nick Pope.
00:16:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to give him, and I do apologize if these don't make sense. I'm doing these literally off the top of my head. I wrote down a couple of notes, but i'm just the the number that comes is purely from the the heart and the head.
00:16:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So Nick Pope, I'm going to give him a 6.5.
00:16:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I don't think he could do anything with either of the goals. He made three or four decent saves and then a couple that were you know pretty standard. um But I can't give him anything more than that really because his passing was a large reason why.
00:16:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think we could get our game plan off the ground in that first half. um I remember a couple of times where i tried to pass it out wide to Alex Murphy or Kieran Trippier, and they were just really poor passes, and they put us under pressure immediately. So, yeah, pub, 6.5.
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Goalkeeping was good, but distribution, not quite. And, well, distribution is now a massive part of the game. Trippier. I think Kieran Trippier is probably a seven for me.
00:17:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Said he was caught out slightly for the second goal. I think every play I was ah by that quick free kick. um But for the most part in that first half, He kept Leandro Trossard really quiet, and there was a few moments where really good defensive work led to a couple of dangerous turnovers and counterattacks for Newcastle.
00:17:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, I think Trippier was probably one of the better players. um Tempted to give him a 7.5, actually, saying that, but I'll stick with the 7. um And then we've got Lascelles and Dan Byrne, who were the two centre-backs.
00:18:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think Lascelles had a better that game than Dan Byrne. um But the reason why is because Byrne was forced to be the outlet at the back.
00:18:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah um Every time we tried to pass forward, it was through Dan Byrne in that first half. And that's not the kind of defender he is. He's not the outlet. He's the stopper. He's the the giant in the middle who you can put 700 crosses in.
00:18:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
in In 699, he's just going head away. So, yeah, I've given Bern six. Yeah, I'm going to give Dan Bern a six um because of that.
00:18:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um A lot of his passes while finding the mark, I thought there were... ah remember a couple with Tonali where he just found them really difficult to control and led to a full few turnovers of the ball.
00:18:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Lascelles, I don't remember him on the ball too much, but he's really not the defender you want when you're playing out from the back. um But it was good to see him back.
00:19:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's very solid centre-half. I think you know he's he's the Steve Bruce era of Dan Byrne for us. It's good have him back. Captain Fantastic.
00:19:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave, but it's it's it's always good to see him putting in a solid performance at the back. um And then left-back was obviously Alex Murphy.
00:19:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've given him five point do i give him a fight yeah i'm going to give him a 5.5. um because i'm Simply because I'm going to hold him to the same standards I'm holding the rest of the team.
00:19:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
It wasn't a great performance. um I thought when he had the help from Byrne and Gordon against Saka... He did okay. He did well. um But at the same time, there were still quite a few times where Saka got the better of him.
00:19:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then either Gordon or Byrne had to help out. um ah For a young lad in preseason, it was a decent performance. But for a if I'm putting him against first-team players in that standard, it it wasn't great.
00:20:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But against Bakayo Saka, pre-season promising start for Alex Murphy. And I still don't think he's at the level we need him to be just yet. um But I definitely think there's championship level defender in there right now.
00:20:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's, you know, um when we were in the Champions League the first time, it's pretty much what we had in backup the whole time. So he could have a ah decent season with us this year if he's not loaned out.
00:20:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah The midfield three. So it would it was Joe Willick, Bruno Gamares and Sandro Tonali. I'll start with the bottom for me. um I'll give them a 6, 6.5 and a 7. Willick is the 6. I thought he was largely and anonymous.
00:20:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I also noticed he was visibly frustrated a lot of the time just as passes weren't going the way ah he wanted to. There a moment in my head, which I was really annoyed at during the game,
00:21:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's annoying because it's stuck in my head. um But there's a turnover. Arsenal get the ball beyond him. And then easily literally he literally just turns around and throws a little bit of a strop.
00:21:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's literally for a second. But it's just because that's stuck in my head, really didn't like it. A few players probably did do it did it as well. But just that one, I i remember seeing it stuck in my head with Arsenal, particularly in a dangerous attack at the time.
00:21:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, not it's a shame because I really like Joe Willock, but it just seems like it's not working out for him. Bruno is the 6.5. ah pe Passing was probably the the best of a bad bunch, as you'd probably expect with him and Sonali ah being two of the best. and He seems a little off the pace.
00:21:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Obviously, it's preseason, so that he obviously will be. But just in comparison to his usual self, you couldn't faulties were great, but he'll be largely disappointed with that, I think.
00:22:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
You'll know that he could have done a bit better. um But still, I actually thought he had to put it in an okay performance. And then Sandra Tonali was the seven, I think, without him. We really struggled to get out of one half in that first half.
00:22:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah He was the best carrier of the ball by current remile, and he played really quite well. Defensive work probably wasn't as good as usual, but that Arsenal team's full of attack and talent. You can't be expected to have a great game every time.
00:22:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then our front three was, let's see, the two Antoneys and Willie Masula. ah So Anthony Gordon... I'm going to be a bit harsh and I'm going to give him 5.5.
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
His work rate was excellent, which is a weird thing to say is straight after giving someone a 5.5. He helped us out a lot defensively, but on the ball, he really lacked ideas. and Maybe it was because he didn't have much support, but I felt like a lot of the time on that left-hand side, he was just giving the ball away and really struggling to impact the game offensively.
00:23:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And if I'm rating wingers based on their defensive contribution, I was probably giving Miggy Elmer on 10 out of 10s most week back in the day. ah So offensively is the reason Gordon's a 5.5. If I was doing it just on his defensive contributions, yeah, you would have been a ah high number. But against Arsenal, we've seen Gordon do really well in the past. And that effect attacking outlet, what's won us games against Arsenal in the past.
00:23:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
We just didn't see that today. But it's pre-season. So as long as he does it in the league, I couldn't care less. um Then the other Anthony, Alanga, first start.
00:23:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
And for me, I'm going to give him a seven. He did get the goal. I want to say it's a well-taken goal. It's not. um But, ah you know, it's ah it's a chance he has to finish. And we've seen plenty of players...
00:24:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, Izak included, ah sky those kinds of chances over the bar. So it's, and I'm saying that's with the idea that alex Alexander Izak's arguably the best finisher we've had at the club in years.
00:24:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, so it's high regards. I'm not saying Izak's terrible now. I haven't, I'm not going to be one of those fans that completely turns his head. Um, but yeah, it was a tough, it was a tough, um,
00:24:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
was a tough chance for Alanga. ah He took it well. Fair play. ah He looks energetic. He was probably on main outlet in the first half, um but on the ball...
00:24:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
You can just tell when a player hasn't quite clicked yet with his teammates. There's a few passes that were just slightly over-hit that maybe a Callum Hudson-Odoi or um i'm trying to think Morgan Gibbs-White as the number 10 would have typically got on to. But um you know we're playing it to players who are just a little bit slower and they just didn't get there.
00:25:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Good early impressions, though. I'm really excited to see what Anthony Alanga can do this season. And then Osula.
00:25:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
He might be the next Shola. um And I mean that as in he's going to be a cult hero that everyone likes, but he's just not going to be good enough. um I've given him a six. Maybe it's harsh.
00:25:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's pressing and he's harrying was a great asset for us during the game. um But when he gets the ball, I really don't see enough from him. um It's a tough game to judge him on.
00:25:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah because Arsenal, you know it was ah he was against Saliba and Gabriel. um But with Isaac set to leave, we need players to step up. ah and that To be honest, I probably would have given him 6.5 if that header ah from the Murphy cross was just on target.

But with it going wide, it was still an excellent header. But if it's on target, at least you're forcing something of the goalkeeper. ah Probably wouldn't have given him a 6.5 for it being straight at the keeper.
00:26:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
But even anywhere towards the corner, as you're sitting and going, look, at least there's a chance of it going in. Goes wide. There's no chance of it going in at all. um So we're second half, 11. um I'll start with Rudy, even though he came on ah midway through the second half.
00:26:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I'll just give him a six because I don't think he was really on for long enough. He made a good save to deny Saka and Darwin, actually. um Couldn't do anything about the penalty, but yeah, it's one of those...
00:26:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wasn't really on for that long. Could have given him 6.5 easily. um Yeah. Nice to see him in Newcastle shirt. Tino, I've given a 6.5. I think, to be honest, I can't think of anything he really did wrong.
00:26:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think he was solid, but potentially unremarkable. um Had a good game. 6.5 summed up, really, there. um Much better than average, but nothing really that special.
00:27:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Bottman, I'm going to give a six again. He was only on the pitch for 25 minutes. Didn't really do all that much. um Was relatively solid. remember there was one moment where um he can't get the ball out of his feet quick enough and it goes out for a corner.
00:27:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, hopefully his injury isn't too bad um and we'll see him. Well, maybe not against the K League 11, but in the games against Espanyol, etc.
00:27:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then I guess I'll go to who came on for Sven Bartman, which was Harrison Ashby, who I honestly never expected to see in a Newcastle shirt ever again.
00:27:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But i've actually given him a seven. um I think he was really quite impressive. He came on. Genuinely don't remember him losing a duel.
00:28:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah think he helped carry the ball out excellently in that second half. He had a good chance at the end of the game as well. ah really If that went in, it would have he probably would have been more man of the match for me.
00:28:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It's a shame I went straight to the goalkeeper, but defensively I thought he was really good. um And yeah, solid performance for Ashby. be actually i didn't have much hope for at all at the start pre-season i expect him to go out on loan and then via eventually leave on a free he still could but if you know if you're a young player want to push through it's kind of performance you need to get more minutes um and then uh talking about the kind of performance you need ah um i'll go to the kind of performance you don't need
00:28:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that was Matt Target. um He was solid until Max Dowman came on. um Yeah, Dowman had a great game against Target.
00:28:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
um but If a 15-year-old has you on toast at every opportunity, like I think the way Dowman takes him on for the penalty, he's probably going to have nightmares about that tonight. um So, yeah, I've got to give him a...
00:29:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've got to give him a 5.5 because he was solid for a large part of the half. It was just when that young lad came on that he really struggled.
00:29:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
So 5.5. um And then Joey Miley. Yeah. Were they the only two in midfield? I guess Sean Neve as well when he replaced Asula.
00:29:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's more of a striker, to be fair. But yeah, Joel Linton and Miley. I'm going to give Joel Linton a 6. say It was a really stupid penalty to give away.
00:29:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But he does it he does stupid fouls every single game. We know what to expect it. um There's a lot of times where it works quite well in breaking up the play.
00:30:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I do think when he brings the ball out, he is you know quite good just with that power and pace. um But yeah, it was a few stupid fouls, about 15 seconds after Downman comes on, he leaves his hand out and catches him in the face. um I'm a aware of, you know, you want to let him know you're there, but it was it was a struggle to to watch him with him. He wasn't at his best, Joel Linton, but...
00:30:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll probably see him have, for every bad game he has, he has a a great game. So I look forward to seeing him dominate against the K League XI. Miley was better. Miley was much better than Joe Linton for me today, which is insane because if you're as slow as Lewis Miley is, you need to be strong.
00:30:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
but he's not necessarily strong in the tackle at all. um And his duels aren't, he's not great in the duel, but on the ball, he is a very good talent. And can see him having a really good future.
00:31:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I don't think he's as good as what everyone made him out of be straight at that Champions League, first Champions League season. But there's definitely a good player there, and he's probably our brightest prospect.
00:31:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd actually say he's better than what Anderson was at this point. obviously we sold Anderson for 35 million. So let's see how Miley goes. um But yeah. I think he put in a good performance.
00:31:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
He does have the quality, make the difference. And I think he played well and didn't give himself... but He didn't do himself any harm today. And I think and again against a good Arsenal side, put in a decent performance.
00:31:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a 6.5. ah For the two wingers that came on, I'm not going to go for Sean Neve because I don't think he was on for long enough. I might it be wrong and maybe it was above 20 minutes, but and don't remember him touching the ball that much really.
00:31:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So for the two wingers ah to finish off, you can't really have two more contrasting performances, can you? um Harvey Barnes came on and didn't really do anything.
00:32:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was very similar to Gordon of where his defensive work was decent, but it wasn't as good as Gordon's. And then offensively, I'd say he was slightly better than Gordon, but again, every time he got the ball, he did a nice little run, but it ended up pretty much going to no one, if I remember correctly, every single time. So I've got to say Harvey Barnes is ah I'm going to say 5.5, same as Gordon. I wanted to kind of go 5 just because there wasn't that defensive work to back it up.
00:32:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I generally think if Matt Target was ah given the help that Alex Murphy was, then maybe Max Downman wouldn't have had the the field day that he had coming off the bench. Um, yeah, he didn't cause the Arsenal defense any trouble whatsoever, really did Barnes.
00:32:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Uh, and then for Murphy, it's probably going to give him a 7.5. Uh, he's quality on the ball, shone through number of good crosses. And of course, uh, he scored the goal, um, which is a brilliant finish.
00:33:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, Alanga might be coming for Jacob Murphy's spot, but Murphy isn't going to let it go that easily. um And I thought he had a really good game. ah Just a striker away, really, um from you know two decent lineups.
00:33:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
You want maybe replacements in there for Matt Target, Ashby, Osula, LaSalle's. and Lewis Hall would obviously play instead of Murphy.
00:33:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, I think we're a few players away from having a really good squad for the Champions League. um The young lads showed that, you know, maybe in the environment they could do okay.
00:33:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do think, obviously, it's going to be a big step up Champions League. ah You know, this is just a friendly in Singapore at the end of the day, but they did put the right attitude out there and, you know, they've looked okay.
00:34:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Barnes has been a bit of a worry. um Obviously, it didn't look great against Celtic, and it didn't look great today. i did say I thought we'd have a ah good preseason. So, times are running out on that front.
00:34:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But, yeah, that is pretty much it ah from me today on the Daily Newcastle podcast. um This has been the reviews. If you like them on a Sunday instead of a Monday, let us know. i might even split it in two because it's 35 minutes. Put 17 first part out on Sunday, second part out on Monday, but we'll see how it goes.
00:34:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, that's all from me today. We'll see you on Tuesday, definitely, as Nicola, myself, and Ian will dissect the positive and the negatives.
00:34:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah from this game and lead up to our match versus the K League 11. Let's let's go
