On today’s episode, Kieran digests Sunday’s performance against Manchester City. Not much quality, but the quality of Amad is clear.

Manchester Derby Highlights

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everyone, welcome back to the Daily Manchester United. It's Kieran here, it's just me today. But I get to look at the game, the Manchester Derby, which we come away with all three points. We left it late, we showed up after an hour.
00:00:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
and my goodness didn't we make it look really really good that last 30 minutes it was always going to be a game where we had to dig in and really make it you know a tough game and it honestly in a game that lacked quality from both sides i think the last half an hour from a Manchester United standpoint was a lot better than what we've seen in the first 60 so let's have an unpack and unwind and find that these three points against Manchester City still leave us in 13th place but we're now I believe six points away from Nottingham Forest in fourth place which is not a season not a sentence I thought I'd say this season
00:01:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
But here we are. The words are coming out of my mouth. Yes, 2-1 win against Manchester City with Guevario coming up with a header there, which sort of deflected off of Diallo as the ball came in. And it's one of those that it gets a deflection on it and then changes the trajectory, catches out the defence, it doesn't catch out Guevario.
00:01:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
leaps higher than the rest, not really that marked, gets a header into the back of the net. And I didn't think, you know, I don't think we played badly up at at that point. I just think we we were very much building the trench. We were very much entrenched to try and keep City out. We were keen to try the counter whenever possible. And, you know, it had that feeling about it that you just thought it's going to be one of those games. This is going to be a long, long 90 minutes.
00:01:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, you know we you know, we got there to the end of the first half. I mean, there's there's quite a few talking points from a game that didn't really have many quality chances.

Controversial Moments Discussion

00:02:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, can we change the the bringing dis the sport into a distribute card? check Change that to a red card, because that was pretty embarrassing for car walker, wasn't it? I mean, pretty pretty weird behavior. You know, you you want to get your man sent off, but There's better ways to do it than that. The Dark Arts, absolutely not mastered there. And he's ended up with Egg on his face because not only is he now being ridiculed on yeah by by Roy Keane himself, he also comes away with a loss. Make of that what you will. um couple ah A penalty shout as well, where um you know we had one felled in the box, Heuland brought down in the box.
00:02:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just I don't think it's I think you've seen them given it's one of those penalties you've seen them given I just thought at the time maybe it was not a penalty and you're sort of thinking at that point yeah it's but to be one of those games again. But we did get a penalty in the end, um but that's more for the

First Half Tactics and Mount's Injury

00:03:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
second half. We're still going to remain in the first half as as much as possible. It just seemed like, again, we were making sure that City didn't get many chances. I mean, they they were creating decent chances. I wouldn't say they were massive openings, but certainly we were happy to let City have the ball.
00:03:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
We were very happy for them to have the possession. We were very happy to try and get them on the break and look to try and you know use that counter to to its full effect. I mean, just having looked back at or just trying to remind myself of what happened, it was, it was you know,
00:03:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
We didn't actually register a shot on target in the first half. That's not great. And you know it it was it wasn't the best game. like Let's be honest here, it was not the best game. But who cares? We got three points. So I don't i don't really care about that. It was a corner, a game that we've conceded from. Not from directly the corner, but a corner routine that we've conceded from again.
00:04:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
De Bruyne are taking the corner playing it short to Gundogan who played it back to De Bruyne. De Bruyne then crosses the ball in but Ahmad gets a deflection on it trying to you know put it out for a corner or at least get in the way of it and unfortunately it just loops over and Vardio is able to track the ball really effectively and get the ball into the back of the net. It's a good header he's not really that marked so in essence it was a free header and he was able to well get city up ahead.

Squad Selection and Training Discipline

00:04:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah, I we got into half time and I just sort of thought
00:04:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I didn't think Chris Wood was on the pitch, so no one can not crucify me for that one. But it it wasn't looking great. And this is this this stems from the fact that Amurim did not select Rashford Arganaccio, and he was talking to Sky Sports after the game. And it wasn't a case of yeah illnesses or injuries, it was a case of he's deciding who is training the best.
00:05:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
which is exactly what you want from a manager. no we We have said at time and time again, you cannot have favourites when you're a manager, unless you're Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, where you're going to be the talisman of any team. But generally speaking, you can't really have a favourite. You can't guarantee someone who is starting that's not playing well.
00:05:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
and this is this is what's starting to happen now which is good um you know we sort of made it into that three four two one that we're now more seeing we thought it was going to be more of a three four three it's developing into the two attacking midfielders as well and mason mount having to be subbed off within 20 minutes with an injury not great not great you know and i i feel sorry for the likes of base and mount because He was absolutely devastated to come off the pitch and he was getting all of the, you know, the handshakes and whatnot from all of the United players. And that must really suck to be injury prone. And, you know, you you can't get a consistent run of form. You can't get the motor running because you're injured time and time again. But such is the way, such is the game

Second Half Resurgence

00:06:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
of football that sometimes you're having to think now, is it worth holding onto Mason Mount? Or do we try to look and move him on?
00:06:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's a difficult conversation to have. That's why I'm not Amroom. That's why I'm just speaking into a microphone about this rather than actually making the decision myself. It's much easier when you're this side of the microphone. and More fun too. But yeah, it's it's one of those. I just think the injuries to Mason Mount you know they're they're getting more and more. And we'll see what the physios and and the medical teams have to say and see what they can come up with, see what their assessment is and how long Mason might be out for. But it's it's not a great start for Mason. you know He was getting back into the rhythm, getting back into the flow of of playing football again, and he's going to be out for some time. So we'll wait and see what that assessment is going to be. We'll wait and see how long he's going to be out.
00:07:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, the first half let left a lot to be desired, would put it lightly for sure. I thought the back three was working okay. you know It was good to see Maguire in there. um you know he's He's caused a bit of division here at the Daily Manchester United. He might have caused a little bit of division for you as well.
00:07:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I thought he had a decent game. um you know Coming back into the lineup, it was it was a quiet game because there weren't a huge amount of chances. There were 20 chances, I think, over the entire game for both teams. So not a lot to talk about. Ten apiece and will we come away with the victory. But yeah, we'll talk more about the second half because that's really where it all started getting very, very interesting. And we'll talk about that after this.

Now, the second half is where it got interesting. Very, very interesting indeed. Yeah, we we made a couple of substitutions. We brought on the likes of Xerxes, Leni Yoro. We brought on Anthony as well in the 78th minute. We also brought on, I should say, Cobie Mayner was brought on instead of Mason Mount in place of Mason Mount for that injury.
00:09:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it started to actually click, if you like. After the hour mark, we've really started to play some really nice football. We were creating a lot of chances. It's it's almost as if we'd woken up. But the thing about City is, this season, they they cannot finish matches. So where Manchester United can't start matches effectively, this season, City

City's Finishing Struggles and Pep's Reflection

00:09:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
just can't finish them. They can't wrap them up.
00:09:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
and City were having a ah couple of chances and this you know they should be getting at least getting some in there and Arna having a ah good game for the most part I think you know keeping the shots out I mean he didn't have a lot to do I mean there's a header that you know he can't really save And I thought in the on the whole, he had a decent game. But again, it it came from mistakes from City that we took advantage from. You know, Diallo absolutely getting wiped out there. But if you look at him, you look at the play, he was so intelligent on that. He's running into the box. He looks to cut it back. He has a look over his shoulder to see who's coming. And he sees a City defender charging down on him.
00:10:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he knows, I've just got to get my body in the way. um I'm going to be taken out here. Does exactly that. Gets taken out, wins the penalty. Just a great bit of play from Diar. So intelligent. it's ah so He's been our best player this season. He's been phenomenal to watch a guy full of confidence and and making those split second decisions absolutely sublime.
00:10:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
one win When's the penalty? Bruno Fernandez steps up. Was there going to be any doubt? No, not really. Fernandez tucks it away, equalises, and then not two minutes later. 90th minute. This ball from Martinez, right over the top.
00:10:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
to get to Ahmad there. And it's it's a sublime pass from Martinez. It is. But Ahmad has a lot to do there. Takes it over Edison, and it's the angles tight. And he just just places it, finishes it lovely there. And is there a case of Gvadio maybe should be doing better there? It's all if he gets his feet tangled up and is not able to do anything with it. And it just trickles over the line. and I'll be honest with you, winners like that are just, dick they're great. Was it the greatest finish of the world? No, but I think because it wasn't the greatest finish of the world is the reason why it sort of trickled over the line. It's one of those bizarre ones.
00:11:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
But again, the sit the but the mistake, I think it was the penalty that, you know, the ball is lost in that midfield and it allows us to to pounce on it and and keep on going. It was Nunez's mistake. It's a really undersold pass that allows Anna to just get onto the end of it and do something with it. And that was it was, it was great. You know, it was really, really good. And then, of course, it's trying to shut up shop and make sure You know, nothing else can happen in that game, which I thought, you know, we did. It was it was good to see. And I just thought as well, there are a couple of players, a couple of city players, I should say that the quality is there. It really is. But for some reason, the the confidence isn't. And I've already said right now they're struggling to finish games. They're struggling to get their games tied up in that neat little bow like they have done the previous five or six years.
00:12:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's quite bizarre, but it keeps happening. It keeps happening. And and Pep in the media has said it's down to him. I

Rivalry Impact and Season Implications

00:12:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
know it's not the City Podcast. I understand that, but bear with me on this one. We've we've had a lot of Manchester against Pep. ah He's won 13 of them. <unk> the He's the City Manager that has won the most Manchester Darby's.
00:12:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I know that if you listen to the crossover over the weekend, ah Matt and Dan went on to the the City podcast there. I know they said it's not a Derby we consider highly ranked, but if we win it, somehow that makes it sweeter.
00:12:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
because it's it's much like how England has this big rivalry in football with Germany. And yet Germany, they consider the Netherlands to be the bigger rival. And I kind of feel it's that sort of scenario. Manchester United consider Liverpool to be the big rival. you know And Manchester City consider Man United to be the big rival because we're the noisy neighbours, okay? So you've won the league six times in a row.
00:13:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not six times in a row, but you know what I mean. Peps won it six times, and we haven't won it in in that time. um We got one when we went won the title back in 12-13, but since then, nothing. No Premier League titles against City. So it's fair to say that they have had the fair share of the success, but I just think that second half was great from a united point of view, and again, Ahmad, phenomenal.
00:13:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
gets the penalty, wins the penalty, and then tucks away the winner. Unbelievable, man. Unbelievable. This is Ahmad who's been out on loan last season, you know was considered a fringe player by you know not just Tenhag, but and the staff around him as well. I sort of thought that time, he is a fringe player. Now though, wow, I'm eating my words. Humble pie is right next to me and um'm like I'm having my fair share of it because he has been by far and away the best player for United this season and hands down yeah hands down he's been absolutely phenomenal and today again he's playing a higher role and he just seems to really excel at this higher role started out as that wingback role on the right or whether you call it the wide midfield where you're running up and down the pitch that's now been taken over by Maserau and I felt like in this city game it was more played like a five at the back rather than a three
00:14:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
felt like that Dallow and Maserati were able to have liberties going forward but Amarin was really focused on making sure that it was defense heavy because Ahmad's been great but the one thing he has been struggling with is the defense side and you would do if you if you have been an attacker for most of your career and you're asked to try and put an attack or get the timings right there you are going to struggle with that But I still think he's just been just a shining beacon this season. and Again, we get three points against City. We're now five points behind them. Somehow we're still 13th. This league has been mad this year. It's been absolutely mad. So again, all that all we can do is just try and put the results out there. Keep winning. That's the best wing we can do. that's That's what's in our control. The rest of the league isn't in our control.
00:15:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
But what is in our control is how we keep going, how we press on forward. um And yeah, just a nice feeling to come away with the City game. As we've all said, we've all mentioned, this is one that either side, if they won it, this would be this could be a turning point in the season. Let's hope I'm not eating my own words at that point as well.

Upcoming Matches and League Standings

00:15:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
let's Let's find out. Anyway, one more part to come. What lessons did we learn? And yeah, let's see if we have a lecture after this.

00:16:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's the most wonderful time of the year. Yes, we have four more matches coming up in December to round off the year in style. We have Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the League Cup quarterfinal. We then host Bournemouth on the 22nd of December. Boxing Day, we go to Wolverhampton to take on Wolves. And I'm sure a newly appointed manager at that point. And we round off the year on the 30th of December hosting Newcastle. Again, that's going to be a ah good match to round off the year.
00:17:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
in essence then it's a pretty well it's a pretty tough fixture list I'm not going to lie to you you know Tottenham have been as I record this they've absolutely battered Southampton 5-0 but you know we have been slaughtered by them this season earlier on you know very early in this season and the wounds are still sore from that one if you couldn't already tell it would be nice to get a little bit of indication against Spurs in the quarterfinal of the league cup And now that you've made it this far in the League Cup, you sort of think, well, we have to take this serious now, we have to take it more seriously. I still think it's one of those where Bayon Deer will start, but we'll get into more later on in the week about how we think things are going to be ah made up and go go from there.
00:17:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, you know, three league matches left, Bournemouth Wolves and Newcastle. And like I said before, the the table is all over the place. You know, Bournemouth is seventh, so, you know, above us. Newcastle are twelfth right now. Wolves are in the relegation zone. But again, they are going to have a new manager.
00:18:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And like I said in the previous part, what's most important right now at this stage is building consistency. And as we head to January with three league games to go and a league cup quarterfinal, what's important right now is getting the most out of the players right now.
00:18:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And looking forward, the words that Amorim have set has said about leaving out Garnaccio and leaving out Rashford, purely because they were not trading, you know, he phrased it very carefully, ah very carefully, because when the Sky Sports journalist pushed him on on the precise point of saying, well, are you saying that Rashford and Garnaccio didn't train well?
00:18:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Amorim was quick to say, no, I'm not saying that. What I am saying is they need to train like, you know, it's the same for everybody else. You have to train really well. And if they train really well, like the others, as well as the others, then they can win their place back in the side. And this this discipline is what we've been crying out for. We've been pleading for this sort of discipline. We've been pleading for a manager to come in and say, no, what what you're doing here is not good.
00:19:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
let's do it this way and you've got to earn your right to play for Manchester United you earn your right to play for the batch and that's that seems like what is happening right now and I think if if players don't like that then that's tough and the door's over there ah you you you're either part of this project or you're not and I think you know Reuben Namorim's coming he's let's not beat around the bush. It's been a difficult, it's been a topsy turvy, it's been a really difficult kind of opening to his stint. But the Manchester Derby win is a big plus. That's a big plus in that CV right now. And they're not easy games to end the year. They will be tough games. Bournemouth will provide all the challenge we could really want. Tottenham again, League Cup. Yeah, they've asked us before or out for a revenge.
00:20:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we've got wolves in the relegation zone and then new castle on the 30th so yeah that they're all going to be potential banana skins but i keep saying that you know banana skins to slip up on because we are we have been capable of slipping up It happens. There's a reason why we're 13th so far this season. But like we keep saying, the league is so topsy-turvy in itself. yeah We're now eight six points, I think, away. It might be a little bit more than that. But we're not too far away from the Europe spots, of which Nottingham Forest are fourth right now. They're on 28 points. United are on 22.
00:20:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Both teams have played the same amount of games. and We've got Arsenal on 30 points. They're currently in third place. So really, we're only six points away from top four, only eight points away from Arsenal at the moment.

Amorim's Management Style and United's Future

00:20:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're five points now away from City and they're fifth. But looking down the table, you've got Villa in sixth on 25, Bournemouth in seventh on 24, Fulham in eighth on 24, Brighton in ninth on 24.
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Tottenham in 10th on 23, Brentford in 11th on 23, Newcastle on 23, they're in 12th, leaves us in 13th on 22. I mean, it's remarkable. Three three teams on 23 points, three teams on 24, all of them above us right now. But this end of the season, we've got Bournemouth a chance to try and get some points against them, and Newcastle. Those are going to be huge fixtures. We could get ourselves back into the top 10, really.
00:21:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
come the end of the year. And I think that should be the target. You know, we should be getting back into that top half of the table and at least putting ourselves in that really good, really good seat for the rest of the season. And I have no idea what January's going to bring. I don't know what sort of players the Amrim is going to bring in. We'll wait for the rumor mill to fire up again. It's not long now. It'll be a couple of weeks. And then that rumor mill will be in full swing as we head towards January.
00:22:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's one of those where you have to decide, well, who doesn't want to play for United? Apparently that's the shorter list. But it's our job to try and sift through and see which ones, which rumours have got some weight behind them and which ones are just no. Normally when I decide the ones that I know, they're normally the ones that go through. Again, egg in my face pretty much in alignment for most cases, but that's why we're here. It's why we do it.
00:22:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, I think Ahmad, our shining beacon this season, he has been phenomenal. I think Hoyland as well. I thought he got some good chances. I just think I still have my faith in Hoyland because of course I do. He's he's been in good form recently. I hope he carries that on. Next up then will be the League Cup quarterfinal. I'm sure we'll have some good preview of that. We'll have well have some good revenge. Tottenham scored five today as I record this, which is Sunday night.
00:23:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
So let's hope we can put Fiverr past them. and That would be nice, wouldn't it? Let's see, though. Let's see. So that's ah that's all that's all to come. It's all to come. Thursday night, 19th of December, at eight o'clock will be the League Cup quarterfinal. It will be on Sky Sports main event and Sky Sports football. Take your pick.
00:23:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
and hopefully we get the result there to get ourselves into the semi-file. Hopefully you've enjoyed today's podcast. It's been more of a ramble, but I hope you've enjoyed it.
