Welcome and Match Aftermath

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everyone and welcome back to the Daily Manchester United Podcast. My name is Niall Hannigan and I'm joined by Kieran McGinley. Kieran, we're about half an hour after the finalist who went against Bournemouth.

Frustration with Performance

00:00:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're back now.
00:00:23
Kieran McGinley
It's a curse. Every time you say it, it's a curse. And just like your little detector in the background, I'm running out of batteries with this team. Running out of juice is it's getting exhausting. so Someone said it best in our little massive group chat at GSPN. There's something in the water at Manchester. You can't quite describe it.
00:00:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, normally when they say there's something in the water, it's normally kind of a positive thing, but ah yeah, or probably for every other podcast in the network, it's a positive thing. And yeah, excuse the the the fire alarm battery needs replacement.
00:00:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
so ah
00:00:58
Kieran McGinley
it's It's had enough with United as well, so it's fair enough.
00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, maybe it can it can kind of beep out some of the words we're going to be saying for this episode as well. But ah we'll just try and match that up with the timing.

Defensive Struggles

00:01:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But anyway, it's ah it's another cross. It's another header. It's a penalty. And it's an absolute capitulation at the end here and for the three goals. I mean, talk me through it. What's your thoughts?
00:01:17
Kieran McGinley
Well, I mean, corner, it's just same old, same old. I think that's, is that our eighth corner conceded now this season? Might be nine to be fair.
00:01:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Oh, no, it was a deep free kick.
00:01:26
Kieran McGinley
it might as well have been a corner let's face it you know we we just cannot defend set pieces at all um it's just what's the point what is the point i just i don't get it how can how can we be this bad uh defending set pieces it just doesn't make any sense it's just no one's claiming real responsibility it's it's
00:01:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
It as well have been a corner. Yes, exactly. Yeah, yeah. No.
00:01:49
Kieran McGinley
Pointless I think I think five aside teams could do a better job than that and It's it's a big one because Amram's got to have an answer for that.
00:01:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Mhm.
00:01:57
Kieran McGinley
He has to have an answer for for what just happened there um Starting I mean starting Xerxes it just seemed like this was a game where he focused more on rotation and very much underestimated Bournemouth considering now this is the consecutive time we've now lost to Bournemouth 3-0 and
00:02:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.

Squad Rotation Decisions

00:02:15
Kieran McGinley
You know, we clearly underestimated them. Amram clearly underestimated them.
00:02:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you're not wrong. and It's a difficult one. He clearly was doing a bit of squad rotation. Also on Spurs on Thursday night, he didn't even start our best team in that either. So, um you know, Hylin's clearly the informed striker. I know Xerxes got a goal against Spurs, but mainly Forrester kicked it in his own net. So I don't think we can kind of give much um give most praise for that goal. But I mean, at some stage, yes, the manager has to have an answer, but at some stage, you're just going to have to go and put your head on the ball. like um and And you did mention it it's just happening so often at the moment.
00:02:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then the reaction, you know, a bit of a surge in the last 10 minutes of the first half, trying to get ah a goal, a couple of chances for Bruno, a couple of half chances as well.
00:03:00
Kieran McGinley
Hmm.
00:03:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then that penalty, I mean, like, that is like, Maserati has been one of our best players all year, but that just seemed like a frustrated tackle. I mean, it was, it it was just,
00:03:09
Kieran McGinley
Yeah.
00:03:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was so late, like it was he was never never making it um and such a such an easy an easy chance for them. um it was It was just the wrong decision um and it's cost us badly.

Inconsistent Performance

00:03:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's ahs not looking good. like I mean, still 13th, Bournemouth are into Europe spots now at the moment.
00:03:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I don't know, like, I don't know really where to go from this like are the players are the players just not good enough. I think that's just my conclusion at the moment. um You know we're coming into January where we look to to reinforce but we've been saying we need a new squad for probably the guts of 10 years.
00:03:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
and the amount of money we've spent. And we're still looking at the squad going, yeah, like it's it's weak. um And you know looking around at some of those matches yesterday, thinking all these teams play better football and look more of a team and know where they're meant to be on the pitch and are creating more chances. And and even if they're not winning, they look like they know what they're doing. But this bunch is just difficult. It is difficult. And they're just they just break your heart every time they walk out of the pitch.
00:04:13
Kieran McGinley
Yeah well when you're when you're senior players or when you've got players there that have been there for years that aren't pulling their weight that infects into the entire squad and the the key thing is you've got to get rid of that deadwood you have to and you have to be more and ruthless you do.
00:04:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
It does, yeah
00:04:31
Kieran McGinley
Because otherwise, we will never get anywhere.
00:04:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah.
00:04:32
Kieran McGinley
no you know You look at Pep, i mean not a great example right now, but he's got six Premier League titles. Not because he's very, very nice to players, not because he's given players a chance, but because he's ruthless.
00:04:44
Kieran McGinley
I mean, we saw the likes of Joe Hart, right to the start of his tenure, get absolutely dropped.
00:04:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:04:49
Kieran McGinley
i've got You've got no future here. OK, it started off with Bravo and it wasn't quite well, but Edison then came in after that in the summer afterwards, and that was just sort of their springboard into complete success.
00:05:01
Kieran McGinley
I just think, I mean, that wasn't pep mine, but, you know, I just feel like. I don't know, we need a we need Amram to be ruthless and January is his chance.

Transfer Window Opportunities

00:05:11
Kieran McGinley
It's his chance to absolutely gut the squad of players he doesn't want to be there. I think he's made the message clear and he's made the hints very clear about the players he's talking about.
00:05:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:21
Kieran McGinley
Now he's got to put actions where it matters. you know It's all good to talk about players you don't want there. Now it's the time for action. Let's get rid of those players. you know is Is it a case of get rid of them in January, just try and hold the four, try and get top half finish?
00:05:35
Kieran McGinley
I mean, it's been such a crazy, like again, another penny for the counter here.

League Unpredictability

00:05:41
Kieran McGinley
The amount of times we said it's been such a crazy league, everyone's dropping points everywhere, it seems, apart from right at the very top.
00:05:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:48
Kieran McGinley
It's just a case of we need to be consistent. And if we're consistent, we've got half a chance of making it back into the top half. But there's just none of that. And into the most hectic schedule of the year, December, as we all know, it's the most hectic time of the month where you've got to have squad rotation in there.
00:06:04
Kieran McGinley
You you can't afford to be inconsistent. And for United, how do we go from winning against City to absolutely getting our something's handed to us against Bournemouth?

Strategic Implementation Challenges

00:06:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
literally no and yeah a couple of things like we mentioned before Amur coming into this job clearly knew was a big job but i really don't think he knew like i think he was expecting a bit more to be honest from the players and from the squad and and maybe thought that if he does get his title play implemented that will start to see results but i think now he's slowly starting to realize that the issues are a lot deeper and he is making the right moves in the right directions but
00:06:16
Kieran McGinley
It doesn't make a lot of sense.
00:06:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
about calling out players and standards. But yeah, you probably should have signed a longer deal. I mean, this isn't going to be fixed in in a January transfer window or even in the next summer. Like it's not even about all the players we need to come in to bolster the squad. But like you said, getting rid of players that have been here for a while that just aren't pulling their weight, getting rid of players that have underperformed over the last couple of years as well.
00:07:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
and that takes time and it's difficult to shift those players as well with some of the contracts and actually making value for money from it and getting some sort of return and you know that that all can't fall on the manager as well and it's just it just seems like an absolutely massive job and it's very difficult to know where to start because like you said you're looking at at the league table and and the the league in general is so inconsistent this year everyone's kind of dropping points like you mentioned um except for Liverpool but this should be We should be higher up the table if everyone's dropping points. If this was another season, we'd be in real, real trouble. um And you're looking at all the teams we have, and none of them look like they're winnable games. like every Every team you look at, you're you're going, they they have a bit more about them than we do at the moment. um Even just watching Villa yesterday against City. like i mean
00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, you probably take their whole team over our whole team at the moment, like in terms of doing a combined 11 and they're not even at the top.
00:07:57
Kieran McGinley
Well,
00:08:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
So you're kind of looking around the league.
00:08:01
Kieran McGinley
apart from Emmet, but I will keep Emmet.
00:08:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. True, true. But we need to be careful about not overwriting these players as well. Like we've done in the past with my United fans in general, we are kind of clutching and grasping for some bit of positivity.

Building a Consistent Team

00:08:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And sometimes we kind of end up putting the weight of the weight of the world on someone's shoulders. And we've probably done that a lot over the last few years. you know, we need to make sure that it's the right players and and the right amount of players that can carry carry that weight because we can't just put it on on one guy after performing well for a couple of weeks.
00:08:33
Kieran McGinley
Yeah, no, it's a fair point. I mean, you know this has got to be a case of we've got to have a team that's but ah good a good enough team to get us into the top half. and And right now, this is a team that's so inconsistent. You've got a team that at 2-0 down just pretty much lost their heads. there ah There was no way back into the game once that penalty was scored. That was that was that really. um You just sort of felt it in the players. You sort of felt it at Old Trafford as well to to lose 3-0 to Bournemouth again.
00:09:01
Kieran McGinley
you know i I see what Victor was saying now but when he was on your but the guys went over to the yeah crossover.
00:09:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah
00:09:09
Kieran McGinley
you know He was looking for another 3-0. He got it. um I'm very glad very glad he's happy because they're now up to fifth and they're chasing Europe. um That's why when when I set up that conversation with him about, oh yeah you know ah How about hosting or will host you the minnows at Manchester United chasing Europe Bournemouth?
00:09:28
Kieran McGinley
I didn't realise how real that would actually be and it was meant as a joke but it didn't turn out that way. The performance we put in was a bit of a joke.
00:09:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Yeah. Absolutely. I know. Well, at least he's happy. That's good.
00:09:40
Kieran McGinley
One of us is happy.
00:09:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, we'll take a quick break here and we'll be back with, yeah, where do we go from here?

Upcoming Fixtures and Concerns

00:10:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm looking at the upcoming fixtures here Kieran. We have Wolves on the 26th, Newcastle on the 30th, Liverpool on the 5th of Jan. I mean, just like I touched on before the break.
00:10:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like, where where are we getting these points from? Because, you know, wolves you'd expect, they're they've got ah they've got a new manager in or they've got a bit of a bounce. They've after winning 3-0 today, like Newcastle have hit a bit of a farm and then Liverpool are absolutely flying. We'll see how they get on today against um against Spurs. But like, where where do we go from here?
00:10:57
Kieran McGinley
hope and praying that we'll get at least three or four points out of these games.
00:11:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:11:03
Kieran McGinley
It comes to it that Wolves have now won one of the last, I think it's four, could be five now with that win this weekend. And now we're going into that match thinking, right, now we could we could screw up here again.
00:11:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
know.
00:11:18
Kieran McGinley
and then you've got the game against Newcastle which again is at Old Trafford which just seems to be this rickety old shed rather than a fortress that we've we've got there in Manchester so Newcastle could come along and put three or four past us as well then we've got Liverpool going to Anfield you know that's that's a hostile atmosphere for us at the best of times let alone you know seeing what that could be is that's the first game of a new year you know I think
00:11:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.

Mental Fragility and Defensive Failures

00:11:44
Kieran McGinley
That's not going to be great. And then i ask them in the FA Cup when we go to the Emirates. Again, I don't really know. Southampton on the 16th of January. I'm hoping that's a win.
00:11:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
her Yeah.
00:11:55
Kieran McGinley
I'm really hoping that's a win. But I don't know. the I don't really have the answer because I think today proved to me that this squad doesn't have, the it's not mentally strong enough.
00:12:08
Kieran McGinley
Again, time and time again. We don't start these games well. And when we go a goal down, it doesn't feel like we'll come back. Maybe at one nil down, when, as you said, the last few minutes of the first half, we really went for it, try and get that equalizer, try and change up the team talk at half time. but You know, Maserawi puts in that frustrated challenge, brings down his man.
00:12:32
Kieran McGinley
It's a penalty. I mean, you can't really complain about that. And then that's that's the point where we lose our heads and so quickly to concede another goal. Just nailing the coffin at that point.
00:12:43
Kieran McGinley
I think at that point, Bournemouth were happy to shut up shop so much so that they started getting booked for time wasting.
00:12:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah.
00:12:49
Kieran McGinley
you know And that's time wasting at Old Trafford. The away team are time wasting at Old Trafford.
00:12:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:12:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bournemouth, like Bournemouth. Yeah, it's, um and that's the most disappointing really is like, okay, you're losing the game. I mean, first of all, it's it's bad, but then just Then it comes down to a pride situation where you know the third goal should just never be going in. like It should be saying Lads were 2-0 down at Old Trafford against Bournemouth after losing and the in the League Cup a couple of days ago.
00:13:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
like at some stage, you're going to have to put the foot down here and and and really go for it and definitely not concede another goal. And it's not as if it was a blistering counter attack and it was the last minute and we had two men back. Like there was a bit of worked play to actually create that chance and a good play bit of play for Bournemouth just passing through us in the back. And and yeah, it's just it's just poor. And I think you've hit the nail on the head where the side is is is mentally weak at the minute. And and I don't know how you fix that. That's that's not an overnight change. That's not a signing.
00:13:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's ah an overall belief thing and and is it deeper than just the team? is it is it Is it about what's been going on about the players not committing? That happens in all teams though. you know Wolves are are fighting after every game yet they've won 3-0 today away

Transfer Window Doubts

00:14:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
from home. you know like There's United aren't the only team that there's stuff going on in the background and this so other teams can seem to kind of pull these results out of nowhere. so uh i'm struggling as you said to find the answers here straight after the game um i don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing that we have these games coming thick and fast you'd you'd normally say after a loss okay it's good you know we have we have uh we can put this right or we can correct this very very soon rather than going into an international break but is this just going to compound and compound if we have these um games back to back to back and losing every time so
00:14:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I don't know, January is going to be interesting to see who we can get out the door and if there if there is anyone we can bring in because traditionally you'd look at January and go, not probably the best time of the year to be signing players. um You know, players are cup tied, players are in different competitions, middle of the season, probably paying over the odds for them as well. So, um yeah, I don't know. I'm really clutching the straws here.
00:15:02
Kieran McGinley
Yeah, it's a time of year where you sort of look to the to who you can sign on a Bosman, isn't it? You know, you're looking for players who the contracts are up at the end of this year.
00:15:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:10
Kieran McGinley
And who could you say, look, come and join us at Manchester United to ignore, ignore the table. Don't don't don't bear that many that.
00:15:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah yeah.
00:15:18
Kieran McGinley
ah much in mind. Just come and join us here at Manchester United. um I think, you know, I think we'll probably have a look, you know, when it gets closer to January, maybe in January we'll have our sort of transfer podcasts and who who we'd like to bring in all of that good stuff. I just think you're right. Perhaps January might not be the window.
00:15:38
Kieran McGinley
I don't know if it's a case of when we say we want to sort of have this turnover in the squad, is it January? Or does it have to wait till July when some contracts are up?
00:15:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm hmm.
00:15:48
Kieran McGinley
Does it have to wait until then? Because there are a lot of players in that side that now have long-term contracts. I mean, Rashford has that up to 2028, I think. So that's that's a massive contract in terms of length.
00:15:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Madness. Yeah, yeah.
00:16:01
Kieran McGinley
So it's a case of, oh, would we be able to offload him? And in that sense, do we have to sort of offer him out to clubs and pay a portion of his wage if it comes to it? Which, in in a in essence, frees up a little bit of wage you can use for someone else, but not a lot. ah you'd You'd rather want to offer the books altogether. And if he wants to leave, so be it, you know? If he's so apathetic about leaving, I am as well. So I think you do have to be ruthless now. It's not funny anymore. It it was kind of this, you know, we're back, we're not, we're back, we're not.
00:16:34
Kieran McGinley
You know, come on, have some pride, show some passion, for goodness sake.
00:16:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, it is that. It is. Yeah. Yeah. Like this is not just your pub team at the weekend. Like, come on, lads, we should probably like win a game next week. Like as Gary Neville would say, this is what it is.
00:16:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's It's it's a very it's a simple game.
00:16:52
Kieran McGinley
It's embarrassing.
00:16:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like it's a very simple game, you know, and it just looks like a team that are devoid and completely shot of any confidence. And at that level, it's not really an excuse.
00:17:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like the whole team can't be like that. And yeah, let's see. I mean, I think for today's

Conclusion and Future Discussions

00:17:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
episode, we'll have to leave it there. I think me and Kieran are fed up. We'll hopefully we'll have a bit of a crossover with the Wolves guys. I'm not sure what the plan is here in this week, but and we should get in touch with them. And yeah, like as we said, the games are coming thick and fast. um And of course, moving into January, we will take a look at some of those those transfer transfer episodes. And it could be a long one with the list of players we'd probably want to turn over. But ah yeah, we' we'll definitely dig into that.
00:17:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
over the next couple of weeks. But Kieran, thank you for joining me today. um Appreciate the time after that disappointing results. I hope your the rest of your day is looking well and looking positive.
00:17:47
Kieran McGinley
Yeah, we'll we'll see about that.
00:17:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:17:49
Kieran McGinley
Look, I just look get to Boxing Day. Let's just enjoy Christmas um because obviously this is ah our match last match before Christmas. So that's behind us now.
00:17:59
Kieran McGinley
There's there's no more football until Boxing Day. At least let us enjoy our Christmas for goodness sake.
00:18:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
On that note, we'll leave it there. Thanks, everyone, for listening in. If you enjoyed the podcast, don't forget to leave a rating and follow us on the socials as well. Kieran, happy Christmas. We'll chat to you on Boxing Day.
00:18:16
Kieran McGinley
Yes. Oh yeah, yeah, we'll see about that. We'll see about that.
