Introduction and Holiday Musings

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Manchester United Podcast. My name is Niall Hannigan and we're back with a solo episode today. It is, yeah, recording this on the 29th of December, Sunday evening. And we're in that kind of weird phase between Christmas and New Year's where we don't really know what day it is. We definitely don't know what day it is.

Dissecting United's Performance Against Wolves

00:00:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we're just surrounded by football and plenty of food and drink and darts so yeah it's that kind of year but um you're a bit lost I suppose between these days and we can definitely say that United seem to be having that same feeling as well over the last while um obviously we had the Wolves game on St Stephen's Day pretty pretty dismal performance, I would say, abysmal, whatever word you want to call it. and Yes, very lacklustre, 2-0 away at Molyneux. I suppose the second goal was um the last kick of the game, but I mean, from from the start throughout, Wolves are way, way the better team, and this is a Wolves team that that haven't been good either all year, um and it was quite concerning. Just the whole performance itself, I mean,
00:01:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
slow, lackluster, lethargic, um you know void of ideas, I suppose, really really looked like that we couldn't really create anything. um And that that's been quite similar throughout the year. And we've been relying on pieces of brilliance from a Bruno or an Ahmad or Heuland kind of feeding off scraps. And it just became very evident again the last day where where we really don't have that many ideas. and its It's just, it's it's hard to watch, I suppose, first of all, just in general as a neutral that would be watching, it would be hard to watch, but but it's way more difficult as it as an actual fan and trying to get behind the team when you're really feeding off scraps in terms of what you can actually get excited by with this team. um and And once again, it's it's the same players again that are kind of letting down all these managers that are coming

Challenges Ahead for Manchester United

00:02:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
in. um I don't think you can put this on Amorim.
00:02:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah it's going to be It's going to be a storm, like he said a couple of weeks ago. um There's plenty of top matches coming up over the next while. It's not going to get any easier. They're coming thick and fast, so you know the lads are going to have to really get their act together, I suppose, and put a decent foot forward for these games. and and get some sort of semblance of play within 4 because it's just it's just really really bad at the moment and I'd say if I was recording this um straight after the game there'd be nearly a bit more anger involved but it's just
00:02:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's nearly gone past the stage of it being funny at this stage. you know You're 13th, 14th in the league and you know you're you're looking off the bottom there and and any of the games that are coming up, you have zero confidence that we're going to get a result. And we kind of joked about relegation a couple of months ago, but it's I mean, it's it's not ah it's not a ah world away. um And all I kept thinking about this week was, you know, the leads of old, for example, a team that would have been so successful in the past and on how they've kind of just slipped down the leagues over the years. And you're just kind of looking at United going, you're not filling me with confidence that that that won't be the case. But, you know, we we look with positives moving forward. that That's what we can do here at the Channel and look to try and find positives in it. But
00:03:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's It's a difficult challenge at the moment and to try and do that. I was going through X the last day as well and kind of just speaking about the lacklustre and kind of the pace of the game and on how United aren't moving that fast. There was a couple of clips of Ryan Giggs playing at 39 years old against Real Madrid in the Champions League. And you're just like, the if we even had an ounce of that kind of pride and determination and speed of thought and speed of play,
00:04:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know, that that's like the bare minimum, then them would be would be well further up the table and and that would kind of spread, I suppose, throughout the team at the moment, but they just seem to be completely lack of confidence and and maybe that then turns into kind of lack of of effort and what it looks like lack of effort, um which is really tough to watch, you know, um and and not kind of what you want from your team, but, you know, we need that kind of desire back, um you know, if things aren't going well for you, it's it's a matter of pride um and and conceding again from a set piece, I think kind of solidifies that. I mean, if if you're conceding straight from a corner in an under 12 and under 14 match, you'd be you'd be shocked.

Defensive Vulnerabilities and Atmosphere at Old Trafford

00:04:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like you'd be like, look, look, lads, like I know we can't really fill the whole goal here because we're not tall enough, but like we can't really be conceding straight from a corner. You know, we need to do something about that.
00:04:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
but for it to happen within the space of a week or two weeks where not one but both of our goalkeepers have been chipped from from a corner and it's gone straight into the net and and wolves have clearly spotted that as a weakness for us that's just not good enough um and down to a pride thing where you're just like i'm gonna make sure i put my head on this or i'm gonna make sure that if if there are two wolves players boxing the inn I'm going to come out and I'm going to punch the ball and I'm going to bust through them to try and get to that ball. It's just for for a goal to go in like that when when your confidence as a team is so low, it's just it is unforgivable from my perspective. I think conceding from corners is not something that happens regularly and for it to happen to United twice in a week.
00:05:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it just kind of symbolizes where we are at the moment in terms of the the frailties of the club and how fragile we are at the moment and and how kind of how much confidence we're lacking within the team in general and and that spreads around the fanbase as well like I think Amara mentioned in his post-match against Bournemouth that you know he felt that anxiousness around the crowd and around Old Trafford where I think he mentioned that you know even at the goal kick for O'Nana's goal kicks you know you can you can kind of feel that tenseness around the ground and I think that's across all yeah um fan bases now and or all fans across the United fan base at the moment because
00:06:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know You're going into every game, like you're saying, and you have zero confidence that you'll get a result out of it. um And at some stage, we're going to have to start picking up points because you know we thought that Ameren coming in, we'd get at least a bit of a manager bounce. That hasn't really materialized, as we would have thought. And then we also see you know the massive job that he has on his hands over the next few weeks and over the next few months and hopefully years. and But yeah, I mean, we've been saying the same things for the past couple of weeks here on the channel about, you know, he needs time. It's not his players, you know, the players are are to blame as well over the past number of years and and kind of failing. But, air yeah, it was it was a pretty, pretty poor watch um against Wolves and even, yeah, the red card from Bruno. I mean, not the first time we've seen that um this season, um that kind of rashness against Spurs and also in the Europa League.
00:07:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And when you go down to 10 men, 5 minutes into the second half, like i mean it's going to be an uphill battle. But you know at that stage you say, right, let's just throw the kitchen sink at it here. and And we still weren't pressing. And I understand that you can't maybe go full on out pressing where they can kind of pick holes in you. But but this is a world team that don't have that much confidence either. Haven't been good all year.
00:07:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think up to this had about four had won four points at home this season and they find themselves 1-0 up against the United team. You know, that would have been a perfect ah opportunity to kind of try and impose yourself a bit, intimidate the opposition and give it a good go. But we really didn't didn't do that and and sat back and kind of let Wolves gain more confidence into the game. I ended up just kind of passing it around us for the foreseeable, um which made it even more of of a tough watch, I suppose, for the rest of the game.
00:08:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Another interesting point from the kind of sub kind of plot storyline was Kunya's performance from a world's perspective. um And as we know, United are always linked with these but these kind of players. um But there's you know there's been strong links with Kunya over the last couple of

Player Performances and Transfer Speculations

00:08:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
months. And boy, did he give a good audition. and He was absolutely excellent. And when you're looking at Amorim's system and you're looking at those two number 10s and those two attacking with fielders,
00:08:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
In terms of the type of profile you want, you want someone who can run with the ball who's a strong um strong player in possession, not necessarily you know unbelievable passing ability because we would have that in Bruno, but you know someone who can carry the ball and and make decisions with it as well and not going to get bullied off the ball. Kounya fits that bill perfectly.
00:09:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
he He was like a rose rice there running around and and normally that's used with a centre half but he really looked like a stylish runner on the ball. Looked totally in control, kind of brushing past and breezing past some of our players in midfield and and then kind of drawing fouls all over the pitch as well. and you know, you look at a profile like Morgan Rogers as well over the last couple of weeks for Aston Villa has been excellent. We don't really have a player like that to fit into those two number 10s. You know, we have Bruno at the moment who isn't really a ball carrier, is ah is a great passer of the ball and and great IQ at times. And then we kind of have wingers in there as well, like Ahmad or Garnaccio or Rashford trying to play in there.
00:09:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So we're kind of missing that profile of player and Kuniu was someone that was earmarked and and he was absolutely excellent. um I mean got the assist for the final goal but was just pivotal throughout the game. I mean everything that Wills did that was good went through him um and you know there was a lot of comparisons to Ronaldo's audition for Sporting Lisbon in the preseason against United and then being signed but You know, he didn't do himself um any harm anyway, and playing in front of you United and getting that result. So, you know, maybe watch the space in January or next year, but definitely someone I think that that would fit the kind of player profile that, that Amoram will be looking for in that, in that new system that he's looking to adopt. But anyway, we'll take a quick pause here and for a quick advert and then we'll be back after the break with, yeah, looking forward to the coming fixtures.

So as I'm recording this, Sunday 29th, we are playing Newcastle on at tomorrow night, 8pm. Yeah, not looking forward to that one. um Newcastle have been flying and picking up a serious bit of form at the moment. um and And as we mentioned, you know United and are in a bit of disarray. um And you know it's kind of that question that we've always asked ourselves over the past couple of episodes is, right, where do we go from here? Because
00:11:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know, your your expectations of the club are are changing, you know, game by game as those points that we think we might be able to secure are just slipping away. I mean, you look at Nottingham Forest, City, Bournemouth and Wolves and you're thinking surely more than three points from those games, what we got and we got the three points against

Future of Key Players and Financial Decisions

00:12:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
City. I mean,
00:12:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, it's a tough one. um There's still a lot going on in the club in and around it. Obviously the Rashford situation, this is four games now where he's been out of the squad. you know A lot of the kind of pundits are saying that it's it's looking inevitable that he will leave. and There's been reports that have come out today from trusted sources um you know that Rashford and has had issues with a lot of the managers over the past while, um particularly Ranjic and also Amram in their early days. and you know It's hard to know the full truth with this. You want to really support Rashford. He was an unbelievable player for United, um but it is really, really looking inevitable that he will leave um and that you know if he doesn't leave in January, he won't really be part of Amram's plans and will be kind of left out in the cold.
00:13:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
for the next six months or so until the summer um and you know and Garnaccio is kind of in a similar situation where yes he has been involved in the squad he's been making you know sub appearances but he's looking like a bit shy of confidence or maybe a bit disinterested as well at times and you know is is there talks going on that that he could move on and I know Atletico Madrid were linked with um with a fee for him but It just there doesn't feel like a great atmosphere around the club at the moment. In EOS have been cotton cutting cut and costs in different areas around um you know former players that that have played for United and and having that kind of charitable donation that they would have every year and and that's been cut as well. and
00:13:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know it doesn't really sit too well when they're kind of penny pinching on things like this when you have players there that are just earning you know quadruple what there might be pulling in terms of wages and anyone they're earning that four times of that per week um and you know that that's tough to take especially when the club isn't going into administration you know it's not as if the club is on dire straits um obviously overspent over the past decade or so and probably still have a lot of that to pay back, but you know ah in no way in danger. So you know that that doesn't sit too well, especially when you know the club isn't doing that well in the pitch either. and and you know And then you have kind of unhappy employees within the club and unhappy people that are associated with the club.
00:14:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
um you know, a bit of tumultuous times for any of us in general, you know, hiring and firing people on their on their team, um you know, bringing in Amram, you know, after a couple of months at the start of the new season. so Yeah, it's um it's like we said before, it's all the same things. I mean, I don't think we'll we'll ever um will ever get tired or never have anything to talk about when it comes to a United perspective. and But yeah, it's ah it's definitely not the most positive atmosphere at the moment around the club. And the only really way that can change is is if there's positive results happening on the pitch.
00:15:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And when it comes to that, I'm not being filled with confidence from these performances. I mean, there might be glimpses of, you know, a couple of five, 10-minute spells. There was a five, 10-minute spell at the end of the first half in the Bournemouth game where I started to put a bit of press on and started to get a bit of joy from it and just didn't didn't convert the chances that we created. I think me and you played Bruno in for for a good chance there and it was kind of ah a purr finish. um So, you know, there's there's glimpses there, but you know We're really feeding up scraps at the moment in terms of looking for positives here. um I still don't think we know what our best 11 is. I think Amram's still trying to figure that out. I think in a way you know that Mount injury um is is a big one for him. I feel like he's a big fan of him. um I wanted to kind of build that kind of midfield four or even you know the versatility amount to be able to play him in multiple positions and you know he'll be disappointed that he's not available now and probably until March, April time. You know you're trying to figure out the Bruno conundrum where you know is he better in that those number 10s? Is he better in a deeper lying position maybe beside Ugarte or Menu?
00:16:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
and you know, is there enough legs in that midfield with Ugaritay and Menu? I'm not sure. um You know, do we need to get someone in who's just more athletic to kind of free up Menu and to kind of do all that running for him? I know Matt, myself and Matt have kind of disagreed on Ugaritay's impact over the past few months. um I think from my perspective the jury's still out on that but I know that he's still adapting to the league and hopefully he can kind of turn that around but you know, I still think that midfield is an issue for us. and When you look around at the other ah midfields, and particularly who we're going to be coming up against now in Newcastle, I mean,
00:17:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bruno Guimarais, Tonali, you know, you have ah Joe Linton in there as well. You know, that might feel is way better than ours. It just is at the moment. um You know, we have the attacking players of Jacob Murphy's doing really well. And then you have Gordon and Isaac are both on fire. You know, that's that's scaring me. You have, you know, Lewis Hall, who's linking up really well with Gordon on the left hand side as well.

Expectations for the Newcastle Game and Conclusion

00:17:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know There's a lot of things that you can kind of point to in different teams. and And if you were someone else looking at you United, you'd go and probably Ahmad or Diallo. That's probably it. um And that's a lot of pressure to be putting on um a young lad who who's who's had you know good impact in a lot of games, but but by no means should be your best player and should be kind of um you know putting the weight of the world on his shoulders and and trying to bring the club forward. so Yeah, and I'm not, you know, I'm looking forward to the game. Obviously, my expectations will be back up again. I'm ready to get my heart broken again um from from a United perspective. But, you know, I can't I can't be that positive going into that Newcastle game on Monday night.
00:18:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and yeah in terms of predictions I mean if I'm going with my head honestly I would have to say probably a Newcastle win and if I'm going with my heart I think I'll have to go with a draw I think that's probably the best we could do at the moment and I think just in the vein of form that Newcastle have been in um and how kind of shook we look I suppose at the moment Bruno will be missing as well um let's see if we have other players that'll kind of step up to the plate but yeah it's um
00:18:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Once again, interesting times at United, tumultuous times, um you know, we have leaks in the stadium. ah When, ah when Amorums are going to do a press conference, um you know, it's not really like, ah I've mentioned it before, but really like a symbol for for how things are going for him and the kind of storm that he's been welcomed into over the past couple of weeks.
00:19:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, look, we aim to stay positive. um We will have some reaction, I'm sure, this week um on the podcast of that Newcastle game and looking forward to to the games that are coming, I think, Liverpool or in the New Year. So that'll be great. But ah yeah, we have plenty of time to deep dive into that, I suppose, and to pick out how we're going to how we're going to get a result in that game. But Yes, thank you everyone for joining. I hope you all had a great Christmas and are looking forward to to the new year. I'm sure we all are at the Daily Man United. It can't get any worse. um And I know Kieran's going to say, well, Mick McCarthy has said it best when he said it can, but
00:19:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's hope. Let's hope for the best. um Yeah, and let's say ah couple or's how a couple of wishes that United will will have a bit more bit more fortune and and a bit more of a style of play coming to the New Year. But anyway, that's all from me. Thank you very much for for listening. If you enjoyed the podcast, if you enjoy any of the episodes,
