Introduction and Weekend Banter

00:00:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, everyone, and welcome back to the Daily Manchester United Podcast. My name is Niall Hannigan, and I'm back with Daniel. Daniel, how's it going?
00:00:15
Daniel
Yeah, I'm all good, I'm all good.
00:00:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good stuff. Nice weekend.

Wildcard Wednesday: Dream Signings

00:00:19
Daniel
Yeah, I could have been a bit better if McGuire could have scored back. I'm as good as I can be.
00:00:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, we'll let him off the hook for that, I think. um But yeah, I mean, things are looking up this week, which is good. Wildcard Wednesday, we've decided to kind of go with a couple of players that we we'd love to kind of to bring in, I suppose. nothing Nothing outrageous in terms of best players in the world. But yeah, players that that we feel could strike on the team and and that are, I suppose, realistic in a way as well, whether that's January or in in the summer.
00:00:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
It could be any position. um Obviously, we're we need a lot of reinforcements in different areas. um But yeah, Daniel, you can kick us off. Who is the first sign in that you'd like to to bring in that you think could make ah an impact for us?

Analyzing Current Left Wing Backs

00:01:06
Daniel
um I think right now, personally, I feel like the main positions, I'm going to say the main positions that I think we should probably be looking at are probably a left wing back formation.
00:01:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:01:17
Daniel
I think the right side is pretty, there's that balance of Mazuri if we want to be a bit more defensive and Ahmad if we want to be a bit more offensive. So I think I'm happy with the right side of the pitch but I think that lot doesn't always look as comfortable on the left side.
00:01:29
Daniel
you know, he doesn't know where to be. So I think I'm going to go as a left wing back first. I think this guy called Patrick Bourgu plays for um Leech in Serie R. I saw today that we were interested in him.
00:01:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nice.
00:01:41
Daniel
What's his name? So Britz here posted it today on on on Twitter that we were interested in. We were looking at a few left wing backs here, Nuno Mendez, and um Kirk is from Bournemouth as well.
00:01:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or must, yeah.
00:01:54
Daniel
I think ki he he most impresses because he he won, he plays in that Fireback system already. like um he knows what what is it takes to be a wingback and I think very he's very offensive and I think that's what we need. I feel like there's that lack of offensive talent well at the wingbacks. I think Missouri is very good defensively but I still feel like going forward at times he's a bit too um passive and this guy is fast, he's strong, he's skillful. the I've seen him score a few goals as well so yeah I think right now I'll probably lean and say more towards him than Nuno Mendez or Kirk has.
00:02:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, great shout. I think the left wing back is definitely an area we need to look at. I think I mentioned yesterday on on the podcast with Ollie about DeMarco and Dom Freeze, the two wing backs for Inter Milan and how good they've been. And it's great that the They're in specialized positions. They're used to playing in the back five as well. um I was going to mention Kirk Hayes, but I'm going to go with Aidan Noury from Wolves for a left wing back. He plays in a back four, I suppose, but extremely comfortable in the final third, which is something that Dallow looks a bit uncomfortable sometimes on that left hand side, like you're saying. So um yeah, I think on the the left wing back, unfortunately, like I can't see Shaw being there

Midfield Link Players: Needs and Comparisons

00:03:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
consistently.
00:03:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It's just difficult. He's just always out. I mean, I saw and a post there saying he'd be back before the end of the month, but I think we've seen that so many times that it's kind of hard to put any sort of belief behind it. um we We mentioned Molassia as well yesterday on the podcast. um what's your What's your opinions on him? Do you think he could do a job or or is he up to it?
00:03:29
Daniel
I think if I was to choose between who probably goes out of loot store and molasses, I'd probably say molasses over loot store because loot store is what he's been in 10 years.
00:03:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:38
Daniel
I've seen Hernandez has almost played the same amount of games as loot store. ah there and how long Luke Saw's been here. that in I think Luke Saw when he's fit, he's one of the best left backs in the world when he's fit.
00:03:51
Daniel
However, voice it's just about staying fit and fair he can't stay fit. There does come a time where it is time for him to move on.
00:03:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:03:59
Daniel
and i've always been quiteff I've also fond of him moving to that left centre back role as well. with
00:04:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah. yeah
00:04:05
Daniel
running up and down as he would at left wing back. So if that's something he wants to adopt being a left center back instead of being a left wing back, I feel I'm more towards that. But yeah, my last year, I feel like we just, again, the injuries that he's had, we haven't seen what we're gonna, we're not sure what he's gonna do, what he's gonna offer, especially in this fireback system where he's offered to be a bit more attacking.
00:04:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exactly.
00:04:27
Daniel
So I think I'll still give him another chance. He's still got a couple years on his contract, so I've still given him another chance, honestly.

Break and Tech Talk

00:04:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, no, absolutely. It's really hard to know with him because like you said, he's barely played. um It's just like, you're not really sure if he's probably too small to be in the the back, the three, the left of the back three. um And then, you know, he's he's played a couple of games that left wing back this year, but he's been slowly kind of brought into the team. So.
00:04:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's it's difficult to know. But I suppose, yeah, he's he young. We might as well keep him. But yeah, as an interest, we both went for a left wing back. But I think it's pretty glaringly obvious at the moment that that is ah a space we need to reinforce.

Evaluating Defensive Options

00:05:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Moving on, Dan, who do you think would also make a bit of an impact? I mean, there's there's plenty of um have your positions to choose from.
00:05:16
Daniel
I'll probably go over this. He's called Edison based for Atalanta in in Serie R as well. I think I've been doing a lot of research on Serie R, I think.
00:05:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I was just going to say, that's brilliant.
00:05:30
Daniel
I watched them play in the Champions League, I watched them play against Arsenal, I watched them play against a few other teams in LA. The way he could receive the ball under pressure, the way he's able to link, the he looks forward. His first thought as a midfielder is always to play the ball forward, and I feel like we kind of lack that a bit with, you know, Meinu and Yagata, who are I'm very happy with.
00:05:49
Daniel
i I'm not going to say that. They're not, that you know, they both should have started whatever, but...
00:05:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah.
00:05:52
Daniel
um but I feel like this guy gives us something different in the midfield that I don't think we have, especially with, um you know, I think Ericsson does offer that, you know, being able to get the ball and passing it forward. Casemiro doesn't quite offer it, but this guy can do what Casemiro does as well as Ericsson does in one play away.
00:06:07
Daniel
He's a good ball winner and he's very
00:06:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nice.
00:06:09
Daniel
progressive the way he gets the ball, when he gets the ball, he's ready to pass the ball forward. And I feel like that's the missing thing for Manchester United right now. I feel like when I watch us play, as much as I'm seeing a new system and kind of enjoying certain patterns of play, I feel like we still do at times lack that, you know, midfield that says, okay, can I get, let me get the ball off the defenders and I can, you know,
00:06:27
Daniel
make something happen um the in the final third pretty much. I think Coby Main is great when it comes to ball carrying. I don't think he's the greatest of, you know, progressive pastors, but in terms of ball carrying, Coby Main is great, and in terms of ball winning, Ugata is great.
00:06:41
Daniel
But if we can get both of the things together, I think he's the perfect mode for it.
00:06:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's a great shout. and I think I mentioned a couple of weeks ago about Ugarte. And I think i so I said that he was kind of hiding in

Challenges of Signing Top Strikers

00:06:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
a way from in terms of taking the ball off the the center halves.
00:06:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, he was excellent on the ball against Liverpool. But the thing is, everyone was unbelievable against Liverpool. So I don't know if that's a one-off or if that's actually how they're going to carry on.
00:07:04
Daniel
Thanks.
00:07:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So I've probably been a bit critical of Ugarte. But yeah, I'm interested to to to find out more about this guy. what sort of Is there a comparison at all that you would make of of who he plays like?
00:07:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
or I mean, you you mentioned kind of the combination of skills that that he would have with the players that we currently have in the squad, but is there anyone that that he would kind of remind you of or stature-wise, is he big, small?
00:07:32
Daniel
but like A bit like Douglas Duggies was at Aston Villa last season.
00:07:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, OK. OK.
00:07:36
Daniel
went now someone the composttible forty did that his first was busboard and He's a very good footballer as well. i but justter you know
00:07:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:43
Daniel
He's a great ball-winning type of thing. He's a very good footballer. You see what Brazilians all the time, and a Brazilian player is always going to have that little bit of flair to them, that quality a bit of quality to them.
00:07:53
Daniel
so yeah I think he will be a great player. I've i seen Man United are interested, I've seen Real Madrid are interested in him. ah Even at a point in time when the Rotary injury happened, I think Man City were interested in him as well.
00:08:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:05
Daniel
But it will elevate us in that time of the engine room.
00:08:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brilliant. Brilliant. No, I need to do a bit more research on him. He sounds ah sounds interesting. and um But yeah, good stuff. OK, we'll take a quick break here. We'll be back with a few more players after this.

I'm going to stay in Syria um and pick a bit of ah a more well-known defender um and I'm sticking with my Inter Milan roots after watching the guys at the some of the highlights of the weekend. um I think Bastoni would be unbelievable at United in the back three. i mean He plays there with Italy, he plays there with Milan. Him and Euro in the future of the United back three with but whoever you want there, Maguire to elect Martinez, I don't care. But to have the kind of calmness, and football and ability, stature, speed, game intelligence, IQ, I think it would it would be unbelievable. I've been very, I suppose, impressed with Euro.
00:09:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
um The calmness on the ball, he moves everything first touch, which is brilliant. Like, it keeps everything moving because sometimes it can get a bit static with the back three. um The chase down tackle against Liverpool as well recently is just kind of an example of um his game awareness and his tackling ability. And I think Bastoni is kind of a similar stature defender. um So I think he'd be it' be really, really nice to have in a long term back three, I think, under the system.
00:10:11
Daniel
Nah, I agree with you. I spoke with my friend about it as well. You were talking about Bastogne. You were saying how much like if we could get a Bastogne at left centre back, he'd take...
00:10:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not incredible.
00:10:22
Daniel
I think he's an amazing centre back. I think it's so good. The only thing about him is I felt like it was a bit unattainable for United. That was the one thing we were talking about.
00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:10:31
Daniel
ah and and and That the That At this in time, they are a better side than the United.
00:10:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm hmm.
00:10:40
Daniel
that's still
00:10:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:41
Daniel
and stuff like that. So I feel in that regard, it was a bit unattainable. But if, by any chance, if he wanted to come to the United, by any means, I would say, I think he's an amazing center back.
00:10:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I do think it it would be a bit bit of an outrageous deal. and It would be a huge bit of money. And he also kind of seems like one of those players that but might just stay at Inter's whole career um and might and might just kind of see it out there, a bit of a Keilini kind of figure.
00:11:03
Daniel
Yeah.
00:11:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Because like what is the next step for him? Is it a Madrid? like I don't know.
00:11:12
Daniel
No,
00:11:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, he probably would suit that, but he seems to have everything sorted for himself in Inter.
00:11:19
Daniel
and I agree with you. I think ah especially with Italian on football, as you saw at California, they were all, but like, they wanted them to stay in Syria.
00:11:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:11:26
Daniel
I feel like with Italian football, it's always like, ah, we want our Italian players to play in our league. The best Italian players should be playing in this area. They shouldn't be going to all these other... I think with him, yeah, like you said, I think he might be a into legend forever. I think he might be staying into for the rest of his career. But I would be so happy to have him at United. If week there was a chance that we could get him at United, I would definitely take it.
00:11:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, um definitely wouldn't be complaining about that anyway. um But yeah, all right. So we've done a lot of Syria. um Is your is your third but third and final player also going to be from that league?
00:11:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Are you going to mix it up, Dan?
00:12:01
Daniel
He doesn't play in the Serie R, but he has played in the Serie R.
00:12:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Please, Italian. ah but yeah
00:12:07
Daniel
He just left the Serie R to go to the Turkish league. We're going to be surprised as well. A lot of people might not think we might need a Schalke, but I think we do. I think that's that that is a position of need right now.
00:12:17
Daniel
i think The way his art he looks, it it looks like he might be on his way out already because yeah and might not it might not be the best fit for him at Manchester United. I've seen that Mortar Juventus wants him back. So if

Strategic Player Movements

00:12:30
Daniel
you can if we can find him back to Juventus, that would be perfect. That can work for us. and um But yeah, I think an striker that's on the market right now, Austin Mend, I would take him. I think I would jump at any opportunity to take him. He's a class striker. I think he's somebody that with Bruno Fernandez behind him, trying to find him and stuff like that. He's strong. He's fast. Somebody that could probably learn off as well. He's a decent finisher, a good finisher. He gets a good amount of goals. I think he's got like 10 goals in 12, in 12 matches in the Turkish league. But what he did for Napoli in the Serie A when they won the league, I think he was even Serie A player of the season. Him or Caruscellio were one of the players of the season, I think.
00:13:11
Daniel
That is probably what we need right now, like a strike, or that's, that's, the kind of know what he's, we don't really need to train him up on these, or like fix him, he knows what he's doing up there already.
00:13:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. um I'm always torn with awesome. And obviously, he's he's great. But like i just but someone sometimes with those strikers, it's really hit or miss. like um And is it going to be like a Lukaku, or is it going to be a Drogba? It's very kind of hard to to know how he's going to translate into the Premier League, for example.
00:13:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But, yeah, I mean, there's no doubt in that season for Napoli himself and Kravitzgelya were just unplayable and the the stats kind of go for themselves. Why why do you think he ended up in in Turkey? Like, it seems like a ah strange move to kind of do after after doing so well at Napoli.
00:13:59
Daniel
I think the main problem was, is this I'm a Nigerian myself, and I think the main problem was, it's this kind of money hungry, how they get with, when you're starting to see a lot of money, you want more

Potential Transformative Signings

00:14:10
Daniel
and more and more and more money, and I find that then i think my think.
00:14:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:14:14
Daniel
Ocement, I mean not Ocement, Napoli kind of have this thing of how they're operating transfers, how they want to get rid of their players and how much they want to get for their players. We've seen it with Covani, we've seen it with all their costs. Anyone that's like great, that came out of Napoli, Iguain, it's like you have to pay the big money for them.
00:14:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:30
Daniel
They're going to make sure that they get the best out, that they're going to get the most money out of their players. And I feel like they kind of locked him down when he wanted to leave, where he felt like he was ready to make that move to like, you know, maybe a Chelsea or an Arsenal.
00:14:41
Daniel
or just a bigger team in general when he just had that great season. And then I think there was a situation as well when he went to the Nigerian camp and he he kind of embarrassed himself. he had He had a problem with the coach he got the coach. The coach got sacked the next day and like a lot of teams might look at that and like, okay, maybe this guy might not be the best person to bring in type of thing. And then I think there was also a situation with annapoli the Napoli ups as well where I think he pretty much said he doesn't want to be here no more. So they said, don't OK, cool. If you don't want to be here no more, you're not going to play for us. And that's why they sent them.
00:15:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's interesting. and I didn't actually know that, to be honest. But yeah, it's a good point about Napoli as well. I mean, Kravitz Kelly is another player that's probably looking for probably a bit of a move at times. um You know, they haven't really reached the heights since since that title winning season, and and he's probably getting on as well in terms of wanting a big move. So it'd be interesting to see how much they get for him, because as you said, they always kind of look to,
00:15:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
to make the most of those transfers and get get the biggest book they can. So um yeah, let's watch this space. But we'll take one more break here, and we'll be back with my final selection for this episode.
00:16:00
Daniel

00:16:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to stick with the the striker theme. um And I've probably gone for a bit of a not an outrageous one, but but one that'd be very, very difficult to land and would cost a lot. But Alexander Isaac from Newcastle to United, I mean, oh, he's just beautiful to watch as well. He's so stylish with it, but also absolutely deadly finisher. um And I think he would suit our system so, so well. um has legs, can run the channels, but also technically unbelievable. like um And having ah having a few playmakers in behind him in the two number 10s, I think, would be brilliant. And once we get those improvements in the wing back positions as well to support him even more. But yeah, I just think he's got everything, really. He's kind of those one of those strikers that is wiry strong. You think he's going to be pushed off the ball, but just always kind of maintains it and gets a shot away, and great technique as well. and
00:17:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah i mean I suppose a lot of people are saying that Arsenal should try and go in for them because all they need is they're probably a striker away from actually winning the league. But um I think we as United probably need to get back to buying the best players from the clubs that are coming up around around the Premier League. um We've done it in the past with Berbatov, for example, being an example of a player that is kind of world class, but at not at a club that's kind of challenging at the top. And I think for United to get back there, we need to kind of have the best in class and he's unbelievable. He's brilliant.

Conclusion and Future Transfers

00:18:00
Daniel
three of you, honestly. I remember watching him at social debt before he came to Newcastle and I was thinking, oh, he's a good player. on And then when Newcastle paid $75, I was like, okay, so bit it's a bit much, but I do see where you're coming over. I think he is a good player. and then He's just shot me up.
00:18:18
Daniel
Ever since I've watched him, he has just smoothed the mountains. I enjoy watching... I like strikers because obviously I'm a striker when I play as well. ah I just enjoy watching players get the ball to their feet. They like to dribble.
00:18:29
Daniel
They like to take on players. They can score all...
00:18:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:18:31
Daniel
They're strong. They're physically, they're faster. He just has the whole package. Like you said, it's a bit outlandish, but I do agree with you that I feel like we should be picked, like, by our players that are from teams that are in and around us, you know, that they're not, you know, the best teams or challenges that these are players that could take us to the next level. We can teams around us, like new faster and stuff like that. So, yeah, it's like he is ours. Just like Bastone again, if we could Again, these are players that raised the ceiling for Manchester United. I think Arsenal was more of like a realistic type signer for me because obviously I know Nepali are trying to sign, but if we could get Isek, or like a Isek or a Gicarus, I'll prefer Isek over Gicarus, but those are like ceiling raisers right there.
00:19:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
absolutely and he's he's so young as well he's kind of just coming into his prime um but yeah you're right i mean i was chatting to actually uh ollie yesterday about it and um thinking back on that 0-8 team like you had Tevez, Rooney, Ronaldo and Berbatov like no wonder we won stuff like i mean you have four unbelievable strikers and like now we're kind of We have one striker, and we have two two really, really young strikers that are inexperienced. like you You wouldn't associate United with that. and you know We're pinning our hopes on a 21-year-old or a 22-year-old that's just kind of learning and has a serious amount of pressure on them and came for a massive price tag. So I think for us to get back to the top,
00:20:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's what we used to do, buy around us and create kind of monsters from them as well. But yeah, it is a bit a bit more outrageous. I think it would be it would be close to a world record fee. You know, it that sounds ridiculous. But it definitely in in the Premier League, it would probably would be a record um to try and get him off Newcastle. But I mean, the Vena Farm is in at the moment is just unbelievable. Like he's scoring every week.
00:20:28
Daniel
He scored today as well against Arsenal, I guess I was watching the game before we came on here.
00:20:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
like
00:20:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, it's insane. It's brilliant. But yeah, any other kind of shout outs that you want to give kind of players that were close close to making your top three? or and We have a whole month of January to talk about transfers, I'm sure. So if there are any you missed out on, we can mention them again. but
00:20:53
Daniel
Yeah, obviously I mentioned a good career. I think obviously the hammering that does that. Nuno Mendes as well for left wing. Back I've seen more interesting Nuno Mendes again, another link with Amarin. But I don't want it to be a situation like Tenhago where we keep having to like, we're bringing players that are his players or his players that are for you.
00:21:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
used to play with them. Yeah, yeah.
