Standoff on the Ship
00:00:00
Speaker
We're just, I'll tell you what, you stand on one side of the ship. I'll stand on one side of the ship. We're called MacBennar and whoever he goes to. This is very Anakin, this is very Anakin, Mace Windu and Darth Sidious right here.
Episode Introduction
00:00:27
Speaker
Hello everyone and welcome to this week's episode of the Fellowship of the Table Plop. Table plop. Table plop. Table plop. There's this show right there. There we are. There we are. There's the intro. I've ruined it. I've ruined it all this time. Table plop. Three years. Table plop. Not once has it been called table plop and now forever it's going to be called the table plop. I know. Thanks, Darren.
00:00:51
Speaker
Anyway, if you're interested, we're a live play 5e podcast set what was in the kingdom of shadow men. We're now in the kingdom of D'Artona in the magical realm of Eris. My name is Darren and I'm going to attempt to run Dungeons and Dragons for you this evening.
Character Introductions
00:01:05
Speaker
And with me tonight, I have Will playing the human ranger hunter McBenna. Dive, dive, dive. We have Ian playing the dragonborn paladin Drago. What up?
00:01:21
Speaker
And we have our Wilbot one-shot extraordinaire playing the deceitful, delightful, bardlock that is Karl Jeet. We're going down under. Where we pick up?
Teleportation Mishap
00:01:37
Speaker
We find ourselves emerged in the depths of the D'Artonian Ocean inside two cabins on a boat called the Endless Horizon, but how did we get there listeners before we went plop into the ocean? I hear you ask. Well, what happened was, as our characters came to from their teleportation out of the city of Fatherkeep, they found themselves confronted by a fisherman calling himself to be Petrichor.
00:02:00
Speaker
who smells of the fresh rain that lands on
Failed Ambush and Air Cabin Refuge
00:02:02
Speaker
Eryth. Turns out this fisherman who was quite cocky about being alone wasn't actually alone and that he was preparing to teleport the pirate fleet of Sariah Mistfall into an ambush and one of Drezlin's silk slips and Wren botching the teleportation circle spell in Fatherkeep meant that she intercepted his spell. Sariah Mistfall appeared and seemed quite angry at losing her quarry and didn't appreciate the backchat that she was getting from McBenna
00:02:29
Speaker
However, the name Drago seemed to defuse the situation. With that, Sariah Misfal said that she wanted to place the adventurers into an air cabin as they descended under the ocean while she figures out what to do and what is going on.
Forming Friendships and Mysterious Voices
00:02:46
Speaker
There a series of conversations happened. Drago and Wren had this epic exposition where Drago only got a couple of things wrong. And also, Carl and McBenna seemed to form a friendship unbeknownst to McBenna what Carl had done in Fatherkeep. And as the evening set in and sleep descended on our party, a voice rang out for Carl.
00:03:12
Speaker
asking Karl to find the darkest point at the Arctic horizon, to bring the tome to this mysterious voice and that he shall be rewarded. He was told to go into the ocean at the hour of the God's union. We're going to pick up back in the cabin with Drago and Ren as a knock rings out on the door of your chamber
Nighttime Ship Observations
00:03:37
Speaker
You both come to slightly groggy and realize that it is still nighttime. Though as you glance outside of the cabin window, you notice that moonlight is now descending in and illuminating the room. You are back on the surface. A figure enters the cabin. It is petrichal. He looks at you both and just says, follow me, and then heads out of the cabin.
00:04:09
Speaker
Stay behind me and try and stay close. Sure. And she follows you. As you go out you see Petricall waiting at the steps leading back onto the deck. As you're let up you see a clear starry night. You see that the ocean is calm. You can see up in the crows nest that Ganesi sits high up.
Identity and Recognition Questions
00:04:32
Speaker
You see that this is the only ship that has ascended, save for one other that seems to be in quite bad disrepair, which is standing alongside the endless horizon. You see on the deck Sariah Mistfall and what appears to be a child who seems to be sat facing out towards the ocean. Sariah turns and comes to you. You can hear the child singing softly to themself. She looks at you.
00:05:00
Speaker
and offers you a flag in the beer, which she seems to just swipe down into this open barrel and she holds it out to you. Drago takes it and downs it. With a nod and a kind of a cheers without saying cheers, just raises the glass briefly, nods and then downs the beer. She gestures to the barrel and goes, help yourself.
00:05:29
Speaker
Jairu picks up the barrel. No, he does not. Thanks. Ren, do you want one? Yeah, I do. You hear Ren say, and by all means, Sarai missful gestures and Ren comes over to the barrel and gets herself one as well. These ships once belonged to Drezlin.
00:05:50
Speaker
and all the line of how, though it's hard to tell which. I acquired them and their goods and now use them to provide a home to my people. That's the type of person I am, Dragonborn. Question is, who are you? Uh, Drago. Hmm. Curious. You're not the first Dragonborn I've met. And you're certainly the first Dragonborn I've met to have gone by that name.
00:06:21
Speaker
Sorry, what? Are you the Drago? Let's scale back. There's another Drago. Or is there another Dragonborn who's going around calling himself Drago? It appears to be the case this one was shorter than you and would have a slightly slight refrain but was the same colour and would look like you.
00:06:50
Speaker
and called himself Drago. He did. Right. Any idea where he is or was? Because I've got to deal with that.
Gift of the Tempest
00:07:04
Speaker
Some things have changed since my absence. She points off the bow of the ship and you can see the faint outline of the shadow of Horizon. When the sun rises in the morning you will see
00:07:18
Speaker
the vast wilderness of the verandian jungle before you. I deposited this dragonborn there after he did a great kindness for me.
00:07:33
Speaker
I am the drago from the light, I guess. It would be wise to say around here, myself, Robin, Folly, some others. Can't stand up.
00:07:58
Speaker
No, no, no. That was for you. That was for you. And myself, Folly, Robin, Castan, Claude, Elena. We defeated the Blight. I'm part of that party. If news of that spread here. She comes over to another Ganasi, one of the guards, who appears to hand her something and she comes back to you with a book and she holds it out to you and you can see on the front
00:08:26
Speaker
The description of the ending of the Blight and the reign of Helena Setgard and the name of the auster, Karstan. Finbin, whatever his long name was. What was his name? Karstan Finbin Val Horne. Amazing. This isn't Shadow Mend. I'm aware of what's happening in the world. And I'm aware of the unberscared Blight. She offers the book to you.
00:08:55
Speaker
Drago takes it. What is this? It's a tale of your escapades and adventure. There's a little too fruity and fancy for my taste, but you might get a rise out of it. Was this written by Karsdan? I assume so, but that's why someone's plagiarising his name. He actually went and did it. Wow. And then Drago starts flicking through it.
00:09:21
Speaker
It's kind of a slight smile as he's doing so. You noticed on one of the pages there is a testament and it says to my friends Claude and Folly. To those still with me, Drago, Robin, Helena. And at the bottom there's a dot dot dot followed by the bagpipes of for you Drago.
00:09:52
Speaker
Drago laughs when he reads that. So perhaps you are the Drago, which does beg the question who the other one was. Yeah, well, that's probably another problem for another time. What do you need from me? Why am I here? She gestures to the child at the end of the boat. The child there is rain.
00:10:18
Speaker
She belonged to my sister. She was offered under the subjugation of Chatham, and this dragonborn claiming to be called Drago brought her to me. This dragonborn had a story about why he wanted no reward from me. He said that his name was Drago, son of Dengon, and was from a place called the Sword Coast.
Ship Repairs and Future Plans
00:10:42
Speaker
Seems as if he knows you quite well. Okay, he probably read the book.
00:10:46
Speaker
as Drago kind of waves about Carstan's book. Perhaps. Though he said his reason for wanting no reward was because he knew what it was like to be abandoned in a strange place and to have lost his family. I can't claim to understand why you were teleported here, but I can tell you that this other Drago is somewhere over there. I'm a believer in fortune and that D'Artona
00:11:11
Speaker
Well, Dartona wants me to return the favor from this other Dragonborn, and in lieu of him taking it, I'm going to bestow it upon you. This ship here, and she gestures to the one next to it, this is called the Tempest, and I'm afraid it's in quite a bad way, but I mean to gift it to you. In the morning, I'm going to gift you this ship. I think it's quite obvious what I said.
00:11:42
Speaker
No, it's I mean, did you put something in this drink? Are you? Hold on. So you took me and us underwater and now it's morning. We're above water. You're it's still nightfall. It's still dark. It's not morning yet. You can only see the shadow of land yet. It's still it's still nightfall.
00:12:06
Speaker
But you brought us up into the open and now you're telling me that you're gifting me two ships I'm giving you that one over there. And if you can see the tempest Yes, it's in quite a bit of disrepair. I'm afraid it's going to take a while to fix but I reckon if you head into land you will
00:12:29
Speaker
be able to find the means of fixing your ship. I recommend the village, which is just on the horizon there. You can't see it yet, but it will become clear by noon. You'll find some tortles there. They will be able to repair your ship whilst you wait, go into the jungle, seek out Dashcaleria, the great jungle city of the verandian, do whatever you will.
00:12:55
Speaker
I would suggest finding a crew. Whilst I'll give you the ship, I will not give you the means of manning it. My people are to remain with me. Why are you doing this? My niece would be dead, along with my sister, if it was not for this dragonborn claiming to be Drago. Whilst it is true- But I'm not that Drago. I'm aware of that. I saved Aerith.
00:13:22
Speaker
I'm also aware of that. She says with a smile. A debt of kindness is owed. I mean to pay it. And when you strike land and when you tell people of Sarai, Miss Will, tell her that she is a protector of her people and not a pirate, as people say. Right.
00:13:48
Speaker
Okay. Perhaps coming from the hero of the ember scab light, that might mean something. Hero of the ember scab light. Okay, at least I have a name to go by. Like, can you explain to me where I am in relation to Sleepguard? The far side of the world, I'm afraid.
00:14:10
Speaker
Great. You're about six months, eight months, maybe 10 months, depending on choppy season and unfair travel away from sleep guard. And at that, Drago's going to look to the skies, and you really can't teleport me there next to Robin. Arms outstretched. Anything? Are you talking to anyone in particular? Akiva.
00:14:37
Speaker
That's what she's asking. She doesn't know who we're keeping. Oh shit, sorry. So I get, but I get nothing. No. Right. Okay. No, to myself, as always. Fine. Eight months, 10 months. Robin. There's a hell of a favor. Well, I hate to break it to you, but your ship is going to take at least
00:15:06
Speaker
Well it's going to take some time to repair it but... Well I'm really glad that the efforts of saving Aerith resulted in a broken ship. You're welcome.
00:15:18
Speaker
Yeah, thank you. That ship is worth quite a lot of money in full. Oh yeah, when it's fixed. I'll cover the report. Sorry, sorry. I've just had a lot to deal with. I don't mean to be ungrateful. I appreciate what you've done considering by all means you could have left us for dead.
Father Keep's Challenges
00:15:38
Speaker
What of the other two?
00:15:40
Speaker
They're not staying with me, they can't breathe underwater. Take them with you, take them ashore and leave them, do what you wish I didn't. No, I wish to take them with me, I was just making sure that... I could. I don't like the fact that they've been working for Drezlin, but clearly whatever they were trying to do from him by the sounds of your conversation, Petrieclaw tells me that they failed. Which means they're as much Drezlin's enemy as I am, which means I have no cause to kill them, though
00:16:10
Speaker
You're a bit strong to cast judgment. You don't know their history. All I know is that they were looking for coin and they found a job. We've all been there. There's looking for coin and then there's whatever it is they were doing, which no one has yet to tell me where exactly where you.
00:16:32
Speaker
I don't know. I don't know these parts. I was in some sort of vault. From what I could tell. In a place called Shadow Mend. Honestly, I'm not the best person to ask. Father Keep. Wren chaps up. We were in Father Keep. Siriah Mistfall pauses at that and says... You have to be desperate or stupid to go into the free city of Father Keep. It's lost.
00:17:01
Speaker
Well, let's just assume desperate and maybe look at them with a kinder eye. I'm not killing them. That's me looking at them with a kinder eye. Fair enough. Well, I suppose if you were in Father Keep you have need of finishing your rest and gaining whatever else asleep you can before dawn.
00:17:32
Speaker
Come the morning, my crew will escort this ship just close enough to the docks of the tortles of the village called Fish Tortoll will be able to repair your ship. From there, you'll probably have to wait a couple of weeks. I would. Have you ever seen a dinosaur before? What's a dinosaur?
00:18:00
Speaker
I reckon you'd like them. I'd go exploring in the verandian. It will expand your horizon more than it already has been, Dragonborn. And Drago. Drago, she says all the time. Thank you. I appreciate your kindness.
00:18:27
Speaker
Make sure when you speak of the First Lady of D'Arte and that you tell others about. Yes, I will. You're not a pirate and you're out there to help people. I've got you.
Departure Preparations and Plans
00:18:40
Speaker
Very good. She nods to Petricle, who gestures as if to point you back in the direction of your cabin.
00:18:50
Speaker
Drago's gonna fill the cup again and take it with him. Is there anyone? Is there anyone? Yeah, Ren's gonna do the same. Ren will see that. Oh, Ren's got one. Okay, cool. Ren's gonna see that. Oh, good idea. And he's just gonna jump over and fill hers up as well. She's then gonna look at Petrochor and say, can we have a keg of this?
00:19:17
Speaker
Petricall looks at Saraya Mistfall, who kind of smiles. I'm sure that can be arranged. And as you descend back into your cabin, you go into the room and you find already with the efficiency that there is a flagon, two more flagons and a keg now positioned on the desk. So you can drink yourself back to sleep should you wish to do so. Ren is going to
00:19:48
Speaker
sip on her beer as she sits at the table and is then just going to look at you and say, there's someone else out there called Drago. Yeah, I wouldn't pay too much heed to that. Most likely some dragonborns caught wind of a successful dragonborn and it's just going around using my name. Hmm.
00:20:13
Speaker
Here we are in a strange set of circumstances, though. However, Fortune has smiled on us. We have a ship, so... And Drago's taking big gulps. So a rough plan would be to go into this fishing city, town, fix the ship, find the means to sail it, and make our way to Sleepguard. I'll get you towards Robin. She holds out her tankard at that, as if to say cheers.
00:20:45
Speaker
And as you both continue to drink, we will allow more time to pass as the night continues. It's a long night and you two are not the only two to wait that evening. A few more hours pass and we cut across the room.
00:21:07
Speaker
This time you are woken as you feel what appears to be like the soft pull of like your ears getting warm, almost like that feeling you get when they say someone's talking about you.
Mystery of Carl's Disappearance
00:21:20
Speaker
You hear a voice say, magically, find me at the front of the ship, storage area. Come alone.
00:21:33
Speaker
And as you come to McBenna, you glance around and you too can now see that the moonlit night is pouring through a window and that's your door is just slightly ajar. McBenna will have sort of awoken and he'll sort of like open one eye, like just to look around. And then he'll sort of, then he'll turn his head.
00:22:02
Speaker
and cast a glance. That's where Carl is. Does he look asleep? Carl's above you because it's a bunk bed, so you'd have to get out of the bed. Okay, imagine sort of just leaning sort of. It takes a moment. Yep, okay. And then and then he sort of leans out of bed as quiet as he can.
00:22:32
Speaker
Stands. And then just glances towards Karl. You glance towards the bunk. Karl is not there. Right. Where the fuck has he gone? Right. And sort of checking his sleeve where his van braces are.
00:23:04
Speaker
and satisfied that his insurance policy is still there, he's going to stealthily start to leave the cell into the corridor. Okay, do you want to make a stealth check for me, please? Yeah, right. Even with my good modifier, that's an 11.
00:23:30
Speaker
Yeah, you step out into the corridor, and then you don't notice that the floor is still damp. It's quite clear that the moisture left from the descent is still very much in the corridor. And as you put a foot down, you slip, and you're able to adjust yourself, but it just causes a creak in the floorboards. You pause for a second, and to your relief, realize no one's heard you. The ship appears to be dead. It appears to be dead to the well, asleep.
00:24:00
Speaker
Okay. And McBenna will take a minute, peer into Drago and Ren's cell. Door is shut. You can try opening it by all means. Can I see them through it? There is no window on the door. Okay.
00:24:24
Speaker
If I sort of like push a finger against, I guess put places like fingertips, does anything happen if I touch the door? Yeah, do you want to give me a slight hand check? Because I assume you're trying to do this as quietly as possible. Well, what I'm trying to do is you're trying to touch the door because you're trying to see is like the magical barrier of the air seal going to stop him, have they still got that up to keep them in, that kind of thing.
00:24:47
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. Do you want to give me, first of all, a perception check and then, yeah, before you put your hand on the door, let's try a perception check. Yeah. Okay. That's a 22. Yeah. You're quietly confident that there's no need for whatever magic was keeping the water out. And the way that the seal isn't on your door, you're quietly convinced it's not on this one or any others. Okay. But then I will,
00:25:18
Speaker
Take a minute. Is there only one way out of this corridor the way they came in or does it go elsewhere? There's the stairs up which go towards the back of the boat and then there is the way down towards the front of the boat and the message that you just got through the cantrip message which again you would be aware of as a member of the Rainier said to come to the storage area and come alone.
Betrayal and Secrets Revealed
00:25:41
Speaker
Okay. He's going to
00:25:50
Speaker
look the way they were brought down is it is it from us is it like straight up some stairs and we're on deck or was there a bit of a passage to get there's a slight passage 15 feet maybe that's fine okay he's gonna look that way
00:26:06
Speaker
pause and this is almost like the sort of the veil of this old man is sort of like cast aside for a minute and it's almost like he's almost like a younger man almost and he's prowling, he's silent, his every movement is taken with real care.
00:26:32
Speaker
And he looks down the corridor towards the deck. And then he looks towards where the bow of the ship is, where the storage area must be. And slowly, he's going to pull out from his
00:27:00
Speaker
What looks like a bit of decorative metallic design and he presses it and just slips it out and it's this very thin dagger, almost more of a punch dagger because it has a hole in it that you can put his finger into just to make it easier to keep hold of.
00:27:22
Speaker
and he's going to keep it and he sort of holds it so that it's a point towards him resting against his forearms so it's still hidden slightly but now able to be used quickly and he's going to slowly start to edge his way towards the front of the boat trying to keep his every sense now is looking and trying to sense
00:27:51
Speaker
any kind of threats that might come for him. Okay, do you want to roll perception in stealth if you make your way to the front of the boat, please? Yeah, so... Huh. Yeah, looks like the old man and I's are working. So that's a two on my perception for a four, followed by, I just can't be consistent right now, a nine on my stealth, which means I rolled 17 on my stealth.
00:28:17
Speaker
Okay, you moved stealthily and deftly, though what unnerves you or what strikes you with what makes this unnerving is that the the sheer alien nature of where you are on board a ship. You've probably never left shadow men before. You've had no reasons to be on the boat. You've descended into the gorge of sortmare, which is in itself a terrifying ordeal. But that's familiar. Where you are at the minute is strange. So whilst you move stealthily,
00:28:46
Speaker
you don't notice anything untoward, but you're acutely aware that your senses are not attuned to this environment. You do, however, make your way to the front of the ship and find a door that has a simple sign engraved into it that says bowel storage. Ben is going to take a minute and sort of
00:29:14
Speaker
All right lad, calm yourself, jumping at shadows, just, ooh, it's okay, great. And with his non-bladed hand, he's going to keep that right hand with the blade just ready. He's going to sort of push or pull, depending on how the door works, the storage door open. Yeah.
00:29:39
Speaker
Are you trying to do this stealthily or? Yeah, again, he's doing it very, very clearly. First of all, he sort of does it slightly, so he's not pushing it over the open really quickly. He's like stealthy, so if anything sort of tries to lunge at him out of the doorway. He's ready for it. He's ready for it. Rather than sort of open the door, he knows that he could either suddenly slam the door back onto himself to put it between him or something like that.
00:30:06
Speaker
Yeah, do you want to make a slight of hand check, please? Yeah, I can. Yeah, it's not great. It's a three, so that's a nine for my slight of hand. The door opens, not as stealthy as you would like.
00:30:24
Speaker
no one seems to be disturbed. You see the dark silhouettes coming through some of the port-a-colons of barrels, of containers, of food, of just a general storage room. What do you want to do? I will step in and then McBenna steps, and as he steps around the door,
00:30:51
Speaker
He pushes it closed behind him. You're now in this storage room container, whatever you want to call it.
00:31:06
Speaker
You then hear something behind you, if you're now facing the door, go, uh, forgive me. No, no, no, no, sorry. I would have kept my, I would kept looking at the room and it would have been a left hand pushing the door behind me so that at no point does McBenna ever. Okay. You see this then you see it turns back to the ridge. This figure is completely cloaked in what appears to be almost like bandages and healing cloths and swathes of silk and linen. It'll have to forgive my appearance.
00:31:36
Speaker
I was at the Sisterhold Lyceum for many years and I was working on the scales of vermin, like Haddo IV, and it's
00:31:48
Speaker
like him it's and he holds up his hands and you can see that he's his blue ganasi hands are crusted as if they're turning to stone you would recognize this as an ailment called rock skin it effectively comes from people who allow themselves to be too close to dragon scale for a long period of time
Confrontation with Carl
00:32:11
Speaker
looks at you and said, I would not show you my face. It is much more punishing than the rest of me. You're the one that spoke to me. I am. What do you want? When I was at the Lyceum,
00:32:37
Speaker
I was quite good as a diviner. In fact, I was next in line after Archibald Virenius. I miss him. But anyway, after he was killed, I was next in line to be the royal sous-sayer to the line of Haddo itself. Unfortunately, Euron Cardenale saw fit to put my order to the sword and banish me. But anyway, that's a tale that you need not bother yourself with. Instead, it's my portency that I bring to you.
00:33:08
Speaker
Right, I don't hold stock with. Sooth says, I make my own future. Okay, well, I have something for you that you perhaps need to be aware of. The tabaxi you share a cabin with is not to be trusted. And why not? Because I know what he did.
00:33:34
Speaker
I know that you've come from Father Keep, and I know that you know I'm showing you the degree of my potency, because you've not told that to anyone else. I know that there was a human and a gnome with you. And whilst it was the shadows that killed them, it was the Tabaxi who ensured that they missed the teleportation circle. It's a lot. It's a lot there.
00:34:04
Speaker
I did. I have more to say. Divination magic. I have more to say. I know what he plans to do, and I know who he serves. The tome, it's not in Father Keep, it's with the Tabaxi. You should be aware of that. He can't be allowed to plan what he does with it. I am an old and feeble man.
00:34:27
Speaker
But should the Tabaxi get away with that, I see a darkness fall across you and fall across many others, should he succeed. And what is he trying to do? Escape. Aye, but... He's on the deck of the ship right now and... A strange force is helping him, only you can stop him. Who's he trying to take the book to?
00:34:55
Speaker
Something arced, something dark and old and ancient. Only you can stop him. Hurry to the deck, McBenna, Ranger of the Rainier. Aye. Thank you, Sousais.
00:35:25
Speaker
And McBenna's going to pull open the door behind him, step backwards through the doorway, and then pull it shut. Okay. And then he's going to make his way back to the corridor where the rooms are.
00:35:55
Speaker
and I'm going to try and open Drago and Ren's door. Okay, yep. You open their door. What do I see?
00:36:08
Speaker
Drago and Wen appear to be asleep in their bunks. It probably stands to reason, I'm assuming this forie in that Drago would be on the bottom bunk as the taller one. He ain't a bum. You would probably look at these bunks and think that actually the top bunk is going to probably struggle with the weight of Drago and someone as nimble and deft as Ren is less likely to collapse through it in the middle of the night. Drago is a big boy.
00:36:37
Speaker
Um, everyone will go over to Drago. McBenham will go over to Drago. Um, and sort of just tap him lightly on the arm. Drago. No response. Slap his cheek. Drago.
00:37:01
Speaker
Oh, Drago, something's around. No, no, no, no time. No minute. Something's around. Who is... McBano, is that you? Yeah, something's out with Carl. Okay. Hang on. Hang on. Something's happened to Carl. Okay. Okay. Either the ganache guy. No, either. He's something's doing something to him.
00:37:27
Speaker
or his son looks down the river, I don't know. He's not in his room. Okay. Someone's told me that apparently he's responsible for the other two dying. What's happening? And he's got the book. Oh, that's a lot. He's trying to do something. Yeah. Oh, this is a lot. What's going on? Oh, Ren go back to sleep.
00:37:48
Speaker
Oh, okay. Where, where, where is he? He's on the deck. That's cool. Okay. You lead the way. Okay. Ryan, we're going on the deck. Am I coming or? No, stay here. And everyone will leave. Trust me. Drago out the room and up onto the deck. Okay.
00:38:11
Speaker
What you both see when you arrive on the deck is that you assume, even though it's still pitch black, that dawn can't be far off. You can hear the Twitter of birds singing. You look up at the crow's nest and you can see that the Ganasi who was in there, who was sat up sprightly earlier Drago, is now slumped over. There's no sign of Saraya Misfal. There's no sign of the child who was on deck.
00:38:41
Speaker
There is, however, the silhouetted figure of Karl. And Rick Benner's gonna relax. His dagger's still... Sorry, I'm letting you all keep going, Darren, sorry. Nope, that's what you're getting. His dagger's still sort of drawn in his right hand, but resting against his forearms is sort of... Sorry, it's still concealed. Karl, what's going on? I thought we were in this together.
00:39:11
Speaker
Carl! Carl would be facing away from you at this point. And as he turns, you see his eyes are almost purple, glowing somewhat. The colour of it is...
00:39:37
Speaker
is the exact same as that of Ren's own purple eyes. He turns to face both Macbenna and Drago and looks at you, Macbenna, and says, they took Drago and Ren above the ship without us. Do you deny it, Drago? His eyes still on Macbenna.
00:40:07
Speaker
Um, before you answer, Drago, this purple, you've seen this before. You've saw this in the eyes of, are you serious? Oh, God damn it. Shit. Is it like, like night and day? I know the difference. I know, I know. You know, the difference between Ren and what's that this purple is unnervingly similar to, to when Al fear had, had turned beyond redemption. Oh, fuck's sake.
00:40:37
Speaker
Okay. You asked, do I deny it, right? Okay, so with a measured look, Drago stands next to McBenna and just slowly says, as he's adding the maths of the situation, I'll... No, I don't deny it.
00:41:11
Speaker
Ren has the tome. She sent Mickey and the squirrel to their deaths. I heard them talking about it on the deck. Get away from him, McBennar. Careful, I am. Yeah, go for it, McBennar.
00:41:35
Speaker
We're just, I'll tell you what, you stand on one side of the ship. I'll stand on one side of the ship. We're called McBenna and whoever he goes to. This is Derry Anakin. This is Derry Anakin, Mace Windu and Darth Sidious. So I've got a 19 on my on my insight check. I would have also heard a... Be careful here, McBenna. Carl is not who he seems right now.
00:42:03
Speaker
I have a plus seven to my deception. You can roll it with disadvantage. I rolled already and it is not good. I got a 10 for overall.
00:42:24
Speaker
everything you said about Ren getting you out of there about the way that Miki sprinted, the way that Karl seemed to tease Eddic with getting him to hand over coin, the way that he seems to have hanged around at the back, the fact that he's been trying to send your senses elsewhere,
00:42:47
Speaker
It all starts to make sense and this portancy, the urgency of stopping him starts to make sense to you. You see straight through Karl and like Drago see the darkness that is at least for the present time consuming him. That's a mighty big accusation to say that Ren's got the book, Karl.
Breaking Through Darkness
00:43:12
Speaker
Perhaps you come away from the edge of the boat and we
00:43:18
Speaker
talk about this and work out where we all are we can put all our cards on the table and we can do what we have to do yeah me and you got your others backs yeah let's go come on you swore to me Macbeth you swore you'd have my back no that I didn't swear I said I would
00:43:48
Speaker
But if you've got my back, I've got your back. Do you have my back right now, Carl? Do you have it so that you know what you've doing is going to benefit me and that you haven't lied to me? You tell me that you've got my back 100%. You come here and look me in the eye. Can I do that? Why not?
00:44:17
Speaker
my actions. They're not my own. She's making me. Well, whoever's making you do out, Carl, I can help you. We can stop you. Drag will help you. He's an helper. He's a good one.
00:44:36
Speaker
I've seen this happen before, Carl. See, he can help. He can fix you. If you can hear me, I know you're in a corner of your mind trying hard to fight. Keep fighting. Take back control of your own mind and body. It can be done.
00:45:02
Speaker
As with this is happening, like Ben is slowly starting to each time just he's he's keeping his body language neutral. He's not yet brought his weapon up. But he just shuffling his feet forward, followed by the next foot, just trying to get closer to Carl. Because I see him Carl's at the very edge of the boat. Carl's what I would say Carl is
00:45:28
Speaker
about just the other side of Midway, maybe moving towards the bow. Is that fair to say, Karl? I don't want to. Yep. I would say so. Yep. Cool. And Macbeth is just taking it, just slowly, just keeping eye contact with him, sliding his foot along, next foot, just trying to be as least threatening as possible whilst wanting to get closer. Okay. Karl will
00:45:58
Speaker
take his eyes very briefly off McBurner, unlock them with Drago, and just say, stay there, this doesn't concern you. And I'd like to cast Suggestion. And once more, if you'll allow me to, I'd like to pop my cutting words onto that as well. Go for it.
00:46:23
Speaker
Actually, yeah, I'll allow this as you would, but this will trigger initiative and this happens. OK, right. So I basically I need a wisdom save from cargo.
00:46:47
Speaker
I've got a plus four for wisdom, and I rolled a natural one. Yeah, three off of it as well, because if I just rolled three. So, I mean, it sounds like that's a reasonable request that you just stay where you are. Am I of sound mind, and I just can't move? What's going on there? I guess that was up to you.
00:47:15
Speaker
The idea of suggestion is that you get this thought in your mind that actually, yes, I will stay here. It's Jedi mind trick where, but you don't think you're being told who's by someone else. You think actually something inside of you goes, yes, I should stay here. This is a good idea.
00:47:30
Speaker
Okay. Sorry to cut in there, Will. It's worth noting, though, that an act of hostility will probably break that, like something that immediately breaks the... Would it? Actually, I don't know. No, because it's not... Okay. It's not until the whole point of suggestion is, until the suggestion is... So what was the phrase you said, Karl?
00:47:53
Speaker
I said, say where you are, this doesn't concern you. Right. So the moment in theory that that suggestion.
00:48:01
Speaker
fulfills its objectives, so the moment that it does concern Drago would be probably when, because the whole point of suggestion is, the target with Beggar Wisdom saving throw suggests a course of action, the suggested course of action can continue from the entire duration, if the suggested activity can be completed in a shorter time, the spell ends when the subject finishes what it's asked to do, you can also specify conditions that will trigger a special activity during the duration, for example, you might suggest that a knight gives their warhorse to the first beggar, blah, blah, blah, blah.
00:48:31
Speaker
Okay, so I won't know that that's just happened. It's just a thought that's committed. Yeah. Okay, awesome. You're right. This doesn't concern me. Just keep fighting. I'm not getting involved. I'm staying exactly where I am. And I'm trying to talk to you, Carl.
00:48:57
Speaker
Ben, you hear Drago say that and you realize something nefarious has happened. Can I ask everyone to roll initiative, please? Oh, for fuck's sake. Get help. Here we go. That was crap. I am rolling shit tonight. That was dog shit. It's probably better than mine. No, it really wasn't. Okay. 20 plus. 15 to 20.
00:49:26
Speaker
10 to 15. Five to 10. I got five. I got five too. I got eight. Okay, Drago's top of the initiative. Colin McBennar, dexterity modifiers please. Plus four. Oh, bear with me. Oh, press them again. Ah, plus three. Okay, the initiative order is Drago McBennar.
00:49:54
Speaker
Karl. Yeah, I rolled a one. Me too. But I'm not an initiative bonus with a bloody tenaxine, I don't know. Yeah. Can I just confirm, I was told not to get involved and stay where I was. When you were told this doesn't concern you. Now the only one say don't get involved. I can't remember the exact wording, I'll be entirely honest. I think what you said, what Will said was, stay where you are, this doesn't concern you.
00:50:22
Speaker
Okay. Awesome. All right. Now the moment it does in theory.
00:50:26
Speaker
you could break it if you follow me. But it's up to you, I think, at that point and what will things. I'm just going to read, I know it's a kind of editor's note, but I'm just going to read the spell. It's quite important to know what Drago's options are. Just because I want to play it right. Yeah, and I don't want to make you redundant in what's happening. I don't care about that. The wording says the suggested course of action can continue for the entire duration. If the suggested activity can be completed in a shorter time, the spell ends when the subject finishes what he's been asked to do.
00:50:58
Speaker
I've got that. My important things, my true north, it doesn't concern me. I know that much. Stay where I am. I know that. Don't get involved. That's my thing. What did I hear? Don't get involved.
00:51:14
Speaker
No, I don't think you did. No. Okay, that's fine. Thank you very much. So I am how far is Macbenna from me? Hold on. If you or any of your companions damage the target, the spell ends. So if you take damage, the spell ends. Yeah. Yeah. Okay, cool. No, no, no. Yeah, sorry. Yeah.
00:51:38
Speaker
Regardless, how far is McBenna from me? McBenna's edged about 10, 15 feet away by this point. I was told to stay where I was, so I'm not doing that. I can't do anything.
00:52:00
Speaker
Okay, cool. All my shit is touch-based. Yeah, cool. You've moved out of my touch. I can't touch you. Touch me. So once again, just with a measured but sympathetic look, just watching Karl.
00:52:17
Speaker
That's it. And, and, uh, that's, that's the end of my go. Cause I, I just literally spoke before this initiative said, uh, rolled saying that I'm talking to Carl. So that still stands. And all I'm doing is I'm standing where I am. Um, I do into the suggestion and I will, yeah, I'm looking sympathetically and measured. Thank you. McBenna, your turn. Okay. McBenna will look towards Carl and be like, go on, Carl.
00:52:48
Speaker
We don't have to go south. We can come and sit down and we can talk this through.
Magical Conflict and Escape
00:52:54
Speaker
As I was saying that.
00:52:58
Speaker
I'm gonna cast as if a strike on myself Mm-hmm, which is a bonus action. Mm-hmm at this point all of a sudden The red hot chili peppers coming in seven eight. Sorry. I should also say that I will say the long rest has completed by the way and just so you can both you give one can reset everything and basically all of a sudden McBenna
00:53:23
Speaker
starts to move a bit straighter. He's almost moving a little bit easier, like the youth is flowing through him because essentially I can now move like the wind and I don't provoke an opportunity attacks when I move around. And I'm still going to just keep slowly one step, two steps. How far is Karl from me? Karl is approximately another, so you'd already moved 15 feet. Karl's about another 20 feet away, so you can get to Karl this turn.
00:53:53
Speaker
Okay, I'm going to move, so I'm about 10 feet away from him. And, and they were like, just come back down with me. And then I'm going to take the dodge action. Karl, Karl's kind of panicked expression, just immediately.
00:54:23
Speaker
stops and his eyes glance back to you McBender and he goes, oh you should have just left me the fuck alone and I'm gonna cast Distant Whispers. Go for it. Wisdom save, wisdom 13. Okay.
00:54:45
Speaker
No, that's a four. Fuck. And I rolled really good on the damage. 16 points of damage and you've got to run away from me. Okay.
00:54:56
Speaker
Is that reaction? I'm also seeing if suggestion is concentration because... It is. It is concentration, but I can concentrate on it and still cast another spell. It's less I cast another concentration, so... Yeah, he's right. Okay, whispers does not require concentration. This is incredible, like... So yeah, it says... I'm going to be sleeping with the fishes. Immediately use the reaction if available to move as far as your speed will allow from me.
00:55:26
Speaker
I will move, MacBenna will move away from me 30 feet, and as he moves, is there any cover, Darren? Back down the steps, but you won't get to them this time. You'll be able to make your moves towards them. I might sort of, and my cover's going to be Drago, I'm going to sort of dodge and sort of go towards Drago. Drago, this is going south.
00:55:55
Speaker
Hang on, hang on. I need to make a concentration check. Sorry. I love this so much. I can't remember the concentration. It gets me each time. It's 10 or it will be 10 because of the damage you took. It's a 10 DC. It's 10 or half the damage, whatever's great. Yeah, no, I failed my DC. So Zephyr Strike drops. That's fine. Okay. I've got seven. That's it. Sorry.
00:56:25
Speaker
Okay. Did you fly away? Drago, it's your turn. And I've told you that this is going south. Yeah. Yep. Yep. I'm now stood behind. I've heard that. I've heard that not getting involved just doesn't concern me.
00:56:53
Speaker
Yeah. So Jago, did I see the attack, though? You did. Yeah. Do you see an attack? It's in the mind. Oh, wow. Oh, my God. So Jago is going to just kind of hold up both hands, showing you the palms.
00:57:22
Speaker
Still talking to you, Carl. Just fight what you can. I'm staying right where I am. That's all I can do. That's literally all I can do. That's my goal.
00:57:42
Speaker
Okay, we're going all out. I'm going to recast Zephyr Strike. The dagger will flick upright into McBenna's hand. I'm going to make a straight bead line, and I should be able to get there to Catboy. Okay, yep, yep, yep. Yeah, you can if you dash. Oh no, you've only gone first, but you've gone straight. Yeah, you've gone...
00:58:11
Speaker
Yeah Yeah, you're 40 feet away. Yeah, you're 40 feet away. Okay in that case Yeah, okay. No, I'm still gonna do it I'm gonna move 30 feet on 10 feet away and then I'm going to throw the dagger at you And then cuz of Zephyr strike I'm gonna give myself advantage on this weapon attack roll. Oh shit. Okay roll to hit Good
00:58:42
Speaker
Second roll, that's a 20 non-natural. Yeah, definitely hits. Okay. So you take eight points of piercing damage. And then you take an additional four points of force damage as this dagger is...
00:59:06
Speaker
slammed into you with that force and then because of this, whether I hit or miss, my walking spade increases by another 30 feet and then I'm going to use the other 10 feet to get right in your face.
00:59:19
Speaker
And Karl, can you make a concentration check, please? Of course I can. The spell ends straight away. It says if you or any of your companions damage the target, the spell... No, you're damaging me. Sorry, yeah. Do I get to use my con modifier for that? Oh wait, no, it's a con save, isn't it? It's a con save. You took 12 points of damage. Concentration drops. Okay. Drago, whatever was over you drops.
00:59:48
Speaker
Okay, cool. Do I know it was a spell or is it just like a thought that just ended my mind and left?
00:59:54
Speaker
Good question. Sorry for the very deep questions. No, good question because it probably influences what you're going to do. It is a thought because the... That's okay. So, convinced that it was my own thought and just like any other thoughts, go through my mind and then it just passes by. Okay. Yeah, it's not like, there's a spell called friends, there's a couple of charm person. Yeah, you know that someone's done it. Yeah, you don't know. Awesome. Sweet. But you've just seen me throw a dagger at him and then... Yeah.
01:00:24
Speaker
Anyway, it's Karl's turn. Cool. Taking that hit, he's going to obviously recoil a little bit. The smile fades from his face knowing that that concentration has dropped as well. Drag always going to kill me. He'll shout whilst also casting Dissonant Whispers again at McBenna, this time using a bonus action for cutting words also. I'm casting this at second level now. Okay. This I'm saving for, yeah? Correct.
01:00:54
Speaker
Nah. Six. Minus two. So, let's just quickly get that damage going. I'm pressing the wrong buttons here. I'm pressing the wrong place. My hands are shaking. This is exciting. This is awesome. Not as good. But even though it's a level higher, 13 points of psychic damage and you need to run another 30 feet away. He can't. McBenna is going to suddenly spin around and hit the deck.
01:01:23
Speaker
Oh shit. Shit. And with that, with him kind of dropping in front of him, Karl will kind of put his hands up and walk backwards and go, I don't know what happened. And he's going to turn and look over his shoulder. What does the horizon look like? Darkness. But you do notice on the mountain tops, just starting the silhouette of the mountains and a faint slice of orange dawn is approaching.
01:01:49
Speaker
Okay, he'll kind of turn back and have his hands, or one hand obviously raised, looking at Drago, the other hand is still clinging quite tightly to the lantern that he's had within the whole time. Thank you. Drago, it's your turn. Two questions. How far is MacBenna? And then how far is Karl from MacBenna?
01:02:14
Speaker
McBennon is 40 feet from you because you were a little bit ahead of him. It's actually about 40 feet away. Carl, did you use your entire movement to back up, Carl? No. No, I'd remain close-ish to him, but I would have backed to about five feet or so. All right, Carl's 45, 50 feet away.
01:02:39
Speaker
So he's 10 feet from McBenna. What do you say? 45? Hold on. No, this is important now. How far is Karl from McBenna? Five feet. So he's 45 feet away. OK. Wow. And you know what? All I can do is walk forwards 30 feet and look like a douche. Shit. You can dash. No, I don't want to. OK.
01:03:10
Speaker
Right. Fuck! Right. Okay. Okay. I'm going to... Fuck it. Let's do that. I'm going to walk forwards after watching McBenna just, for whatever reason, hit the deck. Drago's going to walk forward
01:03:39
Speaker
Still hands up, because he's still not sure where that thought came from, so he's not sure what's going on. He's walking forwards, but still looking deep into Carl's eyes, trying to search for a flicker of Carl, and remembering everything from Althea.
01:04:01
Speaker
And as he's walking forwards, he's just going to be saying, Karl, no one is here to hurt you. We just need to reach you from in your mind. I need you to stop and drop. I'm going to cast command as I reach the full 30 foot. So I'm only so far away from MacBenna and I, yeah, I will cast command and hopefully drop you prone.
01:04:32
Speaker
I didn't tell me to drop prone. I'm with you. Yeah, basically. So yeah, if this succeeds, you're going to be, you stop and drop, stop, drop and roll. But without the roll. Wisdom 12, please. 13, 12 plus one. Bastard. That's the end of my go. Okay. Karl remains upright. McBenna, death saving throw, please. Okie dokie.
01:04:58
Speaker
Come on, 20. No, but it's an 18. It's a success. OK, that's a success. Carl, it's your turn. How far away is Ravi from me? You were five from Macbenna. I'm 15 feet away. Cool. Carl is going to take a step forward towards Macbenna on the floor. He's going to crouch down and he's going to say,
01:05:28
Speaker
Your time is over, old man. The depths will be your tomb. And I'm going to make a claw attack at his throat. OK, roll to hit. No, it's a success. OK, it's a success. I think, technically, I'm unconscious.
01:05:51
Speaker
And isn't it a crit? A cat rolls a crit to have advantage, and it's out of the hits creature with a critical hit if you tackle it within five feet. So it's with advantage, and it's a crit if it hits. My second roll was a 20. Not natural. Oh my god. Cool damage. Yeah, so for an auto crit.
01:06:11
Speaker
Well, it doesn't matter. It's two fails on a death save, isn't it? So taking damage. No, I thought it was only one fail. It's two death saves, I believe. Two death saves. Oh my god. Yes, it is. And with that, he's going to turn once more and sprint to the far end. How much damage do you do? One point of damage. Oh, wait. It's doubled, isn't it? Sorry. Two points of damage. Cool. Thank you. Oh my god.
01:06:39
Speaker
Okay. It's going to turn and sprint towards the end of the ship. Sprinting towards the ship. Okay, great. Thank you. You are by sprinting your movement. You're about 10 feet away now from the edge of this gargantuan ship. How far from McVenna? You? No, him. Carl.
01:07:00
Speaker
I have got 30 feet movement speed. I use five to get towards you. So I'm now 25 feet away from him. Yeah. Thank you. Thank you. That's important for what I wanted to do. I assume.
01:07:14
Speaker
It's your turn. Thank you. Okay, cool. Sorry, I'm just slightly shocked by what's happening here. Go for it. Go for it. Yes. He's fucking nails, mate. Right. So he was 40. I've 10 foot. So I'm taking my 10 foot of movement and I get down on one knee and put a hand down on McBenna and you received 20 points of healing.
01:07:42
Speaker
As I do a little bit of lay on hands, you see that one hand is on you, another hand is on my amulet and the amulet glows like a red and as that power kind of moves from my right hand that's clutching the amulet and you feel almost see this kind of red kind of power transfer into my left hand and that's when you start feeling the life come back into you as you receive 20 points of healing.
01:08:08
Speaker
But Drago's eyes this whole time has locked onto Carl. And before the end of my go, Drago is going to take the remaining... Oh my God, I can do it. I use 10 foot. You're 25 foot away from me, aren't you? Yes, that's right. I come within five feet of you and...
01:08:37
Speaker
Yeah, boy. I think I know what you're gonna do. Smite? Well, no, he's a Dragonborn man. He's using action to lay on hands. Yeah, lay on hands as an action. He's got a bonus action. He does, he does. But because I don't know what you're doing, I'm only using what's in my arsenal here.
01:09:05
Speaker
As I reach within five feet of you, I still locked onto you. You see my eyes kind of just shift up slightly, almost like the Undertaker when he gets into the ring, but not quite as demonic. And once again, the amulet glows as I've channeled Definity, Abduor enemy, as an action, bonus action, you can choose one creature within 60 foot. Well, I should have read that one before then.
01:09:34
Speaker
I just want to make sure that is correct. Bonus action. Channel Vow of Emininity, sorry. You can choose a creature you can see within 10 foot. There it is. So our Channel Definity, Vow of Emininity, you can choose a creature you can see within 10 feet and I gain advantage on each attack roll for one minute or interrupts to 0 HP or falls unconscious. And as my eyes refocus back on you, come, stay here. I can help you.
01:10:06
Speaker
Thank you, Drago. McBenna, it's going to take you half movement to get up, but it is your turn and you are conscious. I know. When Drago would have placed his hands on him, McBenna would have suddenly gone... As his lungs fill with the air that he thought he would never again take in. And he sort of rolls onto his front.
01:10:32
Speaker
I've seen Drago sort of keep staring away and he sort of blinks a few times to clear the fogginess from his eyes. Is the dagger I've thrown still embedded in Carl's heat? Or did you pull it out or what? No, Carl's not making an attempt to pull it out. So yes, it would be. It's still embedded. Cool. That's fine. That means I can't. Is there anything nearby that could be used as a weapon?
01:11:01
Speaker
You make a perception check as a free action. Thank you. Ah, shit. I'm still fuzzy. It's five. Yeah, you're still fuzzy as fuck. You can't find anything. Okay, I will get myself to my feet. I will use the other 15 feet of my movement to move towards
01:11:34
Speaker
Towards calm and then I will use hunters mark on him and mark him as my target Okay Excellent. Okay, so I'm making I'm making a beeline drug has just come up behind me Yes, I'm making a beeline for the edge of the ship with the new turn Do I see the lip of the Sun?
01:11:59
Speaker
above the horizon. Yes, dawn is now starting to crackle. In one deft movement Karl is going to spin
01:12:09
Speaker
blow into his lantern and cast fog cloud on his like on the floor right beneath him and instantly like a 40 foot diameter sphere, 20 foot radius sphere from that point encompasses him and Drago and he is going to sprint in the same direction with his mind to the end of the ship. Can I make it there in the turn?
01:12:32
Speaker
You can. Well, you've got enough to make it there and then some. OK. I'm really sorry, Ian. But you can't see me in the fog cloud. So there's no attack of opportunity for you with advantage.
01:12:48
Speaker
Drago is a brilliant choice because he's so blind in these situations.
Session Conclusion

So, yeah, beeline straight four and swan dive off the boat into the depths. Oh, swan diving goes well. You sexy bastard. OK, OK, OK, OK, OK. What happens is, over you go, Karl, and as you go over, the lantern for the first time just flickers.

And with you, it disappears before flicking back into focus. And now there is just the lantern as it falls into the ocean below. Eventually, the smoke clears on ship and Carl is no longer present. McBenna and Draghi.

As you take this in, the smoke dissipates under soul's glaring light as it starts to raise over the mountains of the verandian jungle. And processing all of this well, that's going to have to happen next time, as that's where we're going to leave this week's episode of The Fellowship of the Tabletop.

Well, you're so good. I'm going to put Carl Jeet, Cunt. In my list of marked villains. In my notes. The second character I've ever written down that my character hates. I was not sure if that was going to work. Jesus, if I'd passed some of those wisdom savings, I thought, I've got the dagger, I can throw it at you.

Yeah man, you nearly had me. I don't have that much health. No, I only had 24. But yeah, because con minus one. Yeah. Then the guys falls. Yeah, I tried some shit rolls. Shit rolls. I got very lucky. And I was very lucky as well that Ian wasn't able to run in and fuck me on turn one. Man, I wanted him to breath weapon use.

So many things I was trying to do. But no, I can talk at you. That's all I'm going to do. Reserved, reserved. You know, if you're a barbarian and you'd rage, you couldn't be charmed. But you know, yep, I know. And I had back back in beefy drago time, I had the ability to break charm on top, you know, but your judgment.

That was amazing. That was so good. That was so good. You can run Khajiit, but we will find you. We will kill you slowly. You can't hide. Do you want to see what a shave tobacco looks like? Going to find out.

And as we come to an end of this, I implore you all to run over to our Twitter pages and find out more about what's going on, to which I would say the Fellowship at the Tabletop is at Fellowship Table. I'm at iWorldA1. Renter Will, oh geez, like just at the King. Now what's yours? Complete bastard. Fellowship NPC PC.

A real Will can be found at Natural20Will. And a very well-handled situational DM can be found at Darren Page06. That was awesome, guys. Until next week.
