Introduction and Game Preview

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome to the Daily Newcastle Podcast. I'm your host, Kev, and we have an Ipswich preview happening right now because you've clicked on it. It says Ipswich preview. You'd be silly if you were expecting anything else.
00:00:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I'm joined by two lovely, lovely, lovely co-hosts. The first one, as we are both gentlemen, and hey, it's for OG3 again, so we'll know exactly who it is. But my first one is Joe, who is looking very glamorous tonight for anyone watching on YouTube.
00:00:35
Jo
Oh.
00:00:36
Iain
ah She's been in London for a few days.
00:00:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah okay You okay, Joe?
00:00:37
Iain
She's been down south.
00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ah, yeah, she's changed.
00:00:38
Jo
ah
00:00:39
Iain
shes She's picked up those fancy ways.
00:00:41
Jo
I'm a changed woman.
00:00:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Changed woman. She's all fancy. And again, regular listeners, and if you're not a regular listener, you now are because you've just heard us wonderful three voices. We have the smoothest man on the whole podcast. Ian's also joining us for this preview.
00:00:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Are you okay, Ian?
00:00:58
Iain
Yeah, I guess. Wondering how I'll ever live up to the yeah billing of the smoothest man on the podcast.
00:01:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
You are, you are the smoothest man of a podcast.
00:01:06
Iain
I don't know.
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I said in a previous episode, when I grew up, I want to be like Ian and it still stands.
00:01:07
Jo
It's done.
00:01:11
Jo
You did.
00:01:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Um,
00:01:11
Iain
I know. And I suggested you want to aspire to be a fireman instead. So there's a little internal struggle for you to deal with, Kev.
00:01:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah How do I pick which one?

Importance of the Ipswich Match for Champions League Aspirations

00:01:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
well Anyway, we have got to preview the Ipswich game coming up. ah Yesterday's episode was wonderful with Ian's crossover. So if you've listened to that, we're going to try and approach it from a slightly, slightly different aspect of just a Newcastle version this time.
00:01:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think in part one, I think we've got to start with how important this match is. I mean, it's it's people say it's Ipswich at home and all that stuff.
00:01:41
Iain
Amen.
00:01:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I mean, let's be honest, we have five cup finals. So... It's huge in terms of if we want to finish in the Champions League, we have to start winning games like this or not start winning games like this. We just have to win games like this.
00:01:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So I guess I want to just go around and see if you think it's as important. Is there less pressure? Do you feel nervous about it? and Or are we quietly confident? Or is that the worst thing we could be? Loads to unpick there.
00:02:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Joe, how important do you think it is? And are you worried at all about this game? Is it a potential banana skin or not?
00:02:15
Jo
isn't every game, but I'm not worried about it, I'll be honest. And I don't to think that if that is a curse, I think the team are good enough now. I know we had like a slip up against Villa. All right, bit of a major just slip up. um But we've got to remember what else we've done in all the previous games sort of thing. We've been...
00:02:31
Jo
Amazing. And you would like to think that they will pick back up. Eddie's back. So it might give the guys a bit of a boost. But obviously it's a game that Newcastle are like 100% expected to win.
00:02:41
Jo
i mean, i'd I'd be amazed if anyone expects Ipswich.
00:02:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:02:44
Jo
Look, we're not stupid enough to ever go into any game thinking that it's a surefire win at the same time. But yeah, I mean, we like you said, we've got five games left. Absolutely every five every one of those five games is as important as the other.
00:02:58
Jo
It's a three-point game.
00:02:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:02:59
Jo
doesn't matter who we're playing at the end of the day, is it really? um So, yeah, it's hugely important, but we've we've got to go into this game believing that not only can we win, but we can win quite convincingly. And, again, keep that goal difference up, which we've actually managed to really kind of pull back.
00:03:12
Jo
because I know we were we' work quite far behind a lot of teams, but our goal difference is right up
00:03:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
yep

Challenges Posed by Ipswich's Improved Form

00:03:16
Jo
there.
00:03:16
Jo
um But, yeah, come on. Okay.
00:03:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Yeah, I was going to come to Ian about the goal difference because it is, again, without being too disrespectful at Ipswich, you're thinking Ipswich at home, team who's already relegated.
00:03:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we've seen a lot of times, and I know Ian will go into this, but... We've seen teams in Newcastle have done ourselves where you're already relegated. You just relax. You play with a little bit of freedom.
00:03:36
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:03:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And all of a sudden, you think, how on earth are these already relegated? So, Ian, do you think it's a potential potential banana skin in that aspect are you pretty confident as well?
00:03:49
Iain
um oh there's lots to pick up there i'm not i i'm i'm not i don't think it's going to be a drubbing um for sure uh i heard a stat earlier today that um
00:03:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ooh.
00:04:02
Iain
You've got to go back to the 1973-74 season for the last time. Newcastle did the double over Ipswich. And we've had a few goes. We might not played them every year, but we've had read a few goes. We've never won home and away since 73.
00:04:17
Iain
seventy three um So that little stat is ringing in the back of my head when I think that Ipswich actually a much, much better team away from home than they are at home.
00:04:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:29
Iain
um And it's their last game. They went two up against Chelsea, and Chelsea got it back. But earlier in the season, when they're given no hope at all, they won at Tottenham.
00:04:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:04:43
Iain
They've got a draw <unk> got a draw at Villa. They won at Bournemouth. So for us to think that Ipswich are mugs would be completely wrong.
00:04:53
Iain
So I think it'll be, I'm confident we'll win, but I don't think it's going to be the drubbing. It's not Leicester or Southampton are turning up. I think we're going to have to play very well.

Newcastle's Remaining Fixtures and Strategic Importance

00:05:04
Iain
But I do think we'll come out on top.
00:05:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good
00:05:06
Iain
Just a slight aside, I feel that this game is the most critical because it's the next one. And if we can get our three ah three points here against the one that we ought to win, I think the other four games are fraught with danger, by the way.
00:05:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
good point.
00:05:23
Iain
The four that we have left after this. But if we can pick three points up here, It's then down to all the other teams to perform the way that they're expecting to. And what we've seen in previous weeks is that last week it was Arsenal who managed to, to sorry, Wednesday it was Arsenal who managed to draw at home to Crystal Palace.
00:05:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:05:43
Iain
We've seen Forrest beaten at home by Everton. Chelsea held by Ipswich a fortnight ago. So the teams that we're in a battle with are not on a run of wins in the way that we are, apart from Aston Villa.
00:06:01
Iain
So win against Ipswich at three o'clock on Saturday afternoon means we can sit back and look at the rest of the scores coming in, hopefully going, ha ha, gain two points on them, gain three points on them, because I think we might need them.
00:06:13
Iain
Because I don't think Brighton away is an easy game, Arsenal away certainly isn't.
00:06:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
yep
00:06:14
Jo
Yeah.
00:06:19
Iain
We've got a cup final, a real cup final for both teams when we play Chelsea at home. And then you've got bloody awkward Everton right at the end of the season.
00:06:26
Jo
Yeah.
00:06:26
Iain
It would just be like Jordan Pickford to inspire them to stop us getting Champions League.
00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:06:31
Iain
Those four games are horrible. This one we should win.
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we were going to talk about that in part three, but we'll just move forward and now. I was going to talk about how important this genuinely is in terms of the the race for Europe. And I think if we look at the other teams you're talking about there, Forrest is part of this weekday play on Thursday because obviously it's FA Cup kind of weekend, but they play Brentford at home.
00:06:50
Jo
Yeah.
00:06:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's not an easy game at all, I don't think. and And we've got Chelsea at home to Everton and we've got Everton to play.
00:06:57
Iain
no
00:07:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you've just mentioned there how, you know, it would be typical of Jordan Pickford, but I think I've said in a previous podcast where Everton under Moyes is a completely different team. I wish we were playing with Everton under Dyche. um even though we did lose to them a couple of times but they're still a lot worse they're still a lot worse under Daish than what we are under Moyes Moyes has got them really playing for each other um it's a little bit better to watch even when Everton are on TV I actually don't just not watch it now because it used to be so boring so again Chelsea could potentially drop points Forest could drop points as well so it's a case of you're right get get our game done
00:07:15
Jo
yeah
00:07:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Funnily enough, actually, Chelsea play at 12.30, so we'll know what that score is by the time we go into the Ipswich game. Do we think that has any impact? you know if Chelsea have lost that? and Do you think that then motivates us more, or do you think it just has zero impact at all?
00:07:48
Jo
I think that one's a strange one.
00:07:49
Iain
I think they're already in their match predictions.
00:07:50
Jo
Sorry.
00:07:51
Iain
They're already in their match preparation at that point, aren't they?
00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:54
Jo
Yeah.
00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:07:55
Iain
So it'll be noted for us in the crowd, we'll be thrilled to bits if Chelsea of have have been beaten.
00:07:59
Jo
Yeah.
00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Drop points.
00:08:03
Jo
Yeah.
00:08:03
Iain
um We'll be absolutely chuffed working it out, thinking, well, we've just got to beat Chelsea and we're definitely finishing ahead of them. So it's really just a race for the top six now.
00:08:10
Jo
True.
00:08:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah because then we've got Chelsea at home as well.
00:08:12
Iain
and
00:08:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, if they drop points to Everton, that'll be a big boost.
00:08:13
Iain
Yeah, I know, I know.
00:08:14
Jo
Yeah.
00:08:17
Jo
Huge.
00:08:18
Iain
Yeah, but I'm still holding out to get paid out on his finishing second as well. So who have Arsenal got?
00:08:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Arsenal have got... The next game they play it is Bournemouth at home.
00:08:28
Iain
I think it's Crystal Palace.
00:08:31
Jo
I've got to be honest.
00:08:32
Iain
Bournemouth, you see.
00:08:32
Jo
I've looked at it. Have you guys looked at all the pictures about who's got who?
00:08:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's the week after, that's week after.
00:08:36
Jo
Obviously, I take it you have.
00:08:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we've got Brighton away when we play Bournemouth at home. so
00:08:41
Jo
I've given up on second. I'm not going to lie in. Third's my prediction. Well, third was my prediction, but I'm i'm totally sticking with it. I totally went along with the ride and I loved this whole thing behind the second thing, but I just can't see Arsenal dropping the required points for us to get second.
00:08:56
Jo
I mean, please, God, prove me wrong.
00:08:56
Iain
How far behind are we?
00:08:58
Jo
Hang on.
00:08:59
Iain
We're

Arsenal's Fixtures and Newcastle's Chance for Second Place

00:09:00
Iain
seven points behind them, right?
00:09:00
Jo
Let me bring it up.
00:09:03
Iain
We're seven points behind them.
00:09:04
Jo
Eight.
00:09:04
Iain
and
00:09:04
Jo
Eight.
00:09:06
Iain
Eight. Doesn't matter. Eight.
00:09:08
Jo
And they've got a far superior goal difference, by the way.
00:09:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
You could have told Ian 10 there.
00:09:11
Iain
Eight.
00:09:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's going to say it doesn't matter.
00:09:12
Jo
I know.
00:09:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
He wants to come off.
00:09:13
Iain
Lose it.
00:09:13
Jo
He's going to just argue, doesn't he?
00:09:14
Iain
Lose it. No, eight points. It's eight points, right? So we lose it.
00:09:18
Jo
So three wins.
00:09:20
Iain
We beat them.
00:09:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
To be fair, they've got Bournemouth, Bournemouth, Liverpool, us.
00:09:21
Iain
That's one of the losses. They've got to lose it. Liverpool. Liverpool.
00:09:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bournemouth, Liverpool, us.
00:09:28
Iain
Bournemouth do them.
00:09:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then they... Why can't i find the game over the last day of season?
00:09:31
Jo
Liverpool have won it by then, which is a shame.
00:09:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've never played Southampton, so we're definitely going to beat Southampton. So Bournemouth, Liverpool, us and Southampton is their last four games.
00:09:36
Jo
Yeah.
00:09:38
Jo
They've got to lose three times. Arsenal have only lost three times all season.
00:09:41
Iain
There's another game. they've got They've got another game. They don't have to lose three times.
00:09:43
Jo
Ian, think about it.
00:09:44
Iain
They've got to lose twice.
00:09:45
Jo
They
00:09:45
Iain
They've got to lose twice against us at Liverpool.
00:09:47
Jo
They're eight points ahead of us!
00:09:49
Iain
They've got to lose twice.
00:09:49
Jo
They've got to lose. We have the nine.
00:09:52
Iain
Yeah, they've got to lose twice, us and Liverpool.
00:09:53
Jo
So...
00:09:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's in, we'll beat them.
00:09:55
Iain
And then they've got to have another couple of draws.
00:09:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bournemouth.
00:09:59
Iain
who They've got another game.
00:10:00
Jo
I mean, we're going to beat them. That's fine.
00:10:02
Iain
They've got another game, Kev, because they've got five left, not four. So they're going to draw against Bournemouth, draw against, I think it's Palace.
00:10:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
but me Let me click on Arsenal. I can't believe I'm clicking on Arsenal.
00:10:09
Iain
I think they're away at Palace.
00:10:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've just played Palace.
00:10:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, they've got PSG next, then we've got Bournemouth, Liverpool, Newcastle, Southampton,
00:10:16
Iain
Did they just draw with Palace?
00:10:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
and that's it.
00:10:26
Iain
Have they played 34 games?
00:10:27
Jo
They've only got four left.
00:10:29
Iain
Yes. They've played 34 games because they played Palace on Wednesday and only drew.
00:10:33
Jo
Yeah.
00:10:36
Iain
So there's one of the draws I'm after.
00:10:38
Jo
Yeah. So what you're saying is when we beat Ipswich, yeah, we'll only be four points.
00:10:39
Iain
So, yeah. Okay.
00:10:46
Iain
When we beat Ipswich, yes.
00:10:46
Jo
We'll only be five points behind them. Sorry. So we'll only be five points behind them when there's only four games left.
00:10:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is... Right. who
00:10:51
Iain
We're behind five points behind them and then we'll beat them and Liverpool beat them and that'll mean that we are we win our games, we finish a point ahead of them.
00:10:58
Jo
We'll be second.
00:10:59
Iain
So second is still on.
00:11:00
Jo
and love that. one yeah I mean, it's technically still on, yeah.
00:11:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ian's a second is still on.
00:11:03
Iain
Trust me. That doesn't even count for Bournemouth doing them.
00:11:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway.
00:11:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Imagine of thought if Bournemouth win, by the way, Ian is going to be like well and truly good in for second, which I love the ambition.
00:11:14
Jo
I mean, I want you to be right, obviously. i'm just saying.
00:11:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:17
Jo
I just think it'll be third.
00:11:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, we'll leave
00:11:18
Iain
I think it's still

Lineup Speculations and Injury Concerns

00:11:19
Iain
on. think it's still on.
00:11:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll leave part one because we haven't even talked about lineups or their lineup or our lineup or Danger Men or Eddie Howe being back or the fact it's a Sir Bobby Robson derby.
00:11:20
Jo
it's still on. Who needs lineups? We're fine.
00:11:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
None of that's even been mentioned in part one's done.
00:11:29
Jo
Oh, that's so much to talk about.
00:11:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we're going to hear from, in Ian's words, Cristiano Ronaldo's mob for our first sponsor. And then we'll be back to talk all things about the Ipswich game.
00:12:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Perfecto. Lovely. um I also like at the start of an advert when it says your body is unique, Ian nods along. He's like, yeah, my body is unique.
00:12:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
100% it is.
00:12:26
Iain
bloody is.
00:12:27
Iain
but go
00:12:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
i
00:12:29
Iain
Nobody's destroyed their body in the ways that I've destroyed my body, I'll tell you.
00:12:29
Jo
Special. Mm-hmm.
00:12:33
Iain
yeah
00:12:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a whole other podcast. That's an after dark podcast to go into that one.
00:12:37
Iain
Ha ha.
00:12:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Anyway, straight back to Ipswich then. So let's talk about lineups. Newcastle have been unchanged for... Countless matches now. and Eddie Howe is back. I don't think Eddie would have liked what he saw against Villa because we know he's a perfectionist.
00:12:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And as Joe mentioned before, he is officially back. Hallelujah. If I had sound effect, oh my God, I'd be playing everything. um But anyway, he's back. Do we think he's going to make any changes or is he going to say, look, Villa was a blip.
00:13:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're still going unchanged. Does that mean Gordon's still benched? and I've had a brief chat with Ian before we came on here and he's got some actually pretty interesting ideas. So I'm going to go Joe first, then I'll come to Ian to see if Joe agrees with Ian.
00:13:16
Iain
Thank you.
00:13:19
Jo
All right, cool. Yeah, because I've got no idea what you guys were talking about. So umm um personally, and this is nothing against Bonds, um but I'd bring Gordon back in for Bonds. Sure.
00:13:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
He got an assist.
00:13:31
Jo
Just listen to where I'm going from here.
00:13:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, boss. Yes, boss.
00:13:35
Jo
Yes, boss. and again I just would. um I don't think there's anything wrong with making changes. I appreciate, you know, don't spoil a winning formula. However, we didn't win the last game. that's kind out of the window anyway, isn't it?
00:13:46
Jo
um The A's reports obviously Cher has got a feeling in his hamstring. Was exactly what I read. little feeling in his hamstring.
00:13:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's plenty of people who would help Fabian Shaw with a little feeling.
00:13:55
Jo
Anyway. Anyway. I'm not going to say what I sent to Nick in the on WhatsApp once I read that, but you know yes you guys can figure it out.
00:13:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
its how You wouldn't be short of offers. Yeah.
00:14:04
Jo
um So anyway, but yeah, so there's a chance that he won't play, and then there's talk of Botman being back as well, so I think that's a bit up in the air as to what happened, but then obviously you've got Kraft waiting in the wings anyway, even if Botman wasn't back, because really, even if Botman is back, surely he's not just going to come straight in anyways.
00:14:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:14:06
Iain
Thank you.
00:14:20
Jo
You know, he's got to break him in a little bit easy um not ruin him like we did the last time apparently after he's massively off um but yeah in in essence no I don't really see any other changes um I don't see any reason why there should be and unless you guys know something I don't know I don't know of any other injuries or issues anyway with any of the other players so yeah that's my little bit
00:14:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think i think you've you've pretty much got the potential injuries and stuff bang on and the return of Botman again is a potential thing. I love now that Newcastle, whether house around or not, keep the cards so close to the chest of their stuff.
00:14:54
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:14:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
It used to get leaked all over the time under the previous manager about exactly who was ready and even now when the post for training shots are very careful not to include certain players who are back or close.
00:14:55
Iain
Thank you.
00:15:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I love that about the club at the minute. Complete housery. I'm not going to say a first because don't want to get in trouble. and But Ian, what are your thoughts on how we could potentially line up against Ipswich? Do you fancy any changes or do you think you will make any?
00:15:18
Iain
I, first of all, on reflection, don't think that we played that badly against Villa. I don't think we were tired. I think we were battling really, really hard, backs to the wall.
00:15:26
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:15:28
Iain
We had to because Villa was so bloody good. And actually, we held them at 1-0 for the first hour, despite being outplayed for and out-tacticked for that game, until they brought two or three super subs on, when we then let three goals in in six minutes, and the game was gone then.
00:15:47
Iain
Tindall started taking players off to rest them. I don't think you can say we were tired. I think we were just beaten by a team that was more on it on Saturday. So given that, probably start the same team.
00:16:01
Iain
However, it may be that you want to just give everyone a little bit of a shake-up that you won't pick them even if they lose 4-1. My suggestion was that I wouldn't drop Barnes, but I want to bring Gordon in So I might let Murph sit on the bench to be coming on either left or right, depending on who's played the best between Gordon and Barnes down the right.
00:16:28
Iain
And to accommodate Barnes down the right, I might shift Tino back from left to right. You could just play Trippier on the left or let Matt Target have a bit of run out and keep Some good changes on the bench, just in case we haven't been able to steamroller these guys.
00:16:48
Iain
But my gut feel is they'll start with the same 11 because they weren't awful on Saturday. um But if you wanted to switch it up, we've got players who you could switch it up for.
00:16:59
Iain
I'd love to see Miley get more time.
00:17:02
Jo
Yeah.
00:17:02
Iain
I don't think we've used him anywhere near enough.
00:17:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's been linked with little bit, hasn't he?
00:17:04
Iain
I'd like to see... I hope that's just talk.
00:17:07
Jo
Yeah.
00:17:08
Iain
I hope that's just talk.
00:17:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:10
Jo
um I'm leaving that as talk personally, yeah.
00:17:10
Iain
That'd be like sending him in him and Anderson going. like It's even more criminal than letting Elliot Anderson go to let Lewis Midey go. But timm I wouldn't mind Joe Willock starting on the left and maybe have Joe Linton sitting on the bench to come on in the second half.
00:17:18
Jo
Hmm.
00:17:27
Iain
I'm thinking about having a stronger bench so that we can go for the full 90 minutes if we need to.
00:17:27
Jo
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:17:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. I actually like that idea. I like the fact of giving players, especially Willock, an opportunity to come in and play well. Because we know that when he's on it and he plays regularly, he's such a good player. So underrated, I think, especially by other clubs who probably don't see him week in and week out. So I've got no problem the likes of Willock getting game time.
00:17:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just think that that discussion about the wingers... I just find that, I think Barnes is in the best form he's been in personally since he joined the club.
00:18:00
Iain
Mmm. Can't leave him out.
00:18:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:18:01
Jo
Yeah.
00:18:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it would be very harsh to drop him and even against Villarie got an assist. And I also think, Murphy, I'm all right, I completely see what Ian's saying about maybe just giving him bit of time, having him off the bench. But I think when he's in the red hot form, he's in, you've just got to keep saying go up there and do what you need to do. So personally, I would stick with same wingers and I would have Gordon on the bench. And like you used to, I think it probably will be unchanged.
00:18:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
and but that's the only thing in terms of me personally I would definitely keep the two wings the rest of it I can understand maybe giving Joel Linton a rest bringing Willigan I wouldn't even mind seeing Mighty coming in but then I mean imagine the fans if you drop Bruno or Tonali and we'll go 1-0 down I wouldn't want to experience that so that's again probably something which weighs heavily um but the other thing I want to talk about before we end part two because we'll go to Ipswich I'll come to Ian in a second go on Ian go do it now
00:18:24
Jo
yeah
00:18:47
Iain
ah Well, I was going to ask you a question. What would you do if Sha is... Well, if Sha's got a tweaky hamstring and you don't want to lose him for the last four, because this is our gimme, isn't it?
00:18:56
Jo
Yeah, we've got be careful there.
00:18:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Definitely, definitely pay Kraft.
00:18:58
Jo
Well, it's got be craft, isn't it?
00:18:59
Iain
How would you switch that around?
00:19:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd just bring Kraft in his right centre-half.
00:19:01
Iain
You'd put Kraft, yeah.
00:19:02
Jo
Yeah, it's craft, yeah.
00:19:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kraft is right centre-half, Burn is left centre-half, and I would stick with Tino left, Trippier right.
00:19:03
Iain
Yeah.
00:19:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But was talk of Trippier as well being a little bit, again, he's groin, he's hamstring, he has been holding it for the last couple of games.
00:19:10
Jo
Yeah.
00:19:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that would then mean, sure, Trippier is going to have to play it or you bring Botman straight back in, which is another thing where you think,
00:19:23
Jo
To risk.
00:19:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's already made a glass. Can you really bring Botman in for Ipswich at home? But there's nobody else. He's starting to then look very, very thin. You could play Murphy right back. He's done it before as a wing-back if you really have to and have Kraft as centre-half.
00:19:34
Jo
Hmm.
00:19:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
But again, if for Murphy's in, why would you want to move him out of that position?
00:19:40
Iain
Have we not got a wonder kid in the under-21s?
00:19:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Leo Shahar.
00:19:43
Iain
Is it Sahar?
00:19:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Leo Shahar looks like a...
00:19:45
Iain
Yeah.
00:19:46
Jo
o
00:19:46
Iain
Why not? if he's If he's going to play in the Premier League, he wants to be playing at home against a relegated side. Why not?
00:19:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good point. good point.
00:19:53
Iain
Why not let him have a go?
00:19:53
Jo
good Good test from you.
00:19:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I still think it's a it's a brave move, wasn't it, when we're talking about five cup finals, I think you want experience in there, but you're right, again, it would be a great call.
00:20:02
Iain
But he's...
00:20:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Look what my United have done.
00:20:02
Iain
Yeah.
00:20:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
My United have brought in a lot of youngsters. and I think it's Obi, what's the guy left back, he played against us, Amas, looks really good, and there's another lad, number 55's coming, in I forgot his name, but he looks amazing as well, so you're right, you could just bring in someone like Leo Shahar and all of a sudden, you're thinking, well, we don't need to sign a back-up right back if Trippier goes, we've got this young lad.
00:20:05
Iain
Yeah.
00:20:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
so Lots of options, but i personally think it'll be unchanged if everyone's fit. But there is question marks, isn't there, over Trippier and Shaw? What do you do then? Is it Botman and Kraft? Or do you play Kraft centre-half and play Trippier if he's fit?
00:20:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or you could bring Target in. You could move Tino right-back and put Target left-back. So we are a very versatile squad.
00:20:40
Jo
Yeah,
00:20:40
Iain
You could bring Crafty to move Byrne to left back if Sha's okay.
00:20:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:20:48
Jo
I suppose.
00:20:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Could do. Could do. But Bern did a great job for us when we finished fourth. We are a very versatile squad.
00:20:52
Jo
Fantastic.
00:20:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
think that's what helps us and so much. of it
00:20:55
Jo
Yeah.
00:20:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
You could bring Target in and put Tino right back. You could put Kraft centre-half or you could put Kraft right back and bring Botman in. It's loads of options. But I think it'll be unchanged, won't it? I think.
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:21:07
Iain
I think Bottman will be on the bench, by the way, and I think he will get the last 20 minutes.
00:21:10
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:21:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Start easing him in.
00:21:11
Iain
Because I think they're going to have but i have to test him, because if because if he gets his 20 minutes there and he can do half an hour at Brighton, he's bloody fit for that Arsenal game.
00:21:11
Jo
Yeah.
00:21:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:21:17
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:21:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, definitely.
00:21:22
Jo
Yeah.
00:21:22
Iain
And that's key, isn't it?
00:21:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, could go five at the back again because I don't think I'd drop... oh I mean, Villa was a bit of a one-off but I wouldn't drop Shaw or Burn at the minute, really.
00:21:32
Jo
no
00:21:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Since the cup it would have been amazing so it would have to be five at the back if Bottoms come in.
00:21:33
Iain
Oh.
00:21:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nice problems to have. Anyway, i'm going to squeeze one more question in before we go to part three and we'll talk about Ipswich. m How's obviously back. We're all massive fans of How on this podcast. I think he's amazing. Ian said previously he's the elite manager and Joe can't think of anybody else ever in charge.
00:21:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do we think with How being back, we are now going to have at least more than one plan? Because I thought Villa, I didn't think we were terrible, but we had one way to play, battle, fight, press.
00:22:05
Jo
yeah
00:22:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then when it didn't work, it was like, well, would How have changed it? Or am I just looking too much into that? How big is it having Howell back? I know that seems like a silly question or obvious answer of, yeah, it's massive. But do you think it is going to be so, so important to miss running?

Impact of Eddie Howe's Return on Team Dynamics

00:22:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or do you think actually for a well-oiled machine now, it's not going to make a huge difference?
00:22:26
Iain
Thank you.
00:22:26
Jo
It's got to be hugely important, hasn't it, regardless? Yeah, we're a well-oiled machine. Absolutely agree with that, by the way. And Tyndall did a great job, you know, and they were calling for manager of the month, but which I actually love.
00:22:37
Jo
And bless him.
00:22:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
and 5-0.
00:22:39
Jo
Oh, I know. I know. and but even if he had to beat Villa as well, he wasn't going to get it, was he? Let's get real. But we would have wanted him to get it. um But, yeah, I mean, he's talked about the fact that I think they said, you know, they've worked together for, what, like 17 years or something crazy like
00:22:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is it just a case of they know what each other are going to anyway? So as much as he's a miss, of course Eddie Howe's a miss.
00:22:56
Jo
But, yeah...
00:22:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, my God, of course he is. But is it as big as what we think? Oh, yeah.
00:23:01
Jo
But are they better together is more my point. Like, Tindall, to me, and were we're all kind of picked up on it, he did look at times a little bit lost with his sidekick. It was like, where's my Batman to me to my robin to me being and Robin type of thing.
00:23:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:13
Jo
And it's like, it's I don't know, maybe he wasn't even operating at his peak because he was just missing that extra piece of him.
00:23:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good point. Good point.
00:23:20
Jo
So that's why I think they're so important to each other.
00:23:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:22
Jo
And if I'm honest, if Tindall was out, and I know he was the main man...
00:23:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good point.
00:23:24
Jo
man But I bet if Howe was on that sideline on his own, Tyndall wasn't there, it would still have that kind of... They need each other almost. They're just...
00:23:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:32
Jo
They are. They're a perfect pair. So, yeah, I think it's hugely important because of that.
00:23:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you agree, Ian?
00:23:38
Iain
and Well, I was going to make the point, I think Tyndall said, didn't he, they've been together for 17 years and there's only twice they've not stood next to each other on the touchline. So I do think that they'll know each other's tactics inside out.
00:23:46
Jo
Yeah.
00:23:52
Iain
Whether he didn't change it because he was going to have to make that decision all on his own, or Graeme Jones was saying, no, no, you can't do that. Whereas him and Howe would have agreed that we'd be able to change it against Villa.
00:24:04
Iain
But I don't know how he would change it against Villa with the players we've got. Because,
00:24:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know if it would just be more more of a counter a low block or ah a maybe put five at the back and try and catch them something a little bit different that's all
00:24:13
Iain
yeah, but you'd be conceding ground to Asensio and Tielemans and players who were really super confident and bang on form.
00:24:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah yeah fair
00:24:25
Iain
I just think we did well to hold them for an hour, to be honest, because that was the villa that was all over Paris Saint-Germain that we played.
00:24:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
but Yeah.
00:24:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:35
Iain
And I don't know if you watched the the City game, but they were quite unlucky to not hold City at the very least.
00:24:41
Iain
They could have beat City.
00:24:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Yeah.
00:24:43
Iain
And at the fourth minute of injury time, City scabbed a winner. But I think that was better for us in the long run in terms of our Champions League qualifications.
00:24:52
Jo
Hmm.
00:24:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, I agree. I agree. I mean, I can't wait to see Eddie back, so I'm buzzing. I'm buzzing to see him again. One more advert, as everyone knows, regular listeners will know, more advert. Zencast, if this one's recorded, we're going all posh, and then we'll be back for part three.
00:25:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if anyone didn't know, that was Jo. She's just back from London, like Ian said. That's her new accent now. That's how she sounds.
00:25:37
Jo
Can you imagine?
00:25:37
Iain
I know. she calls him she She calls him Zencaster well.
00:25:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, she's a proper southerner.
00:25:42
Iain
know if you saw that.
00:25:43
Jo
Then cost don't you know?
00:25:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Zencasta. Yes, Zencasta.
00:25:44
Iain
Zencaster.
00:25:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
We are on Zencasta.
00:25:46
Jo
my cup of tea.
00:25:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh
00:25:47
Jo
no
00:25:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Anyway, let's not upset any Southern Newcastle fans because we don't want to do that. But I'm sure they would agree with us anyway. um Anyway, part three, let's have a little brief look at

Ipswich's Key Players and Tactical Threats

00:25:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ipswich. and We haven't had a great season, obviously relegated pretty much.
00:26:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It's a case of we do have a couple of good players. I know De Lapp's impressed this season and is getting talked about in terms of a move to stay in the Premier League when they go down.
00:26:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So the lab's been talked about.
00:26:15
Iain
Thank you.
00:26:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know Leif Davis, who's actually not not in this game, um is a Newcastle fan and loves playing. He said his dream was to play St James' part the season.
00:26:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Unlucky. Not going to happen. Poo a lad. um Unless he gets a transfer to us next season. If he wants to come and be back up to Lewis Hall, thats he's more than welcome. But we do have some players. i know Hutchinson as well has had a half-decent season.
00:26:23
Jo
ah
00:26:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So again, couple of players who... You guys think we should be worried about him? going to come to Ian first because he's already done the crossover and then Joe can hopefully just agree with him.
00:26:44
Iain
Well, I i asked ah Rob last night about DeLapp. They're sure he's gone. He's got 30 million buyout clause, relegation clause, which means that they've discussed before he started playing for them that if they got relegated, he was moving on.
00:26:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Good season.
00:27:02
Iain
um And he hasn't started the last two games. Instead of doing his normal 80, 85 minutes, as he has done for the rest of the Premier League, he's done the last 10 in each of the last two games.
00:27:06
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:27:13
Iain
So, They yeah don't know if that's him saying he doesn't want a play so he doesn't get injured and he can get his move in the summer. Or if this is what the Ipswich boys think.
00:27:26
Iain
There's some sort of, he scored, it I think he scored 18 goals. There's some sort of bonus that will get paid out if he scores more than 20 goals. So they're just not going to play him so he can get the last two goals and then move on.
00:27:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was thinking a little bit more innocent. Are Ipswich not just planning for life without them?
00:27:37
Jo
True.
00:27:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's what I thought, but yeah.
00:27:41
Jo
true
00:27:41
Iain
Well, theyve said He said, and this is the guy I'm going to flag up because you've not mentioned him, they had a very good forward, scored a lot of goals in their promotion from League One and through to Christmas in the Championship.
00:27:54
Iain
A fella called George Hurst, who got a really bad really bad injury at the Christmas, and they got promoted.
00:27:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ah, yeah.
00:28:01
Iain
He's come back in, he's probably going to be the main man next year, so Rob reckons that he's he's pretty good. He gave the Arsenal, I know they lost four milk But he did give the two Arsenal centre-halves bit of a run-around glass last week.
00:28:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:17
Iain
So he sounds as if he's going to be able to handle himself. So I think we might have to watch him. other guy I liked on their side was Philogene, who I think they got from Villa. um But he's injured, so he can't play.
00:28:31
Iain
Leif Davis has been touted as a bit higher level than relegated Premier League. He got sent off, so he can't play.
00:28:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:28:39
Iain
So I think they're... um In fact, his replacement, Connor somebody, forgotten the name of him, at left back is also injured.
00:28:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Townsend, Connor Townsend?
00:28:49
Iain
So, Connor Townsend then. Yeah, so ah left back is particularly weak, apparently.
00:28:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:28:59
Iain
His suggestion was that they would go with three centre halves and push another centre half into left back, which is how they're lined up against Arsenal. And obviously Arsenal didn't find that too difficult to get past last week. They won 4-0, didn't they?
00:29:13
Iain
So maybe that's another team with a really, really low block.
00:29:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:29:18
Iain
Maybe that's another team like Brighton who could just soak it all up. We could have 21 shots and not score. They can have one touch in the box and beat us 1-0. That's what my fear was when I was talking about it in part one.
00:29:30
Jo
it
00:29:32
Iain
But and I don't think we'll do that. I think our confidence is still there. We'll beat them.
00:29:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah. I mean, yeah Joe, anybody else? There's one player I've got in mind, but hasn't been mentioned yet.
00:29:45
Jo
No, I mean, from what he said, I mean, Leif Davis and DeLapp were the only two that were, well, DeLapp was the main concern, but like you said, what game they're playing there, I don't know. It could be anything about what you guys have just said.
00:29:56
Jo
was kind of nodding along each part because it literally could be the player saying that he doesn't want to risk it and get injured.
00:30:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:30:02
Jo
It could be a switch just saying, right, well, we'll not play it. Like you've said, bang on. Could be just preparing for life after him and giving the likes of that Hurst guy who I'm not going lie, i don't know anything about him. um But if he's going to be the main man...
00:30:13
Jo
then it's only right, really, that he does get some game time and just, you know, playing with players that he's going to be... Well, I'm saying that, count on the fact that the rest of them all stay as well for next season. I wouldn't have a clue, really. um Obviously, there's been talk of a couple of them, but De Laap's, like, pretty much gone, isn't it? mean, it's just who he goes to, really, is the kind of question there.
00:30:31
Jo
But, come on, it's it's hard to say that you're scared of anyone on a team that have been so poor all season, really. Yeah. So again, not you know really make us sound awful, but kind of.
00:30:45
Jo
um No, i'm not I'm not really scared of any of them. And if they've got a weakness on the left, Murphy's going to have a field day. And I'm all in for that. So just that.
00:30:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
verly Fair play, fair play. and The only other one I was kind of thinking of was um Jack Clark, who used to play for Sunderland, didn't he?
00:30:56
Iain
oh
00:31:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ex-Macham. So he'll be, I think he'll be pretty motivated to do something at St James' Park and since he was a youngster.
00:31:03
Jo
Ah, forgot about him.
00:31:04
Iain
oh yeah
00:31:08
Jo
Mm-hmm. Like kick us and hurt us.
00:31:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was a youngster at Sunderland. um So he'll have some mates, I'm sure, who are probably Newcastle fans and Sunderland fans who he'll have a little bit extra motivation to go to. I think that's about it. I used to like Sammy Schmoddix as well, but I think he's injured.
00:31:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think he was great at Blackburn and i thought Ipswich would be a good move, but i know he's had some injuries, so he's clearly not fit because he hasn't played last couple of games. Right. Part three. Last thing we've got to do.
00:31:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've talked about the game, talked about Newcastle's line-up, Ipswich line-up, um how important this could be. It's our second cup final of five because we won our last one. Hey, remember that?
00:31:45
Jo
who
00:31:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
We won a cup this season. Get in. and
00:31:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do we think our predictions are going to be? and Me and Ian are gentlemen, so we'll go Joe first and then we'll go ian i and then I'll go
00:31:48
Iain
Thank you.

Game Predictions and Expectations

00:31:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
last. Joe, prediction, Newcastle-Ipswich, St.
00:31:55
Jo
Cool.
00:31:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
James' Park, what's it going to be? Ooh, comfortable.
00:31:59
Jo
3-0. Nice solid 3-0.
00:32:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow.
00:32:02
Jo
Comfortable.
00:32:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:32:03
Jo
Come on, we've got to think that way.
00:32:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Any scorers you want to chuck in?
00:32:07
Jo
I think Murfino's going to get one because, you know, just because I want to get that extra excited about it.
00:32:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow. Mirfaldo. Hmm.
00:32:12
Jo
um It's so cliche to be like, Isaac, Isaac, first goal. But, you know, I'm not saying Isaac.
00:32:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, he has scored 25 in all competitions or something.
00:32:20
Jo
i and know You know, just when he fancies, though, I'd say he just turns up when he wants.
00:32:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Probably going to score.
00:32:24
Jo
No, I'm messing, obviously.
00:32:24
Iain
including including
00:32:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:32:26
Iain
Including a hat-trick against Ipswich away from home.
00:32:29
Jo
I know, I'm messing, obviously.
00:32:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good point.
00:32:30
Iain
There you go.
00:32:31
Jo
But, yeah, I mean...
00:32:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:32:31
Iain
I can confidently predict that we won't take the lead quite as quickly as we did when we played them at Portman Road. Because I think that was timed at 25 seconds, wasn't it?
00:32:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Rapido.
00:32:39
Jo
Well, it's hard to beat, but challenge accepted maybe, yeah.
00:32:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm. We can try. good if we are. Yeah. So, three ni Joe. Ian, are you going with a regular 3-1 or... Mm-hmm.
00:32:51
Iain
I am... I was i absolutely delighted to be there that night when we put five past Crystal Palace, four up at a half-time. What a game that was. Part of me is thinking, well, we can resume that one, two, three, four, five sequence, so we put six past Ipswich.
00:33:10
Iain
And on a good day, we easily could do that. But I'm going to stick with my 3-1.
00:33:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nice.
00:33:17
Iain
Rob was quite enthusiastic about what a good player this Hurst is, so let's have him scoring for Ipswich. I think... I think Izak will score, Murphy can score, and then but whoever's playing the best out of Barnes or Gordon will get the third.
00:33:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah like to see Barnes continue his good form. and
00:33:37
Iain
Yeah.
00:33:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to go um' going to go a little bit mental. I think... because we are a wounded animal. We're going to score four. And I think the last one will be scored by...
00:33:46
Jo
Nice.
00:33:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
who do I think is going to be scored by? Callum Wilson.
00:33:52
Jo
Bend.
00:33:53
Iain
I was going to say Calamunst.
00:33:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah, yeah. and ah But I do also think that it will be 4-2. I think Ipswich will score two. I think we're very attacking. I thought we were quite good against Chelsea. I know they had 10 men on the last one. So yeah, it's a case of that. I'm going to go for 4-2 Newcastle.
00:34:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we're all going wins. Let's hope we do win. um And let's hope it's a successful ah second cup final because we won our last one. I'm going to get that in as much as I possibly can because I'm still a high from it.
00:34:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But apart from that, you'll hear from us on Monday as we review our 4-2 win over Ipswich.
00:34:28
Iain
and but Also, just before you go, Kev, you haven't gone yet, have you? yeah
00:34:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nope.
00:34:32
Iain
Can we just kind but just say, come on, Everton, against Chelsea?
00:34:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of it, but I do want him to beat Chelsea. Of course I do.
00:34:41
Jo
Just temporary fans.
00:34:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes. Come on every other team playing anybody in the top seven.
00:34:43
Iain
ah
00:34:44
Jo
Come on. Come on, any anyone that helps us.
00:34:45
Iain
Yeah, absolutely, that's it.
00:34:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:34:47
Jo
We'll leave it at that.
00:34:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Come on every other team playing in the top seven and that's how we're going to end this one.
00:34:48
Iain
That's it.
00:34:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Lovely stuff. Thanks for listening and you'll hear from us on Monday.
