Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Newcastle. It's Wildcard Wednesday. No care, unfortunately. He's dropped out right at the last minute and thrown all our lovely plans
00:00:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
into the bin with the rest of it all.
00:00:25
Michael
Damn you.
00:00:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Fortunately, um who wasn't just going to do it with Kev. I do still have one black and white partner with me, which is Michael. Hello, Michael. How are you?
00:00:37
Michael
Hello, Ian. I'm doing very well. Thank you very much, Matt. How about you?
00:00:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm all right. I'm disappointed that having actually got one of these quotation marks hilarious, supposedly wildcard Wednesdays to be in charge of because they always miss me out.
00:00:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Joe was just Pogged it for her, Kev and Nicola, to go and be mental.
00:01:00
Michael
100%.
00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I thought I had a...
00:01:00
Michael
There's a reason she does the schedule.
00:01:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I had a fabulously different thing for us to do, which you know, I've tortured you with it for a week or two.
00:01:07
Michael
You did?
00:01:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and And I know you'd even done some research to not appear to be a complete buffoon anymore.
00:01:17
Michael
died, yes?
00:01:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
and and And you would have done. and Unfortunately, Kev dropping out just 10 minutes before we're about to record means we're not going to do that. I'm going to save that up for later on. And instead, I think it's only right, given that we've got a massive game tomorrow night against Liverpool, that we just have a little bit of a look at that and how we feel going into it.
00:01:36
Michael
yeah
00:01:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And then for the second part of the the podcast, I am of a mind, because I've taken consolation, certainly in that Manchester City game, that our rivals, a lot of our rivals chasing these Champions League places,
00:01:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
are also in a real string of tough games and are dropping points left, right and centre.
00:02:00
Michael
Absolutely, yeah.
00:02:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the same thing is the case in this chunk of games we've got this this midweek. we're going to have a little bit of a look at each of those and see if actually it doesn't matter whether we win or lose or draw against Liverpool because we will not really fall behind or gain points on anybody else given that there's still 10, 12 games afterwards.
00:02:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
But at some great games, and I think it's worth us just having a little bit of a chew and see how many of them we guess right.
00:02:31
Michael
Oh, absolutely. I'm well done for that.
00:02:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good stuff. Let's let direct our attention, first of all, to the main event tomorrow night, 8.15 at Canfield. Not at the end of Newcastle, but a ground where we do tend to perform with Eddie Howe, even though we still haven't got a point out of them yet.
00:02:43
Michael
Absolutely.
00:02:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we've played really well last couple years.
00:02:54
Michael
ah good Yeah, I mean, last year was a little bit of blow. Obviously, the result was four two But think if you remember the ah expected goals for Liverpool, now we'll not talk about the Diogo Joppa.
00:03:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Perry Kivolowitz- It.
00:03:08
Michael
Diogo Jota dive, which is one of the most embarrassing things I've ever seen in my life. But I believe the XG was um the highest any team had accumulated in Premier League history. So, or at least since records began, let's say. um But it's one of those where they could have had quite a few goals. We were very clinical on the day. We were quite lucky to get to.
00:03:30
Michael
But I think we're in a much better position now than what we were then.
00:03:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I agree. I agree. I think that's Sven Botman's last goal for Newcastle was header five minutes from the end to put us 3-2.
00:03:39
Michael
It is, yes.
00:03:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it was amazing having watched us get so spanked for more than an hour.
00:03:44
Michael
Yeah.
00:03:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he did that.
00:03:48
Michael
I've
00:03:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
So you're thinking, my word, yeah you know, one more freaky run of the ball and we could get score out of this.
00:03:51
Michael
got a chance. Yeah.
00:03:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dubraka was absolutely brilliant that night, of course, and but unlikely to be playing tomorrow night after Eddie's decision.
00:03:58
Michael
yeah
00:04:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
He seems to have... i seem to have determined that Nick Cope is definitely his main man. What do you think of that?
00:04:08
Michael
Yeah, I wonder to have but how you ah was actually going to just ask you the same question. How do you feel about it? We mentioned it a little bit in the chat um earlier, and I know Joe and Nick are very much in the Team Dubravka camp.
00:04:20
Michael
Myself, a little bit in the Team Nick Pope camp. I think when you've got a cup final coming up, you play your best players. And if your best players aren't sharp, You get them shot before that cup final because we don't want another situation where our backup keepers in goal for a cup final and doesn't perform.
00:04:37
Michael
If Nick Pope doesn't perform, fair enough. He's still our number one goalkeeper. And to be honest, the goals we conceded against Nottingham Forest are enough to put doubt in anyone's mind.
00:04:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:04:48
Michael
I can see why people want Dubrovka back in the team. But he wasn't fantastic either. So let's give Pope a couple of games to get up to speed, get his sharpness back. And I think Nick Pope's the number one for the rest of the season comfortably.
00:05:02
Michael
But I do feel slightly bad for Martin Dubrovka just signing a new contract. We're going to say that's just so he can get his Saudi move in the summer. But Newcastle can actually get a little bit of fee. of a bit little bit of a fee for him.
00:05:17
Michael
Fingers crossed it's that and he hasn't just been duped like his wife's Instagram would tell you it's kind of been like because she was not happy.
00:05:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
fuck
00:05:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no, no, no. Well, like I said, I mean, you know, Martin Dubravka did get a winner's medal in the Carabao Cup that year when we lost to Manchester United.
00:05:33
Michael
Yes?
00:05:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
So he's already got the gong. think Nick Pope needs the gong, that's for sure.
00:05:41
Michael
Yeah. 100%.
00:05:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I will be honest with you, 10 minutes into the Nottingham Forest game, I wondered why the hell Nick Pope had been brought back in because, as I say,
00:05:42
Michael
but so
00:05:50
Michael
and
00:05:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
He sort of went down like an animated cartoon on that first one. and Standing at the corner flag was a bad position to start trying get it down to the bottom corner of the other side of the goal.
00:06:04
Michael
Yeah, ridiculous.
00:06:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Even Nick Fogue couldn't get close to it. But I think his performance improved during the game, and I was absolutely pleasantly surprised about his distribution when he started throwing throwing the ball out instead of trying to kick it out.
00:06:16
Michael
Yeah, I agree.
00:06:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, so yeah, but what well, Nick Pope, fair enough. That's good.
00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who else has come in?
00:06:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
but seenina but We've seen Eddie today go through. What do you make of his? Buckman and Joe Linton are very close and getting closer and improving all of the time.
00:06:28
Michael
So
00:06:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Comment. Are they both in tomorrow?
00:06:45
Michael
I mean, if it if it's down to me, who isn't seeing training, for example, I would say 100% put them in. But at the same time, Lewis Miley and Joe Willock were two of our best players against Nottingham Forest. So to take any of them out for Joe Linton...
00:07:01
Michael
I think it would be harsh, um but we've seen that Eddie Howe doesn't mind being harsh if it's to make the right decision in his eyes. So I think Joe Linton has ah more of a chance of playing than Sven Botman.
00:07:12
Michael
um I thought first half against Nottingham Forest, Dan Byrne was a colossus, Fabian Shaw less so. But I think you know one of our most experienced defenders up against that Liverpool side, you need experience.
00:07:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:07:25
Michael
ah in your centre-backs, and I think Sharon Byrne might stick as the two. It depends on if he wants to play that back five that we saw against Arsenal. If he plays the back five, I think Bottman slips in, maybe Miley and Willick come out, Tonali partners Bruno, who, to be fair, you could argue could be dropped himself after the second-half performance, but I think he's done so much for the team, and he's been really good, sort of,
00:07:53
Michael
at doing the dirty work this year and to not least done absolutely fantastic. It's sort of cleaning up behind that. I think those two as your midfield two would do a brilliant job. um But I do think that back five,
00:08:07
Michael
If you have Fabian Shaw, Dan Byrne Sven Bottman available, I think it's got to be a back five with Liv Rimento and Lewis Hall bombing forward. But at the same time, cup final, is that a little bit on his mind? Does he want to play the back five now or does he want to leave it as a sort surprise that we could implement in the final if we get there?
00:08:29
Michael
I don't know.
00:08:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
keep them guesses.
00:08:30
Michael
100%.
00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Got to keep them guesses.
00:08:32
Michael
hundred percent
00:08:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Barnes came on against Forrest.
00:08:37
Michael
Yeah.
00:08:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
didn't didn't really do very much, but I think that might have been because we couldn't get the ball to him.
00:08:40
Michael
No.
00:08:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Same way that Isaac faded into invisibility because we couldn't get the ball to him.
00:08:43
Michael
Yeah.
00:08:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wilson came on and looked fit, did run hard, did battle, but but then when he got one or two chances, I thought he was a little bit a
00:08:48
Michael
No. 100%.
00:08:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
for Helen Wilson rather than for the team. Certainly that last break away, there was a square ball that put Gordon
00:09:02
Michael
hundred percent
00:09:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
10 yards out with an open net to make it safe. But he didn't even get a shot away, I don't think.
00:09:13
Michael
Yeah, you could tell by Gordon's reaction. He was hurt. He was really angry at Wilson for that. And he he gets a shot away, but he literally just kicks it straight against the defender. And it's one of those where if you're in the corner, you're in the corner flag and it goes anywhere, you still get a corner or a throw in.
00:09:29
Michael
That's acceptable. Just kicking it against the defender. But when you're you know on the edge of the box, you've got a fair distance for it to go out for a throw in corner, maybe less so, but you've got to be looking to play through Anthony Gordon to make it safe.
00:09:43
Michael
Cause five, three, There's no nerves there whatsoever. But 4-3, they definitely could have got back into it in the end. And given our performance, it wouldn't have surprised anyone.
00:09:54
Michael
So Wilson, we'll put that down to sharpness.
00:09:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:09:57
Michael
I think I mentioned it with Pope. Wilson's had virtually no minutes. A fit Callum Wilson, I don't think he does that. But I imagine he's a little bit desperate for minutes, game time, and to show what he can do.
00:10:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I bet that's true. That is absolutely true. So, we can't really guess the team because it's a bit up in the air about firstly the tactics he's going to employ, secondly the personnel that he's got. So, we've talked where we think there might be changes.
00:10:25
Michael
and
00:10:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
How we going to do? Do we get anything from it or not?
00:10:29
Michael
So I said last night on the crossover podcast that I thought it would be too too um But I did admit that I was being a little bit optimistic and that maybe the heart was ruling over the head.
00:10:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:10:44
Michael
um And if I'm completely honest, I do see us losing, um particularly because we're not playing great at the moment. I think Newcastle, when we were on that 11-game run ah ah of wins, unbeaten,
00:10:59
Michael
um I would have backed us to maybe even pick up a first win at Anfield since, I think it's 1994. ah But you look at it now and you think, I don't think that team's got it in them right now.
00:11:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow.
00:11:13
Michael
But I'd love to be wrong.
00:11:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we were in a similar position when we went to play Arsenal at home, so much so that Arsenal had decided that, and they they had just beaten Manchester City, the Arsenal fans had gone from writing off their chances when they lost that home semi-final.
00:11:23
Michael
Mm-hmm.
00:11:30
Michael
Yeah.
00:11:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
to fully expect them to be able to turn around the two-goal deficit when they turned up at St James' part. And we were absolutely magnificent on that night.
00:11:43
Michael
We were.
00:11:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was where the five-man defense was deployed and made us into a really attacking force, which was a wonderful sight to behold.
00:11:43
Michael
You're right.
00:11:53
Michael
Yeah.
00:11:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're in a similar situation now, Michael. I'm hoping that...
00:11:56
Michael
Yeah.
00:11:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we'll turn up. I think we do turn up and we battle and we're hard. We've got more players a bit fitter, back from injury.
00:12:05
Michael
Mm-hmm. That's true.
00:12:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Liverpool, in their last home game, struggled to get past Wolves. No, they looked garily, frighten frighteningly good against Manchester City.
00:12:12
Michael
sure
00:12:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
But then they were two up after half an hour and just left it for half and it worked for for another last hour without doing anything else. So, I quite like your 2-2. I might go first, being able to work hard and and pick up a draw.
00:12:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
And to be honest, we should have picked up a draw two seasons ago when they scored their winner in the seventh minute of injury time.
00:12:38
Michael
Yeah, Fabio Carvalho. Still have nightmares.
00:12:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
when there was only five When there was only five minutes put up on the referee's board. But yeah, don't a that I'm going to go for a draw. You're going to for a loss, eh?
00:12:49
Michael
Yeah, I said 2-2 yesterday, so realistically I should stick with that. But I think being honest and not just being the only the new NUFC representative on tip on ah on a crossover, I do think they'll come out probably 3-1 winners, um unfortunately.
00:13:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we shall be ah tuned in tomorrow night, sitting on the edge of our seats for how long? I'm not sure. Hopefully Liverpool won't score as quickly as either Nottingham Forest or Manchester City did.
00:13:20
Michael
Yeah.
00:13:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going pause there, Michael, and play this lovely Bionic advert. And then think we should have a look at the other games that are on this week.
00:13:26
Michael
Delightful.
00:13:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
As I say, I think a lot of our rivals are going to get beaten as well.
00:13:33
Michael
Sounds good.
00:14:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
That sound a bit rushed through the middle. Like all the gaps were taken out. And then there was a huge gap and then Ken comes back. I know he spoke before he came and finished it off. ah but that's what happened That's what happens when the adverts are recorded.
00:14:25
Michael
Yeah. Need me.
00:14:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think you would have you have read it so much better than that, Michael. I know you would have done.
00:14:29
Michael
Oh, thank you very much. I take passion and pride in the adverts.
00:14:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway. Lovely. Right. It works quite nicely in that there are four matches tonight. that we can talk about first, and then we'll we'll do ah ah a break and then we'll have a look at the other five.
00:14:41
Michael
Yes.
00:14:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not the Newcastle one, we've done that. Brighton and Bournemouth. ah Look at that. I would love to watch that. I think I might be able to tonight.
00:14:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're all on the telly tonight, aren't they? um ah
00:15:00
Michael
ah Yes, I think so.
00:15:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can see either team winning, but I'm hoping that means it ends up a draw because they're both rivals Champions of League places, really.
00:15:09
Michael
Yeah, Bournemouth are one of those teams.
00:15:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
How do you see
00:15:13
Michael
Strike, I
00:15:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
it go?
00:15:17
Michael
ah' say Brighton are one of those teams that on their day can beat anybody. um They did get absolutely battered off Nottingham Forest, um but I don't think that shows how they are as a team.
00:15:27
Michael
While Bournemouth, they've got a lot of injuries, and I think towards the end of the season, we probably are more likely to see you know that fitness that you know you' would expect to Chelsea or an Arsenal to have because they play so many games that Bournemouth simply don't. I mean, they were really poor against Wolves.
00:15:45
Michael
um But they were excellent against Nottingham Forest. They were excellent against us. So they seem to turn up against bigger teams. They should have got something against Liverpool. So I ah could feasibly see Bournemouth coming away from Brighton with three points.
00:16:01
Michael
But I do think that Brighton will manage to hold on for, as you mentioned, you'd love a draw. And I do think it'll be a score draw. And it could be 2-2. um or i'll But I'll go one more.
00:16:13
Michael
Because don't want to repeat myself.
00:16:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
1-1, which will be the number of points they both get from that game, of course.
00:16:19
Michael
Absolutely.
00:16:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I agree. I think it's a draw. I think it's a draw, but I could see either team winning in it. um Apparently, Brighton, when they got hammered at Horace, were trying something.
00:16:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they I was told they played with one in midfield, and they were trying something very spectacularly, and and and it was the but when the manager, whose name I've forgotten, the young lad,
00:16:36
Michael
Oh, ah would explain it. Yeah.
00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah set fire to his tactics team after the game in front of the players and showed they would never ever line up like that again. um
00:16:54
Michael
I credit Fabian Herzl if that has happened because so many managers try something new and it just doesn't work.
00:16:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:17:02
Michael
And I guess the same has to be said for Iriola. um They went, well, I think it was their first 10 games without picking up a win. And he was, the debt you I remember him being the bookies' favourite to be sacked because I wrote about it.
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:16
Michael
And now... They're saying he could be Real Madrid manager next season, which fantastic turnaround from him. And to be honest, Bournemouth could be in Champions League contention.
00:17:29
Michael
If they get that, he deserves the biggest job in the world.
00:17:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
They could.
00:17:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
excellent I agree. um I'm going to try and while you're doing your Zancaster Rad, get where we are with the points and everything, just to add the points we give them onto to it to see how far we fall behind.
00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
if we could lose to Liverpool.
00:17:45
Michael
Good stuff.
00:17:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think this one's going to help us out, though, in my view. Palace against Villa.
00:17:55
Michael
pal are in front Yeah.
00:17:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Where's that?
00:17:57
Michael
Palace are in fantastic form. John-Philippe Mateta looks like he could end up going in the record books as one of Crystal Palace's best ever strikers. I mean, to be honest, when you can main competitions, the likes of Andy Johnson, that's probably not much of a surprise, but I think he's one of those players that he's big, he's strong, he's quick, and we're starting to see the more clinical side of him. So I think definitely, Mateta is going to get on the score sheet against a pretty dodgy Aston Villa defence.
00:18:25
Michael
um But at the same time, Villa, with the additions of Asensio and Rashford, Rashford looks a completely different player. um I don't know what you think about him, but for me, he looks great in a Villa shirt.
00:18:38
Michael
And as... 100%. Mm-hmm.
00:18:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he looks a lot sharper, for sure. For sure, looks a lot sharper.
00:18:41
Michael
and so
00:18:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think Asensio, I mean, I know he scored two, and he's not really in that team for his goal scoring prowess.
00:18:51
Michael
No.
00:18:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Asensio looks a setfi looked really good player. And already linking up with Morgan Rodgers like they've been playing all season together.
00:18:59
Michael
Yeah. Very annoying.
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I think that's a great game. I do think Palace will edge it, which is good, because Villa are going to hunt us down if they can. but I think it's zero points.
00:19:09
Michael
Yeah.
00:19:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's one team they ain't gonna fall behind by losing a two against Liverpool.
00:19:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wolves and Fulham, Fulham are there as well, really. And they were just four points behind it.
00:19:15
Michael
Yeah.
00:19:19
Michael
Yeah.
00:19:22
Michael
Yeah, I think Fulham are one of those. I mean, i left I am going to double check just to make sure I'm not wrong. But yeah, their form hasn't been fantastic. They pick up wins against the likes of um Newcastle.
00:19:33
Michael
we you know I think we're one of the teams that have played them and not really performed at our best. But that just comes down to how Marco Silva's got Fulham playing. They play a really fluid style. Murniz and Jimenez up front.
00:19:45
Michael
Not exactly clinical. but he's got them working. He's got them playing well. um I mean, I've seen Ademar Traore starting to actually execute brilliant crosses, which he was a pace merchant for the last 10 years.
00:19:57
Michael
I didn't think he could actually pass a ball, and but he looks amazing now.
00:19:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:20:01
Michael
It will be. Arsenal's... Arsenal and Everton... Well, not an Everton flop. He was sold for £35 million, but Everton didn't really see the best of him. Arsenal didn't see the best him. Now we're seeing it for Fulham. So he's really getting the best out of those kind of players.
00:20:15
Michael
And I think... They'll fall short. I don't think they'll get Europe. They're doing really well to be in with contention. And I think only Arsenal and Liverpool have lost less than Fulham this season.
00:20:27
Michael
um So it just goes to show, in fact, Brighton as well. I think Brighton are the masters of the draw. I think they've got six, um which coincides with what we said earlier. But yeah, I think Fulham against Wolves, I'd expect Fulham to pick up a win.
00:20:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:20:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Would you?
00:20:42
Michael
Yeah, 100%.
00:20:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
i see I've seen since I've watched Wolves lose 3-0 at Newcastle but actually they could have done a Fulham honour with a better run in front of goals and they won at Bournemouth didn't they?
00:20:43
Michael
and some
00:20:52
Michael
yeah
00:20:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know Bournemouth had a man sent off but they won away at Bournemouth which is Preston on a weekend.
00:20:58
Michael
Yeah. Yeah.
00:21:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Wolves might get something out of this game and I picked up that Fulham are prone to a draw and less effective against the mid-table, lower-table team.
00:21:14
Michael
yeah
00:21:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to go for another draw on that one.
00:21:16
Michael
it It completely makes sense. I mean, Wolves are one of those teams where i think they play really well, but some under Pereira, they seem to be just missing out on the result to match it at times.
00:21:27
Michael
Fantastic in the last few games. The win against Villa is the one that stands out. But yeah, it could be one of the it could be any scoreline, and I think that's what makes those kind of games special.
00:21:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
The last one tonight, Chelsea-Southampton.
00:21:42
Michael
Oh...
00:21:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
In two seconds, Michael, is that three points for Chelsea?
00:21:46
Michael
Yeah, 5-0 Chelsea.
00:21:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, let me just register that I didn't think Southampton were as a calling as they have been um when I was watching them. They got well beaten on the weekend though, did they not?
00:22:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
can't remember. They lose at home 4-0 to somebody.
00:22:03
Michael
Yeah, they weren' they weren't great.
00:22:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
can't remember.
00:22:04
Michael
i can't I can't remember the game, but I feel like every single...
00:22:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:22:08
Michael
every Yeah, they lost 4-0 to Brighton. um I feel like every single time I watch them, I can't wait for them to get relegated.
00:22:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're such nice lads on the daily Southampton though. Really are good lads.
00:22:20
Michael
They are. Excellent, lads.
00:22:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Chelsea aren't in very good form either. They're down in the bottom half of the form table. They surely struggle to get past Southampton though.
00:22:28
Michael
Yeah.
00:22:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll give them three points with a win.
00:22:33
Michael
It'd be beautiful, but...
00:22:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think it'll be a 5-0 though. I think it'll be a 2-1, 3-1.
00:22:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't think it's one-sided as you think. Anyway, Michael, I'm pausing there. Give us your Zengpester and the bunny lad.
00:22:48
Michael
Oh, absolutely. Here at the Global Sports Podcast Network, we spent a lot of time delivering our delivery platform. ah Zencastr, it came out a clear winner.
00:23:00
Michael
With 4K video recording from your phone and AI editing that automatically removes all those ums and ahs. It's super easy to start a podcast that sounds great and is delivered efficiently.

00:23:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm laughing because thank you.
00:23:21
Michael
because I messed it up.
00:23:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, you didn't mess it up, did you?
00:23:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wasn't listening.
00:23:25
Michael
I did.
00:23:25
Michael
First line, i said, it's delivered and then delivered again.
00:23:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
like
00:23:29
Michael
But it's fine. It's just a brilliant delivery platform. And that's why I had to say it twice.
00:23:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, well done. I am laughing because I'm desperately trying to get all of the points for these teams that I think that we're in competition with written down so I can finish the pod off with some sort of conclusion.
00:23:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
and First game, Brentford. Brentford, who are just on the shirt tails of Fulham and Brighton, and therefore with a decent run, you'd think would be able to come chasing after us.
00:23:59
Michael
Mm-hmm.
00:24:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're seven points behind us at the moment, so we've got to include them. Again, one of the form teams of the Premier League, and I never thought I'd say that this season when Thorndyke was brunting his way to another 0-0 draw.
00:24:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Against Everton, how do you think Brentford Everton will go?
00:24:19
Michael
Yeah, it's it's a really awkward one because Brentford, a couple of months ago we were saying they've got the best ah home form in the league. They were unbeaten. They were coming up against Nottingham Forest and I think Arsenal and I said on the pod, that won't last. I'm pretty sure they got a good result in one of those games. I can't remember which one it was, probably Forest.
00:24:39
Michael
um But the the home form hasn't been great since. um And as you say, Everton, they're the form team under David Moyes. And you hate to see it. You really do. Because this was the year you were looking at it and going, oh, Everton could finally go down.
00:24:54
Michael
And then David Moyes has come in.
00:24:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Do you?
00:24:56
Michael
And he's been absolutely fantastic. It's a revelation. And I'm actually, it it looks fantastic to see a David Moyes side above Manchester United after the way he was tracked there. So I have a, I have a, I like Moyes. do like Moyes as a manager. i don't like Everton. So it evens itself out a little bit, but I do think Everton will come away with a victory.
00:25:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
dear
00:25:18
Michael
ah from Brentford. Yeah, I think Beto's in fantastic form. Decorey behind him looks like a completely new player. And I really like that Alcaraz as well that they've signed in from um South America in the summer.
00:25:32
Michael
Behind the after the deadline, which is a bit suspicious, but it's one of those where they look a completely transformed team. They've now got attacking options who were there all along, except from Alcaraz, but they look so much of a different team and they're really difficult to beat.
00:25:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
They do. They're quite transformed, aren't they?
00:25:48
Michael
Yeah.
00:25:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Transformed. I enjoyed the draw against Liverpool. i pleased that they got that.
00:25:54
Michael
Yeah.
00:25:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
but In fact, that was such a late equaliser. It was nearly at the start of the next game they were playing. and
00:26:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I like Brent... Brentford... Who did Brent... Brentford had a good win on the weekend. That's the powerful, potent forward line with Whissa, Mbwemo and Sada. I think they'll have too much for Everton.
00:26:14
Michael
Yeah.
00:26:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Brentford will win this. But I think it'll be a really good game. think a 2-1, a 3-2, something like that.
00:26:21
Michael
Yeah. It'll definitely be tight.
00:26:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
good But, so yeah... um I've got Man United and Ipswich. Is that a relegation battle? Do we just have to pass over that and say, keep our fingers crossed that Ipswich managed to get a... There's some pressure on Ipswich to pick up some points with Wolves' win and them losing on the weekend.
00:26:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're five points adrift now.
00:26:42
Michael
Yeah, 100%.
00:26:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
But they're playing Man United. And Man United are... What's the word? Dreadful? Dreadful?
00:26:51
Michael
Yeah, I'd probably use that as somewhat Man United at the moment. It sounds about right. I think it's annoying that... Amarum has come in at this time of the season because ah think it's one of those where under Ten Hag, you had no expectations of them getting relegated.
00:27:09
Michael
But because they've switched managers and gotten worse, you're looking at it and going, oh, Man Utd must be close to relegation. ah And then you look at the table and unfortunately, that think it's 10 points off.
00:27:21
Michael
um Despite not winning a game for what feels like forever. I know they've beat Leicester few a few games back, but it seems it It feels like they're losing or drawing every single week and they're still up there, unfortunately. So I think it's not a relegation six-pointer unless Ipswich win.
00:27:40
Michael
If Ipswich pick up three points, you've got to be a Man United fan turning around and going, we've got a problem here.
00:27:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hang a minute. Yeah, yeah.
00:27:48
Michael
Yeah.
00:27:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Amaram knew that, didn't he? He knew it was the wrong time to come in.
00:27:51
Michael
Yeah.
00:27:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
He wanted to wait until the summer, but they just wouldn't let him. They'd come now or else.
00:27:56
Michael
Yeah, I found it. Yeah, I found it baffling that they let Ten Hag stay on, to be honest, because he'd won the FA Cup, obviously, prevented us getting into into Europe. But Man United fans knew from the moment, well, from about six months before that cup final, that he was he should have been sacked.
00:28:15
Michael
It wasn't a good fit for the team. They've spent £120 million or something in the summer.
00:28:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know.
00:28:20
Michael
I think it's a lot more than that, actually. And then gone... all right, well, we're going to bring in this new manager ah who doesn't like any of the players we've signed. So it's brilliant. Dan Ashworth lost his job as well, although he got a hefty payout, so he won't be crying.
00:28:36
Michael
ah Isn't it just great to see Man United in those 15th position?
00:28:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, hes it is. However, there's a human story in there which is awful. If you see the back of the Daily Mail today, there's 200 non-playing staff have lost their job.
00:28:48
Michael
Yeah.
00:28:52
Michael
I did, yeah.
00:28:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
the
00:28:53
Michael
It's unfortunate.
00:28:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
The canteen now doesn't serve any freelancers, it just offers fruit.
00:28:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
and What's going on? This doesn't sound like the global force that we expect of Manchester United.
00:28:57
Michael
Yeah.
00:29:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
It sounds a bit like Salford trying to compete.
00:29:04
Michael
No, 100%.
00:29:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry, Salford. I'm sure Salford haven't sacked anybody. They've still got the tea lady. and So what are you going on this? you think Gibbs Christian can do it? I think they might, you know.
00:29:09
Michael
Yeah, Rakus.
00:29:21
Michael
I'd love to see it, but I do think it'll be an away win for Man United. I would love to see a ah Liam De La Patrick 3-1 Ipswich, but I do think it'll be one of those games where Man United will get over the line by Joshua Xerxes kneeing it into the goal without knowing where the ball is or something like that.
00:29:41
Michael
It'll be one of those.
00:29:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
but It's ah that old Stafford. so can get the crowd on the Man United's back because Infridham actually much more successful away from home than they are at Portman Road.
00:29:46
Michael
Yeah.
00:29:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, so we're going either way. it probably end up at draws. We've got one for each, but we'll see. It doesn't affect the top of the table in the slightest. Anyway, this one does.
00:30:01
Michael
No. Yeah.
00:30:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Forrest in third, but having lost three of the last four games, against Arsenal in second, six points behind.
00:30:10
Michael
yeah
00:30:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now I'm hopeful that because Arsenal couldn't score in a brothel, that we have witnessed the first, with their home to defeat to West Ham, we witnessed the first game in a sad and sorry decline as they fall completely from grace.
00:30:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it will be compounded tonight when Nottingham Forest just roll them over. Can you see that happening?
00:30:33
Michael
yeah
00:30:40
Michael
I wish. um And to be honest, I kind of can, because ah think Forest, if they're on the day, let's say it's the second half against Newcastle, they have a lot of potential to do well.
00:30:54
Michael
And Arsenal, as you say, they can't score in a brothel. Yeah. I think four players out is a big theres a big distraction for them. But I think the pressure's not on Arsenal anymore.
00:31:07
Michael
I think after that loss to West Ham, they know the title's gone. It was a case of, before West Ham, we have to win every single game. Now, it's a case of, well, we're nine points, I think it is, ahead of the pack for Champions League.
00:31:23
Michael
That's the aim for them. Champions League, but how they do in that league this season, is probably the main thing. Kaio Saka comes back in March. Same with Martinelli, I believe. So I don't think we'll catch them up per se. It'll be a lot closer than I think many believe.
00:31:41
Michael
But I do you have to go with a... I want to go Forest win, so i'm going to stick with the Forest win. I could see it being a scoreless draw, but I think Forest 2-0 win.
00:31:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
that That is both of us on ah on a Forrest win. um Forrest are only points off Arsenal, by the way.
00:32:00
Michael
Oh.
00:32:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if they win, they'll only be three points. And if you think Arsenal haven't got any pressure on, and if they've got Forrest taking them down, three points behind, say Newcastle picks something up. Or even if Newcastle don't, if Bournemouth win, Man City win, there's a pass closing on them.
00:32:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
That would be fantastic if Arsenal didn't even qualify for the Champions League, wouldn't it?
00:32:25
Michael
I think it's it's it's one of those where you it it feels unheard of. It feels like it's not going to happen this season under Arteta. But they do look dreadful at the minute. And they can't score a goal.
00:32:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah know.
00:32:37
Michael
so
00:32:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And their last home game of the season at home to that team that's already beaten them three times.
00:32:42
Michael
Newcastle.
00:32:45
Michael
Three!
00:32:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that would be interesting, wouldn't it?
00:32:48
Michael
It would indeed.
00:32:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
and OK, now I've got to include these guys because they're talking about still being on for qualifying for Europe, although they're starting from a long way back.
00:32:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Tottenham at home to Manchester City. Tottenham, three straight wins.
00:33:04
Michael
Yeah, actually I hadn't thought of it that way. I'd thought of three wins in about 15 games or something. But yeah, they are actually turning the corner a little bit under Big Ang. However, it's still the Tottenham that we've we've seen for a little while.
00:33:19
Michael
um I can't remember who they've played. it's less was it Brentford and Ipswich? I think the last three they've played were. um So it's maybe... Oh no, Man United.
00:33:32
Michael
Well, actually, you you're better off playing Man United than Leicester at this particular moment. So, you know, they've won three in a row. But I think as soon as they come up against a half-decent team, they'll crumble.
00:33:44
Michael
But they have beaten Man City. I think it was 4-0. Might have been 4-1 already this season. And they do tend to do well against City. 4-0 it was. So,
00:33:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
City have one win against Tottenham at Tottenham since 2018 twenty eighteen
00:34:02
Michael
i'll I'll still back them and make it too.
00:34:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
They have a team. know well i'm um It depends which Man City turn up, don't they? If the Man City turn up and play like they did against the Sandal Stroll, it will probably win 4-0 there as well.
00:34:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
But if they are as standard as we've seen them in the majority of the game since the start December, I could see Tottenham taking take I don't know what to say on this one.
00:34:16
Michael
Yeah.
00:34:26
Michael
Well, let's say Tottenham win.
00:34:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
We want a Tottenham win, certainly because let's say let have a Tottenham win. Have a Tottenham win. I briefly mentioned West Ham and Leicester, which finished things off.
00:34:37
Michael
yeah
00:34:42
Michael
ah
00:34:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Got to West Ham win.
00:34:44
Michael
Yeah, I think Graham Potter already under a little bit of pressure, um but I think they'll get a win that puts them above, well, put them keeps them on par with Man United.
00:34:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, West Ham to win that one, but not affecting the top at all. Now, If my math is correct after these results that we've picked, Arsenal are going to lose, but they'll still be second in 53 points.
00:35:05
Michael
Right.
00:35:11
Michael
Yeah.
00:35:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Forrest will be third with 50 points.
00:35:16
Michael
Magnificent achievement.
00:35:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I think that will touch... What did we say we were going to get?
00:35:24
Michael
We've said a draw for us, if we're being cheeky.
00:35:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, OK.
00:35:29
Michael
ah
00:35:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. OK. Well, if we got our draw, Chelsea's win against Southampton will give them 46 points.
00:35:37
Michael
Okay.
00:35:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they will therefore jump above But if we get a draw and move on to 45, we'll go above Manchester City. So we will hold on to our fifth place.
00:35:49
Michael
That'd be fantastic.
00:35:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
the Then we'd have Manchester City probably there in sixth. Bournemouth would pick up a point and also be on 44 points.
00:35:58
Michael
Mm-hmm.
00:35:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
So they would still be seventh, I think, on the goal difference. We didn't give Villa anything. We only gave a point to Fulham, so they're on 40 points. Villa 42. Brighton would pick a point up to be 41.
00:36:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think that's all of them. Brentford-Everton. I gave Brentford a win to go on to 40. So the point I'm making, the whole point of this is we don't pick much up at Liverpool, but then neither did Bournemouth, neither did Manchester City.
00:36:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Forrest and Arsenal could draw. It's just one match day out of the 38 match days that we have to get through. And there are still 10 or 12, so can't even count up.
00:36:36
Michael
Yeah.
00:36:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have got a fantastic April to look forward to where four of our matches are at home. And there's another one a away to Leicester.
00:36:47
Michael
Yeah. 100%.
00:36:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's that sort of month which will really decide our fate. Not this horrible game at Liverpool.
00:36:53
Michael
andjiam
00:36:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was fun.
00:36:57
Michael
hundred percent It's interesting to see how things can go because as much as we can remain in our little Newcastle bubble, ah goldfish bowl, as Jermaine Genius would describe it, there's so much going on in the Premier League that influences us and everyone says, ah just focus on your own team. but we did play well against Forest and we won.
00:37:19
Michael
Other teams around us aren't even picking up those three points at times. So realistically, it's not that bad right now. And I think if you said to a lot of people, we'd be in the final of the cup, albeit against Liverpool, ah we'd still be in the FA Cup and we'd be sat in fifth place on... Are we all at the same point as Manchester City?
00:37:39
Michael
I think anyone would have took that at the start the season.
00:37:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
ye 44 points.
00:37:41
Michael
Anyone would have took that.
00:37:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think you're right.
00:37:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excuse me. I think you're absolutely right. And we've got some very winnable home games coming up because we haven't played Man United yet. Oh, that was a final dig for Manchester United. But A, they deserve it, don't they?
00:37:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
All that rubbish about Dan Ashworth and then sat him three months after we've got there.
00:37:57
Michael
Oh, yes.
00:38:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you very much indeed for that, Michael. I've just thought also we could have actually picked any results here. because we're never going to have to report back on them. So we don't have to be accountable for anything on this. and What do you think, listeners? Do you agree with us? they want to Let me and Michael know if you think we're completely nuts.
00:38:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I suppose you'll wait until you've seen the actual scores before you know if we were or we weren't. But thank you very much indeed for taking part, Michael. i thought it was good fun. um We shall be back tomorrow, probably with our preview, is it, for the Saturday game?
00:38:36
Michael
ah Yes, it will be, yeah.
00:38:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
every people keep with the three or three
