Introduction and Hosts' Arrival

00:00:00
Kev
Thank
00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Newcastle. My name's Ian Mackay. I'm here to review today's game against Nottingham Forest, which Newcastle have won for free, keeping all our hopes and dreams alive.
00:00:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
When I say our, I'm talking about my two good buddies here on the Daily Newcastle. First of all, Mr Michael Grameslaw, the Queen of Zencastle. How are you, Michael?
00:00:33
Michael
I'm doing absolutely fantastic, you know, at least I was until the Queenie part was mentioned. I have said I'll get up and leave when that happens, but I don't want to leave people disappointed after 32 seconds.
00:00:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, you've got a...
00:00:45
Kev
You normally do, so... You normally do, but yeah, sorry.
00:00:46
Michael
I was waiting for it.
00:00:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:00:47
Michael
I left the silence.
00:00:50
Kev
I've just jumped my gun as well.
00:00:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, and and regular listeners may be able to detect that my other guest tonight is Mr.
00:00:54
Michael
Who else here?
00:00:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kevin Esther on a permanent siesta.
00:01:01
Kev
It...
00:01:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
How are you, Kevin?
00:01:04
Kev
I wish I was. I tell you what, having a little one at home. four Permanent siesta sounds good right now. Yeah, I'm good. I do need to apologise to Michael, though, because I did accidentally call him a Queen of Zencast, and I've got a feeling it's going to stick, Michael, so I apologise.
00:01:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, it's like a Pavlovan dog reaction from me now every time I see that lovely face.
00:01:19
Michael
I'll just leave. I'll take a hiatus.
00:01:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just immediately think, the Queen of Zencastr. Once we get that face on this the the stamps and the coins and the notes, we'll have made it.
00:01:31
Michael
You gave us a compliment in there as well, so I'll take it.

Goalkeeper Switch Debate

00:01:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, look, today's match. Today's match was one that we won and we had to win, I think, after the match at Manchester City.
00:01:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
A 4-3, a thriller for everybody else. More of a nightmare for me, for most of that game. and My word.
00:01:46
Kev
Thank you.
00:01:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But first things first, there were some changes that Eddie Howe brought in. First of all, the switch back to Pope from Gibraltar.
00:02:09
Michael
Yeah.
00:02:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
What did you think of that? were you Were you for it? Were you against it? I was against it, I think. Kevin?
00:02:18
Kev
I was kind of for it. I think Pope's our number one, so Pope plays and that's just the way it is. I mean, Dubrovka had a relatively good spell and he is better with his feet, of course he is, but I mean, come on, Pope is a much better shot stopper. He's going to save you in crucial moments usually.
00:02:36
Kev
don't think that's his best game of the day, but we'll we'll come to that, obviously, once we get Michael's opinion on Pope starting over Dubrovka.
00:02:42
Michael
Yeah, 100%, I agree. I mean, as said in the preview, I think Pope's time to come back into the team is now ahead of the Liverpool game. You know, you get a couple of games in them before the Cup final.
00:02:54
Michael
And as good as Dubravka was for a brief moment of that spell, you have to remember... It was the first few games where you were looking and going high on. Is he actually better than Nick Pope because he can use his feet?
00:03:07
Michael
And in reality, he hasn't he wasn't great. He let in a lot of, well, not a lot, a couple of goals that he should have saved. And then Nick Pope's come in and, well, yeah, we'll save if that for what's coming next.

Midfield Exclusions and Praise

00:03:20
Kev
I think it's a perfect time to talk about now.
00:03:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course.
00:03:22
Michael
ah
00:03:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I dived straight into Nick Pope, but I think the biggest surprise for me anyway, that because I wasn't watching anything, I believe there was it was broken in the day before the game, was no finale in midfield. Fortunately, he was on the bench. So all of our wondering whether it was going to be stick with Willick or bring Miley in or would Longstaff get the place when Joe Linton isn't playing was rubbish because there were two.
00:03:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
We started with Willick and Miley.
00:03:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would have gone with those two.
00:03:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Michael, would you would you did like the look at that?
00:03:56
Michael
Yeah, I think when you look at both players, how they've played in, let's just take 2025, you wouldn't have had a lot of hope before the game. Particularly, I know when the line-up was leaked, I was in the pub taking a look and going,
00:04:09
Michael
There's a lot of negativity there and I kind of agree with it to an extent. but But to be honest, I would have put both players above long staff and skipped ahead a little bit. think both players deserve their place after the performance.
00:04:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it was a little bit of a sneaky preview. we I think they did quite well. Kevin, what do you think of that midfield line-up?
00:04:31
Kev
I'd love to sit here and be like, oh yeah, I knew it was going to work because I thought Miley and Willick both had brilliant games. But if I'm honest, I didn't think that I would have personally before the game have picked Willick, Longstaff and Bruno.
00:04:45
Kev
But it was the right decision, Eddie Howell. Miley had an absolute brilliant game. I think Miley... was one of our better players. know we're going to come to individual performances, so I'll save it again. But yeah, in hindsight, love to sit here and be like, oh yeah, I thought of that, but I personally thought was going to be Longstaff, Willick and Bruno.
00:05:01
Kev
So I was wrong, but my God, I'm happy I'm wrong because Miley was fantastic.
00:05:02
Michael
Yeah.
00:05:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've been clamouring for Louis Miley to get a run in the first team, other than in the Cup games.
00:05:09
Kev
You have...
00:05:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I was very, very pleased.
00:05:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very, very pleased with his performance. I mean, I was sitting after 10 minutes, and well, after 20 minutes, and we're a goal behind and not really doing very much. Not stringing more than two passes together.
00:05:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's Louis Miley who has the cool head and can control the ball on the edge of the puck.
00:05:30
Kev
Thank you.
00:05:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
slot that first goal in to equalise from when the game was completely turned on its head. Very odd. Very odd.

Defensive Concerns

00:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Shall we dive into that first part of that game? and i I thought Nottingham Forest started pretty well. They were pressing well.
00:05:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Murphy obviously thought he was still playing with Anderson for the ball across the middle of the field. Then score their first goal after five minutes or so.
00:06:00
Michael
yeah
00:06:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
and and And Pope went down almost in slow motion. Did he even go down? I think he just dropped to his knees. I know he's a fabulous shot stopper, but there was no advert for that on the way that he attempted to save that first shot.
00:06:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I was, as I say, after 15 minutes, I was quite concerned. How do you think it started, Tia?
00:06:24
Kev
I actually thought we started really well. I mean, they had one shot and it went in. think it was like the first time or one of the rare times in our half. and And yeah, Pope's got to do better. For me, it's his starting position.
00:06:35
Kev
I don't get why he's closer to a far post than he is the near post.
00:06:36
Michael
Yeah.
00:06:38
Kev
It's like... Surely the shortest direction to goal there is the near post. So you stop the shortest direction and give yourself time to react to the furthest direction. But he did the opposite. And I was just very, very confused watching it back.
00:06:52
Kev
At the time, I did think it was quite soft, but didn't want to make any judgment. I didn't know if it took a deflection. didn't know if there was anybody in front of him.
00:06:56
Michael
Oh, shit.
00:06:57
Kev
But other than that, I actually thought we were very good. We looked quite dynamic. I thought Willock's running was brilliant. Miley was, you know, switching with Bruno quite a bit to go into the sixth, allowing Bruno to still go forward, but also control the game.
00:07:09
Kev
I thought our runs out wide were good and I thought it was a matter of time before we took the lead. And then it was just, I mean, God's sake, just throw the ball back to Fabian Shaw. He's literally come all the way back to right back to get it and you've given it to Murphy.
00:07:20
Kev
Murphy should also do better. And then Pope should also do better.
00:07:23
Michael
Yeah.
00:07:24
Kev
But yeah, it was just a lots of mini errors put together and it got Forrest the lead. And at that point, I thought, this is what Forrest do. We did it in Liverpool. We get a goal, we defend really well and we're going to struggle now.
00:07:34
Michael
yeah
00:07:36
Kev
But... I did have a little bit of hope because, like I say, I actually thought we started really well. We'll find out what Michael thought second. But thought we were really promising early on. and We had a couple of flashes across the box, a couple of kind of half me half spaces on the right and left where Willick and Miley were occupying at times. So that was really positive. It was just the goal knocked us a little bit, but I thought it was a fantastic reaction from the players.
00:08:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a fantastic reaction, and I would have...
00:08:01
Michael
Yeah.
00:08:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't don't read the first part of the game like you did. I just thought we kept giving that ball away.
00:08:08
Kev
and
00:08:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought Murphy's brilliant through ball for the goal was just typical of what I'd already seen. we were We were not able to retain the ball brilliantly well.
00:08:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we'd have some lovely promising moves.
00:08:19
Kev
Murphy had few a star but the rest of the mood.
00:08:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'd have some lovely promising moves, I grant you, but then they would just break down with with a pass where they were, I think, were overthinking it. Too many balls that just ran out of play. Michael, first 15 minutes, how do you read it?
00:08:37
Michael
Yeah, I think it's it's one of those we've said numerous times this season, Newcastle struggle against the low block. And it's kind of it's not 100% low block that Forrest occupied. But when I got back, I checked the possession stats for that period of time.
00:08:53
Michael
And Forrest had 18% the ball So they'd sat back. It was clear to see when you were there, but it's one of those where I didn't realise it was that bad.
00:08:57
Kev
what we did well.
00:09:03
Michael
Every time they were just hoofing the ball forward at Chris Wood and Dan Byrne, to be fair, first half, absolute colossus, won pretty much everything. And it just kept coming back.
00:09:14
Michael
But I do have to say, we kept getting it out on the wings and we just couldn't really do anything in those wide areas, which is sort of why we you know we were struggling. And then we say again...
00:09:25
Michael
The throw, Murphy gets on the ball. For some reason, he tries to turn and twist his foot to knock it back to, I think it's Liveramento.
00:09:32
Kev
Yeah.
00:09:36
Michael
And literally any other decision, the goal doesn't happen. But in Murphy's defence, Nick Pope's acting like a soccer-raid goalkeeper, just... on the post, just, oh, so I've got to do something here.
00:09:50
Michael
And he's he's just too late. And it's it was a calamity. It was laughable. And it kind of summed up how we are at times. But what came him after, we'll get into it, but
00:10:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.

First Half Recap

00:10:03
Michael
so good.
00:10:03
Kev
Thank you.
00:10:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
We will. And somehow we have spoken for almost exactly 10 minutes and that's a perfect place to break because we'll come on to the last half hour of the first half.
00:10:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
When we come back, first, here's a word from Cristiano Ronaldo's mob.
00:10:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome back to part two.

Second Half Dominance

00:11:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we're just about to move into part two of the first half, having sat quite close to the Nottingham Forest fans and been heard their songs quite loudly in that first 20 minutes, and Louis Miley scoring an equaliser by being the first person who actually took a little bit of time to think about what he was doing, it then turned the game turned on its head completely And we turned into half Brazil, half Barcelona.
00:11:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Was it 14 minutes it took to score the four goals?
00:11:32
Kev
4-11. Yeah.
00:11:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
we I was...
00:11:32
Kev
Knead
00:11:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was even less than that, was it?
00:11:33
Michael
Something like that, yeah.
00:11:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, well, we almost lost count with them going in. But, damn yeah, so we had a... I'm trying to remember what the second one was. The
00:11:47
Michael
The second was Murphy, where he just sort of...
00:11:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
second was Murphy.
00:11:48
Kev
it in.
00:11:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah. Scored it.
00:11:51
Michael
Yeah.
00:11:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Scored it with his... We thought it might have been his bollocks that he knocked it in with, but anyway, Almiron scored one like that against Manchester City a couple of years ago.
00:11:59
Michael
Yeah, fell on it.
00:12:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Then we had a... Was it a super cool penalty? I thought that was a fantastic penalty from Izak.
00:12:08
Kev
know it was fantastic.
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he was trying to be...
00:12:09
Kev
It was cool, but I don't know if it was fantastic.
00:12:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, he saw him doing what does into each corner. Cells was going for it. He thought, oh, I'll just do a little tip over the top. Now Cells reacted quickly. but he didn't have any spring to get his hands up to it. He could only touch it go in, because he was already going down.
00:12:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought it was a fabulous... He changed his mind at the last second, though, which you're not supposed to do when you take penalties. Anyway, it worked.
00:12:34
Michael
No.
00:12:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then I thought the best goal was the fourth goal. What a fantastic team move up the left.
00:12:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Loved it. That's my assessment. You boys, anything to particularly ability points out in that? Michael.
00:12:49
Michael
Yeah, I think, to be honest, Miley show for the first showed experience beyond his years. Holt and Lewis's combining, is probably something we're going to have the luxury of seeing for the next 10 years, and I love that.
00:13:05
Michael
The second goal is, let's just say, fortunate. But I actually do want to say, and this might

Fan Reactions and Defensive Errors

00:13:13
Michael
not go down well, but the fans on our end,
00:13:17
Michael
After we scored the second goal, started chanting, you're not singing anymore. Half the people behind me, I was sitting there thinking, well, neither were you for the last 25 minutes.
00:13:29
Michael
So it's one of those where we seem to like the battle.
00:13:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:13:35
Michael
But when it comes to actually getting the atmosphere up, there are a lot of people that do tend to... to let's say cop out. But back onto the positives, the goals, I think Kev's going to say the same thing I am.
00:13:48
Michael
And Matt Sells probably showed why he didn't make it here, by the fact of, yeah I think he dropped the ball about three times during the game. And then for the penalty, he gets a good hand on it.
00:14:00
Michael
And it's not a fast, it's not a strong shot.
00:14:02
Kev
It's not, no. Yeah.
00:14:03
Michael
any I think an Edison or an Allison or something that, Let's say he tries that in the cup final against Liverpool, Alisson standing up and just swatting that away.
00:14:09
Kev
Nope. Don't do that, McCook. Just put it for third. Yeah.
00:14:12
Michael
Yeah. So, but what I do have to say is, four goals, 11 minutes. When we're like that, there's not a team in the league that can stop us.
00:14:23
Michael
After that, however. In fact, we'll leave it there on my side, Kev.
00:14:29
Kev
I actually thought, yeah, a lot of what you said. I think Miley definitely deserves a lot of credit. Someone needs to check his birth certificate because he plays like your 35-year-old busquets at minute. and Obviously, he's not that good yet, but he's just so calm and never panics.
00:14:42
Michael
True.
00:14:44
Kev
He gets his way out of trouble. There was an assist, I think, last season. I can't remember who it was against. Everybody was screaming, shoot, and he just squared it just played Isaac in.
00:14:53
Michael
Full of nothing.
00:14:54
Kev
was a Fulham. I thought it was Fulham, but when he scored against Fulham, didn't know if it was the same game.
00:14:55
Michael
think so. Yeah.
00:14:58
Kev
But yeah, he should have. Well, everybody, every 18 or teenager would have, every teenager shoots there and he just slides and he's at and he's at gets goal.
00:15:02
Michael
Just straight through.
00:15:05
Kev
And he was very, very calm a day as well. other one I want to point out from that kind of period of the game, Joe Willock, he hasn't been at his best of a season, been very good now, but his running, my God, he was just going past everybody.
00:15:18
Kev
He was going as a left winger. I love it when they do that.
00:15:21
Michael
Yeah.
00:15:22
Kev
It's a shame we don't have another midfielder. who can almost become a left winger and just kind of outnumber their full backs on that side. Because when Willock does it, it's so devastating. and And it's not just today he's done it. He's done it last year. He's done it the year we finished fourth when he was swapping Joel Linton quite a bit. so It's a very, very effective kind of tool with the cars and I would love to see it more.
00:15:40
Michael
yeah
00:15:43
Kev
But I thought them two were brilliant. I thought towards the end of the game, Lewis Hall, I think he did get man of a match, but he would have been my man of a match towards the end. But that first half, a man of a match was probably Miley slash Willick.
00:15:54
Kev
But yeah, it was, it was I agree with Michael. Look, when we play like that, we are unstoppable almost. It just feels like no team in the world can live with us. And I mean the world, PSG couldn't.
00:16:06
Kev
That's what happened there, really, and obviously Tottenham and other games, Arsenal as well.
00:16:07
Michael
Mm-hmm.
00:16:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Once
00:16:10
Kev
But yeah, not great after that, but I felt like we were so good in that period that we almost earned that kind of poor, I'm going to be nice, poor performance after that.
00:16:23
Kev
But yeah, we almost earned that for me because, again, they were so, so good in that period.
00:16:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
it got full, though, just seemed to... Did you think that was enough, though, did they not? Or was was it Forrest actually... I know Nuno is really disappointed with how Forrest played in the first half.
00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he told them to go and play properly in the second half. And of course, they won the second half 2-0, so maybe they were better in the second and half. But they didn't seem to have anything.
00:16:54
Kev
Forrest did get better, but we hit the post. We hit the post very early on from a corner. Fabian Shaw had it.
00:16:59
Michael
Yeah, sure.
00:17:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:00
Kev
If that had went in, we would have killed him about maybe he maybe
00:17:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.

Second Half Challenges

00:17:03
Kev
even 6-7.
00:17:04
Kev
Didn't Bournemouth do him over recently or somebody.
00:17:05
Michael
Yeah, 5-0.
00:17:07
Kev
and
00:17:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
5-0.
00:17:08
Kev
It could have turned into that, but it just it just hit the post.
00:17:09
Michael
Yeah. five no
00:17:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
i new
00:17:13
Kev
And then after that, Forrest were a lot better. And we were also poor. It was like a combination, I think. But I think that's going to be more part three, potentially.
00:17:21
Michael
Oh. Yeah.
00:17:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Maybe. Maybe. But I think we could start that because we've already we've already suddenly praised it of them.
00:17:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then they just they seem to be damn cool. And that's what I think is so dangerous.
00:17:36
Michael
yeah
00:17:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
the I know you've got to manage the half out.
00:17:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Keep it at 4-1. What a brilliant score to go in at half time. I get easing off for the last five minutes maybe and just protecting what you've got. But it just seems to completely kill the momentum.
00:17:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they can't get back up for it in the second half. And the second half was tech ho with awful. The second half was Bournemouth leveled, I thought. Am I being harsh?
00:18:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did we tie What happened? Yeah.
00:18:08
Michael
I personally thought it was worse than Bournemouth. Bournemouth,
00:18:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:18:15
Michael
it looks a lot worse than what it was because they scored too late on. Second half against Nottingham Forest. yeah As you say, we downed tools. we when It's like we came the second half after a a halftime team talk of, well in lads, you're so good.
00:18:31
Michael
Honestly, you guys, best in the world. It was like an American team talk. That's why I'm being so and enthusiastic, apparently. That's not what Eddie Howe would do.
00:18:37
Kev
We love American viewers. Apologies in advance.
00:18:41
Michael
But honestly, it was so enthusiastic and it was like something you would see. just had something you'd see in a film. And it's like they just came out there and went, yeah, we're good. We're going to win this easy. Chris Wood, he's not going to do anything. Elliot Anderson, we know what he can do.
00:18:56
Michael
And in the end, Anderson controlled was one of the players who I thought controlled the second half with his running. And his particularly defensive ability I actually thought was fantastic. Didn't see much of that at Newcastle.
00:19:08
Michael
And he controlled the game. We couldn't really get too much onto it. And unfortunately, second half, that's as bad as it gets. But... Going into Liverpool next, that could be quite a good wake-up call. Because I think if you go into Liverpool on the back of a 4-1, you start thinking, oh yeah, we can match these here.
00:19:29
Michael
While at Anfield, maybe we'll just be a little bit more reserved and actually have bit more of a chance of getting at least a point.
00:19:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Look, let's save us for the positives and what we can take out of it going into the rest of the season. Obviously, we've got this massive game coming up. We'll do that in part three. I don't want to finish part two without, I don't know if you remember, one there one move, I think probably from our own corner or something, where the ball was played back and played back and played across Dan Byrne, who sort of tackled himself on the edge of the Newcastle box
00:19:38
Kev
That was my positive, yeah.
00:20:02
Michael
Yes.
00:20:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
and they were through, and the fellow behind me said, oh, Dan Bird, he's playing like someone's just giving him a bomb there, which was fabulous. I don't know where that nervousness comes from. They're 4-1 up. Well...
00:20:15
Kev
The fans? but i don't know it's just me, but the fans around me, honestly, i'm not so I'm not talking about all Newcastle fans here because actually, you know what, we'll probably justify the times, but the ones around me were so nervous after Sha hit their post,
00:20:18
Michael
I don't think it's just the fans.
00:20:33
Kev
Forrest got on top and were like, we're going to lose this. We're going to lose it. How? Make the change. mean I'm sat there and I'm like, well, 4-1 up? How on earth? Yes, we're not playing well. Yes, it's nowhere near our standard of the first half.
00:20:46
Kev
Yes, Forrest are doing a lot better. I agree with all them things. But the blokes around me, I was like, honestly, can you not just enjoy it while you can? Because eventually it's going to be 4-3 and it's going to be quite nerve-wracking.
00:20:58
Kev
Then you can be nervous. But at 4-1, it just started. And I was like, yeah, I just wanted to get an insight. you know me you know what i like to talk about
00:21:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've got two points I still want to make about that second half, which I'm going to overrun in part three, but never mind.
00:21:06
Michael
Yeah. Close.
00:21:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll just go a bit longer than we normally go. First of all, I'll be interested in what you thought of the performances of two of the Galacticos, who were pretty awful last week against Manchester City.
00:21:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm talking about Bruno and Sonali when he came on. Personally, thought Sonali was all right. He was trying to control it. He wasn't getting a lot of help from Bruno.
00:21:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought Bruno was slapdash and floppy and disappeared for chunks of the game, which I hadn't really seen before. But I think that's what happened at Man City as well with our captain.
00:21:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did you see the same things as me? Or was I just hearing the worst? And it was manifesting because I could just see Bruno giving the ball away.
00:22:04
Kev
I thought the first half, Bruno, was brilliant.
00:22:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
heaven.
00:22:07
Kev
I thought he actually controlled it quite well in the first half. But second half, yeah, he did kind of go missing. I think, I genuinely believe that when they came off of the second half, i were all worried about getting injured.

Injury Worries and Mentality Discussion

00:22:17
Kev
Cup final's coming up with 4-1 up.
00:22:19
Kev
Like, let's just not get injured. Let's just get the ball a away. We'll defend well. We'll keep it. And you could see, if you looked at the touchline, how in Tindall were going nuts from about minute 55. Like we weren't happy with how low the defense was, uh, line needed to be higher. We weren't happy with the wingers. They were too busy being central and he was calling them over quite a bit. And I thought, Oh no, that's not a good sign of how in Tindall look a little bit worried.
00:22:44
Kev
We can obviously spot what might be coming.
00:22:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
e
00:22:47
Kev
It might be a little bit of just, I don't want to get injured. I don't want to you know, miss the final. such a big game. It might be a little bit of that. But I also thought a big part of it as well is when we were defending, Bruno's used to defending alongside Joe Linton and Tenardi this season. He hasn't had a lot of minutes with Miley or Willick.
00:23:05
Kev
in terms of defending. Attacking didn't make a difference, but there wasn't a lot of chemistry there in terms of positioning, in terms of who goes and who drops, who stays. Obviously, Bruno was back in the six.
00:23:16
Kev
and So I think it was a little bit of both. I think it was a little bit of please don't get injured for the final. But I think mainly the majority of it was just lack of minutes together when trying to defend or counter a team alongside the two he had in midfield. But yeah, he could have been in better, but I struggle to criticise Bruno, if I'm honest.
00:23:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Michael, valid points or have I overreacted?
00:23:39
Michael
No, i I actually agree a bit more with you, Ian, if I'm honest. a I thought it was one of Bruno's worst games in a Newcastle shirt overall, if I'm completely honest. I think alongside Miley, he doesn't really work.
00:23:52
Michael
And I thought he was the worst of the three midfielders today by a distance.
00:23:56
Kev
Probably wasn't.
00:23:57
Michael
I think him and Miley... They do like to play quite similar styles. And a thought particularly when Willock went off, you're asking either Bruno... Let's be honest, that midfield three we have. You've got Joe Linton, the box-to-box sort of kind of bruiser kind of player.
00:24:14
Michael
You've got the Bruno, who number eight gets in between the lines. You've got Tenali in the six. With Bruno and Miley, you have two players doing exactly the same thing and there's no one really there to help break up the play a little bit.
00:24:27
Michael
And I'm not just saying this because I was a Bruno Guamara's yellow card away from 250 quid. A little coward not going into tackles.
00:24:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:24:37
Michael
No, but...
00:24:37
Kev
Didn't want to get injured for a final.
00:24:38
Michael
i's
00:24:39
Kev
Didn't want to get injured for a final.
00:24:40
Michael
It genuinely looks that way. Although if that is the case, I mean, i was going to mention mentality anyways, but it does seem like we have a shocking mentality at the club at the minute. And that is worrying because Eddie Howe and how usually has us absolutely spot on.
00:24:53
Kev
Oh, what a bold team.
00:24:57
Michael
But let's be honest, we only get ourselves up for big games. And that's not thumbs up again on the the recording. We only get ourselves up for big games.
00:25:07
Michael
The crowd as well.
00:25:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:25:09
Michael
And when it comes to being this far ahead in a game like this, we drop the ball a little bit. And sure, maybe in these games are the ones where you can, but Liverpool don't do that.
00:25:21
Michael
And if we do something like that against Liverpool, we could go from up, which delightful if we're anywhere near that, to 6-4 down in 20 minutes. and twenty minutes
00:25:32
Kev
it is It is human nature, Paul. It is human nature. And I think we need to... Look at the overall, all any of us, it I mean, at half time, I would have took 4-3 and it was 4-1 because Forrest are a good team.
00:25:43
Kev
They sat in the top four. We've had an unbelievable season. All the players are in purple patches. We've got a good result today. And yes, for it yeah I mean, he's absolutely bang on. There was a period of that game, which you're right, we we can't do regularly because if we do, we'll be in trouble. But we've got to take the roughest move, I think. And I think we've got to be aware of it is human nature to think of that upcoming final.
00:26:04
Kev
I think all of us would be in the same position if we were professional footballers. As much as I would like to sit here and say, oh, I'd still be going in 100%. I would be in tears if I got injured going into a tackle at 4-1 up and I miss Newcastle United or being in my team or a squad, which actually finally lifted a trophy, I would be devastated. So, yeah, it's not good enough, that period in second half, I agree.
00:26:27
Kev
But come on, we still won, we

Liverpool Match Preview

00:26:29
Kev
got three points. That's the main thing. That's the important thing. And we're sat in the Champions League spot.
00:26:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
That is the thing. let
00:26:35
Kev
well i mean there you go
00:26:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
let's Let's finish part two on that positive note. And I'll ask Michael, the prince of Zencasta, if he... Read us the Zencasta advert.
00:26:49

Pretty good, thank you, Prince Michael.
00:27:22
Michael
Thank you.
00:27:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not of Kent, Prince Michael of Prudder. Anyway, and part three. What positive can we take out of today's result, carry forward into that horrible Liverpool game that's looming on Wednesday and beyond into a really important cup game, another important match away at West Ham and then the finals?
00:27:45
Michael
Yeah.
00:27:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Positive, Kevin, positive, other than Lewis Miley's performance.
00:27:50
Kev
I've got a lot. I've got a lot. I agree with what Michael said earlier. and I think it is a wake-up call. I think Eddie was quite honest after the Man City game and said there was harsh words. think Bruno called us a shambles.
00:28:03
Kev
I think Eddie Howe used the word lazy and unacceptable. I think there'll be some harsh words again. Maybe not after the game because you have to kind of balance it. You can't just be too hard on the players. But I think... probably not tomorrow, but Tuesday in training, and and there will be a lot of harsh words and a lot of analysing ready for that Wednesday game of we cannot do that again. Exactly what Michael said, to be fair. think Eddie Howell will go down that route.
00:28:26
Kev
So i think that's a big positive.
00:28:26
Michael
Yeah.
00:28:27
Kev
It it' kind of almost... It doesn't guarantee there's no complacency because there's no guarantees in this league. But it does, I think, make it a little bit less likely going into Liverpool game. And like I said before, briefly, look, Nottingham Forest are having season of their lives and we've beat them the today. and Yeah, we had a period of a game where we weren't good enough. I 100% agree. But let's not forget how good we were in that short space of time. I actually thought the first half we were we were very, very good in the whole of the first half. and Both teams had five shots on target. We had 57% of a ball
00:28:58
Kev
We had pretty much 100 and something more passes than them. So, yes, on the scoreline and the ending kind of does take away the niceness feel of a win, what you normally get.
00:29:10
Kev
But we still have to be, you know, we look at it as a whole. Yeah, we weren't great the second half, but I think we still played very well in periods. And we did it with without Tenali and Joel Inton. Come on.
00:29:21
Kev
I mean, we're we're missing two big players today and we we've beat the team's sad third in a league. and at home. So come on, there's lots of positives there. We just need to leave the whole battering ram to Eddie and he'll sort that out that end. i think it's just, you know, one of them things, unfortunately, Newcastle this season do lack consistency.
00:29:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
All positives, Michael? Additional positives?
00:29:44
Michael
Yeah, I think Yeah, I think when you look at it, look, it wasn't good enough. Kev's just said that. But I think you look at Forest as a team, I believe we're going to be the only ones to do the double over them this season.
00:29:58
Michael
And I did see a stat that in the first half, yeah, yeah, we've actually beat them three times.
00:30:00
Kev
Beat them in cup, didn't I?
00:30:04
Michael
Although one on pens.
00:30:06
Kev
Yeah, still a win. Still a win.
00:30:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was trying, by the way, on my own. and just being looked at like an idiot. To sing...
00:30:15
Michael
Sounds about right.
00:30:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, it's once... twice...
00:30:19
Michael
For the crowd.
00:30:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
three times we've beat you... to the tune of Lionel Richie three times a lady, but nobody else would join in.
00:30:25
Kev
Yeah, that's not catching on.
00:30:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
They just thought I was doing a Lionel Richie impression, honestly.
00:30:31
Kev
and
00:30:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
so At least to entertain them in the second half, anyway.
00:30:34
Kev
it didn't help that you had Rolano Richie Afro on in my sunglasses but
00:30:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway.
00:30:39
Michael
We appreciate it.
00:30:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway.
00:30:40
Michael
We appreciate it.
00:30:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
anyway Anyway, anyway.
00:30:42
Michael
But.
00:30:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Other positives. Ben Botman must have been kept in reserve for Wednesday, don't you think?
00:30:49
Kev
I don't know how bad that injury might be worse than what we I don't know but Tenali one was weird wasn't it because Tenali was injured but when he still got on for about 20 minutes
00:30:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we could be doing the three at the back.
00:30:50
Michael
I hope so.
00:30:54
Michael
It sounds worse.
00:31:00
Michael
Yeah, I think it may be a sickness.
00:31:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think, was he injured or was he was he not a virus? Something like that. A bit poorly, he bit off colour.
00:31:05
Kev
it was illness, it makes more sense. There's loads stuff going online. You never know what to believe, but it was like a muscle scare or something. And i was like, if it's a muscle scare, don't chance him 20 minutes at 4-1 up. So, but yeah, that's what I was thinking.
00:31:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, that's true.
00:31:18
Kev
Why would you risk him at 4-1 or 4-2 whenever he came on? And I was like, hmm, was that just to rest him for Liverpool because he's going to big role to play? or was it a case of he is actually injured back?
00:31:27
Michael
yeah
00:31:30
Kev
I hope it's the first one, but I think it might be the second
00:31:34
Michael
I did see quite a nice stat as well, actually, after the game. Nottingham Forest have conceded 33 goals so far this season. 20% of them have been to Newcastle and United.
00:31:45
Kev
There you go. There you go.
00:31:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Marvellous.
00:31:46
Michael
So, that's pretty canny.
00:31:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Marvellous.
00:31:49
Kev
And i think actually one more positive thinking about it is we did gift them the first goal.
00:31:49
Michael
Yeah.
00:31:55
Kev
and And I also think the last goal, their third goal we gifted had Harvey Barnes head over near post. I don't know.
00:32:03
Michael
Yeah.
00:32:03
Kev
It's like he's glancing it on. just Just put your head on the end of it and it goes out for a throw-in. But... Yeah, we did kind of gift them two goals. I know we had other chances and three headers and it was more nerve what we wanted, but we did give them two goals and we still won 4-3.
00:32:20
Kev
And like I said before, without our, well, two of our most influential players, three you could argue with Botman actually. You could argue with no Botman, no Tonali and no Joel Linton and we still beat them after gifting them two goals.
00:32:32
Kev
Hey, here's some positives.
00:32:35
Michael
Look.
00:32:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Another project that was for me for Wednesday is that this week, Chelsea, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, and Arsenal have all lost.
00:32:45
Kev
We're
00:32:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we've won. So that's a little bit of keeping with pace the bank
00:32:48
Kev
in a Champions League spot as we speak.
00:32:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
keeping up with the pace in the bank If, you know, after our valiant struggle on Wednesday, we don't pick any points up against Liverpool, then, you know, nobody else, even if all four of them win, then they're only the same number of points in the last two games, aren't they?
00:33:01
Kev
beaten
00:33:08
Michael
Yeah.
00:33:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah, I think it'll be all right. I think it'll be all right. I think Potman will come back. I think we'll do the old five at the back thing. And I think we always have a close game against Liverpool.
00:33:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Would you make any changes? Would you bring Dubraska back? Because he was brilliant in that.
00:33:23
Kev
Oh.
00:33:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
When we got hammered last year, we got hammered 4-2, but it could have been 14-2 if it hadn't been for Martin Dubraska last year at Anfield. He was brilliant that in that game.
00:33:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Would you bring him back?
00:33:37
Michael
I have to say no, because the one thing Liverpool going to do is they're going to get shots off. You want your best shot stopper there. And I'm aware of today's evidence. You could probably argue it ain't Nick Pope.
00:33:51
Michael
But I think it's one of those where you want your best players playing, particularly in that cup final.
00:33:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:33:58
Michael
And if today if the last couple of games have been any sort of instance, Nick Pope is a little bit rusty. So we need them up to speed before that cup final. It's what are you' going to prioritise.
00:34:11
Michael
The Premier League, where Liverpool at Anfield, probably going to extend the lead at the top to 14 points because Arsenal have rolled over again. Or the Carabao Cup, where we could end.
00:34:23
Michael
i've I've lost count of how many years it is of Hurt.
00:34:25
Kev
seven
00:34:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:34:27
Kev
Well, domestic 70. You know what? Nottingham Forest sang Champions of Europe. You'll never sing that. We won you with a cup in 1969. Yeah, good point. Yeah.
00:34:35
Michael
And most the people singing it weren't alive.
00:34:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah but also, but they're they're not they're not factoring in the fact that we'll get around this PSR thing sooner rather than later.
00:34:38
Kev
yeah and
00:34:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And therefore, we will buy a Champions League winning side.
00:34:50
Kev
yeah
00:34:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully, in my lifetime. Look, we're going on and on and on, aren't we? Should we pause? There are still so many things to talk about. though i think
00:34:58
Kev
i was I was just going say about the the team, I agree with Michael about Pope.
00:34:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:35:02
Kev
I think Pope just stays as number one, unless he has an absolute torrid time and you need to take him out of firing line.
00:35:06
Michael
Yeah. Yeah.
00:35:08
Kev
Look, it's so important for a goalkeeper to be sharp. It's probably the most important position in terms of sharpness and match fitness and readiness. He has to be ready for that cup final because he's going to have a big part to play. Whoever plays in goal is going to have a big part to play. Let's hope not suspended like last time.
00:35:25
Kev
But yeah, I think Pope's got to stay. The other one, don't... Do you bring Trippier back in? He's the other one for me because I know he he yeah he had a terrible game against Man City.
00:35:35
Kev
He did. There's no denying that. And I thought Tino did okay today.
00:35:38
Michael
Thank you.
00:35:39
Kev
But there's times when we are attacking in the first half and when we need a little bit of calmness in the second half and Tino's receiving the ball with his back towards goal... Or he's just panicking it right back and lumping it down the line. I'm thinking that's where Trippier would just put his foot on it, maybe go back to Shaw.
00:35:56
Kev
We might get caught out in concede. I'm not going to say it's guaranteed to come off every time. But a lot of a time with Trippier, apart from Man City, because that was a torrid time for most people, and he does bring a lot of calmness. And I think a big game away at Anfield, calmness might be needed at right back. So he'd be one I'd be thinking about, but it would be quite harsh on Tino. He did okay today.
00:36:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he did fine and I think pace is more important than calmness if you're playing Liverpool at Anfield I think you've got to have you know speed at the back and Lewis Hall speed at the back because you've not got a lot of speed with Starr and Stern
00:36:16
Michael
yeah. yeah.
00:36:22
Michael
yeah
00:36:30
Kev
If you go five at the back, well, you've got Botman, Shah and Byrne. You could have Trippi as a wingback, I don't
00:36:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
if we If we do. If we do. If we do. and Assuming that Tonali's sick and Bruno keeps his place, which one of Willock's or Miley's covers for Joe Linton after today's performance?
00:36:47
Kev
well know. Oh, two best players, did he?
00:36:53
Michael
I think it's Willock. I think big game, he's got to trust the more experienced heads. And personally, if yeah we get to an hour and 15 minutes or whatever it is before the game and Miley is there, I'll be a happy man because personally it's what I would do.
00:37:10
Michael
But I think in a game like that, experience and to be honest, Willock has a lot more legs than what Miley does.
00:37:18
Kev
Yeah.
00:37:18
Michael
think that's going to be the more important thing against a Liverpool team that will look to run us over.
00:37:23
Kev
Well, Trent tries to bomb forward, doesn't he? So if you can get Gordon tracking him, Willock can almost exploit that that space on the left wing.
00:37:26
Michael
yeah
00:37:30
Kev
He can do that kind of transition into a left winger and kill them in that area.
00:37:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:37:33
Michael
Great point.
00:37:34
Kev
So but that's why I would go Willock because he loves to get out wide. And I think with Trent, even though Trent is technically a fantastic footballer, defensively still leaves a lot to be desired.
00:37:46
Kev
and
00:37:46
Michael
Yeah.
00:37:47
Kev
So for me, I'd pick Willock for that reason. I think he's more likely to expose that space on the left of the three. and But it's very harsh on Lewis Maide. But look, he's still young.
00:37:55
Michael
That is.
00:37:55
Kev
And like Michael said at the very start, we're going to have a lot of years hopefully watching him. and But I think for the Liverpool game, yeah, it's it's it's Willock. If he's fit and he's raring to
00:38:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
If there's any justice, Bruno will drop to the bench. If Miley will play the number eight role on today's performance.
00:38:11
Kev
go.
00:38:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
It won't happen. But if there was any justice... No, I probably would keep Bruno in, to be fair.
00:38:20
Kev
Probably.
00:38:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Yeah.
00:38:21
Kev
Just probably. Been amazing for three years.
00:38:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Probably.
00:38:25
Michael
I can see where you're coming from, though. Bruno was put, and there he looked like he's mildly excellent.
00:38:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
other...
00:38:27
Kev
he did have a he did love he didn't have his best game, but yeah.
00:38:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
my other A bit of encouragement, which might have been... I'm glad I didn't watch the Man City-Liverpool game today, because I think I would have terrified myself. But... Liverpool haven't been up so much in the last few games, have they?
00:38:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
They suckle to beat Wolves 2-1. They've all got points at Everton. Got points at Villa.
00:38:49
Michael
Yeah?
00:38:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Could have lost that.
00:38:51
Michael
Lost to Plymouth?
00:38:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know? Well, yeah, that team that they put out lost...
00:38:54
Kev
Well, the second team will.
00:38:56
Michael
Yes, I know, I'm having a joke.
00:38:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But there... But yeah, I mean, I know they keep picking the points up and they're so far ahead it doesn't seem to make any difference.
00:39:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
But they're in a bit of a situation like Manchester City when we thought, oh, we might be able to do something because Man City aren't as fantastic as we remember them.
00:39:05
Michael
Yeah.
00:39:10
Kev
It's Salah, innit? Just keep Salah quiet.
00:39:13
Michael
Yeah.
00:39:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
But maybe Liverpool are in a similar situation and but and we could actually do a little bit of a surprise. Their big game in the league this week, of course, would have been playing away at Man City.
00:39:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not at home for Newcastle, who they always turn over. maybe Yeah.
00:39:25
Michael
Yeah.
00:39:29
Kev
See, if it was a game of football manager, I would completely sacrifice the three points on Wednesday, play ridiculous team so they get no scouting or any information on us. i play I'd play a 2-7-1-2 with a tackle harder formation and just play the cup final, play our normal.
00:39:39
Michael
Tackle harder. Nah.
00:39:46
Kev
This isn't what we're lined up like in the Premier League. We haven't prepared for this. But unfortunately, football in real life doesn't work like that. But yeah.
00:39:53
Michael
I would tell Longstaff to go two-footed in the back of Mo Salah, though. Get a 10-game ban.
00:39:58
Kev
End Salah.
00:39:58
Michael
I don't care.
00:39:59
Kev
End Salah, yeah.
00:40:00
Michael
Make sure he doesn't get that record as best player because he is on track to get more goals and assists than any other player in a Premier League season.
00:40:00
Kev
End them.
00:40:08
Michael
and So, Sean Longstaff, you've got a job
00:40:09
Kev
I do love more Salah, but yeah.
00:40:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah me Maybe

Final Thoughts and Future Outlook

00:40:12
Michael
to do.
00:40:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
you just have to...
00:40:12
Kev
You have one assignment. Agent Sean, you have one assignment on Wednesday.
00:40:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Let Sean Longstaff take the field holding a club or a knife or something.
00:40:21
Kev
Not a knife.
00:40:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
He doesn't be...
00:40:22
Michael
We've re re-signed Joey Barton!
00:40:22
Kev
We wouldn't advocate a knife.
00:40:25
Kev
Bring back Joey Barton. Yeah, he'll he'll do it. He'll sort it out. He doesn't like Liverpool.
00:40:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, so we're all feeling good. but Have we gone up fourth in the league?
00:40:34
Michael
And no, fifth.
00:40:34
Kev
We're fifth, but that's the Champions League spot.
00:40:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fifth.
00:40:36
Kev
We're joined fourth, but we are fifth, so we're still in the Champions League place right now.
00:40:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Champions League. Excellent. Yeah. The other nice thing about about Wednesday is that Arsenal play in Nottingham Forest. So one of them is not going to get any points. Or maybe they'll just both get one.
00:40:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Which is also nice.
00:40:50
Michael
I was going to say, what do you want to come from that?
00:40:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway.
00:40:51
Kev
but're We're getting three.
00:40:54
Michael
Would you want Arsenal to win so we get closer to Forest or draw?
00:40:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
though I think Arsenal, maybe I'm speaking out turn here, but I can't see Arsenal scoring again this season. Who's it playing against? Mikel Marino?
00:41:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think Arsenal are going to completely implode and they are definitely in my sights if we can go on another nice run.
00:41:09
Michael
Yeah.
00:41:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I know after this Liverpool game, we have got a string of games which we could put a run together.
00:41:20
Michael
Mm-hmm.
00:41:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
If the team that's left to Ripswich turns up to play these little teams, and that's the team that turned up to play West Ham, Bournemouth and Fulham. Look, I've found lots of things to be positive about.
00:41:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
so i think yeah i think we just have to go and dream of captaincy qualification with but picking a cup up on the way tonight.
00:41:43
Kev
two cups we are second favourites for the FA Cup actually second favourites for both cups that's weird isn't it
00:41:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm leaving with those happy thoughts.
00:41:51
Michael
Yeah. It's not great.
00:41:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll win both of them.
00:41:54
Kev
it's brilliant
00:41:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you very much for joining me, Kevin. Thank you very much for joining me, Michael. That was a delight. You can tell in my voice, can't you? No, it was. It was fun. Thanks very much. We shall thank our listeners for tuning in and trying to pick the bones out of a very strange game.
00:42:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But thanks for listening, and we'll see you the next time.
