Hosts Reunite
00:00:17
Speaker
Hello and welcome back to the Off The Tips Podcast.
00:00:21
Speaker
Not quite a full house, but AC and I are going to, we're back in the studio. It's been a few weeks and it's good to see my mate on the other side of the world all cozied up. How's it been going, mate? Good, mate. Not a lot to really add to that. It's good to be back behind the mic. It's felt like a long time between drinks. So looking forward to talking about some golf.
Lost and Found: The Golf Club Story
00:00:44
Speaker
Um, I must say I'm going to let the listeners know my, I had a nine iron turn up to my house today.
00:00:50
Speaker
Not my 9-9, but I've ordered one off eBay, identical. So, happy days. I don't have to work on my knockdown 8-9 at the range anymore. Yeah, for those of you that are maybe new listeners, AC Left is 9-9 at Golf Course City. What, you don't actually know where you left it, did you? It could be an island. I don't know whether it's in England or Ireland, to be honest. It's how often I've been playing golf. I just have no idea.
00:01:18
Speaker
It's gone nonetheless, but it's good to hear that you've got it back in the bag, mate. Yeah, happy days. What have you been up to?
End of Cricket, Return to Golf
00:01:27
Speaker
Oh, mate, not much really. You know, the cricket season wrapped up over here, which is, you know, I'm pretty happy with that. Ready to lay low and, you know, get back out on the golf course. All stations preparing for the Hillary in April. So look, I'm
00:01:46
Speaker
I'm going to be back out there, but apart from that, mate, just chipping away, writing some dribble, that's about it. I understand you're back in the workforce and how's the new gig going?
New Job Adjustments
00:01:58
Speaker
It's all good, brother. There's a real adjustment period going from unemployment to working, but we're in a rhythm now.
00:02:07
Speaker
looking forward to just the days are starting to get a bit brighter now. I was walking home from work today, 6.30 and the sun was just going down, which is great for over here. So looking forward to maybe some golf after work as well on the horizon. So it's all good, mate. Morale's good right now. Oh, that's great to hear.
TPC Sawgrass Preview
00:02:31
Speaker
You know, we're heading into a big week at the players. We're obviously a late recording this week, you know, time zones. I'm sounding like a broken record. Time zones don't line up, but so we're recording on a Thursday, but the players around the corner, are you looking forward to the week at TPC Sawgrass?
00:02:49
Speaker
Absolutely. I love this event. It's obviously not the field it was with the good live players gone. But I just love a familiar layout too. You feel like you know the golf course. It encourages like some shot making too. It's not sort of that standard sort of bomb and gouge sort of setup. Really kind of weird course to predict one is too. It's sort of
00:03:15
Speaker
It sort of doesn't favor one person and previous success there doesn't mean anything really. And you just see so many people just eject themselves too. So yeah, really looking forward to it. It's going to be interesting. I think it's time that a few more of the big guns stand up. What about you?
Player Performance Analysis
00:03:33
Speaker
Yeah, not much to add on that. I was going to talk about the big guns and who you maybe like around there this week. You know, you're coming in.
00:03:42
Speaker
off the back of finally hitting a punt. It feels like maybe our first one at about four months. So who do you fancy around the iconic loop? It's hard to go past Scotty after last week. Just clinical performance, putted well, which is what we've all been harping on about and looking to see.
00:04:09
Speaker
Yeah, that's interesting. The other the other players that I think might have a good week, Willie Z's been trending. I punted him last week. He's just been playing great golf. Wyndham Clark's another one that keeps going around at good odds. I also punted him last week. I was all over the board last week, mate. By the way, I was I was very confident
00:04:29
Speaker
the day before because I knew I had three in play. But I'll digress on that. And yeah, I don't know. I'm really wanting to see something out of Rory and Vic. Those are the two. Rory's driving the ball the best he has since 2016, but his approach play is the worst of his career. So that's, at least he's got one area of his game that he really needs to tidy up. And then Victor, I just don't know. He just hasn't got off the bus this year.
00:04:57
Speaker
Yeah. And did you see those pink pants he was wearing last week? Oh my God, they were loud. He looked like a highlighter. It was, but
Scotty's Game Improvement
00:05:08
Speaker
yeah, I'm, I'm pretty bullish on Scotty this week. Now these, you know, started to roll the rock a bit better. And it just makes me like that last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, like when he was using that mallet and it was just pretty much making everything. I was like, man, like why did you not put this in play eight months ago?
00:05:27
Speaker
Yeah, I must admit, we didn't do a pod after Riv, but that just looked like the final straw, didn't it? He was so frustrated, so unscotty-like, who's normally very unflappable, he was throwing his putter, he was cursing himself. I think he was kind of...
00:05:46
Speaker
I don't know, lying to himself a little bit maybe until that point. Like obviously he was working hard and was putting, but I think he just thought it was going to come around. And then that was obviously the catalyst was like, man, I need to actually do something a bit different here. I know that's the read I got. Yeah, I'm similar. I think I think he must not be, you know, real keen on change. And when he was going through that hot street,
00:06:14
Speaker
maybe or last year, the year before where he was using the Scotty and maybe just didn't want to let go. And like you said, maybe Riv was the final straw, but man, everything looked really, really good on the, on the greens this week. And I don't know if it's just a honeymoon period or, and it's maybe masking some of his other floors, but man, it looked great. And that's a tough scene for his competitors going forward. If, if he's going to roll it like that every week.
00:06:45
Speaker
Mate, if he putts half decent every week, he could finish there with five, six wins. And that's not exaggerating. He's just hitting the ball so well. And the ball striking's been so sustained too. It's not something that's just peak now. Like it's been an 18 month sort of two years thing. So yeah, look out, I'd say. And a few of the other guys need to step up and pull their fingers out too.
00:07:12
Speaker
Yeah, just barely anyone can hang with him on the ball striking front. It's incredible. And it's just been like you said, it's been such a long term thing now.
Golf vs Tennis: Excitement Factor
00:07:20
Speaker
But is there anything else tickled your fancy on the PGA tour this since we haven't been doing, haven't been recording? Not particularly. It's been quite tough this year, hasn't it? One thing I was thinking about today is
00:07:37
Speaker
Do you reckon the top players have a bit of fatigue of all the live and PGA Tour drama? Do you think that's why this year we've seen some of the stars just not really front? Maybe. Look, I don't know.
00:07:56
Speaker
why it would affect some of them, you know, like it's, it should be doing almost the opposite, but you know, those guys on the advisory board and stuff like that, I can, I can imagine it, it starts to weigh you down a lot, but man, I, I'm not sure we saw on full swing, you know, there were a few guys pretty, and we'll talk about that in a bit, but a bit frustrated. But man, I don't know if that's an excuse for the big guys to not be fronting up at these tournaments.
00:08:27
Speaker
yeah yeah that's fair i i don't know i think maybe they there's that there's just the lack of juice and events and maybe they're sort of not mailing it in they're trying to win tournaments but i don't know if they're quite locked in and i'm interested to see if a few just sort of peaked for majors this year um the other thing that i saw at arab pama which was sick was um
00:08:52
Speaker
JT, not JT, Spieth hit about two or three where he just hit them off the map and they were just going for water and he just would reach for a provisional before the ball had even landed. It was just, he just doesn't know where that thing's going. Yeah, that's tough to see at times, man. We know how that feels just when your ball's just fucking going nowhere but from- Yonder. Yeah.
00:09:23
Speaker
Mate, I'm kind of touched on it, but I'm not happy with the kind of the state of the professional game at the moment. It's really hard to, you know, flick on every Sunday morning and sink your teeth into when, with all due respect to the guys that have been, you know, up the top of the leaderboard, it's apart from, you know, kind of last week, it's like, man, who are some of these guys? And look, I work in golf and it's hard to
00:09:52
Speaker
even look I don't know who half these guys are sometimes and it's just hard as a fan particularly to flick on and and watch that it's like it's kind of like being an NRL fan and tuning in and watching like Wigan play Castleford. That's not a bad comp actually it is tough and I think
00:10:17
Speaker
The time I almost noticed that the most is when I go to look what we're going to do for weekly punts, and you just look through the odds board and you're like, oh, this is the field. And just not having Cam Smith, John Rahm, Neiman, Kebka, I probably missed a few sprinkled around, you know, and like within that sort of $40 range. It just looks so thin on paper as well.
00:10:42
Speaker
And this just needs to be sorted out. I know we've said it and harped on about it, but it's just disgusting for the fan at the moment. And golf shouldn't be just majors. I love majors as much as anyone, and that's how I judge the good players on it. But you still have to, I don't know, surely 10 other weeks a year where you can get excited about it. And I used to.
00:11:09
Speaker
It's starting to just literally turn into tennis. Like, like, I know, like I'm a very, very casual tennis fan, but you, most of the people you run into aren't following the ATP tour year round, but, um, but you tune in for the Aussie Open Wimbledon, Roland Garros and the US Open. And man, I feel like golf shouldn't be like that. There's.
00:11:37
Speaker
There's more storylines and crack a tennis by any means, but like, I feel like they have such an opportunity now from, for what's gone, gone on and what's happened to create all these blockbuster storylines. And, and man, it just seems like they're not going to do it. Like there's virtually no movement on what's happening with any merger. You know, rumors are flying around that.
00:12:05
Speaker
that liver going to back out or the perfect going to back out. So, and it's just, there's so many uncertainties and it's, it's really hard to get around. And I feel sorry for the fans because not only are we the diehard fans like you and I starting to lose a bit of interest, but man, what do you think the casual fans doing now? Like that almost essentially going to be gone to the guy.
00:12:33
Speaker
Yeah it's hard to argue with any of that. The thing as well like not having cricket, like you were mentioning not to have a cricket tennis but the thing that golf has that's over tennis is that you actually get quite a diverse group of winners. Tennis for a major you can kind of pick out quite a, you know, there's probably a handful of people that can actually win it and you might get the odd surprise packet like golf.
00:12:57
Speaker
You know, you've got so many possibilities. So, you know, they, in theory, it should be more exciting the year round. So I just hope it, as you say, it doesn't turn into tennis, but it is heading that way. Hmm. Yeah. I just, well, it's like you feel so helpless as well, because, and there's only, you can count on one hand on the planet, the amount of people that actually know what's going on.
PGA Tour's Future Concerns
00:13:25
Speaker
If we've lost guys like you were like Brooks and Neiman and John Rahm to the PGA tour forever. I don't think that's it. Well, I know that's not a better product than what it once was, but we'll move on because we could, you know, we could go around in circles about this topic all day. But before we, you know, talk about full swing, I'd like to,
00:13:53
Speaker
have a chat about AK.
Anthony Kim's Controversial Return
00:13:55
Speaker
Anthony Kim made his return while, you know, the weekly pod was on a hiatus. Um, initial thoughts when you saw that AK was about to tear it up on, on live golf? Honestly, I didn't really care. Um, yeah, I just, I just think it's just been so long since he played that I don't really get what the hype was about.
00:14:23
Speaker
And maybe that's because he was very much in the infancy of my golf watching. But yeah, I don't know. It's, hey, like I'm, I just hope that he didn't get like coerced into it. I hope he actually wanted to play. It's probably the, the, the thing I'll say. Um, but hey, all the best of them, like if he does end up playing well and that'd be good for the game.
00:14:51
Speaker
Yeah, I know what you mean. There were myths going around about Anthony Kim like he was a Tunny Far or the Loch Ness Monster. He was just this myth that once existed and then he pops back up and he runs kind of having a crack at his appearance and stuff. He's obviously had it.
00:15:19
Speaker
some issues or an accident or something because he he doesn't look real healthy but look I like you I say I hope he this is a genuine that she needs is needs to scratch and look his first four rounds were really tough and then you know he he found found something in that last round at Hong Kong and shot five under so
00:15:41
Speaker
He obviously can still clearly play. He hasn't played for 12 years to have the second best round of the day at an event that had DJ Brooks, Jon Rahm at it. Fuck, pretty impressive. So look, I'm kind of in your boat. It doesn't really... I was never an AK guy and like you said, I was a young man when he was playing and not watching a whole heap of golf.
00:16:10
Speaker
I was just disappointed that we didn't see the belt buckle out on the lip. Yeah, that would be good. Well mate, Full Swing got released and I had to watch it and review it before it hit the punter screen.
'Full Swing' Series Review
00:16:27
Speaker
So I got a really good look at it and analyzed it. But before I talk about what I thought, I want to know
00:16:35
Speaker
your thoughts. I don't know how we're going to do this. We probably can't go episode by episode but I think let's just kind of wrap it up as a whole.
00:16:43
Speaker
I thought it was better than this first season. I don't really enjoy the sort of episodes where they do like a player profile. I thought this season the first two episodes were great and the last three were also awesome. The JT stuff, the Ryder Cup stuff, I thought they were the clear standouts for me.
00:17:06
Speaker
the sort of character episodes didn't capture me as much. Like I still found it entertaining enough, but I don't know. Through no fault of their own, it just feels like a bit staged and you can kind of tell they're uncomfortable around the camera. And I would be too. I would absolutely brick myself. And there's no way I'd be acting the same in front of it because I just think it would be such an unnatural thing to do.
00:17:34
Speaker
Maybe what we can do, Cal, I want to hear your thoughts as well first, but after that, maybe we can just do some likes and dislikes. Okay. Um, yeah, well, my thoughts on the thing as a whole was, you know, relatively entertaining, but I was, I came out of it none the wiser. Like I didn't really learn anything from what I was watching, you know, it was,
00:18:03
Speaker
It was pretty lighthearted and a good watch, but I couldn't necessarily like not take my eyes off the screen. I thought like I, the Joel Damon episode was okay. Like I think he's a great character and you know, but like you said, I see that the individual stuff
00:18:28
Speaker
Yeah, it's not quite as good as when they're going into the Ryder Cup sanctum. I thought that, I didn't think many of the first episodes were great. I thought it was massively saved by the Ryder Cup at the end. I thought those episodes were really, really good. Yeah, that's fair. Yeah, I did like the first two. I thought they were really good.
00:18:55
Speaker
I don't know. I don't really like the mucking around at the house stuff. I'd rather sort of see. I don't know but I just don't think golfers do that very well. That's probably the way to say it. But in terms of things I liked I thought
00:19:13
Speaker
I don't know, some of the funny things, I found some of it quite funny. Like the Joel Damon one, just, what new folks do is they try sort of put like a theme to the episode and the Joel Damon one sort of was about fame in a way and that was just, that just made me giggle.
00:19:30
Speaker
Like, dude, like, no one, unless you're a sicko golf fan, he can walk through the airport and no one would know who he was. And there's all this chat about being famous and stuff. It's like, yeah, you might have a few people cheering for you on the golf course, mate, but you're not famous. Like, I just made me laugh.
00:19:50
Speaker
Yeah, that's a fair point. Like you, you can go down to your supermarket and do your groceries, mate. And, and no one, no one, unless they've come off like a country club golf course and they're picking up some rice for their family on the way home or something. Yeah. I felt that you got anything? I didn't.
00:20:15
Speaker
I didn't like, I didn't love the Tom Kim episode. It kind of, it kind of felt a little bit like, um, when they were going through his house and he was showing off his Thomas the Tank Engine shrine, it kind of felt like MTV Cribs. And then he was rolling around on his moto chili bin, which I thought was
00:20:44
Speaker
And five minutes before that, he said, I just want people to take me seriously. Dude, you're driving a chili bin around your house. Yeah. Oh mate. Well said. And then I did, I did appreciate when they went to the open and you know, like he had a bit of, he has a bit of dog in him with that, with that ankle injury, but like just, yeah, I didn't enjoy that episode so much and not necessarily that
00:21:12
Speaker
Does that mean I don't like Tom Kim? I still think he's a good player and a decent character and they probably need a few more characters like him because he does give you something, but yeah, not my favourite ep over the two seasons.
00:21:31
Speaker
Yeah, and I fear, I actually feel a bit sorry for him too, because you can tell he's one of those guys that golf's just been his absolute life.
Ryder Cup: Behind the Scenes
00:21:40
Speaker
Like, Turned Pro when he was 16, never really had a childhood, so I think
00:21:45
Speaker
Um, he's just probably a little bit behind in that area that you'd normally be at that age. And it was interesting. He said, he mentioned he didn't have a lot of friends. He didn't have his parent. I noticed this obviously his parents weren't in the episode and he's only 2021. So there was, that was sort of like an observation of mine too. Um, yeah, there was some, there was some good stuff too. The other, the thing that I loved was, um,
00:22:10
Speaker
We kind of knew it, but Zach Johnson just looking like a deer in headlights. Hey, what a pelican. He had no idea what he was doing.
00:22:21
Speaker
We needed to ring them up and he goes, I don't envy anyone in this position. I'm like, mate, you are the guy. Like that's not how the phrase works. Um, you are in that position. I was like, dude, you're just a clown. He is. Um, what are you, did he, he called?
00:22:50
Speaker
Someone jaytizzled in there. He called JT jaytizzle. Not sure about that. Yeah, look, I think the the Keegan Bradley stuff was was quite good. How they did it. Like, I didn't need to fucking see the Ryder Cup suitcase with my own eyes that that's constantly talked about. God, that's stupid. And then them bringing him to
00:23:21
Speaker
to obviously tell him that he wasn't in the Ryder Cup team. You know, the rumors are that when he saw the cameras turning up, he thought that he must have been in and he wasn't. So, you know, even though not a massive Keegan guy, that's a little bit tough to see. But look, that was quite raw and quite well done by Netflix, I guess, like a little bit fucking ruthless.
00:23:47
Speaker
Mate, that's just the way professional sport is and how the cookie crumbles sometimes. Like, yeah, shit doesn't go your way sometimes. And sometimes you get shown some faith like they did with JT. But man, the main thing to come out of it for me, well, especially in the Ryder Cup stuff was just like how much of a douchebag Joey LaCarver is and how much of a champion Shane Lowry is.
00:24:17
Speaker
Oh, Shane Lowry. I'd run through a brick wall for that guy. Yeah. Fuck yeah. He just seems like the ultimate teammate at that level. Whereas like that hat shit was so stupid as well. But go on, I see. Yeah. A couple of other things I liked outside of the Ryder Cup was I thought the Rory stuff at the PGA was quite raw. They didn't,
00:24:44
Speaker
I don't know if he knew the camera was on him at that point when he was sort of blowing up to Harry and stuff saying that he's shitting himself to left pins. He feels like he can top 10, but his game wasn't where it needs to be to win. And he said, like, talked about a potential reboot, total reboot. So I thought that was quite, like, good insight. That was something that I kind of learned.
00:25:08
Speaker
Yeah, and then the other thing that I thought, even just the casual combo him and Ricky had about like moaning about the darkness at the US Open, that's something we don't really see with the lenses on the coverage we get. So, yeah, there's little bits and pieces, but as you say, you don't learn heaps as a golf sicko. The other good one, I think JT's drive-by of Mido was probably one of my highlights.
00:25:37
Speaker
yeah that was brilliant yeah for those of you that haven't seen it and like just a proviso there'll be a little bit of a spoiler here so maybe turn your headphones down if you if you haven't seen it but they do this PGA champions or the PGA championship champions dinner and JT the defending champions doing a toast and does his toast and then
00:26:03
Speaker
toast to Mido Pereira for just fanning that one into the piss at Southern Hills. So at Southern Hills. Yes. So, but that's pretty funny content. And I think on the whole, it was a decent series to watch, but, you know, just probably fantastic for a casual fan.
00:26:31
Speaker
Cal, I don't know why you sort of mentioned spoilers there because we've already given away about six. So I don't think the JT one would have changed anyway. Oh, yeah, actually fair point. Before we spoil the entire series, do you have anything else or do you want to move on to some playoff holes, mate?
00:27:00
Speaker
I think that's all I have. The one thing just before we move on to player files is I just looking for something from Foxy.
Humorous Mishaps
00:27:07
Speaker
Where's he been? I'm not sort of going in his golf game, but I just feel like I haven't heard maybe it's because I'm over here. I haven't heard much about him or like I haven't seen many posts. So I just, I don't know. I'm looking, it's been a very quiet year for Foxy and I'd love to see him get in contention this week.
00:27:31
Speaker
Yeah, it'll be good. Does TPC Sawgrass sue down there? I'm not sure. I don't think so. But if you want to mix it with the best, just go front up wherever it is. So yeah, I'm hoping for something from Foxy this week. I'm really looking forward to the players, which starts, well, as we're recording, starts tonight for me.
00:27:59
Speaker
tomorrow morning for you. So look, I'm really looking forward to that. We'll rip into our playoff holes, AC. No teeing off from me, but is there one from you? I've got a tough scene. Yeah, I've got a tough scene too. I might reserve my teeing off. You go first though, brother. Oh yeah, my tough scene was I was just on my way to work the other day, you know, on the loser cruiser.
00:28:28
Speaker
the uncle Gus, the bus. And I was just peering out the window. We're at the lights and opposite us, a bloke just opens up his car door and proceeds to yak all over the road and then just shuts his door, wipes his mouth and carries on. And it was a
00:28:54
Speaker
It was a Monday morning, so the big feller had obviously had a bit of a tough weekend. So I was like, oh, brother, that's hard to see. But look, really, he was on his way to work. He was in a dress shirt. So man at night, man in the morning, you know, that's the sort of stuff. Oh, that's tough. Yeah, so that's actually, I was going to tell this on the pod a few weeks ago, but it didn't happen. Um,
00:29:23
Speaker
I'm in recovery mode, I'm fully recovered now, I think. But I was coming back from the gym and I was like, okay, I'll stop in the supermarket to get some ingredients for some steak sammies for dinner. And so there's no bags at the supermarket. So I kind of had to do the big rapier.
00:29:47
Speaker
wrap your arms up and sort of bundle it and like cuddle it into yourself and so I was walking home all good and we've kind of got these stairs down to where our apartment is and it's probably they're a flight of about 10 I'd say and it was a wet day and
00:30:04
Speaker
They're outside as well and so they were pretty wet themselves. And so since I was kind of cuddling my groceries, I couldn't see where my feet were landing and I've just slipped out from underneath me and I've just taken a massive slide down the stairs. I whacked my back and I just threw the groceries up to get my hands down to sort of brace my fall.
00:30:30
Speaker
So, groceries everywhere, steak, tomatoes rolling down the thing. Yeah, and I was just sort of sitting, lying at the bottom of the stairs, just groaning. You know, and you get winded, and it's like, you get winded, but it's through your back. It's like a different sort of winded feeling. I had that. I'm glad no one saw it, because it would have been incredibly embarrassing. So, I had a sore back for a while, but I think it's good now.
00:31:00
Speaker
But yeah, that was my tough scene. Sober, too. Dead sober. I'd love to see... Is there some CCTV footage floating around of that? There could be. If so, get that in our DMs. Fuck, that's brilliant. Nah, but... Were all the groceries all good? Yeah, they were, actually. Yeah. Oh, that's alright. No, it was sweet. The tomatoes were a little bit soft. Nah, eggs would have been tough.
00:31:30
Speaker
Oh yeah, it was all good. Well mate, that's a brilliant way to finish at the comeback episode. You know, I appreciate you staying up and catching me before I head into the office. So cheers guys for tuning in and you know, we'll be back next week and enjoy the players championship.
