00:00:14
Speaker
Hello and welcome back to the Offer Tips Podcast. it's It's a major championship week which fires the lads up to no end and fresh off the plane from Dublin is AC. AC, do you want to run a listeners through your weekend in Dublin in a couple of kind of sentences just to kick off the US Open Week? yeah Hey cow, hey listeners, yes, um just got off the plane on Sunday. A sentence to describe it, I don't know, a lot of Guinness drunk is probably all I need to say. um Yeah, we it was a bit of a hit and run

Golf Talk with AC

mission. We got there late Friday night, about midnight. And then so we just went went to bed to save ourselves up and yeah, we ripped it on Saturday. um
00:01:02
Speaker
Yeah, the guts have been a bit stirred up from the Guinness the last couple of days, but I'm feeling i'm feeling fresh now. I'm ready to go. That's it that's a lot of it's a lot of yeast from the fellas. There was a couple of numbers of Guinness drunk floating around. do you Do you want to disclose those to the listeners or are you going to keep those a bit closer to your chest? I'll keep those close to my chest, I think. yeah Let's just say, between seven of us, we raised the bat. wow And the helmet. Yeah, and the helmet. No, that's great. what a What a part of the world. i you'll You'll love to hear it. Yeah, it was good fun. What have you been up to, mate? Have you played any golf?
00:01:51
Speaker
Yeah, oh in between kind of some tough weather and and Sydney I have got out and played some golf and the listeners would be pleased to know that that I'm hitting the ball pretty nicely actually, rolling it okay. So I've had a couple of and decent rounds and I did have a tough day at the lakes, where io ah but I only got 12 holes in. So I did have some holes where I could have made it made it up, but it was not happening that day. But yeah, I've been hitting the ball for well. i been been around seeing seeing some great courses around the New South Wales region. So hopefully I can keep that up and and keep playing mate because I've semi got the bug back. I ah kind of fell out of love with playing a little bit last year and I've been enjoying getting out on the course regardless of what I'm scoring. So that's that's great science for me personally.

Upcoming Golf Trips

00:02:43
Speaker
stuff, brother. I'm glad you you're getting out there and playing and enjoying it as well. I must say at the moment, I'm quite nervous about Scotland. Obviously looking forward to it. and It's under a month now, but I have played since Ireland in July, I've played three rounds of golf and I'm about to play like 10 rounds in a row and at some of the best golf course in the world. And I'm just a little bit, I just hope that I can get like fine, roughly find the middle of the club face and enjoy it. So yeah, I'm i'm a little bit worried. I'm going to try and get out on Sunday. That's, that's the goal this week. I just need to get some sort of reps under the belt.
00:03:25
Speaker
That's gonna hopefully just maybe maybe your first 36 holes might be but might be tough, but hopefully you know you find something after that because... How good is like a golf trip to a great part of the world? ah yeah I was hoping we'd have like an island. We had one sort of practice round at at ah and like a cheaper sort of layout. But first up, I've got North Berwick, which I have a feeling it's going to be my favorite golf course I've played. I just look at it and I just think that's that's my type of golf.
00:03:59
Speaker
And so that's that scares me. I just hope I don't get the shanks or anything like that and just can actually really play the course properly. Just golf your ball around, mate. You'll be fine.

But I say, should we have a look at the memorial briefly before getting into the main course? Yeah, why not? um Good week. It's good. The signature events I still, I can enjoy, I think. Just Scotty. just I don't know. We keep talking about him,

Golfing Achievements

00:05:42
Speaker
obviously. um He's managed to knock off
00:05:46
Speaker
Memorial Bay Hill, the players, he's won at Hilton Head. He's won at Augusta. That in itself is like what a career someone would dream of and he's done it in one season. All sorts of venues. Course fit doesn't matter. Just going into this week as a red hot favourite and he's just so hard to beat around this week. Oh, yeah. He is just like, I, I don't really see a world where he isn't winning this week or if not wanting like in contention, right until the final hole. Like it's, like agree it's almost, it's almost pig tiger sorta sort of form. ah That's what it feels like. But yeah.
00:06:39
Speaker
ah The memorial, it was a good event and, you know, Colin Morikawa had him by kind of the scruff of the neck heading down the final holes, but it just wasn't to be for Colin as he's kind of found himself in situations like that all season. It just kind of hasn't happened. But yeah, rather than talking about the golf tournament, because we're going to talk about, you know, one of the bigger golf tournaments of the year coming up, I just want to ask you a question about the cause, A.C. Like, Muilfield Village, as I'm sure we're on the same page about, it's one of the best venues on tour all year. Do you think that they could play a major championship there, a US Open or or PGA?
00:07:26
Speaker
Yeah, they could. I think maybe a PGA. I don't know if I'll have a US Open there. i yeah i don't I like it that it tests the players but it's not it's not the most enjoyable golf to watch. It's yeah it's quite one dimensional and there's a few few good holes but it's a little bit like Bay Hill where there's a lot of chipping out of rough ah and that's how like that's how you test the players at this level. It's um it's it's hard to find courses long enough these days. so
00:08:03
Speaker
but yeah i I don't know if I'd want to see a major there. and Mainly because you just see the course a lot as well. I like it when they have it at a course that's not on a p regular PGA tour stop. So I'd probably say no. What would you say? Yeah, I would say yeah. It would be probably a PGA venue if it's anything. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed this week a lot more than I enjoyed Valhalla and, you know, Bethpage and that sort of, it was it was quite similar to it to a Bethpage, just Bethpage is probably a mere field on steroids. But it was, yeah, I enjoyed watching that type of golf sporadically. Like I know, like when, well, I'm not a big fan of, you know, the the heavy colors of rough around greens and stuff like that. But every now and again, it it is good to see these guys tested it that way. So yeah, i in short, I think we could probably, see a PGA championship there. It's not on the rotor, so I don't think we're ever going to see it. But yeah, I think it was just something I thought of while I was watching this week. The one thing you do see at Merrifield is that, and unlike we saw at the PGA, is you can make big numbers. And I think that's always good. And like you want to see pros, if they must badly they end up with a number on their card, I think it's it's important. So ah that that aspect of the golf course is is great.
00:09:29
Speaker
I agree. And a huge fist pump from Scotty on 18, which you love to see the big fella getting involved. that's It's probably not quite in his character, that sort of thing. So it was good to see he was pumped up for to shake Sir Jack's hand. so Exactly. um And is he a Sir? No, I just made that up. yeah but yeah I don't think any Americans can be sir. Oh yeah, that's what I thought.
00:10:02
Speaker
That's some rubber. I should say Mr. Nicholas.

Pinehurst US Open Memories

00:10:07
Speaker
Mate, we'll rip into the U.S. over at Pinehurst, but i actually just quickly before we do, our cane listers would know that last week ah we were pretty disappointed in Lyn Grant's performance of AC called for to see more from her and she must have She must have been listening on the plate over to Sweden because she delivered. I want to go to hometown, the Scandinavian mix, to become the first woman to win on the DP World Tour twice, which is and c incredible. A Sunday 65 and an absolute melt of the highest order from Sebastian Soderberg, which is, you know, it's good to see Lindgren getting back in the winner's circle, as we kind of talked about last week.
00:10:51
Speaker
I actually watched a whole lot of the the Saturday there. We were in the sports bar and we were there very early, as you can imagine. And so that was the only thing on and I just parked up and Lyn Grant was absolutely flushing it that day as well. ah So I actually probably watched more of that than I did of the memorial. Yeah, it's a good week and it's ah it's a good change up and something. I know we've spoken about a lot but there needs to be more of combining the men and the women to play some more events and they could definitely do it at a higher level as well. They could get some of the real heavy hitters involved and maybe in the States or take those guys down to a different country. It'd be great. But mate, Pinehurst, an event that I've been looking forward to for a long time. We're going to see lots lots of content from Michael Campbell this week on social media, which is going to be great. But mate,
00:11:48
Speaker
I'm not sure you'll have many, many memories from 2005 when Campbell famously tamed Tiger, but if you do, let me know. Or is it probably better to ask you about Martin Kaimer's win there in 2014? I've actually, I've, last night I probably for an hour and a half just did some research. I watched a lot of YouTube of Michael Campbell's win, Martin Kaimer's win, and it's amazing. I think from ah the thing I only really remember from Michael Campbell's is just the um
00:12:22
Speaker
He had the Kourou designs on his on a shirt that week. It was very kiwi. um But the thing that's amazing between 2014 and 2005 is just how much the course changed. I see Kourou and Crenshaw went in there and sort of restored it to how it used to be, which has like the the sandy sort of waste areas, the wire grass. Looks much better now. It looks so much better. It looks great. I think they did it ahead of the 2014 PGA and it just was a totally different looking golf course and Martin Kimer won that one by eight. I remember that vividly, just him putting from everywhere.
00:13:06
Speaker
He had the chipping hips and he just putted literally everything from off the green. And when I watched last night, what a golf swing in his prime. He was striking the shit out of it and he's leaving people in his wake. And anything inside 10 foot just seemed to just go into the middle of the hole. Yeah. He went on an absolute tear through that period. hey It was very similar to like a Jason Day and like it was just that like short period of just absolute dominance. Well, he sort of went in too. He had the, was it 2011 PGA I'm going to say? No, maybe 2010 maybe, but he he was number one in 2010 I think and then 2014 he won the players and the US Open.
00:13:58
Speaker
ah so Sneaky good career, Martin Keimer. Yeah, very good career and and far, I wouldn't say far from over, but had a really good finish at the, well, he never a really good finish at the PGA. He was in the mix at the PGA for a little bit before finishing, you know, in the seventies. Mate, my memories from 2014 are not really about about the golf as such. It was Like Martin Conner played really well. I remember on the coverage, they just kept mentioning the turtle back greens, which were just, geez, that loved getting around, talking about the turtle back greens. So I'm prepared for more of that this week. And yeah i I vividly remember Ricky Fowler donning the long socks in round two, in honor of Payne Stewart. Are they called the plus 45s or something? ah yeah
00:14:58
Speaker
Yeah, he rolled out. I think it might be 44, 45. don't know. It doesn't matter what the number is. It might be four. I think that was sick. I was a big fan of that. And obviously, I remember Martin Kimer kind of running away with it. I'm pretty sure he went by five heading into the the final day. And then it was just, yeah, it was pretty much, all it was similar to Harmon at the Open. And then ah just watching back, this wasn't really a memory. I ah i was watching back as well. but earlier today at work and I saw Keegan Bradley on the last day was sporting some of the more egregious kit of all time. The bright red shoes, white pants, red hat, red red shirt combo. He looked like the Polish flag. That's what he looked like. it was it was so weird kit There was some weird around that year.
00:15:55
Speaker
Um, yeah, like even the ones Rory won one and we're pretty ugly. Those Nike sort of colored, there was the purple one and the pink one. Uh, yeah, that golf fashion was at its worst that year, I feel. See, I'm firmly of the belief that maybe Rory needs to bring some of that kit back to be able to win a major again. He kept me roaring in a flat peak.

US Open Contenders and Predictions

00:16:22
Speaker
Yeah. um What else have we got? The the course, um expect to to play firm and fast this week? Yeah, I think there's no rain forecast, so it's going to be crispy. I saw Wyndham Clark came out today and said that already borderline, which... You love to hear that. Yeah, you do. But I think like just ramp them up. I want these to be ridiculous this week. oh i'll see I want pros moaning. that's That's what you want to see. Yeah, I agree. it's I'm really looking forward to a proper test after Valhalla. You're obviously going to have... I think like it's not going to be...
00:17:10
Speaker
three over par though, it's going to be like 10 under, eight under, but it's going to be, it's going to be a different test and it's going to be, I think there's going to be more consequence for miss. More of your off, you're going to shoot a number, but there's definitely going to be low scores out there too. It's not overly long and with it playing firm, there'll still be a lot of short irons into greens. Yeah, there will be. And it's not like a traditional US Open venue either. there's gonna There is plenty of space, but it's going to be absolutely paramount that yeah you leave yourself in the right spot to score well, really. like You can get yourself into some serious predicaments even now that all that rough that we saw in 2005 and 1999 is gone.
00:17:56
Speaker
because like like you said, Crenshaw and Caw were commissioned there and I think they took out 35 acres worth of rough. So like that is, that's a fuck ton. So look, I'm um'm really looking forward to something different. It's been a decade since we've seen the men there and it'll be interesting to see how different the pros play compared to 2014. Yeah, the other thing with that rough is it's it's quite patchy. It's got other sort of tusky looking things, but you can also end up just with a sandy lyre that's fine or you can end up just boned. It's a real, it's not like one where it's like the US opens
00:18:38
Speaker
in the past where there's like knee deep rough and you just hit it in the end, you know you're going to be screwed. There is a bit of chance that you actually will be fine. And that's sort of ah an intriguing part of it. And it's a little bit of luck, but I think, you know, over a week that we'll just even out and it's not going to be a big deal in that respect. Hey mate, since it's been a decade, I'm putting you on the spot there. Do you reckon you could name every US Open winner since Martin Kimer? Uh,
00:19:09
Speaker
or
00:19:11
Speaker
yes, I heard I could. Um, how about, how about I say we try to go year for year on this. Okay. Just to, to speed it up. I'll start 2015. 2013 was Rose 14 climber was 15.
00:19:37
Speaker
Spieth? Fifteen was Spieth at Chambers Bay. I've just thought of that then. um It was. Sixteen. ah When did DJ win? Was that later? OK, I think it was DJ. I think it was DJ at Oakmont. I'm locking that in. Seventeen was Kepka. Shinnekov, one of the greats. Yeah, it is DJ. Um, 2018. I a ah don't know. I made a loss. Did. Does kick her again? Wasn't it? Yeah. Did kick him in turn a row. I think he might've. And then it was Gary Woodland was 2019 at Pibble Beach. Yeah. The one that Ram won at Tori was that 2020 or what? 21. It was 21. And then Bryson at Wingfoot 2020. 2020.
00:20:35
Speaker
2022 was... Where was that? I can't even think of where that was. We've got all the we've got the hard ones. Oh, was it was Fits at Brookline. Of course. Yeah, one of the great great US Opens in 23, obviously, Wyndham Clark at LACC. We've done okay there. That's going to take some proper editing from the production team because we dribbled around a bit there. That was pretty good effort. We should probably do something like that a little bit more. I enjoyed it. But I've got a couple of fun facts from 2014. There's a rogue.
00:21:24
Speaker
name on the leaderboard there, Eric Compton, not to be confused with Eric Clapton of Tears in Heaven fame, but i watched I watched him play a couple of few holes this morning at that US Open. Did you get a good golf swing? I was really surprised that I didn't didn't see more of Eric Compton, straight out of Compton. I don't know that brother. And before we look at the field for this year, it was a i A sneaky good finish at Pinehurst last time from our man, Marciel Seem. Get that on record.
00:22:04
Speaker
that night let's it let's look Let's look at the the prime suspect, so to speak, and I think, should we just go Scotty versus the field sort of thing? I think it clearly fits him, and he is the absolute man to beat. But yeah let's look let's look elsewhere. We won't dwell on Scotty. We know how good he is. A couple of names for me that I like. I feel like there is something brewing with Morikawa.
00:22:36
Speaker
And you can't keep scaring it this often. And it's ah it's a ball strike as paradise. And he is just that. So I think... I had him as my number two seed as well. T3 and T4 in the majors this year. Second last week. Games there should suit. I think he he's got to be front of mind. um Anything else on Colin you want to add? Nah, I'm pretty content with with him that he's going to be in the top 10 at absolute worst this week, ah to be honest. There were a couple of other names that popped to mind that I think fit is obviously Ludwig Eberg. I think he's going to be
00:23:25
Speaker
a feature around here. He's starting to get a bit, bit healthier. He was hobbling this week. He was reading putts like Brooks. I'm a little worried. Yeah. Okay. Okay. He still played well. So he still played well. So I don't know. And he was a bit funny about his interview. So not sure. Yeah. And another guy played well this week that I have a sneaky kind of outside bit on his son, J.M. I think. I think he, I don't know what it is. I just like him around there, hitting the ball really well. Like every time I watched him this week, just flushing it and it's been, eye test wise, pudded the lights out for me. I just, I just like the way he's rolling the rock ah without having the stats in front of me. So yeah, I think if if you're looking for a sneaky outsider, I think Sung JMs are a huge sniffer shaking this thing up.
00:24:26
Speaker
nice um brooks is one that is very disappointing at the pga uh this isn't his typical sort of us open setup that he's thrived at but he did finish t4 here in 2014 and he actually that was the start of sort of brooks kept the major player he he qualified through wilton at wilton heath to get into the us open and finish t4 that year um so Interesting the interesting thing there. It was just the the start of the absolute dog. That was Brooks Kepka still as a dog I I don't know if I'm gonna bet back in this week. I think I might try Get cute and back around in there Yeah, like on paper like you said it doesn't fit him but he's just a guy that you can't rule out at these things like he He'll just get his ball in the hole
00:25:22
Speaker
Yeah, well given he finished T4 here, I don't think I can say it doesn't fit him either. But as it hasn't been the traditional golf course where he's thrived at, I guess is what I was saying. um Anyone else you want to call out? Yeah, i saw a few nine I just want to look at, we can look at them as a as a trifecta, that three live guys, Jon Rahm, Cam Smith and Bryson de Chabot, Jon Rahm withdrew from the live event last week and injured. So that is never a good lead up to a major when you're withdrawing the week before, whether it was really precautionary or not. I'm not privy to those details, but look, um, I, I don't have a feeling about Ram this week. It's a, it's a golf course that on paper would like look pretty good for him, but it's yeah. And i'm I'm kind of out on Ram at the moment. I couldn't back him.
00:26:18
Speaker
Neither. Neither. i this There's nothing to suggest to me that yeah he's a bit this week. You go.
00:26:28
Speaker
yeah guys I was really bullish on Cam Smith um leading into this week, maybe over the last kind of six to eight weeks. I thought like this is a golf course where you can kind of you can be really creative and and he obviously putts better than most. but And T 43 last week and he was tied with Anthony Kim. That is probably not the greatest leader. that is not the form one at all he He absolutely lit himself on fire. I think there was one round where he had a couple of triples and a double. Yeah, I think he had 80 on the last day or something. It was ah it was not good, but yeah. i look i want to I want to see something from him this week, but man,
00:27:17
Speaker
he just has He hasn't been playing real well, man. It's it's it's tough to see. Have you got any thoughts on Cam Smith before I um i look at look at the big golf course? I would say that the course he played last week is just going to be nothing like this and maybe this is what he needs. But it's just, it's hard to, he's playing okay and he played all good at Augusta. The game can't be, maybe the game isn't that far away, but maybe he just doesn't get up for live events. I don't know. I'm i a little bit worried about him though, I think.
00:27:56
Speaker
I just hope that his career trajectory is not going to just keep going down, going to live. He's a bit of a lifestyle guy. I'm just speculating. um I just hope he fronts up this week and has a good week. I don't know what to think either. I've been kind of calling this out as a good course fit. I still think it's a good course fit. It's just where there is games there and I'm not sure it is at the moment and I might not back him. I need to think about that and I need to probably pour through some of his other live results and just say see where the game's at. Zander.
00:28:33
Speaker
another one. Great US Open record. He hasn't. His worst finish since 2017 is T14. Pretty impressive. It's the only time he's been outside the top 10 since that period too. It's a heck of a record and he's obviously the last major champion. So it's hard to Hard to, like, bet against him, really. I think the only thing is, is just chef might be too good for him, really. But he's playing great golf. Yeah, but like you said, there's there's big numbers out there for everyone, isn't there? Like, like it Scotty could easily just have a bludger on a hole. But it's just so hard to to see him missing. But, yeah, Xander, obviously the most recent major champion
00:29:27
Speaker
played well again this week. Yeah, it's a US Open specialist, so to speak. Yeah, it's it's hard to kind of argue with that. And just back to Bryson, ah what do you think about him this week? I'm going out on a limb here and say, if Bryson's in contention this week, I could be all Brysoned out for the year. That could be enough for me. But I think you have a good week. He's been playing well in the majors. There's games there. I'm in on Bryson. Let's hope he has another good week. It's fun when he's in the mix. I'm slowly coming around, I think. I'm slowly. Yeah. In terms of personality-wise, I'm coming around to him. It's just like a fever dream watching him play every round. It's tiring. It's like... It is. It's just shit happening left, right and center.
00:30:25
Speaker
But it is. And your brother actually sent me one of the great one of the great videos of him talking about how he shaves his legs to to gain speed, which I think got hunted around in the ah preview part of the PGA as well. It was it was good. Oh, so funny. Like you're wearing pants, brother, most of the time. So I don't know how that checks out. But I suppose that's funny. But you went on Rory this week. Mate, I'm out. I just don't think you'll win. I don't think you'll contend and I just, I'm out. Okay.
00:31:05
Speaker
I hope I'm wrong, but I just... I don't think he's... I don't think he's in control of his golf ball enough to beat Scheffler or Zander. That's where I'm at on it. I think he'll be somewhere in the top 15 though. I think he will be... Yeah, five top 10s in a row in the US Open. He's been playing pretty good golf in US Opens of late. so Yeah, I think he'll have a good week, but he won't win. Yeah, I personally couldn't touch him with a 10-foot pole, but it also, and the contrary to that, it wouldn't surprise me if you won either, but it's not something I'll be- Oh my God, that is some, that is some, that is some flip-flopping.
00:31:56
Speaker
Oh, mate, you can't say you're out on them and then say it wouldn't surprise you, you won. Oh, okay. No. Okay, he won't win. I'm not coughing that. He won't win and I don't think he'll even be in the top 10 then, if I've got to take a hard stance. Okay, yeah, there you go. Thanks for... I apologise for that. Thanks for pushing me into that.

Pinehurst Challenges

00:32:21
Speaker
I needed it. I needed it. Yeah. But mate, they are all the names I had kind of written down. for this week. I don't think there's really much to to add on the on the player front, but have you got any any other kind of words for the US Open? Just holes to look out for the third hole. It's short par four. Think of the back
00:32:47

They'll play long just at about 390 yards but they'll probably push it up a day and try and make it drivable. Really cool green complex, a lot of consequence if you miss that green. The par 3s as well, 9 and 17, they're nice par 3s, they'll be good to watch. And then coming down the stretch, 16 is a bit of a brute. So that will be There'll be a bit of a test that you've got to pass to win this golf tournament coming down the stretch. ah The other thing to look out for is they've left the collars a little bit shaggier to try to stop people doing what Kaima did. I think you'll need to chip a lot more ah this time round. So a little bit like they do in Augusta where the fringe is a little bit longer. So putting is a little bit trickier.

No, um, I was going to say about when you say move the T's for, they did that a lot in 2014 on, on quite a lot of T's on Sunday, which was pretty epic. So I love that. You know, it gives, gives guys the opportunity to to try run someone down. If it's, if it's a situation like kind of was, and just what I've, I remember is like missing long of greens at Pinehurst is fucked essentially. So you probably just don't want to do that. Yeah. I'm looking forward to it. I'm hoping we can, we can see some whinging from players. That will be, it's always a good test. Yeah. Big on some sulky press conferences. Hopefully just whinging about the course. Like, come on boys, just play what's in front of you. But, mate, I think that's, that's all I've got from the US s Open. did Do you have any, any playoff holes this week? Nothing from me. Nah. You?

Yeah, i've got ah I've got a couple of tang offs this week. um First of all, I'm teeing off on Ted Scott's moves after he won the memorial that um we'll post to our socials when this pod goes live. ah Hopefully it's still out. He just did some of the most disgraceful dance moves with the the flag from the 18th green, which, geez, that was tough to see. That guy that guy continues to go from bad to worse and in my books. I don't know. I just simply cannot cop him.

He seems so weird. that's That's all I'll say. Yeah. And and my other one was, um this I could just sound like a windy old man here, but um I'm so off all the like golf hypotheticals on social media. like Okay, what ones are those? like give me like like Before... Oh, would you rather play around with Tiger or...? Oh, those, yeah. Those, those. But I'm more talking about, like, the... What would ah what would an 18 handicap shoot around here and they go ask all the all the pros? by Like, it's just some of the... some of the poorest content of all time. Not to mention there's, like, 30 shots differences between some... some answers. And other ones, like, i the worst one I heard was...

Do you reckon like you could win the Masters if you start, if you started on the green, but from the furthest point from the hole? I was like, it's just like, it's just like the dumbest thing of all time. I'm pretty sure it worked out. If you had like 3.5 putts per hole, you'd shoot like 36 under or something. Like, come on. Yeah, yeah. That could be some of the worst maths of all time. I saw that in the comments and have done none of my ah out of my own I was trying to check that out of my head. You're the numbers man. I think you're off. there yeah oh Anyway, but anyway, regardless of whether I'm right or wrong on the maths front, it's just, I don't know. I struggle with that content and it's just everywhere.
