This week's random drawing took Josh and Tyler all the way back to 1984, the year of George Orwell's delightful tale of love and joy in what looked like 2026... Yes, were were over the quicksand pits but the threat of nuclear bombs lingering kept us dancing with tears in our eyes.

Josh loved some Gary Numan and Tyler loved Blow Monkeys and we both loved some Thompson Twins 12" extended remixes.

So listen in and if you remember a song from 1984, you can also tell us about it right here! https://www.speakpipe.com/GenX4LifePodcast

Introduction to Gen X Music Podcast

00:00:00
Speaker
Okay, so here we are again. um i just wanted to tell everybody, this is Josh, by the way. this is that TV sound. This is going to be all about music. um Gen X music, the stuff that we grew up on late 70s, 80s, and some of the 90s, although neither of us have ever stopped loving music. And I'm here with my guest host, Tyler.
00:00:23
Speaker
Hey, everybody. And I just wanted to say that I've been drawing the years randomly. So that's why the years are just kind of all over the place. I wanted to do something a little bit different. I didn't want to do anything in order. um My memory's shot anyways. I never remember absolutely anything. But the good thing is Tyler remembers absolutely every single thing Yeah.

The Year 1984: A Musical Milestone

00:00:44
Speaker
So I never have to worry about that because he'll also remind me of things like, you remember the time we had a fight at the specials and we had to go to the specials concert? Yeah. I don't know. I probably shouldn't have brought that up. Remember that $40 you owe me? Totally.
00:01:04
Speaker
Well, just take it out of the 12 I just sent you. So, yeah, so they're they're randomly drawn. This week is 1984. This is a big one, and I'm thinking and we probably got lots to talk about because it was a big year.
00:01:20
Speaker
But um hey, before I kick that off, let's ah let's just get right to the the the theme song. Here we go.
00:01:43
Speaker
You're listening to That TV Sound with your host, Josh Downing, a Gen X for Life podcast.
00:01:56
Speaker
And that's just to get you warmed up. I wish that we could actually play music snippets and all that kind of stuff, because i think that'd be really fun.

Challenges with Music Snippets in Podcasts

00:02:06
Speaker
Yeah, it's kind of annoying when you watch others play like just odd samplings and it's like, you know, they can't really play the chorus or whatever, but it's also kind of like, eh, you know,
00:02:19
Speaker
Yeah, I just don't want to get into it because then some some providers and some ah some hosts and that will not allow you to run your podcast if there's even a hint of somebody else's stuff in it. so Maybe we'll have to hum it. How about that? Come along with Herman.

Summer Memories and Music of 1984

00:02:37
Speaker
Remember that one? Yeah, that's it right there. And if I ever switch to video, it'll be cool because then I can do things like hold up the record I've got it. yes but you'll have to blur out everybody's eyes or something totally just put those black lines across yeah yeah yeah i think you're allowed to show stuff you're just oh yeah you can to play it right yeah because you know i could be making money and i'm not absolutely making right yeah so hey 1984.
00:03:11
Speaker
Somebody was making money in 84. I'm looking at you, Prince. Well, yeah, that's the only person who was making money in 84. No, that's not true. There were some big movies in 84 too. Oh my gosh. Right. But, uh, yeah, it was a big year. So where were you in 84? 84. The funny thing about 84 is it's when I think of that year, I don't think about winter. I think about summer and you know, when I was a kid,
00:03:38
Speaker
It just seemed like it snowed every day forever. But for some reason, I think about 84, I don't think about

Personal Reflections on 1984's Culture and Fashion

00:03:43
Speaker
snow. I think about summer, which is actually nice. I don't really think that with other years, um, back then. Um, and when I think of 84,
00:03:54
Speaker
I don't think of my own music immediately. I think about what was dominating, oh which was, I don't want to say, want to include Prince in that because I love Prince, but like, but Prince, the cars, Tina Turner, go-go's, Cyndi Lauper, was all this American stuff. that was just like pouring down on us. And it's like, no, thank you. um Aside from Prince. um But that's what I think of when I think of 84, you know, especially the cars. Like, you know, know they're a beloved band, but like that version of them that year, i just, I couldn't escape them. You know what i mean? What was the song they had in 84? I can't remember. Oh, You Might Think and Drive and... Yeah. They were huge. But like in 84, everybody was huge. Everybody was huge. You know, like just incredible. you know what I mean? Just like that to me is, it's not one of my marker years, but it was such a year of music. You know, like nobody could be any bigger if they tried. Duran couldn't be bigger. Wham couldn't be bigger. Culture Club couldn't be bigger. It's like, my gosh, all these juggernaut bands with like,
00:05:09
Speaker
you know, chart topper after chart topper, it was just like, wow, you know, music was here. It was big and inescapable. And if you weren't into music, it's a shame. know what mean?
00:05:22
Speaker
You know, and if you were, my gosh, you know, there was a lot of choice outside of chum, you know, but man, what a year. And the funny thing is when I think of 84 and I think of summer, I think about Walkman,
00:05:38
Speaker
speakers there were the speakers that you could put into the like the headphone jack of your walkman and you can have speakers on your walkman yes your batteries in radio shack and it was really tinny but it was just like wow i can listen to my homemade tapes with speakers on the way home from school yeah yeah You could carry your music around. You could play your music. So you were in what, the grade nine?
00:06:04
Speaker
and I would have been grade 10. Grade 10. Well, I guess it's both, right? For me, half grade nine and half grade 10. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, totally. So um so things were just kind of really starting for you in 84.
00:06:20
Speaker
I don't know. Like 84, everybody was kind of either blowing up too big or had already disappeared, you know what I mean, or starting to disappear, you know what I mean? Like Soft Cell put out their third album that year, and it was pretty much ignored, and then they were gone.
00:06:41
Speaker
yeah you know So things that were so important, you know, 79 83, were gone. you know And now you're looking at a little bit of new music a little bit of new artists, you know some people jumping ship and going elsewhere. you know it was It was a decent year for me. um But yeah, as a teenager, you know at 15 basically, it's an important time when you're living and dying on every 7 and 12 inch that comes along.
00:07:16
Speaker
you know and And albums were pretty decent back then too. It wasn't just about the singles. like Usually a full album was pretty good. You know what I mean? But how about you?
00:07:28
Speaker
no Big year for me. Huge year for me. USA for Africa? Sorry. Maybe that was the next year. Sorry. that was that that i sorry it was It was a huge year for me because i was that was grade 12. Oh, wow. it was I was going to graduate that year.
00:07:48
Speaker
Um, I, Oh my God. So much was going on. I i started my, my grade 12 year with my, um,
00:08:00
Speaker
my platinum blonde mohawk with the glass beads in my tail and the craziest clothes. Like we were dressing like right out of British and Japanese fashion magazines. We made our own clothes. It was just, it was all about how much could we get away with.
00:08:21
Speaker
And how far from the American eighty s you could totally Yes, absolutely. no and we We had our own sort of group. I was in a really big high school, and we had this huge group of new wave punk, ska kids, mods, and we took over the third floor at the school. So we had sort of a safe space where we could go that we rarely got beaten up.
00:08:47
Speaker
um And we had sort of established ourselves. So we people just kind of ignored us at that point. We had our own teen club that we could go to on the weekends. But by that point, I was already dancing at the Love Affair downtown Vancouver. And that was our Blitz Club. Like that was it.
00:09:05
Speaker
you know, one of the best sound systems in North America. was in the twilight zone here. Yeah. And they had flipped from a disco in the 70s to picking up all the British sounds coming out of, you know, right out of London. And it was just an amazing experience.
00:09:24
Speaker
So weekends were most often there. And it was... You know, what hair can we do? What makeup can we do? um Can we steal some black eyeliner from, you know, the truck store?
00:09:38
Speaker
Because we were so broke at the same time. I used to cut people's hair for money so that I could die so i could buy records and music and and thrift for clothes. It was an incredible year.
00:09:49
Speaker
i I was in love and i I had so many amazing friends and it just it just seemed like it was a nonstop party.
00:10:01
Speaker
It kind of seemed like that's how it would always be. because there was no reason for it to change. Right. Why

Influence of 'Fame' and Theater School Decisions

00:10:07
Speaker
would that end? Other than nuclear war. Well, and that was our big fear. Yeah. Nothing nothing was coming that was going to change any of this. And this is how you would live forever. Yep.
00:10:17
Speaker
You know, you would get a a decent job. you would You'd have that cool loft apartment with an elevator in it. You know, you live very well and just party and buy music. Yeah.
00:10:27
Speaker
It was very easy. Yeah. It was absolutely incredible. And that, so I graduated, um went I traveled to Toronto for the first time right after a high school finished. So my first couple of weeks of summer was me visiting my two best friends in Toronto and fell in love with the city. And that's when I was like, one day i'm going to live here because this is an incredible city. It was a great time for Toronto. Yeah, it was really amazing. It offered everything.
00:11:01
Speaker
It had everything. Yeah. And then when I went back, Vancouver felt small. It felt kind of like a resort. And even back then, it was you know everybody had geared up for Expo. That was what everything was going to be about. Right.
00:11:16
Speaker
So I just was like, okay, so now what do I do with my life? And I was just full of excitement and ambition. And at the very last minute, i just decided i was going to go to theater school.
00:11:28
Speaker
That was all there was to it. I was going to go to theater school. So I went to i went to the college. and uh it was like i think it was the Friday before the Monday where classes started that's how late I left this no clue that I was even going to do this said no idea did not know how much it was going to cost and uh basically knocked on the door of the of the uh um and't I don't know guess she's the the teacher who ran the the theater program And she kind of was like, what do you want? And I said, well, i want to I want to get in the theater program. And she laughed for five minutes because she's like, well, we did the auditions for this season two years ago.
00:12:06
Speaker
Oh, my gosh. Right? Because it was a brand new program. And it was a massive amount of people wanted to get into this program. But a friend of mine had already been in the first year.
00:12:16
Speaker
And so I'm like, well, what do I have to do? Like, you know, and she's like, well, normally I would audition. We sat and talked for like two hours. And at the end of it, she said, here's your papers. Go in and, you know, get this paper filled in. Go pay your your dues and we'll see you next week. Okay.
00:12:33
Speaker
So I lucked out. And it was like, see, the world is mine. I can do whatever I want. And

Favorite Albums and Singles of 1984

00:12:40
Speaker
yeah. it just It was amazing. i So I went to theater school. That was my dream. I was a fame kid.
00:12:46
Speaker
Fame TV series started that year. So it was all lined up. Was it that? No. Yeah, it started 84. That late? Yeah. Yeah.
00:12:58
Speaker
Oh, my gosh. i'm Yep. like Please forgive me. I'm looking that up. are yeah I just read it. Oh, my gosh. Maybe I was looking at my 82 notes.
00:13:10
Speaker
that That sounds better. Oh, no. Uh-oh. This is going to be another fight that we're going to settle at the... My credibility is absolutely gone. 1982. It is 82. have notes for all kinds of stuff going on. So you're right.
00:13:27
Speaker
Who cares? back was already if i was already a famed kid. so Back then, like when you're younger, those years would just be huge apart. Like 82 to 84. What? That's a century. Three three different lifetimes I lived. Yeah, exactly. 81 84.
00:13:43
Speaker
so yeah it was exciting music was everywhere music was everything we did we getting ready to go out we were playing records non-stop extended 12-inch remixes of absolutely everybody and hairspray and eyeliner had clothes everywhere all that gel and all that hairspray oh my gosh Totally. And so fortune yeah we had the hair dye and the bleach.
00:14:12
Speaker
My friend and I would have a get ready hour and it would just be just getting ready. And we every single piece of clothing we owned would just be in a big heap by the time we went out the door.
00:14:23
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Get ready hour was fun. And then we'd get in my my Pinto wagon and drive to downtown Vancouver and nightclub.
00:14:33
Speaker
Yeah. Just club, just dance. ah Right? The world was amazing. Sure, it was going to blow up. Somebody was going to blow us up. Yep.
00:14:45
Speaker
But we were going to live everything up the last minute. We will dancing. We will totally be dancing when the bombs drop. Yeah. Yeah. So 1984, big year.
00:15:00
Speaker
was your artist, your song, your music? Oh, gosh. um i think I think my two big albums for that year were The Blow Monkeys, Limping for a Generation, and Thompson Twins, Into the Gap.
00:15:19
Speaker
um I think those were my two favorite albums. And I don't know... they're they're they're not similar so i can't say one's better than the other they're different but those would definitely be the biggies um for singles definitely man from russia by blow monkeys and to be honest last christmas by wham i can't lie you know um it's it's a perfect single um
00:15:52
Speaker
and then i thought about videos like videos were so huge right yeah so i was like okay well what were some of the really good videos that year and i think berlin's now it's my turn was probably my favorite video and that's coming from an american artist and even their um no more words video based on bonnie and clyde that i love i love that movie it's like well i can't deny They did a great job and they're not too bad.
00:16:23
Speaker
And even um ABC's How to Be a Millionaire, the animated video, you know that's that's a really good video. So you know ah and there was just it was such a jam-packed year. you know And then I was thinking, like well, what was my favorite limited edition that year? And I'm like, oh well, Blush, that's easy. That would be Bananarama's Hotline to Heaven 7-inch that came with a puzzle. I loved that release.
00:16:57
Speaker
And I was trying to think of like what was my favorite 12-inch. um I don't know if I had one that year. Maybe I didn't. Maybe I didn't. i can't That's not even a thing.
00:17:10
Speaker
um I'm just trying to quickly think. Because there's they have to be really special. You know what I mean? like i I appreciate every 12-inch. But like they have to be.
00:17:22
Speaker
Like, Romeo Void's Girl in Trouble was a really interesting 12-inch. Because they gave it that drum beat that wasn't in the single. So it's like, okay, that's pretty cool. know what mean? So otherwise, you know, a 12-inch is a 12-inch is a 12-inch. You know?
00:17:39
Speaker
um But yeah, I'm like, oh, let's talk about it. My favorite picture disc, my favorite this, my favorite that, 84. How about goodness. 84 was just jam-packed me. you know yeah how about you oh my goodness eighty four was just jampacked for me i had I had Blamange.
00:17:57
Speaker
Yes. Loved them. Depeche Mode was still, you know, breaking me. um The Arrhythmics had the 1984 soundtrack. You know, I liked that single. Both singles. love that album. Okay, so hold on, sorry. Julia was a really cool picture disc. Did you ever see that one?
00:18:16
Speaker
yes I have seen that one with the with the pop-up in the movie theater for 1984 like that was a really cool package anyway I'm sorry no don't apologize it's amazing and it was a great soundtrack and it was it was too bad that it all the the politics with that in the movie but it was such a great soundtrack um heaven 17 on my like turntable non-stop there's a powerful 12 inch yes yeah yes super amazing um There was, who else was big that year?
00:18:51
Speaker
David Silvian had his his solo album out that year, some amazing stuff. Thompson Twins were all about the 12-inch extendeds that year. Like, it was just, it was nuts. There was just so much music.
00:19:05
Speaker
But I think that my my number one was Gary Newman's Berserker album. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. because it was such a departure from the last album.
00:19:20
Speaker
That seems like yesterday. Sorry, that freaks me out. Yeah, know, right? Yeah. Such a killer album. he He, once again, reinvented himself. You know, he came out with the the white face with the blue hair. was so cool. Yeah, it was so stunning. And he, he you know, the iAssassin album, loved that album, but it was very jazzy and very, you know, moody.
00:19:45
Speaker
But then all of a sudden, in just a year, he came out with Berserker and the the drum patterns that start the singles. Like even the Berserker song, that sound is stuck in my brain, that you know heavy beat. cool And it was dancey, and it was huge sound.
00:20:07
Speaker
Like this record needed to be played in a club. It was just so big and so incredibly well produced. So it was it was just a great album. and i ah couple of i got a couple of the 12-inch singles from that album and played them nonstop. Just out and pick the needle up, drop it again. Pick the needle up. I'm sure that my family was like, oh, my God, would you shut up? That's so funny.
00:20:35
Speaker
Yeah, so great album, lots of great singles from that one. Just amazing, amazing sound from from Gary Neumann that year.

Clubbing and Concert Experiences in 1984

00:20:45
Speaker
And the thing is, his stuff wasn't even being played in the clubs.
00:20:48
Speaker
i don't I don't remember ever hearing anything, you know, i Love a Affair. Well, for Canada, he was, you know, one-hit wonder, quote-unquote, right? So, you know, unless you had a proper DJ, they're only going to play, you know,
00:21:06
Speaker
what they want to hear yeah or what they think is cool or fresh or whatever i sometimes took some of my my um my singles down to uh to bumpers the teen club that we used to go to and uh every once in a while they would play one of the songs but it never really stuck so it would just be one of those things where i got to dance yeah yeah by myself but uh it was it's just just the way it was when when we do 1987 I'll talk about the time I danced alone to a nine minute 12 inch but anyway nice looking forward to that I mean to we no regrets but are yeah anyway 87 huh that's interesting um so it was such a big year for me I don't think I saw anybody live in 80s in 84 but I was trying to think who else was touring
00:22:04
Speaker
um And you're going to probably remember, but I think Frankie Goes to Hollywood was touring. And I think that's probably one of the only bands I saw. I saw them twice.
00:22:17
Speaker
Once at the concert hall and once at Massey Hall. The concert hall show I remember better than the Massey Hall show. Yeah, because I think, I can't even remember.
00:22:29
Speaker
I know I saw them. yeah and their their big song was power of love that year yeah i'm not a fan no not a fan i mean like not three number ones in a row you know like that rarely happens like two tribes was number one in the uk for like eight weeks or something or 11 weeks or something and it's just like how is that even possible like that's when it's like a movement you know yeah because they had relaxed power of love two tribes and war all in 84.
00:22:59
Speaker
Oh, yeah, war, yeah. Yeah, that was that was pretty huge. But I don't remember seeing anybody else. like That was such a jam-packed year. i probably could have seen bands, but I probably didn't. I mean, I saw a few bands at Love Affair, yeah um and they would have been like Canadian bands.
00:23:16
Speaker
I saw Thompson Twins. I saw Style Council. Saw Duran Duran. Saw Culture Club.
00:23:29
Speaker
That might be it. That was the year that Duran Duran was at the Pacific Coliseum. And I was like, it's just too big for me.
00:23:40
Speaker
that Yeah, they played the gardens and they opened with, is there something I should know? And it wasn't until like the last few seconds of that song where I knew what it was. Because the screaming was like yeah nothing. think Like, there they are. They're playing and you can feel the drum in the floor. But I'm like, oh my god I can't hear them. Like, it's just girls screaming. And I've never experienced anything like that since. Wow.
00:24:09
Speaker
Yeah, that was just one of those things. When they got that big, I was like, yeah, I'm not as interested. Because I just i didn't like that experience. Well, they were losing me with stuff like Wild Boys. and Yeah. yeah you Like Beauty Would Kill a year later okay single. But just, you know, the magic was definitely gone yeah by 84. Like Newborn on Monday is okay, too. But it's just, this you know...
00:24:36
Speaker
But like I was happy because I got bands like The Color Field um from Terry Hall. Pretty Politi were coming along. And and they seemed, well, they'd already been around. But like just single after single was just like, whoa, these guys are on fire. um Savage Progress were out. And I actually met her, I guess, a year later, which is kind of funny. Human League were back with the Lebanon, which was strange. like They got lot of...
00:25:06
Speaker
negative press over that single and the lyrics but it's kind of like i don't know it's a it's a great single um yeah i i liked the song yeah yeah it had really good sound um bronski beat were around um oh yeah of course bronski beat like like that's huge in itself um that's an important video when i'm thinking about like yeah yeah videos like that's that's a pretty gutsy one yeah that was that was a changer for sure
00:25:37
Speaker
Goodbye, Mr. McKenzie, who I loved. they They were coming out that year. um you know that song, See That Glow by This Island Earth? No, I i don't. worry It's one of those records I've never owned, and they're not on iTunes. And it's like, how come I just can't have that record? Weird. Yeah. like that weird licensing stuff where it's like, no, your country can't have it. I guess. Why?
00:26:03
Speaker
And then by Christmas... Because didn't enough singles? Like what? By Christmas, we had You Spin Me Round Like a Record. That was massive. um And Band-Aid, which was massive. You know, like it's... It was a really huge year, you know? Yeah. But more about sort of...
00:26:27
Speaker
Remember how you know I don't like 85? 85 is just too lush, too overproduced. Oh, 84, Bruce Springsteen. That's another one. You know what I mean? But anyway, I think we were getting there in 84.
00:26:40
Speaker
yeah You know what I mean? It was like it was coming. You know, it's like everything needs to be even bigger and lush for next year. i'm like, oh, no, thank you. um But still a decent year.
00:26:51
Speaker
but Yeah, like there was, I mean, there there's still a ton of, me I mean, David Bowie had Loving the Alien that year too. Yeah, i want to see that's a good song. Yeah, yeah. yeah that' that there was There was bizarre stuff like Dolly's Car.
00:27:04
Speaker
oh the judgment is the mirror i loved dolly's car yeah yeah and not just because it was mid-card but I, when I first heard it, I'm like, this is amazing. Yeah. That's what it seemed like every single artist signed to Virgin was just amazing.
00:27:18
Speaker
Yeah. you know just like What is his magical record label? You know, that nobody else can seem to top. Somebody was doing something there. Yeah. Malcolm McLaren had Madden Butterfly out that year too. And that was, yeah. Yeah. That's true. 84. Yeah. Another one is a strong, strong video too. Yep.
00:27:36
Speaker
Yep. Right. So yesterday as well. and D had junk culture out in 84. Yeah, like like that was another band that were just so big over here. You know, they were really lucky.
00:27:49
Speaker
yeah You know, really, really lucky. And they can just retire off just coming to Toronto five times a year. That's just so funny to me. You know, I'm like, when are they here? Oh, well, just wait a second. Oh, tickets just went on sale. There you go. Sold out.
00:28:05
Speaker
It's okay They're going to be back next week. So funny. Yeah. Now Toronto loves them. But like, what a happy guy. you know what I mean? That man made of rubber, you know, who can just dance like, you know, he's 14 years old and just happy, happy, happy. it does not stop. You know, like how fantastic is that? Yeah.

Trivia and Nostalgia from 1984

00:28:29
Speaker
Yeah, that's awesome. Yeah, pretty cool. All right, so now um i'm I've got some 1984 trivia here for you. Uh-oh. You love this part. Uh-oh.
00:28:40
Speaker
It's okay, I don't have any sound effects for you. Oh, what happened to the sound effects? I am changing everything for this one so it doesn't sound like the last show. Oh, okay. I haven't come up with anything yet.
00:28:51
Speaker
All right. They're coming for 2026, though don't you worry. All right. All right, so here's your ah here's your question. ah What Men Without Hats hit was par deep parodied by Weird Al Yankovic's 1984 song, The Brady Bunch.
00:29:09
Speaker
Oh, I didn't even know he had a song called that. I know, right? we We should know that kind stuff. it an album track? I guess it must have been, because I don't yeah I'm having a single.
00:29:19
Speaker
well i can Well, I can... Well, I'll say Safety Dance, but I don't know. well
