00:00:28
Speaker
Okay. i don't know what that is. i mean, i know what the newlywed game is. What's the cash that they had? I don't know. It was probably fake paper cash or something. Well, what a way to start a marriage.
00:00:39
Speaker
Right? Yeah.

Classic TV Show Quiz

00:00:40
Speaker
Okay, so we're goingnna we're going to play a little game. So I don't know if you remember, you can picture this actor, but he was in absolutely everything.
00:00:50
Speaker
and And this is also, just so you know, it's coming from retro fans, too much TV. That's part of their quiz. His name was Alan Melvin. Does that ring a bell? Not the name. Okay. Okay.
00:01:02
Speaker
So the the I know i I wouldn't have said I knew his his name either. But when you see pictures of him, but I'm not going to show you who that is. I was just going to say, hold it up. OK, here, here. Let's see if that works.
00:01:13
Speaker
OK. Don't look at the answers, though. Where am I looking, though? oh is it all the same guy? Oh, of course. Yeah. OK, yeah, yeah, yeah. There you go. So, you know him. So exactly two yes, he was. I'm going I'm to give you a name of a character he played.
00:01:27
Speaker
Just tell me what show he was in. It's just that it gets harder.
00:01:33
Speaker
Oh, man. ah Sam Franklin. That would be the Brady Bunch. Great job. all yeah yeah but I never knew his last name. I just knew him as Sam.
00:01:44
Speaker
Sam! I don't remember what the what the butcher shop was called. like Maybe it was in the name. think it was just called Sam's.

Micronauts Toys and Collecting

00:01:53
Speaker
Sam's Meat.
00:01:55
Speaker
Sam's Slab-A-Meat. Yes. ah Okay, so the voice of Drooper. That would be the Banana Splits. That is the Banana Splits.
00:02:08
Speaker
That's awesome. Still waiting for that on Blu-ray or even DVD. Oh, come on. Still waiting. What's the delay? The UK got it, probably because it's an hour-long show. okay. You know, so you've got, and it could be, you know, music rights. Who knows, right? Yeah, it usually is.
00:02:25
Speaker
There's been nothing here. i don't even know if we had VHS. I don't think so.
00:02:30
Speaker
Okay, one last one. This is the one I'll wrong. yeah yeah Totally, right? I've got my hand on the buzzer already. Yes, I know. Yes. Sam Pomerantz.
00:02:42
Speaker
Oh, dear. It could be anything. 70s? Uh...
00:02:48
Speaker
ah
00:02:51
Speaker
you know I can't even remember when it started. it was probably the 60s. I'm just going to say, oh, what did you say? 60s. Oh, shoot. I don't know. Gomer Pyle. Oh, so close.
00:03:02
Speaker
ah The Dick Van Dyke Show. Oh, he was in that? Well, you did say he in everything. Yeah, he was and he's in all those military shows. Yeah, i did He was Gomer Pile. And R.T. Bunker's Place.
00:03:15
Speaker
I didn't really care for the guy, but No, but he was just always there. He was, yeah, he was. it was i'm not saying he wasn't likable, I just didn't care for him. What a horrible thing to say, I'm so sorry. know, you're so mean. Rest in peace, whatever your name was again.
00:03:30
Speaker
He's probably 120 and still alive and listening.

Debate on New Superman Movie

00:03:34
Speaker
It's from eating all that healthy, healthy meat. Yes, all that healthy pork chops and applesauce. Yeah, exactly exactly. Awesome. All right, let's ah let's kick this off and get started.
00:03:51
Speaker
Hey, don't turn that channel. You've reached Yabba Sunker Zoinks, the Saturday morning podcast where your host, Josh Downing, that's me, will take you on a trip through a Gen X Saturday morning of cereal, toys, cartoons, and so much more.
00:04:04
Speaker
So grab your honeycombs and your favorite Micronaut and sit back and enjoy. So, did you get your Micronaut? Oh, shoot. ah didn't. Did you see, did we talk about those new Micronauts that are out?
00:04:18
Speaker
the one No, we did not. they're the They're like maybe the four-inch retro style. They made Biotron and they made ah maybe Barrancasa. They're just like, you know, little guys that don't do yeah yeah yeah five points of movement, you know, but they're pretty cool.
00:04:34
Speaker
I just, I would like to have the the the time travelers again. Yeah, I love those deluxe ones that Japan does, those 12-inch ones.
00:04:45
Speaker
Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh, my God. So cool. Anything that's translucent. Yeah, know totally. Totally. i I think I told you that my I still had my original clear Micronut. He was the very first one I ever bought yeah way back when I was a kid.
00:05:02
Speaker
and i had to rebuy one of his vehicles so he had something to sit in and unfortunately it had it's missing its front wheels oh but then him sitting there just waiting for something to happen all of his internal elastic bands dissolved and he just crumbled into pieces oh yeah so i'm gonna look up i'm sure somebody's got some kind of plan for how to uh how to repair a vintage Micronaut. Cause I'd like him. I don't want to glue him back together, but yeah it'd be nice just i don't have them hold together again.
00:05:37
Speaker
I had a clear, i had a yellow, i had an orange and I had a blue. he I don't know if that was everybody. Was there more? Like was there green? I, uh, I want to say there was a red, but I don't think there was green. Yeah. Okay. Yeah.
00:05:51
Speaker
Yeah. But I had all of them. So it was fascinating. funeral doubles too. Yeah. Well, yeah. mind-blowing Mind blowing. Mind blowing. He should but that's sound and sorry very good you're goingnna see you should have traveled in time to before the elastics went bust.
00:06:07
Speaker
Right? And just kept doing that. Just keep leap leaping forward. Yep, yep, yep. Let it be a lesson to all of us.

Casting Critiques in Superman Movie

00:06:14
Speaker
Yes. Time travel when necessary. Yes, before you fall apart.
00:06:19
Speaker
So me, it's got to go back about 10 years.
00:06:25
Speaker
so Ah, the life of a Gen Xer. so that's that's not why we're here today. Why are we here, Josh? i ever know I asked you a very important question today, and the answer I got was very surprising. Was it, oh, today? what did you ask me? I said, did you see Superman?
00:06:46
Speaker
You asked me that yesterday. Oh, yesterday. It's all one long day to me. Yeah, no, no, I'm not pointing out. It's just that we we did text earlier this morning, too. i I thought it was this morning. I could have sworn. Okay, Nils, go ahead. I walking my dog last night, and I felt bad because my answers were so abrupt. Terce?
00:07:03
Speaker
yeah Well, I can't say, hey, I'm just out with my dog, and I can't text him, blah, blah, but You You're right. but Yes, you're right. Anyway, i meant to I meant to clarify that later, and I for forgot. Well, it makes for good drama.
00:07:16
Speaker
I guess so. I don't know. But anyway, yes, my answer was a efficient yes. Efficient. Yes, it was very efficient. So what did you love the movie or what?
00:07:30
Speaker
Or what? Oh, no way. Here's the funny thing. Cause I thought, are you asking? Cause you haven't seen it yet. I've seen it. Or have you seen it? You know? And then I wasn't really sure.
00:07:42
Speaker
um You really want to start with me? Oh, yes, I do. um I was disappointed. um i was so looking forward to seeing a movie that was going to make me like jump on my chair and cheer and, you know, wave my American flag and, you know, and leave the theater just going. Finally, a movie that, you know, was just a lot of fun and entertaining. And I didn't like almost all of it.
00:08:13
Speaker
Um, I thought they did a good job with metamorpho. Okay. Um, and then it kind of went a little downhill after that. And then it got really bad.
00:08:25
Speaker
there i don't know. I feel bad for putting it down, but. I thought like the casting was brutal. thought his parents were hecks. Supergirl was a mess. you know I thought Crypto was going to make me cry, and instead it was kind of like, meh.
00:08:44
Speaker
I thought that anybody could play Luther. Anybody could play terrific. you know um Oh, Hot Girl, bad casting. you know i just and there was no color to the movie you know it was it has that washed out sort of you know if it's outdoor there's no color you know i i really wanted to like it i really did and yeah and i i didn't and you know i saw it with a good friend of mine they didn't like it so it was kind of like well okay we talked about it for quite a bit afterwards
00:09:20
Speaker
Because it's okay, so what, what, why wasn't it a good movie? it's like, well, it just wasn't. And I feel bad because I'm a DC guy. I'm not a Marvel guy. But I totally appreciate that the Marvel movies are almost always excellent.
00:09:32
Speaker
You know, and, you know, you said something, Josh, years and years ago. you know, where you said like Warner knows how to write good stories. So why do they sometimes make bad movies? And I've never forgotten that because I find when it comes to their hero animation, they can almost do no wrong. Then when it comes to hero live action, i find it kind of goes out the window and I don't really understand why, unless that's just me.
00:10:01
Speaker
I do love animation, but I don't need these to be animated movies. I'm quite happy to see, you know, live action movies, but I just, oh, no, I was so frustrated and disappointed and annoyed. And, you know, like, you know, there's those moments where you just roll your eyes, you know, you can accept a few of those now and then. And I did write like the whole city turning on him in one second and throwing garbage at him. I'm like, really people.
00:10:28
Speaker
But
00:10:31
Speaker
yeah I liked Metamorpho. I don't know if he had a kid in the comics, but um I even have, Josh. yeah I even have like a Metamorpho comic right here. No way.
00:10:44
Speaker
and Read it quick. I cannot find out. Does he have a kid? Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, he's not on the cover. Oh, then he doesn't. And I thought that the baby contributed anything. I guess we should have said spoiler alert before any of this conversation. right Oh yeah. Spoiler alert but alert. I figured we're after, we're after the launch. So yeah that's everything's already out there. so that's true.
00:11:04
Speaker
Just so you know, if you don't want to hear about Superman the movie, ah put this podcast Don't worry, it's i even going to get launched for another week, so we're all good. The sequel will be out.
00:11:17
Speaker
Totally. You know how Saturday mornings are. But like I thought the guy who played Superman was fine. i thought the the Superman robots were fine, although I don't like most of those voice actors. Well, shouldn't say they're not voice actors, they're actors.
00:11:31
Speaker
But just, you know, oh, that female villain, you know, with the buzzsaw hands. Oh, I just... Oh, anyway ah yeah, she she was weird.
00:11:43
Speaker
That was a weird one. She's like that alien marine type. Do we really need that? You know, yeah. yeah So i I don't know.
00:11:54
Speaker
like i Normally I would say I'll probably enjoy... if i see it again because i'm pretty hard on movies the first go around not deliberately and i'm like no i won't i know i won't see it again it's just kind of like okay you know i just uh so i'm looking forward to the fantastic four which i probably won't like like i like to the last fantastic four movie which nobody liked but anyway Yeah, no, I did not like that. But but we're going to save that because that's ah that's another episode. and Okay, all right. So I'm sorry for all the super doom and super gloom.

Nostalgic Superman Adaptations

00:12:27
Speaker
here. Yes, please. Opposite. I loved this movie. Wonderful. Because, and I don't hate the Zack Snyder movies, but they, to me, were so problematic.
00:12:42
Speaker
And they were so messy and ugly to look at. and were not fun. There was nothing fun about those movies. There was no there's no lighthearted. There was no comedy. There was no speaking of no color. They even went to the extent of making a black and white version of the movie, which I did like because I i like the the look.
00:13:05
Speaker
But I loved this movie. I thought it was fun. I thought it was fresh. I loved crypto. ah There was so many points in the movie where I had tears in my eyes because I'm like, oh my God, it got me.
00:13:20
Speaker
And i just I felt really good. Like it was just it was a good, fun superhero movie. I think that's what everybody feels, which I love. I love that it's so well rated.
00:13:34
Speaker
i love that people are going to the theater. I love everything about that. I just didn't care for it, but I love that people loved it. Yeah. Wow. I'm surprised. I'm totally surprised. I'd give it like a five out of 10, maybe. Maybe. Okay.
00:13:52
Speaker
All right. And that's because the popcorn was good? Okay, so I have not had popcorn in the theater since before COVID. Yeah. Oh, so good. Oh, my gosh. With that buttery type top topping. Oh, layered. Yeah.
00:14:09
Speaker
So good. So good. Anyway. I don't. I think that because I only go to the VIP theaters when I go to the movie theaters now. So you have steak tartare? Yeah. Yeah. Or or, you know, the vegan version of steak tartare, which is just nachos. Yeah. Yeah. Sort of like jalapeno poppers or something. But yeah, no, I have not. I'm not a fan of popcorn. I'm not.
00:14:34
Speaker
I'm Oh, I'm hooked. I'm hooked on watching all the U.S. videos of people collecting all the different popcorn buckets.
00:14:45
Speaker
Yeah. Because it just blows my mind that every film gets multiples and all their chains get different ones. Have you seen that Galactus head from Fantastic Four? Yes, I've seen pictures of that. It's $80 US to buy it in the theater. Yes.
00:15:02
Speaker
That doesn't include the popcorn. Yeah, exactly. and like like Anyway, I just watched a video yesterday, maybe, on the Smurfs. And I think it's hilarious that that movie has a rating of 2 out of 10 Rotten Tomatoes. I'm not anti-Smurf, but I just think that's funny.
00:15:19
Speaker
it's a hit. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's very funny. But like, just the the merch in the theaters is just like, wow. So I did see we had one of the Superman buckets here that I saw, but certainly we had the, yeah the newspaper box.
00:15:36
Speaker
Oh, do we have that? i think that was really cool. Yeah, because we were sitting there and I'm like, oh, hey, I wonder if anybody's getting the box. I'm looking around. looking at And then some guy just sat behind me was unwrapping it.
00:15:49
Speaker
And it was somebody who was just like, oh, I'm being really careful. so And I'm like, what is it? It's a big red box. And I had to think about it for a bit. And then I had to just look it up. I'm like, I need to know what this is.
00:15:59
Speaker
And it it's a newspaper box and it's yeah a picture of like a newspaper with Superman in it. Yeah, but you can turn it around and it's crypto. So you can have. Oh, no, I didn't even see that. Oh, yeah oh it's it's so cool. Yeah, I love that one. But yeah, the one that I saw is the one where Superman is like heating up the popcorn machine.
00:16:18
Speaker
Nice. Which was Cineplex. Cineplex. Why does that sound wrong? Cineplex. Yeah. Yeah, I was at Cineplex, but maybe you had an option.
00:16:29
Speaker
I don't know. I didn't see anybody else um with ah and with any of the buckets. but That's really cool that you saw the the newspaper box. I think that one's really neat. But they're so expensive.
00:16:40
Speaker
Like, holy, holy, holy. What I found really odd was how many moms came to see this movie. And by moms, I mean, people who are like, you know, around my age and older. Yeah. Yeah. You know, the golden agers. was gonna say, definitely Gen Xers.
00:16:57
Speaker
Yeah, definitely Gen Xers. But yeah, and there the the whole theater was just full of, you know, elderly people on and I say elderly in and I go, I know he's only 58. He's yeah me.
00:17:08
Speaker
But it's so funny because I'm like, why? Why are you here? because like Is it because you're here with your kid who's an adult and you're like fascinated? Or maybe you really did like Superman when you were a kid. Right. And you're probably guaranteed to like it because it's you know so well rated.
00:17:30
Speaker
yeah Did you know that Christopher Reeves kid is in it? Yeah. Yeah, like that's a cool. inhuate Yeah, that's cool. That was really cool. I just i really enjoyed it. That's good. no i think I think that's amazing. I wish that I had, but you know any who i feel bad sorry so you know what so then so let's let's cleanse your palate a little bit and we'll talk about some of the superman stuff we grew up with okay right i i love friendly oh dear let's go back a little further okay go back further let's go back to 1948 remember like yesterday
00:18:07
Speaker
remember it like yesterday they Sorry, 1938. Yeah, ahead. ah Yeah, the the, oh my gosh, what is the name? What is, I'm totally blanking on those. Oh, oh, Max Fleischer.
00:18:22
Speaker
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. That was the second series of TV shorts. That was the first animated. Yeah, and like that was rotoscope and gorgeous and nice, a lot of fun and just beautiful, beautiful art deco series. And it inspired the Batman the animated series.
00:18:42
Speaker
I love that series, and I love the first season of the Superman TV show, the live action, because it's got a killer cast.
00:18:53
Speaker
And then they switch Lois's on you in season two, and I'm like, no, I can't. I can't watch that show. I only like the season one and the movie, the Superman don't know if called versus the Mole Man or Superman. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Then, you know, because that original Lois is still in that as well, too. I love someone with George Reeves, right?
00:19:14
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. from Yeah. From the 50s. Did you ever see the movie based on his life? ah No, I never did. What's it called? Oh, I've forgotten it. and that I'm so bad with names. It stars What's-His-Face, who's been playing Batman recently. The one that everybody loves to make fun of, J-Lo.
00:19:35
Speaker
yeah I don't have a problem with the guy, but yeah obviously have a problem with his name. ah Ben something. What did you say? Mr. J-Lo. I'm still stuck on that. that's yeah yeah guy and Let's just call him Mr. J-Lo.
00:19:48
Speaker
um Yeah, Mr. J-Lo. Everybody knows what we're talking about. Yeah, yeah exactly. Affleck, Ben Affleck. that's it that's it that's it that's it yeah yeah yeah so anyways right he he plays george in in that movie and it's really good it's really good i think it's called like hollywood land or something i can't remember and i just forgot about it so so just have to look that up check it out yeah but i even like the superman animated filmation series because yes you know like heroes are easy and in animation because they always look good
00:20:19
Speaker
you know And if the stories are good and your actors are good, then you're gold. you know So there's been all kinds of versions of Superman. um And the Super Friends, I'm like, that one's always a struggle. right But the Superman animated series that we got in the ninety s you know that things started to improve again.
00:20:41
Speaker
Superman and the Justice League animated series is great. I love that version of Superman. um And I certainly enjoyed the Christopher Reeve 78 movie when it came out. It seems like yesterday.
00:20:58
Speaker
i know. Isn't that weird? doesn't seem like years and years ago. My dad had that novella, by the way. It's a good read. Yeah.
00:21:09
Speaker
And of course, Christopher's story is amazing. horrible um and the tremendous loss. Yes, absolutely. But like he he really is, I think, an incredible live-action Superman. He's certainly the one that we all you know hold a candle to. Yeah, and and he he played it so... um so so like What's the word I'm thinking like Innocently. so yeah I was just thinking like gently. he just yeah he He didn't overdo anything. He just...
00:21:40
Speaker
you know what? I'm just here. I'm just a guy. he's just like a falling love with a chain smoking newspaper reporter. Oh, should we talk about her? Maybe.
00:21:52
Speaker
Well, you know, the old saying, you can't see anything nice, don't, don't talk about her. Were you with me when she was at fan expo and spoke? ah That seems really familiar. Because really. yes, was yes yes, yes. I remember seeing her. then Yeah, she was in fine form.
00:22:10
Speaker
yeah know, there was no issues, nothing strange. You know what I mean? i really shouldn't be saying that. I don't mean it like that. I'm talking as if we're not recording this, sorry. um But anyway, I mean, no disrespect.
00:22:23
Speaker
No, no, not at all. But it was that was a nice way to see her in person and have her speak for herself. and Yes.

Superhero TV Show Discussions

00:22:30
Speaker
you know She certainly seemed... solid, you know, so that was. Yeah, yeah, totally.
00:22:36
Speaker
Yeah, that was good. That was good. nope But like, what are some of the versions of Superman you like? um So i I remember watching the George Reeve serials.
00:22:47
Speaker
Yep. And I loved those. Because he's great. It was so much fun. They were they were so basic, but they were just and, you know, they they were done on a 14 cent budget, which was a million dollars back then.
00:23:01
Speaker
And they were just they were great. They were just really good adventures of Superman in the 50s. And, you know, i watch them on reruns all the time. They were so good. I think because George makes a good Clark Kent as well. I think that's important.
00:23:14
Speaker
Yeah. If you can play both, then I think you've got yourself an actor, you know, for that part. Well, and also, too, it was very much of the time. And just, you know, even the women, everybody looked like they were sculpted.
00:23:28
Speaker
And they had these amazing outfits. And everybody was just so, like, you know, perfectly coiffed and amazing all the time. And had so many great manners. But it was an adventure hero story.
00:23:40
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. you know, and he was always saving somebody on a ledge of a window. i was going to say, was going to say, as he's jumping out the window. That's so funny. Or driving down that same city street on the Warner lot.
00:23:53
Speaker
Yes. Passing the same. Yeah. du It's funny when I was doing some research. um After World War Two, American superhero stuff got into Japanese culture.
00:24:06
Speaker
yeah So Astro Boy first published in 52 was inspired by Mighty Mouse. Oh, yeah. Mighty Mouse. Love Mighty Mouse. yeah And Mighty Mouse was a parody of Superman.
00:24:18
Speaker
Yeah, especially when he had that blue costume. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's interesting how those kind of things are all connected there. i also I mean, I'm I'm partial to the whole super fan things because that's where I really got to sit and watch Superman and super friends and, you know, Wonder Woman and and all those great superheroes and learn about the environment.
00:24:42
Speaker
Yes. Teamwork and not ever, ever resorting to violence. Not ever. ah You know, and using fish for good instead of evil. Or for standing on. guys totally.
00:24:58
Speaker
Because they wanted to help. Yes. right The dolphins wanted to help Aquaman. There was some line, I don't know in which version of Aquaman, where he just kindly corrects somebody and says, no I manipulate them. I don't talk to them. I'm like, oh, that's kind of interesting. You know, but then manipulate is probably a bad word.
00:25:17
Speaker
it is now right yeah yeah i force them to do my exactly yeah but only in the best you know the best way yes uh i loved the the first superman movie of course i mean i saw that in the theater when i was a kid and yeah was blown away i'm like wow and of course i had to read all the ever how it was made books so are you gonna say what Do you remember the that Corgi made the red ah Daily Planet copter?
00:25:48
Speaker
you remember that? I thought it was so cool that they made that. like, wow, you made that? Like, that's really cool. yeah because there were, I mean, other than like what comic books, what else did we have for toys back then?
00:26:02
Speaker
Mego. yeah had Mego. Oh, that's right. Yeah, the 8-inch and the 12-inch. But both of those are pretty expensive, right? Yeah. When you're a kid. i was not ah I was not a big fan of the the sequels to Superman, and I did just watch them recently. So we just watched Superman, um Quest for Peace.
00:26:25
Speaker
That's the fourth one? the Yeah, the fourth one, Superman 2, 3. Just because I'm a completist, and i you know when I start one, I like to see them all. yeah Because if I don't, then I feel like I've left one out, and then it feels bad.
00:26:39
Speaker
like two two is okay um three yeah not bad is three richard pryor uh yes i believe so like i saw it once with my dad in the theater i've never seen it since and superman 4 i forgot existed a few years ago then when i saw the trailer i'm like oh yeah i think i did see this at some point um But I have no memory of three and four. Yeah.
00:27:07
Speaker
Yeah. they They weren't memorable. Yeah. And I did see Supergirl, which I don't hate. It's a little long, but I don't hate it. I'm going to probably do a rewatch on that one.
00:27:18
Speaker
Yeah. And we're and mostly because I'm excited about the new Supergirl movie. Oh, God help us. Okay. oh See, I'm excited. i think that's so fun.
00:27:29
Speaker
I think she like, I liked the Supergirl TV series yeah um that wrapped a couple of years ago. And to me, you know, she's very much a hero, you know, almost a nerd.
00:27:42
Speaker
you know, and this party girl that we're getting next year, I'm like, it's a bit. I think that's going to be fun. I think it's more like a Harley Quinn kind of approach.
00:27:56
Speaker
So, I mean, if it's good, that's great. That's awesome. You know what I mean? But it's just a little hard for me to watch characters. You know, it's like, you remember the Green Lantern movie? Like I didn't like it because I didn't like what they did with Green Lantern.
00:28:09
Speaker
you know, so I kind of feel like this is the same thing again, you know, anyway, I'm sorry. Yeah. so i see it and I didn't hate the Green Lantern movie. Oh, I did. i know.
00:28:20
Speaker
I'm the only one that didn't hate it. Well, but at the time, everybody said they loved it. And I was like, really? You know, and now all of a sudden it's like, Oh, that horrible Green Lantern movie. I'm like, what?
00:28:32
Speaker
You don't know. where were you people back then? It's not great. And I, I think that what really sort of turned me off was I didn't like the look of the, of the, the special effects. Yeah. Like in the costumes, it just looked a little weird to me. So I didn't like that very much.
00:28:48
Speaker
I think it should have been played by somebody else and I might've okay with it, but yeah, but you know, okay. So you liked Superman returns from 2006. That's the one with Brandon Routh.
00:29:01
Speaker
Oh, I liked that actor. i don't I don't remember anything about those movies, so I can't say I liked it or not. I don't remember disliking any of them. And every time I think, oh, I should buy them and watch them on 4K, I'm like, no, it's never going to happen. I don't have the time.
00:29:15
Speaker
um But I do like him and yeah I don't really remember. but
00:29:23
Speaker
So we just watched that one recently too. okay So he also showed up in Arrowverse. Oh yeah. Yeah. yeah And he was, he was a regular, well, he was kind of across all of them playing the Adam.
00:29:37
Speaker
So yeah I was happy, very happy to see him in, in everything for there a while. Then he had to leave. I tried to watch the Arrowverse Supergirl, but I just... And I love the actor, but i just could not do it.
00:29:51
Speaker
It gets better. i remember it was it was a little bit of a struggle at first, and then all of a sudden, it's good. The Martian Manhunter, I really like that character. he gets better.
00:30:04
Speaker
her friend at the agency, she gets better. you know it just It just improves as it goes. and And as much as it was sort of the weaker one, i found that I enjoyed it more compared to like The Flash, you know which i think The Flash maybe we just stayed on TV too long.
00:30:21
Speaker
I don't know. But I would have loved to have been living in Vancouver like 10 years ago when everywhere you turn, some superhero was being filmed. I'm like, wow, what is this city again?
00:30:31
Speaker
Oh, right. It's this city and this city and this city and this city. But but yeah, I ever.

Recent Superhero Films Insights

00:30:37
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I loved all those those Arrowverse shows. So I was very happy at the time when they were all going strong.
00:30:45
Speaker
ah Yeah. And I tried, i just, I just could not, i could not, just, I don't know what it was. And Arrow Vancouver kind of feeling too. well Yeah. Cause you always feel like you're there. Right. But like arrow that I didn't want to like, I forced myself to watch that even after seeing the pilot and I'm like, uh, I gotta do this again.
00:31:03
Speaker
Watch the pilot again. Hated this, hated this, hated this. Then all of a sudden it's like, wow, this is really good. And it just got better and better and better and better. So, you know,
00:31:15
Speaker
That's the thing. You got to stick with it. You got to want to, but the reward is there if you stick it out. But I certainly appreciate bailing on something that you're just not feeling, you know? Yeah, totally.
00:31:26
Speaker
So what are your thoughts on a man of steel from 2013 with Henry Cavill? Well, I would have seen it, but I don't remember Who was the villain? Do you know?
00:31:39
Speaker
ah Man of Steel. That would have been um um the the Kryptonians. Oh, again? Yeah. Three of them? Yeah. It was really just it was really just him.
00:31:54
Speaker
Gosh. I have no memory of it. I didn't even see the Krypton TV show. Did you watch any of that? No, I did not see that. Yeah. I, at that point I was like, I'm watching too many shows. I don't think I can touch that one. And my friend Scott said, it's not very good.
00:32:11
Speaker
So that yeah. Okay. Well, that's an excuse not to even try, but yeah you know, I'm sure it's probably decent ish, but i think it only got two seasons. Anyway, that's not your question. No, I'm sure I saw that movie. I would have seen that movie. i don't remember a thing about it.
00:32:26
Speaker
but Okay, but what about Batman versus Superman Dawn of Justice? Okay, so I'm like, that was a movie? Yeah, it was movie. Literally, like you know I'm going and I'm seeing these movies and they are not they're not making any impression on me. And yet I go to the Marvel ones that, again, I'm not a fan.
00:32:43
Speaker
And I remember every single one. Justice League. you know and justice league I bought that black and white 4K version. i enjoyed it.
00:32:54
Speaker
And I'm like, I know I saw this in the theater, but I don't remember it. no So it's just, you know, for some reason they don't they don't hit with me, even though I'm a fan.
00:33:05
Speaker
i don't remember the Wonder Woman movie. I never saw the second one, which I mean to. haven't seen seriousr yeah I haven't seen Joker. i haven't seen Birds of Prey. i you oh no, I didn't see.
00:33:16
Speaker
Oh, no, I did. I saw Joker. I did see Joker. Is it good? not No, I did not enjoy it. oh Yeah, see, so now it's like, as you get older, your time is so much more precious.
00:33:29
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. It's like, do I have the time to sit down and watch this stuff that's really... not at the top of my list. In my heart I know it's not at the top of my list. There's that famous um fellow Jerry Beck, major animation, um and don't want to call him a critic, that's not really the right word, but anyway.
00:33:53
Speaker
And I saw him speak at San Diego. And after he was done talking, I just said, but there's no time to watch any of this stuff. And he just kind of sighed and said, yeah, I know.
00:34:05
Speaker
It's like there isn't. you know, each time something thing comes out, there's ah they just announced the Huckleberry Hound Blu-ray set. that includes everything and these incredible extras and i'm like not in this lifetime i know i will not see it don't see any of it and something else has to be seen instead you know anyway that's not a negative or i mean a down no no not at it's just amazing how it's like nope it has to be priority or i'm just never going to see it now Did you watch the Superboy show?

Superman vs. Batman Characteristics

00:34:39
Speaker
That was the animated one. Oh, the 60s one? No, I'm thinking of the 80s one. Oh, the live action one? Yeah. No, I never saw Superboy. never saw Lois and Clark.
00:34:53
Speaker
Yeah, I watched Lois and Clark for a while. But I am watching the current one, the I don't know what it's called. It's called like Superman and Lois, I think. Yeah.
00:35:04
Speaker
And I'm also watching, ah what's it called? My Adventures with Superman. i think it's called, i might be getting that wrong. That's the animated one that's out right now. Okay. It's kind of done in an anime style. And at first I thought, uh, And then all of sudden it's like, no, actually it's very good.
00:35:18
Speaker
it's It's actually very enjoyable. um But I haven't finished the Superman and the Lois yet. But started it started off good. It started off good. like It's funny when you saw them thinking about how many versions there are. No, I no you know. So if you were to think like, oh, here comes another one. I'm like, well, if people like me don't remember the last one. then it's Exactly. And it's like, no, wait a me Is that just a rerun of it? Because did i see this already last month?
00:35:43
Speaker
Don't ask Tyler. He doesn't know. Exactly. Did you like Shazam?
00:35:50
Speaker
or did you see it? Maybe I've got to go back and ask, did you watch Shazam? You're talking about the new one, right? Yeah, the 2019 movie. Yeah, I saw Shazam and ah got the 4K and I watched it again and I'm like, yeah, this is fine. and then I watched Black Adam.
00:36:07
Speaker
And I didn't mind Black Adam. And then I sold them both out of my collection. So it's like, OK, I guess that means I didn't like them enough. no But Black Adam him was OK, I think because I liked the Adam character in that one.
00:36:22
Speaker
um But you know what's funny? i don't know if I just said this to you or not. Anything that kind of is around the COVID time. Yeah. ah Kind of isn't a great memory, you know, something like black Adam, which came out during COVID reminds me of that lockdown. And I'm kind of like, uh, it's a bit, I know that sounds strange, but that's what I associate it with.
00:36:49
Speaker
You know, like even the Scoob, the Scooby-Doo movie that came out during COVID, you know, i don't mind that movie, but at the same time, it's kind of like, uh, not a great place.
00:37:00
Speaker
you know, when that came out. But anyway. Yeah. And maybe there was just some like, you know, long COVID brain fog going on.
00:37:10
Speaker
Well, anyway, I'm just happy to be going to the theater again because I saw Jurassic. I saw Superman. I will see Fantastic Four. will see Jaws. You know, whatever else is coming our way. Tron.
00:37:23
Speaker
know the trailer's out for Tron, but haven't seen it. See, and I'm a Tron fan. I loved Tron when I was a kid. It was mind-blowing. Didn't enjoy the the ah comeback movie. Yeah, yeah the reboot.
00:37:37
Speaker
okay I don't know how much I'm looking forward to the next one. It just feels like the movies aren't made for us anymore. You know, they're made for a different generation. They've got different, you know, stories and priorities. Yeah.
00:37:49
Speaker
Well, I give it just a retelling again. Then it's like, okay, that might not be that interesting. you know um i didn't mind the look of the neutron movies neutron but um again i i didn't really retain them either i a lot of people kind of are hard on the first tron movie like from way back and i remember seeing in the theater with my dad and thinking like wow like this is new you know this is stuff i've never seen before you know i wasn't a fan but i certainly appreciated the movie
00:38:25
Speaker
Yeah, I totally did way back then, way back in the olden days. Yes, yes. When you could still smoke. Sorry, go ahead. When you could still smoke. In the movie theater. Yeah, that's right.
00:38:38
Speaker
And then go to McDonald's and have a smoke. Exactly. um Did you ever have any Superman toys?
00:38:47
Speaker
i I for sure had the, oh, I had something really cool. I had Mego comic action hero, Superman. My mom was collecting them for me, but then my grandmother gave me, they called it the Fortress of Solitude, but it was really the Hall of Justice.
00:39:05
Speaker
Okay. Like it was, it was kind of a mix, I guess, of the two, nothing like ice or Arctic about it, but the, the console table and the chairs were right out of the hall of justice, which I thought was really cool.
00:39:17
Speaker
Um, and then it, it had like a door that exploded open and nice yeah. And it was his, chapters the best, you know, um, So, yeah, I did have that. I didn't have the Mego Superman. i didn't have any of the movie toys.
00:39:34
Speaker
And i didn't I didn't have comics. I didn't have coloring books. I didn't have puzzles. So I think maybe the only Superman thing I i had... Oh, I did have i did have the Avon Superman brush, the hairbrush. Of course. mean, why would you do that?
00:39:52
Speaker
Well, you need that, right? just like yeah Absolutely. So you can get that little curl in your band. Yeah. i We didn't even have the soundtrack in my house to the Superman movie. My dad had like every soundtrack.
00:40:03
Speaker
I'm just quickly thinking that we would have had that track, but we didn't have that. No, that's weird. Did you have any Superman stuff? ah You know what? I was trying to think if I did, and I i don't think I did. i don't know why. Maybe because there just there was so little ah stuff out there, but I didn't have any Superman stuff.
00:40:20
Speaker
Do you know that the first toy was a wooden doll made in 1939? That makes sense. I was going to say like there would have been a lot of stuff a generation ahead of us.
00:40:33
Speaker
There was unlimited stuff, right but then I guess it kind of hit our pocket, and there's not a lot. Yeah. And you would have thought that there would have been stuff coming out of the Superman movie.
00:40:44
Speaker
and There was stuff, but I think there was but it was. I wasn't at toy age. Yeah, yeah. I was still playing with my Micronauts.

Trivia and Listener Interaction Encouragement

00:40:53
Speaker
like Because I loved Super Friends, yeah I had like Super Friends Comics, where he was featured, of course. but And he was in Justice League Comics, too, which I had some. But you know a guy was a Batman fan.
00:41:08
Speaker
you know I wasn't really a Superman fan. I didn't really appreciate Superman until I was older. or You know, because Batman was exciting and cool and vulnerable. You know, Superman was the Boy Scout.
00:41:20
Speaker
Right. And then when you get a little older and you sort of appreciate the how much Batman and Superman don't get along and kind of don't respect each other. It's like, oh, that's really interesting.
00:41:32
Speaker
You know what I mean? And it makes that's why I think when I go to a Superman movie, it should be a lot of color, a lot of love, a lot of um I just think it should be like big and bold and heroic and, you know, and whereas his Batman would be like in the shadows, you know? So I think I just wanted something different from the Superman movie, but.
00:41:54
Speaker
Hmm. So folks, um, it looks like Tyler gives the new Superman movie a thumbs, like a thumbs across, not a thumbs down.
00:42:05
Speaker
Oh, when I think about some of that casting, it's going down. It's going down. Yeah. Yeah. And Josh gives the super the new Superman movie two thumbs up.
00:42:17
Speaker
Perfect. I loved it. I thought it was a fan fantastic movie. And I think that it was a movie that we haven't seen in while. that Like that kind of movie. its Yeah. it's ah it was I thought it was a lot of joy and a lot of fun. and And oh my God, crypto stole the show.
00:42:33
Speaker
Yeah. And now we've started a whole new thing. Good to have a difference of opinion, right? Right. i just Absolutely. I'm just gooching over to Rotten Tomatoes to see what the current rating is. Is it 95? critics are 83% and crowd is 92%. Yeah. Ooh, and the Smurfs gone 1%. They are now at 21%. 21%.
00:42:50
Speaker
the critics are eighty three percent and the crowd is ninety two percent yeah oh and the smurs have gone up one percent they are now at twenty one percent twenty one percent All right, so don't go see the Smurfs because nobody else is. But definitely go and re-watch Superman.
00:43:10
Speaker
Before I let you go, Tyler, i have to I have to ask you some trivia questions here. Okay. No, I really do.

00:43:16
Speaker

00:43:21
Speaker
No, you didn't. Not yet. Okay. But these have been hand-picked, so you shouldn't have any problem getting the answer. Okay. Pressure is on. And the question is, who topped the charts with West End Girls in 1986? That would be the Pet Shop Boys.
00:43:41
Speaker
Absolutely. and I knew you could get that. Yeah. um Here's an interesting ah toy question. Did you know that Canada got a cassette single for that? And it's very rare anyway. No way.
00:43:56
Speaker
Yes way. Is it extended or is it just the regular radio version? I think it was the 12 inch cassette, but I don't remember. um I just remember thinking, oh, that's really interesting because we had them at work and I didn't realize it wasn't like worldwide release, you know, so funny. So you didn't buy it?
00:44:12
Speaker
No, cause I'm not really a fan. Yeah. Yeah. Here we go. Oh no. and okay here we go what doll originally got cooking with blueberry muffin huckleberry pie and apple dumpling i don't know how much cooking they did together but i would say that strawberry shortcake that's for sure well they were cooking something yeah yeah you were definitely cooking something all right we got one last question for you okay what And there's a word, and I don't even want to try to pronounce it because it's just it's too long.
00:44:45
Speaker
But what old guy voiced the warlock Vincent Van Goole on the 13 ghosts of Scooby-Doo? That would be the late Vincent Price. The awesome Vincent Price. What was the word?
00:45:01
Speaker
it's It's septuagenarian. Okay. It meant he was like 70 or something. That's so old.
00:45:12
Speaker
I know he was ancient, but that was back in the seventies. Eighties. Yes. In the eighties when he was seventies in his eighties. Well, that was awesome. All right. So there we go. There we have it.
00:45:24
Speaker
