Introduction and Episode Teasers
00:00:01
Speaker
Okay. So welcome back. This is Josh. Uh, this Yabazonker Zoinks and, um, yeah, we get some fun stuff to talk about today. I'm joined today with Tyler.
00:00:11
Speaker
Hey, Josh. And I'm so excited because we're going to do something really bizarre and different today.
Frisbee Origins: Pie Plates or Not?
00:00:17
Speaker
But the first thing I want to start with was, fact or fiction, frisbee were originally pie plates.
00:00:26
Speaker
Anything can be a frisbee. You know, the first one I had was foam. Did you have one of those? No. Mine was blue foam with a yellow swirl and it was a frisbee. No way. Frisbee brand Frisbee? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. sure wasn't a Nerf brand Frisbee?
00:00:41
Speaker
Did we have Nerf yet? i Probably. i don't know. I have Nerf soccer ball. Anyway, I'm getting us off track so that I can avoid the answer. Well, I'll say yes, just because it seems like one of those kind of facts.
00:00:55
Speaker
Okay, so here's the thing. What what I'm doing today, this is going to
Retro Fan Magazine and Frisbee History
00:00:59
Speaker
be fun. um Today we're gonna we're going to do some stuff from this great magazine that Tyler always gets called Retro Fan. It is a good magazine. It's so awesome. I love this magazine. Retro Fan has this page called Retro Toys.
00:01:13
Speaker
right up our alley. We love toys. And they talk about how these frisbee pie shells, like pie tins were being thrown back and forth on lunch break by the staff.
00:01:24
Speaker
And it's so funny, though, when I went to go look that up, it was hard to connect that to the guy who actually invented the frisbee who was an inventor, but he might have also been one of the guys that was working there and throwing this pie pie tin back and forth on a beach so anyways this guy named uh walter frederick morrison invented the frisbee said apparently the original pie tin was the the the way they got the name see all good things come from going to the beach ah exactly is that you know
00:01:57
Speaker
Except remember, we just talked about not going in the water. So go to the beach. Oh, yeah. No, no. You're not going in the water. And just don't go in the water. Oh, my pie tin plate went into the water. I better go get it.
00:02:11
Speaker
And it's not floating. it's There's a big, large shadow under it. Whatever. Here I go. Hey,
00:02:23
Speaker
don't turn that channel.
Yabba Sunker Zoinks: Gen X Nostalgia
00:02:24
Speaker
You've reached Yabba Sunker Zoinks, the Saturday morning podcast where your host, Josh Downing, and that's me, will take you on a trip through a Gen X Saturday morning of cereal, toys, cartoons, and so much more.
00:02:36
Speaker
So grab your honeycombs and your favorite Micronaut and sit back and enjoy. Okay. So I just wanted to finish up with the Frisbee story.
00:02:46
Speaker
And I think I might have mentioned this before, but i my my Frisbee claim to fame was that I had the glow in the dark Moonlighter Frisbee. And I had to have it because it was glow in the dark. Yeah. There was just nothing better than glow in the dark stuff.
00:03:01
Speaker
You weren't allowed out at night, but it still glowed. Well, at seven o'clock on Saturday in the winter in BC, I could still play with my Frisbee all by myself and my friend Gary. Awesome.
00:03:12
Speaker
ah So it was all good. As long as I didn't climb over the fence. Very good. Awesome.
Lost in Space and Swiss Family Inspirations
00:03:17
Speaker
Okay. So in in the light of the Retro Fan magazine, we're going to talk about Lost in Space.
00:03:27
Speaker
Did you get that? Lost in Space? I heard it, but I wasn't paying attention. Sorry. It's totally cool. It's totally awesome. So we're going to talk about Lost in Space. I don't think you were a fan of Lost in Space, were you?
00:03:39
Speaker
It's not that I wasn't. I just never watched it. So you're always familiar with it. Like to see it, the first thing I saw was the movie.
00:03:51
Speaker
oh Oh, yeah. So that's cool. Because i I wasn't, I think it was one of those shows that was hard for me to watch when I was a kid. Like it was on at a time that I couldn't necessarily see it.
00:04:02
Speaker
So I didn't always get to see it. But I watched it enough that I knew what it was and knew what was going on somewhat. But it was it was one of my favorite shows as a kid.
00:04:13
Speaker
um It originally ran in 65 to 68. So it had a three season run. And I think the first two seasons were black and white. That's pretty healthy for a show that was probably expensive.
00:04:25
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Right. And they were running a risk, like running a kid's show with, you know, spaceships and aliens and all kinds of crazy storylines. And it was produced by none other than Erwin Allen. Of course. Yeah. Right.
00:04:41
Speaker
And area and you know why. See what the chariot design. Yes. Erwin Allen. Totally. So and he was famous for a few things.
Erwin Allen's Sci-Fi Productions
00:04:53
Speaker
What are some of things you remember Erwin Allen from? oh gosh time tunnel um voyage to the bottom of the sea yeah like it goes on forever wasn't he outer limits uh i don't remember that let me see if i've got that wrong i'm trying to think of all the model kits you know what i mean yeah voyage to the bottom the sea for sure hell and high water the enemy below the lost world like the original lost world like the claymation is there a year on there
00:05:24
Speaker
No, that one for some reason missing the year. let me see if there's something. Because that old. Yeah, it's it was before time started. Yeah, exactly. What a visionary. Exactly.
00:05:35
Speaker
And originally in Space was supposed to be his version of the Swiss family Robinson. That's why their name was Robinson. Just got that. Yes. And the evil Dr. Smith. But the robot wasn't made of coconuts in Lost in Space. Yeah.
00:05:49
Speaker
Well, originally it was, and apparently there was a, there was a ah lot of that sort of comic robot thing in shows like silent running love star Wars. love Yeah. But there's nothing funny about silent running. No, but it's such a brilliant movie. Oh, I love it. It makes me cry. i was just, I, yeah, that was a cry movie.
00:06:12
Speaker
Is that his movie? No, it's not. was just that was a a movie of the time that also featured, you know, comic robots. because Yeah, of course. do and louisu Yeah.
00:06:23
Speaker
Star Trek Next Generation also had, you know, comic androids. Time Tunnel was his show. I'm trying to see what else. Land of the Giants. Oh, of course.
00:06:35
Speaker
Yeah, and it was the most expensive of its show. $250,000 an episode back in 68. Okay, so believe it or not, i sold my Land of the Giants DVD box set just today.
00:06:49
Speaker
whatjiji Yeah, that was a hard thing to let go. Yeah. Yeah. But you've watched it many times, right? That was a beautiful set, and it wasn't easy to part with.
00:07:01
Speaker
e But anyway, if you know, you know. Yeah, totally. ah He was also a producer on City Beneath the Sea and the Man from the 25th Century.
00:07:13
Speaker
Yeah, some of these i definitely am not familiar with. Only the 60s ones. Yeah, and then he went on to make The Poseidon Adventure. Which was The Poseidon Adventure? decide Oh, wow. Okay. Yeah.
00:07:26
Speaker
No Man's World in Almost Midnight, but... Oh, wait, did he actually make those? He signed a deal to make those. Yeah, yeah, he did. But he didn't make um the other films. He did produce The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno.
00:07:41
Speaker
Well, they go hand in hand, don't they? Right. they are Everybody jump off the building and land on the boat. Into this boat. And then the boat will flip over. The first time I saw Towering Inferno, I was like scarred.
00:07:55
Speaker
You know, on TV and I'm pretty young and I'm like, these poor people. My parents went to see it in the theater yeah and they were telling us about it. And to it was the craziest movie they had ever seen. Yeah. Well, it probably was, right? Yeah.
00:08:13
Speaker
Yeah. yeah And I never saw it since. Poseidon I've a couple of times, but I never saw Towering Inferno again. No, I, I did watch it. I haven't, I would say it's still a ah number of years ago, but I did go back and watch it.
00:08:28
Speaker
Did you watch the new Poseidon adventure? No, no, no. See, I don't want to go back and see that. I think that I would be disappointed. Yeah. Apparently, um, Alan also made a $14 million dollars TV, Alice in Wonderland. Hmm.
00:08:45
Speaker
And I'm wondering if that's the one that I remember. It was in 85. Yeah. yeah Yeah, it was one of the last things he did. But anyways, let's go back to Lost in Space. Okay.
00:08:55
Speaker
I love to that show. you know the 4K of the movie is coming out this summer. Seriously, of the the movie from the Yes, yes. yeah Because I do love that movie. Yeah, so yeah.
00:09:06
Speaker
i I loved that movie too.
Appreciating the Lost in Space Movie
00:09:09
Speaker
And we're probably the only two people they like that loved that movie. Yeah, yeah. Right. Because it was it was panned pretty heavily. I don't know why. Like to me, showed us some of the fun things that came from the original series, like even like the opening sequence where it's like, OK, here's the original ship. I'm like, oh, my God, that's amazing.
00:09:27
Speaker
And then it splits open and there's the new ship. I'm like, oh, my God, I was so excited. I thought that was such a great way to introduce that. And even though it kind of modernized the story a little bit and and still took us in a different adventure,
00:09:44
Speaker
We still had that that that evil guy, and we still had you know the evil robot, and we still had the kid. And it was just, I liked that family. I liked what they were doing, and I thought it was a really good adventure.
00:09:56
Speaker
When the robot comes up the ramp to kill the family in the film, I still think it's one of the most exciting shots ever. And it's scary and it's intense.
00:10:08
Speaker
And it's like, Jesus, you know, like, like it's a great, you know, two second shot. I love that shot. yeah And I have no issue with the second half of the movie, if you want to call it that, you know, the first half is more exciting, but I really have no issue with that movie and I enjoy it Yeah.
00:10:28
Speaker
Yeah, I did too. And I thought that the cast was was having some fun with it. And I thought that there was some really good, you know, some good excitement on the screen. But it also reminds you of when it seems like there was still something to go to at the movies every week. Yeah.
00:10:43
Speaker
You know, every week there was something, you know, and that was one of those movies where I was like, okay, we're going. And the next week it's something else. Next week it's something else, you know. Yeah, that's true. Yeah. We were constantly being dragged back. So we liked the movie.
00:10:55
Speaker
did you You never watched the Netflix series, though, did you? No, and we just talked about that, right? Yeah. Because I'm on a limited Netflix subscription that I have to cancel in a week. And I thought, what else should I cram in here? And I found that one by accident. i'm like, I forgot about it.
00:11:12
Speaker
And i I had seen some of the props at San Diego 2018. um But I'm going with your advice to skip it. And yeah I'm good it.
00:11:24
Speaker
with that. I'm slightly intrigued, but I also don't want to waste my time. No, it's true. i i didn't enjoy the the Netflix series as much as I thought I was hoping to Like, I really wanted to enjoy it. um I thought that there was a really good cast and I thought that they had a really good premise, but it it just got really slow.
00:11:44
Speaker
And the writing wasn't smart. The writing wasn't clever. It just seemed slow. And I and don't know. I guess it's one of those things I'd like to go back and finish.
00:11:56
Speaker
But i I'm not in a rush to do Well, if you didn't even do that, right, then yeah, that probably tells you. But it's funny because as a fan of something, you feel compelled you to collect them all, you know, like, you know, I should be watching this, but your gut says you're good.
00:12:14
Speaker
You know, it's a funny tug, right? Yeah. Yeah. Like, I feel weird about not watching it myself, you know, but chances are I'm never going to. You know, I kind of hope that what it meant, though, is that it it brought the show to new generation of kids that might have looked back and said, hey, you know, can we also watch the other stuff as well?
00:12:38
Speaker
Mm hmm. Now, here's the here's the weird one, and maybe you know more about this than I did, but to when I was reading here in RetroFan, they mentioned the ABC Saturday superstar movie Lost in Space by Hanna-Barbera.
00:12:56
Speaker
Yeah, I've seen the model sheets. Actually, the chariots there, um but I've never seen it. and i and Did it get made? No. So I did some research because I was like...
00:13:09
Speaker
What the what? Sure. Of course. There's Hanna-Barbera series. Yeah. So apparently it's it's another bunch of the family because they're also Robinsons, but it's not the ones that we know.
00:13:20
Speaker
But of course the- What's-his-face is there. Why don't we know his name? Dr. Smith. Yeah. Thank you. Dr. Smith. What a hard name to remember. Seriously. It's the worst name ever. Of course, he's there and the robot's there and the robot is purple and it's it's about Craig Robinson, who's just out of Space Academy.
00:13:40
Speaker
oh and he's he's in the Jupiter two, and he takes his younger brother link, and they're supposed to go from Earth to Saturn to drop off Dina Carmichael. And then of course, smash they're on an uncharted planet.
00:13:55
Speaker
So all that was made was a pilot Oh, okay. That's interesting. So they never actually got the go ahead to make the whole show. I wonder why they made a pilot because back then Hanna-Barbera just is like, here's your storyboards, take it or leave it, you know? So I wonder why they felt strong enough.
00:14:12
Speaker
I don't know. that's a good question. That's interesting. I wonder how many other pilots they'd made. Yeah. it It's very Hanna-Barbera. Oh yeah. Beautifully colored.
00:14:23
Speaker
And it's, it's, it's totally them. Like everybody just looks exactly like, you Hanna-Barbera characters. It feels like it should be filmation though. I think because thinking of my favorite Martian, you know, yeah and of course it's the same voice actor as as Dr. Smith. And so it's like, Oh, should be filmation. So it's weird that it's Hanna-Barbera, but.
00:14:42
Speaker
And they could have just used those Archie slides and and the Star Trek slides and Tarzan. Clone Ranger. right It would have cost them a about $50 to make this series. Some people are probably thinking, what do you guys mean?
00:14:59
Speaker
Do your homework, people. do your
Hanna-Barbera's Lost in Space Pilot Differences
00:15:01
Speaker
homework. So funny. So funny. But yeah, i was a little shocked by that. I did not i did not know that. Well, that's exciting then when you find out stuff like that.
00:15:09
Speaker
Yeah, it might be kicking around on YouTube, so I'm going to make watch it. Yeah, yeah. Right? Because, of course, there's a Munsters animated pilot on YouTube that has taken me like a year to get through. Every now and then I'll watch like a minute of it, and then I'm like, oh, I'm going to watch something else.
00:15:29
Speaker
A minute at a time. Yeah. Oh my goodness. So when I, when I was watching, i think it was years ago, like long, many years ago that I was actually watching the entire lost in space series.
00:15:41
Speaker
And I found it got really weird when it got to season three, which is when they like turned the color on. And suddenly it's all about carrots, giant space alien carrots, and everybody's in lavender. I'm like,
00:15:54
Speaker
something's weird here. Do you remember that? Well, is it that, well, no, like I have, I bought the Blu-ray box set of the series, but I haven't watched it. So I still don't know anything really about lost in space technically, but like, are they in lavender because it was lavender for black and white and there's no budget to change the suits. So you can just stay in the lavender suits.
00:16:15
Speaker
that's That's a good question. And I think that's probably, I'm going to so i'm going to go with that. That's a very specific color. you know It is. like If it was silver, silver would show up in black and white. Or it's like, we got to look like Batman. So, you know, bring in as much color as possible.
00:16:32
Speaker
Well, yeah, and it was, I think it's because the the show was becoming more a kid's show. So now that it was in color, it's like, well, let's focus on the kids. A lot of the episodes didn't have the parents. It was, you know, it was the doctor and the kids.
00:16:46
Speaker
Okay. right and the roman but he and the robot and they would go off on adventures and find alien carrots and things like that to to torment them nutritious and yeah well yeah that's how they battled them they had to eat the carrots by the end of the show and then they all had their vitamin c yay
00:17:08
Speaker
And it's so funny, too, because the the way that TV and and stuff worked back then, some of the the actors worked together. And ah Marta Kristen, who played Judy, had actually worked with Bill Mooney before.
00:17:23
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Yeah. So it was kind of weird that they ended up on the same show together as well. Yeah. She was also in, of course, everything, leave it to be. I'm just going to say, yeah, like she's, I can see her face and i'm like, yeah, she was in stuff.
00:17:35
Speaker
Yeah, she was project UFO and beach blanket bingo. Of course you got to go to the beach. Right. I have all those blue rays just so you know. have to watch We'll have to do a watch night.
00:17:47
Speaker
Well, they they're not for everyone. i mean, there it's not that they're dated, but they're a little they' a little tough to get through because they're not great films. yeah They're not fast-paced.
00:18:02
Speaker
You know what I mean? Not always the best stories. You know, California Beach, I'm there. Yeah, totally. Me too. Love to be there. what is that What is the beach movie that we were talking about last time?
00:18:15
Speaker
Back to the Beach? was Yeah, it was Back to the Beach. I have to do a rewatch on that. Speaking of beaches, we just did a rewatch of Jaws.
Jaws, Memes, and The Love Boat
00:18:24
Speaker
Oh, I have my IMAX tickets.
00:18:26
Speaker
Oh, I was going to ask you if you're going to go. I'm like, oh, are you going? That's really cool. Yep, yep, yep, yep. So did you just watch the first one? Yeah. Yeah. Just watch the first one. Oh, good.
00:18:38
Speaker
Yeah. It's really good. I need to text you something right now. Okay. Hold on. Okay. This will be funny. All right. Oh, is it the meme that's going around?
00:18:50
Speaker
Oh, I don't know. Which one? It is. It's one with the guy's head in the boat. Oh, from the love boat? Yes. Yeah. yeah got the love I was going to send you. Yeah.
00:19:02
Speaker
I saw it. I didn't know that. Ben sent it to me. then And then as soon as you said it, I'm like, oh, that's what that is. That's awesome. but That's somebody who's so got the right sense of humor.
00:19:15
Speaker
Oh, yeah. So you have to watch Jaws and Love Boat to get that joke. ah And I encourage both. just Just watch them. Not together, of course. But you'll notice that nobody in Love Boat goes in the water.
00:19:29
Speaker
Do they not? No, they stay on the boat for the most part. Yeah. Unless it's a two parter or a three parter, you know, where they get trapped on an island. But that's another story.
00:19:40
Speaker
Oh, yeah. That's a leather story. Isn't that usually when they get trapped in Australia? yeah Anyway, Jaws is wonderful. Yeah, Jaws was worth that was I was thinking about because we were talking about summer movies and i'm like, you know, Jaws is a summer movie. Oh, and so totally got to watch Jaws.
00:19:57
Speaker
And then I used a paperclip to save my page of retro fan where I was going to go next. And I was just like fidgeting and I did my paper clip and threw it away somewhere. I don't even know where it is. it's gone And i'm like, Oh my God, that's just so dumb. And it's so me to do that. That's so funny. That's hilarious. Where could it is have gone? It couldn't have gone far.
00:20:17
Speaker
I probably clipped it to something else. It's totally irrelevant. Now I have to go to the store and buy a 1000 pack of paper clips again. It's good thing you can go to dollar M and get a thousand for $4 Is it?
00:20:30
Speaker
Used to be $1, but now it's $4. Okay, so
00:20:36
Speaker
that's not the sound i wanted to hit. So let me try this again. that was a bunch of sharks clapping. yeah They're like, what, you're going to the beach? Yes, we're going to the beach.
Character and Instrument Matching Game
00:20:46
Speaker
We're going to the beach. All right, we're going to play a game. This is ah from RetroFans Too Much TV Quiz. So I'm going to ask, I'm going to give you a character's name. You have to tell me what instrument they played. Oh, interesting. Yeah. i hope but and Hopefully you didn't memorize the 2021. March 2021. Well, possible.
00:21:07
Speaker
march twenty twelve bowl
00:21:11
Speaker
All right. um Morticia Adams. And that would be Morticia from the Adams family. What instrument does she play? God, people are probably screaming right now the answer.
00:21:22
Speaker
Yeah, hopefully. I wish. I'm trying to think. Like, I don't know why I can't picture. Like, I don't want to know. is It's not the violin, is it? No, it is not. So you get one of these.
00:21:36
Speaker
ah Your favorite sound. right So then my next my next guess is the triangle. Triangle? Are you kidding me with that? I don't know. I don't remember. No, it's not. i hit the wrong sound cue. Oh, no. You're so close.
00:21:53
Speaker
No, she plays the shamisen. And what is that? It is a Japanese. It's that sort of long stringed. it looks like a guitar. japanese yes You sit on the floor and pluck it.
00:22:03
Speaker
yes ah Okay. There we go. So hopefully you'll get this one. All right. Okay. Tracy Partridge. Take your time. Think about this.
00:22:17
Speaker
I'm going to go with my last answer. Oh, well, hold on though. They could have given you a couple of answers there. They could have said tambourine or they could have said triangles. So which one? Let's go with the tambourine.
00:22:30
Speaker
You got it. Really? So if you don't know who that was, she is a multi instrument. She was so talented. So talented. That's Tracy Partridge, the youngest Partridge in the Partridge family.
00:22:43
Speaker
Another awesome TV series that we grew up with. Okay, next up. Fat Albert. Oh, that squeeze thing. It's like a squeeze box. Yes. Does it have a name?
00:22:57
Speaker
ah no. Hold on. Hold on. i'm trying to think what it actually is. It's it's it's it's like a heater. Yeah. Yeah. You're getting closer.
00:23:09
Speaker
What do call those things? I had one when I lived in Vancouver. That rad that makes heat with water. Yes. What is the full version of rad?
00:23:20
Speaker
Radiator. Yes. And what was the instrument that he turned the radiator into? Radiator accordion? Accordion, yes. Made from a radiator.
00:23:34
Speaker
yeah that's really the answer. Wonderful. So yeah, that's Fat Albert from the animated series, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids. By Filmation. Yes. Awesome show. Grew up with that one as well. Yeah, loved it. Okay.
00:23:48
Speaker
So the next one up is Radar O'Reilly. Like Radar as in, is that MASH? Yes. Radar from MASH. The 1970s television show. Let's go with the kazoo because I have no idea.
00:24:06
Speaker
What? I don't know. now That's too long ago. No, he's he's the bugler. Oh, yeah. Excuse my prayer. You can cover that over with an... er Yeah, totally. I'm sure I All right.
00:24:23
Speaker
Yeah, no, he he's the bugler and he would actually go out and bugle in the morning. I can see him. yeah Yeah, totally. So I was from MASH about the Korean War. Yes. Hopefully I got that fact right. Okay, the next one up is Data from Star Trek The Next Generation. Oh, come on. I didn't watch that show either.
00:24:44
Speaker
i'll go with my last answer, the kazoo. a ah so close so close keyboards no he played the violin yeah he played the violin thought the captain would have played the violin no he plays the flute no he really does I believe you you got the hair for it so or not uh okay next up beaver cleaver
00:25:17
Speaker
Well, okay, so there was an episode where he sent away for an accordion um yeah and got caught for not returning it, and he was told to pay the full price of the accordion.
00:25:31
Speaker
um Is it the accordion? a No, sorry. He actually played clarinet. Okay. So I got one last TV character and you tell me what instrument they played.
00:25:48
Speaker
All right. ah Please get this one because I've got my finger already on the applause button. That's very funny. Veronica Lodge. In case anybody doesn't know who that is, that is Veronica from the Archies, also in the band, the Archies, and very famously played what instrument?
00:26:09
Speaker
The organ. Oh, I'm sorry. That's the wrong answer. Oh, hell no, it's not. Well, okay. Some of us call them electric keyboards, but you can call it an organ because I think it was more of an electric keyboard. It's an organ.
00:26:25
Speaker
Thank you, audience. I'll give you that one. Thank you. And thank you, Lodge Enterprises for furnishings. Totally. Beautiful white. lovely electric keyboard. but ah That was awesome.
Behind the Scenes: Editing and Staying Awake
