Introduction to 1989 with Josh and Tyler

00:00:01
Speaker
Okay, so we're going to kick off our episode. we've got We've got a year to talk about, and I don't know how much Tyler has, but um I have a couple things to share about our year this year. We're going to talk about 1989, but before we do that, going to introduce

Birthday Experience with Gary Newman

00:00:16
Speaker
myself. My name is Josh Downing, and I'm your host, and I have with me my very special guest, Tyler. Hey, Josh. Hey, everybody.
00:00:25
Speaker
So good to have you here. um i want to Before I jump into our our musical selections for today, i want i just want to talk about the fact that I got to spend my birthday this year with Gary Newman.
00:00:38
Speaker
So Gary played the concert hall, which I haven't been to in like 40 years. And I got to do the VIP, my gosh, what is called now?
00:00:52
Speaker
Soundcheck. So he wasn't doing meet and greets anymore. was just doing

Exclusive and Humorous Gary Newman Memorabilia

00:00:56
Speaker
the sound check. So it was, uh, it was pretty cool. It was pretty cool. So just kind of hanging out. There was, uh, 12 of us in total.
00:01:07
Speaker
And, uh, we got like VIP passes and we got, uh, these cool gift bags with some records and stickers and, um, uh, coaster, very important. Numinoid coasters. You can see here.
00:01:22
Speaker
So this stuff wasn't available to buy? ah no I think that he's got it he's got a secret store. And I didn't know about this because the the coaster actually has a ah like a QR code on the back that allow you to go to the secret store and you can get some of these things on the secret store.
00:01:39
Speaker
But yeah, it wasn't a lot of the stuff wasn't regular stuff. And the records are really cool because he autographed everything too, which was really nice. That's kind of funny about the the coaster. It's like the sales kind of drop a bit when they get out of England. Yeah, totally. Totally. But the craziest stuff was there was ah a bumper sticker, which is never going to go in my car, and an air freshener, which is never going to go in my car. But it's that... it's that Does it smell like Gary's?
00:02:13
Speaker
I would hope not. Gary after a show. um That would just be awful to do to anybody. But it's got that Gary Newman. I've got more. He's very popular for that, you know, in cars song. You know, in cars. So now here's an air freshener you can put in cars.
00:02:33
Speaker
Okay. But here's the thing. The air freshener joke is Gary Newman is here in my car. It says that on the air freshener. Oh, it does it? That's awesome.
00:02:45
Speaker
So that's why it's another reason why it's never going in my car, because I don't want people think Gary Newman's in my car. That's so funny. And he did write other songs. Yes.
00:02:57
Speaker
Amazing performer. it was It was a kick-ass show.

Concert Experience and Interactions with Gary

00:03:00
Speaker
It was just amazing. The the the hard part for me is because I'm so old, um it was a lot of standing. I got there at like 4.30 in the afternoon.
00:03:09
Speaker
They let us in for five. i think the band came out and we're doing stuff just after five. And they were done before six. And then we had to stand around and wait till the doors opened until at seven.
00:03:24
Speaker
Then we had to wait until the opening band came on then after the opening band. And then finally Gary came on closer to nine. And I'm still standing. The good news is that I got to stand at the front. They let the ah the VIP people in first. So I got to lean on the the fence. Cool.
00:03:42
Speaker
and i guess i i was Sorry, last time I was there was camera obscure and I did the same thing, just leaned against it. And it's very comfortable. Yeah. And it's a great spot to be.
00:03:52
Speaker
you know, were you at the left or the right or the center? i was just, uh, just right of center. Yeah. Yeah. That's where I was. Yeah. It was just, it was a good spot to stand. um I, so so I could get some good pictures and I got some really good pictures. It's such a great venue now.
00:04:08
Speaker
Yeah. like Yeah. It's just, you walk in and it's like, wow, this place is great now. Yeah. It's really and sharp looking. I also liked that there's some seats up top. Cause maybe if I were to go there again, I'd sit down because it's not, you're not far from anything. It's quite a small venue, right? Yeah.
00:04:26
Speaker
Yeah. So, but it was, it was great. It was, uh, it was awesome to spend my birthday with Gary Newman himself. I wanted to scream, it's my birthday, but I didn't. So even though it wasn't a meet and greet, like, was he talking to you guys?
00:04:42
Speaker
Very little. must be little odd, right? Like, if it's a, if it's ah ah I just noticed something in your background. Oh, my gosh, that's so funny. What did you just notice? A certain camera I used to own. Oh, yeah, it's right there.
00:04:57
Speaker
Yes, it is. ah okay We'll save that for another episode. We'll save that for the 1999 episode. Exactly. We'll be back.
00:05:08
Speaker
Oh my

Challenges and Humor in Gary Newman's Life

00:05:09
Speaker
gosh, that's too funny. So I was going to say, like even with a sound check, like it's so informal. yeah you know and And for him not to just sort of step off the stage and just kind of shake everybody's hand or something for two seconds. you know I'm not criticizing. I just thought maybe there'd be a bit of banter or something. You know, he was he was very warm and friendly because a couple of people are are like the diehard fans that have been to every show in the world and follow him around. So, of course, when they're like, hey, Gary, he's like, oh, hey. And then somebody yelled out, you know happy birthday because his birthday was a few weeks earlier. And he's like, there's no such thing. Oh, no. But he wasn't mad. He was just kind of making a joke about it.
00:05:49
Speaker
So I just saw something that said, like, he's 90% deaf. that true? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah that's yeah. He just said that in an article. Because like you said, somebody yelled out. And I thought, well, if you heard it, he must be fine.
00:06:02
Speaker
I mean, you know, that that deafness could just mean that things are muffled. Yeah. Yeah. So, but yeah, he, um, yeah, all that, all that music stuff and having those, those plugs in his ears all the time.
00:06:13
Speaker
Okay. Damaged his hearing over the years. So, but he, it's so funny too, because, um, I did not know this, but the photographers are only allowed to be in the front of the stage for three songs.
00:06:28
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. So there was six photographers running back and forth. Yeah. So they were all running around, but, um, cause somebody earlier had talked to the photographers cause they knew them and and they said, how many songs do you get to do now? And the guy said, three.
00:06:43
Speaker
yeah And they're all like, oh, yeah, that's that's pretty bad because you got to get your three. But it was so funny because the band knew this because they were so freaking animated for the first three songs. And then, of course, everybody was kind of just toning it down just a little bit so because we're all nearly 70. And I was to say, we've all been standing. This is hard to do. Yeah.
00:07:06
Speaker
And there's no coasters anywhere. No, there was no coasters. I think I left them all here in my car. So, yeah, but and the two guitar guys, they're so awesome. And it's so funny because they're such nice guys.
00:07:21
Speaker
But then when they come out in their makeup and they're, you know, they're like demon priest dresses and they're jumping around like they're possessed. You're like, whoa, that you're not the nice guy that was just chatting with, you know, la at in ya earlier. But yeah, they're they're such performers and so dynamic. So it it was it was a great show.
00:07:42
Speaker
Well, anybody who's never seen Gary would have no concept of of what a rock show it is no one because a lot of people are like oh he's he's that in cars guy right right yeah yeah it's like no that was a long time ago and yeah it's not the the dark goth rock yeah for years right yeah totally yeah it was funny too because the couple of people in the vip group were were this older couple and i was looking at them going oh yeah crap they're probably younger than me yeah but uh They were just so like secretary and accountant looking. i was like, are you guys ready for this? Like,
00:08:21
Speaker
Do you really know what you're in for here tonight? I guess they were because they came out smiling. They they were having a great time. That's cool. Yeah. And he did a couple of the songs he did in the soundcheck were not songs he played in the show, which was really cool.
00:08:35
Speaker
Huh. That was a bit of our VIP treat. He said that. um Oh, yeah. That's the guy that um let us in. Basically explained the story and said that Gary needed a break from some of the the meet and greets because they got out of control because he's got a lot going on his life right now. His brother had just recently passed. His wife's in surgery right now. She can't move one of her arms.
00:09:00
Speaker
And she was still in the UK during this tour. So Gary was like, I don't need all of the people trying to hug me and crying. and So it was just a, I just, I'll do a sound check and then I'm done. Like, I just want to do my show and get on.
00:09:15
Speaker
ah So I feel for him. Like he's got a lot going on. Yeah, because, you know, these artists who still commit to touring, it's got to be rough when you get older and, you know, you genuinely want to do it.
00:09:31
Speaker
But at the same time, life is just sort of not agreeing with it. Right. You know. yeah Yeah, it's totally it. And the cool thing is apparently he he had his daughters on most of the tour with him as well. So one of his daughters came out and actually sang one of her songs. It was really cool. Oh, yeah. Cool.
00:09:48
Speaker
Cool. All

'That TV Sound' Podcast and 1989 Memories

00:09:49
Speaker
right. Let's get started. We've got a podcast to go here. So let's have a good time.
00:10:09
Speaker
You're listening to That TV Sound with your host, Josh Downing, a Gen X for Life podcast.
00:10:19
Speaker
Awesome. I'm already thinking of trying to write a new a new theme song. Oh? Yeah, you know, ad d brain. It's what I do.
00:10:31
Speaker
New hobbies every week. ah So we're here to talk about 1989. 1989!
00:10:39
Speaker
This is not on your favorite year list, was it? Oh, contrary. Good. I'm glad I picked a good one. Don't forget, these years are totally randomly picked.
00:10:51
Speaker
We do not discuss them in advance. This is true. It is really true. It is really true. I gave myself like three minutes before I started sitting down, setting up to kind of go, what the heck happened in 1989?
00:11:06
Speaker
right. So what was going on for you in 1889? Oh, gosh. 1989. oh gosh. Okay. So it's an it's a great year full of a lot of hardship, but a great year.
00:11:22
Speaker
And um lost somebody incredibly special and tried to start over in Montreal. And... left a job that i shouldn't have um to just start over um but you know kind of got it all back again by the end of the summer um into you know 2.0 um i was 20. was thinking i was 19 but for most of the year i was 20. so it's like okay you've left those teams I'm good with it.
00:12:01
Speaker
You know, I loved being a teenager. I loved it. And I had an incredible teenage life, but there was something about leaving that part behind that agreed with me.
00:12:12
Speaker
You know what i mean? It's like, okay, let's, let's step forward, you know? Um, so, 1989, I won't hog the music. We'll talk about that. but, um,
00:12:25
Speaker
for all the bad of 89, it kind of doesn't matter because the music was incredible. And um there was it was a year of really great friendships.
00:12:40
Speaker
And all of my bands were active, all of them except one. And nobody toured. But the the the records were just weekly, you know, um and
00:12:57
Speaker
Wow. it it's it's It's a heavy year, but it's a great year. Sorry, how about you? Yeah.

Life and Music Scene in 1989 Toronto

00:13:03
Speaker
you know You know, it's funny you say that because I mean, for you, i think it was it was a different, you were just starting out your life. I was in a transitional period in my life.
00:13:13
Speaker
And i think in 89, I was still working in a restaurant in Vancouver And I packed up my bags and I moved to Toronto again. choice. This was my second time trying to to make Toronto work.
00:13:31
Speaker
And I got another restaurant job and it was so, it was a really good one. I met some really amazing people. um i had a very short, but very exciting 1989.
00:13:44
Speaker
ninety eighty nine And it was ah it was a bit of a life changer at that point for me. So music was still really part of my life, but so much else was going on that I think that the music that I was kind of listening to was more just, I was out dancing and clubbing and, you know, socializing with people. Cause that's what we did back then before we had phones to hold. loved it miss it i know. Right. So I think I wouldn't, it's so funny. Cause then I was trying to think about music in that year. it was,
00:14:17
Speaker
It was a year of club music and some of the best. um I just because I'll bring out my song now. ah The song for me for nineteen nine was Round and Round by new Order.
00:14:31
Speaker
from technique remember how big at that point new order and depeche mode were yeah it was just like america just yeah like just went nuts and everything changed again it was a huge transitional period for music as well like it was just massive and it and and it was you know we had airplay like their new order was massive And even then, like with with Round and Round and Fine Time, such a great album. And i i picked up my my cassette tape because I was cassettes at this point. I guess that's probably, cassettes were easier because I could bring them with me, right?
00:15:11
Speaker
And I also had them in my little my Walkman when I would travel. But yeah, it was it's such a great album and it brings back such amazing memories.
00:15:22
Speaker
I'm just thinking, ah had a job that I liked very much. And when I left it to move away and they said, what can we do to get you to stay?
00:15:37
Speaker
What job would you want? I said, I want to be the buyer. And the owner said, okay, you're the buyer. And I said, I still got to leave. out And I, you know, I've always said I have no regrets in this life. And I don't know if that is one of them. It's certainly,
00:15:55
Speaker
could be put on the shortlist, you know. um And even when I came back to Toronto, they called me for quite a while. And it was just like, yeah I was just in a headspace where I just need to change. you know I mean, I just need change that company eventually became entertainment one, but that would be years later.
00:16:14
Speaker
Oh, wow. Yeah. But wow yeah, but it's just, you know, when you're 20, it's not like being 30, 40, 50, 60. thirty forty fifty sixty You know I mean? So anyway, it just, forgive me for talking. It just kind of crept into my brain just now. And I'm like, do I regret that? I'm like, well, it's a little too late to think about it. So carry on Exactly.
00:16:39
Speaker
Yeah, it's weird because you're right. Like when you're 20, 22, 23, you still have your whole world ahead of you and everything just seems like, well, this can't be the best. I'm still going to have some more awesome stuff.
00:16:52
Speaker
Yeah, that you know that's a good point. It's like, well, I've already seen what this is and I can see what it's going to be. But what about everything else? And plus, this is also when Toronto was still a world of opportunity.
00:17:05
Speaker
you know it was unlimited back then you know you could be whatever you want back then do whatever work, whatever, you know, so why would i continue to do something? I already know a little too well. Right. So, yeah. And I think it was the same for me being, uh, being in Vancouver.
00:17:23
Speaker
And at that time too, Vancouver was feeling small for me and I wasn't feeling like, you know, there was much going on. So, you know Expo had come and gone and Expo didn't really do anything for for my world yeah being out there except for make things more expensive. But, you know, it seemed like all the opportunities were going to be in Toronto.
00:17:49
Speaker
And that's why I, that was why i just packed up and just said, I'm going to go try Toronto for a while. Right. Somebody sub sublet my apartment. So I didn't have to take anything with me other than just my clothes.
00:18:00
Speaker
And I just crashed on somebody's, you know, on somebody's floor and basically just said, I'm going to live with you for a few weeks and see how things go. What was that? My back's going to be really sore. it Totally.
00:18:14
Speaker
Yeah. And I'm going to be a pain in the ass to live with, but you know, just deal with it. And then, you know, they're like, who are you again? I'm like, come on. We met last time I was in trial. Yeah.
00:18:28
Speaker
So yeah, it was ah it was a very interesting time. um Obviously, I didn't make Toronto work that time. too many Too many things went wrong in that trip, but it was it was a life-changing trip, though. It was a short period.
00:18:44
Speaker
I mean, I had i had my my all my belongings stolen from the restaurant I worked at, and then i it was just and i I got really sick, and I was living in a hotel for a while. It was just weird, weird nightmare stuff.
00:18:58
Speaker
but what's So what's your song? What's your 1989 song? Oh, I guess that it's an album track.

Transvision Vamp and Vinyl Collecting Insights

00:19:08
Speaker
It's Kiss Their Sons by Transvision Vamp off their Velveteen album that came out that year. Nice.
00:19:16
Speaker
It's just... it it's just I'm a sucker for anything that's big and raw with a lot of attitude.
00:19:28
Speaker
And that song just still gives it today, you know, and like,
00:19:40
Speaker
Well, it's it it is the album cut of the 80s for me, you know, not single but album track. And it's funny um because that album, um when the picture disc of the LP came out,
00:19:58
Speaker
And only the record peddler had it and it was beautiful and it came in a gatefold and ah bought it. Of course, the day it arrived here and ran home, opened it flipped it over. and on the the back of it, there was a bit of that spider cracking webbing. can't remember what they call it around the hole the center hole yeah And I was just like, no, no, no. And I'm like, I got to go back. I got to get another one. Right. But they're never going to let me exchange this thing. Right. And anybody who knows the peddler knows at that time there was that giant, um he was like a like a doorman working there. And I thought, oh, he's just going to punch me the sidewalk. Right.
00:20:37
Speaker
And, and we'd never spoken, even though I was there every week for, for, that point or seven. And so I went back as fast as possible. And I just said, you know, I'm really sorry, but and I showed him the back of it. I'm like, I just want a perfect one. And he's like, Oh yeah, no problem. Like, well i like you know, it's like, that was the summer we became friends. You know what I mean? But it's just, it's just sort of funny. I've never forgotten it. He was such a gorilla, you know, and I, and I'm just like, wow, if you did that,
00:21:08
Speaker
you're either a music fan or you're just a sweetheart, you know, because I never, maybe both I just thought I'm going to have to buy another one, which wasn't cheap, you know, but, uh, import vinyl was like when it was an album, it was like, Oh, so expensive, you know, 12 inches weren't bad, but a full album was always big bucks. Wasn't it like $8 or something?
00:21:32
Speaker
I think it was probably more like 30. Ouch. yeah That's what they are now. Well, actually, I think they're up to 50 now. i don't know how anybody can collect vinyl today.
00:21:43
Speaker
I don't know. I mean, i i I'll still shop the the used stores. I'm like, I'm i'm good. Is there anything for Record Store Day this year you care about? No, I was actually going to ask you about that. I just looked through the list. I'm like, no, there's nothing for me this year. Oh, you're lucky. Yeah, I'm there's There's something, but I have it on CD, so like, well, I don't really need it.
00:22:05
Speaker
So I'm relieved. That's good. right I don't want to be lining up outside 6 a.m. again. It was fun. it was fun last year. but you know i but And the thing of it is, like for months, and I'm talking months later, everything I bought was easily available online. Yeah. Just regular price.
00:22:26
Speaker
yeah whether it was here or overseas all of it and i'm like hold on there's no way that was limited to a thousand pieces and that was limited to 800 pieces like there's no way you know I'm not calling it a scam, but I just know i don't get that those numbers. I'd rather it say it was limited to $1,200 for North America. I'm like, oh, okay, that makes sense. You know what I mean? But you know these limiteds, I'm like, I don't know. Everything's still around and it's still regular price.
00:22:55
Speaker
But anyway, so, well, that's cool. Less to worry about. Yeah, that reminded me too that I should go and take another look and see if I can find a copy of Simple Minds Neopolis on vinyl.
00:23:10
Speaker
Because that was one of the records for record store day records I never did get. Like from years previous? Yeah, it was a few years back. And i they did they just they ran it as an RSD and then I never saw it.
00:23:25
Speaker
I regret not buying the Easter Beagle colored vinyl. You know, I'm like, oh, I don't really need that. I don't need, there was six or five different colored ones and you don't know what you were getting. Right.
00:23:38
Speaker
And I'm like, well, what if I get a color I don't like? Cause if I would open it Right. Yeah. And I'm like, oh, whatever. I don't really need this. Now they go for $150 Ouch. And I'm like, well, of course, because it's a Peanuts collectible, right? It's not yeah a record collectible, right? So I don't regret it, but it's just like, well, I had the opportunity. It was right there. But nope.
00:23:59
Speaker
Nope. Ah, damn. That's okay. We have the Halloween ones. That's cooler. Yes, we do. So awesome. Much cooler. So awesome.
00:24:10
Speaker
But you know what? I think we it's time. I think it's time to, um, wait a minute. What's going on? My sound effects are gone. I'm going to have to work on that. So we're going to have to just make it without sound effects, but we're going to play some, uh, some, uh, Trivial Pursuit, totally eighties music trivia. Cause you love this so much. Oh no.
00:24:31
Speaker
okay What Bruce Springsteen song? Exactly. Imagine imagine a sound effect. do lily lily hey What Vancouver band had a 1982 hit which asked, don't it make you feel like dancing?
00:24:47
Speaker
Did you say 1982? Yeah. yeah Vancouver band? Yeah. Well, there was more than the Paolas. was going to say, it's not the Paolas.
00:24:59
Speaker
Your favorite Vancouver band. Oh, was it Skinny Puppy? No. oh That would have been cool. The Paolas are my favorite Vancouver band. Yes. I thought you were being facetious. Oh, yeah. no So I totally don't know the answer. Okay. The Headpins.
00:25:16
Speaker
Oh, okay. All right. I don't even remember the song, but i I didn't know they were local for me either. That's funny. Isn't that weird? No. Weird. I don't miss them.
00:25:28
Speaker
yeah I don't either. ah Here's another one for you. do little the What memorable song was a top five hit for Willie Nelson in 1982 and for the Pet Shop Boys in 1988? Oh, yeah.
00:25:45
Speaker
oh
00:25:49
Speaker
yeah um
00:25:54
Speaker
Is it You Were Always on My Mind? You were always on my mind. There we go. Hopefully don't get sued for singing that. Yeah, exactly. Your whole channel gets shut down. Sorry, Willie.
00:26:07
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, very always i sorry, Mr. Pet. I didn't mean to step on your copyright there. Bonus question, how old is Willie Nelson? He's 700, I think.
00:26:21
Speaker
i think I think he was 500 in 1982 because he was from the 1400s. For sure. for Pretty much the same today. Just a little thinner. Totally.
00:26:34
Speaker
All right. du Oh, another Canadian band. do You love these Canadian band ones. What Canadian band cracked the charts with On The Loose from their 1982 album Worlds Apart?
00:26:49
Speaker
Is it Rush? Rush? No. That's a guess. Sorry. Yeah. No, it was a good guess because that's the only other Canadian band other than Gowan. Okay. Is it Triumph?
00:27:01
Speaker
Close. It is a one word answer. Trooper? yeah it's keep going. ah Can't think fast enough. Lay it on me.
