00:00:53
Speaker
Hello everybody, this is Robbie Spear-Miller, the host of the Habit of Possibility podcast. And today I'm really looking forward to the interview we're gonna do with Vanessa Vargas, who started the company called PSW to the rescue.
00:01:09
Speaker
And she actually has helped been helping my father who needs help. um you know he He needs some help with managing everyday life. And so her

Leading with Care and Networking

00:01:19
Speaker
company and her staff has been helping, they've done this amazing job.
00:01:23
Speaker
And so today I want to explore with Vanessa the the journey of becoming an entrepreneur. So welcome Vanessa. Thank you, thank you, Robby, for having me.
00:01:34
Speaker
So I like to start by telling you guys um my journey, how my journey started as an entrepreneur. and So I started with that deep passion for caring, care and community as a personal support worker.
00:01:49
Speaker
And I saw firsthand the challenges that seniors, especially those with Alzheimer's and dementia, faced every day. And I knew i wanted to do more, not just for them, but for the families struggling to find compassionate and reliable care.
00:02:08
Speaker
And that's when PSW to the Rescue was born. It wasn't an easy road, entrepreneurship. It's it's a leap of faith. And I took a ah that leap while raising my four kids and managing a household.
00:02:25
Speaker
But what kept me going was my belief in leading with care first And not just with my business, but in every day, every interaction, i wanted to build something that's truly made a difference in people's lives.
00:02:41
Speaker
As

Challenges in Corporate Care

00:02:42
Speaker
I grew my business, yes, I realized that networking and relationships were just as important as providing excellent care. And that's why I became deeply involved in building businesses connections.
00:02:56
Speaker
And I started my own ah networking group. So far from what you've shared, um I think a really important thing you're highlighting is that you were driven by this mission and this passion, and you saw a need and you felt very ah compelled to provide a service that wasn't being provided.
00:03:14
Speaker
So you noticed that in the the work of PSWs, which is for people who don't know what that stands for, it stands for personal support worker, or somebody who helps people with everyday tasks for people who can't do it for themselves. So for example, my dad has had a stroke, he's in a wheelchair, and he needs help with many things. And so your stuff helps with those tasks and companionship and making the quality of life better.
00:03:40
Speaker
Yes, we did. So you had been working in the field for a corporation before you started your business. And yeah my understanding is that through that, you saw where the the holes were in care or the the the priorities weren't quite where you saw they needed to be from a human point of view.
00:04:04
Speaker
And so you you were really compelled to offer a better service. was that right? Yes, yes. So there's no communication really with the family and the care stuff.
00:04:17
Speaker
And it was just, and the the thing that they do too, they also said they send different PSWs. So there's not a consistent relationship. And the the family member, it feels so stressed out. They feel like they have no...
00:04:34
Speaker
no solution because of all this different PSWs and they keep addressing it, but there's no solution. So I said, I can't stand behind and just, you know, let it happen. I got to do something about it.
00:04:48
Speaker
And that's why I created PSW to the rescue. And when families are in that situation, and I personally have been through it for the five past five and a half years with both my mother and my father, um which has been quite an interesting experience. It's been definitely an education in how our system handles getting older and what you can do as a family member.
00:05:12
Speaker
And so you're already dealing with a lot of crisis and a lot of unmet needs when you're in that situation. And so it is wonderful to have people come in who really care and know what people need. it So from a client point of view, I'd say that's a big relief to know that that's being taken care of.
00:05:33
Speaker
Yes, and as you know, ah we we like to take pictures and send you a report ah while the visit is going on. And it gives you peace of mind. oh my God, okay, someone's there to help my dad the right way.
00:05:45
Speaker
And you' are able have you're able to put your input, what you want, the care to be, you know, throughout the process that they're there to help your dad. which is a big peace

Mindset for Entrepreneurial Success

00:05:55
Speaker
of mind for you. it gives you a big relief that you have a saying in your dad's care.
00:06:00
Speaker
And it's not just you're hiring me to do ah my job. is um ah you know I like to keep you part of it. Not just, you know here's the PSW and my bill is at the end of the week.
00:06:12
Speaker
Yeah, it's on ah it's on a human level and you're you're approaching it that way. So one thing I've found is that a lot of the companies that offer these types of services have categories of services and and they stay within those categories and a lot of things fall through the cracks or it becomes difficult to accomplish certain things.
00:06:34
Speaker
And what I love about your approach, in addition to the real true care you give people and the passion for that, is that you're flexible and you're willing to look at the specific situation and and do what's what's needed. So that's really great. Yeah, yeah so we also, like, we tailor the care to the person's needs.
00:06:57
Speaker
So it's not just one fit one shoe fits all, right? So it's, we like to tailor. So if, you know, if, ah mate no like it ah once like, services for one person may not work for another. So we always start to improve, make it better, how to, you know, give the family the ah support that they need, because there's that's why they're hiring us, to give them the support they're looking for. So I'm happy to do that.
00:07:24
Speaker
Yeah. So in a bigger picture way, like for me, before I became an entrepreneur, I also used to work in the corporate world. And I too, it didn't quite work for me, right? it I definitely was not as invested in what I was doing. Like now I'm very passionate about what I do.
00:07:41
Speaker
um But it seemed kind of like a

Starting a Business: Passion and Rewards

00:07:43
Speaker
mystery about how to start a business. I don't come from an entrepreneurial family. um And so my parents are medical doctors and I grew up with a lot of people who work more, you know, in the professions and, you know, teachers and doctors and lawyers and that kind of thing.
00:07:58
Speaker
And so owning a business and being an entrepreneur seemed like this very foreign thing. And I would see other people do it. And, you know, it was kind of like this black box that seemed kind of magical. I'm like, how do they do that?
00:08:10
Speaker
And so I remember when I was working in the corporate world for years, I wanted to leave and do what I do, which is I'm a hypnotist and I train other hypnotists on how people make their lives better with hypnosis, whether it's their personal life or their professional life.
00:08:26
Speaker
And what inspired me to do this was that I wanted to change myself. I knew that there were things about me that weren't the way I wanted them to be. And I didn't know how to change them, and I was very frustrated about that.
00:08:39
Speaker
And so through the the learning and the work I do, I discovered how to do that, and that's what made me very passionate about the mission that we have here um at Hypnosis Training Canada and MindLink Consulting, is we're helping people make their life the best it can be.
00:08:56
Speaker
And so i think that um from the point of view of moving from working for a company to starting your own business, there's ah you know I'd love to share some insights with people between you and me of what can help them and and about doing that, because i sure could have used that at the time when I was starting my business. right I didn't have a lot of support that way. So...
00:09:22
Speaker
So what would your advice be to people who are looking to start a and an entrepreneurial business? ah So um my advice would be for someone that wants to start entrepreneurial business. um I would say, you know look at the pros and cons. you know You have to first to start from there.
00:09:43
Speaker
What's gonna make you, you have to be happy with what you're doing because what's the point of leaving something that you're you're comfortable having a paycheck, but you have to have the passion behind it because that makes it a big difference because the people that you're gonna touch lives,
00:10:02
Speaker
it's ah It's another level. like For me, being an entrepreneur, like I'm touching so many people's lives, and it makes me so happy that with what I'm doing, i can help others.
00:10:14
Speaker
and the it It's very rewarding and so you have to look at that perspective so ah making sure that what you're starting to do it's you love it because It won't you won't be happy if you're not love what you're doing It'll just become like a routine and then that's not what you want you want to wake up every morning and say oh my god I like what I'm doing. I can't believe I'm going to go help so-and-so to be a better entrepreneur person or, you know, ah which like whichever field you're in.
00:10:48
Speaker
And it ah it all revolves around helping and caring for others. So... Just got to make sure that and it's like taking care of a child, I guess, in a way, right? Because you're nurturing the person to be a better person or, you know, to sell your products if you're doing a product and just, you know, do what you love.
00:11:07
Speaker
And if you do what you love, your business is going to be successful. Yeah. And that's great advice. And it doesn't matter what kind of business you have. You need to be passionate about whatever it is and really engaged with that. And then, know,
00:11:22
Speaker
yeah I found as an entrepreneur, you do need to be very flexible and willing to basically do whatever it takes and be willing to do whole range of activities. So, There can be a learning curve there. Sometimes some activities aren't necessarily your favorite or you might need to learn how to be confident doing certain things because maybe in the past you weren't as confident. I certainly needed to learn how to do that, like be confident with things like networking or being social or speaking in front of people or things like that, which is one of the things that I help many people with, training.
00:11:57
Speaker
um But it's it's you've got to be passionate about the end results and what you're delivering to people. And when you know that that really matters, you'll be willing to do what it takes. And I think that that that i clarity helps people stay with that because there are ups and downs, right?
00:12:17
Speaker
It's not always easy, but I don't know. um But I used to you know work at a corporate job and I do my usual hours and punch the clock. And now I'm willing to, you know, do so much more than I was then. i was very much then just putting in my time.
00:12:35
Speaker
And the degree of my engagement or my my enthusiasm or caring about what I do is on a whole different level than it was at that time. Yes. And also, um one more thing is this business is not just about transactions. It's about connections to take the time to get to know people and whether they are clients or partners or fellow entrepreneurs, so these relationships will open doors and create opportunities that you never expected. that's another. Yeah.
00:13:10
Speaker
I agree. You really want to be connected in your community. You want people to get to know you and she build the relationships. And then it's really interesting how sometimes things you never even imagined present themselves, right? Different opportunities.

Growth and Responsibility in Entrepreneurship

00:13:25
Speaker
Yeah.
00:13:26
Speaker
Yeah. Like, for example, Vanessa, earlier today, you and I were talking. And you were telling me how a lot of people said to you that you were like, they really looked up to you and they wanted to be able to start a business like your business.
00:13:40
Speaker
And so I said to you, hey Vanessa, I can teach you how to help those people start their businesses because you know the PSW side of things and i help people build businesses and get in the mindset and you know have the the skills to be able to do that. So this could be a great partnership.
00:13:59
Speaker
Yes. No, when you told me that, I was like, oh, my God, wow, I can help people, not just as, you know, families i getting PSWs, but also entrepreneur entrepreneurs, first ah just regular people transition into their own business. So that, to me, it's like it's very rewarding because I like helping people, and it makes me happy that, know,
00:14:22
Speaker
ah you know, every day I get to help someone. And to me, that's all. Like, I go to bed happy because I'm knowing that I made someone's day. So that's what my day consists of, making someone happy that I can help.

Balancing Business and Personal Life

00:14:36
Speaker
Yeah. Yes. And Vanessa, one thing I've noticed as an entrepreneur, and I don't know if you've noticed this as well, But what I've noticed is that it's very healthy to have the the level of responsibility of being an entrepreneur because it shows you what you're capable of and you you have to be a leader. You don't have a choice. You have to be a leader.
00:14:59
Speaker
Whereas if you work for a company, you're more of a rule follower, right? yeah And you're you're just fulfilling... you know check boxes i used to have a manager who would laugh about the ticky boxes that needed her to be checked right and as a an entrepreneur and business owner you need to like if there's a snowstorm and because of the snowstorm you lose business that's not under your control, but it still happens and that has to be okay.
00:15:26
Speaker
And then you do things on purpose that build your business or you might do things that you didn't even realize build your business. And it's kind of the whole range. So there's no such thing as fairness or rules or anything like that.
00:15:40
Speaker
It's like we're taking responsibility for going in a certain direction and making it as good as it can be in that direction. And my belief is that i I think that people, if they're ready and willing, yeah entrepreneurship isn't for everybody. Some people are perfectly happy to work at their you know clearly defined role and then leave at the end of the day.
00:16:01
Speaker
And I totally respect that. um But for people who are looking for something more, I think there's something about the human spirits that thrives on the challenge and the the ah the leadership role that we play as entrepreneurs.
00:16:18
Speaker
oh Yes, we we we carry many hats not just one hand So if you want to be an entrepreneur just gotta make sure that you're ready to be available 24 hours because Entrepreneur is not just a nine-to-five especially when you're starting out.
00:16:36
Speaker
It's constantly phone calls and constantly talking to your staff and just being on top of everything. it It's very challenging, but once you come overcome the little hump, things will get easier. It's just at the beginning when you try to get to know your company.
00:16:56
Speaker
Yeah, so when you're building it, that's true. And then as you build it, you start to have more choices and you really have more capacity to have a better quality of life eventually because your capacity to earn money is greater as an entrepreneur entrepreneur than it is working for somebody else.
00:17:15
Speaker
I mean, really, the sky's the limit, right? and yeah And as you do that, you you do have choices. So you might end up, you know, working at eight or nine o'clock at night, but during the day, you can take a few hours off to go see your child's play at school or go work out or, know,
00:17:34
Speaker
you know, meet a friend for lunch. So we have a lot more control over our schedules. Oh God. Yes, definitely. For sure. I love it because it's being an entrepreneur. It gives me, allows me to, uh, go book networking meetings and also, you know, time for my family and to spend them with my friends too. So it gives me all around, uh,
00:18:01
Speaker
ah flexibility, so which is very nice. And I don't have to answer to anyone, which is you know, you are your own boss. You get to make the choices. You're answering

Taking Action in Business

00:18:12
Speaker
to your mission, I think is what it is, right? Like, so the world gives you feedback. And of course, when you're on a mission, there are certain things that do have to happen if you're going to be loyal to the mission, but it's, it feels good because you know, matters.
00:18:28
Speaker
stomach Yes. Yes. Yes. And you need to take time to as an entrepreneur, make sure you take time for yourself. You can't forget. to take time for yourself because then you'll get burned out and then you won't be good for anyone. So make sure you're doing that.
00:18:46
Speaker
yeah What I've found is that there there's no end to the to-do list, right? There's always more you could be doing. So it doesn't end. It's not like somebody gives you this clearly defined project and you complete it and hand it back.
00:19:00
Speaker
There are always kinds of things you could do. and it's really making peace with that and choosing what the priorities are and what to let go of and when you need to take time for your family or for yourself.
00:19:12
Speaker
and to to trust that that it it will unfold and that you're enough on the mission that things are growing. So I think that that's a really, you know I think that's a tricky thing sometimes for entrepreneurs to learn in the beginning. It is, is. And be patient because nothing grows overnight.
00:19:31
Speaker
So you know make sure that you first start with a good foundation. so that's the important key. make sure that you're pra ah prioritizing your foundation because that's gonna define your business so um just keep in mind that Yeah, yeah. Another thing that I've found is that um as an entrepreneur, you really need to embrace learning because there are ups and downs.
00:19:59
Speaker
Things don't always go well. And sometimes people get stuck in a shame cycle about that where they blame themselves or they doubt their ability to do things or they get really stressed about it.
00:20:10
Speaker
And when that happens, they can't learn because they're just trying to escape the stress or the shame or whatever the bad feelings are around that. So it's it's really important as an entrepreneur to to be accepting of ourselves and then see it as like a really great challenge to learn from whatever happens and and get good feedback along the way.
00:20:34
Speaker
Yes. And I would say also too, like um entrepreneurship is not just about playing it safe. It's about trusting yourself and taking chances. And then like you said, learning from mistakes.
00:20:46
Speaker
And if you wait wait for everything to be perfect, you'll never start. Just

Vanessa's Background and Ethics

00:20:51
Speaker
take a leap. That's right. The action is where it's at. So if you're in your head or in the planning stage and you don't actually do something, that's not going to work. You have to be willing to jump in and and do and learn and it won't all work out. There'll be some things that don't work out.
00:21:09
Speaker
It's just the way it is. Yes, you can't punish yourself for it. just you take You learn from that lesson and then just move on and just don't try to make the same mistake.
00:21:20
Speaker
When I was a kid, we didn't we didn't have much, but I had a family that that loved me and that cared for me. And you know it I think it was just having a big family made a big impact because I received all the love from my family, the caring. And to me, that's all I knew as a kid, you know so to love and to care for others.
00:21:45
Speaker
And my uncles immigrated to Canada later on when I was older and that would often come to Peru and you know talk about Canada. And then when I was a little kid, I dressed up as a butterfly and my uncle, ah I would say,
00:22:03
Speaker
You know, I want to be the butterfly of Canada. And I was kind of manifesting it like and four years later, i came to Canada. and um And when i first came to Canada, I i saw it as a, you know, ah was not happy because everything I knew or the love, all the care that I have for my family in Peru was gone. They were not here with me physically.
00:22:30
Speaker
But later on, I realized that ah was actually a new beginning, a new start, you know, a new opportunity. When I was younger, I didn't realize that. But now that I'm older, I'm actually grateful to be here in Canada, building a future and now having a company. So I made the Canadian dream, you know, like I'm not just working for somebody, I'm working for myself and having my own company, I'm able to help others, you know, have a job and care for their families, not just like helping families, but also employees that can help their families. So

Community Connections and Leadership

00:23:08
Speaker
To me, that's very rewarding that I can help someone. Yeah. And the the experience you had growing up really shows because, Vanessa, when I see you at, let's say, a Burlington Chamber event, you're like so i and open. You make people feel loved even the first time you meet them.
00:23:27
Speaker
and you start, it just flows from you. and And when that happens, all kinds of possibilities open up, right? Like you're you're kind of, you're bringing them into their world. And I bet you've met some people who've never had that feeling from anyone before.
00:23:45
Speaker
For you, you grew up with that, right? But there are people who, nickmer they don't even, have people said that to you? Yeah, people have come up to me and I said, Vanessa, thank you so much for posting this event. I'm here because of you.
00:24:01
Speaker
I wanted to meet you. You're inspiring me to come out of Facebook and you know be here with you. Thank you so much for your time. And you know thank you for sharing this event with us.
00:24:13
Speaker
you know And they appreciate my knowledge and my help. So it's very nice to hear that. Yes, I can totally see why people are responding that way. So I think that's a really great thing to model because not everybody grew up with that love or that feeling that you have enough. Like I think for you, you really, you you feel like you have lots of love to give. So you're focused there and you trust as you feel that for people that you'll get you'll get what you need and you do.
00:24:44
Speaker
And is that accurate? Yes. Yes. No. Like, to me, I'm so happy that I can help everyone that comes my way and, that you know, make them feel better, like, happy that they're there. You know, you're here to make your business grow. If you don't come out and, you know, come and talk to other business owners, I'm not going to know about your business.
00:25:07
Speaker
So... You know, they're grateful that and I share that knowledge that I know because I seen it, it worked with me. Like, um and so I go to a few networking groups and one of the ladies said to me in our meeting, so we, I have um about four ladies. We meet up once a month just to have, you know, coffee and some nachos and another one's drink wines.
00:25:31
Speaker
And, uh, One of the ladies said to me, Vanessa, I don't know where you came from, but you came and you just like you plant yourself. I'm here. And just, you know, she's like, you just, everyone is, you know, can see the way you are, how happy and you treat others. It's just you know,
00:25:50
Speaker
like it makes happy Like it makes us happy to see you in the event. We look forward to seeing you. And also i have people ask me, Vanessa, ah you know, you never asked me to take a picture with me. Why haven't you asked me yet?
00:26:04
Speaker
was like, I didn't know that was a thing. Like, cause I just go in wherever I see. like close by and I just asked them to take a picture with me because to see that we were a event together and then some of them jumped around and say oh I finally made it to Vanessa's post now i mean I made the cut so that was funny and I can see I can see that they're watching my post so that makes me really happy and they look forward to my post And I bet from the point of view of of owning your company and managing your stuff that your way with people inspires them to be more loving and generous themselves because it's like you wrap people in this embrace and you're setting the culture and the tone for your company and then people follow along.
00:26:53
Speaker
So you might not realize that's happening because to you, this is just the way you are, right? Would you say that that's happening? and yeah So you're like, you know isn't everybody like this? But no, they're not like this.
00:27:06
Speaker
But but it I think it's an important point that whoever is leading a business or an organization, they're setting the tone and the people who are working for the organization are kind of joining them in that.
00:27:20
Speaker
And so it's really important to have leadership that cares and that's passionate about what's happening because you know it's catchy. It's contagious. Yes, yes. And I always, I lean with the heart. You know, I always treat

Discovering Potential and Helping Others

00:27:36
Speaker
someone, everyone, and not just ah the entrepreneurs that help, but the families and the employees that work for me.
00:27:44
Speaker
I treat them like they're like someone, not like just another person that, you know, passing by. you know, i treat them like humans and they feel the touch. And that's what I do. It makes me happy that Through my work, I can change people's lives.
00:28:01
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. And, you know, I think Vanessa, you and i are both great examples of how, when we were working in the corporate world, we were wasting a lot of our capacity to give, right? Because we were trying to fit in that mold. And both of us having left the corporate world and becoming entrepreneurs have like, I know for me, I've stretched myself in all kinds of ways where i would never have imagined way back then that I would be doing what I'm doing now or helping the number of people I'm helping or
00:28:32
Speaker
capable of doing the things I'm doing. um It wouldn't have even crossed my mind because I was in a very different place, but it's through that experience that you discover what you can do.
