Podcast Introduction and Game Preview

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everybody and welcome back to the Daily Manchester United with me Kieran McGinley. Yes it's just me today so enjoy these dulcet tones if you want to call them dulcet tones that's entirely up to you. You might have expected to hear a crossover today but that's going to be for tomorrow instead. Today you've just got me and we're going to have a look at a preview of two games in particular. We've got the game against Bodo Glimt coming up uh later today and of course we've got over the weekend the match against Everton on Sunday. Now obviously let's first focus on the Europa League which would be quite nice wouldn't it that'd be a nice thing to focus on to start with.

Europa League Standings and Format

00:00:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is two teams now that are well right in the thick of it when it comes to Europa League this is the crunching time of the season and let's face it United as much as I would hate to sort of say it we are undefeated uh Bodo glimpse currently 12th
00:01:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
in the table, Manchester United in 15th, Bodeglint with the seven points and United with the six. As I said, we are undefeated in this group, but that's not really saying a lot. Bodeglint have lost a game this season and in the Europa League. In fact, they lost their last one. So they're looking to pretty much bounce back from that one. And we're looking to try and take on all three points. Now, it comes as a no surprise to say that You know, my prediction of we could score zero points in the Europa League has now fallen very flat on its face. We've now scored six since I made that prediction. I know nothing. I don't know ball. But what we can say is now that, you know, the the hunt is on to finish in that top 24 at the very least.
00:01:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
If you're not familiar with the new system in Europe, it does take a little bit of getting used to. The top eight advanced to the knockout stage is straight away, and then it's positions nine to 24 then go into a playoff round against each other, and the winner of that playoff round will then progress as the second half of the knockout rounds.
00:02:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
the rest of the team's 25th downwards do not qualify for the knockout stages. So if you finish 25th to 36th, you are out of the Europa League and there's no dropping down. So if you finish outside of that top 24, you are out of European competition for the season. You don't drop drop down to the conference league. By the way, big fan of that rule. Bit more, you know, there's a bit in purpose in these group stages now. On the whole, I think the group stages are going to win people over eventually. I think, you know, I've been a fan of them. but I'm saying this as a football manager player. If you've played football manager, you've done plenty of seasons now with this Swiss style league. And it's not as bad. In fact, I think it's tougher.
00:02:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
in you know In the last season, and you had your four groups home or you four teams homing away and you know oh top two progress. Great, okay. Now though, you're against t every different team. you know you You might be playing teams you've never played before, which is pretty exciting in fairness. Four games are home, four games away.
00:03:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
the best go through and because it's only the top eight and because you don't necessarily play everybody in the top eight there's a little bit more yeah it's a bit more tantalizing you know you're not necessarily guaranteed to finish in the top eight you've really to be honest you could probably only lose one game and that might be enough to topple the table and find yourself outside of the top eight so you know we've really got to be on it for the rest now for the last four games pick up as many points as possible And yeah, considering we've had three draws and a win ah so far, it's been, yes. there's There's a couple of drop points in there. Let's let's not beat around the bush. ah You know, the Ericsson-Tvente mistake still haunts me. And of course, the capitulation we faced at, I believe it was Porto, wasn't it? um Yeah, I'm gonna look like an idiot now if I get that wrong. But anyway, it is what it is. um And I think when it comes down to it,
00:04:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got to get as many points as possible. 12 points has got to be on the cards

Team and Player Updates

00:04:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
for the closing stages. If we get that, you know we get 18 points, which isn't necessarily the the worst thing in the world. Will it be enough to get into the top eight? I don't know. It might just be on the cusp of it being out of the top eight there. But we'll wait and see. In terms of previewing the game,
00:04:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know if you've heard already, but literature could be back in contention to return to the starting lineup against Bodo Glimt. Sky Sports are reporting that both he and Harry Maguire were back in training on Wednesday, but Ruben Amram said Harry Maguire needs more time before being available.
00:04:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
but he said it is press conference. Martinez didn't stop for much for much time with the injury. It's a different situation with Harry. We need them both, but they are in a different situation. They're both training. Harry will be on the pitch soon. And this is basically Amorim saying that potentially this could be literature.
00:05:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Martinez coming back into the lineup now. Okay, I might've got ahead of myself by saying he might be starting the game, but he certainly might be within that squad, which is good to hear. you know I think we're better we're a better team with Martinez. We are more defensively solid.
00:05:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that can only be a good thing. I mean, looking at Bodo Glimp, they're sort of topping the Norwegian leagues, I believe, when they're when they're coming into this, whereas United are sitting 12th. Looking at sort of how Bodo Glimp play in their last few games, they seem to play this 4-3-3 system.
00:05:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is going to be a really interesting time to see how this 3-4-3 would probably work out and who plays there. You know, is it a case of, you know, is Ugata going to get a start or is Casimir going to start in that midfield? Who starts as your sort of progressive midfielders? You know, Fernandez, we know, is going to start, but who's going to start alongside him? Is it going to be Rashford? Is it going to be Garnaccio? Who's going to be up top? Is it going to be Heulen? Will he get a start up top? It's all very interesting to see how it will work out.
00:06:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think in the basis of it, you know there needs to be this progress made. And I think this is the perfect opportunity. The 4-3-3 is very potent. Lots of teams use it. It's very famous for being very quick, very fluid. And it can be you can you can easily be overrun with a 4-3-3.
00:06:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
especially if you've got the middle three, the middle bank of midfielders who are, you know, box to boxes, you might have one dropping back just to try and provide that cover. But if they're all on a rotation, they are all really powerful in terms of going forward. So that midfield is going to have to work hard in stopping that, breaking up the play where possible. And that's where you could use someone like a Casimiro or like an Agate that can try and make those tackles stop the play in the midfield before it develops into anything else. That being said, a 4-3-3,
00:07:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
he's very much, you've got two biggers and a striker. You normally play some quick players up the top there. So we've got to be careful about the long ball over the top. You know, Berdaglin might try that. If they do try it and try the long balls over the top, try and get in behind. Anana's got to be alert. As we know, he's the sweeper keeper. We know what he can do when he's called upon as that sweeper keeper role. So looking at it, I'm hoping that is the case. um i've I've sort of waffled on a little bit, which is, just so Thoroughly not like me, is it? Thoroughly not like me. ah But yeah, i'm I'm sort of hoping that we do see Martinez back in the fray. I'm hoping that this is going to be three points.
00:07:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll have to wait and see, won't we? I hate that line. I hate the wait and see line, but it is what it is. We're at home to Bodo Glimt, by the way, eight o'clock tonight. And yeah, let's see if we can get some three points on the boards in the Europa League. Everton as well on Sunday, get a little bit of a preview of that. But first, let's have a word from our sponsors.

Everton Match Preview

00:08:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ah, yes, Everton. This is a real bottom of the table clash, isn't it? We've had 64 games with Everton heading into Sunday's match, which is off at 1.30 on Sunday at Old Trafford. In that time, we've had 41 wins. Everton have had 10. There's been 13 draws in total. And yeah, looking back at the late, late last results, the last time Everton won against us was at Gooderson Park, 1-0 on the 9th of April 2022. So it's been a while.
00:09:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Everton, with Sean Dyche behind them, it's going to be dangerous. you know We know what Sean Dyche can do. We know he likes to play solidly defensive football. ah But we've seen Everton have been shaky from time to time, and and that shows as it you know falls into fruition.
00:09:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sean Dyche was famous whilst he was Bernie manager with saying Everton don't know how to win a game or don't know how to get it over the line. And it seems like he's struggling with that at the moment. And yeah, coming into it, Everton are 15th with 11 points. That being said, we're only five points ahead of Everton at this stage. So here's me waffling on about Everton and how it's been a bad start. It's been a bad start for us. I don't know if you can tell either.
00:10:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
But coming into this Manchester United 12, 16 points, zero goal difference. You love to see it, of course. We are now six points behind the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal, who are third and fourth, respectively. So in the grand scheme of things, we're not too far behind, but we need a win. We absolutely need a win coming into ah tonight's, or I should say tonight, we're coming into Sunday's game. And having a look at the Everton squad, I mean, Jordan Pickford is going to be the one to really put a thorn in my side, isn't he?
00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've maintained that Jordan Pickford cannot play in Darby's. I've seen him play in the Merseyside Darby. He just seems to let the occasion... Well, you know how some players let the occasion get to them and they sort of go into themselves and they start to recede and they start to make mistakes? Jordan Pickford loves a Darby, but gets too into it and makes a mistake.
00:10:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kind of like how Steven Gerrard got way too into his final appearance against Manchester United and got himself sent off within 30 seconds of being subbed on. Funny as that was, that's an example of someone who got too into the Derby, too into the match before it even got started. I feel Pickford's the same. If we can get under his skin,
00:11:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
It could be three, four, five now. On the flip of the flip of the coin, Pickford's obviously England's number one and he has the ability to just shut out games, keep keep keep the best out and that's what's really, really annoying. um I would love to, you know,
00:11:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
but I would love them to put three or four past Everton but to be honest with you we need to make sure that we're not caught out. Everton's last game by the way was a 0-0 draw against Brentford, Brentford getting a man sent off in that game and they sort of lined up in a 4-2-3-1, kind of what we were familiar with. Jared Brantaway who was a United target over the summer and has been previous, previous sort of occasions, always good to see him. Ashley Young Yeah, I mean, it's nice to see an ex-United player, especially, I believe he's 40 now, isn't he? He's 39. Apologies, Ashley. 39. And I just think as well, this is a drug great chance to get a result past Everton and get three points on the ball. But again, this is a banana skin. We can't be careful enough. And Jai, who's a phenomenal player for them, absolutely phenomenal.
00:12:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah He is a very dangerous player, very dangerous on the wing. And although we didn't score in that last game, he was by far and away Everton's bright spark. And he has been for this season so far. We had to keep him quiet. And 4-2-3-1, the old system of United coming up against Amorim's new system, should be pretty interesting.
00:12:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
i don't i mean It's not a case of I don't know how to call this game. I want to say it's going to be a United victory. I think it's going to be 2-0. but we've got to be careful about Anjai. Dwight McNeil has a good game in him. I think, you know, he has ah he has a good game every sort of three and four, but ah you you can get definitely guarantee that the one match he's going to have that's, you know, absolutely world-class and he's going to score four in is going to be this one. You can just tell. And and I just think sometimes in that midfield there, Dukure and Gay,
00:13:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
They can be slight weaknesses to the team. I feel like you know if you press them enough, you can force an error out of them. I think Tarkovsky and Brantway, it's a solid center back lineup. Again, it's been tough to sort of ah address because you know so they have made mistakes. Both Tarkovsky and Brantway this season that have led to goals as much as any other player. But I think that midfield, the holding midfielders, that is where we could really you know close down and punish.
00:13:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Everton have struggled putting the ball in the back of the net so far. like Much like we have as well. Let's let's not beat around the bush about that one. So in terms of Everton, we know how that feels. Everton have scored 10 goals. United have scored 13. So maybe 2-0 is generous. Maybe I might go 1-0. That's probably the way it's going to go. 1-0 Manchester United.
00:14:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
And looking at the stats as well on the Premier League website, Garnaccio and Dwight McNeil in in the two teams, three goals a piece, Bruno Fernandes on two. Assist wise, you've got Bruno Fernandes, Diallo, Dwight McNeil, all on three assists going into this one. That's just so only showing the top three there.
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
But then the tackles, Maserraoui, 42 tackles. It's a stat because we're top of it. yeah That's the stat that matters, that we're the ones where we are on top. ah yeah Coming into this season though, we've won four, drawn four, lost four in the Premier League, so it's been pretty consistent. We've averaged just over a goal a game, but we've also averaged just over a goal conceded per match. Five clean sheets though this season and we do create chances according to the stats on the Premier League website, 2.42 chances created per match compared to Everton's 1.42. So it's clear to see that this is going to be a tricky tricky match. you know As I've said before, Everton are going to be a bit of a banana skin
00:15:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that's always going to be the case.

Predicted Line-ups and Strategy

00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whether we have the wherewithal to make sure we don't slip up on that banana skin is yet to be seen. I sort of have to decide how I want the United side to line up in in the next couple of matches, but and that's going to be a tricky one. It's a system that You know, the 343 is unfamiliar to me because it's not one I've sort of thought about. I've normally thought of the conventional four at the back. So it's all new to me as well. But I'll try my best to pick out an 11. And I mean, if you heard ah Matt and Dan yesterday talking about who they'd been off, I'd go back and listen to that. That was quite an episode. ah Maguire.
00:15:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
you're so You're still OK with me. A joke from yesterday. Yes, he's on my payroll, Matt, and I have nothing to be ashamed of. Nothing to be ashamed of, though, because I've now got to try and pick a team. And that will be coming after this.

All right, it's the moment you've all been waiting for. Yes, you've heard how they say they got hired, Matt and Dan, by Ineos to keep loan or sell players. Again, go back and watch that episode. Go back and listen to it. Great episode. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. And this is the time where I get to get on Matt's nerves. Are you listening, Matt? I hope you are.
00:16:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is going to be my line-up then for the upcoming game. In goal, of course, Andrea Nana. How can I not put him into the side? He's been by far and away one of our best players of the season. As Matt's rightfully said, kept us in the Ipswich match. That was easy for me to say. Easily kept us in it. Point blank saves. And he was very unlucky not to save the Amari Hutchison goal because it came off the head of Maserawi.
00:17:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
other than that though I think he would have kept the clean sheet so yeah he's more than kept us in the games when it matters so ah deservedly in that lineup and thank goodness that both Danamat kept him in the side I won't say more than that than that go back and listen to it find out who they kept and got rid of obviously in the back three now I I'm basing this on the fact that Lydia won't be starting the game, because I feel like it might be too soon for him to come back. He is a doubt for the game, so he might be starting on the bench. He might not start at all against Bodo Glimt. With that in mind, I think it's going to be a back three of Maserau, Wiedelit and Jonny Evans. Now, obviously Jonny... Jonny's still the Premier League winner of the side. You know, he he won it in Ferguson's last season.
00:18:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's still here and and ah in fairness to him, he's putting in a shift. I can't ah can't lie about that. For someone who originally was signed back on sort of a month deal or a three month deal to help out in being a depth player, now he's being thrust into the first team and trying to be like, look, just remember 10 years ago, you'll be fine. I don't think he's done a bad job. I just think, you know, he's doing the best job that he can and he's it is a struggle. But, you know, I don't see any other option with Lenny Euro still out as well.
00:18:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
he is back in training though so that's really good to see with Licher back in training and possibly you know involved in the matchday squad with Harry Maguire still out he would have made my side maybe in in place of Evans but I think that's probably how the back three will line up Maseraui, Delitt and Johnny Evans.
00:18:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And on the wings then, I think it's going to be pretty similar to what we saw ah in the last game. We're probably going to have Ahmad and Dallow on both wings. I just think they're probably the best options we have right now. I mean, Ahmad down that right hand side was so good. So good.
00:19:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it was an interesting thing that Matt mentioned, might have been last episode, might have been a couple of episodes ago, where it was a case where he didn't really celebrate did hammer him when Diallo scored the goal.
00:19:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was almost like, as Matt said, it wasn't part of that system. It wasn't part of the way that he wants his Manchester United to play. That's why he didn't celebrate. Or more to the point that he knew that perhaps the lead was too easy to come by and maybe we would have lost it. Well, we lost it in the end, so maybe Amber Im's a fortune teller. What can't that man do?
00:19:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just think Diallo, in a rich vein of form, would be silly to bench him. I think he has to start the game. And I think Diallo, on the left, on the yeah right-hand side, no, no, he's left-hand side. I was right. As I've said before, I think he does have his stronger football on the right-hand side. I think this is a different system now.
00:20:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
As we've mentioned before, it's a case of Amorim likes to play with the inverted ah wingers. So if they're on the right-hand side, they're stronger on their left foot, so they'll be able to cut in or at least be able to make the play sooner rather than have to shift feet or sort out their feet in any way which way they want. And then we come to the sort of heart of the midfield. I think Agate might start. I think Casimir has been OK.
00:20:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
but I think he struggled to keep up with the pace that the Amurim wants to bring into the side and I think Ugarte with the stereotype of him being younger you would think he has more legs in him to to keep up to make sure he's running for the full 90 minutes and you know, I want to give Agate the chances. And that might be totally biased in in in how I think, but I genuinely think some players hit the ground running and some of them need some time. And I think Agate is one of those that just needs a bit of time. He showed some promise. He showed some good games. And as a destroyer, as someone who could win the ball back and just facilitate the play, maybe a short pass to the side or maybe just a short pass forward or maybe even to give it to the center backs to them to hoof it off the field.
00:21:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he's OK at that. So I think we'll give Agate time. I'm willing to give him time. I don't know about you at home or wherever you are listening to this. We'll have to wait and see. Who pairs up with him? Well, with Manu still out, I think Ericsson has been solid. I just think, just like with Casamiro and just like with Johnny Evans, I think they're veterans of the game. And that I was trying to find the nice way of putting that one. They are veterans of the game. and when you're relying on veterans so often, it's it's ah in my view, it's fine to have one veteran. That veteran's normally the captain or normally the the one of the fans get behind. you know I think Rooney was was one of the veterans in a side of you know the the mid-2010s, I should say, that you sort of thought, you're not the player you once were. We get that but the fact that you're here is great, we love you, and you're still putting in a shift for us, so we're happy. I think Ericsson, I think Casimiro, and I think Johnny Evans are all of those types of players, but I think that's too many players. I think January's gonna be really important for Reuben to make sure we keep the side refreshed. If there's one thing we haven't really really been able to do in this United side, is be able to refresh the squad, and make sure, and make that cutting edge decision, and make that cutthroat decision to say no,
00:22:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think you're done here, you need to move on. Such as the Ferguson era, who seemed to know exactly when a player should leave. 95% of the time knew exactly when a player should leave. I think Amorim has to come in with no favourites as well. We'll get onto that in a second. So I think Agate and Ericsson holding into that midfield. Front three then. I think Fernandez maybe starts a little bit narrower.
00:22:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think he'd be sort of an advanced playmaker, able to try and create those chances. And then on the wing, I just didn't think Garnett Cho had belief in himself. And as much as I sort of think, I am looking, I'm gonna, you're watching this live now, you're listening to this live as I try and look at other winger options. I can't see any. And I'm sure ah Matt and Dan are thrilled to hear that I'm probably gonna put Rashford on the wing. Now hit hear me out.
00:23:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hear me out. Steady. I think he'll be okay. And I think Garnaccio will come on to replace him. But I think I've got to stop playing favourites at some point. We all know I like Marcus Rafford. We all know I'm living yesteryear and still remember his Europa League debuts and European debuts and England debuts and Premier League debuts and League Cup debuts. He scored at all of them.
00:23:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm still in that era and I have to snap out of it, but I think Garnaccio would probably be on the bench. I think this is a case of Amram has to come in and say, look, maybe you didn't have the best game last time out. I have to change things.
00:24:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Rashford starts on the wing. He has pulled off Rashford in the game, so it's not like he's and untouchable, which is good. That's a good thing to see. No one's above the club, which is amazing. So in that case, I think Hoyland starts up top. I think he has to. He's a promising player. He's still in his early 20s.
00:24:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah The fact that he's in his early 20s maybe hasn't reached his peak yet but there's a there's a footballer in there and you can tell that and I just really want him, I i back oil him to to you know get the goals on there. He struggled with injuries, would put a massive smile on my face and I'm sure he's to see him on the score sheet.
