New Manager's Impact on Man United

00:00:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm in the blue corner today, and then in the red corner, I'm joined by Oliver and Niall from Daily Manchester United. How you both doing, lads?
00:00:37
OllieP
Doing well, doing well. Could hear from you.
00:00:39
Niall
Yeah, delighted. Delighted to be on. Looking forward to it.
00:00:42
OllieP
Yeah, I'm excited. Very excited.
00:00:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
It should be a very good episode. This, I think of all the various storylines coming into it. Most notably, of course, the new man in the dugout for the first time for United. So I'll ask you guys a bit about that. And then obviously I'll let you come back and return the favor before we have a bit of a bit of a prediction. So I think it's a wrap to show up, but like I say, we'll go straight in. Then the biggest talking point, obviously you've got a new man in the dugout.
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
his first game in charge is going to be a fairly big shift in terms of style of play, I imagine. So I'll ask you first, Niall, sort of, are we expecting him to go straight in with the sort of 3-4-3 rude memory? Or do you reckon he'll stick to something a bit more close to home for the first game?
00:01:26
Niall
I think he's going to go straight in and and try and get is his philosophy embedded into these players as as quickly as possible. And and we'll see a 3-4-3. Yeah, the the magic of a new manager has kind of taken over me over the past couple of days. I'm really looking forward to seeing it at the weekend. But I'm quite aware that that dream could be crushed as well at the weekend. So we'll see how we go. But yeah, i've I've said it multiple times over the past couple of weeks where We said similar things about Tinhag when he came in about this being this say very successful manager and in a different league and building a side and being successful in Europe and then you know expecting big things when we come to United. So hopefully this time is different and and I sense that it is different.

Manchester United's Historical Struggles

00:02:11
Niall
I feel like he won't be kind of letting the players away with as much as as what was going on under Tinhag and under different various managers. And I am excited about our profile of players with that system. So yeah, all all positive thoughts for once from a United perspective going into the weekend.
00:02:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it must be a nice feeling for you guys. You've not had that sort of positivity cut into games very often in the last decade or so already, have you?
00:02:31
OllieP
I'd say it's been a turbulent.
00:02:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. So what do you think, Ollie, then? How are you? Do you think there's been enough time to sort of prepare for the such a big style change of play? Or do you think there's going to be some players that may struggle, where it could be a bit of a benefit for us on Sunday?
00:02:51
OllieP
It's going to take time, isn't it? It's all pretty new. And if we are going for a different style of play, then it's going to take a long time for to embed into these players. It's going to take months. We've got a few injury, well, past injuries that are coming back on the left side.
00:03:04
OllieP
We've got my last series coming back and sure, which is weird. They've come back at exactly the same time. It's very odd.
00:03:09
Niall
Yeah.
00:03:10
OllieP
I don't know what these guys have been up to, but it's it's good. It's good reinforcement. So so maybe you will, you probably will go in with this style um um and just give it a test run because we got to lose really. yes we're sitting 13 for the minute so just go in there get this physical philosophy embedded and hopefully it's going to come to fruition fingers crossed
00:03:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we'll see how it goes out that we sort of, we sort of been previewing it ourselves, but leading up to this where we see that we saw, there's been a bit of a debate between our guys is that some of us were a bit negative ah ah where we thinking of new manager balance. Here we go. He's going to come in. He's want to set the ground run and sort of team down the bottom of the table. And then where am I? I had that view, but I sort of changed my mind because of the start of play

Bruno Fernandez in the New 3-4-3 System

00:03:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
really. And I asked you, Niall sort of,
00:03:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
to talk about Bruno Fernandez because he's had a bit of a resurgence since Van Nistreoy was in the interim but he stands out for me as the player whose role doesn't really suit a 3-4-3 system because he's not in the three and he's not really a two in midfield sort of player I don't think anyway not that I watch Man United every week so where do you sort of think he's not seeing because he is the key man really isn't he?
00:04:22
Niall
Yeah, it's it's an interesting one. We've spoken a lot about kind of front three and the two different kind of shapes you can go with. So obviously, you have the lone striker, but then you'll have two in behind. And whether those two play quite narrow or whether they're quite wide, I think it's it's a different profile of player that will fit into either of them. So you could imagine maybe a Rashford and an Ahmad in behind a Hoyland or a mountain, a Bruno in behind, which are two different types of profile players. So I think he will play in that position. I'm just interested to see how it's going to work. And I think it'll be if he is going to play, we're going to have to rely heavily on on the wing backs in those situations to get quite high and provide that with because.
00:05:02
Niall
He likes to drop in. He'll probably drop in beside the two at times and try and look for those long diagonals and balls in behind as well. So it's going to take a bit of but of time to adapt, I think. i'm I'm quite happy, though, that there's a manager coming in with this type of structure because Over the past couple of years, it's been very difficult.
00:05:21
Niall
Ollie, I think we've been discussing it a lot, but its very hard to put your finger on a style of play and and a structure that United have.
00:05:23
OllieP
I don't know.
00:05:27
Niall
And Bruno is a fabulous player and very talented, but he just kind of pops up everywhere around the pitch and starts spraying 50, 60-yard passes when maybe it's not what you need at the time.
00:05:35
OllieP
I can't think.
00:05:37
Niall
So and he'll have to he'll have to adapt to that new structure as
00:05:38
OllieP
No.
00:05:41
Niall
um And and i'm I'm looking forward to seeing how he fits into it.

Ipswich's Potential Advantage

00:05:44
Niall
But yeah, great point. i mean He didn't start the season too well in terms of stats and was getting into a lot of good positions, but just couldn't seem to finish it off. And yeah, he's, he's popped up with a few goals over the past couple of weeks from United and also from a Portugal point of view. So yeah, let's see how he fits in at the weekend.
00:06:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think that's sort of the key man in attack really. The other thing I sort of looked at from the optimistic Ipswich point of view is obviously the quite important part of a 3-4-3 formation is having your three solid centre backs whereas it's not the strongest position really for your United is it Oli?
00:06:24
OllieP
Yeah, the minute it's, yeah, we've been ropey at the back.
00:06:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think the three is going to be?
00:06:28
OllieP
It's, there's been times where it's been quite questionable, like the players form. No one's really stood out. Martinez, he's's every time he's played each season, he's he looked amazing, but he's, he's looked rocky this season, but I think it's just, it's just a transition of everything, isn't it?
00:06:42
OllieP
It's just a different style of play. Maybe he's just not feeling that confident at the moment, but yeah, I think he'll come good. Delict was a bit ropey as well as a few like games where he just looked terrible.
00:06:52
OllieP
He just looked weak and it looked like, Is this guy decent silent or not? But I think it's just getting used everyone getting used to each other because we have we've constantly changed at the back and that's been our problem. No one's got used to playing with each other. It's not like Liverpool. We're playing with the same players each week. We're constantly changing through injuries like our defense. Our defense just there's always someone out every other week. It was someone that was out injured and it just cost us dearly every game. So hopefully we're just getting our best structure and getting used to playing with each other.
00:07:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Okay. So then what about the sort of wingback roles then as the other thing? Cause I was thinking, you mentioned Malassia and Shaw coming back.
00:07:26
Niall
Mm.
00:07:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know if that's fit and ready to start for this game.
00:07:29
OllieP
Yeah.
00:07:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Cause again, fullback's an area you're fairly light in.
00:07:32
OllieP
That's it.
00:07:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Are we, is it likely to see wingers sort of drop into that role maybe as as an option? And then especially these sort of games, like you say, you expect them this and evident next week that teams down the bottom that you probably are expected to go and get results in.
00:07:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you reckon it'll be that sort of heavy attack and lineup or will we just, or will you just force those sort of two only two fit full backs you've got into the two positions?
00:07:57
OllieP
I think bringing back in, if they're ready to play, man, ah I want to see Molassia playing again. It's because I'm obviously sure he's like injury prone as well. So it'd be good to see him get some games, get, let him play 90 minutes as well and see if he is up to the task.
00:08:10
OllieP
Cause obviously it is. It's a full back. It's one of the most difficult positions. You got to be super athletic and is he going to be able to, and I dunno, meet the demands of Amorim when he comes in.
00:08:16
Niall
Mm hmm.
00:08:21
OllieP
So don I want to see him play. I want to see him play in full games.
00:08:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
You feel the same now?
00:08:29
Niall
Yeah, it's got a bit carried away there with a clip that was posted by United a couple of days ago of their their training session, and it was interesting to see the players that he had playing in those positions. Obviously, some of them are way on international duty, but he had Antony right wing back, and he had Melasia left wing back, which saw left of the back three. and So yeah, I don't really know what their fitness is like, but I'm assuming Mizrahi will probably come back and play in maybe the left wing back role.
00:08:56
Niall
he's been He's been probably our best player of this season, and which says which says an awful lot.
00:08:58
OllieP
Yeah, stand out. It's been brilliant.
00:09:01
Niall
And then, you know, Badallo is suited to the to right wing back as well. but If you want to go for more attack and you could drop wingers back in there, you know, if you are going against a team that are in the and in the bottom half of the table, like United, you can probably put an arm out on the right wing and really go for it. But yeah, i'm ah ah I think there's a lot of flexibility in in the people you can put in those roles. So I'm interested to see what he'll do with with the players he has in his first game.
00:09:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think it's interesting to

Expectations from the New Manager

00:09:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
see because you're at the point now really where you have to start climbing the table sooner rather than later after you have to start.
00:09:34
OllieP
What's that?
00:09:36
Niall
That's the plan, yeah.
00:09:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, so when this story came in and steady the ship, let's say first two games for hammering the team in 17th and the team in 16th objectively looking at the table that this sort of game, you'd like to think you come in and get six points on the board and do that.
00:09:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously I hope he doesn't, but you're sure that's, all yeah.
00:09:54
OllieP
It's huge. He's got to get the ground running straight away. There's going to be a lot of pressure on him. It's a completely different league as well. It's all well and good, saying how good he's been in Portugal. But it's a different pace game. It's a different's different game of football now.
00:10:04
Niall
Exactly.
00:10:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, exactly. I think the same thing was, I feel like from an outside look at it, I do get a bit of a different feeling about Amorim, but then I'm pretty sure I probably probably would have sat here and told you the same thing about Tenhar a couple of years ago.
00:10:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So we've we've all we've, yeah.
00:10:19
Niall
I think that's the horrible thing about it, yeah. it's ah he looks He looks the part, which is which is half the battle, and you're like, wow, he'll look great on the touchline, but sure, that's not going to win you matches, so we'll see.
00:10:24
OllieP
He does, doesn't he?
00:10:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:25
OllieP
Yeah.
00:10:30
OllieP
I think he seems like he's liked.
00:10:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:33
OllieP
It seems like they're all very excited about him coming in. So I'm guessing we've got those porte Portuguese contingent there, isn't there?
00:10:35
Niall
Yeah.
00:10:38
OllieP
So I'm going to know him really well.
00:10:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:40
OllieP
And I think i think ah Bruno knew he was coming in. I've got a feeling he knew it. And he probably thought, right, he's going to make me the main man again. And it he's going to reinvigorate him get to the standards that he was before.
00:10:52
OllieP
So hopefully it's all going to work out, man. Really, I'm feeling positive about it. He seems more charismatic than 10 hag.
00:10:56
Niall
Yeah.
00:10:57
OllieP
I think that was one of his downfalls as well. Like his interviews and he just, I don't know, it was just something like lacking ah with 10 hag when he used to do his interviews. So hopefully this guy's going to come in, stamp his authority down and ah ah I don't know, just get this team back to where we need to be.
00:11:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he seemed to struggle with the media, didn't he, 10 Harker, really, which, yeah.
00:11:14
OllieP
Very, said the wrong things all the time. It was, wasn't good. Wasn't good at all.
00:11:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
He liked him.
00:11:18
OllieP
I didn't feel your confidence.
00:11:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, yeah, he's he seemed to, he used to moan about them a lot, didn't he? They're sort of, when you do a role like you, like somewhere, like Man United, you're going to have the press on your back a lot of the time, particularly when
00:11:25
OllieP
yeah and
00:11:30
OllieP
Yeah. Yeah.

Ipswich's Morale and Strategy

00:11:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
you're not performing.
00:11:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he seemed to always not like that part of the job, where you almost got to embrace it in a way, don't you?
00:11:35
OllieP
Hmm.
00:11:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just have a laugh and a joke of him, like sort of Guardiola and Klopp do.
00:11:40
OllieP
Yeah. That's it.
00:11:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's top levels, but say yeah.
00:11:42
OllieP
Yeah. He likes charisma, I think, and it wasn't good. Good for him.
00:11:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we'll see how it goes. I keep saying now, obviously, I'm trying to take the bias out of it. Well, that's the question as well. I was trying to say, come to Portland where I wouldn't expect a result, but if we get the result the other way around, it'll only be four points behind you.
00:12:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
If you told us that at the start of the season, it'll only be a few points off Miami United.
00:12:01
Niall
yeah
00:12:01
OllieP
Yeah, mate.
00:12:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll be doing really well.
00:12:05
OllieP
It's crazy how far down the table we are. I keep forgetting. It's just like, wow.
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:09
OllieP
We're coming up Christmas now as well. So it's going to be a huge December. Got an absolute barrage of games through that time. So hopefully it's when he's going to nail it.
00:12:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:12:15
Niall
Yeah, the league's really, the league is so weird this year though, like everyone's dropping points. Like even, even United are still in with the top five, top six hopes, which are like, we should be well out of sight at this stage, but yeah, a couple of victories, Nottingham Forest in the top four, are they at the
00:12:20
OllieP
Yeah.
00:12:24
OllieP
Yeah.
00:12:29
Niall
Yeah, it's, it's a very compact table apart from Liverpool.
00:12:29
OllieP
yeah
00:12:32
OllieP
It is. It's kind of like it was a two horse race.
00:12:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:12:34
OllieP
We've seen Liverpool and now it's, that was kind of a one horse race now just there.
00:12:37
Niall
Yeah, exactly.
00:12:38
OllieP
It seems Liverpool, the only one with any sort of, uh, uh, what's it called continuity while they play it.
00:12:39
Niall
Yeah.
00:12:42
Niall
Consistency, I suppose. Yeah.
00:12:43
OllieP
And so it's it's wild.
00:12:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:12:44
OllieP
It's gone crazy.
00:12:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's all tightly packed. And so we were we were sitting here all depressed a couple of weeks ago down. We didn't get that win at Leicester. We were already five points out, so five points off the relegation zone.
00:12:53
OllieP
Yeah.
00:12:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, like if we'd won that and cut the gap right down, like at least we didn't lose. That would have been eight points horrible. And then fast forward two more games.
00:13:00
OllieP
yeah
00:13:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're outside the bottom three again. And we have a chance to overtake Leicester this weekend if we can get a result and Chelsea beat them.
00:13:07
OllieP
Yeah.
00:13:07
Niall
Yeah.
00:13:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's all twisted and turn them. But so we keep saying this.
00:13:10
OllieP
Wide open at the minute, mate.
00:13:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, exactly. So I keep saying that there's seems to be some similarities between ten hogs and hammering in terms of the feeling and around the outsides but I'm just hoping that it goes like ten hogs first away game where that was was that 4-0 at Brentford so same sort of game that really team down the bottom and promoted team down the bottom of the table we'd be expecting something from so I hope it goes a similar way but
00:13:25
OllieP
Yeah, we got battered, got battered, didn't we? ah Yeah.
00:13:27
Niall
Yeah.
00:13:30
OllieP
Yeah.
00:13:35
OllieP
See, it seems to show up when they play us. That's it. It's their big game, isn't it? It's their biggest game of the season when they play us.
00:13:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:13:41
OllieP
It's like, beating Man United, they all seem to like like really show up. And then they'll get beat by like a lesser team the week after.
00:13:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it'll be interesting, won't it? But I think I've thrown enough questions at you now. I think I'll let you return the favor once we've had a quick word from one of our sponsors.
00:14:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
We are back for the second part of today's crossover, looking ahead to the half past four kickoff on Sunday, Ipswich Town against Manchester United. So lads, I've thrown a fair few questions at you in that first part there, obviously some big talking points to go into. So it was only fair I let you sort of come back to me now that we, how you want to quiz me and on anything from the Ipswich side of things going into Sunday.
00:14:53
Niall
Yeah, I have a bit of a... I suppose I was basically... a spectator at your big win there a couple of weeks ago at at Spurs. I was at the match. I mean, talk to me about the emotions from that. We were walking back to the tube and all I could hear was Liam de Lapo, Le-Ole ringing at my ears for about four hours after it. like So, I mean, what an unbelievable victory. I'm concerned to think going in that user on a high coming into this United game, giant killers and all that. like So, yeah, talk to me about the emotions after that game, I suppose.
00:15:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, it's it's unbelievable, so it's... Obviously the first, it's been 22 years in the making.
00:15:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
We just kept sort of getting so close and not holding over the line, especially sort of literally the week before leading 1-0 until, what was it, in the 95th minute or something when Jordan and I were equalised that coming so close.
00:15:47
Niall
Yeah, it's rough.
00:15:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:15:49
OllieP
Hmm.
00:15:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like every week you didn't get it and you're watching other teams win, it then became so much more important.
00:15:50
OllieP
Hmm.
00:15:53
OllieP
Hmm.
00:15:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
You go and get it eventually. And it's just fantastic to finally get over the line. Cause we're all sitting there sort of biting our nails, getting worried when it went to two, one, because we'd seen what happened at Brentford when we were two in the lap, literally two weeks before that.
00:16:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we went on to lose.
00:16:10
Niall
Yeah.
00:16:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then obviously, like I said, the Leicester game the week before it was sort of inevitable sentence. The equalizer was coming when. it went to 2-1 but to get over the line and in such a big game as well really that we were literally saying after that Leicester game on our pod we we sat there and go well that's it we had we had that run of four games we said these wins now it's like we look at our next few games if we could hit December and not get a win on the board unless we go and shock somebody and that's exactly what we did yeah
00:16:30
OllieP
Hmm.
00:16:36
OllieP
Yeah. It's worried, it isn't it? Yeah. Is it more of a relief just to get in that first word then? Just, uh, you sort of just breathe a little bit easier.
00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think it became more like that as the weeks went on, like, you knew it was going to be an incredible feeling when it came, but when it when it was, especially with walls having one on Saturday to then be like, knowing that if we didn't win that game, that we'd go into the third international break, being the only team to not get a win on the board and teams gain points again, that it felt like it book suddenly became a must win, whereas beforehand, it would have been a bit more of a free hit.
00:16:50
OllieP
Hmm.
00:16:52
OllieP
Yeah.
00:16:56
Niall
Mm.
00:16:58
OllieP
Hmm.
00:17:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a fantastic feeling as well, like I said, twenty two years in the make It's the first time in my lifetime we've won a Premier League game.
00:17:15
OllieP
Yeah, it's a long time.
00:17:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
um say they see i was I was born two months after we were relegated.
00:17:18
OllieP
Hmm.
00:17:22
OllieP
Oh, really?
00:17:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's the first time I've experienced it in my life so the other lads can compare it back to the last season and how I felt before.
00:17:25
OllieP
Yeah.
00:17:31
OllieP
yeah
00:17:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's the first time for me so it's brilliant really and just really annoying there was an innocent international break straight after it because we really want to get that first one. We keep saying we'll get the first one then we might go on a run and kick on and got the first one and then we've had two weeks off.
00:17:46
OllieP
That's it.
00:17:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's not ideal really.
00:17:47
OllieP
It can be detrimental kind of really ah ah an international break when you the mood's good, then all the players sort of separate and then it's kind of like like you say, you lose momentum.
00:17:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:56
OllieP
That's the only scary thing.
00:17:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:57
OllieP
It's good if you're losing at the time, I guess. Have a little breather, but if you're winning, you don't want to stop.
00:17:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, I see the last one. The last one couldn't have been more perfectly timed. but It was just after we went to West Ham and got actually trounced in the most embarrassing performance of the season.
00:18:07
OllieP
Yeah.
00:18:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're going to say, West Downer, who haven't looked good in a single game all season, put four past us.
00:18:13
OllieP
Hmm.
00:18:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was the perfect time for international break that you can just forget about that. Forget about football for a week or so. Watch some glorified friendlies and come back and then...
00:18:22
OllieP
yeah take stock yeah it
00:18:22
Niall
It's so funny though, like people people talking about like football fans are just brilliant.
00:18:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:27
Niall
this like it's awful It's awful going into the an international break on on a loss because the morale is so low.
00:18:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:33
Niall
And then if you win, it's like, oh, we were going to go on a run. You can't win or can't lose either way.
00:18:38
OllieP
can be delusional sometimes got it
00:18:41
Niall
like It's just, whatever way you frame it in your head, you're actually going to be fine.
00:18:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:18:47
Niall
i What about this lame lap fell? I mean, he's probably going to get lainty and idle now after his goal against.
00:18:52
OllieP
yeah
00:18:53
Niall
But what a start to the season.
00:18:53
OllieP
but good
00:18:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:18:54
Niall
like I mean, incredible player.
00:18:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I don't, I mean, I don't think we really knew how good he was going to be really, but it sort of picked him up, but it was one of them that
00:19:03
Niall
yeah
00:19:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah ah yeah it has been the recruitment strategy, particularly since our new owners came in three or four years ago now that the the idea has been recruit from the English Academy system and sort of whether that's someone who's been loaned out and then or left

Challenges in Retaining Talent

00:19:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
permanently and then come back through like it's not we know we don't really go and recruit from abroad as sort of take players from the league below or it's go and get these talented young players in and I say Davis wasn't getting the look in at Leeds but he's impressed on loan right we'll go and we'll go and give him a go and So he was very rehearsed, wasn't getting much, he wasn't getting any game time at Leicester. So we took him on loan, then signed him permanently when that worked out. So he'd come in through a city and it was obvious they wanted to move him on like they usually do with a flog or their attackers or their academy talents to sort of balance the books. and didn't know Because he hadn't had that much experience at the senior level, really, apart from a few loans. The only time i'd so he went to Stoke for a little while, I went to uni up around there and
00:20:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
didn't really, so I watched him a couple of times when he was at Stoke and didn't really think anything of him, so that's all I really had to go off.
00:20:07
OllieP
never stood out. Yeah, that's it. You just never know could be going to form like the guests of the Premier League.
00:20:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, yeah, exactly.
00:20:13
OllieP
It's like how they get, how well they're going to do. You just never know if they're going to take that, uh, go to the next level, but obviously he hasn't stepped up as needs looked incredible.
00:20:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so, yeah.
00:20:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, bri he took it straight away, really, isn't he?
00:20:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that, like I said, we weren't really sure, because we hadn't seen anything overly impressive, but We know enough about the way we do our transfers, that we don't have many that go wrong.
00:20:25
OllieP
Hmm.
00:20:36
OllieP
Hmm.
00:20:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's there's some good data involved, I assume, the way they like to do it and get the right players in. And when it really started to click for us, and we were sort of chatting about it, is when we realized that pretty much every city fan that was reacting to the transfer was saying, why have we got rid of him?
00:20:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
That we should have kept him.
00:20:54
OllieP
Hmm.
00:20:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
He could have been good, he could have been good backup, especially with Alvarez looking like he's going to leave.
00:20:57
Niall
Yeah.
00:20:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's something we're trying to afford. for a club who never usually promotes their talents unless they are top, and top, top, top, like sort of Foden, Lewis, people like that that can go straight into the team that good and play that if their fans are thinking he's on, he was on that level that he could have gone straight in the team and started working his way in, we then thought we might be on to a winner and then been unbelievable that how he's come in, just how physical he is as well that we didn't expect really that he's like, he's just bullies.
00:21:07
OllieP
Yeah.
00:21:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like he went up against Romero and Dragison. in that Spurs game, two very aggressive centre-halves.
00:21:29
Niall
Yeah.
00:21:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he'd just go back to him and more, all game, they couldn't handle him. He's been absolutely brilliant. I can't say enough about him, really.
00:21:40
OllieP
Yeah, get a call up soon, international call ups. It could be on the cards.
00:21:44
Niall
nah he's gonna he's gonna he's gonna go for ireland he's definitely he's definitely gonna go nah he's not but i hope i hope he does i mean i i don't know i feel like he's holding out for that england when i was chatting with my friends about this as well who's actually coming in terms of strikers for england like once you go past the wisconsin solanke it's it's the lap and there's no one even near him at the moment as a number nine there's no one else like so unfortunately i think he's going to probably
00:21:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, hopefully.
00:21:46
OllieP
You reckon?
00:21:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:21:55
OllieP
policy Yeah, it will be. That's it. It is, no one.
00:22:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, exactly. yeah
00:22:09
Niall
get up at a game time. Maybe not under Tuchel though. Tuchel might not bother taking a risk on him because Tuchel's one objective is to win the big one for use.
00:22:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:16
OllieP
Yeah.
00:22:16
Niall
So I don't know. We'll see. Maybe and be our dentist from Sweden can come in and bring him into the Irish team.
00:22:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think we'll be, we want to see it at some point.
00:22:26
Niall
But yeah.
00:22:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we're obviously clamoring for Davis as well. Cause England seemed to like calling up no left backs at all rather than
00:22:33
OllieP
he
00:22:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
take a punt on him.
00:22:34
Niall
except
00:22:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And in the end, that Lewis Hall actually played quite well in the game he played, to be fair.
00:22:37
Niall
He was good against Spurs. Yeah.
00:22:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
But even then, like he hadn't had the best start to the season. He was fantastic when they played Arsenal, when he kept Saka quiet. But I've seen a lot of new Arsenal fans complaining about his performances up to that point, whereas Davis had been superb.
00:22:50
Niall
Nice, good player. Very good player. Yeah.
00:22:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we're clamorous. say We haven't had an England call-up since Richard Wright in 2000. So we've got a couple of players that are right on the fringe now.
00:22:59
OllieP
Oh man, blow me!
00:23:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
So they've got a really good chance.
00:23:02
OllieP
Geez, it's time, it's long overdue.
00:23:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, exactly.
00:23:06
Niall
Fair. Yeah, it's funny, they touching on the City Academy stuff, Dilap plays a bit like a young Holland in a way where he's extremely physical. and He's absolutely massive. And then he has a good left foot as well. And then like City leave leaving their talents, these English players, Dilap, you have so not Foden Palmer, obviously, and then that Harwood Bellis fella as well, playing for Southampton, like, you know, obviously made his English, England debut scored, scored in his debut, but like, yeah they seem to get rid of lots of their good kind of young English academy players.
00:23:40
OllieP
I do.
00:23:41
Niall
But I think the point that you mentioned around balancing the books and that clean profit is probably, probably a big part of it considering all the money they have spent in the past.
00:23:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so there seems to be their model, and not that I'm complaining, because we've picked up an unbelievable talent who's breaking records every week when he scores.
00:23:55
Niall
Yeah, exactly.
00:23:56
OllieP
Yeah, numbers.
00:23:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd say he's got more more goals at this age than people than any other English striker. I'm pretty sure that's that that was the start after the Spurs game. I think even the likes of Rooney and Shearer only had five at at his age in the Premier League, and he's got six already.
00:24:11
Niall
Yeah, it's incredible. Yeah. He just needs to get his long throw-ins now, like his dad, and it'd be fine.
00:24:16
OllieP
Yeah.
00:24:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:17
Niall
Yeah.
00:24:17
OllieP
God, they're amazing to watch.
00:24:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so he's just, it's the one thing he lacks, really. he say He's brilliant on the ball. is like
00:24:21
OllieP
Just can't do a throw in.
00:24:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's an unbelievable player, let's say.
00:24:24
Niall
He needs to run in after it, like after he takes the throw in.
00:24:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
He probably could do that.
00:24:26
Niall
Yeah. Add that to his game.
00:24:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
I could say the amount of times he makes chances, he just picks a ball up on the halfway line, beats four players, and let's say his goal against Fulham was that.
00:24:32
Niall
Yeah.
00:24:35
OllieP
Hmm.
00:24:35
Niall
Yeah, it's incredible.
00:24:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's done the same thing against Brighton a week later and hit the post. He's got that in a locker. He can also bully centre backs out of the way. Brilliant at finishing. A week later, he's got an unbelievable if he says injury for free he's gonna have a fantastic career ahead of him and we've just got to hope it's at Ipswich for as long as possible because we get relegated you can guarantee he's the first name out the door and ah of how how he's been performing
00:24:37
OllieP
Hmm.
00:24:55
Niall
Mm hmm.
00:24:58
OllieP
Yeah, Yeah, that's it. It's hard to keep hold of him anyway if you guys do stay up. There's going to be a lot of

Match Predictions & Fan Confidence

00:25:03
OllieP
interest, isn't there? So tricky. Where do you see yourselves finishing at the end of the season? What are you feeling?
00:25:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah especially if he keeps going the way he's going so yeah well we'll see we'll have to see how the season goes really we it's it's fairly essential i think that we need to stay up or
00:25:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
the worry is the whole project sort of falls apart then because McKenna will be a Premier League manager next season unless we give him stupid amounts of money in the championship because he he's too good to drop back down really.
00:25:29
OllieP
Yeah.
00:25:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like I said the likes of Dalat will go, Davis he's just signed a new contract so we'd get a good money for him but again he'd get poached wouldn't he? We've got a lot of talent there that would get stolen and it feels like the whole project you don't want the project to be years of work to come up and go back down in one year and then
00:25:46
OllieP
Yeah, I waste.
00:25:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
repeat the process where you then sit in the championship for 15 years and you don't want to won a done season as fun as it would be, especially getting some bigger results like going to Spurs and winning.
00:25:50
OllieP
Hmm.
00:25:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And and if we say if we can get one this weekend, but you you'd get their memories, but you don't eat the do you you want to stay up and then try and build further and establish yourself like some of the other teams have, like Brentford, for example, that come up out of the blue and know where they are now.
00:26:09
OllieP
I say, yeah, you wanna stay?
00:26:11
Niall
Mm hmm. Yeah.
00:26:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's that's that's the ultimate goal because so the what that's the worry really, that we got to do is say week week by week, we keep saying, even if it's only a point like it is at the moment, if week but if every week we can come out and go, we're not at the bottom three, slowly those fixes are going to tick by until eventually we're right at the end of the year and we're hanging on there by a thread.
00:26:26
OllieP
Yeah.
00:26:32
OllieP
Just survival's key at the moment, isn't it?
00:26:34
Niall
It's a good plan.
00:26:34
OllieP
and
00:26:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:35
OllieP
Yeah, that's exciting.
00:26:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll see what happens.
00:26:37
OllieP
So should you go for results, what we think it's going to be on Sunday?
00:26:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. oh Yeah.
00:26:43
OllieP
Can we go for everyone?
00:26:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that'd be a good way to do it, but we better chuck in a word from one of our sponsors first.
00:27:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right, and we are back for the final part of today's crossover Friday with me and the lads from Daily Man United. So we'll go a bit from predictions-based stuff. And before I get into your scores, lads, I'm going to ask you a tough question, because as we mentioned a few times now, there's a new manager coming in whose system you've not seen before. Can you give me a rough estimate of the sort of predicted lineup in this new setup? Because I'm a bit stumped. I think it's going to play. And obviously, you know Man United better than I do.
00:27:44
Niall
Okay.
00:27:44
OllieP
I think, yeah.
00:27:44
Niall
Let's go. We'll give it a go then. Right.
00:27:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:47
Niall
okay. We'll go to Nana back three. I am going to go for, it's very hard to know about the fitness of the two left backs. Actually, I'm going to go for, uh, delect, delect Johnny Evans and Martinez back three Mazzrari and Dallow wing backs.
00:28:07
Niall
Meno, Casa Mero, in midfield, Mount Bruno, and Highland.
00:28:15
OllieP
Yeah, pretty similar. I probably put your guard there. I think you got it's going to play over Mayno. Maybe still question the fitness of Mayno at the moment, maybe not start him. But yeah, pretty much the same. I'd say you got there. Hoyland's going to play definitely. but yeah, pretty much the same really just that you got change.
00:28:32
Niall
You think Rashford or Ahmad's going to play? Or Garnaccio?
00:28:34
OllieP
I think, I think he's going to start Rashford. I got a feeling.
00:28:38
Niall
And where?
00:28:38
OllieP
I think on the, on the right, he's going to put on the right.
00:28:42
Niall
Okay, with Bruno, Rashford and Bruno behind Hoyland.
00:28:44
OllieP
Yeah.
00:28:46
Niall
Okay. Is Gurnachio gonna play? No.
00:28:49
OllieP
Oh, I don't know. It's so tricky, isn't it?
00:28:52
Niall
Yeah, I put a lot of my failures in mind, that's the only thing, yeah.
00:28:52
OllieP
Because this new system. Yeah.
00:28:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:28:56
OllieP
Because this new system is hard to know where who's going to go where, but I think Rashford is going to start.
00:28:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so it's a tough question when you've not seen it before, but be interesting.
00:29:00
OllieP
Yeah. That's it.
00:29:01
Niall
Yeah.
00:29:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's say that it's a benefit that you can go either way with it really, because you could like you say, you could start with Bruno and mountain in there.
00:29:05
OllieP
Hmm.
00:29:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then we have the better of the first half. He might well then change it up, put Rashford and Garnapcho on and attack the wings all game that we interesting to see really, because we sort of, we set up with our, our 4-2-3-1 sort of set up that we normally do, although
00:29:14
OllieP
Yeah. Mm.
00:29:16
Niall
Yeah. totally ring
00:29:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
we sort of did a hybrid five back against Spurs to get the results of with Ben Johnson playing right mid when we had the ball and slotting it right back when we didn't or when we were defending.
00:29:26
Niall
Yeah.
00:29:30
Niall
yeah
00:29:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I've been intrigued to see if we go for that again, especially with being a similar sort of game really than Spurs. I'd say another sort of big six team who you expect to be on top really.
00:29:44
Niall
Oh, we're only a top 12 team.
00:29:46
OllieP
yeah we're big 13 with the top out of 13 man yeah that's it
00:29:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
he
00:29:47
Niall
You take it easy. You take it easy on us. Yeah. We're just, you know, we're in the top 13.
00:29:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
and yeah you look at the that's the funny thing about If you look at the table objectively and take the names away, you'd be thinking 13th at home is the sort of game we need to be getting a win in if we want to stay up, but don't you remember who you're from?
00:30:05
Niall
Definitely. If Tenhag was still here, I would be very concerned.
00:30:08
OllieP
I would as well, yeah.
00:30:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I know.
00:30:10
OllieP
Hopefully, we're going to get that boost, that boost. new matter Like you say, new manager boost.
00:30:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah.
00:30:13
OllieP
Everyone's got to fight for their place now, haven't they, really? They've got to impress the manager. So that'll last for a few weeks, and then we'll see how it goes.
00:30:17
Niall
Yeah.
00:30:20
OllieP
but
00:30:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:30:22
OllieP
Yeah, it's going to be exciting, man.
00:30:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:30:23
OllieP
I am really excited. I want to see what he's going to do this guy. It's been and painful been a painful like couple of years, really, on and off with 10HAG. I didn't hate the guy at all. i Actually, I thought he was just really lucky.
00:30:34
OllieP
What he tried to implement just didn't work with the players that he had, and he had so much. unfortunate it was with injuries all the time. Just wasn't to be for him. And luckily, hopefully, this guy's going to come in, stamp his his mark, and we're going to get into winning ways again, fingers crossed.
00:30:50
OllieP
Hopefully started with a win.
00:30:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:30:51
OllieP
and ge go like Yeah.
00:30:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully not. I'm going to stop sticking on my, I'm sticking on my mindset.
00:30:56
OllieP
Yeah.
00:30:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've changed my mind already once. I'm not changing back. I'm sticking on that. I'd rather play you first game of a new system than down the line.
00:31:04
Niall
Yeah.
00:31:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought I'm scared of new manager bounce, but so I don't, I said, I mean, I said the same thing about Liverpool on the opening day.
00:31:05
OllieP
yeah
00:31:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's the perfect time with a new manager and stuff. And then second half we weren't at the races at all, but for 45 minutes we had them, had them where we wanted them.
00:31:16
OllieP
Yeah.
00:31:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought, and we could have gone and got our results. if we can do that and have had the 10 games experience and to try and drag out over 90, but we might have a chance, but should we wrap up with some score predictions then?
00:31:28
OllieP
Yeah.
00:31:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll go to you first, Niall.
00:31:31
OllieP
Yeah, let's do it.
00:31:34
Niall
I haven't predicted this yet this season for United. I'm feeling confident. I'm being completely swan and swooned by this new manager. I'm going for forever three no three million united a appointment road Super Sunday.
00:31:42
OllieP
thank yeah
00:31:47
Niall
Yeah, we're back on track. We're going to get into the top half of the day.
00:31:50
OllieP
Yeah.
00:31:53
OllieP
i'm I'm definitely going to go for a win. We're definitely going to win it. I think I'm going to go 3-1. I think you're going to get a goal. You're going to score, definitely. Because obviously, if this new system comes in, there might be a few glitches at the back, just getting it all tightened up, getting it nice and squeaky.
00:32:07
OllieP
yeah, I think it's going to be 3-1. It's new manager balance, like you say. We're going to have a lot of confidence. And yeah, we're going to win 3-1. Come on United.
00:32:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to have to put my money where out I can't keep saying this is the right time. I think this is a better time to go and play of it.
00:32:23
Niall
it
00:32:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
You definitely score because clean sheets is not what we do. and so Even if it's even at one nil in the 95th minute or something, we found that we find a way to conceive that. ah ah I think that there's going to be goals.
00:32:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think because our defense, I think you're adapting to a new system and we don't, while we I'll just leak goals for fun. Really. We did last year as well. We had the ability to go and win the game by outscoring, which we're, we slowly seem to be getting back.
00:32:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're getting better in front of goal. So I'm going to go. No, no, the ending, but a two one win for town at home. Cause I think that the atmosphere, the atmosphere is going to go under the radar.
00:33:00
OllieP
Oh, he's gone for it.
00:33:03
Niall
I'm remote, I'm remote.
00:33:03
OllieP
Okay.
00:33:07
OllieP
It's the right call.
00:33:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:33:09
Niall
It's the only call rude.
00:33:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. I think the the lads made a good point on our episode that went out yesterday that about the atmosphere about how that's going to go.

Conclusion & Farewell

00:33:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Portland Road is not high on people's lists and you think of the places you go and get intimidated by the atmosphere, but it's a good old school ground.
00:33:26
Niall
Nice and tight, yeah.
00:33:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
None of this bowl nonsense that places like Spurs that when they ever get behind, so these these massive games that we've already had Liverpool come and like I said, 45 minutes with a better team and then
00:33:27
OllieP
Yeah, I like the old school grounds. Yeah. Yeah.
00:33:37
OllieP
Hmm.
00:33:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought it didn't turn up in the second half, unfortunately. But we' we've got 10 games of Premier League experience under our belt now. So I think we can manage that second half better.
00:33:44
OllieP
Yeah.
00:33:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
And certainly on what we've seen so far, there's a little bit of a drop in quality between Liverpool and United as well so far.
00:33:51
OllieP
Hmm.
00:33:53
Niall
Yeah, a bit of a drop.
00:33:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm going to have to, on behalf of the the Blue Army, I'm going to have to go confident because I can't, as I've said, I've said three or four times that I'd rather play you now than in a couple of weeks.
00:33:54
OllieP
Ask the
00:34:00
OllieP
You got to.
00:34:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I then can't do all that. And then say, oh, actually, we're going to lose.
00:34:05
OllieP
but
00:34:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think, yeah, I hope when you put crumble under the atmosphere, because you've had you've been known to do that a couple of times over the last few seasons. I'm hoping that's a player problem, not a 10-hard problem.
00:34:14
Niall
Yeah.
00:34:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if we can get the atmosphere bouncing, the players will start to fall apart.
00:34:17
OllieP
Yeah.
00:34:20
OllieP
I will be late kickoff Sunday under the lights.
00:34:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll see, though.
00:34:23
OllieP
It's going to be magic. It'd be amazing, mate.
00:34:24
Niall
Yeah, the touch line is going to be brought in, Dilap's going to bring it in, bring the touch line in for the throw-ins, and then we can't play wing backs because the pitch is too narrow.
00:34:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
and so
00:34:27
OllieP
yeah
00:34:30
OllieP
yeah
00:34:32
Niall
And ah it's going to be a disaster. I can see it already.
00:34:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we'll see how it all goes, how it all plays out on Sunday, but we'll have to call the episode there. Unfortunately, it's been a great laugh going through the game. It's been, well, we'll have to see how it all turns out on the pitch.
00:34:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
So thank you to Niall and Oli for joining me and representing Man United here today.
00:34:54
OllieP
Yeah.
00:34:54

00:35:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
If you want to get on our socials, we're trying to make a bit more of an effort now, getting our posting back up again. at GSP in it helped. If I got it right, wouldn't it? If you go and find it at GSP and Ipswich hope, like I said, we're going to try a bit and make a bit more of an effort certainly in the short term until we all run out of time again, but go follow us on there. But until then we will be, we we will be back next week with our podcast, hopefully reacting from our side of things to a town where I'll keep my fingers crossed on that one. And we'll see how it all plays out that from all of us three,
