Introduction to The Daily Ipswich

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to The Daily Ipswich, brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Rob Bins, and I am on my own today, unfortunately. Although I don't blame the lads for not making themselves available for today's match reaction, because it was probably the most boring game of the season so far.

Analyzing the Defeat to Nottingham Forest

00:00:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
1-0 defeat out of the city ground to Nottingham Forest in a game that lacked much attacking quality throughout all of it, to be honest. and Fortunately, it's another one onto that list where silly mistakes have cost us some points with it. However theatrical the fall to the floor was from Josh Hill, though it was a rash challenge from Smodix. You're asking for trouble going in like that. It's a forward tackle and we paid the price, but I'm going to be diving into that on today's episode. Normally we sort of, I'm going to merge the two episodes together here. We normally do a Monday.
00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Raw reaction, chat about the game, and Tuesday we sort of dive into it a bit deeper. Obviously we have Palace tomorrow night, and the game's coming thick and fast sorry this time of the year. So tomorrow's episode will be a Crystal Palace preview, so I'm going to merge a match reaction Monday and a tactics Tuesday into one here on today's episode. So I'm going to go straight into it then. i'm gonna rushed through my sort of general thoughts of the game and sort of condense a month, a bit of a Monday episode down into one section of today. And last I sort of said it in my little intro there really, it was a dull game, really. It wasn't very and at entertaining. It was, I think even Kieran McKenna said that after the game. It wasn't the highest quality game we played all season, far from it. It was, it's very clear that Forest set up to get a clean sheet.
00:01:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they've struggled with the games against Newcastle and Arsenal recently where they've let a few goals in after a strong start. They had that one of the best defences in the league in the early stage of the season and I think they obviously thought that's that was the state stage one and they sort of, they didn't, off they had a few chances going forward but they sort of, they never risked losing that clean sheet really. They're a very made for a very dull game but obviously you can understand why they've done it and it has paid off because and ultimately because they've kept that clean sheet and they have won the game as well but it's obviously frustrating one for us when we're sort with the team especially the last couple of seasons we've carried it into the Premier League as well that our games often provide a lot of drama and good entertainment especially for a neutral Tuesday and obviously it's good for us to see that think of the 4-3 against Brentford obviously even though we lost the other week even that
00:02:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
So some of the other games we've had, there's been a lot of them late drama in our games, that this sort of an outlier in terms of how entertaining the game was. But I suppose you have to give Forrester props because they x they had a game plan, they executed it. And unfortunately for us, it did work. But we did struggle, I thought, due to them playing so help defensively, obviously, then switching to a back five once fairly sort of midway through the second half with that one that will lead to protect. It made it very hard for us to create anything Obviously that's been a problem this season anyway. Chance creation and scoring goals has been a struggle, but it was particularly difficult with that Forrest back line. And overall, I thought the game was very even. I thought, I don't think you could have argued, had it finished nil-nil, I don't think you could have argued a point would have been a fair result. Perhaps maybe, like I said, maybe you do what you could argue Forrest done enough to win the game with the
00:03:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
obviously got the gold, held the lead well, managed the game very well, I have to give him credit for that, but I do you think, I don't think anyone would have complained if if we come out of there with a point, I don't think there could have been much complaint that that would have been a fair result, I just think we would just lack that, we lack the ability to make clear-cut opportunities really, we didn't didn't have a stand-out chance I can think of really, they're sort of, the one with the lap took it off Chapman would have been our best chance, but we didn't even get the shot away from it really, oh I suppose I would say I had one off the line, that That was a decent shot. Again, that's just that was a set piece. We caused a threat from them all game. Really, that was the best chance we had. Good defending to keep that one out. But just a game that has really and just lacked real quality going forward at both ends. And like I say, unfortunately, it's been an ongoing theme this season where we've lost points in games because of silly mistakes or sometimes individual mistakes or things like that. And in this case, from Smolik's, it was
00:04:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know. It it wasn't a stone wall penalty, I'll put it that way, but when you go in like that, you make there is clear contact made and you've given the player a reason to

Controversial Penalty Decision: Fair or Not?

00:04:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
go down. Has he milked it? Absolutely. Is it still a foul? I have to say yes as well, as much as I hate to. It's a risky challenge to be making. Referee spotted it, given the penalty, and then it's been dispatched very well by a man in form and Chris Wood. and That was enough to fall to the feet in the end. But I have to say, when I watched it in real time, I thought Blayton died. Just from the way he went down, I had no idea. If anything, I thought that would put the referee off, giving it the way he went down. He just threw himself to the floor, screaming out. Done a little tuck jump, really. He just curled his legs right in, flopped onto the floor, and that made me think straight away. I always made something out of nothing there, and then I did watch the replay, and then I thought, oh, we might be
00:05:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
and obviously referee gay I watched the replay and thought hoping that this could be we're gonna watch replay see play and die very old overturn it you'll get booked for simulation we carry on with the game but there was contact there and it's one of those it's in that category of I think if the referee had given had not given it I don't think there was enough there to overturn it but I also don't think there's enough there to overturn it a he has given it and say yeah there wasn't enough in there for a foul is one of them. I don't think VAR is ever going to get involved in that situation. It's just going to say, yeah, play on with your own field decision. And unfortunately for us, the referee gave it on the pitch and that turned turned out to be the match winning moment. But I thought the team selection was interesting. I thought, we spoke about the podcast last week where we highlighted the sort of right mid spot again, as we do a lot of weeks and what we're going to do there. And then just as we,
00:06:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
we say we've been calling for Amari on the right all season and then just as he's really started to hit his stride in the number 10 we've bumped him back out to the right hand side and Chaplin's come in who to be fair I thought had a decent game I thought Amari looked sharp on the right again I just thought the timing of it perhaps a bit odd something we've wanted to see a lot we have seen it one or two times in parts of games but I don't know I thought it was Like I say, Mari just hitting his stride in the number 10 role. So it seemed a bit of an odd time to move him out right. But as we were discussing last week, the options aren't really there. Burns had a decent game against you United, probably his best of the season, but he still, he doesn't, seems, he doesn't hit the levels in the Premier League still, I don't think. And he does tend to be a player who has his best performances at home rather than away. So perhaps that was in the mind of McKenna. That was always, always been the case with Wes Burns. He is a home comforts player.
00:07:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
he doesn't hit quite the same levels away from home most of the time, but Johnson still is his knock. Obviously you've been out of the equation now for the season. So perhaps that was the idea of rather than try and fill a plug gap solution on that right hand side when

Team Changes and Future Prospects

00:07:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
you haven't got a clear stand out to move Mari out there and you've got, you know, Chaplin can come in and do a very good job in the number 10 as he has done a few times this season, then it didn't really,
00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
work but i don't think that was due to the personnel i think that again just because how defensive forest were they set up to get a clean sheet and to make the game as boring as possible because ultimately me if you were if we'd won that game one nil we wouldn't be moaning about how boring the game was and how defensive forest were but so these sort of double games if you win them you don't care and if you if you don't win them you're sat here moaning about how defensive they were and how the game was boring but only the team selection wasn't bad as as something I'd be expect probably you' be expecting to see the same again maybe birds come back in again like say he does tend to perform better at Portland Road but I'd imagine it'd be near enough the same for Palace on Tuesday and then the other side note is that we also saw Nathan Broadhead get on the pitch
00:08:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
in a town shirt for the first time this season. He went away with Wales, got a little bit of minutes. This again, been something we discussed last week. So where is he? Has something happened? we We're starting to panic. What's happening? Because we missed him. He got 10 minutes, which is a good sign. And we'll see, hopefully he can sort of build his time up because we're getting into that festive period now. And I'll chat about it later. And maybe they'll do it in the proudest preview tomorrow as well. But the striker situation again, where All these games come in thick and fast now. Dalat can't play them all. He probably feel like we we want him to, but just for his own fitness levels, he can't be playing 75, 80 minutes in every single game over this period. And Broadhead is an option who could go through a middle or if we need to or we wanted to try something else out there.

Match Highlights and Missed Opportunities

00:09:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
So getting back and on the pitch is a very promising time frame for that with all these games coming up. And hopefully I can make a distance on that hole
00:09:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
shot Shot on shots on target chance creation all those problem stats We have to talk about every week because again we had we had a bulk of the possession just over 50% Seven shots in total just a three on target and no goals obviously so it's a problem there again, but I'm not gonna bore you with chat about Trait making chances what can we do to change it because that is it does feel like it's a fairly weekly Conversation we updates at one where or whether so I'm gonna give it a week off for once and And I'm going to have a quick word now from one of our sponsors. And when I come back, I'll go through the chance that did happen in the game, both for Forrest and for ourselves and see maybe where the key differences were and why we didn't get on the score sheet in the end.
00:10:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
and welcome back to part two of your monday edition of the daily ip switch so i'm going to run through the sort of key chances and moments throughout the game obviously i've touched on a couple already knows notably the penalty but we'll go through in chronological order so A few half chances here and there. I think Forrest had one from a corner. It gives white maybe. It had it wide. Nothing really clear cut until sort of midway through the first half. Anderson whipped across all the way through to the back. Hudson O'Doy picked up. He cut inside like he always does. Luckily for us, Muric read that a he wasn't sold by the little fake from Hudson O'Doy. He knew he was going to cut inside like he ah he does. Got there. He made a great initial save. The ball sprayed out towards Yates.
00:11:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
fired a shot goal, and luckily for us, Sammy Smodix was there to get a touch on it, turned it behind for a corner. Looked like on a replay it might have just about been going wide anyway, but short and certainly wasn't far enough wide for Smodix to be taking any chances, and it's good for him that in his roll down that left-hand side, he's obviously got the defensive responsibilities as well. We know he's a workhorse, he's got himself back, he's got in a good position, he's done a job for his team, he's turned it wide, and obviously Like I said, maybe slightly creeping wide, but he certainly doesn't know that when he's sat there. He's making sure he gets something on it because he can't afford to stand there and go, yeah, that's wide. And then it guy ends up going in off a post or something. Great to see him working hard, getting back. Obviously tracking back again in the second half, which is not so as good of an effect, well, considering the penalty, but very good for me in the first half. And then not too long afterwards, we had our closest opportunity of the game.
00:12:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
a Corner comes in, Dar O'Shea, glancing header, you think, there we go, brilliant contact, flying towards that far bottom corner, you think he's done enough, and then Olorina's there to just tow it off the line. I mean, credit to Olorina, he's done his job, he's the man on the post, he's held his position on the post, he's dealt with the danger, he's cleared it, but disappointing for us, and O'Shea continues to be a big threat from the set pieces, he's just not quite getting over the line with putting him in the back of the net, yeah, he's had chances, I think,
00:13:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I want to definitely have one against Leicester, maybe United as well. I might be getting my games confused there. Now one against Nottingham Forest and it's becoming a real threat for us. He's making himself the target man on the set of pieces. And if you can just start turning one or even just one or two of these into the back of the net, we can start exploring it a lot more, become a great avenue. And I would say the game's coming thick and fast. Now we're going to need goals everywhere we can get them. because I could say that the strike we've got,
00:13:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
heavily rotate the attack and options, make sure no one's overworked. So if the defenders can pop up with a few goals, that'll be extra handy as well. But it's not going in the back of the net yet, but it's a really positive thing to see that he's, I wish I was meeting all these set pieces. In terms of his header, I don't think he could have done anything more really. He got the right contact. He's glanced at, he's found it would have gone in sort of the side net and at that far post had either not been there. He'd done everything right on his part really. and which where the criticism has been for some of the other ones. He's got his bit wrong. He's been missed a target that he's improving. And I don't think we'll be long that we keep whipping in the sort of deliveries of that much quality. It will give him these chances. I don't think it is long. We'll be scoring from set pieces and though Shay will be scoring from set pieces specifically. And the only other real point of note is something I've touched upon already in that first half. And it was Hutchinson breaking down the right wing. We learn said he looked sharp. He cut in.
00:14:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Had a low shot. Sales didn't really deal with it. He parried it back into the danger zone. It looked like Connor Chaplin was just going to come onto to it, stroke stroke it into the back of the net. Lovely, yes, they opened up the chance, but put us in front, going into half time. And then unfortunately, Liam Delappe not realizing Chaplin was behind him. He stuck a leg out to try and get it under control and work a chance for himself. He's not realized Chaplin is there and he's took it off him, which is incredibly unfortunate for us. Maybe a lack of communication, I don't know.
00:14:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe you should say, I assume Chaplin would have given him a shell. I'm not sure, but it's good strikes. The strikers instincts from Dalat kicked in. Try and work the chance for yourself. Every striker's like that. ah ah love They'll want to work that chance for them. So he'll be thinking in his head, I can trap this and smack it in myself. And obviously Chaplin was lurking there. And that was probably, like I said, that probably would have been our biggest chance of the game. And then in the end, it was a combination of our own players that have stopped it becoming a chance. and that's the sort of thing that we've got on. It's a bit, it's an element of being unlucky in this, like we say, perhaps a miscommunication, but a frustrating moment, certainly to watch when you see, you think Chaplin's just going to come into it and either back him to score, definitely there's players on the line, but the way where it was going to look like it was going to set for him, certainly would have been golden opportunity to get into the break, one nil up. And unfortunately it's not worked out that way. But again, hopefully we can, these sort of things that,
00:15:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
going to be ironed out we keep saying that every week but eventually we'll start getting the most of these opportunities on we make them and it was saying in a game a few chances one like that you felt had to go and and' it's our own fault really that it hasn't come to that point in the end which was incredibly frustrating but is what it is at the end of the day we can it was still a long way to go. Forest is a tough place to go they've had the home form hasn't been overly brilliant, but it is a tough place to go. We know I could defensively, they have been at different points this season, but that's even more the reason when a chance like that does open up, you need to be taking it. And obviously we've not even got as far as having the shot on that case, which is the most frustrating point of the game. In the second half, I've touched on the penalty already. I won't go in that into more detail. That was very early on. Again, John made a meal of it, but ultimately
00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
what a player wouldn't at this state of the game at the moment, any player is going to go flying to the floor like that, maybe a bit more theatrically than most, but you've got to make the most of it, or simply referees don't give it these days, and then like I said, it's one of them far wouldn't have got involved, but it's really frustrating. He's made it look like a horrible challenge when it wasn't overly as much in it, as much as it probably still was a foul. He's completely milked, it may look like an assault gun, like you've been shot,
00:17:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
saying that's done. It's sold enough to sell it to the referee who's given it and knowing what Chris Wood's like in front of the goal and calm penalty fired down the middle. Be a brave goalkeeper who stays down the middle from a penalty and instead of Muirich would have been hailed a hero had he done that but unfortunately he obviously played the odds, picked away at Doug Wood, hired down the middle. and However, he got his moment to be the hero Later on in the half, probably the biggest opportunity Forrest had outside of the penalty in the game, whipped the corner all the way out the back, dropped the silver, kept it alive, played it, sent it right back across to Murillo. He thought he was just going to head it over in close reigns and Aro Muric.
00:17:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
fantastic reaction save, tips it onto the crossbar, he's fallen over and he has the awareness as well to parry his other hand, just gets a touch on it as he's fallen over and it comes back down onto the bar, gets it away from the danger and Chris would just throw himself to the floor trying to win a penalty if anything, else there's nothing there's nothing in it if anything, he'd probably be a foul on him on O'Shea, so you can't blame him for going down when he knew he wasn't going to score, he's always chucked himself to the floor again a little bit later under a coyote challenge as well, but I suppose Maybe that was a bit of the game plan from Forrest. They seem to be dropping to the deck every on the slightest touch in the penalty area and it did pay off in the end. Got themselves a penalty, but fantastic from Mureich in that moment. He's been very, he's been up and down. We spoke, we praised him and we criticized him on this podcast over the season, but that was pure brilliance. The reaction say, Murillo's what, six yards out from goal, probably powerful header. It's just pure reaction. It's quite lucky that it's sort of,
00:18:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
down the middle. If Murillo had found a corner, he'd have had no chance, but he'd been given a chance from the header, but he still has to go and take it. Fantastic stop. And then it's the awareness to then just sort of knock it back out. he says he's He's tipped onto the bar, he's fallen over from that initial save, and then just to throw his get a left hand on it and knock it back away from trouble, because had it bounced in the box, you never know who would have got there first, maybe for us to have tapped in. It's really brilliant bit of goalkeeping to keep us in it. and then You did wonder if maybe we would have kicked on from that point and then unfortunately not. And then that was sort of the end of Forest attacking really. They've gone to back five at that point. Happy to play for the 1-0. And the only real chance of note we create was Jack Clark off the bench. So that made some good work down the left. Cross hooked away. Davis kept it alive. And he's just not caught it at all.
00:19:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jack Clark, he's done, he's got it on the left foot. He's just sort of, he's not generated any, anywhere near enough power. And it's just come off straight down the middle. And it's a comfortable safe for cells. And you thought that was the closest we came in the latter stage of the game once for us, a sort of sharp, sharp, happy, and happy to defend for their lives and chance that we wouldn't go and get a goal. That was the best opportunity that we made. And Clark, as someone who has struggled in front of goal this season, the chance he had in the first sort of five minutes at Everton comes to mind straight away.
00:20:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
he's still waiting for that real confidence in front of goal. He needs to get off a mark sooner rather than later, really, and hopefully he can push on from there. But he just didn't look convincing. He turned well, but the left foot, and the strike on his left foot just, like I could say, nowhere near enough power, and it was straight down the middle as well. And you think, had that sort of dropped to a dalap or somebody like that, we'll be seeing it slashed right in, sells no chance.
00:20:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
late equalizing, maybe even thinking about going on to win the game potentially, but like I say, Clark, most of the, as a lot of the attackers, we know, as we know, goal score has been a problem for us, but Clark is probably a lot up there near the top of those who lacks the confidence in front of goal this season. And unfortunately he was the one that fell too, and he didn't make the most of it. And then that was about it really for us. Like I say, sharp shot. That was it for the game.
00:21:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
that they saw out from credit to them for the defensive display, but disappointing that we didn't take any of those, the few chances we did make, we should have taken at least one of them really, but we can't, there's no point looking back and complaining about it, because we've got an absolutely massive 10 days coming up. And this, we can't let this forest game sort of take us in.

Looking Ahead: Ipswich's Upcoming Matches

00:21:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And of course our positive to take from the game, we can bring forward. And when I come back from another word from one of our sponsors,
00:21:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
run through the the general basics of how Kira McKenna reacted to the game and what they can take forward into those three massive games we have over the next two weekends and first of all on Tuesday night.
00:22:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'm back for the final part of today's daily Ipswich. So I've given sort of my reaction to the game, how I thought things went down. So someone who knows a lot more about football, and to be honest, you probably care a lot more about his reaction, is obviously the gaffer, Kieran McKenna. He thought the game was very even, like obviously sort of the general gist of it was, but hit where his disappointment was how the goal came about. And it's a problem we have had in a lot of previous games. So Brentford, you think of the red, cut there's the red card at Brentford and obviously the, the one I get, the Calvin Phillips one against Leicester the following week. there There's been this two games where silly sort of silly or and or individual errors or just poor goals conceded have cost us points. And McKenna certainly felt that was another one for that list today that
00:23:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
The penalty, like I say, is is it soft? Yes, but you can't deny this contact there. it's just It's a forward, ultimately it's a forward trying to throw a desperate leg in there and he knows he's been beaten. If a defender is in that same position, he probably doesn't clip him down. It's just naturally a forward, saw a challenge and McKenna was disappointed in how he didn't push on in the second half. It was like, say the first half, it was very quite evenly matched, really neither side offered too much in front of goal, so we had the O'Shea well off the line, but it was very even game. Kiri McKenna was hoping we would then kick into gear second half and really build on that first half performance, a good a good solid away performance in that first half, getting in nil, nil, not having too many problems on our goal. just didn't kick on completely. We saw if anything, we dropped away in the second half, wherever that part of it down to Forrest saw switching. Obviously, conceding early is always going to be a factor in that, but it was
00:24:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
disappointed not to kick on and obviously Kieran McKenna shares that view as well but an interesting point I thought he raised we can lead in we can sort of flip the other way for some of the games we've got coming up is he felt one of the things that done wrong is riled up the crowd with some of the way things went where we fifth after the penalty and that we sort of and obviously the number one thing you got to do as an away away fan especially somewhere, wherever you go, especially if the crowd's hyped up. Obviously, Forest fans were particularly after the penalties. You've got to try and slow the game down, kill the crowd off, try and lure into an air of frustration rather than excitement. And McKenna felt we did the opposite of that. We sort of played into the hands. We were hyping the crowd up, some of the things. We were letting them get into the game, and they helped get Forest over the line.
00:24:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
obviously it's interesting he points that out from the away perspective that that's obviously something you've got to be careful not to do but it's something we can flip the other way to massive home games in the next week obviously Crystal Palace tomorrow night which we on tomorrow's episode will go through in more detail that one but then also Bournemouth on Saturday the sort of game that Bournemouth are a very good side there aside who are very up and they're quite up and down as well. They've done us a favor this weekend by going and beating wolves at their places as you weren't worried that wolves got kicked on a run with that full on result. They're a good team, they're beating them off, some of them are beating Man City, but that's the sort of game that they haven't been as good in. They do, they're sort of, despite that wolves revolt, they tend to be a team that struggles against those around them and then pulls off these big shocks against the teams higher up. So it's a result we, it's a game we can definitely go and win. and
00:25:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
A key factor that we can flip around, not to say that maybe it was an error of ours on Saturday, the way we played, things that happened in the game, riled up the crowd. We can certainly use that to advantage the two games this week. We want the crowd riled up. We want a fantastic support at Portland Road like it has been in every home game this season. And then make their make the away team slip up. They'll rile up the Portland Road crowd, and that hopefully that will get us over the line. And the two massive games coming up,
00:26:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I could say a three well three massive games we've got. In the next 10 days, it feels like the the next 10 days could have a very defining impact on the season and how things turn out come May, Palace Tuesday, Bournemouth Saturday and the following Saturday away to Wolves.

We can come away with anything more than five points or more from that run of games. We will be well on our way to and a really big boost for survival hopes. And obviously it's incredibly tight down there with the bottom with results this weekend. Palace's 94th minute equalizer, the only making the only sort team down there to pick up points this weekend. Everton getting thumped by Manchester United yesterday certainly made things a lot more interesting. That brings their goal difference right down to the levels there's a lot of the other teams down there.

And it's simply, of so if we can beat Palace Tuesday and the some of the other results go away over the midweek, we could be as high as 15th. It's really tight down there. And it's a massive point in the season. This festive period, the games come thick and fast and none bigger than the sort of run of three games we've got in the next 10 days. Of course, starting with Crystal Palace, which we will preview on tomorrow's episode. But that is it.

For today's episode, the only other one more fit fun thing to add it obviously is obviously it's the FA Cup draw tonight of the second round sort of concluded over the weekend. So keep your eye out, I think it's going to be on BBC two, the draw tonight. Ball 17 is the one to look out for for town. See, hopefully we can put a bit of a cup run together a like we hoped for in the Caravale Cup that didn't work out in the end. But Ball 17, she won on the FA Cup draw tonight and fingers crossed, we get a nice draw and we can kick on and have a bit of a run in the FA Cup.
