Global Sports Podcast Network
Screw your Oscars, screw your BAFTAs at Golden Globes, your grandma's bloody local knitting awards, whatever you want to call it, this is the place to be. On today's show, we're going to take a look back at the best moments of the year, look at goals, players, the best signing.
00:00:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got a few nominees listed. The lads are going to deliberate and decide which one is the

00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
best. And I'm happy to say that all of us are on today's show. So starting with Mr. James Bennett. How are you doing, James?
00:00:43
James
I'm very good, thank you mate, it's good to be back, how are you?
00:00:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
All good. Yeah. Thank you very much. Big hosting responsibility today, but um I'll do best. Richard, how are you, mate?
00:00:53
Richard
Yeah, I'm good. I like it when we all get together. It's it's exciting.
00:00:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Last time we rolled together, I think we were saying was the Spurs victory. So. If it's anything like that, we'll try and keep the same round as we did for that one as well. And lastly, Rob Bint, how you doing, Rob?
00:01:07
Rob Binns
I'm all good mate, I'm looking forward to, I feel like we all should, we all look a bit underdressed I think, we should have got suited and booted for a proper award ceremony, should have we should have thought it through.
00:01:15
James
yeah
00:01:16
Richard
or Or a Christmas jumper or something, you know what I mean?
00:01:19
James
I have got one with me, but I'm not gonna help.
00:01:19
Rob Binns
Yeah, we should have thought it through.
00:01:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's the, uh, Let's say the metaphorical tuxedos are one of the invisible champagne is flowing. But if you've got some at home, then pops an open, but

Best Moment Nominees Discussion

00:01:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
we haven't got any right now. But so the way this is going to start, guys, I'm going to go through each category. Like I said, we've got things like best moment of the year, player goal, et cetera. I've got four nominees for each category. I'll name them all. Then in your head, you can sort of pick which one you like and then also go one by one with liberate and hopefully decide. May get a stalemate on a few, but we also may get some incomplete agreement, which would be nice to see as well.
00:01:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the first award of the Ipswich Daily Ipswich 2024 Awards is, I've gone big, best moment. So this is a big moment that happened on the pitch for the club, for us as fans, a big, big one. So the four I've got is, this probably will take it already, but promotion to the Premier League.
00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
the win at Coventry, our first game back in the Premier League, and Jeremy Sarmiento's last minute winner against Southampton.
00:02:08
Richard
None.
00:02:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
So four big moments there. Maybe some literally may stand out to others, but you may have an emotional attachment to one of them that may not seem as big in the grand scheme of things. But Rob, I'll start with you. Which of those four stands out for you?
00:02:27
Rob Binns
See, it sort of, it depends because the obvious answer is promotion. But if you're talking one single standout, like that, that specific moment, because obviously the promotion is the whole season, the specific moment, I'd say Sarmiento's goal. But I feel stupid to not say promotion to the Premier League, but like, I can't think of, that's like, so that's almost like loads of different moments merged back into one in my head. Big take back to one moment and think when that hit in the back of the net.
00:02:58
Rob Binns
in the 98th minute or whatever it was against Southampton, that was probably the standout highlight of last season. I can't, I'm trying to almost talk myself back into saying promotion because I feel stupid not to, but as as a moment that was the one for me, just Nixon.
00:03:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
writtent while you deliberate there Richard, where are you? Is your head in the same space as Rob or at one of those stand out for you?

Dramatic Moments & Goals Recollection

00:03:23
Richard
They're all really clear, aren't they? Like, I can remember where I was. I was away for that. And I remember getting it through on my phone and just like, you know, you can see the screen, you're kind of like refreshing the BBC sport app and you get, and you see it like flash up and then it doesn't appear.
00:03:34
James
Hmm.
00:03:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. yeah
00:03:38
Richard
And you're like, Oh my God, what was that? Was it like a phantom goal or something? And then it did appear. So Sarmiento's goal was an amazing moment. Promotions obvious, isn't it? I agree with Rob, but like the aftermath of that, I was in the town afterwards and it was just.
00:03:53
Richard
I mean it was mental and it just felt because the game itself was a bit of a damn squib and like everybody kind of knew we were going to do it at that point. and and But the moment afterwards, I can sort of, but yeah, it was just an incredible kind of like time.
00:04:07
Richard
But then the Coventry one as well, like, you know, the Coventry one was the moment where we knew we were going to do it pretty much. Right. And I think that there was that that bank of away fans that you saw at the end of the game, like celebrating it.
00:04:17
Richard
And I remember just standing there in my living room, like shaking my fists and stuff, just knowing that that was that was it.
00:04:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
see
00:04:24
Richard
We were going to do it at that point. So I might actually go for the Coventry one because I think it was just Yeah, it was relief. I think at that point that was such an intense week where we played those three games, but that middle one was like the big one where we we knew it was going to happen.
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
James, where's your hat at, mate?
00:04:43
James
but so I mean every single one mate I mean fantastic selection by the way because like Richard just said as well like you can remember sort of what he was doing for every one and they all mean something I think so it is a good one oh it's tough though for me I think just because of where I was and what was going on yeah the Samiento one for me I think I agree with Rob it was just Obviously, Southampton away.
00:05:10
James
It was huge. And then I think it was the the way he scored as well for me. it was was we Was we at home, actually?
00:05:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're at home. Yeah, I don't want to correct you there as a mid passionate sentence, but we were at home.
00:05:20
James
We were at home, wasn't we? Yeah, we were at home. We were at home, sorry.
00:05:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:25
James
But just the way he scored as well, because he obviously slipped, miskicked it, and then still somehow managed to get his toe to the ball.
00:05:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:32
James
Yeah, it was brilliant. But then, like we said, the whole promotion thing, yeah, it's the obvious one. But I think just personally, I'll go for the Samiento, but I will say when we did get promoted, it was an incredible day and obviously living in Manchester. I'm part of obviously some Ipswich fan groups on Facebook as as we all are, I'm sure. And I see someone put in that they're from Manchester, bubbler, where can we watch it? So I said, where I'm watching it. And then there ended up, I've never watched an Ipswich game apart from the other week now with Tom, which was lovely.
00:06:02
James
and
00:06:03
James
I've never watched an Ipswich game with another Ipswich fan in Manchester because obviously we're very rare, we're very rare up north. And then about 15 to 20 of them all came down so I got to watch watch it with them as well and then celebrate with them so that that was a great moment as well but stick me neck out or go saw me enter.
00:06:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Apart from result.
00:06:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, wow.
00:06:20
Richard
nice
00:06:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we're looking at two to one now. I will say, obviously, I'm just an adjudicator, but I think, Richard, I'm in a agreement with you when it comes to the the commentary one. I think this just as a moment, yeah, but I think I'm just an impartial voice.
00:06:34
James
it's a great one
00:06:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
this so If it was given my opinion, I probably would say the commentary result just because it was a bit more squeaky bum time then. Excuse me, the promotion was on the final day, but it looks like the biggest moment for Ipswich in 2024 on the daily Ipswich Awards was Jeremy Sarmian, so it's a fantastic winner against Southampton, which, you know, there's no real loser here. They're all incredible moments, and they all kind of led us to where we are now. Let's say at any of those moments, we put it with you here as a podcast anyway. that's one of the good thing as well. So best moment of the year was Jeremy Sarmiento's winner against Southampton. Now we move on to best goal. I've kind of got a lot of more recency bias in this and that was because we have more footage of Premier League goals than we do of Jamship. One's a bit harder to attain shall we say and again like I said to you guys
00:07:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
at the top of the show. If there's a goal you think or any moment that you think is worth mentioning here in this list, feel free to shout out and you can commit we can potentially add that to the list as well. But the four I've gone for, this one was Amari Hutchinson's first goal away at Hull in the championship last season. Leif Davis' recent volley against Leicester in our 1-1 draw.
00:07:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jack Taylor's winner against Wolves this past weekend, I've gone that recent, and then Liam Delappe's solo run in our 2-2 draw at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League. It's not more Premier League goals there, I think just Percy speaking, it's hard to really, a lot of our great goals in the Championship were unfortunately in 2023, you're looking at Wes Burns and a few Jack Taylor's Thunderbolts as well, so I couldn't include those based on calendar in the year. But those four in mind,
00:07:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Which one, Richard, I'll start with you. If you've got another one you can think of, feel free to say, but if if not, which one of those four stand out to you as the best goal of 2024 for Ipswich?

Best Goal Nominees

00:08:05
Richard
No, no key for more. He didn't make the list.
00:08:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
What, the one against Kov?
00:08:10
Richard
no I can't remember. I'm trying to think does Keith Moore ever score good goals? Not necessarily.
00:08:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Six yards happens, should we say.
00:08:16
Richard
Not necessarily. Six yards out he likes it, yeah.
00:08:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know.
00:08:18
Richard
Actually, I think his first goal when he scored two against Preston, I think one of those goals was quite good.
00:08:21
James
Rest of them, yeah.
00:08:23
Richard
It doesn't make this list, obviously.
00:08:24
James
yeah
00:08:25
Richard
I'm trying to think who was scoring goals last year because we're wait where
00:08:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
All over the place, really, wasn't it?
00:08:30
Richard
Yeah, it was all over the place. Yeah, and unfortunately we can't have the Wes Burns goal against Coventry and we can't have Brandon Williams' goal against Preston either because they were in 2023.
00:08:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:39
James
were
00:08:41
Richard
Alright, so I reckon Leif Davis' goal is probably the best technique, I reckon, but I think Liam Delappe just announcing himself with that goal against Fulham.
00:08:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Villa, sorry.
00:08:57
Richard
Sorry, Villa. Oh, yeah, sorry, the second one against Villa.
00:08:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:08:59
Richard
Actually, you didn't put the Fulham one in there.
00:09:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Step over.
00:09:00
Richard
The Fulham one was a pretty good goal.
00:09:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:09:04
Richard
Hutchinson's goal against Man United as well. I know it took it a bit of a deflection, but that was a big moment. Yeah, I'm going to go for Dilap's goal against Villa. I think that was the best.
00:09:15
Richard
Yeah, it was a great goal, and I think he's... we don't know We don't actually score fantastic goals that often, it doesn't feel like. but
00:09:22
James
yeah
00:09:23
Richard
Apart from the two I mentioned that we can't we can't vote for they were fantastic goals Yeah, so I'm gonna go I'm gonna go for dilap because sign of things to come I think it was
00:09:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah Yeah, yeah.
00:09:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
James, you're nodding there. Do you have an agreement with Richard's choice?
00:09:37
James
and Um, I'm not to be honest, but I can see, I can see why, do you know what I mean?
00:09:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, wow.
00:09:42
James
the I'm going to go for the Hutchinson against Hull. again, it's more of a personal one, I guess, cause I also grew up in Hull. Like, so I moved from it, switch one of seven, moved to Hull and then grew up there.
00:09:55
James
So I've got a lot of mates still in Hull. so when that went in, obviously he's, he's got two great goals that night, but that one particularly the messages I was getting was, uh, was delightful to be honest.
00:10:05
James
So, uh, ah ah think i think ill i think i'll go for that one just because it rubbed salt into the wounds and it was also yeah great finish huchinsin for me just for that
00:10:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nice one. Rob, have you got one, you go pick a side there, have you got a different opinion as well?
00:10:19
Rob Binns
don't this is All this is done is made me realize how bad I am at remembering goals because I'm trying um even though umm trying to picture them in my head.
00:10:26
Richard
yeah i
00:10:27
Rob Binns
like i know I know what happened, but I can't vision it in my head to try and remember me to make a decision. that
00:10:34
Rob Binns
I was trying to think as well, when you texted the categories earlier, I was panicking thinking we were going to have to do our nominations. I couldn't think of a single goal, but I just can't remember.
00:10:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no, don't worry about that.
00:10:41
James
you
00:10:43
Rob Binns
I think, I think I'm going to lean with the lap.
00:10:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
A lot of them did happen in 2023. Yeah.
00:10:46
Rob Binns
Yeah.
00:10:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:47
Rob Binns
I mean, I'm going to lean with the lap one against Villa just because, I mean, they're all good goals.
00:10:50
Richard
Yeah I know.
00:10:53
Rob Binns
I just, the little added element and so like, cause we had the full on one as well. Like Rich said, it's just sort of the early signs, sort of those first five, six games into the season that,
00:11:04
Rob Binns
the sort of player we had on our hands as well. And against a very good team in Villa as well. Good team generally and a strong defense they had last year. And as we've seen of recently is this weekend, one hell of a goalkeeper as well. Some of the saves he can pull out. So score a goal like that against a team like that. I think just about tips at for me.
00:11:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's a trending pattern, the first two awards, with Robin James and in agreement and Rich on his island there. But all fantastic picks. So the daily up switch best goal of 2024 was Liam Delapp's equalizer against Aston Villa at Portman Road. We're going to take our first break. When we come back, the next one we're going to look at is most improved player or unsung hero. So we'll see you guys in a sec.
00:12:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome back to the Daily Ipswich Awards 2024. Like I said before the break, we continue with today's nominees. I've actually listed it as Most Improved Player, but I'm going to change it to Unsung Hero because I think everyone's kind of maintained a good level of quality. So the Unsung Hero, which is town on the pitch for 2024,
00:12:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, if you think someone else is deserving of this award, please shout their name out. But the four I've gone for are Cam Burgess, Sam Warsey, Axel Twanzobi and Connor Chaplin. James, I'll start with you. Any of those players stand out as the unsung hero of what has been a fantastic year for Ipswich Town.
00:12:51
James
uh... straightaway he said his he was fair to Cameron Burgess for me uh... just because obviously I know we were talking about like a calendar year uh... so Chaplin when he was in the championship was obviously unbelievable uh... but he got the plaudits I feel do you know what I mean so this is obviously unsung hero and I just think Burgess was obviously quality last season and think I think all of us didn't expect him so make that step up to the Premier League this year.
00:13:22
James
um um And I know for certain, I definitely didn't. And obviously we've had a couple of injuries. He's fit. He's coming to the team to fill in and he's, he's been really good, I think. So, uh, I'm going to go with Burgess.
00:13:32
James
He's been, I would keep him no matter who's fit now. I would, I would say he started just now.
00:13:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:13:39
James
So for me, Cameron Burgess, he's had a hell of a year.
00:13:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's very much the topic of debate amongst fans right now is who should be that sense about Perrami and Rob discussed it in detail on Tuesday's show as well. But Rob, who is your unsung hero out of that list for 2024?

Unsung Hero of 2024

00:13:54
Rob Binns
Yeah, um I'm going to go Burgess as well. I think that set very similar reason as James, to be fair, that i wasnt he's probably the player that surprised me the most this season, even as good as he was last year, that he sort of went under the radar last year.
00:14:02
James
And.
00:14:08
Rob Binns
And he was one that I had on my list of I thought would take a long time, if at all, to and adapt to the Premier League level. And I certainly saw him sort of coming in as like the fourth choice, probably, if we were being realistic.
00:14:21
Rob Binns
and
00:14:22
Rob Binns
it He's been sort of thrown in there maybe earlier with more game time than we thought he might get all season with that Greaves injury. And he's completely stepped up to the plate. And this it's not just his own performances. It's what he then allows for Davis as well. And the other players around him, we just tend to look a bit of a better team. when And the same is true last year. We look a better side when he's on the pitch. I feel like he did go under the radar last year, obviously being next to Wolfie, local lads, being there for all the years and stuff. He sort of did slide under the radar and got kind of full a couple of goals last year and some big one in there as well. that ah I think the only the only doubt I have is because I feel like every every podcast for the last couple of weeks have been singing his praises but I think on the whole of the calendar year with I think he's gone a bit under the radar for a lot of people.
00:14:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Richard, you mentioned that Coventry game was a big moment for us in the year. He scored the winner in that game. Is Cameron Burgess your unsung hero for 2024 or is it someone else?
00:15:21
Richard
Yeah, probably. I think it's a clean sweep, but I think I will give a mention to Big Kiefer as well, because he came in when Hurst got his inevitable injury, sadly, and well, he missed the rest of the season pretty much.
00:15:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
The last few weeks or so, yeah.
00:15:35
Richard
He came back for the last week. Maybe I can't remember. did Yeah. you come but
00:15:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:15:37
Richard
yeah So Moore did a lot in that run-in and was like, yeah, leading the line kind of on his own. Al Hamadi obviously came in and and scored a couple of goals as well, but like Kiefer Moore was a big signing that kind of worked out really. He was never going to make it in the Premier League, I don't think, but for those four months he was a big part of that run in. I think Broadhead slightly goes under the radar as well. I know he tailed off towards the end of the season but he was a big part of that championship team too and I think we're kind of seeing him come back into the team a little bit now and some of us are quite pleased with that. But I think overall yeah it's got to be Burgess because I agree with the others that he would have been probably
00:16:16
Richard
yeah i I don't think anyone would have been that upset if it had been sold in the summer or let go on loan or something. And that kind of says a lot considering how Wellies come back into the team and sort of said to a 20 million pound defender, you're not having your position back. And I agree with James. I don't think Greaves gets in at the moment at all. I think Burgess should be one of the first names on the team sheet.
00:16:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's a clean sweep then for the first time of today's show. Cameron Burgess unsung here if you've switched in 2024. Moving on, we're now doing best signings. This is kind of focusing on our time as a podcast and players who really came into the club again. Obviously you could look at January if you'd like to as well. I've actually gone here guys, so it is kind of a bit more open for debate.
00:16:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I've got three listed so far, and then anyone else, because I feel like there's we've made plenty of signings. If there's one you think deserves to shout, please let me know. So the three I've got listed here is Liam Delapp, Amari Hutchinson technically is a signing, Sam Schmodix, and then anyone else, if anyone else you think deserves a spot.
00:17:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Rob, I'll start with you.
00:17:15
Richard
Dara Shae!
00:17:17
James
ah it
00:17:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I didn't want to say he'd win it easily, wouldn't he?
00:17:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Rob, I'll start with you. is Is that who's your best signing of the year? My list is there, but if you think anyone else deserves it,
00:17:27
Rob Binns
I don't know.
00:17:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:30
Rob Binns
I'm trying to I'm really just trying to resist some mirrors as a joke. I'm trying trying to think of a serious answer.
00:17:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was going to put his name down to see your reaction to be fair.
00:17:37
James
And I shot me laptop.
00:17:40
Rob Binns
now I think think um mean I'm going to have to go to the lap.
00:17:40
James
up
00:17:44
Rob Binns
then just So when he went for a spell, he's breaking a record every week and he is better than the level where we are in a table, realistically, that he's a player good enough that we want him to be there to sort of help keep us up this year. And if we want to kick on again next year, he's exactly the sort of player to build around and all you risk losing him. He surpassed my expectations as well, because even though it's obviously you come with a reputation already coming from somewhere like
00:18:15
Rob Binns
and academy like Man City's but I didn't think he'd adapt as well as he had done because he wasn't experienced at this level at all. I wasn't overly impressed on what I'd seen in the championship in all honesty. I thought he was decent but i wouldn't have he wouldn't have been high on my list of championship players to take a punt on in the Premier League and they just surpassed all my expectations already really so and we're not even halfway through the season so I think I have to give it to
00:18:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
to Lee and Dilap Richard at you in agreement there. If there's someone else, tickle your fancy when it comes to best signing.
00:18:48
Richard
I think the laps had the biggest impact for sure. I think Hutchinson probably wins it for me because he was the one, after the promotion obviously, it was the one that McKenna wanted and I think that whole thing around McKenna, that saga that we had with those two weeks where we thought he was going and stuff,
00:19:06
Richard
And all of that was kind of like wrapped around that time where we were not really buying anyone yet. I don't think the transfer window really even opened yet. So, you know, those discussions, I guess, would have been going on behind the scenes about how much money are you going to give me?
00:19:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:19:18
Richard
How many players are we going to sign and all this kind of stuff? And Hutchinson was at the top of his list. So I think you could forgive Amari Hutchinson maybe of the year that he had with Ipswich in the championship, he probably had other options maybe, but the fact that he came back to us and wanted to stay with McKenna and give it a go, I think that showed where the club had come from, you know, over the last sort of three years and stuff. So I think that's the biggest signing in terms of like what it represents really, but the lap on the pitch, I think has had definitely the biggest impact.
00:19:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
James, where's your hat at, mate?
00:19:50
James
Yeah, it's definitely between the two in it. I think, I think I'll have to, I mean, it's a tough one cause I agree with both, but and I think I'll have to, I think I'll side with Richard on this one for with Hutchinson, mainly for the same, for the same reasons, to be honest, because it was such a marquee sign because he was so good on loan. And obviously we all say don't fall in love with a loan player. And then we did.
00:20:17
James
And then it sounds like we were going to sign him anyway, which is brilliant. And see, I think just for that sort of marquee sign in Hutchinson, the lap has obviously been ridiculous, like hell of a sign.
00:20:27
James
And I think if you ask us at the end of the season, I think could you, could be a like possibly there as well, because he looks very, very good.
00:20:38
James
And if he carries on, I know, but
00:20:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Don't fall in love with a lone player, James.
00:20:42
James
Yeah, I just, I can't not. I can't not. I think if you ask me at the end of the season, exactly.
00:20:48
Rob Binns
To be fair, we did we did last year and that worked out, because he's back.
00:20:51
James
So, you know, we don't know because we are going to stay up. So could you just might come again? He might stay.
00:20:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, true.
00:20:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, yep. So are we saying Liam Delapp there, James, sorry?
00:20:58
James
but Yeah. fa Yeah. i No Hutchinson for me. Hutchinson.
00:21:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hudson, sorry, yep. Okay, so our signing of the year got Richie or something.
00:21:08
Richard
What I was going to say, Rob, isn't a Murray Hutchinson in your all-time Ipswich Town 11 and you've not picked him?
00:21:15
Rob Binns
Yeah, but I didn't know how good that was going to be by that point, did I say?
00:21:15
James
sit up
00:21:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's true.
00:21:20
Rob Binns
course Yeah, I completely forgot about that as well.
00:21:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dilap didn't score a few goals at that point.
00:21:21
James
I love your mouth, that's class.
00:21:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:25
Rob Binns
to kind of sudden I can't remember goals, can't remember my own teams I've done at this point.
00:21:30
Richard
We haven't forgotten about it.
00:21:30
Rob Binns
I don't know what's happening.
00:21:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's a lot of stuff to revisit, I think, with this podcast, isn't there? like Start the season of predictions, teams, et cetera, and see where we're at in however many months.
00:21:36
James
Oh mate, it's going to be an absolute laugh instead.
00:21:36
Rob Binns
Oh, not the league table.
00:21:37
Richard
Yeah, yeah.
00:21:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
But so, yes, as not the lead table.
00:21:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
my my My lead prediction table's all right.
00:21:45
Rob Binns
I had a look at mine.
00:21:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I said what? 17th or 18th? So I'm near it. Richard's the one who's, I think, still living a dream.
00:21:51
Richard
Oh, I'm miles away. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:21:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Still living in a dream there.
00:21:53
James
I
00:21:53
Richard
Yeah, yeah.
00:21:53
Rob Binns
Well, my Ipswich one's all right. I'm more worried about the fact I had Chelsea in 10th than mine.
00:21:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, blooming heck.
00:21:59
Rob Binns
You're not a league table. That's not

Off the Pitch MVP Award

00:22:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Justified at the time.
00:22:01
Rob Binns
that the big one.
00:22:01
Rob Binns
aren
00:22:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Justified at the time.
00:22:02
Rob Binns
yeah
00:22:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think, i yeah well, we're going to take a break actually guys. We've got two more to go, but before we take a break, I should say the next one, if you want to guys have a little think about on the show and at home is the off the pitch MVP. So this is someone who doesn't actually go out on the pitch, but it's been very, very integral to Ipswich in the past 12 months.
00:22:18
James
wouldn't you.
00:22:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we are back here on the final edition of the Ipswich Awards on late on the Global Sports Podcast Network. Like I said before the break there, guys, it is the off the pitch MVP. So this is somebody or some or some people, I should say, who have been integral to the club's success in the past 12 months, maybe given that more emotional support rather than actual on the pitch stuff. This could be a bit more of a dividing nominate nomination I should say here guys so the four I've got are our manager Kieran McKenna, Ed Sheeran, Mark Ashton and then us the fans so be careful be careful where you tread who would you say has got that sort of
00:23:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
We wouldn't be here without them. I guess that sort of, um, um, mindset behind them as there's, okay, the emotions are kind of attached to this one. Cause we are one of the nominees here guys. So Phil on it, I should say, but Richard, I'll start with you.
00:23:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know you've got a lot of connection to the club, grassroots, uh, uh, behind the scenes and stuff.
00:23:47
Richard
Well, yeah.
00:23:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
So you might know a bit more than us here, but where's your head out with the off the pitch MVP?
00:23:54
Richard
isnt you Well, you can make an argument for all of them, can't you? Because, like, she shean's a Sheeran's good for the brand.
00:23:56
Rob Binns
Hmm.
00:23:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exactly.
00:24:02
Richard
He's good for he's good for getting the name Ipswich Town out there. And he's been brilliant at that, obviously. I mean, the Ipswich fans, they always say that the Ipswich fans, like, I think the away fans are fantastic.
00:24:15
Richard
Like, they are utterly brilliant, and they were fantastic last year.
00:24:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:19
Richard
And I think loads of Premier League clubs have said how good Ipswich have been. on the road this season as well and and the fan base deserve a lot of credit for that. I think at home at Portman Road, I mean obviously the last two years or whatever for the most part we were winning a hell of a lot of games. There has been a couple of games in the Premier League where the crowd of I think I think it's modern football, really, they they've turned really quickly.
00:24:41
Richard
They've got a bit sour quite quickly. And I think given where we've come from, I'm a bit disappointed that that's been the case. and So I'm not going to give it to the fans, even though the away fans in particular deserve a massive shout out because they are superb and they always travel in great numbers.
00:24:48
James
Thank you.
00:24:57
Richard
It's between Ashton and McKenna. I don't know if you can really look past Kieran McKenna for the obvious. And I kind of think... Mark Ashton, I think, has done a brilliant job. I document it very heavily in my ah podcast series, Rolling with the Punches, if anyone wants to listen to it. ah but But he has done a brilliant job, and he's clearly learned from like other stuff that he's done at other clubs before, where he did a good job for a while, but maybe it faded away, and obviously we hope it doesn't happen with Ipswich.
00:25:24
Richard
But McKenna is the key to all of this. We've all said that throughout the whole season. If we if we had lost McKenna at the start of the season, there's no way Ipswich would have been in any position, I don't think, to stay up. We've got a chance because of him, ultimately, so I've got to give it to McKenna.
00:25:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Rob, is McKenna your sort of off the pitch MVP as well? Or would like to give a shout out to anyone else.
00:25:45
Rob Binns
actually someone, it's not enough to be nominated, but someone who a group of people that do deserve a shout out is actually all the builders. Cause was it a hundred plus different projects we had to do over the summer to to get ready for the Grammy league in a three or two or three month turnaround?
00:25:54
Richard
Yeah, man. Good show.
00:25:55
James
Well, yeah.
00:25:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great shot.
00:26:00
Rob Binns
Wasn't it between the end of the season and kick off there? What would say, I think it was over a hundred different things had to be done because major overhauls to parts of the stadium and.
00:26:09
Richard
Yeah.
00:26:09
Rob Binns
other areas, all all sorts going on behind the scenes, that there was no small project to get done on such a short turnaround. So that took a lot of hard work from a lot of people. And we got a much, we got the first steps of a sort of higher tier stadium now, and we already got the next few projects sort of lined up, but it does just have to be McKenna at the end of the day. It's just, it's just all together for everything really, isn't it?
00:26:36
Rob Binns
yeah We spoke about him yesterday for the three year anniversary. or he with he We didn't know, we didn't have a single idea how well he was going to do when and that was coming together. We forgot as far as like, probably we predicted the league one promotion. And then other than that point, we haven't had a clue. And he's just, there's a reason why when everyone signs it, the first thing they say in the first interview is I've really, what it was the manager that swung me or I've really wanted to work with the manager that He's just completely influential on and off the pitch with things he does.
00:27:10
Rob Binns
And it just has to be, although Ashton deserves a shout as well as Richard.
00:27:10
Richard
Yep.
00:27:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very great shout out as well Robert Stark with ah the people who helped build the stadium to a Premier League ground for all the media stuff, et etc. That was a very important job had to be done over the summer. Can Burgess had a clean sweep for Unsung Hero? Is McKenna going to get that in this category James?
00:27:30
James
Course he is. Course he is. But yeah, a short and sweet for me. Completely agree with what the buyers have said, especially Rob there with the builds and everything. Massive shout out obviously to so Mark Ashton. is He's been quality without him. We probably wouldn't be where we are either. But yeah, McKenna has to be. Just gotta be.
00:27:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. So that is our off the pitch and MVP is our head coach Kieran McKenna. Long may that continue for next year and the years on last nominee for the daily Ipswich award to you guys and it's simply

Best Player of 2024 Deliberation

00:28:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
best player. So the best player overall the past 12 months gone for Yes, again, like I said, if there's anyone you think doesn't hasn't hasn't been named here and you feel deserves a shout and could be the best player, please shout their name in your case.
00:28:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the four I've gone for here are Leif Davis, Amari Hutchinson, Sam Morsey, and Liam Delapp, Olayo Lay. So James, I'll start with you. Out of those four.
00:28:30
James
I like!
00:28:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah let You look like you were the one thinking the most. I thought I'd throw you under the bus. Sorry about that. But out of those four, if you can think of any reason why, if you can't think, you can pass it over and have a bit more time to think.
00:28:37
James
That's alright.
00:28:44
James
No, no, it's fine, it's fine.
00:28:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do, of course. But yeah, who was your best player for 2024?
00:28:45
James
and a consult
00:28:49
James
So all, well I say three, Liam Delappe is not close for me to be fair. i'm Yeah, he's obviously had a good few months, but not taking, can't discount obviously what happened in the championship and the like in the back end of it. So no Liam Delappe for me, but fair play.
00:29:07
James
poor Hutchinson, you did say Hutchinson, right?
00:29:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, Davis and Morsy as well.
00:29:12
James
Yeah, yeah, so. Yeah, yeah. and Hutchinson, again, he had it, he really did have a, ah ah great He's had a great year, obviously, but not quite for me. It's definitely been between Davis and Morsy, because as soon as you said it, they were the two I instantly thought of.
00:29:28
James
and I think just because of what he did for his like personally wise as well with his career I'll probably go for Leif Davis just because to get the most assists in his like a proper full first championship season it was incredible really and and he's he's carried on that form a bit not assists wise of course he's got he's picked up a couple but I think he's stepped up really well to the Premier League So I will stick my neck out between the two. I'll go for Leif Davis because of that. I think he's been unbelievable. But a special mention to Sam Mosey because again, he was unbelievable in championship. He was so important. and And then I didn't think he would make the step up as easily as he's done to the Premier League either. but And he's certainly done that. He's still one of our very much key players. So a special mention to him. It's a close second, but yeah, for me, Leif Davis.
00:30:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fantastic. Richard, who is your Ipsutown player of 2024?
00:30:29
Richard
yeah I think James' logic is zas absolutely right. It's not, it's not Liam. Liam de Lapp's win-loss ratio is very, very poor.
00:30:37
James
so
00:30:38
Richard
and Not that that's his fault. and No, it's not de Lapp, and it's not Hutchinson based on the fact that he had a brilliant end of the championship, obviously, but he's not quite, as we've discussed on the podcast, not quite hit those heights in the Premier League and it was always going to be difficult for him to do that obviously.
00:30:56
Richard
and So consistency wise it has to be more to your day this. We also I've got to give a quick shout out because we didn't mention him in the unsung hero but Luongo was key in the championship.
00:31:06
Richard
I know he hasn't played in the Premier League but he was key he was key in the championship.
00:31:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:10
Richard
And and I think same logic really he was probably our best player coming into the season, most valuable player coming into the season in terms of like, you know, would would teams go for him at some point? And it's Davis, isn't it? Like, I think he would fetch a decent transfer fee. He's probably got the highest kind of ceiling alongside maybe the lap of all of our players. Morsy's been fantastic, but I'll go with Davis as well.
00:31:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Rob, you've been championing for Leif Davis to get his England call up at some point this season, and we'd like to think that could happen. But here's to he, your Ipswich Town player of the year, like Richard and James.
00:31:50
Rob Binns
Yeah, yeah, he is. I think, again, he's really close. It's a lot closer than you might suggest, you might think from the outside looking in. But he has to go to Davis because, like James says, yeah he's broker he broke a championship record that is effectively his first proper attempt at playing in the league.
00:32:08
Rob Binns
He's going to smash the record that stood for a while as well.
00:32:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:32:12
Rob Binns
And like Rich said as well, like he's his is probably a lot higher, well like Dilap, it's higher than the level we're playing at currently and as someone you want to build a team around if you want to, you know, you do that sort of stay up this year and you want to try and kick on and establish yourself in the Premier League, they are the two names you'd build around Dilap and Davis and especially with his new contract as well, he would, his value now must be very, very high and would only jump, there's only room for it to go up as well.
00:32:43
Rob Binns
if and when an England call up does happen. So I think he'd suit Thomas Touche will start the football quite well as well.
00:32:48
James
Mm.
00:32:48
Rob Binns
So hopefully we see that in 2025. But yeah, Scott, I think this goes to Davis for me just for because he's taken to the Premier League so well as well that I can't remember.
00:33:01
Rob Binns
I don't know if he's still there now, but a couple of weeks ago, he's top one chances created. which for a full back player and a team who struggled to whose big problem is creating chances and finishing them at the moment to be topping the overall league standards ah after 15 games or whatever it was when I saw the stat is quite something really considering as well that he was quite slow off, he was a bit slow off the pace at the start of the season.
00:33:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:33:30
Rob Binns
I thought the first sort of three or four games he didn't, he was a bit more cautious and just focusing on his defensive side rather than than getting up getting up the pitch and doing that. So I think he say he was ahead of the likes of Alexander Arnold, obviously De Bruyne has been injured, but all these sort of big names when you think of creativity in this league. And he was ahead of all of them as of, so I'm not sure if he still is now, but as of a couple of weeks ago, he definitely was. So to do that, and again, we say about what he did, the impact he had in his first sort of championship season. This is for now, he said look ah can't quite top the levels
00:34:06
Rob Binns
um overall stats for assists and stuff but to be some leading some of the players there in chance creation for a team down the bottom who struggles to score goals is and unbelievably impressive so that's why he nicks it for me.
00:34:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Clean sweep for Davis, I should say, sorry, and ah ah player of the year.
00:34:24
Richard
he's ah He's also, sorry, Tom, one more thing.
00:34:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, got rich.
00:34:26
Richard
He's also always there.
00:34:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:34:28
Richard
He's always fit.
00:34:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:34:29
Richard
He always comes through injuries like quickly if he has them. And he always plays 90 minutes plus. So that's your dream play. And he's got an engine like no one else in the team.
00:34:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. He's very much like the player who, you know, every, every team has him. But when he goes down, maybe after a slight knock or a foul or something, your your heart's kind of in your mouth, isn't it? And you're like, please don't get injured. Cause he's really that one player in the team. I'd say that you think we can't, we have a replacement in Townsend, but if he goes down, it's, it's such a big dip in quality and comparison to the rest of the score. Maybe Dilap is the exception there.
00:35:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's going to do it for the Daily Ipswich Awards 2024.

Recap of Winners & Ipswich Achievements

00:35:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hope you enjoyed it. I'll just go through the winners as well here. So best moments of 24 was Jeremy Sarmiento's late winner against Southampton.
00:35:12
James
These magics helps.
00:35:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Best goal was Liam Diddle. magic you know best goal was Liam Dilap's equalizer against Aston Villa unsung hero is the Cameron Burgess who's very much a big big favorite of the town faithful at this moment in time best signing to there I put best sign because I kind of ticked off all the people it was a Murray-Hudson right it wasn't Liam Dilap but I put it wasn't Murray-Hudson good I didn't want to say it was a Murray-Hudson then get it wrong I probably should have
00:35:37
Richard
Yeah.
00:35:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
