Introduction: The Biggest Mistake with Supplements

00:00:01
chrisyzen
Hey, it's Christian Jardinoff. Today I want to talk to you about the biggest mistake I see people make when it comes to supplementation. And it's not even super complex. It's not like that they're taking the wrong things or they're whatever, poisoning themselves with terrible quality supplements.

Challenges in Maintaining Supplement Routines

00:00:20
chrisyzen
It's the fact that as soon as things get get a little stressful or busy,
00:00:28
chrisyzen
or their routine slightly changes, they completely fall off the rails. you know And it's like if i if I'm not doing it perfectly, I'm not doing it at all. I used to be like that as well. You try to start a new habit and you do well for a few days, maybe a couple of weeks or even a month.
00:00:52
chrisyzen
and then something would happen and you wouldn't maintain the routine for a day and then the next day you skip but then you you kind of over time it just disintegrates and you're back to square one it's like like going like a lot of people that try to exercise for example though this is a terrible thing to allow to happen because usually the reason people fall off the supplementation sort of routine is because, again, time pressure, stress, change in routine, um travel, and again, it's usually stressful things.

Designing Effective Supplement Protocols

00:01:29
chrisyzen
And this is precisely when you need that support the most, right?
00:01:37
chrisyzen
So the way I design my client supplement protocols, you have sleep support, you have ah support for cognitive function, ah you have stress hormone lowering support, protection against inflammation, protection from toxins. And it's all like this cohesive protocol that is very easily laid out. So what to take with breakfast, lunch, dinner, what to take, you know, before bed, what to take between meals. It's really well laid out.
00:02:06
chrisyzen
And it takes, once you have all the stuff in front of you, it takes like a minute to take stuff for out from the bottles and and take it like literally a minute. So it also takes a minute to take a ah used up small supplement bottle. And let's say you'll be out that evening, you won't eat at home. And though you'll be exposed to more potentially you know unfavorable or unsavory foods.
00:02:35
chrisyzen
oh yeah so you And then you might be out late, you might have some drinks, right? So all of those things are in some way, shape or form stresses on your body. So that is when you need to take the stuff with you the most. And all it takes is you take a little subuse supplement bottle and you take you put whatever you're gonna take with dinner, you put it in the little bottle and you just take it, you put it in your pocket or in your bag or in your car, it's glove box, whatever.
00:03:05
chrisyzen
and you just take it with you with dinner you take it out of your it's so simple like we had family over over the weekend and um you just I brought a couple of bottles with supplements for me my wife her mom was visiting as well some stuff for her and you just take it out pop pop it in your hand and boom you you you swallowed with some liquid it's it takes a minute to prepare and then less than a minute to to take it so what is it really costing in terms of effort or time or whatever it's nothing almost nothing so this is why it's kind of i don't

The Impact of Stress on Routines

00:03:43
chrisyzen
I no longer am willing to accept clients telling me, oh, you know, I was just not doing the protocols really well because I was so i was traveling a lot and so under stress and stuff. I was like, yeah, well you you kind of that's when you need to do it the most.
00:04:00
chrisyzen
because it will protect you from the stress, the toxins, the yeah potentially the poor sleep, maybe you're exposed to more blue light because your environment's different or more kind of polyunsaturated fats or non-organic food. So in those times is when you need that detox and hormone and sleep support the most and the low inflammation support, you know. So it's kind of backwards. And I understand why people get like that, but this is what I'm trying to ah kind of get at here is We need to plan for that so that we don't allow it to happen. right So if you're going to be away for a week traveling, that this because this is another problem, people are away for a week and then they're supposed to come back and continue where they left off, but they don't because the habit is broken. So this is like, for example, in February, I was in Mexico for a few days or or a week.
00:04:50
chrisyzen
And um I took all a bunch of supplements with me. I had like, I don't know, 20 bottles of stuff and some of them I had multiple things in there stuffed in there because I knew it was going to be a stressful trip. So you just plan for it. How can I?
00:05:08
chrisyzen
continue at least taking my supplements obviously you won't be able to eat the same food you're eating at home the highest quality that you can find but at least you have the sleep support the the toxin or the detoxification support the the lowering cortisol which will be super important the keeping inflammation low all that good stuff right digestion gut health so we just have to think how can I make sure that this trip or this stressful time doesn't
00:05:39
chrisyzen
take away from my health. How can I thrive through it? right Because is like ah I have clients tell me, I definitely feel worse now that I haven't been doing your stuff, quote unquote, for the last, let's say, few weeks. And when they get back on it, like oh my God, I feel so much better. I'm sleeping better. I feel less stressed. My my brain works better. I'm more focused.
00:06:01
chrisyzen
So why why don't we try to plan for these things happening?

Practical Tips for Supplement Intake

00:06:09
chrisyzen
Christmas, Thanksgiving, you know, you might be away for a long weekend, holidays, vacations, whatever big projects at work, travel for work. Think about how can I continue doing my protocols while away? And I've been doing this for so long that it's such a no brainer. In fact,
00:06:31
chrisyzen
before as soon as I as soon as I let's say we were planning a ah trip or somewhere to go somewhere the first thing I swear to God the first thing ah we might not have have even bought the tickets yet right but the first thing I'm already thinking about is what supplements am I gonna take what supplement support am I gonna need you know this this is the way I think and I used to travel with I was a lot more hardcore back then. We didn't have kids or dogs or whatever. So I would travel with like powders and everything. like I'd bring my creatine, my amino acids and stuff, and mix them up there. Obviously, now it's too much. That's a little bit too much work. But the the capsules, they're super simple.
00:07:20
chrisyzen
super simple to take. And just as an example, so we had family visiting over the weekend. It was busy. My daughter's birthday, my wife was kind of stressed planning her little party for her friends and whatever. And I asked her on Sunday, did you take the because i my my wife, basically, she just no longer after we had our child, she just no longer has time and energy to like mix powders. So I keep like telling her, you know, you got to mix this powder and that powder is like just she she won't bother anymore.
00:07:56
chrisyzen
And it's kind of like at one point I was like pissed off that she's not taking these important things for detox support, sleep support, all that good stuff, you know, activating the inhibitory nervous system, stress support, kind of stuff like that. So I'm like, this fuck, this is important.
00:08:15
chrisyzen
So I went online, I bought the cleanest supplements I could get in capsule form and it cost like 5x more to to buy a supplement in a capsule form than

Family and Supplement Consistency

00:08:28
chrisyzen
in a powder form. So I'm like, damn it, i have to I have to do that because she's just not drinking them consistently and I can't constantly because I rang her or trying to get it into her you know like mixing it for her so I could I couldn't have made it any simpler I told her you take this first thing in the morning when you wake up you take this with meat when you're eating meat you take this near bedtime you take this in the evening time with dinner or after or whatever
00:08:53
chrisyzen
um and it's just like one two three four things and then the rest of the the stuff I kind of give her throughout the day when I'm taking stuff out for myself from the bottles I leave some for her if she's away at work she comes back she has it in front of her on the kitchen table So, but then I asked her on Sunday, did you take your supplements today? She said no. The ones that I had laid out for her with the capsules, you know, to so to save her mixing powders. And then I asked her, did you take them yesterday? No. Did you take them the day before? No. And this is precisely, again, the time when she needed them the most. So this is, and I'm seated with clients, I'm seated with family, and it's really
00:09:38
chrisyzen
It's something I want to ah want to figure out how to make people not fall into that into that trap. So for just as ah as a another example is during this time when we had family over and I had to like go to the airport multiple times and drive people to their Airbnbs in the middle of the night and traffic and all that stuff, right? and
00:10:04
chrisyzen
I was tripling down on my stress support and my energy support and you know low in them and low inflammation support and detox support. I was tripling down.

The Role of Planning and Protocols

00:10:16
chrisyzen
because I understand the value of that. That's why I designed these protocols to protect from these things. So when they get higher, the stress gets higher, the toxins get higher, the inflammation is potentially potentially higher, right? You're not supposed to stop, you're supposed to double down. So of course, like this is my job and i'm I'm really into this stuff because it's also and not just a job, but it's also my hobby, researching supplements and trying so new stuff out and so I can advise people and on more different things. ah So I understand why some people for them is just I want to do what I have to do to to be healthy and not much else. I don't want to like become an expert on it. But this is this is so key to to really understand is when
00:11:10
chrisyzen
Times get tough, stress, travel, work projects, family commitments, Thanksgiving, New Year, work parties, whatever the case may be, vacations. When the stress increases, you got to meet it where it's at. You got to rise to the occasion. And the easiest thing to do, I'm not saying it's the only thing we do. We don't just take a bunch of supplements all day and think we're going to, you know, that's going to really move the needle significantly.
00:11:37
chrisyzen
We also focus on food and stress reduction and sleep hygiene and all that stuff, but I'm just saying this is the thing that people It's almost like if if you have an emergency You know how you start throwing things off the boat or off the the plane or the helicopter So it's like the first thing people throw out and that's like the most important damn thing in the in that kind of higher stress situation So instead of that being the first thing to stop or to go and it should be the first thing you think about, if you understand me. Like, let's say you wake up at 5am, you gotta go to the airport and blah blah blah. So, you know, oh no, I can't take the supplements too much time. You need to think about it, okay, so tomorrow I'm gonna wake up early, it's gonna be a shitload of things to do. I won't have time to prepare all my supplements and put them in my bag and stuff. So do that the night before, things like that. Or later we'll be out with friends and I won't take my supplementation stack in the evening time and maybe for lunch time and then
00:12:33
chrisyzen
ah So pre-empt that knowing that you'll be out and take a little bottle with the stuff with you. That way you are continuing to you know do the stuff, do the protocol. You'll be way better off long-term if you plan for these you know these times when it just you you may fall off the rails for a few days and that ah for a lot of people that turns into a long-term thing and when they're like it's been a month and oh I have to start back again and then it's hard again to start back so just build the habit
00:13:08
chrisyzen
and then let the habit take care of itself this is kind of where i'm at now after all these years um like well like i said yeah planning a trip for me the first thing is like which which supplements am i going to take how much space do i have is there also the location where we'll be staying is there an organic store nearby. But usually what we do is like we we try to get an Airbnb near an organic store or something on the way so that you can stock up on cleaner food, ideally.
00:13:44
chrisyzen
and the not have to not have to deal with whatever is out there available for most people because most of it is horrifically bad nowadays. And if you don't plan on avoiding all of that nonsense, poofas, potentially fats, toxins, pesticides, herbicides, chemicals, emulsifiers, if you don't plan on how to avoid that or at least protect yourself to mitigate it with supplementation,
00:14:14
chrisyzen
If you you're basically planning to fail by doing nothing. So you have to be proactive about these things because it's the barrage of toxins and just stress is so constant and strong that if you don't make that effort on a daily basis and maintain that habit,
00:14:36
chrisyzen
Then entropy will take over in the inertia of that and you you're just gonna You're just gonna suffer in the end and that's not what I want for people. I want people to thrive Through their old age into kind of whatever happens next,

Overcoming Ignorance and Misinformation

00:14:51
chrisyzen
you know what I mean? I don't want it to be like with my grandmother the last 10 years or at least the last five years Well, it was more than more like the last 30 years but let's let's just say the last five to ten years was horrific was torture and And that is a result of not knowing how to take care of oneself properly, nutritionally speaking, and not doing it because the the the problem was ignorance in that instance. But some people, they're not ignorant, they're just not motivated. So we have to not just know what to do, but do what has to be done, if you know what I mean. So yeah, I think that's all I have to say on this topic.
00:15:31
chrisyzen
I hope you hope you know ah hope you understand what I mean. I'm not trying to be like super militant. And it's again, it's not all about just taking the supplements. But the stacks I create for my clients are so powerful that it would be a shame when times get tough or stressful or busy to not continue leveraging these supplements. I'll just give you an example. One of my clients,
00:16:01
chrisyzen
He worked in the film business and he we did the first session together and I gave him a bunch of stacks of stress for cognitive function, for ah sleep, to protect himself because if you're out on a set working in the middle of nowhere or whatever, food you're going to be eating restaurant food. and ah you know I gave him so some ideas and strategies on how to prepare for that. So he definitely did prepare with cleaner food. He brought some of himself. He ordered like from from these organic places that deliver to almost any zip code in the state. So he did a lot of prep in that sort of way, but he told me ah he told me that he performed much higher than normal based on my guidance thus far.
00:16:50
chrisyzen
and He said that he was able to save the film so far, winning over several big actors who didn't trust the director. I'm not sure I was supposed to say that. um He said
00:17:04
chrisyzen
He said, ah should I should probably delete that. um Well, this is not anonymous. So nevermind. Oh yeah. So he said that his stress was nil compared to the situation. He said, thank you for what you do. I've never been so empowered. And this is just from one session.
00:17:24
chrisyzen
I gave him the stacks, I revamped his basically his existing supplement stack, told him what to stop, what to pause, what to throw in the bin, what to continue when and how much. Then I added my stacks on top for all the different different things, cognitive function.
00:17:42
chrisyzen
Because you know sometimes these guys work 16-hour days perhaps even more and then sometimes they go out for drinks and and and food after so it's very extreme stress to to work on kind of films and stuff so ah gave him my my best protocols like my all my clients get of course they always get the best I can give them and ah but also while he was away we also get got the lab test results and I was very pleased as as per usual that i I kind of had an idea of what certain things what certain things will be required in his stack so he was already
00:18:22
chrisyzen
taking things that the lab tests discovered as imbalances that we need to work on. So he was already on those for two, three weeks by the time that we got the lab test results and we got the that special advanced food reactivity test. And luckily the foods that I had told him to exclude for the most part were the ones that were coming back as highly or moderately reactive. So he was already on the protocol and that's why he was ah performing so well and feeling so amazing and so empowered and that was one session we have he's not he's not even back yet for us to do the second session and he's already like ah you know getting amazing results so and and it does happen with one session because that's the thing a lot of folks some folks they just
00:19:19
chrisyzen
Because there's so much misinformation and and and and conflicting information out there, some folks are very much misguided through no fault of their own. right They trust somebody that was just themselves misguided and this is how we dont problems start occurring. And occasionally, clients are doing several things really that are really detrimental to their health. So having someone like me just say, just stop that supplement, stop eating those foods, please.
00:19:47
chrisyzen
Uh, add these foods, don't be afraid of those foods. They're not bad. And when they do that very quickly, they get good results. So sometimes one session, people are like two weeks later after the first session, after they get their protocol, they're like, Oh my God, I had one client said,
00:20:07
chrisyzen
like a week into it hadn't even started the supplements just the dietary changes alone said ah last ah something like last Friday I felt better than I had in a very long time stuff like that right because the dietary strategies I know this was more a discussion about supplementation But the dietary strategies work really well to lower the stress hormones and then support, give the body the nutrients it needs to do a lot of awesome stuff like maintain good brain function, mental performance, physical performance. Then you were able to sleep better because your stress hormones are lowered.
00:20:42
chrisyzen
your blood sugar ah regulation works really well so you know having these dips and energy slumps and stuff like that so a lot of really good stuff happens with the diet you know but this a client example I just gave with the the the dude that works in the film business This is the perfect scenario where instead of saying, oh, it's going to be busy, I'm going to come back and then i'll start then I'll start the protocols, right? He said, no.
00:21:16
chrisyzen
Christian knows what the hell he's talking about. If he says, take these things, they'll help with the stress and the sleep and the whatever else I'm going to do it. And he did it and he's getting amazing results and he's performing at a super high level and we have barely started.

Trust and Tailoring Protocols

00:21:33
chrisyzen
So this is, this is what I tell my clients, just follow the recipe. And I, I, I do have clients occasionally where it doesn't happen so much anymore.
00:21:43
chrisyzen
Because usually folks that start working with me, they they already trust me, they listen to the podcast, or they read the book, or you know they've been referred from like a podcaster that they trust. So they they just follow the instructions really well and stick with it. But ah just as ah as ah as another example,
00:22:02
chrisyzen
I have a recent client that just found me randomly really randomly and he has not read the book yet he hasn't really listened to the podcast much um so he was he would not follow everything perfectly yet right for for a full week or more he he would like to try other things because he was working with other practitioners and he's getting pretty lackluster results so far so i'm just waiting to see when can we do like one month of just following my protocols uh without a random trial and error based on just kind of whims and oh i saw this and then i thought maybe i'll try that and somebody told me that was good and stuff like that when we do my thing just even for like two three weeks or a month or more ideally of course
00:22:55
chrisyzen
i am absolutely sure that he will get really good results i'm just waiting for that time where he trusts me enough that he will just you know drop other all the other random things and allow my stuff to work because i know it to work but luckily most clients they listen to me for a while they trust what i have to say you know they read the book or this again they kind of tuned in for a a good while so they know i'm not just pulling things randomly out of my ass and and making protocols everything is super targeted for the person's specific needs and ah like i said often time
00:23:40
chrisyzen
the the when we get the lab results it often corroborates what i expected the person to have in terms of imbalances right so in terms of but potential toxicity oxidative stress deficiencies requirements for certain vitamins minerals and so on so by that time we get the lab results and it's good to know But we've already we're already doing the work to address the issue. right but it so it is also good you some Some might say, well why don't you just do what you would do and not do the lab test. It's good to have the data because you need to know
00:24:17
chrisyzen
what was contributing to your health issue or or multiple health issues, right? Because that way you will know why an intervention or which of the several interventions you did, you tried, is actually contributing to helping you resolve your health issue. Once you understand the mechanism behind the health issue and what it takes to restore health, things things make a lot more sense and people follow through a lot better with the protocols.
00:24:46
chrisyzen
Rather than, let's try these random 20 things and hope some of them work. This is what a lot of clients are doing now that that that ah that are not working with a practitioner. ah Or rather, I should say, this is what a lot of people are doing right now. They're listening to some podcasts. This guy said, oh, keto is good. So they'll try keto for a month. Then they don't feel better. So they, oh, or maybe I need to do carnivore.
00:25:10
chrisyzen
So the carnivore carnivore wasn't good ah but then some guy said that curcumin or turmeric extract or whatever was really good and then maybe they have inflammation so maybe thell they'll take that and then over then the resveratrol is gonna be good for some something or other.
00:25:28
chrisyzen
I see folks with like 2,000 plus or 30 sometimes or more supplements that are like these concoctions of herbs and spices and extracts and Really very little rhyme or reason behind behind why they're in the protocol, you know and just just trying random things random random ah concoctions random diets ah Things that people recommend on the internet I read it in this book I read it on that article that website the hurdle that podcast there's no real cohesive strategy that has

Consistency and Testing in Health Routines

00:26:10
chrisyzen
looked at the person's individual metabolic systems right the digestive system thyroid function e etc etc right blood sugar balance they haven't been assessed there hasn't been targeted supplement rather there has been targeted lab testing to uncover further imbalances that the naked eye cannot see or simple observation and assessment cannot detect And then there hasn't been a strategicically you know strategically placed nutrition, supplementation, stress reduction, gut healing, detoxification, hormone balancing protocol. And then even if some of these things have been done, maybe they've worked with some practitioners or figured out some stuff on their own.
00:26:50
chrisyzen
They don't have anybody to call on when they get stuck and people invariably will get stuck. And the the problem is and usually when people get stuck, they say, Oh, that thing didn't work. So I'm going to stop that and try the next thing. So with this constant stop, stop, start strategy,
00:27:09
chrisyzen
you can't really you can't really get very far. It's like if you try to for a week to learn the violin, oh it didn't work, I'm not good. Then the next week you try to learn the piano and then after all the guitar and then I'll pick up the drums for a month and then oh that's too hard. and So you know if you if you try that strategy, are you ever going to learn to play music well or any instrument really proficiently? Probably not.
00:27:35
chrisyzen
you know quite a lot about the different maybe genres of music maybe styles and and and various instruments and stuff like that you you have accumulated a lot of facts and tidbits of information but you're not gonna know anything about creating a song or running a band or an orchestra or whatever the whatever your goal may be in the end right so it's like this with health The problem is there's so much information and people think that accumulating information and listening to people will actually make sense for them. but But it's like me learning what a carburetor does. I don't even know if cars have carburetors. Then learning what an oil filter is and how to change brake pads.
00:28:16
chrisyzen
And if my car breaks down on the side of the road, I'm freaking still gonna be still freaking clueless to figure out what the hell is wrong with this thing. So it's like that with the human body. People spend tens of thousands of hours for a reason, because it's not freaking easy. If it was easy, everybody would be super healthy, when in fact the opposite is happening right now.

Adaptive Reserve and Health Management

00:28:37
chrisyzen
Most people are not thriving. Most people are far far far from optimal health and a huge majority of people are in a poor state of health. Some are not showing um symptoms yet because they just have still got that adaptive reserve but um sooner or later the body stops being able to maintain homeostasis and that's when that's when these
00:29:07
chrisyzen
symptoms start to manifest and really ruin a person's quality of life and all of that can be avoided and usually it can be reversed to a great extent if a person is smart enough to start early to start working with somebody that knows what is going on what to look for what what to do when when things get a little bit tough otherwise this random trial and error takes you usually to a lot of dead ends and a lot of frustration and wasted time money and effort so that's my little rant over hope

Conclusion and Final Thoughts

00:29:46
chrisyzen
that you got some value out of this episode and I'll see you on the next one thank you for tuning in
