Introduction: How to Actually Live Longer

Hey, it's Christian Jordan off. Welcome back to the how to actually live longer podcast.

The Role of Sexual Health in Longevity

00:00:06
chrisyzen
I'm a functional health practitioner, longevity author, and I don't know about you, but an important aspect of my longevity program, longevity goals, is to maintain sexual function and hormone balance as for as long as possible. I don't think we want to be 90-year-old lumps of meat that are like this asexual barely functioning sort of clump of cells, you know, we want to be
00:00:41
chrisyzen
vibrant, healthy, and a big part of that, at least in my opinion, should be a healthy

Athletes and Sexual Health Challenges

00:00:49
chrisyzen
libido. Because if your libido is healthy, if your sexual function is you know optimal or close to optimal, it it means you are healthy. right There's many different ways to gauge how healthy a person is how well their mind works you know how ah the same um you know just their outlook on life ah physically how fit they are that that is one but it that that's not all of it right there's a lot of.
00:01:20
chrisyzen
athletes, especially a lot of female athletes in this example where they are they look very fit and and great and whatever else and they are fit ah but they don't they don't have any sexual desire, they might be infertile, they might have amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, they might not have any period whatsoever and that is not a sign of good

Simplifying Hormone Balance

00:01:42
chrisyzen
health. right So in this episode I'm gonna talk to you about the overarching strategy of maintaining optimal hormone balance into old age and with concomitantly with that um great sexual function really and I'm just gonna simplify it as much as I can for you because the more the more kind of
00:02:16
chrisyzen
learn and grow and develop as a practitioner, the more it it has allowed me to simplify things a lot for my clients, right? So at the crux of it, sexual function, optimal hormone balance, what does that entail for a

Stress vs. Protective Hormones

00:02:34
chrisyzen
man and a woman? So in both cases, really, it is all about or largely about keeping stress hormones low.
00:02:45
chrisyzen
and keeping the positive the protective hormones high really it's that it's that simple but it does get a little bit hairier in practice because a lot of things increase the stress hormones and we continue to produce the stress hormones in very very similar quantities to uh when we were like 20 years of age when you're 70 you're producing those hormones cortisol and your adrenaline and whatnot. You're producing them pretty much the in in the same quantities but the other hormones, the protective ones, so for men specifically the androgens testosterone and and DHT and then also DHEA and then for women DHEA progesterone and pregnant alone in both sexes, those are kind of the protective hormones, right?

The Misunderstood Role of Serotonin

00:03:38
chrisyzen
So that's one aspect of it. And then in terms of neurotransmitters,
00:03:43
chrisyzen
What you want to do is do the opposite of basically of what the mainstream is telling you, that you want to boost serotonin, right? The happy hormone, the happy chemical, that's absolute lies and BS designed to sell you SSRI drugs. And it's worked really well for decades, but that, even if you go on Wikipedia right now,
00:04:04
chrisyzen
you'll see there's a line despite long-standing, you know, they had the much more politically sort of phrased way to say it, but um ah basically even on Wikipedia it says that there's no scientific ah basis that serotonin is low in depression in fact serotonin is often high in depression right but here is the thing so not only were we sold serotonin as the quote-unquote happy chemical it's anything but in fact it's the probably one of the worst things to do is to try to boost it
00:04:42
chrisyzen
even more so because it already it's it's actually just kind of give you what it's what its function is it actually is more of a stress hormone so when the organism is stressed serotonin increases it and it seems to Its function is to inhibit certain aspects of ah the metabolism so that that energy can be allocated to other areas and of the body, which allows the body to survive stressors, right? So when when there's, and the the one of the biggest stressors is not having nutrition and and and and and calories and food,

Dopamine vs. Serotonin: Impacts on Mood and Sexual Health

00:05:16
chrisyzen
basically. So when that happens, you want to inhibit the nice to have functions and and think about it. What are the,
00:05:23
chrisyzen
the nice to have functions and it's sexual function right libido fertility these are not essential for immediate survival so this is the lie we have been sold is that you need to boost serotonin it's awesome but if you look at ah it's a recognized condition now called post SSRI sexual dysfunction so this is what you want to not do for proper sexual function and optimizing hormone balance in terms of sexual health you don't want to boost serotonin you want to do the opposite which is the opposite or rather serotonin dopamine they're like a sea salt so if if one is high the other one is probably low because they inhibit each other synthesis so what you want to do is actually you want to boost dopamine and when your dopamine is high and your serotonin is low you are a much happier
00:06:13
chrisyzen
person you want to engage more in sexual activities with your partner um you want to explore your environment and when serotonin is high people basically become numb they they tend to you know ah if you've ever seen the person don't necessarily arise how they come they they they're just their whole sort of diaposon of ah the the range of um ah emotion is really compressed. Some people call say they they feel like a zombie. And here is the thing. There's a ah paper called ah Pharmacology of Serotonin and Female Sexual Behavior, right? This paper was published in 2013 and basically
00:07:07
chrisyzen
I have some quotes from this paper that I think will relate to you why trying to boost serotonin is a terrible idea if you want to have libido, you know good sexual performance, desire, to have you know um good hormone balance, and stuff like that. So this is from that paper, Pharmacology of Serotonin and Female Sexual Behavior. So although findings were not always consistent, the bulk of evidence supported the hypothesis that compounds that increased serotonin reduced female sexual behavior and compounds that decreased serotonin facilitated sexual behavior.
00:07:49
chrisyzen
so and then another couple of quotes Most antidepressants can produce sexual dysfunction in human females, but SSRIs are associated with the highest incidence, and the most prevalent complaint following SSRI treatment is related to low sexual desire and satisfaction. but because And here's the thing, low sexual desire is kind of understandable if serotonin's role is to lower that desire to cons so you can serve energy. But the the the low sexual satisfaction could be because serotonin, um first of all, numbs you, right? So it helps you endure the pain and suffering that you're through. That's why it's a stress hormone or chemical or neurotransmitter, really.
00:08:36
chrisyzen
And that's why stressors increase it, and we can discuss stressors later. but um and that So that's one quote. Another quote from that paper is, there is little doubt that pharmacological manipulations leading to alterations in the serotonergic system can influence female sexual behavior in a variety of species, including humans. So it's well known that serotonin lowers ah sexual desire in females like a lot of women complain that and their partners complain that they just don't want to get jiggy with it don't want to get it on and that sucks right that's horrible but here is the thing what you gotta understand is so that this is one aspect of it so the the whole low dopamine
00:09:22
chrisyzen
high serotonin issue that's that's an issue for a lot of people but it's not just SSRIs that increase serotonin a lot of other stressors increase serotonin because again it's released when basically when you when you have whatever stressor be that work exercise you know just chronic sort of psychological stress with uh it could be due to again your job your business school uh plan demics whatever else so when the stressor is chronic that tends to increase serotonin and that then has sort of ah this inhibitory role on these nice to have functions right

The Dynamics of Hormones with Age

00:10:04
chrisyzen
it's like It's like a metabolic regulator, is is what they call it. And the problem with that is that serotonin
00:10:18
chrisyzen
triggers the the um the release of other stress hormones like cortisol and estrogen and prolactin and that obviously has other negative effects on on sexual function which we can cover in a little bit but so that's one stressor. Other stressors are um fasting that that has also been shown to increase serotonin right ah certain compounds can increase it right certain certain herbs actually have serotonergic ah um activity so they can activate serotonin receptors right so that's like that's just one aspect so to to improve sexual function and hormone balance
00:11:05
chrisyzen
first of all we want to increase our dopamine I think that's kind of the the take-home message from this this side of the discussion right so this this serotonin dopamine thing is a little bit I think most people don't don't get this fully I think most most people kind of have been sort of ah engineer to think that though high dopamine is bad because it you know it will cause addiction and psychosis and stuff like that but it more and more evidence shows that it's actually psychosis and and stuff like that and mania and whatever that's more caused by cortisol and serotonin right um so and estrogen can play a role so that's one side of things then we can talk about the actual sex hormones right so as I mentioned already
00:11:54
chrisyzen
when you're 20 you are producing plenty of the sex steroids like women especially a lot of progesterone men a lot of tea some of that is you know converting to to dihydrotestosterone DHT which is the most potent androgen in in in in males or in general in the human body and that has a great obviously ah effect in terms of countering the stress hormones. so you can This is why when you're younger when you're like 20 or even 30 you can endure a lot of these stressors
00:12:28
chrisyzen
right right? Intermittent fasting, low carb diets, whatever, what whatever, have what have you not sleeping, right? But ah so you have the stress hormone release from all of those stressors, right? Whatever that might be going to the gym six times.
00:12:45
chrisyzen
a Week for an hour and a half and then doing that low doing faster workouts low carb diets along the way Maybe ice baths so you can endure that because you you while you do get a stress response a bump or a spike in the stress hormones like cortisol adrenaline you still are producing a lot of these protective hormones that counter the effect of those stress hormones, so testosterone And progesterone are antagonistic to cortisol and and and

Diet, Stress, and Fertility

00:13:18
chrisyzen
estrogen. ah So progesterone is antagonistic antagonity to cortisol and estrogen. And testosterone is especially antagonistic to cortisol. But likewise, over time, as we accumulate this function and sort of this adaptive reserve of ours diminishes the stress hormones are not opposed as well as they were when we were younger so they that's when they can start to wreak havoc on the body and this is why
00:13:51
chrisyzen
I kind of tell people, I kind of joking on the other podcast Connecting Minds, I did this episode called um Low Carb Diet, a tool for the population, because um when you look at what low carb diets or in general what stress causes, it's very antagonistic to sexual function and fertility fertility right so just to give you some some quick examples here i don't want to go too deep into it because i already kind of covered that in previous episodes but so cortisol keep in mind what raises cortisol again
00:14:37
chrisyzen
not eating for long periods of time, intermittent fasting, a lot of too much exercise, especially endurance exercise, especially if you're not fueling you not feelinging well um I think I said low carb diets. Yeah, so low carb keto diets, ah they will increase stress and and cortisol specifically and anything that stresses you out will raise your cortisol, right? So A lot of us, we we are causing our cortisol to be elevated because of our you know fasting regimes, low carb regimes. That's the kind of the more physiological sort of ways to increase it. But then a lot of us are also
00:15:21
chrisyzen
increasing our cortisol by you know just trying to to freaking survive in this crazy world you know this world is this environment is very stressful so we are stressed by you know you when you're in traffic and you get pissed off when you're waiting in line and it's you know it's taken ages or so something happens get calls texts sms's um things like that They will they will raise cortisol for many people, right? So it so some of us can could take can take it better than others. like ah I personally.
00:16:00
chrisyzen
was definitely a high cortisol type and probably a high serotonin type back in the day. And I just figured out strategies to keep my cortisol low physiologically with with supplementation strategies and and the way I eat, the way I structure my meals throughout the day.

Cortisol's Wide-Ranging Effects

00:16:15
chrisyzen
And this is what I teach my clients really how to keep cortisol and the stress hormones physically low in the body.
00:16:22
chrisyzen
because when you have the antagonists to the stress hormones optimized, they cannot it's like when you're younger, you know you you can stress the Jesus out of yourself, but because you're meeting the the stress with the protective hormones, you are good, right? That's why yeah young folks teenagers, whatever, they can endure a lot of this kind of stress or when you're 20 you can endure a lot of stress without visibly feeling it or visibly being kind of perturbed by it. But um what does cortisol do when it's elevated? So first of all,
00:17:01
chrisyzen
It disrupts the HPG, right? So that's the hypothalamic pituitary gonado axis. So the hypothalamus, the pituitary glands in the brain, the gonads are for men, the testicles, the testes, for women, they're the ovaries. Those are also gonads. And what cortisol does is it basically
00:17:28
chrisyzen
inhibits this ah peptide called GnRH, which is released from the hypothalamus, which then stimulates the pituitary to release luteinizing hormone, right which then stimulate ah stimulates the gonads to you know produce whatever, testosterone, progesterone.
00:17:50
chrisyzen
So that, i I think it's probably, so when when you have a stress hormone response, the reason these things activate each other, like serotonin elevates cortisol, and cortisol elevates estrogen, and and then estrogen also elevates cortisol, the reason they probably go up together is because it's like,
00:18:10
chrisyzen
ah Sounding one one alarm siren that there's a an invasion attack or like some kind of emergency that you want other kind of depots in the city or whatever they also signal so the rest of the cells or the rest of the people in the city know that there's there's we have to batten down the hatches or something is happening.
00:18:29
chrisyzen
so they're probably doing this so the cortisol probably it stops the it disrupts this hpg access to halt production of sperm you know testosterone synthesis because right now we don't want to be doing that we are under stress that's why cortisol is always high cortisol is always high because we are under stress it's a fight-or-flight situation with that we need to survive so this is probably ah um in a normal environment, like back in the day, this this would have been a good thing. So the body is not obviously not stupid, it's doing these things for a reason. But in today's environment, because the stress is chronic, this is what will then, you know, ah ah diminish sexual function, fertility, desire sexual desire and stuff like that in, not just in men, but in women.
00:19:21
chrisyzen
um Also cortisol upregulates aromatase. because aromata So aromatase is the enzyme that converts testosterone into estrogen. okay So the probably the reason why cortisol upregulates this enzyme is because cortisol breaks down our tissue, which you know kind of is a degenerative thing, but estrogen stimulates growth and division of cells. That's why it's implicated in cancer. you know when it's uncontrolled it can
00:19:55
chrisyzen
contribute to this cancerization process.

Supplements and Modern Stress

00:19:57
chrisyzen
But it does have a physiological role and that is when you're if if cortisol is high, you're probably running for your life or fighting or you're somehow injured and estrogen is going to be needed there to stimulate the growth and division of new cells to heal wounds and heal tissues, right? So again, in in normal amounts back in the day when the stress would be like maybe, I don't know, every few days,
00:20:24
chrisyzen
certainly not ah all day long while you're awake, maybe then ah it this would all have been fine because then you know you have because the stress stops, the protective hormones can be produced and then they can oppose estrogen, so they kind of put the brakes on it. so But that's what cortisol over time being elevated causes more of the androgens to be ah turned into estrogens basically.
00:20:57
chrisyzen
So the other thing cortisol does if for males, it inhibits the latic cells in the testes. And these are the the the cells in the testicles that produce the synthesized testosterone. okay So that's another issue. That's another reason reason why we want a lower stress but ah It has to be a part of our longevity, anti-aging strategy, improving mood, improving sexual function, optimizing hormones. so A big part of it has to be lowering stress. And I understand that most people have stressors that are unavoidable, like kids and jobs and whatever whatever else.
00:21:42
chrisyzen
So this is why we have to use a very smart supplementation strategy to do this. Because it's not enough just to do breath work or meditation. It it does help if you if you're the type that does that kind of stuff, more power to you. um But we need to go a few steps further. Super important in the modern world. this is This is how you adapt to to the modern world's challenges. If you don't, it's like adapt or die. If you don't, you will degenerate faster, you will age faster, develop disease faster. And unfortunately, along the way, a lot of these things like, you know, so ah good sexual function and
00:22:28
chrisyzen
desire and libido and joy and a lot of these things will be shut down along the way so it's kind of a horrible way to go which is why we have to oppose the stress not just with sure you know lowering stressors in our environment job family whatever way we can figure that out that's absolutely a piece of the puzzle but unless we have the the supplementation strategy to physically lower the hormones the stress hormones and you know ah support the the production of the um protective hormones then we're gonna get in trouble sooner or later okay ah cortisol also increases six hormone binding globulin levels that's a protein that binds to testosterone and it can basically make it unavailable for use by the tissues um what else so
00:23:21
chrisyzen
Yeah, cortisol has a negative effect on sleep. I mean, we're not going to go into the nitty gritty of how cortisol can be detrimental to to humans, because that's a whole episode in and of itself. And I've covered it before, and I covered it in the book. But um the other thing, so let's talk about, so that's cortisol. And so cortisol, and just one more thing is cortisol, they've done they've done research where they inject men with hydrocortisone which is synthetic cortisol or they inject them with insulin and what they found is that in both instances that lowers testosterone and the so obviously you can understand the hydrocortisone injection you can understand that just to explain why insulin
00:24:14
chrisyzen
would do that is because when you inject someone with insulin and they're kind of not in a fed state what the insulin will do is it will cause the clearing of blood glucose from the bloodstream and that that will cause a blood sugar drop and that is probably one of the most primordial stressors to the body when your blood sugar drops you're very close to collapsing into a coma and soon dying. So cortisol is the main role.
00:24:47
chrisyzen
is to, as soon as that happens, as soon as it starts happening, to increase the blood glucose. right so its it's ah It's an absolutely necessary thing we need to keep us alive, especially if you're on a low carb keto diet and doing a lot of intermittent fasting. Cortisol is keeping you alive, so it's not that it's this horrible thing that we have to like keep low as as much as possible. it's it's If you've been doing a lot of keto, low carb, carnivore and stuff, cortisol is always what's been keeping your blood sugar you know in range so you don't collapse into a coma and die. So it's not that cortisol is always the bad guy. However, it's really the modern environment that
00:25:33
chrisyzen
Is causing our cortisol to be elevated for a plethora of reasons that like we've already covered and it's Because it's that cortisol running unopposed in the body wreaks a lot of havoc Cause a lot of damage. So this is why I'm this what I'm talking about We have to not we cannot expect to remove all the stressors from the modern environment But we have to adapt and upgrade how we think about how we or Living on a day-to-day basis in super simple, you know, I teach I have you know Folks in their 70s doing this stuff. So, you know, it's it's so easy um What else what else cortisol and tea we covered that I think I'll stop there so low carb diets and fertility so we already discussed that so the lady excels produce the um So they produce a testosterone
00:26:32
chrisyzen
and testosterone regulates sperm production, right? So the that is sort a very energy intensive process and it relies heavily on glucose, right? So we have to understand there are certain cells in the body that have no mitochondria, like the red blood cells, so they have to have glucose. So you will never not make glucose, doesn't matter how deep you in a ketosis and a fast you are.
00:26:59
chrisyzen
So you're always producing glucose.

Diet Myths: Carbohydrates and Fructose

00:27:02
chrisyzen
um So when there's little ah relative glucose because there's not much coming from the diet, the body has to ration the glucose and who who gets the most glucose the brain um unless there's ketones of course then ah but still the central nervous system um uh the red blood cells so it's quite a lot of glucose that's needed so you can bet that a lot of other things
00:27:30
chrisyzen
will not get the glucose that they need, right? If you are depriving yourself of glucose. And um yeah, so ah those a lot of those cells that and need glucose because they have no mitochondria or few mitochondria, they're actually found in the eyes.
00:27:47
chrisyzen
ah in in the gonads that we already covered. Just as a quick aside, I find i found when I upped my ah car but ah carbohydrate clean carbohydrate intake, my eyesight improved. I almost couldn't believe it. happened It happened fast. That's why it was so striking because I was like ah ah looking out the balcony in my place here I could suddenly see things that were blurry like a week or two ago and I was kind of straining to see you know so that's a prime example of low carb diets just
00:28:24
chrisyzen
shutting down more nice to house because yeah you don't your eyesight doesn't have to be really really good for you to survive right you just have to see look around and see silhouettes and is something chasing me a runaway kind of way see all this i can eat that i can run away from this i can bang or whatever this very simple very simple stuff um so then
00:28:51
chrisyzen
You have the sertoli cells, that those those produce sperm. They need glucose for optimal sperm development. Remember how many young folks in their 30s and late 20s are infertile today? Cannot get pregnant naturally. And what are a lot of those guys doing? Low carb, keto, carnivore, paleo, intermittent fasting, lots of exercise.
00:29:18
chrisyzen
getting Rock Swole, getting Swoberham, Lincoln, you know? ah So yeah, then, okay, so have let's say you even make the sperm, okay? When does you ejaculate, your or your partner ejaculate, those sperm rely on fructose, okay? So that's another way, you know, fructose demonized, demonized will give you fatty liver, even though those those rat studies were heavily sort of skewed and flawed because they were only giving them fructose they were giving them a lot of fructose and fructose doesn't almost never comes in in pure form in nature like that in such quantities you always get it with glucose you always get it with like if you okay in honey you don't get it with fiber with with fruit you get it with fiber so it's
00:30:09
chrisyzen
It does not have the same physiological effect when we consume it. Even sugar is 50% glucose and 50% fructose. right so that actually ah if If they use research like that with rats, they they don't they don't become overweight and diet diabetic unless they use ah a relatively high proportion of fat. and po in such very fats If you just get them just give the rats a sugar diet, not just fructose in tons and tons of fructose, they will they will actually like live normal lives and um they will not develop a lot of metabolic problems unless there's other poison in in their food, which there is loads of. If you look at in my book, I and talk about this a bit more. but
00:30:54
chrisyzen
If you look at like the standard lab child, you can just Google that, see what garbage, soybean oil, fish meal, alfalfa meal, it's just disgusting poison that these animals are eating, right? But if you give them just sugar and coconut oil and some kind of cleaner source of protein, those rats will live full

Anti-Aging Through Hormone Balance

00:31:17
chrisyzen
normal lives. They might even outlive the, the probably will outlive lab rats on the standard child, okay? um Yeah, so and and with women That's another that's another thing, you know, you need the women have gonads as well they also need um Glucose to to produce progesterone, you know so That is another that is a big stressor that folks are
00:31:51
chrisyzen
sort of, they're kind of handicapping themselves, right? So let's say, let's pretend you, you believe me, or you read the book and you see kind of a bit more of the research and the full rationale behind the stuff. Let's say you don't do intermittent fasting, you don't stress yourself with too much exercise, psychologically stress is somewhat under wraps, under control. Then, you know, when you're eating carbohydrates and you're not fasting and starving yourself and stuff like that, then at that point,
00:32:22
chrisyzen
All you have to do is use supplements that block the conversion of e ah you know but ah basically block aromatization of androgens, right? So some kind of aromatase inhibitor.
00:32:43
chrisyzen
you can then boost the androgenic pathway in men without fear for it become the testosterone being converted into estrogen, which will cause sexual dysfunction in men and women if there's a very high estrogen to progesterone ratio. And in women, you do a similar thing and you support progesterone production. It is really that simple.
00:33:09
chrisyzen
And it can be done with over the counter or overthe-count supplements. And not only is it beneficial for sexual function, but it's really beneficial for slowing down the aging process because again, these androgens and and progesterone and these kind of protective hormones, pregnant alone, DHEA, they oppose the degenerative effects of cortisol and they basically lower stress. You can feel them lowering your stress, right? And this is this is probably the doing this right, I believe at least, is the closest thing we have to
00:33:52
chrisyzen
an anti-aging strategy, not where not not just longevity, where we slow down the the damaging processes, but where we actually could age backwards because you were restoring protective hormone levels from when you were, you know, 20, 30, whatever. Nobody really knows because we we, who of us is checking what our hormones were like when we were 20 or 30. So we can approximate those levels. And again, those things will keep the stress hormones under wraps. And that is it. It is that simple.
00:34:30
chrisyzen
and it's very easy to implement and if you would like to learn more about that you can book a free metabolic function assessment session with me you can discuss some of your health goals health challenges and I can show you how my program the live longer formula can help you achieve them hopefully even exceed them you know And this this hormone balancing stuff that I do, I genuinely believe this is better than a lot of, quote unquote, hormone specialists out there doing things, like giving women and estrogenic herbs and resveratrol and poisons. You know, estrogen has no place in anybody's supplementation routine. These doctors that are ah prescribing it, they're poisoning these women. It's this sickening, disgusting, right?
00:35:20
chrisyzen
So a lot of these hormone experts out there are actually damaging people. And I have a client that started working with recently, she she was taking some some product with estrogen for like, I don't know, almost 20 years, on and off, not all the time. And they say it's supposed to prevent osteoporosis and stuff like that. Her osteoporosis only has gotten worse over the years, you know. So straight up, this stuff is the a lot of what's being done out there is horrifically bad, horrifically bad.

Addressing Health Misconceptions and Solutions

00:35:50
chrisyzen
because they don't even understand the fact that estrogen, you can never be deficient in estrogen. Just because the blood level is low in a woman after me menopause does not mean she's estrogen deficient because every single cell in the body makes can make estrogen because every cell in the body, especially the fatty tissue, has the aromatase enzyme.
