Introduction and Mission

00:00:10
Speaker
G'day, I'm Trent Maxwell.
00:00:11
Speaker
And I'm Lee Mason.
00:00:13
Speaker
And we want to welcome you to our Live, Learn, Survive podcast.
00:00:15
Speaker
Since 2018, Lee and I travel the globe and met face-to-face with over 30,000 children in six countries across three continents.
00:00:21
Speaker
We've created a series of award-winning children's books, a global online education program, and are founders of the Live, Learn, Survive charity, all focused on teaching children and young adults life skills, know how to help themselves, but help others too.
00:00:33
Speaker
We're on a mission to spread awareness about fire and water safety and first aid education to inspire the next generation of first responders.
00:00:41
Speaker
So join us for the next half an hour for some fun, inspiration and kindness and we'll try and learn something too.
00:00:47
Speaker
How are you this week, Lee?
00:00:48
Speaker
Welcome aboard.
00:00:51
Speaker
Maxie, I am here.
00:00:53
Speaker
I am in the office.

Weekly Catch-Up

00:00:55
Speaker
You are in Sydney.
00:00:56
Speaker
I'm back in Sydney.
00:00:57
Speaker
It's been a big week.
00:00:58
Speaker
You've been in the skies this week.
00:01:00
Speaker
Yes, I have.
00:01:01
Speaker
And it's been...
00:01:04
Speaker
You know what we say every week, they're busy, they're getting busier.
00:01:07
Speaker
Look, just, you know, we just, we just hanging on.
00:01:10
Speaker
We're just hanging on and riding the wave.
00:01:12
Speaker
Hanging on by one fingertip.
00:01:13
Speaker
Yes.
00:01:14
Speaker
So, you know, it's, it's been an incredible week, an incredibly proud week, and we're going to be able to tell everyone all about it.
00:01:22
Speaker
Yeah, it's very exciting.
00:01:23
Speaker
So let's get into it.

Motivational Insights

00:01:26
Speaker
First things first, Lee, is the quote.
00:01:28
Speaker
Go for it, Maxie.
00:01:29
Speaker
This is very appropriate this week.
00:01:31
Speaker
Yep, so the quote this week for everyone out there, it always seems impossible until it's done.
00:01:39
Speaker
And that's true.
00:01:40
Speaker
Very true.
00:01:41
Speaker
Tell you what, we're skidding in by the skin of our teeth on so many things at the minute, but we're getting it done and that's all that matters.
00:01:52
Speaker
It's all that matters.
00:01:53
Speaker
Yeah, there's so much to cover.
00:01:54
Speaker
So we'll go straight into the good news and run back to kindness.
00:01:57
Speaker
Exactly.
00:01:58
Speaker
And we can tell everyone what has been happening.
00:02:01
Speaker
Yes, go for it, Maxie.

Parliament Experience

00:02:10
Speaker
Yes, plenty of good news this week, Lee.
00:02:12
Speaker
We'll kick it off with how good Tuesday was.
00:02:18
Speaker
What a day.
00:02:21
Speaker
to explain to people how this came about i had a meeting about would have only been what three weeks ago maxi i went into the city and i had a meeting um with a gentleman who has a very official title the honorable mr curtis pitt who is the speaker of the legislative legislative assembly for queensland parliament which basically um
00:02:45
Speaker
I actually learned this week, he actually takes responsibility for the house physically as well as literally.
00:02:53
Speaker
He looks after everything.
00:02:55
Speaker
Exactly.
00:02:55
Speaker
So incredibly important man, but more importantly now, an incredibly kind man.
00:03:02
Speaker
So gave us this opportunity to hold on Tuesday.
00:03:07
Speaker
what they call is a showcase and we got the opportunity to showcase Live, Learn, Survive and the work we do to every single member of parliament in Queensland and they were all invited to meet us.
00:03:23
Speaker
Yeah.
00:03:25
Speaker
It was really cool to step foot into that building.
00:03:28
Speaker
Obviously, it's a special place.
00:03:29
Speaker
A lot of decisions get made and a lot of topics get brought up.
00:03:33
Speaker
And the fact that we got to set up in the Premier's room and, you know, you look around the room and you see all the portraits of old Premiers and, you know, it's just a special place.
00:03:44
Speaker
You know, it's weird to say special, but it was a special place because, you know, there's a lot going on behind the scenes to keep the country and the state running.
00:03:52
Speaker
Yeah.
00:03:52
Speaker
And the fact that we had...
00:03:54
Speaker
MPs come in to see what Live, Learn, Survive was all about.
00:03:57
Speaker
It was very exciting and also,
00:04:00
Speaker
appreciated all the mps that did come in that gave myself andrew and jack the time to to learn and to understand what what we do and and what our mission and goals are so yeah yeah and like you say like this room too um there's a little um there's a few snippets on social media but it's got portraits of all the premiers um of all the you know the the people that have you know made really important decisions so there's
00:04:29
Speaker
so much history in that room.
00:04:31
Speaker
And in true Live Learn Survive style, we turn up with all our toys and then you start chucking throw bag around.
00:04:37
Speaker
Which is just great.
00:04:39
Speaker
It's like, you know.
00:04:40
Speaker
Got the MPs tied up in a rescue tube and it's like, this is what we do, people.
00:04:46
Speaker
Yeah, it was really good.
00:04:47
Speaker
And the fact that a number of MPs have pretty much, you know, don't want to get too ahead of ourselves that we're locked in, but a lot of the MPs that did come in kind of matched what the Honourable Mr Speaker Curtis Pitt has done is...
00:05:03
Speaker
donated or supported or sponsored five schools in his electorate, which is up near Cairns.
00:05:08
Speaker
So a lot of the MPs that came in got to try and follow suit.
00:05:12
Speaker
So it's amazing for us to be able to have the opportunity to go to some of these areas in Queensland to be able to educate kids and young adults around water safety, fire safety, first aid and resilience.
00:05:22
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:05:23
Speaker
Conversations have been started.
00:05:25
Speaker
Exactly right.
00:05:26
Speaker
And yeah, you did absolutely an amazing job,

Stories and Collaborations

00:05:30
Speaker
Maxie.
00:05:30
Speaker
It was a fly in, fly out.
00:05:31
Speaker
You literally,
00:05:33
Speaker
hit the runway and we're in the fast car to Parliament House.
00:05:38
Speaker
Everything just ran so smoothly.
00:05:39
Speaker
And before you blinked, you were back on that runway and you were home in time for a cocoa and a... So I come off shift that morning and I reached straight from the fire station to the airport.
00:05:51
Speaker
The flight was on time.
00:05:53
Speaker
Andrew picked me up from the airport.
00:05:55
Speaker
Everything ran so smoothly.
00:05:56
Speaker
There was no traffic.
00:05:58
Speaker
We set up, we bumped in and we did a great talk.
00:06:01
Speaker
And sometimes as people that listen to the podcast from week to week, you do hear we do have some horror stories, some unfortunate events when it comes to traveling.
00:06:09
Speaker
Yes.
00:06:09
Speaker
But it was to get in there was smooth.
00:06:12
Speaker
Getting home, which is a different story.
00:06:14
Speaker
I'll talk about that in the unfortunate event.
00:06:17
Speaker
But I'm sure you've got a great unfortunate event this week, Lee.
00:06:20
Speaker
Oh, absolutely.
00:06:21
Speaker
Cracker.
00:06:22
Speaker
So, yeah.
00:06:23
Speaker
So thank you, Virgin, for the 10 minutes early arrival.
00:06:28
Speaker
That 10 minutes was very important.
00:06:30
Speaker
Thank you.
00:06:31
Speaker
And just before we go into other things, I did a really cool podcast yesterday.
00:06:37
Speaker
It's called Little Fish.
00:06:38
Speaker
And basically, they're one of the leading podcasts.
00:06:41
Speaker
Yeah.
00:06:42
Speaker
in Australia.
00:06:44
Speaker
And it was exciting to want to learn the Live Land Survive story, a little bit of the story about how I've become a lifeguard and gone to the fireys.
00:06:51
Speaker
And yeah, it was really cool to collaborate with them.
00:06:55
Speaker
So in the future, when that does come out, I'll share it across things and we can get little snippets of
00:07:01
Speaker
learning more about Live, Learn, Survive for everyone out there that does follow.
00:07:04
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:07:05
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:07:06
Speaker
Good job, Maxie.
00:07:07
Speaker
It's been a busy week talking the talk.
00:07:09
Speaker
Have you got some good news stories?
00:07:11
Speaker
Yeah, no, I found a nice little story online.
00:07:16
Speaker
So basically a 92-year-old man started living his healthy lifestyle in his 70s.
00:07:27
Speaker
So if you think that, you know, whatever age you are and you think you've left whatever it is too late, this is the story for you.
00:07:34
Speaker
So he just broke the Grand Canyon world record.
00:07:37
Speaker
So he basically at 76, he started to think he needed to get his act together.
00:07:43
Speaker
He changed his diet.
00:07:44
Speaker
He drank more water and walked daily.
00:07:47
Speaker
And then he visited, I'm going to say this wrong, Machu Picchu, and then Mount Everest Base Camp, and then the Grand Canyon.
00:07:59
Speaker
Sadly, his wife passed away.
00:08:00
Speaker
They did a lot of traveling together.
00:08:02
Speaker
But then as part of his healing process, he decided to start traveling again.
00:08:08
Speaker
And this is when he tried to beat the world record for the oldest person across the Grand Canyon.
00:08:14
Speaker
So in January 2023,
00:08:16
Speaker
He began training by taking eight mile walks daily.
00:08:23
Speaker
And then he broke the record.
00:08:25
Speaker
And the thing is, he said, the thing is it healed him.
00:08:29
Speaker
He stayed focused.
00:08:30
Speaker
He finished the hike.
00:08:32
Speaker
He met awesome, awesome people on the way around.
00:08:36
Speaker
But the most important thing is at 76 years old,
00:08:40
Speaker
He changed his life by being healthy.
00:08:43
Speaker
That's awesome.
00:08:44
Speaker
So if you think you're in your 30s and you maybe left it a bit in your 40s, in your 50s, take it.
00:08:51
Speaker
You know, Mr. Alfredo Borodio is now 92.
00:08:55
Speaker
You can change it.
00:08:57
Speaker
So if you were thinking, you know, you left it too late,
00:09:02
Speaker
Alfredo told us we didn't.
00:09:04
Speaker
We didn't.
00:09:05
Speaker
It could be a, whatever you call it, a world record thingy, that book.
00:09:11
Speaker
Yes, that one.
00:09:12
Speaker
Could be inside of you.
00:09:13
Speaker
So, yeah, there you go.
00:09:15
Speaker
Good news story.
00:09:16
Speaker
Never too late.
00:09:17
Speaker
Thank you.
00:09:17
Speaker
Thank you.
00:09:18
Speaker
All right.
00:09:19
Speaker
What have we got next, Maxie?
00:09:20
Speaker
Job of the week.
00:09:22
Speaker
All right.
00:09:31
Speaker
Yes, it's been quite steady at the fire station and quite steady.

Updates and Challenges

00:09:35
Speaker
The lifeguards, they've just finished filming Bondi Rescue.
00:09:38
Speaker
So it's officially the busy season or busy period.
00:09:42
Speaker
It's kind of over.
00:09:43
Speaker
Everyone's back at work.
00:09:44
Speaker
Everyone's back at school.
00:09:45
Speaker
People are traveling back home to the other countries.
00:09:48
Speaker
We've still got another couple of weeks of summer left in Australia.
00:09:51
Speaker
But after that, you know, it's starting to wind down a little bit.
00:09:55
Speaker
So the lifeguards hasn't been too, too crazy.
00:09:58
Speaker
We've got a couple of shifts next week.
00:10:00
Speaker
Yeah.
00:10:00
Speaker
And the fire has been steady.
00:10:01
Speaker
So it's been good.
00:10:02
Speaker
When we're steady, it means no one's having an unfortunate event.
00:10:07
Speaker
Exactly.
00:10:08
Speaker
Exactly.
00:10:09
Speaker
And I think, you know what, you're right.
00:10:10
Speaker
People have been out for the summer.
00:10:12
Speaker
They've done the thing.
00:10:12
Speaker
They're starting to head back across and all the rest of that.
00:10:16
Speaker
And it's, you know, been been such a busy summer.
00:10:22
Speaker
And like you say, when it's steady and, you know, then it's better.
00:10:28
Speaker
And I was watching Ambulance last night.
00:10:30
Speaker
I saw the work of our lovely friend Ben.
00:10:33
Speaker
Ben King.
00:10:34
Speaker
Yeah, I was watching that last night.
00:10:36
Speaker
So he's obviously switched from the beach to the Ambo.
00:10:39
Speaker
So good on you, Ben.
00:10:41
Speaker
Good on you, Benny.
00:10:42
Speaker
So, yeah.
00:10:42
Speaker
And also, Maxie, I was just thinking before we go any further,
00:10:47
Speaker
Who are you catching up with today?
00:10:48
Speaker
That's great news.
00:10:49
Speaker
Oh, yeah, that is great news.
00:10:51
Speaker
Yes.
00:10:52
Speaker
Rob, Polish Rob, Baltic Rescue Rob is in Bondi and I'm going to catch up with him this afternoon and show him around the lifeguard tower.
00:11:01
Speaker
And we're going to have a bit of a chat and get some photos.
00:11:04
Speaker
And yeah, so the old school squad member, we don't really call it the squad anymore, but the Skills for Life member.
00:11:13
Speaker
Rob is in Bondi and we're going to catch up with him.
00:11:17
Speaker
And you know what?
00:11:17
Speaker
Probably Rob's been mentioned on this podcast more than anybody because at the end of it, we gauge how long because we know Rob times his runs for this.
00:11:25
Speaker
So I want to know when you're going to go running together.
00:11:28
Speaker
Yeah, well, maybe not today because it's raining, unfortunately.
00:11:31
Speaker
It's raining today.
00:11:32
Speaker
But, yeah, when I do see him, hopefully...
00:11:36
Speaker
He has a good time.
00:11:37
Speaker
I show him around the lifeguard tower, take him for a ride on the bike and have a bit of fun.
00:11:40
Speaker
So it'll be good to see him.
00:11:41
Speaker
And I get to meet him in a couple of weeks, which is awesome.
00:11:44
Speaker
We both get to, and we're doing a podcast with him in a couple of weeks as well.
00:11:48
Speaker
We are.
00:11:48
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:11:49
Speaker
All right.
00:11:49
Speaker
Sorry.
00:11:50
Speaker
I just remembered that bit.
00:11:51
Speaker
We're going a bit all over the shop today.
00:11:53
Speaker
Back to the plan, Maxie.
00:11:54
Speaker
Sorry.
00:11:54
Speaker
Back to the plan.
00:11:55
Speaker
So unfortunate event.

Unexpected Events

00:12:03
Speaker
I'll let you kick it off, Leigh.
00:12:04
Speaker
Well, did I call this the ultimate unfortunate event?
00:12:09
Speaker
I think it's going to be a long time until we top this one, Maxie.
00:12:14
Speaker
A long time.
00:12:15
Speaker
So, you know, I had my most amazing trip on Hamilton Island and it was just spectacular.
00:12:22
Speaker
Came home feeling a million dollars, but came home with a little friend.
00:12:30
Speaker
COVID.
00:12:32
Speaker
COVID?
00:12:33
Speaker
You can't say the C word anymore.
00:12:36
Speaker
It's still around, my friend.
00:12:37
Speaker
It's lurking in corners when you don't expect it.
00:12:42
Speaker
And tried desperately to race the clock and get well.
00:12:49
Speaker
To the parliament event?
00:12:51
Speaker
So you had to go to Parliament.
00:12:53
Speaker
Probably the greatest, you know, not we've had many, many great things, but the most prestigious opportunity we had to speak to people about what we do.
00:13:04
Speaker
And I left you flying so low.
00:13:06
Speaker
And you know what?
00:13:08
Speaker
When we first heard the news that you were going to have to maybe postpone or cancel the event,
00:13:14
Speaker
on the Sunday morning, I was, you know, thinking, you know, health is wealth, you know, we need to focus on the February 29th event.
00:13:21
Speaker
Yeah.
00:13:22
Speaker
You know, there's always maybe next time we can showcase in parliament.
00:13:25
Speaker
It's kind of like that mindset.
00:13:27
Speaker
And then, you know, we're both disappointed because, you know, we've worked so hard to get to the right room and finally we're in the right room and you're sick.
00:13:37
Speaker
And we kind of said, all right, well, let's postpone it.
00:13:40
Speaker
And then,
00:13:42
Speaker
We actually messaged or you messaged Curtis to say, look, Mr Speaker to change it.
00:13:48
Speaker
And he actually said, no, we have maybe a problem.
00:13:51
Speaker
We don't have a problem.
00:13:52
Speaker
He said, no, you know what?
00:13:54
Speaker
Still come up.
00:13:54
Speaker
I'll give you a hand.
00:13:55
Speaker
I'll take two hours out of my day to make sure that you're comfortable and you're, you know, you looked after.
00:14:00
Speaker
So we decided there and then Sunday evening that I was still going to fly business as usual.
00:14:08
Speaker
We just shuffled a few things around.
00:14:10
Speaker
Big shout out to Andrew, your husband.
00:14:12
Speaker
And Jackie, Jacqueline, for coming along and helping out.
00:14:16
Speaker
Stepping in.
00:14:17
Speaker
And Curtis for making me feel very welcome as well and encouraging people in his speech in Parliament to get as many MPs into the room as possible.
00:14:26
Speaker
And I think we had about 20 to 25 come through from all parts of Queensland, which is great.
00:14:32
Speaker
And, yeah, it was an unfortunate event, but the positive thing was is we know
00:14:38
Speaker
that you were working behind the scenes, Lee, making sure all the logistics was running smoothly.
00:14:42
Speaker
And it was a very successful day.
00:14:45
Speaker
And, you know,
00:14:46
Speaker
what comes from that is the power of the team.
00:14:49
Speaker
Yes.
00:14:49
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:50
Speaker
But it was like, whoa, that thing, you know, what did Top Gun say?
00:14:53
Speaker
You never leave your wingman, Maxie.
00:14:55
Speaker
It was like, oh, never.
00:14:57
Speaker
Oh, anyway, we got through it.
00:15:00
Speaker
From a negative situation, we turned it into a positive.
00:15:03
Speaker
And now we can fully, primarily focus on the February 29th event.
00:15:07
Speaker
So it'll be great.
00:15:08
Speaker
Which is very, very close now.
00:15:10
Speaker
So, yes.
00:15:11
Speaker
So that was my, what about you?
00:15:14
Speaker
Yeah.
00:15:15
Speaker
So mine's not too bad, not as bad as that, but, um, obviously I think me and you planned to have maybe lunch or a meeting after parliament if, if everything was running

Travel and Humor

00:15:27
Speaker
smoothly.
00:15:27
Speaker
So obviously that wasn't the case.
00:15:28
Speaker
And Andrew's a busy man.
00:15:29
Speaker
He had to get back to work and which is cool.
00:15:32
Speaker
I had to get dropped off at the airport earlier.
00:15:34
Speaker
So getting dropped off at the airport earlier, my fly was at six.
00:15:38
Speaker
Uh, I got to the airport at three or two 33.
00:15:43
Speaker
I went straight to the desk and asked if I can move a flight forward.
00:15:46
Speaker
Yes.
00:15:47
Speaker
Mr. Maxwell, no worries.
00:15:48
Speaker
There's a flight at five o'clock.
00:15:50
Speaker
Oh, sweet.
00:15:51
Speaker
So as I'm changing the flight, I look on the board and I see that the five o'clock flights pushed back to 545.
00:15:57
Speaker
So I'm like, oh, so I'm flying early, but realistically it's only 15, 20 minutes earlier.
00:16:03
Speaker
But it gets funnier because as I'm watching the board, my original flight at 6.05 hasn't changed, not delayed, nothing.
00:16:11
Speaker
Everything was running smoothly.
00:16:12
Speaker
And the flight that I changed to an hour and a half before was delayed till 6.30.
00:16:18
Speaker
So the flight that initially I should have been on left 25 minutes before I flew out of Brisbane.
00:16:27
Speaker
That's not ideal.
00:16:27
Speaker
And the unfortunate event in that is there was a number of people from, you know,
00:16:33
Speaker
you know what Americans like, they tell you where they're from.
00:16:35
Speaker
There was a few Americans on the plane complaining that to get a connecting international flight in Sydney, which they already missed.
00:16:44
Speaker
Yes.
00:16:45
Speaker
But I always think to people, people that fly so close, domestic flights so close to an international flight, you've got to give yourself, this is where my anxiety sets in.
00:16:52
Speaker
You need to give yourself at least four or five hours.
00:16:54
Speaker
Or we don't do that, do we, Maxie?
00:16:55
Speaker
When we travel, we like to be there early.
00:16:57
Speaker
You need to give yourself two hours, two hours of delays, and you need to give yourself two hours of customs and check-in.
00:17:03
Speaker
So it's four or five hours minimum.
00:17:04
Speaker
But these guys thinking half an hour to an hour.
00:17:07
Speaker
No, it's not ideal.
00:17:08
Speaker
No, no, no.
00:17:08
Speaker
You can't do that, people.
00:17:10
Speaker
Give yourself plenty of time.
00:17:12
Speaker
That's why we can travel together, Maxi, because we're both the early people.
00:17:15
Speaker
Yeah, have to be early.
00:17:17
Speaker
Have to be early.
00:17:17
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:17:18
Speaker
But yeah, so dad jokes.
00:17:21
Speaker
We're through it.
00:17:23
Speaker
Okay, let's go on.
00:17:24
Speaker
We're off over that.
00:17:27
Speaker
All right.
00:17:27
Speaker
What have you got for us?
00:17:28
Speaker
Okay, I've got one.
00:17:30
Speaker
You'll like this one.
00:17:30
Speaker
It's on brand for you.
00:17:32
Speaker
Did you hear about the smoke detector that went off at the monastery?
00:17:37
Speaker
No, I didn't hear what happened.
00:17:39
Speaker
It turned out it was just a fryer drill.
00:17:48
Speaker
You can take that to the boys of Sea Platoon with love from me.
00:17:52
Speaker
Okay, what have you got for me?
00:17:55
Speaker
Did you hear that laughing too loudly is illegal in Hawaii?
00:18:00
Speaker
Oh, no, I didn't.
00:18:01
Speaker
Why?
00:18:02
Speaker
They only permit a low-ha.
00:18:07
Speaker
Oh.
00:18:12
Speaker
A low-ha-ha.
00:18:14
Speaker
Oh, okay.
00:18:15
Speaker
Very good.
00:18:15
Speaker
Very good.
00:18:17
Speaker
And next one for you then, Maxie.
00:18:19
Speaker
What kind of coffee does the Godfather drink?
00:18:24
Speaker
Piccolo.
00:18:25
Speaker
No.
00:18:26
Speaker
An Al Pacino.
00:18:32
Speaker
What a man Al Pacino is.
00:18:33
Speaker
Yay, that's a cracker.
00:18:36
Speaker
Last one.
00:18:37
Speaker
My dream job, Lee, is to clean mirrors.
00:18:40
Speaker
Oh, really?
00:18:41
Speaker
Okay.
00:18:42
Speaker
Because I can really see myself doing that.
00:18:46
Speaker
Every week they're getting worse and worse and worse and worse.
00:18:54
Speaker
Give the people what they want.
00:18:56
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:18:57
Speaker
Right.
00:18:58
Speaker
Okay.
00:18:58
Speaker
So moving on.
00:18:59
Speaker
What have we got now, Maxie?
00:19:00
Speaker
What are we on to now?

Safety and Education

00:19:03
Speaker
tip of the week yes tip of the week this week lee is river safety i was very fortunate enough to film this video about two months ago with ben uh out at liverpool at georgia's river
00:19:20
Speaker
It's a very important water safety message.
00:19:23
Speaker
So talk about the hidden dangers, talk about how to use life-saving equipment.
00:19:28
Speaker
And yeah, it's a good video.
00:19:30
Speaker
So people that are part of the Live, Learn, Survive Skills for Life program, you'll be able to see this video as you go through from week to week, the videos that we have.
00:19:40
Speaker
Amazing.
00:19:40
Speaker
And thanks so much for Ben for helping us out with that.
00:19:45
Speaker
And great location.
00:19:46
Speaker
I know I keep saying it, but it is a brilliant location.
00:19:49
Speaker
Yeah.
00:19:50
Speaker
Had all the hidden dangers.
00:19:51
Speaker
They had slips, trips and falls.
00:19:52
Speaker
You had the bridge, you had murky water, you had the currents.
00:19:56
Speaker
So yeah, it was really, really interesting.
00:19:58
Speaker
And a lot of people don't realise that more people drown in Australia inland than they do on the coast.
00:20:02
Speaker
So we're really trying to push that number.
00:20:05
Speaker
down across across australia and across the world as well that um inland water tragedies do happen so you just need to be safe around any sort of water and um i'll be pinning the river safety video to instagram uh for people to to have a watch and have a look as well as the rip video good job team amazing well done
00:20:29
Speaker
While we're there, the Spotify playlist for Live and Survive due to copyright reasons on YouTube.
00:20:35
Speaker
We can't play the songs anymore, unfortunately.
00:20:36
Speaker
I just remembered we're videoing this.
00:20:38
Speaker
I've been slooping my coffee and everything.
00:20:39
Speaker
Yeah, it's all good.
00:20:40
Speaker
It's all part of it.
00:20:43
Speaker
It's Life is a Highway by Tom Cochran.
00:20:46
Speaker
I think it's a great song.
00:20:47
Speaker
Life is a Highway.
00:20:49
Speaker
Sure is, mate.
00:20:50
Speaker
Oh, we're in the fast lane at the minute.
00:20:52
Speaker
We're in the fast lane.
00:20:53
Speaker
Exactly right.
00:20:54
Speaker
So I hope you all enjoyed that in the Spotify playlist.
00:20:58
Speaker
And yeah, just enjoy, get the tunes on, feel good, happy, go lucky, pump up songs.
00:21:05
Speaker
So enjoy.
00:21:06
Speaker
Excellent.
00:21:07
Speaker
Excellent.
00:21:08
Speaker
Right.
00:21:08
Speaker
Okay then.
00:21:09
Speaker
So random fact time.
00:21:19
Speaker
So we're both thinking alike here, Lee.
00:21:21
Speaker
My facts this week is about Parliament in general.
00:21:25
Speaker
And you've got a couple of facts about Queensland Parliament.
00:21:29
Speaker
Yeah, the beautiful Parliament House.
00:21:31
Speaker
So you go first.
00:21:32
Speaker
Okay, I've just got a couple here.
00:21:33
Speaker
So the British Parliament's Palace of Westminster has over a thousand rooms.
00:21:40
Speaker
Wow.
00:21:41
Speaker
The word Parliament comes from the French word parlor, which means to talk.
00:21:49
Speaker
The longest continuously operating parliament is in Iceland, dating back to 930 AD.
00:21:55
Speaker
Wow.
00:21:55
Speaker
This is an interesting one.
00:21:58
Speaker
The Parliament of New Zealand has one of the highest proportions of women members in the world, reaching nearly 50% in recent years.
00:22:06
Speaker
Go New Zealand, just quietly.
00:22:09
Speaker
This one I didn't realise.
00:22:10
Speaker
This one's a pretty big one.
00:22:11
Speaker
The Parliament of India is the largest in the world with over 790 members.
00:22:15
Speaker
Wow.
00:22:18
Speaker
Wow, that's a lot.
00:22:22
Speaker
And here we go.
00:22:23
Speaker
The oldest parliament in the Americas is the Parliament of Bermuda, established in 1620.
00:22:29
Speaker
There you go.
00:22:34
Speaker
It's pretty cool, eh?
00:22:36
Speaker
Very cool.
00:22:37
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:37
Speaker
What are some of your facts?
00:22:39
Speaker
Well, I went to the building that we were in.
00:22:41
Speaker
We were talking about...
00:22:43
Speaker
you know, the history and, you know, when you step in a building that has got so much history as that.
00:22:50
Speaker
And granted, as you're just talking about some of the parliaments and how old they are, Australia in comparison is very, very young.
00:22:59
Speaker
But as buildings go in Brisbane, Parliament House is absolutely beautiful.
00:23:04
Speaker
And I just thought, you know, who drew it?
00:23:08
Speaker
Who designed it?
00:23:09
Speaker
This was where I went.
00:23:10
Speaker
So it was basically...
00:23:12
Speaker
It was designed by a gentleman called Charles Tiffin, who was the architect.
00:23:19
Speaker
And he did a lot of other buildings in and around and lighthouses and land office and lots of things different like this.
00:23:29
Speaker
But interestingly, and I thought this is very, a cool little connection, Maxie.
00:23:37
Speaker
He was from Newcastle-upon-Towne in the UK, where we have done many, many work.
00:23:45
Speaker
We are ambassadors for South Shields.
00:23:47
Speaker
and we've stood and thrown you underneath the time bridge basically for the fire is to rescue you out so i thought that was like really really cool um obviously he came out to australia he was born in the 1800s came out to australia he'd worked on many many different um projects and um made brisbane his home and um what an absolutely beautiful building and um
00:24:13
Speaker
I thought it was very appropriate that our lovely friend in South Shields will be thrilled to know he's a Geordie.
00:24:18
Speaker
There you go.
00:24:20
Speaker
How cool is that?
00:24:20
Speaker
That's very cool.
00:24:21
Speaker
It is a beautiful building walking around there, some of the old rooms and that.
00:24:24
Speaker
It's lovely.
00:24:25
Speaker
Oh, the bookcases.
00:24:27
Speaker
And you know when you can just go in a building and you can just smell the history?
00:24:32
Speaker
Yeah.
00:24:32
Speaker
The bookcases, it's just amazing.
00:24:35
Speaker
Just beautiful.
00:24:36
Speaker
And as I was looking up that research to find out who built it, and I thought, you know what, I'm going to go.
00:24:43
Speaker
There is so much that you can do to go and actually learn about this in your own city.
00:24:48
Speaker
And I thought, you know what, I'm going to go and spend a day and see if I can get into, you know, you can go in the gallery and you can watch and you can actually go on a tour.
00:24:57
Speaker
And I thought, yeah,
00:24:58
Speaker
These things are straight under our nose.
00:25:00
Speaker
And so often we walk past them and we never, you know, never like, like find out more about them.
00:25:08
Speaker
So I thought, you know what, I'm going to do that.
00:25:10
Speaker
I'm putting that on my list.
00:25:12
Speaker
Sounds good.
00:25:13
Speaker
There we go.
00:25:13
Speaker
Parliament and Parliament houses.
00:25:15
Speaker
So good random facts there, Maxie.
00:25:17
Speaker
So I'm right.

Community and Support

00:25:19
Speaker
Wins of the week.
00:25:19
Speaker
Wins of the week.
00:25:28
Speaker
Yeah, so wins of the week this week, Lee.
00:25:31
Speaker
Obviously...
00:25:32
Speaker
You know, we're starting to build momentum for the February 29th event.
00:25:36
Speaker
We had Mr Speaker talk about it in the Parliament House.
00:25:40
Speaker
We've got a number of tickets sold between the last podcast we've done.
00:25:44
Speaker
Yep, approximately 70 people I think now are going to be in the room, close to.
00:25:50
Speaker
The media wall that we've created, you've created, organised is great.
00:25:54
Speaker
We tested it out the other day.
00:25:56
Speaker
It looks great.
00:25:56
Speaker
Didn't it look fab?
00:25:57
Speaker
I was so happy.
00:25:57
Speaker
The blue with the little superhero emblem, it's awesome.
00:26:01
Speaker
And, yeah, it's just I think it's going to be a great evening.
00:26:05
Speaker
I'm looking forward to it.
00:26:07
Speaker
I know there'll be a fireside chat with me, so there's not as much stress as what you're probably feeling.
00:26:14
Speaker
But I think you will nail it.
00:26:16
Speaker
I think the people that are in that room are going to hear the story, and it's going to pull a few heartstrings, I reckon.
00:26:21
Speaker
I reckon it's going to be a nice evening, and hopefully we get
00:26:27
Speaker
we're already getting a lot of support, but getting even more support and people getting behind us and wanting to get involved even more deeply.
00:26:33
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:26:34
Speaker
We've been given some amazing gifts.
00:26:36
Speaker
You know, our amazing friends at Dyson have donated a supersonic hair dryer for us again.
00:26:44
Speaker
We've been gifted a $2,000 yoga retreat.
00:26:46
Speaker
Yeah.
00:26:48
Speaker
We've been gifted an incredible door prize from Sasha Drake, who is an amazing Brisbane designer.
00:26:58
Speaker
Our lawyers have got behind us.
00:27:01
Speaker
Mr Speaker has organised us.
00:27:03
Speaker
We've got some signed jerseys from
00:27:05
Speaker
the Brisbane Roar, the Queensland Firebirds, the Brisbane Bullets.
00:27:10
Speaker
And if we don't use all of these on the night, because it is our first event, we can save some of these things for fundraising in the future.
00:27:18
Speaker
And it's just been a really, really humbling week of fundraising.
00:27:25
Speaker
Feeling the love, really, the support starting to come in and the wave of people knowing that we're putting our necks on the line.
00:27:34
Speaker
And, you know, this is not, you know, this is not necessarily what we are, our first forte of what we're known for being good at.
00:27:43
Speaker
But you know what?
00:27:44
Speaker
We're being brave and having a go.
00:27:46
Speaker
And I reckon, you know, who dares wins.
00:27:49
Speaker
And whilst, yeah, I am very much feeling the pressure and, you know, not being well kind of adds to that when I step back out of it.
00:28:00
Speaker
And I look from the outside looking in, I think, you know what, we've got this.
00:28:04
Speaker
And I know that if there's two people that will make everyone in that room have a fun night, it's me and you.
00:28:10
Speaker
Supported by the incredible Jack.
00:28:12
Speaker
So it's going to be great.
00:28:13
Speaker
Very, very excited.
00:28:15
Speaker
I'm proud of us.
00:28:18
Speaker
Moving on to reflection.
00:28:28
Speaker
I actually said this to Mr Speaker the other day.
00:28:30
Speaker
I know this podcast has been a lot about parliament and bits and pieces, but the reflection is I remember probably four or five, maybe six years ago, we had a meeting with an MP in parliament house.
00:28:43
Speaker
And I knew how excited we were that day just to be even speaking to one person.
00:28:48
Speaker
And in that meeting, it was a good meeting, but we still walked away scratching our heads, there's so much more we needed to do and bits and pieces.
00:28:59
Speaker
but the fact that you can fast forward four or five years being not just in a little side workshop room we're in the actual premier's room we're showcasing live and survive we stuck to our guns and it's awesome to see how far we've come in four to five years and yeah like what's next ask her to be actually in the parliament you know in canberra who knows i just think it's a
00:29:27
Speaker
the sky's the ceiling, you just keep chipping away and things happen.
00:29:31
Speaker
You just gotta stay true to what you believe in and the mission of getting every kid the opportunity and young adult, kid and young adult to learn life skills and help themselves, but others too.
00:29:42
Speaker
But definitely on the right path.
00:29:46
Speaker
And doing the podcast yesterday with the little fish guys, I nearly had them in tears and goosebumps because
00:29:55
Speaker
It does impact a lot of people, some of the stuff that we are doing for the good.
00:30:00
Speaker
And I think it's exciting to see the support and the sponsorships and the helping hands of people around the world helping us achieve success.
00:30:14
Speaker
the goal of getting it into every kid's hands and we'll get there.
00:30:19
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely.
00:30:21
Speaker
Tongue twisted towards the end there, but it's just awesome to see, uh, the, the, the support's coming through and, um,
00:30:30
Speaker
you know, even if it's just one person, but the fact that a number of people have come forward to help us, it's, it's, it's very overwhelming and it's really cool.
00:30:37
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:30:39
Speaker
And you know what I say?
00:30:39
Speaker
It's so well said.
00:30:40
Speaker
And you know what it is when you, when you speak from the heart, it's, it's easy.
00:30:44
Speaker
You do just, it is, you know, and it's, it is, it's incredibly humbling.
00:30:51
Speaker
And, you know, so some people may, may look at, you know, from the outside in and think, oh, it's, it's kind of looked easily, easy.
00:30:59
Speaker
Man, it has not been easy.
00:31:01
Speaker
We have battled and fought for every conversation.
00:31:05
Speaker
And when Mr Speaker declared in the house today's little superheroes day, I literally got chills.
00:31:15
Speaker
It was like...
00:31:16
Speaker
Wow.
00:31:17
Speaker
Because like you say, I remember how excited we were that day.
00:31:20
Speaker
We had one meeting and we were in there for like 25 minutes and we were like, this is progress.
00:31:27
Speaker
And then yesterday we're spoken, we're spoken about living inspired spoken about in the house.
00:31:33
Speaker
That's cool.
00:31:34
Speaker
I will take that in, in a million times did make me feel cured in a moment.
00:31:41
Speaker
So it's been a good week.
00:31:43
Speaker
So that,
00:31:45
Speaker
Maxie leads perfectly into the rule.
00:31:47
Speaker
The rule this week.

Conclusion and Farewells

00:31:57
Speaker
Yeah, the rule this week is just simple.
00:31:59
Speaker
Two words, back yourself.
00:32:02
Speaker
Just back yourself.
00:32:04
Speaker
Just back yourself.
00:32:05
Speaker
Yeah, good days and bad days.
00:32:07
Speaker
But, you know, the good days do present and the forces that be make things happen, especially considering that we're going to be cancelling the Tuesday event on the Sunday.
00:32:20
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:20
Speaker
And the fact that, you know, people have come rallied in together to help us to make it happen.
00:32:26
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:27
Speaker
Things happen and just back yourself.
00:32:29
Speaker
Yeah, exactly.
00:32:30
Speaker
Well said, Maxie.
00:32:32
Speaker
And I don't think there can be, you know, a better way of saying that.
00:32:38
Speaker
Finishing the podcast on that.
00:32:39
Speaker
Exactly.
00:32:40
Speaker
And I think the next one is going to be the day after the event.
00:32:46
Speaker
So we're hoping, as with everything, there's been a little hiccup, but we're hoping we'll have a guest podcast next week.
00:32:55
Speaker
And then we are going to regroup together.
00:32:58
Speaker
next to each other next Friday to talk about what happened about we're going to talk it about last night and we'll tell everybody what happened about it so just a reminder to anyone that's listening if you are in Brisbane around the 29th of Feb the Hyatt Brisbane jump online Humanitix get your tickets come along to a great evening fundraising event creating little superheroes
00:33:24
Speaker
Yep.
00:33:24
Speaker
And yeah, it's going to be a fun, fun night and tickets are in the links in all of our bios.
00:33:31
Speaker
And it's going to hopefully raise a lot of good stuff to raise funds for schools and do stuff for kids.
00:33:39
Speaker
So very, very exciting.
00:33:41
Speaker
So exactly, you know, this time this is going to go out this Friday, which is tomorrow.
00:33:50
Speaker
So two weeks is now, Maxie.
