Introduction and Mission

00:00:08
Speaker
G'day, I'm Trent Maxwell.
00:00:10
Speaker
And I'm Lee Mason.
00:00:11
Speaker
We want to welcome you to our Live, Learn, Survive podcast.
00:00:13
Speaker
Since 2018, Lee and I have traveled the globe, met face-to-face with 34,000 children in six countries across three continents.
00:00:20
Speaker
We created a series of awarding children's books, a global online education program, and are founders of the Live, Learn, Survive charity,
00:00:26
Speaker
all focused on teaching children and young adults' life skills that will not only help themselves but help others too.
00:00:31
Speaker
We're on a mission to spread awareness about fire, water and first aid education to inspire the next generation of first responders.

Upcoming Holiday Excitement

00:00:37
Speaker
So join us for the next half an hour with some fun, inspiration and kindness and we'll try and learn something too.
00:00:42
Speaker
How are you this week, Lee?
00:00:44
Speaker
Welcome aboard, nearly holiday time.
00:00:47
Speaker
Maxie, this is my last job.
00:00:51
Speaker
and I'm breaking up.
00:00:52
Speaker
It's break-up day.
00:00:53
Speaker
Going on a little holiday, and I am excited.
00:00:57
Speaker
Out of a 1 to 10, I think I'm about a...
00:01:01
Speaker
28.
00:01:01
Speaker
That's awesome.
00:01:02
Speaker
I'm that excited.
00:01:04
Speaker
Well deserved, Craig.
00:01:05
Speaker
It's been a big couple of weeks and I know it's been in your calendar.
00:01:09
Speaker
Once you go, every year, I think it's the third year in a row, fourth year in a row you've gone.
00:01:13
Speaker
It is.
00:01:15
Speaker
So it's exciting that you're heading back there, Hamilton Island, beautiful part of the world.
00:01:19
Speaker
Beautiful part of the world.
00:01:20
Speaker
So, yeah, nice to just get a few days under a palm tree before it's a nice time of year to just
00:01:28
Speaker
like you know just a little reflect and everyone's starting to get into the crazy time and it's just like you know it's that little pause before the festivities so it's a really nice time to go and um not even the cycling on the horizon remember last year i didn't get there you know so um yeah very excited i've just got to throw everything into my bag and it's um
00:01:55
Speaker
The easiest place in the world to pack for.
00:01:57
Speaker
Topps, press, flip-flops.
00:02:01
Speaker
Easy, easy.
00:02:02
Speaker
That's the go.
00:02:03
Speaker
So too easy.
00:02:05
Speaker
So, yeah, happy, happy,

Optimism and Positive Energy

00:02:08
Speaker
happy.
00:02:08
Speaker
So start us with the quote, Maxi.
00:02:12
Speaker
Yeah, so the quote this week, Lee, is optimism is happiness magnet.
00:02:16
Speaker
If you stay positive, good things and good people will be drawn to you.
00:02:20
Speaker
Excellent.
00:02:21
Speaker
Love it, love it, love it.
00:02:23
Speaker
So, you know, it is good energy attracts.
00:02:26
Speaker
You can't not, you know, someone says hello to you, makes you smile.
00:02:32
Speaker
You know, good stuff attracts other good stuff.
00:02:35
Speaker
Yeah, 100%.
00:02:37
Speaker
You know.
00:02:37
Speaker
I totally agree with that quote.
00:02:39
Speaker
It's a great quote.
00:02:40
Speaker
And I'm a big believer once you change your mindset and you surround yourself with good, like-minded, kind people, good things start to happen.
00:02:47
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:02:48
Speaker
So it's a great quote.
00:02:50
Speaker
And, you know, and it's like people, you can tell at the minute, people are tired, people are starting to get to the end of the year.
00:02:58
Speaker
It's just, you know, and it's like, if you can just, you know, hold you, you know, we're nearly there, people hang on in there.
00:03:05
Speaker
And, you know, it's hopefully a lot of people, not everybody, a lot of people get a little break.
00:03:15
Speaker
and, you know, much needed time of the year.
00:03:19
Speaker
So good stuff, Maxie.
00:03:21
Speaker
So heaps of good news.
00:03:24
Speaker
Yes, heaps of good news.
00:03:26
Speaker
Yeah.
00:03:33
Speaker
Yeah, I've got a list of things here.
00:03:35
Speaker
Yes.

Apology and Busy Schedule

00:03:37
Speaker
Okay, so first things first, Newcastle last week, apologies to our weekly listeners.
00:03:42
Speaker
We unfortunately didn't have time last week to record a podcast.
00:03:47
Speaker
We were up at Newcastle and we did a couple of scores up there.
00:03:49
Speaker
We did a number of filming, new videos, new content, new social media, had a little meeting.
00:03:55
Speaker
And, yeah, it was a good couple of days away.
00:03:57
Speaker
It was short-lived but it was amazing.
00:04:00
Speaker
It was amazing.
00:04:00
Speaker
Yeah, it was a very hectic 36 hours for you out of Sydney.
00:04:05
Speaker
And, you know, I didn't know we were going to put no podcast in the unfortunate event, but it was like, oh, we just couldn't fit it in.
00:04:16
Speaker
And, you know, we never, never miss...
00:04:19
Speaker
But I think between us, I don't know how many, what was the drive for you?
00:04:23
Speaker
How many Ks did you drive?
00:04:24
Speaker
160 Ks.
00:04:25
Speaker
Each way?
00:04:26
Speaker
Oh, yeah, each way.
00:04:27
Speaker
So you did about 320, 350 Ks.
00:04:28
Speaker
I did 1,700.
00:04:28
Speaker
Forgive us, people.
00:04:29
Speaker
We missed a week.
00:04:30
Speaker
So, you know, in exceptional circumstances, we
00:04:45
Speaker
we'll try harder next time so yes it was a great couple of days in newcastle yeah good good couple of days and uh we've got some new merch and drawings so do you want to show everyone that on the youtube well i haven't got the drawings to hand they're gonna go i'm gonna i've gotta do well probably next week people will see the drawings because i'm gonna um
00:05:09
Speaker
We've got to do something for the

New Merchandise Launch

00:05:12
Speaker
illustrator.
00:05:12
Speaker
Yes.
00:05:12
Speaker
We'll copy right new things.
00:05:14
Speaker
But look at this.
00:05:16
Speaker
How good for the YouTube people.
00:05:19
Speaker
Yeah, I've got some tote bags.
00:05:20
Speaker
Little backpacks.
00:05:22
Speaker
The Perfecty Swim bag.
00:05:24
Speaker
I tell you what, I'm taking one of these to Hammo.
00:05:27
Speaker
They're awesome.
00:05:28
Speaker
Going to put me wet togs in it, Maxie.
00:05:30
Speaker
I'll get some videos of it on the beach.
00:05:32
Speaker
I'll get the content.
00:05:32
Speaker
Have a sec.
00:05:36
Speaker
Get the photo of the beach.
00:05:38
Speaker
So, yeah, that is going to be.
00:05:41
Speaker
So, anyone, while we're still here, last chance, people.
00:05:45
Speaker
Order your books.
00:05:47
Speaker
This superhero backpack is going to have in it first aid kit.
00:05:52
Speaker
There's going to be a Rashi.
00:05:53
Speaker
There's some books.
00:05:54
Speaker
There's some pictures.
00:05:55
Speaker
There's all sorts of goodies going in it.
00:05:57
Speaker
So, if you haven't ordered your book yet and you want to go into the draw to not just win one superhero backpack,
00:06:05
Speaker
Win one for your friend as well.
00:06:08
Speaker
There we go.
00:06:09
Speaker
Get on to it.
00:06:10
Speaker
There'll be, you've still got time.
00:06:12
Speaker
So there you go.
00:06:13
Speaker
That ticks off the book thing, Maxie.
00:06:16
Speaker
Yeah.
00:06:16
Speaker
I'll be happy with me in the marketing department.
00:06:19
Speaker
I'm just going to add, yeah, we did some new videos and new social grabs up there as well.
00:06:26
Speaker
Amazing backdrops, good storylines.
00:06:29
Speaker
And we look forward to sharing them from January next year.

Event Highlights and Experiences

00:06:33
Speaker
And, uh,
00:06:35
Speaker
I did a really cool experience for a call on the weekend out at Sydney Olympic Park and with Sally Fitzgibbons with a bunch of members that are part of the all experience, the Limitless Experiences Club.
00:06:54
Speaker
And, yeah, it was a great experience.
00:06:56
Speaker
I was very lucky enough to be a part of that and host it and be the emcee and look forward to hopefully working with them in the future.
00:07:02
Speaker
Yes, they're a brilliant crew.
00:07:04
Speaker
We had an awesome meeting with them.
00:07:06
Speaker
The All Pacific, you know, their program, you can sign up for free.
00:07:11
Speaker
And as you did, took some of the members for a day.
00:07:14
Speaker
So great program.
00:07:16
Speaker
I have got it on my list.
00:07:17
Speaker
We're joining that, Maxie.
00:07:19
Speaker
We're on to that.

Holiday Preparations

00:07:21
Speaker
And while we're in Newcastle, we stayed at the Mercure as well, which was great.
00:07:24
Speaker
So, you know, excellent stuff.
00:07:28
Speaker
And, yeah,
00:07:29
Speaker
One other thing that I haven't got one to show because they're in the fridge, the cookies, the Christmas cookies.
00:07:36
Speaker
The cookies, of course, and the cards.
00:07:37
Speaker
We love a Live, Learn, Survive Christmas cookie and a Christmas card.
00:07:42
Speaker
So, yeah, how good are they?
00:07:44
Speaker
They've arrived as well.
00:07:45
Speaker
So next week, got to do a bit of work for Santa, a bit of porcelain and posting.
00:07:51
Speaker
So, yeah, so that's good as well.
00:07:54
Speaker
It's been a hive of activity.
00:07:56
Speaker
It's been a big week and the people that are going to receive those gift cards, sorry, gift cards, Christmas cards and the cookies.
00:08:06
Speaker
Lots of love and thank you for the support for Live, Learn, Survive and we look forward to working and having you guys support us into 2025.
00:08:12
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:08:13
Speaker
It takes a village.
00:08:14
Speaker
And this year we've had many acts of kindness from sponsors, companies, people.
00:08:20
Speaker
And this is our little thing at the end of the year.
00:08:23
Speaker
It's nice to just, you know, say thank you back.
00:08:27
Speaker
So, yes, when I'm back from my trip, that'll be it.
00:08:32
Speaker
Posting and packing.
00:08:33
Speaker
Beautiful.
00:08:34
Speaker
Meanwhile, the cookies are in the fridge because it is a little bit warm here in Queensland.
00:08:39
Speaker
It's a heat wave down here in Sydney.
00:08:42
Speaker
So, yeah.
00:08:43
Speaker
Busy, busy.

Travel Adventures

00:08:45
Speaker
All righty, what have we got then?
00:08:51
Speaker
Yeah, it's not really much of an unfortunate event.
00:08:54
Speaker
But the other night after I finished the all experience at the Sydney Olympic Park at the Novatel there, I finished at 3 o'clock.
00:09:04
Speaker
Talia was going to join me for that night.
00:09:06
Speaker
It was the day before I was meant to go back to shift at Bankstown and we thought we'll have a nice low-key dinner at the Novatel or around the Novatel on Saturday night, not realising that Pearl Jam, it's the last...
00:09:20
Speaker
the last concept for their tour that they've been a world tour for the last year and Sydney was their last tour.
00:09:26
Speaker
So they had all people from everywhere, thousands of people, went downstairs.
00:09:32
Speaker
I was waiting for Talia at the bar.
00:09:34
Speaker
I thought, you know what, watch the cricket.
00:09:35
Speaker
We're three hours behind Perth.
00:09:37
Speaker
So I watched the cricket, hanging out in the bar area, you know,
00:09:42
Speaker
been responsible of course.
00:09:45
Speaker
And I was, I reckon I stood and waited for a chair and a table for, I don't know, maybe an hour and a half.
00:09:54
Speaker
And then the one time I got up to go get a soda water from the bar,
00:10:01
Speaker
the table I was eyeing off was vacant and yeah, someone swooped in and I missed out again.
00:10:09
Speaker
Oh, Maxie.
00:10:09
Speaker
It's not really much of an unfortunate event, but I thought, you know, waiting for something for so long, hanging out.
00:10:14
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:10:16
Speaker
Busy, busy time, like Pearl Jam.
00:10:18
Speaker
So that would have been everybody, you know, people wanting to see the last night.
00:10:21
Speaker
So many different people.
00:10:25
Speaker
I just, you know, touched on like a fair old
00:10:28
Speaker
So for me, the drive to Newcastle was, I think, seven-ish hours, seven, I don't know, I can't remember, seven, what is it, eight, I can't remember because we broke it up, so we didn't do it straight through.
00:10:39
Speaker
Coming home, had an absolute dream room, stayed at Foster.
00:10:46
Speaker
What an awesome, lovely little place that is.
00:10:49
Speaker
It's a nice place to work.
00:10:50
Speaker
Stayed in an absolute, you know when you just pick a random hotel for it,
00:10:57
Speaker
internet perfect just uh two two awesome guys running this place and just perfect and i said to him i wish you were in every country town in australia great great guys stayed there left great dream run home the roads better there was no road works all the rest of it and then i think brisbane pretty much rained the whole time i was away for five days
00:11:26
Speaker
And we approached Ballina.
00:11:28
Speaker
You know, we know the airport at Ballina.
00:11:30
Speaker
We approached Ballina and we could see this grey wall of cloud coming up ahead.
00:11:36
Speaker
And I was like, here we go.
00:11:38
Speaker
So we got to Ballina.
00:11:39
Speaker
We got to Byron.
00:11:40
Speaker
By the time we got just south of the Tweed area,
00:11:43
Speaker
Oh, man, did it rain.
00:11:45
Speaker
And then we got to Coolingatta Airport.
00:11:49
Speaker
We could not see.
00:11:51
Speaker
We actually got off the freeway and we did the beach road from Coolingatta Airport all the way to Hope Island, which is, for anyone that knows, that's like the whole length of the Gold Coast.
00:12:04
Speaker
from call and gather home over two hours.
00:12:07
Speaker
And this would be probably an hour and 15, an hour 20 if you get a good run, you know.
00:12:12
Speaker
And call and gather had 200 mil of rain in 24 hours.
00:12:18
Speaker
Wow.
00:12:19
Speaker
When I got home, there was a tree down on Mount Cotton Road.
00:12:24
Speaker
The creek at the end of the road had been up.
00:12:26
Speaker
I think they'd just been smashed with rain all week.
00:12:28
Speaker
But fortunately, I brought the sunshine back.
00:12:31
Speaker
So we've all dried out a little bit this week.
00:12:34
Speaker
So, yeah, it was all good until we got to the Goldie.
00:12:38
Speaker
And, man, did they get smashed.
00:12:40
Speaker
So, yeah, not, you know, not too bad.
00:12:43
Speaker
At the end of the day, we were all in safe.
00:12:44
Speaker
But there were a lot of bumps on those things.
00:12:46
Speaker
that traffic around the Gold Coast.
00:12:48
Speaker
So, yes, excellent.
00:12:50
Speaker
So, and finally at last, you've put a shift in.
00:12:55
Speaker
Yeah, we've got dad jokes first.
00:12:57
Speaker
Oh, dad jokes.
00:12:58
Speaker
Yes.

Humor Break: Dad Jokes

00:12:59
Speaker
Why don't I ever read that, Maxie?
00:13:01
Speaker
It's all good.
00:13:02
Speaker
It's all good.
00:13:03
Speaker
What have you got this way?
00:13:05
Speaker
So, Maxie, lucky I was prepared.
00:13:09
Speaker
What is the difference, Maxie, between a pirate and a farmer?
00:13:14
Speaker
What's the difference between a pirate and a farmer?
00:13:17
Speaker
Well, one buries his treasure and the other treasures his berries.
00:13:25
Speaker
I like it.
00:13:27
Speaker
I like it.
00:13:28
Speaker
What time is it?
00:13:28
Speaker
Not a lot, but he likes it.
00:13:30
Speaker
Sorry, you go.
00:13:31
Speaker
What time is it when you have to go to the dentist?
00:13:36
Speaker
I went to the dentist yesterday.
00:13:39
Speaker
What time was it then, Maxie, when I went to the dentist?
00:13:43
Speaker
Tooth hurty.
00:13:47
Speaker
Classic.
00:13:48
Speaker
Classic dad joke.
00:13:50
Speaker
That is.
00:13:51
Speaker
Okay.
00:13:52
Speaker
I've got another one for you.
00:13:53
Speaker
What have you got?
00:13:55
Speaker
So, I got trapped in an elevator, Maxie, with an animal that looked a bit like a rabbit.
00:14:03
Speaker
It was a hair-raising experience.
00:14:10
Speaker
I like it.
00:14:11
Speaker
You like it.
00:14:12
Speaker
I like it.
00:14:13
Speaker
Mm-hmm.
00:14:14
Speaker
I gave my handyman a to-do list, but he only did jobs one, three, and five.
00:14:20
Speaker
Turns out he only does odd jobs.
00:14:24
Speaker
Oh, nightmare.
00:14:28
Speaker
Well... Yeah.
00:14:30
Speaker
I've got one more.
00:14:32
Speaker
I've got one more that's on the page.
00:14:34
Speaker
I'm feeling because it's holiday, I'm going to go crazy.
00:14:36
Speaker
Go for the three.
00:14:37
Speaker
So, my Uncle Ben used to always say,
00:14:43
Speaker
With great power comes a huge electricity bill.
00:14:51
Speaker
I hope I got that right because I think I've cut the end off.
00:14:55
Speaker
There we go.
00:14:59
Speaker
Get off, Lee.
00:15:00
Speaker
Get off, get off.
00:15:01
Speaker
I like it.
00:15:01
Speaker
All right, I'll get rid of that so I don't use it again.
00:15:04
Speaker
No one wants that.
00:15:05
Speaker
All righty.
00:15:06
Speaker
So... Job of the week.
00:15:09
Speaker
Okay, we'll go back to it.

Fire Station Stories and Rescues

00:15:10
Speaker
You've put a shift in.
00:15:12
Speaker
LAUGHTER
00:15:18
Speaker
Yeah, back at the fire station this set.
00:15:21
Speaker
It's good to be back.
00:15:22
Speaker
I'll be back for a couple of weeks and then I'll be back on paternity leave when little Miss Sunny comes home.
00:15:28
Speaker
Yes.
00:15:29
Speaker
But yeah, the forest was busy.
00:15:32
Speaker
We had both days, we had a lot of substance calls, but not a lot of too much action, which is good because when there's a lot of action, I mean, people are injured and people are losing things.
00:15:44
Speaker
Yeah, we had a couple of house fires, three house fires, two car accidents.
00:15:51
Speaker
couple of medical access, couple of fire alarms.
00:15:54
Speaker
Yeah, it was just one of those steady days where you get a lot of those certain calls.
00:15:59
Speaker
We had a fire at 2.30 this morning.
00:16:01
Speaker
This person didn't have a working smoke alarm, but their dog woke them up.
00:16:07
Speaker
So if it wasn't for the dog, they might not have make it because the fire started in their old fridge.
00:16:17
Speaker
And they evacuated luckily, but their dog didn't.
00:16:20
Speaker
So when we got there, I was driving, the guys got in there and knocked a bit of the fire down.
00:16:27
Speaker
The occupant used an extinguisher to put the fire out and did a really good job.
00:16:32
Speaker
But a bit of smoke inhalation, we finished the job and we ended up, well, the other crews that got there saved the dog and the dog's all good.
00:16:42
Speaker
Please tell me the dog got out when the dog was the smoke alarm.
00:16:45
Speaker
Yeah.
00:16:47
Speaker
So the dog was still in there for the whole time, but the guys end up rescuing the dog.
00:16:52
Speaker
Yeah, eventful couple of days at the fire station.
00:16:55
Speaker
But, yeah, going into lifeguarding last Tuesday of all days, we did a lung shift before we went to Newcastle and ended up doing the old school rescue using a rescue tube.
00:17:05
Speaker
You told me about this.
00:17:06
Speaker
Yeah.
00:17:07
Speaker
Surfer, never surfed before, got stuck between Bronte and Temmer, very dangerous area, up against the rocks, panicked, went up the rocks, got pretty much cheese grated up against the barnacles and the rocks, sharp rocks there.
00:17:21
Speaker
One of the guys, Kalen went in with the rescue board.
00:17:23
Speaker
I went in with the rescue tube.
00:17:25
Speaker
Turns out the rescue board wasn't useful because it was too close to the rocks and Kalen would have gotten in trouble.
00:17:31
Speaker
So I managed to get up close to the rocks with the rescue tube and get up the rock platform and walk the guy out.
00:17:37
Speaker
And, yeah, luckily he's very lucky.
00:17:40
Speaker
If he hit his head the wrong way or if he could get up the rock, he could drown.
00:17:45
Speaker
Were you able, you say you were able to walk him out?
00:17:47
Speaker
You didn't have to bring him out through the ocean?
00:17:49
Speaker
Yeah, walk him through the back of the rocks there.
00:17:52
Speaker
Right.
00:17:53
Speaker
But obviously he didn't know how to do that, so we had to guide him through there.
00:17:55
Speaker
A bit of local knowledge.
00:17:57
Speaker
Yeah, it was a decent rescue.
00:17:59
Speaker
So between the two jobs that I do and then throw in a couple of schools, it's been an eventful week.
00:18:06
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:18:07
Speaker
As a...
00:18:08
Speaker
firefighting a lifeguard and an educator.
00:18:10
Speaker
So, yeah.
00:18:11
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:18:12
Speaker
So I've got one more question about the dog, Maxie.
00:18:14
Speaker
What kind of dog was he?
00:18:16
Speaker
It was a little, oh, it was like a little Jack Russell, I think.
00:18:20
Speaker
Yeah, a little Jack Russell.
00:18:22
Speaker
A little cutie.
00:18:22
Speaker
Bless him.
00:18:24
Speaker
But, yeah, he was okay.
00:18:26
Speaker
Small dogs, you know.
00:18:28
Speaker
He was behind the lounger under the bed or something, and the guys found him.
00:18:31
Speaker
So he was okay.
00:18:33
Speaker
And you know what?
00:18:34
Speaker
Little one, nice and low.
00:18:36
Speaker
Had a little bit more time than everybody else.
00:18:39
Speaker
Right.
00:18:40
Speaker
Exactly.
00:18:40
Speaker
Good stuff.
00:18:41
Speaker
Well, good job, Maxie.
00:18:43
Speaker
And good to put your boots back on, mate.
00:18:47
Speaker
Put the boots back on.
00:18:48
Speaker
Get back on the truck.
00:18:50
Speaker
I bet you missed those.
00:18:51
Speaker
The bells and sirens.
00:18:52
Speaker
I bet you missed them.
00:18:54
Speaker
Yeah.
00:18:54
Speaker
So good stuff.
00:18:56
Speaker
Good stuff.
00:18:57
Speaker
All righty.
00:18:57
Speaker
So what have we got next then, Maxie?
00:19:00
Speaker
Tip of the week.
00:19:01
Speaker
Tip of the week.

Safety and Awareness Tips

00:19:08
Speaker
Yeah, tip of the week this week is slips, trips and falls.
00:19:13
Speaker
Be mindful close to the edges of waterways, rivers, lakes, dams, watering holes, pools, creeks.
00:19:20
Speaker
you know, uh, off the coastal walk, sleep trips and falls, no use surroundings, make sure you have situational awareness, um, know where you place your footing.
00:19:28
Speaker
If you were to fall over, know how to correctly protect your head, you know, try and grab on to something and so on.
00:19:35
Speaker
And, um, yeah, it's just one of those things where people get caught out, they sleep and they fall and they get into stressful, dangerous situations.
00:19:43
Speaker
So yeah, just know your surroundings, know what you're doing.
00:19:47
Speaker
And if,
00:19:48
Speaker
An event was to arise, know how to go get help and how to get out of that situation.
00:19:52
Speaker
And it's that same old thing that we always say, you know, people have got no intention of going into the water.
00:19:57
Speaker
Something happens, they end up.
00:19:59
Speaker
I think there was a, I don't know the circumstances, but I think there was another drowning yesterday.
00:20:05
Speaker
There was one in the Royal National Park a few days ago.
00:20:09
Speaker
There was another one yesterday.
00:20:11
Speaker
My cousin, Mac, who's been on this podcast, he worked on the guy yesterday, I think, that passed.
00:20:16
Speaker
So, yeah, it's totally about six degrees of separation.
00:20:19
Speaker
Very, you know, as an ambo, you know, dealing with those stressful situations in the National Park and,
00:20:25
Speaker
You know, these people are swimming in areas that are not patrolled.
00:20:27
Speaker
They don't know how to swim.
00:20:29
Speaker
They're in dangerous areas.
00:20:30
Speaker
So you just need to look after yourselves.
00:20:32
Speaker
Yeah, it's not ideal.
00:20:34
Speaker
So just please, please, please stay safe, people.
00:20:38
Speaker
And that's a really good tip, Maxie.
00:20:42
Speaker
So, you know, make sure people will keep hammering them out over summer and make sure, you know, one or two of them stick.
00:20:52
Speaker
So, all righty, what have we got then next, Maxie?

Intriguing Facts and Insights

00:20:55
Speaker
We have crazy facts.
00:20:57
Speaker
Crazy facts.
00:21:00
Speaker
Yeah, I've got a couple of random ones here.
00:21:04
Speaker
Okay, let's go.
00:21:06
Speaker
Bring it back to random facts.
00:21:09
Speaker
The oldest living land animal on earth is a 192-year-old tortoise named Jonathan.
00:21:13
Speaker
Cool.
00:21:20
Speaker
The deepest part of the ocean is approximately 35,876 feet down.
00:21:23
Speaker
Wow.
00:21:24
Speaker
Wow.
00:21:24
Speaker
Silverback gorilla can lift over 1,700 pounds.
00:21:27
Speaker
Very heavy.
00:21:29
Speaker
Winds on Neptune can blow faster than 1,200 miles an hour.
00:21:31
Speaker
Wait.
00:21:43
Speaker
And the average person blinks 14 to 17 times per minute.
00:21:50
Speaker
There you go.
00:21:53
Speaker
Yeah.
00:21:54
Speaker
And there's one more here.
00:21:56
Speaker
90% of the world's population lives in the Northern hemisphere.
00:21:59
Speaker
That's a pretty cool fact.
00:22:00
Speaker
So how much, how, what's the percentage?
00:22:03
Speaker
90% live in the Northern hemisphere.
00:22:05
Speaker
That's crazy.
00:22:06
Speaker
That means there's only 10% of us down here?
00:22:08
Speaker
Yep.
00:22:09
Speaker
Yep.
00:22:09
Speaker
Compared to everywhere else in the world.
00:22:11
Speaker
That's incredible.
00:22:12
Speaker
I suppose when you think about it, Europe, North America, China, Russia.
00:22:16
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:17
Speaker
Wow.
00:22:18
Speaker
Crazy.
00:22:19
Speaker
There

Living in Australia: Reflections

00:22:20
Speaker
we go.
00:22:20
Speaker
It's a wonder we don't topple over.
00:22:25
Speaker
I've got a quick question.
00:22:27
Speaker
The ocean, 35,000 feet deep.
00:22:30
Speaker
Do you know where that is?
00:22:32
Speaker
I think it's in the something trench just off Japan.
00:22:39
Speaker
Okay.
00:22:41
Speaker
The Miramar Trench.
00:22:42
Speaker
Okay.
00:22:44
Speaker
Let me, I'll type it in.
00:22:47
Speaker
We'll find out.
00:22:49
Speaker
The reason I was curious about, you know when you're flying, don't you fly at 35,000 feet?
00:22:53
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:55
Speaker
And you feel a long way up.
00:22:58
Speaker
I was right.
00:22:59
Speaker
It's the Mariana Trench near Guam in the Pacific Ocean.
00:23:05
Speaker
Guam, okay.
00:23:07
Speaker
Yeah, 10,984 metres.
00:23:08
Speaker
That's about 10 Ks.
00:23:10
Speaker
So that's crazy, isn't it, to think as high as you fly, that's as deep as the ocean.
00:23:18
Speaker
The immense pressure, near freezing temperatures and lack of sunlight make this environment one of the most extreme on Earth.
00:23:26
Speaker
Wow.
00:23:27
Speaker
Oh, there'll be some creatures of the deep down there.
00:23:30
Speaker
Oh, there'll be some stuff down there.
00:23:31
Speaker
Yeah.
00:23:32
Speaker
Anyway, what have you got, Leigh?
00:23:34
Speaker
Okay.
00:23:35
Speaker
So a bit of a, you know, early reflection really for me, Maxie, because it's 26 years ago today I left my English life to get on a plane to Australia.
00:23:50
Speaker
So I thought...
00:23:52
Speaker
I remember the day took off from Heathrow Airport and the clouds disappeared between.
00:23:57
Speaker
And I thought, well, when am I going to be back?
00:24:00
Speaker
Who knows?
00:24:01
Speaker
So I basically, here we go.
00:24:05
Speaker
Some facts about Australia.
00:24:08
Speaker
And this is quite spooky.
00:24:10
Speaker
If you visit one new beach in Australia every day, it would take over 26 years to see them all.
00:24:18
Speaker
So I've been here as an Aussie 26 years today.
00:24:23
Speaker
So for every day I've been in Australia, I've gone to a different beach and not seen the same beach twice.
00:24:32
Speaker
That's crazy.
00:24:33
Speaker
That is a crazy fact.
00:24:34
Speaker
That also tells me we've got a lot of work to do, Maxie.
00:24:38
Speaker
A lot of beaches.
00:24:38
Speaker
There's all those beaches.
00:24:40
Speaker
We've got all those beaches that we need to know that people are safe when they find them.
00:24:45
Speaker
So Australia is the only continent in the world without an active volcano.
00:24:52
Speaker
Wow.
00:24:52
Speaker
I didn't know that.
00:24:53
Speaker
So there we go.
00:24:57
Speaker
We've got three times as many sheep as people.
00:24:59
Speaker
That's cool.
00:25:02
Speaker
I wonder how many times kangaroos we've got.
00:25:05
Speaker
What would that be?
00:25:06
Speaker
Insane.
00:25:09
Speaker
The largest Greek population in the world besides Athens in Greece is in Melbourne, which huge, huge Greek population in Melbourne.
00:25:19
Speaker
And Brisbane, my hometown,
00:25:23
Speaker
Has the world championships of cockroach racing every year.
00:25:28
Speaker
Good on you, Brizzy.
00:25:30
Speaker
And the last thing, do you think you need to go to Europe?
00:25:33
Speaker
I don't think so, because the Australian Alps receives more snowfall than Switzerland.
00:25:40
Speaker
Wow.
00:25:42
Speaker
There we go.
00:25:43
Speaker
So, yeah, and the last thing.
00:25:46
Speaker
We're known in Australia for our flora and fauna, and they're cuddly marsupials and some other animals, and they can't be found anywhere else in the world.
00:25:56
Speaker
So that does make us quite unique.
00:25:59
Speaker
So good on you, Australia.
00:26:01
Speaker
Thank you for making me so welcome over the last 26 years.
00:26:07
Speaker
It's no place like home.
00:26:11
Speaker
Good stuff.
00:26:12
Speaker
Good stuff.
00:26:13
Speaker
So there we go.
00:26:16
Speaker
So, right.
00:26:18
Speaker
More reflection.
00:26:19
Speaker
Let's go.

Educational Impact and Feedback

00:26:26
Speaker
Yeah, reflection this week is just some of the testimonials we get from the school.
00:26:31
Speaker
So it keeps a few on the fire burning.
00:26:32
Speaker
You know, last week, within not even a couple of hours I left the school, we're getting emails or testimonials from the teachers that listen to our program and our workshop.
00:26:42
Speaker
And it's really good to know that...
00:26:45
Speaker
You know, we're doing a good job by educating some of the kids and the teachers at these schools, but it's also good to get a bit of a pat on the back knowing that we're doing the right thing and help and inspire the next generation.
00:26:57
Speaker
Absolutely, we did.
00:26:58
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:27:00
Speaker
And you know what?
00:27:01
Speaker
It was like one of the things that...
00:27:04
Speaker
you know, same again, like last week, and we just literally had an awesome one from Abby, who was at the Callaghan College.
00:27:12
Speaker
And it was part of their year seven safety unit, they do swim survive programme, and they incorporated our visit with that.
00:27:21
Speaker
And she was absolutely thrilled and highly recommended us.
00:27:25
Speaker
So
00:27:25
Speaker
You know, it's the same thing.
00:27:26
Speaker
We've been sending a few emails out today and, you know, schools that are looking for 2025, part of their year seven, the safety unit, the swim survive programme.
00:27:39
Speaker
Get in touch.
00:27:40
Speaker
We've got, you know, there's all over our website, you know how to get in touch with

Musical Addition to Playlist

00:27:45
Speaker
us.
00:27:45
Speaker
So it would be absolutely awesome to get some more schools in 2025.
00:27:50
Speaker
And we're starting to book things in.
00:27:53
Speaker
So, you know, it is and it is great because it absolutely does keep the...
00:27:59
Speaker
You know, you come away and you've got such a buzz because you know everyone's had a great day.
00:28:04
Speaker
You know people have learned something.
00:28:05
Speaker
And, yeah, it just does make you inspired.
00:28:08
Speaker
You just want to do more.
00:28:10
Speaker
So, yeah, great.
00:28:12
Speaker
Nice.
00:28:13
Speaker
Sit back and look at it.
00:28:14
Speaker
So, all righty then.
00:28:16
Speaker
What else have we got then, Maxi?
00:28:18
Speaker
Yeah.
00:28:19
Speaker
So the playlist for the Live, Live and Survive Spotify playlist is Only Love by Ben Howard.
00:28:26
Speaker
It's already been added.
00:28:27
Speaker
Great song, very chilled, similar to Ziggy Alberts and Ben's joy, just a bit more vibe.
00:28:33
Speaker
Yeah, great song, Only Love.
00:28:36
Speaker
Some of these nice things coming into summer, Maxie, so, you know, a bit of a chilled vibe for summer.
00:28:42
Speaker
So good stuff, good stuff.

Weekly Rule and Optimism

00:28:45
Speaker
Rule for the rule book.
00:28:46
Speaker
Rule for the rule book.
00:28:47
Speaker
What have we got?
00:28:50
Speaker
Yeah, rule for the rule book this week.
00:28:57
Speaker
If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.
00:29:02
Speaker
Wise words, my friend.
00:29:04
Speaker
Love it.
00:29:05
Speaker
Yeah, just don't say anything.
00:29:06
Speaker
You know, it's just like, yeah, just don't say anything.
00:29:09
Speaker
And it's the same thing that comes back to the quote at the beginning, like, you know, optimism is a happiness magnet.
00:29:17
Speaker
If you stay positive, who needs to be saying, you know, you've got nice things?
00:29:22
Speaker
Just be kind, be nice.
00:29:25
Speaker
Move aside.
00:29:26
Speaker
Move aside.
00:29:27
Speaker
Don't move on.
00:29:29
Speaker
Water off a duck's back.
00:29:31
Speaker
Yeah, exactly.
00:29:32
Speaker
So, no, that's a great rule, Maxie.
00:29:34
Speaker
Well, that's a great little chat.
00:29:36
Speaker
We're almost at 30 minutes.
00:29:38
Speaker
Always.
00:29:39
Speaker
Yeah, almost at 30.
00:29:40
Speaker
Rob will be happy.
00:29:41
Speaker
Rob will be happy if he's doing his run and stuff, so that'll be cool.
00:29:46
Speaker
Have a great holiday.
00:29:48
Speaker
Enjoy.
00:29:49
Speaker
And we'll be back late next week.
00:29:52
Speaker
Yes, exactly.
00:29:54
Speaker
So we'll be back next week.
00:29:56
Speaker
And as we keep saying, we've got some great guests over Christmas and the holidays, and we're going to be together next week.
00:30:04
Speaker
And then we've got absolutely through right through to the end of January.
00:30:08
Speaker
So we've been doing a lot, a lot of things and storing them up.
00:30:12
Speaker
So we can't wait to share them because there's some brilliant guests.
00:30:16
Speaker
So, yeah, exactly.
00:30:18
Speaker
All right, then, Maxie.
00:30:19
Speaker
Well, I've got to go.
00:30:20
Speaker
I've got a plane to catch, mate.
00:30:22
Speaker
Yeah, well, enjoy.
00:30:23
Speaker
Stay safe.
00:30:23
Speaker
There's a palm tree waiting for me.
00:30:26
Speaker
I've got my book, got my togs.
00:30:29
Speaker
I'm going to go and get a few laps in.
00:30:33
Speaker
Good stuff.
00:30:33
Speaker
I hope you have a great trip.
00:30:34
Speaker
Enjoy and rest up and enjoy the last, the wind down of the year that was.
00:30:40
Speaker
Okay.
00:30:41
Speaker
And we will see everybody next week.
00:30:43
Speaker
Take care.
00:30:43
Speaker
Take care, everyone.
00:30:44
Speaker
Bye.
00:30:45
Speaker
Bye.
