Speaker
And we want to welcome you to our Live, Learn, Survive podcast.
00:00:14

We've created a series of awarding children's books, a global online education program, and are founders of the Live, Learn, Survive charity, all focused on teaching children and young adults life skills that will not only help themselves, but help others too.

We're on a mission to spread awareness about fire, water, and first aid education to inspire the next generation of first responders, and we're
00:00:38
Speaker
So join us for the next half an hour with some fun, inspiration and kindness and we'll try and learn something too.

Personal Updates and Reflections

00:00:43
Speaker
How are you this week, Lee?
00:00:45
Speaker
Welcome to the show.
00:00:48
Speaker
I am good, Maxie.
00:00:50
Speaker
Did I have a holiday in between talking to you last time?
00:00:54
Speaker
For the life of me, I've been home for two days and I can't remember it.
00:00:57
Speaker
Did I?
00:00:58
Speaker
Yeah.
00:00:59
Speaker
Yeah, you did.
00:00:59
Speaker
We spoke early last week and now we're a little bit early.
00:01:04
Speaker
We're within literally between the two Fridays, we smashed it.
00:01:10
Speaker
Exactly.
00:01:10
Speaker
Exactly.
00:01:12
Speaker
So, no.
00:01:13
Speaker
And how are you?
00:01:14
Speaker
You're looking alfresco.
00:01:16
Speaker
Yeah, I'm outside today, so I'm currently at the hospital.
00:01:19
Speaker
Everything's okay, but yeah, sunny is towards the point in of coming home, so we just need to be at the hospital a little bit more.
00:01:28
Speaker
I was anticipating to be at home for this podcast.
00:01:33
Speaker
However, a few things had changed.
00:01:37
Speaker
Yeah, so I'm here.
00:01:39
Speaker
So sorry if it's a little bit windy in periods and time, but yeah, it's good to be.
00:01:46
Speaker
Are we videoing this one or are we?
00:01:48
Speaker
Yes, we are.
00:01:49
Speaker
We are videoing.
00:01:49
Speaker
We are videoing.
00:01:50
Speaker
Okay, that's all right.
00:01:51
Speaker
I'll brush my head.
00:01:52
Speaker
Okay, that's it.
00:01:53
Speaker
We're videoing it for the YouTube people.
00:01:55
Speaker
Excellent.
00:01:56
Speaker
So...
00:01:57
Speaker
Well, look, you know what?
00:01:57
Speaker
We don't let people down, actually.
00:01:59
Speaker
We're here.
00:01:59
Speaker
We have it scheduled in, and here we are.
00:02:03
Speaker
So let's just roll in to this quote, and hopefully you get, you know, 20-odd minutes of peace and quiet out there in the courtyard.
00:02:14
Speaker
Exactly right.
00:02:15
Speaker
It's not one out here at the moment.
00:02:17
Speaker
That's all right.
00:02:18
Speaker
Good stuff then.
00:02:19
Speaker
So, right, quote of the week.
00:02:21
Speaker
What have you got for us?
00:02:23
Speaker
Yeah, so the quote of the week this week, Lee, is if you have knowledge, let others light their candle in it.
00:02:30
Speaker
Love it.
00:02:30
Speaker
Exactly.
00:02:31
Speaker
What's the point in keeping it all to yourself, eh?
00:02:33
Speaker
What's the

Year in Review and Giving Back

00:02:34
Speaker
point?
00:02:34
Speaker
You need to share.
00:02:35
Speaker
You need to share.
00:02:35
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:02:37
Speaker
It's so important to share.
00:02:39
Speaker
If you've got something that will help somebody else pass it on, absolutely.
00:02:43
Speaker
So, no, good quote that.
00:02:46
Speaker
Nice one.
00:02:47
Speaker
And things like that are important.
00:02:48
Speaker
You know, we're in December now.
00:02:49
Speaker
It's our first one in December.
00:02:52
Speaker
Nice to have a bit of the Christmas spirit.
00:02:55
Speaker
And also, Maxie, probably going to be our last one, life.
00:03:01
Speaker
Life.
00:03:03
Speaker
Yes, it'll be our last one for 2024.
00:03:04
Speaker
We're going to talk about that throughout the podcast.
00:03:09
Speaker
But it's been a massive year.
00:03:12
Speaker
This is currently at 166.
00:03:15
Speaker
That's not including the special guests that we've had throughout the year.
00:03:18
Speaker
So we're probably nearly at 200 plus episodes.
00:03:23
Speaker
However, it's been a big year.
00:03:25
Speaker
It's been an amazing year.
00:03:26
Speaker
We haven't, I think, out of the whole 52 weeks, we maybe missed maybe two in the 52 weeks.
00:03:30
Speaker
Yes.
00:03:32
Speaker
That's not bad going.
00:03:34
Speaker
Do not worry.
00:03:35
Speaker
There will still be a podcast each week.
00:03:37
Speaker
We did all those pre-recordings around August, October, November, September.
00:03:43
Speaker
Yeah, we've got so many guests and we've got enough.
00:03:45
Speaker
We're going to be taking you right through until...
00:03:49
Speaker
mid-January so um so no we've got um plenty of incredible chats with incredible people so that's all very exciting so um so yeah right okay good news of the week maxi what are we good news here we go
00:04:12
Speaker
Yeah, good news this week, Lee.
00:04:14
Speaker
It's a note from you.
00:04:16
Speaker
So do you want to share the category?
00:04:18
Speaker
No, I just thought this was a nice little story.
00:04:21
Speaker
So I follow on social media, Nottingham Panthers, or I might follow, it might have been the local news in Nottingham.
00:04:30
Speaker
So anyway, Nottingham Panthers, every December or like around this time of year,
00:04:36
Speaker
have called a teddy bear toss.
00:04:39
Speaker
So the Nottingham Panthers are an ice skating team.
00:04:42
Speaker
Ice skating.
00:04:43
Speaker
I think I'll show you share this, actually.
00:04:45
Speaker
Yeah, ice hockey team.
00:04:47
Speaker
And at their match on the weekend or whatever...
00:04:50
Speaker
they encourage everybody throws a teddy bear wrapped up, you know, whatever, onto the ice.
00:04:56
Speaker
So the whole of the stadium are chucking these teddy bears onto the ice.
00:05:00
Speaker
And this was the biggest one ever.
00:05:02
Speaker
They got 1,400 teddy bears and they're donated for, you know, for children in need around Christmas times.
00:05:08
Speaker
And they call it their teddy bear toss.
00:05:11
Speaker
So seeing all these teddy bears hurtling through the stadium onto the ice and then the ice hockey players go in with their, what's the,
00:05:20
Speaker
sticks, ice hockey sticks go and, you know, sweep them all up and they all get donated off to, you know.
00:05:29
Speaker
How great is that?
00:05:30
Speaker
So I just saw that as a nice little story and, you know,
00:05:35
Speaker
You know, good news, you've been in schools this week.
00:05:37
Speaker
You took one for the team.
00:05:39
Speaker
I was with you.
00:05:40
Speaker
Yeah, so since we last spoke, I've been to two different schools across southwest and western Sydney.
00:05:49
Speaker
Both schools were great.
00:05:50
Speaker
I think 250, 300 kids each school.
00:05:56
Speaker
But yeah, it's been a great wrap up for the year.
00:06:00
Speaker
You know, all the schools that we said that we would visit when we did our charity events back in February of this year, Creating Little Superheroes, you know, funds from that fundraising event has made us go to schools, not just here around Sydney, but around Brisbane, out in rural Queensland, up in Newcastle.
00:06:19
Speaker
So it's been an amazing year to top it off.
00:06:21
Speaker
And the school that I visited recently,
00:06:24
Speaker
last Tuesday, they were amazing.
00:06:28
Speaker
Every school is amazing, but these kids were really good and they got really involved and they took a lot out of it.
00:06:37
Speaker
They took a lot away from it.
00:06:39
Speaker
And when we talk about the unfortunate event, I'll mention how unfortunate that turned into a positive talking to the school.
00:06:50
Speaker
All good.
00:06:50
Speaker
Okay.
00:06:51
Speaker
And then we're just saying, too, coming to the Christmas time, it is December.
00:06:56
Speaker
You know, it's coming to Christmas spirit, Christmas time, giving back, checking in on loved ones, family, spending time winding down.
00:07:04
Speaker
And, yeah, it's been a great year, and we're getting the Christmas spirit.
00:07:10
Speaker
Yeah, exactly, exactly.
00:07:12
Speaker
So, you know, so many things.
00:07:14
Speaker
Schools are starting to finish, people having parties and get-togethers.
00:07:18
Speaker
And then equally, you know, it's a very difficult time for some people.
00:07:21
Speaker
It's not all about presents and Christmas trees.
00:07:24
Speaker
So,
00:07:25
Speaker
if maybe this is not the year that you're feeling it, then, you know, we are thinking of you too.
00:07:32
Speaker
So whatever you need to do to get through it, just, you know, look after yourself and do that for you

Firefighting Stories and Life Changes

00:07:40
Speaker
too.
00:07:40
Speaker
So, yes, it can be a nice time of year and it can be a difficult time of year.
00:07:48
Speaker
So we are thinking of everybody.
00:07:50
Speaker
So... We're coming closer to...
00:07:54
Speaker
Sorry, Lee.
00:07:54
Speaker
I've got a bit more extra to say.
00:07:56
Speaker
Yeah, so coming into 2025, adding on to what you're saying, you know, 2025 is only a few weeks away.
00:08:01
Speaker
So just hang on.
00:08:03
Speaker
Fresh start.
00:08:03
Speaker
New Year's resolution.
00:08:05
Speaker
Just get through this year.
00:08:07
Speaker
And yeah, start fresh next year.
00:08:11
Speaker
Exactly, exactly.
00:08:12
Speaker
2025 is not that far away.
00:08:15
Speaker
So we all get a new chance to start again.
00:08:18
Speaker
There we go.
00:08:19
Speaker
Exactly.
00:08:20
Speaker
So, all righty.
00:08:22
Speaker
What have we got?
00:08:23
Speaker
Unfortunate events.
00:08:24
Speaker
Unfortunate events.
00:08:30
Speaker
Yeah, well, this is where there's two things.
00:08:32
Speaker
The unfortunate event being the other day, this is my last set of shifts, fireys, give or take, before I go on paternity leave.
00:08:43
Speaker
We had the craziest shift ever, and I'll talk about the jobs a week very shortly.
00:08:46
Speaker
But on Monday, 24-hour shift, I meant to do a school, the last school on Tuesday.
00:08:53
Speaker
And, you know, people are saying, well, why do you do schools after a fiery shift?
00:08:56
Speaker
Well, this school could only do this Tuesday before schools wrap up this week into next.
00:09:03
Speaker
So the reason why we managed to squeeze them in, they weren't too far from Bankstown Fire Station.
00:09:08
Speaker
And, yeah, we had a crazy night.
00:09:10
Speaker
And, yeah, not...
00:09:13
Speaker
Not a, not a, yeah, we had a crazy night, which I'll talk about very shortly.
00:09:17
Speaker
Um, and then going to the school and giving the kids a bit of a heads up saying, Hey, um, been up all night, had a numerous amount of jobs and, uh, yeah.
00:09:26
Speaker
And they were kind of looked a little bit worried initially, but, uh, ended up being a really good school, getting really involved and the kids were having, having the absolute best time.
00:09:35
Speaker
And one of the teachers just sent me, uh, some videos and photos from the day and it, and it looks like everyone's just having a great time.
00:09:41
Speaker
So,
00:09:42
Speaker
An unfortunate event was positive.
00:09:45
Speaker
And then coming off shift this morning, coming straight to the hospital to do a bottle feed for Sunny.
00:09:52
Speaker
Due to the incident this morning, the spare clothes that I had that I was going to wear to the hospital got wet and smoky from a fire.
00:10:02
Speaker
So I had to wear complete gym clothes, which, you know, like a singlet, short shorts, short running shorts and joggers at eight o'clock this morning, walking into a hospital and into a nursery.
00:10:15
Speaker
And yeah, it's just all the nurses were like, is this a gym or is this a nursery?
00:10:20
Speaker
Yeah, it's really weird.
00:10:23
Speaker
Yeah, Maxi.
00:10:25
Speaker
Maxie, did you mix your bags up?
00:10:28
Speaker
It looked like you took your gym bags up.
00:10:30
Speaker
To be honest, it was funny walking, getting my coffee and then walking to a hospital.
00:10:35
Speaker
I'm literally the only person in the whole of the health district that's got shorts, literally shorts, singlet.
00:10:42
Speaker
It's like a tight singlet too.
00:10:44
Speaker
It's just, yeah, anyway.
00:10:45
Speaker
So it was pretty funny.
00:10:47
Speaker
There's me getting something.
00:10:49
Speaker
Lord, you wouldn't make the difference.
00:10:52
Speaker
Yeah.
00:10:54
Speaker
Yeah.
00:10:54
Speaker
It was pretty funny.
00:10:59
Speaker
Yeah.
00:11:02
Speaker
I said they were all smoky.
00:11:05
Speaker
It was all smoke and I went, yeah, sure, sure, sure.
00:11:07
Speaker
But yeah, no, I thought that was a little fun thing to throw in.
00:11:11
Speaker
But I think the more unfortunate was coming off shift, going to the school.
00:11:15
Speaker
But it was a positive, really good school and great time.
00:11:20
Speaker
So yeah, it wasn't really an unfortunate event.
00:11:23
Speaker
But I thought, you know, it could have been a recipe for disaster.
00:11:28
Speaker
Anyway, it wasn't.
00:11:29
Speaker
We pulled it through.
00:11:34
Speaker
So, yeah.
00:11:36
Speaker
But in saying that though, yeah, it's been a great couple of days.
00:11:44
Speaker
Interesting sort of days.
00:11:45
Speaker
So what have you got, Leigh?
00:11:45
Speaker
Have you got anything to share?
00:11:48
Speaker
Did you just lose me?
00:11:49
Speaker
My internet just completely dropped out.
00:11:51
Speaker
Yeah, I kept talking though, so it's all good.
00:11:53
Speaker
Okay, no one knows.
00:11:55
Speaker
Okay, I disappeared and now I'm back.
00:11:58
Speaker
Look, you know what?
00:12:01
Speaker
I think I'm kind of okay.
00:12:03
Speaker
I mean...
00:12:05
Speaker
I've been on holiday.
00:12:06
Speaker
Can't think that anything went wrong there.
00:12:10
Speaker
Had a bit of rain.
00:12:11
Speaker
Can't complain about that.
00:12:12
Speaker
If you go to the tropics in wet season, it's going to rain.
00:12:16
Speaker
So I think...
00:12:20
Speaker
Nothing too unfortunate.
00:12:23
Speaker
So I can't remember.
00:12:24
Speaker
So there you go.
00:12:25
Speaker
That's a good one, isn't it?
00:12:26
Speaker
That's a win.
00:12:27
Speaker
You took it.
00:12:28
Speaker
I think that whatever I may have had, I can't beat you turning up at the hospital in gym kit.
00:12:33
Speaker
So that's just, you know, yeah, what can you say?
00:12:38
Speaker
I was even anticipating wearing my fire shirt in there, but I'm like, nah, like, you know, don't be that off-duty firefighter wearing his uniform.
00:12:47
Speaker
And then ironically, the fire alarm went off in the nursery when I was hiding sunny.
00:12:54
Speaker
I didn't see any fireys, but, you know, having a firefighter shirt on on your day off in a, yeah, in a situation, I just didn't want to be that guy.
00:13:02
Speaker
You get in extra work and things and you just don't need that.
00:13:06
Speaker
And, you know, and the moral of the story is, Maxie, change your clothes in the boot of the car.
00:13:13
Speaker
Yes, that's a good one.
00:13:15
Speaker
Look, you're a dad now.
00:13:16
Speaker
You've got to be prepared.
00:13:17
Speaker
I've got two.
00:13:19
Speaker
I've got two towels.
00:13:22
Speaker
You always have a spare set of clothes for the babies and the kids.
00:13:26
Speaker
Exactly right.
00:13:27
Speaker
Yes.
00:13:27
Speaker
That's a big thing.
00:13:29
Speaker
I'm a chef and dad.
00:13:30
Speaker
There we go.
00:13:31
Speaker
Perfect.
00:13:32
Speaker
So, right.
00:13:34
Speaker
All righty.
00:13:34
Speaker
So, what have we got next, Maxie?
00:13:36
Speaker
Dad jokes.
00:13:37
Speaker
I'm always forgetting them.
00:13:39
Speaker
So, I'll remember it.
00:13:41
Speaker
Yes, dad jokes.
00:13:43
Speaker
What have we got this week?
00:13:45
Speaker
I'm just getting my notes up to stand by.
00:13:48
Speaker
Okay, that's all right.
00:13:50
Speaker
Okay.
00:13:51
Speaker
All right, I've got one here.
00:13:53
Speaker
Okay, go, go.
00:13:55
Speaker
What do you call an elf that can sing and dance?
00:14:00
Speaker
Oh, I don't know, Maxie.
00:14:02
Speaker
What do you call an elf that can sing and dance?
00:14:05
Speaker
Elphus Presley.
00:14:14
Speaker
You've got your dad jokes into the Christmas kind of thing.
00:14:18
Speaker
I kind of like that.
00:14:20
Speaker
All right, I've got one.
00:14:23
Speaker
So, Maxi, after playing the guitar for years, I thought I'd be able to learn the piano.
00:14:30
Speaker
But you know what?
00:14:30
Speaker
It's just not an easy instrument to pick up.
00:14:34
Speaker
I like it.
00:14:35
Speaker
I do like it.
00:14:40
Speaker
Oh, here we go.
00:14:40
Speaker
I've got another bad one.
00:14:43
Speaker
Okay.
00:14:45
Speaker
What do you call an obnoxious reindeer?
00:14:49
Speaker
Look at you and your Christmas dad jokes.
00:14:51
Speaker
I don't know, Maxi.
00:14:52
Speaker
What do you call an obnoxious reindeer?
00:14:55
Speaker
Rude.
00:14:57
Speaker
Alf.
00:14:58
Speaker
I'm going to let this one play out.
00:15:03
Speaker
Let this one play out.
00:15:10
Speaker
So last one then.
00:15:12
Speaker
It's not good to end the year if I'm honest.
00:15:15
Speaker
Actually, I've just... That's okay.
00:15:18
Speaker
I couldn't hear anything, so they're all good.
00:15:23
Speaker
Okay, right.
00:15:24
Speaker
What do you call a lizard that tells jokes?
00:15:29
Speaker
Gecko.
00:15:30
Speaker
A stand-up chameleon.
00:15:32
Speaker
I do like that one.
00:15:34
Speaker
I do like it.
00:15:37
Speaker
That's a good one.
00:15:38
Speaker
That's what we'll find over Christmas, a decent set of dad jokes.
00:15:42
Speaker
Oh, nightmare.
00:15:43
Speaker
All righty, so.
00:15:44
Speaker
Top of the week.
00:15:46
Speaker
Oh, I'm sitting down for this.
00:15:48
Speaker
I've literally, hang on, everybody.
00:15:52
Speaker
Tell us about your week.
00:15:58
Speaker
Yeah, obviously people that have been listening to the podcast for a long time, we talked about the job of the week between lifeguarding and firefighting, but I must say the shift that I had on Monday was probably one of the busiest, craziest, I wouldn't say the craziest, it was just the busiest,
00:16:17
Speaker
shift that I've had probably this year or for a little while because we had about 15 runs and every call that we had was a different call.
00:16:26
Speaker
So it's not very often.
00:16:27
Speaker
You might get 15 calls and it might be maybe three or four MVAs, which is car accidents or five fire alarms and two cat rescues.
00:16:37
Speaker
And, you know, like what I'm saying, I'm going with this is a common thing for if there's a storm event, it might be lift rescues or it might be floodings.
00:16:44
Speaker
Yeah.
00:16:45
Speaker
But today... There is a pattern.
00:16:47
Speaker
A pattern.
00:16:48
Speaker
So Monday was just a normal Monday.
00:16:50
Speaker
It wasn't school holidays or anything.
00:16:52
Speaker
And we had 15 runs.
00:16:55
Speaker
And it started off with a cat rescue, and I put a little reel on my Insta of Rescue on a K. I saw the cat rescue, yes.
00:17:01
Speaker
Well done.
00:17:02
Speaker
Well done.
00:17:02
Speaker
Proper climate.
00:17:04
Speaker
Car engines.
00:17:05
Speaker
And it's a very common place for kittens to get to go find refuge.
00:17:10
Speaker
And then the day just kind of escalated from there.
00:17:12
Speaker
We went to Wires Down.
00:17:13
Speaker
We had a couple of fire alarms.
00:17:15
Speaker
And then we, yeah, medical access, car accidents.
00:17:19
Speaker
And then we went to like a...
00:17:21
Speaker
kind of like a sewerage treatment plant kind of contraption that kind of filters sewerage smell.
00:17:32
Speaker
That caught on fire and that's like coal.
00:17:34
Speaker
It was like a carbon thing, which is impossible to put out.
00:17:37
Speaker
So we're there for a couple of hours doing that.
00:17:40
Speaker
And didn't you say to me that the last time that happened was like 20 years ago or something?
00:17:45
Speaker
Yeah, the last time I met a fire like that was 20 years ago and that was down in Wollongong.
00:17:50
Speaker
So technically they haven't had a fire in Sydney like that.
00:17:53
Speaker
So it's pretty cool to say we did that.
00:17:55
Speaker
And then, yeah, and then just escalated from there.
00:17:58
Speaker
We had an electrical fire in a house and then we went to a house fire at two o'clock in the morning, which was full on.
00:18:05
Speaker
We had one of the firefighters go down, not on my crew, but another shift from heat exhaustion.
00:18:11
Speaker
Had to go to hospital.
00:18:13
Speaker
And then that was two in the morning till about four or five.
00:18:16
Speaker
And then we went back to the station to regroup and then the bells went off again for a unit fire.
00:18:20
Speaker
just around the corner with the dog and person stuck inside.
00:18:24
Speaker
Luckily, the dog and the person got out.
00:18:26
Speaker
But, yeah, first arriving to that, and it was just a crazy, crazy, crazy shift.
00:18:33
Speaker
Mostly.
00:18:34
Speaker
No sleep.
00:18:36
Speaker
And we were straight into it.
00:18:37
Speaker
And then coming into Wednesday's shift, so yesterday, we had a number of fires again.
00:18:44
Speaker
We had an electrical fire and we had another fire this morning.
00:18:48
Speaker
So it's just a crazy time for fires and for people being a bit silly.
00:18:55
Speaker
Yeah, no, no, no.
00:18:56
Speaker
So absolutely crazy.
00:18:58
Speaker
Well, you know, you've finished that shift now and when you've done this...
00:19:03
Speaker
Go and get a cup of tea.
00:19:04
Speaker
Yeah.
00:19:05
Speaker
Sit in the chair, rock sunny.
00:19:07
Speaker
I'll tell you what, a little trick to keep up your sleeve.
00:19:12
Speaker
If you're really tired, if you do little 10, 15-minute power naps,
00:19:17
Speaker
You actually, it's like something to do with the science of deep sleep.
00:19:20
Speaker
If you do it for that long, it rejuvenates to a point where you can be a bit fresh.
00:19:26
Speaker
But if sometimes

Holiday Plans and Safety Tips

00:19:27
Speaker
if you sleep during the day or if you're really tired, you oversleep, you can wake up really groggy and tired.
00:19:32
Speaker
And you can feel worse.
00:19:34
Speaker
Sometimes it is that literally 10, 15 minutes can be as good as...
00:19:39
Speaker
Literally.
00:19:40
Speaker
Yeah, so I did a 10, 15-minute power nap today and I worked wonders.
00:19:46
Speaker
And, yeah, so it's a little trick to keep up your sleeve.
00:19:48
Speaker
It is.
00:19:49
Speaker
Sometimes it's just literally resting your eyes, isn't it?
00:19:52
Speaker
It just stops that.
00:19:54
Speaker
fighting it to all the rest of it.
00:19:57
Speaker
I've got a couple of lifeguard shifts coming up.
00:20:00
Speaker
Sorry, when I say a couple, I've got working on the week and a couple of lunch shifts.
00:20:05
Speaker
But, yeah, it might start winding down.
00:20:07
Speaker
As soon as Sunny comes home, I'll be definitely winding down the work.
00:20:09
Speaker
So I won't be working on the beach as much over the December into early gen.
00:20:15
Speaker
But, yeah, it's been busy on the beaches.
00:20:19
Speaker
You'll be having a few 15-minute power naps with snowy then in between feeds.
00:20:24
Speaker
Yes, exactly.
00:20:26
Speaker
So, well, crazy week, Maxie.
00:20:29
Speaker
Hats off to you.
00:20:30
Speaker
It was insanely hot as well.
00:20:32
Speaker
And all the crew, you are the action station.
00:20:34
Speaker
Never a dull moment.
00:20:37
Speaker
Never a dorm moment.
00:20:38
Speaker
And you certainly lived up to your name this week.
00:20:40
Speaker
So well done out there.
00:20:43
Speaker
Keeping Sydney safe.
00:20:45
Speaker
So, yeah.
00:20:46
Speaker
So, all righty.
00:20:47
Speaker
What have we got then this week?
00:20:49
Speaker
Tip of the week.
00:20:49
Speaker
What are we talking about on the tip of the week?
00:20:58
Speaker
Yeah, it's a naughty bit of goody.
00:21:00
Speaker
This video I recorded around your pool, Lee.
00:21:03
Speaker
It's a pool safety video talking about the importance of pool fences, CPR placards around the pool, having objects for kids to climb in or over, making sure you have full attention or supervising your kids, make sure you're off your phone.
00:21:20
Speaker
And slips, chips and balls.
00:21:22
Speaker
So it's a good little video for the Skills for Life program.
00:21:25
Speaker
And take note, we are in the process, which we did last week, to start to re-record a lot of our videos that we've recorded a couple of years ago.
00:21:34
Speaker
So from January, Skills for Life program, you will definitely start seeing new videos recorded that we did the other week and new social medias, grabs from those videos.
00:21:46
Speaker
So in our new polo logos.
00:21:49
Speaker
which is pretty cool absolutely in the new shirts so um yeah we've got heaps of things that will start rolling out into um 2025 so um so yeah great tip um stay safe around your pools people summer's started here in australia schools are starting to break up kids are around the house if you're
00:22:08
Speaker
Fortunately enough to have a pool, be careful.
00:22:10
Speaker
If you have a pool, just be very, very careful.
00:22:14
Speaker
So, no, great tip, Maxie.
00:22:17
Speaker
Excellent.
00:22:18
Speaker
So, crazy facts.
00:22:21
Speaker
What have we got this week, Maxie?
00:22:23
Speaker
What are we talking about?
00:22:29
Speaker
Well, I typed in, I was just curious to see what some of the things would come up on chat GPT about live, learn, survive.
00:22:40
Speaker
I said, give me 10 facts about live, learn, survive.
00:22:45
Speaker
So I thought it was pretty cool.
00:22:48
Speaker
Okay, let's see what they know about us as we finish 2025.
00:22:53
Speaker
Some of it's a little bit out, but I'm sure we can hand on heart say that the stuff that we've done.
00:23:02
Speaker
Okay.
00:23:05
Speaker
Award-winning programs.
00:23:06
Speaker
Recognized globally, Live, Learn, Survive has received multiple awards for innovative and impactful education initiatives.
00:23:13
Speaker
I'm going to say awards.
00:23:14
Speaker
You know, we've got the awards for the books, which is cool.
00:23:17
Speaker
Yes.
00:23:18
Speaker
And we did get an award, remember, with the crew in Tassie for putting on that thing.
00:23:24
Speaker
We did too.
00:23:25
Speaker
So we'll take that little thing.
00:23:27
Speaker
Yes, exactly.
00:23:29
Speaker
Saving lives every day.
00:23:31
Speaker
Through its workshops, books and resources and socials, the charity has equipped children with the knowledge to save themselves and help others in emergencies.
00:23:42
Speaker
Accessible for all, for remote communities to urban centres, Live, Learn, Survive ensures its programs are accessible to children everywhere, regardless of location and background.
00:23:53
Speaker
Like it?
00:23:54
Speaker
Creative education.
00:23:55
Speaker
Its unique approach combines storytelling, hands-on activities and relatable heroes like Max of the Lifeguard to make learning fun and memorable.
00:24:04
Speaker
There we go.
00:24:05
Speaker
A growing legacy.
00:24:06
Speaker
What started as one man and woman, or it said man's dream, but it's
00:24:10
Speaker
As a collective, myself and the lead.
00:24:12
Speaker
If they've only seen my name Lee, they could think I'm a man.
00:24:16
Speaker
That's a man's dream.
00:24:19
Speaker
Has grown into a global movement, inspiring the next generation of safety conscious citizens.
00:24:25
Speaker
And then last but not least, positive ripple effect.
00:24:28
Speaker
By educating children, LiveLand survives indirectly helping families and communities become safer, creating lasting legacy of awareness and prevention.
00:24:38
Speaker
So yeah, I thought it was pretty cool.
00:24:41
Speaker
Just pointing a couple little few facts here.
00:24:45
Speaker
Yeah.
00:24:46
Speaker
Well, here's to us, Maxie.
00:24:48
Speaker
I'm proud of us.
00:24:49
Speaker
We made it.
00:24:52
Speaker
We made it.
00:24:53
Speaker
We've packed UBT now about us.
00:24:55
Speaker
So no, that's amazing.
00:24:57
Speaker
And it is, it's, you know, what do we always say?
00:25:00
Speaker
You know, the,
00:25:01
Speaker
at the end of the year, you measure the gain, not the gap, and see what you have done.
00:25:05
Speaker
And it's nice when things like that, because you think, oh, yeah, we did.
00:25:09
Speaker
Yeah, exactly.
00:25:10
Speaker
So excellent.
00:25:12
Speaker
Well, I just got a few facts.
00:25:14
Speaker
It's December.
00:25:14
Speaker
It's Christmas.
00:25:15
Speaker
It's Christmas.
00:25:17
Speaker
I thought, what might we find out about Christmas that we don't already know?
00:25:22
Speaker
So I've got, it's the internet again, might say, I don't know if it's true or not.
00:25:27
Speaker
Don't come to me, question it.
00:25:29
Speaker
So I'm just here to entertain the people.
00:25:31
Speaker
So

Charity Achievements and Festive Wishes

00:25:33
Speaker
Canada, the lovely people in Canada, they have got a postcode for Santa in Canada,
00:25:42
Speaker
H-O-H-O-H-O, which is like ho, ho, ho, is designated for Santa in the North Pole.
00:25:51
Speaker
So Canadian children can write that on their letter, ho, ho, ho, and they've got it as the postcode for Santa in Canada.
00:26:00
Speaker
That's a good fact.
00:26:00
Speaker
That's cute.
00:26:02
Speaker
Jingle Bells was originally a Thanksgiving song.
00:26:07
Speaker
That's a good thought.
00:26:10
Speaker
Japan, I don't know if this is just a send-up and this is the internet, it's tradition for people to enjoy a Kentucky Fried Christmas.
00:26:21
Speaker
I've heard that before.
00:26:24
Speaker
Someone's having a lend-in me.
00:26:26
Speaker
I'm not sure.
00:26:27
Speaker
I'm not sure.
00:26:28
Speaker
But many people even place their KFC orders well in advance to secure their chicken dinner.
00:26:35
Speaker
I'm not buying that one.
00:26:37
Speaker
I'm not buying it.
00:26:50
Speaker
There you go.
00:26:51
Speaker
That's a pretty cool fact there, Lee.
00:26:56
Speaker
When you hear about all these sort of facts and stuff, it kind of keeps you always thinking and learning.
00:27:03
Speaker
I love hearing some of these facts that we always do.
00:27:06
Speaker
So Lee is going to be joining us back very shortly.
00:27:10
Speaker
She had a little bit of a dropout, it's fine.
00:27:16
Speaker
Did you jump in and carry on, Max?
00:27:18
Speaker
Yeah, I did.
00:27:19
Speaker
You know, it's funny because I wasn't really making much sense, so people would know that there's a little dropout.
00:27:25
Speaker
You know, we don't edit anything in this podcast, so as we all know.
00:27:30
Speaker
I think something's telling me.
00:27:32
Speaker
I'm getting things about my storage on my computer, so I think it's almost like packing up.
00:27:37
Speaker
Anyway, it's end of the year.
00:27:39
Speaker
My computer is ready to knock off.
00:27:42
Speaker
And then the last thing that I've got, The Grinch is the highest grossing Christmas film of all time.
00:27:49
Speaker
The Grinch.
00:27:50
Speaker
I wouldn't have thought that.
00:27:51
Speaker
I would have thought it was like the Polar Express or, you know, something like that.
00:27:54
Speaker
It's on the internet.
00:27:55
Speaker
Who's like, you know, who knows?
00:27:57
Speaker
And can be gained date back to 1670.
00:28:00
Speaker
Who would have thought?
00:28:02
Speaker
I thought it was something that Woolies picked up.
00:28:04
Speaker
Anyway, there we go.
00:28:06
Speaker
So there's the crazy facts.
00:28:07
Speaker
So...
00:28:09
Speaker
Let's keep going before my internet fails again.
00:28:12
Speaker
Reflection.
00:28:15
Speaker
Reflection of the year.
00:28:17
Speaker
What are we talking about?
00:28:24
Speaker
Yeah, reflection, Lee, you've mentioned this.
00:28:27
Speaker
You put this in the note.
00:28:29
Speaker
2024, creating over 3,000 little superheroes.
00:28:34
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:28:35
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:28:36
Speaker
It's like literally...
00:28:39
Speaker
Doesn't seem two minutes since we were all in that room in February.
00:28:43
Speaker
We did the launching of Creating Little Superheroes.
00:28:46
Speaker
We had all those people support us.
00:28:48
Speaker
And here we already are in a blink of an eye at the other end of the year.
00:28:53
Speaker
And 3,000 Little Superheroes later plus add into our tally.
00:28:58
Speaker
And, yeah, it's just been a great year.
00:29:01
Speaker
The people we've met, the schools we've been, everything we've done.
00:29:04
Speaker
And it's been a really huge year of kind of,
00:29:09
Speaker
you know as with anybody who runs a charity or a business you're always evolving redoing your strategy there's so much work that goes on in the background so yeah there we go it's been an incredible year and I'm really really proud of what we've been able to do so hats off to us Maxie
00:29:30
Speaker
hats off and the cool thing is too we always give people a little bit of a insight of things that we'll work on and that and we're not going to give too much away but we are working on some really exciting things into next year and we're waiting to hear some news maybe in the next couple of weeks so you know the news about what we're going to hear in a couple of weeks will be in next year's podcast however you know it's very exciting times and we can't wait to share with you all the it'll just be a nice little wait to top off the year
00:30:00
Speaker
Absolutely, absolutely.
00:30:03
Speaker
So, okay, Maxine, what's next?
00:30:06
Speaker
Because my word document is now shut down now, so I've got literally... Okay.
00:30:13
Speaker
All right, so we'll finish it off quickly.
00:30:17
Speaker
So Driving Home for Christmas by Chris Ray is on the playlist and the Spotify playlist this week.
00:30:24
Speaker
So make sure you check out our Spotify playlist.
00:30:27
Speaker
This is the Christmas song, Chris Rea, Driving Home for Christmas.
00:30:31
Speaker
It's from the Gavin and Stacey.
00:30:33
Speaker
There's going to be, everyone in the UK is going to have the Gavin and Stacey on Christmas Day.
00:30:39
Speaker
And it's the ultimate Christmas song.
00:30:42
Speaker
So driving home for Christmas.
00:30:44
Speaker
And actually, I'm dedicating it to Sonny because you're going to be driving her home for Christmas.
00:30:49
Speaker
She actually gave me goosebumps, Enli.
00:30:52
Speaker
It's going to be a beautiful time to have her for Christmas.
00:30:58
Speaker
So that's
00:30:59
Speaker
That is my little song for Sonny, Driving Home for Christmas.
00:31:04
Speaker
So there you go.
00:31:06
Speaker
And if you see the parallels of the Gavin and Stacey, it's brilliant.
00:31:11
Speaker
So yes, there we go.
00:31:13
Speaker
That's the song.
00:31:14
Speaker
And then what do we got, Maxie?
00:31:15
Speaker
What's the last thing?
00:31:16
Speaker
Roll for the robot.
00:31:24
Speaker
Yeah, rule for the rule book this week, Lee, is be kind, stay grateful, and most importantly, everyone have a great Christmas.
00:31:35
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:31:35
Speaker
Have a really, really great Christmas.
00:31:38
Speaker
Be grateful for what you've got.
00:31:40
Speaker
Be thankful for everything that you have.
00:31:42
Speaker
And just be kind because, you know, it's not all what it looks like on the Christmas cards for the people.
00:31:50
Speaker
So,
00:31:50
Speaker
You know, I'm sure there's people around you now, Maxie, that will be visiting the hospital on Christmas Day.
00:31:55
Speaker
You know, they probably are not getting their babies home for Christmas.
00:32:00
Speaker
So, you know, it's like we all don't know what other people are going through.
00:32:04
Speaker
So just have a bit of grace, be kind and be grateful for what you do have.
00:32:11
Speaker
And don't stress about what you don't.
00:32:13
Speaker
So don't stress if the kids haven't got the right presents under the tree.
00:32:18
Speaker
it really, really does not matter.
00:32:21
Speaker
Just be quiet and look at yourself.
00:32:25
Speaker
Stay safe.
00:32:27
Speaker
Yes, stay safe.
00:32:28
Speaker
And we're going to be back in 2025.
00:32:30
Speaker
We've got some great chaps and guests.
00:32:33
Speaker
I hope you really enjoy some of the people that gave their time to come and hang out with us for an hour and some really inspirational stories and stuff.
00:32:43
Speaker
So hopefully you'll enjoy that while we have a little bit of a...
00:32:48
Speaker
you know, um, respite and, um, well, it's not, not really respite for you, Maxie, you're going to be very busy.
00:32:56
Speaker
Um, but you know, a bit of a downtime over the, um, over the weekly routines and, and have the guests and, um, yeah, everyone have a great, great Christmas wherever you are in the world and safe travels.
00:33:10
Speaker
So many people travel this time, catch up with families and all the rest of it.
00:33:14
Speaker
So safe on the road.
00:33:16
Speaker
And, um,
00:33:17
Speaker
That's it from me.
00:33:18
Speaker
Anything for you, Maxi?
00:33:20
Speaker
