We’re back with Part 2 of our potty training chat — and just to be clear: we are not experts. We’re still very much in the middle of it, figuring things out one accident at a time.

In this episode, we’re answering your most common questions about potty training, from how to start, to regressions, to whether you really need a little potty (jury’s still out). Plus, we’re sharing the best tips we got from other moms that made us feel a little more sane.

We also recap Father’s Day — the good, the chaotic, and the emotional — and talk about the summer sickness spiral that seems to be hitting every household right now.

Come for the potty talk, stay for the solidarity. You’re not alone, and you’re doing great. 💛

There's no right way to do it. Oh, we're going to get into it. What up, moms? My name's Whitney Williams, and I'm here with my best friend, Candice, and we're the Mom Group Chat Podcast.
00:00:20
Speaker
What up? You sound like a man. I know. i say my what? You always say your last name, Whitney Williams. Well, it's kind of fun to say.
00:00:31
Speaker
It is. It is fun. Like, mine's not fun. Like, I'm not going to say. Candace Cole was fun. I know. canda I miss Candace Cole. R.I.P. Honestly. Candy Cole. Candy Cole. No, I am We are ah down with a cold in June. Like, what the fuck? Who gets a cold in June?
00:00:48
Speaker
Us, I guess. It was so funny. I was on like a work call yesterday and this guy was like, I'm sorry if I sound bad. I'm like sick right now. I'm like, um so is everyone. It doesn't matter when you, he doesn't have little kids. So I don't know what his deal was, but I was just like, it doesn't stop. I actually feel like we've gotten more sick as the years gone on. Like we were barely sick in the winter.
00:01:11
Speaker
I don't know, man, but.

Family and Health Chat

00:01:14
Speaker
It actually, it's funny because it happened to Vinny first. Like Vinny kind of caught it first. Well, Vinny and Alice. But Alice's was like fever-y.
00:01:24
Speaker
And me and Evie have it now. And both of us are like snotty McGee's. Like we are sinus-y, like snotty. So I don't know. I don't know what's up with that. but I'm sorry. It sucks being- It's okay.
00:01:37
Speaker
You shouldn't be ah like sick in the summer. It should not be allowed. Yeah. And Evie is here with me today. she I just put her down for a morning nap, which typically she doesn't do. She's on a one nap schedule now, but she would normally go to my in-laws and ah my mother-in-law always like takes, like they're, they are out and about all day. They're like at the pool and like at the playground.
00:02:00
Speaker
And I just felt like with her being so sick, I'm like, i I don't think she needs to be like ootin' a boot right now and like laying by the pool. i think she needs an extra nap and a chill day. Yeah.
00:02:13
Speaker
So I kept her home with me. so Totally. I would too, I think. Good for you. But honestly, i needed this. I needed this recording because it's going to bring me back to life. Just chatting by chatting with you.
00:02:28
Speaker
Do you know that TikTok sound that's like, oh, we needed this. I think it's Paula Deen. And oh, my God. i Mackenzie and I say it a lot. They're like, like, if you take a bite of something and you're like, oh, we needed this.
00:02:40
Speaker
ah Or like you take a drink and you're like, oh, we needed this. That's how it kind of just sounds like every day here in Tennessee. True. That's like Becky just calling you on a Tuesday being like, we needed this.
00:02:54
Speaker
I truly think my mother has gotten like her accent is the, yeah, it's a thick boy accent. Like I've noticed it yeah significantly lately. I'm like, how did I learn to talk?
00:03:10
Speaker
It's actually, you do have a Southern accent though. I think that you don't think that you do, but you do. I think I do too. But it's not thick. It's like a it's like a a little twinge.
00:03:24
Speaker
or What's it called? Twinge? Twinge Southern? Twang? don't know. a twang. It's there. It's fine. I'm from here. It is what it is. Yeah. And Chris's has an accent too, for sure.
00:03:36
Speaker
His was worse. We all know. His was worse. It was yeah yeah way worse. Like it was bad. Like when I first met Chris, he was like an Alabama boy. he was like.
00:03:50
Speaker
When we started texting, I couldn't understand his text. Like the way he, he would say you was, yeah. Like I just couldn't understand like the way he was talking.
00:04:05
Speaker
Like, yeah, like why a or like, yeah, why Yeah. Like how are, well, how are you? It's not that weird. I know, but no, but like that's how we talked was how are you? Like, yeah, like, are you going to the frat houses tonight? That's like weird. Are you going to the frat houses tonight?
00:04:26
Speaker
um Oh my God. I don't know how we got here once again. i don't know. I don't know. We're just yapping. But we he definitely had like a super thick accent when we first met him. But he's like it's calmed down.
00:04:41
Speaker
I know. i And I that was my fault because I ah we've talked about this before. You beat it out of him. I beat the living shit and said stop it.
00:04:52
Speaker
Don't say tow it anymore. Toilet? What the fuck is A toilet. Oh, a toilet.
00:05:02
Speaker
Oh, my God. You're so right, though. He did say it like that. i feel like I can hear it in my brain. He hasn't said it in a while. I think he's scared of me. He, like, flinches. You beat it out of him, so.
00:05:15
Speaker
No, no. I don't know. is funny. I don't know how that all changed, but it did, and i don't know. Anyway, Candace was really. Speaking of toilet. What? Today's episode is potty training part two.

Beauty and Personal Care

00:05:28
Speaker
Yes, yes, yes. I was going to say i was laughing at Candice because she got Botox.
00:05:34
Speaker
Tell them. Oh, my God. Okay. So two weeks ago. ah so it's like setting in. It's setting in right now. I got Botox and I actually don't get Botox. I get Daxify, which is what I prefer. that that Dye Sport?
00:05:52
Speaker
No, it's called Daxify. It's a newer ah injectable. It is all natural. Not that I really care about that kind of stuff, but it lasts longer on me. My body, for some reason, but like metabolizes Botox really quickly. And um my injector person was like, you should try Daxify.
00:06:10
Speaker
a lot of people who feel like Botox um, metabolize quickly. Like they do well with doxify and she was right. I really like it. It also gives like the skin a glowier look. Um, and I like genuinely see a difference. So I don't know if you're, if you're curious, check out doxify. It's a great alternative to Botox.
00:06:29
Speaker
Anyway, um but I think that they did a little too much and I cannot move my forehead at all. like Like usually, you know, you still get some movement. i Like right now I am trying my absolute hardest to lift my eyebrows and I can't.
00:06:46
Speaker
And I was telling Whitney, doing my makeup has been so annoying because I cannot lift my eyebrows to like put on my mascara and my eyeshadow. I'm like, I'm over here using my finger to like lift my eyebrow so like get my mascara in there. And I feel an old lady who's like lifting her I just, I, I, it's fine.
00:07:09
Speaker
You learn, you know, that's why it's so great that these, this stuff like dissolves eventually, but I definitely am going to go back and be like, I want a at least a little bit of movement. I'm just laughing. don't want to feel like a frozen fairy. She's got that,
00:07:22
Speaker
That heavy forehead feeling. That is like the worst. It's so annoying. And I actually kind of feel like it makes me feel like I have a headache even when I don't. Like, I don't know. i feel like I feel like I want to just like push right here. Yeah. That could also be my sickness.
00:07:37
Speaker
But I don't know. I feel like heavy. That and you putting on mascara and like lifting your eyebrow like Ursula. Like was sky high. Literally. That was so funny. my gosh. Yeah.
00:07:49
Speaker
Literally. Yeah. Well, um anyways, that made me laugh.

Travel Experiences

00:07:53
Speaker
I just got back from ah work trip in Vegas. We also everything celebrated our 100th episode. We have so much going on. um it was just a work trip. I was such a tame good girl in Vegas. Like I when I'm telling you only had like two drinks a night and I was basically there for the food.
00:08:14
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. It was so good. what'd you have? Beauty and Essex, obviously. my God. So good. I like made them go there. we We stayed at the Fountain Blue and they like wanted to stay in the hotel. And I'm like, can we just leave one night? And I like booked it anyway and We went. It was so of fun.
00:08:33
Speaker
And then we did another place in the Fountain Blue called Komodo. And it was so freaking good. It was Japanese. and we just I was going to say it sounds Japanese. The chef tasting. We were just like, hey, like
00:08:48
Speaker
this was so fun. And we want just try everything that you have. And like in Vegas, there's just wagyu and lobster everywhere. like Did you notice that? It's just like...
00:08:59
Speaker
Yeah. Everyone's saying. It's like rich. Like the food is rich. Yeah. The food in Vegas is genuinely so good. Like that's definitely what I remember most about going there is the food was so good. i know. Everyone from work is like, oh, did you gamble? was mm. I'm here for the food, my guy. Like I'm here yeah yeah to eat.
00:09:20
Speaker
So just like, oh my God, just the fried shrimp tempura with avocado with a little wagyu over it Wagyu tacos. Oh my God, yum. I know. Wagyu and lobster fried rice. I was like, ah I'm living.
00:09:36
Speaker
am living. Wow. That sounds so good. I'm hungry actually. um' already thinking about lunch. When am I not thinking of my next meal?
00:09:47
Speaker
I already have an idea. Have you ever had this is like so like opposite end of what we're talking about about like fancy rich food. But if you're sick, the best chicken soup that you can get is from Carrabba's. Have you ever had the Carrabba's chicken soup?
00:10:04
Speaker
I have. It is so good. It's like spicy. The mama's chicken soup. And it has the little tiny ditalini noodles in it. Whenever I'm sick. and And it has potatoes in it, which is an important important thing to know.
00:10:21
Speaker
but It adds to the soup. Anyways, I'm already thinking about, because I'm not feeling well, I'm going to get some Carrabba's chicken soup for lunch. haven't had Carrabba in a while. Like that growing up was my mom's favorite.
00:10:37
Speaker
Like it is so good. I'm not even going to Nashville and go Carrabba's. Yeah. I'm not even going to lie to you. Like we get Carrabba sometimes and it slaps every time. And sometimes if we go and it's always good. And we went like, this sounds so cheeky. It's like the adult version of Olive Garden.
00:10:57
Speaker
It feels like. Yeah, it's like the better Olive Garden for sure. I would pick Carrabba's over Olive Garden any day. What, duh. mozzarella sticks they have.
00:11:07
Speaker
Well, and they have like the little dipping, the olive oil. Yeah, the olive oil bread dip. Yeah, and my mom always was like, i she always wanted to go there like Maggiano's or something.
00:11:18
Speaker
which is also a chain Italian. Isn't it funny? Like when you think back to childhood, like, do you remember like non chain restaurants? I feel like I only remember going to like chainy restaurants. I'm from Clarksville, Tennessee, where it's like chain central. We don't, we didn't have, there was like one like local owned restaurant, like called Red's Bakery.
00:11:42
Speaker
And that was it. Everything else was chain city. Like we didn't have anything like that. Yeah, I feel like, I mean, I'm sure Tampa did, but we just, cause Tampa is like obviously a bigger city than Clarksville, but I just don't remember ever going there other than on right by our house. There was, my God, what was the Don Pablo's? There was a Mexican place that was so fucking good and so cool in there. it had like neon signs.
00:12:10
Speaker
It was like a big old brick warehouse. They turned into this Mexican restaurant and they had ah a, um, Like a tortilla making station where they had the thing, the balls of dough and they would press the tortillas cool and you could go up there and ask for a ball of dough and then you could like play with the dough.
00:12:26
Speaker
Yeah. And eat it or whatever. or just when I tell you, we didn't grow up going to Mexican. Isn't that so fucking crazy? Like i didn't start going to eat. Mexican until like Rachel and Morgan came into my life and like they loved it.
00:12:39
Speaker
And so we always would start going. And then I married Chris, who is the biggest Mexican restaurant lover on planet earth. This man loves a margarita. ah And he said that they used to go all the time. And I'm like, we literally didn't ever do that.
00:12:54
Speaker
We always, Oh, Charlie's was that girl. She was, she was the restaurant. I had never been to oh Charlie's until I met you in Alabama. Yeah. That makes me laugh, actually.
00:13:09
Speaker
i We had so many hungover mornings at O'Charlie's where I would get crispy Sprite. Oh, we would always. That's mine and Candice's. Like when we were in college, we'd say we'd before walking in, we say, are we going all out?
00:13:23
Speaker
Which meant a Sprite is included in the meal. Yeah. Yeah. Which now seems so fucking silly, actually. love it. It's so it was like, are we going all out? Yeah, we're getting a soda. yeah Yeah.
00:13:37
Speaker
Yeah. And O'Charlie's, they had the triple appetizer thing, which was like a triangle um pepper jack um mozzarella stick.
00:13:49
Speaker
And then potato skin wedges and chicken tendies with um honey mustard. Wow. Okay. Does O'Charlie still exist? Yeah. Oh, okay.
00:14:01
Speaker
Oh, yeah. I'm looking if there's one close to me. Now I'm like... Hey, Candice, they have a great potato soup. Yeah.
00:14:09
Speaker
Let me see. And their roles are so Or Charlie's Restaurant, Florida.
00:14:16
Speaker
Nope. Closest one is Panama City Beach, which is like literally nine hours from me. Or, um yeah, that's it. Damn.
00:14:28
Speaker
So it's like a southern thing. Like

Weekend Recap and Celebrity Sighting

00:14:30
Speaker
not, because Florida is like, you know, it's like it is southern, but it isn't. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, good. Man. Wow.
00:14:40
Speaker
Good times. I'm hungry now. i can't wait to order lunch. um I'm probably just going to eat something here. but You know what we also didn't do, which I kind of feel bad. What? We didn't, um on mom group chat, social media, recognize the dads for Father's Day. I'm sorry.
00:14:57
Speaker
Love you. oh
00:15:01
Speaker
I got to say, I i mean I do want to brag on Chris because I was gone last week and that man like didn't ask me for help. He just like figured it out.
00:15:14
Speaker
Like he asked someone at school to help pick them up. Like he had his sister help one day because Jenny's living here. he didn't really, didn't really complain.
00:15:24
Speaker
I'm just like, thank you for being self-sufficient with that. Like it just took it out of my plate. amazing And I just wanted to Give a little shout out and happy Father's Day to Chris and Vinny. I'm so sorry we didn't post about it, but I love you so much.
00:15:41
Speaker
Oh my gosh. It was just that we were so focused on them to that day, right? That we just weren't on social media much. Yeah. So we had such a fun weekend. We on Saturday went out with a group of friends and We like kind of, you know how everyone does a little joke, like you can make your husbands wear the same shirt and show up and blah, blah, blah. And we were like, let's do a funny joke. So we got them all founding father's wigs, which we went to this like really classy place that only serves cocktails called the Patterson house in Nashville. And so we gave them this gift.
00:16:16
Speaker
Nicole Kidman was there. Like, what's up, Nicole? Oh, Like, so we were just like, look at those people over there. I was waiting. I was hoping she was going to come over and be like y'all are so funny. you know But she didn't. But I did give her a little smirk and say hi.
00:16:33
Speaker
Um, So we did that there and then like had them wear it to dinner. And we went to this new place called V. And it's where they... um It's a really fun Italian place. At 9 o'clock, they go around and they give everyone shots, limoncello shots. And like they were like whipping around the towels. And then when you leave, they give you an espresso shot. i was like...
00:16:54
Speaker
This place is for me. I love this place. Wow. That's so fun. Yeah. No, I was watching your Instagram stories and um I was so jealous. I was like, I would give anything to switch lives with Whitney right now because we were not having a great weekend. So I was like, wow, I'm so jealous of Whitney. looks so fun. It was fun. We were, I was like in tears, like suffocating. I was laughing so hard all night at the pictures. had to,
00:17:23
Speaker
Because the wigs started to fall apart. Like, literally. at one point, they all had, like, curtain bangs. Like, it so funny. Oh, my God. I, like, can't talk about it. But, yeah, they were so funny. And then the next day, you know, drunk us were like, anyone come over? We're going to grill out. And so we had some friends over Sunday afternoon. And all the kids just played in the pool. And we, I really did not need to have any more to drink.
00:17:53
Speaker
on Sunday, but whatever. Father's Day. Love you. so fun. Yeah. So fun. Oh my God. I'm so jealous. That is so fun. I was literally watching your stories. Like I want to be there.
00:18:05
Speaker
Your friend group in Nashville, like is so good. i am like ours is good too. We just, we, I need to step up and plan more. i think it's hard. i'm I'm like on the early side.
00:18:18
Speaker
Like I had kids early. Like a lot of our friend groups, like they don't have kids yet. Yeah. yeah okay And also like if they're younger, it's harder to be in like that same stage. Like this friend group is...
00:18:33
Speaker
we all have daycare together so it's like we're all we all have kids the same age and we all have whatever um support that way but it was fun because all the dads were game and they were so into it so they were good sports it was funny really funny like and it was not like it was kathleen's idea she was like let's do something funny but then I came up with the wig because I'm a marketing genius. I'm just kidding. Yeah. know That video of Chris to the techno music is making me laugh so hard.
00:19:08
Speaker
He's still got it, man. He can still do the Russian man dance. It's great. I know. I'm like your knees, dude. Like mine would knees not screaming. yeah Yeah. Can you still do a back tut? Have you?
00:19:19
Speaker
A back tuck? Absolutely not. A back handspring? I like to think. I did one on a trampoline like relatively recently. i like to think I could still do it, but also like I don't really know. Let's try it next time to we're together. I'll spot you. I'm so scared that I would break my neck or something. Chris did it into the pool on Friday. He just did a back tuck into the pool. i was like, this man is going to hit his head at some point.
00:19:45
Speaker
What year will it be is just... like, what is he doing?
00:19:52
Speaker
He's crazy. Oh, my God. That man is a gymnast. I was going to say, he should have been a gymnast. He's too tall, though, is the problem. Oh, yeah. He wouldn't have made it. He would have gone like far, and then they they there would have been a moment where they're like, you're too tall for this.
00:20:06
Speaker
you know I mean, jim like male gymnasts are just short kings. It's like the short king convention. How tall? like What's the height? The height? five seven five six like a they're short yeah okay Have you seen those pole vaulters where um they're like penis with the pole?
00:20:28
Speaker
Oh, yeah, that's scary. Imagine. That is so embarrassing. ah would die Isn't it crazy? Sorry, yeah not to like totally go off in a different direction, but us talking about gymnastics and pole vaulting.
00:20:41
Speaker
The Olympics was last summer. Doesn't that feel like a bajillion years ago? God, remember them all on those fucking boats taking forever to come down? Like. And you were there.
00:20:53
Speaker
i was there right before the Olympics. Yeah. We saw all the stuff getting like another lifetime ago. I know. I know. We we thought Paris was going to be the worst part of your year.
00:21:05
Speaker
Right.
00:21:08
Speaker
Nope. Plot. Yeah. Oh man. Okay though. How are we June dude? Like January took 100 years and now we're in June. january took one hundred years and now in june I know. i was thinking about everything I like want to accomplish in the rest of this year yesterday. And I was like, God, I cannot believe it's already

Potty Training Discussion

00:21:30
Speaker
June. like What?
00:21:33
Speaker
and My due date group is already like, what's everyone doing for second birthdays? And I'm like, it's like in two months. Okay. Yeah. So today's episode, we were going to do part two on the peeps and poops potty training.
00:21:48
Speaker
And since we ran out of time last episode that we did this, and we thought we'd bring all the comments and questions that we got from Instagram. Thank you everybody for sending those in.
00:22:01
Speaker
And that we can answer some of them, talk through them. Just once again, giving our experience. We're not professional, but kind of just walking through like how we did things um through these questions. So Candice is going to pull them up.
00:22:15
Speaker
I got it up.
00:22:17
Speaker
Okay.
00:22:22
Speaker
Okay, I feel like this was a common question and it says um showing signs but also kind of not and up against a preschool requirement. Very nervous. So I think this is a tough boundary that a lot of parents face or like in order for them to get into this preschool, they have to be potty trained again. Not an expert.
00:22:42
Speaker
But here's my suggestion. And it's just that like work with them as much as possible at home. And in my opinion, I think the kids actually learn faster and quicker at school. So if you get them to the point where they can go to school in undies and even if they have an accident, which the preschool teachers are like expect. Yeah. They are well equipped to know that that's going to happen. Yes. Like kids are going to have accidents, but to have an accident, like in front of their friends and like with a teacher and like, I feel like, and they're also watching other kids get praised and treats and stuff for going potty. I know that's what happened with Alice. Like Alice came home and she was like, Millie got a, uh, an M and M for going on the potty.
00:23:26
Speaker
And I'm like, oh, wouldn't you like an M&M? And she was like, yeah, i'm going to go on the potty tomorrow. You know what i mean? So I feel like do your best at home, but don't feel like they have to be perfect and like absolutely accident free to go to school. Like the teachers are going to continue like that job for you and your kids are going to learn better.
00:23:46
Speaker
even more with their peers and watching other kids go to the potty. hundred percent a great tape I couldn't tell, like, was the question like, you can't get into this school until they're potty trained? Or was it like, hey, they were wanting to teach them?
00:24:01
Speaker
I think she's like saying that she wants to teach them, but in the kids like kind of showing signs, but also not, but they also kind of have to, cause the preschool is coming. So like, what should they do? yeah yeah Yeah. Um, and, and I mean, I talked about this in the other episode, like there are two options when you're preschooled.
00:24:19
Speaker
does offer the potting training, um it's either like you can lean in or don't. Like if if someone's offering the help, it's like you decide if you want to take it or don't.
00:24:30
Speaker
um I obviously took the help and it was a huge weight off my shoulders. So if your preschool does offer it, like I highly recommend. Yeah, agree.
00:24:42
Speaker
Agree. Yeah. um Okay, there's a lot of questions about like, what is the ideal age for potty training and girls versus boys.
00:24:53
Speaker
um And the truth is, i don't think there's like an exact answer. Like, would you agree? Yeah, I think um just for example, there are kids in Margo's due date group.
00:25:06
Speaker
Granted, they're not even two yet that are they say they already are already showing signs of interest in the potty. So some of them are interested and already going ahead and doing that. And then some of them like but it's not even on their radar.
00:25:20
Speaker
So yeah I think it's just really dependent kid by kid. Like um we will probably likely try in that two and a half week. range once again. like it doesn't matter boy versus girl. I just think that that's what we're going to do again. Yeah. I was going to say, if I like had to give an answer, I would say two and a half is probably the most common.
00:25:43
Speaker
That's about when we started with Alice. But like I said in in the last episode, we had a lot of like setbacks and regressions and like things that happened. and like It was not a linear path.
00:25:54
Speaker
And I think it's just a when your child is like showing signs that they're interested and they're ready. And also like there are outlier like factors like school and stuff that like can or maybe you have like a crazy trip coming up and you want to.
00:26:12
Speaker
Either do it before or you're like waiting until you go to Europe or, you know, whatever the situation is. It's just like it's case by case. And I would say to try not to put too much pressure on yourself.
00:26:24
Speaker
Like your kid's not going to first grade in a diaper. Like they're going to figure it out. And Like give yourself some grace, you know? Yeah. It's not a race of like, oh, my kid potty trained in three days versus my kid took like three months. Like they figure it out and um don't feel bad if it takes a long time. and I mean, we're still in and out, like we said, of yeah having accidents and him being like a whole month without them. So.
00:26:53
Speaker
Yeah. Actually, there's been a development since we recorded our part one that I just wanted to share. Alice has started a new type of regression where every time we get home from going somewhere, she's fine while we're out in undies, fine out and about.
00:27:09
Speaker
Every time we get home, she comes inside and will like go to her room to start to play. And she has an accident every time within the first four or five minutes of being home. And it's like it's like she goes into her, either either into her room or Eve's room and like hides and has a pee accident. And so it's fine. Like we've just pivoted.
00:27:31
Speaker
Like now I know when we're pulling in the driveway, I'm prepping her. I'm like, Alice, you have to go potty. but we're going straight inside. We're going to potty. And I think we're getting through it. But there was four or five days where she was having an accident every single time we got home within the first five minutes of us being home.
00:27:49
Speaker
And I was just like, what is this? Like this never used to happen. Like, Playing is the number one culprit of Graydon peeing his pants. Like, I know if we're going to a birthday party, I need to bring an extra pair of shorts because he will play so hard and into the ground that he'll just pee himself. He'll be like, I can't stop.
00:28:09
Speaker
can't go away. I mean, he did it when we went to Stephen and Caroline's party like two weeks ago. he just I brought an extra pair of shorts because I was like, this kid's going to pee in his pants. And he did. And I was like, mm-hmm, yep.
00:28:21
Speaker
Every time. time And I took him to the bathroom. He just still does it. He's just like so excited. it It's a theme. So funny. ah Yeah. Okay.
00:28:32
Speaker
Um...
00:28:36
Speaker
Okay. How to potty train an incredibly stubborn child? And this person said, AKA my second born. This is tough. This is tough. i Again, not an expert. My take would be like, find that thing that your child is exactly ah obsessed and like would do anything for. it For Alice, it's tough.
00:28:57
Speaker
sweet Like she, she really doesn't care. I could offer her to go to target and buy a toy and she'd be like, I don't give a fuck. I got toys in there. Like, I don't care. But if I offer her a Hershey's kiss or like a chocolate chip cookie, like the girl is a sweetsaholic. Okay. So I'm, I feel like you got to find the thing that really motivates your child and you got to like be constant and consistent with it.
00:29:25
Speaker
um I personally think rewards work better than like discipline in the potty. You don't want them to be afraid of pottying or afraid of accidents. Like anytime Alice has an accident, does it annoy me sometimes?
00:29:43
Speaker
Absolutely. fucking But I typically always try to like take a breath and be like, It's okay. Accidents happen. Accidents happen when we're learning. That's what I always say. Accidents happen when we're learning.
00:29:55
Speaker
And um I try to push the rewards and I feel like it usually works. Yeah. No, I agree.
00:30:07
Speaker
It's so crazy how many people just wrote like, I have no

Parenting Q&A

00:30:10
Speaker
idea. Just please help. Like, Honestly, like I think there's so many different resources out there. Like the, there's the Oh Crap book that people talk about a lot.
00:30:21
Speaker
I think, is it, is it Dr. Becky or big little feelings? One of those has like a potty training course, I think it's up to you the way you want to go about it.
00:30:32
Speaker
I personally feel like the people who say that, oh, my kid learned in three days or in one weekend, i'm that's a lie. I'm going to go out there and say that that is a lie unless you have some like miracle child.
00:30:45
Speaker
I just don't think that's true. i mean, it's like, i mean, maybe they got like the concept of it in the weekend. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. But they they still be peeing in their pants for while.
00:30:58
Speaker
For sure. Okay. This is for you because I don't have boys. But we got a lot of questions about like boy moms. Are we sitting or standing? Graydon sits.
00:31:10
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. He said kind of what I thought. Yeah. I think that's how you're supposed to teach them in the beginning. Like, um, something that Graydon loved when we were potty training is like letting him go pee outside. Like he thought that was so fun.
00:31:25
Speaker
Um, and we even had the potty outside for a while. Like that's how we got him to start pooping. Did I talk about that last time? couldn' you remember oh Oh, about it going outside? yeah like how like he was so like intrigued with the potty outside. like He would pee outside and then he'd go sit on the potty to poop. like That's how we got him to poop. It was like a random thing that he was like, this is fun.
00:31:51
Speaker
so funny. I think also whenever you do start working on standing, I know my husband, when he was little, my mother-in-law told me she put Cheerios in the toilet and you like tell them to aim for the Cheerios like a target.
00:32:05
Speaker
I don't know. I don't have a boy, but but that's just what I've been told. Okay. We got a lot of questions about withholding poop and constipation. I um know in my Q1 moms, like my due date group, there is a recipe for poop chocolate.
00:32:24
Speaker
I don't know if you've seen this. It's like a kind of chocolate treat that you make at home. It has coconut oil in it. It's like a natural... It loosens things up down there and apparently it works wonders. A lot of the moms in my group have used it and the kids gobble it up because they think it's chocolate. um I will post the link to that recipe. I'll get it from them and post it on our stories whenever this episode goes live.
00:32:49
Speaker
um I think it is quite common for kids to withhold poop. Yeah. Um, Alice has done it in the sense that she will wait until she has a diaper on at nap time and she'll poop when she has a diaper on at nap.
00:33:05
Speaker
Um, and again, I just, I default to rewards. If you poop in the potty, you get a bigger reward, AKA an extra piece of candy for Alice. So that's just kind of what I did, but I know this is like a super common problem.
00:33:22
Speaker
Yeah. Agreed. Um, I mean, I talked about that. Graydon did that as well. Anytime he switches teachers, um, he goes through this thing where he's scared to poop, but apple juice works for us.
00:33:33
Speaker
It loosens them up. Amazing. Yeah. Amazing. Okay. This one's so funny. This is from my friend Maddie. How to get my 32 year old fiance to stop pottying in bed when drunk future kids are doomed.
00:33:45
Speaker
Yeah.
00:33:49
Speaker
Oh my God. I love you, Maddie. She, I think she listens and she doesn't even have kids. And that is a true friend right there. I'm going to her bachelorette party in Key West in February.
00:33:59
Speaker
My own, oh, fun. um My only suggestion is um make him sleep in another bed when y'all go out. yeah Or ah you need those waterproof bed liners.
00:34:10
Speaker
Actually put a towel down. literally like a dog. You need a pee pad. Okay. Okay. We got a couple questions of like, when is too late or can you do it too late in quotes?
00:34:24
Speaker
Like if I am avoiding it, will I ruin my child? I just kind of stand by the fact that like every kid is going to like, no kid is going to go into first grade in a diaper, like, or a kindergarten even like they're going to learn.
00:34:37
Speaker
ah There's going to come a point. Like, I think it is important for your child to be around other kids that are using the potty. I know that was a big motivator for Alice to see other kids her age do it and be like, oh wait, I want to do that. I'm a big girl, you know?
00:34:52
Speaker
So I do think that is important.
00:34:57
Speaker
Um, Maybe like more. Yeah. Well, this is a tip actually that I learned from her teacher. um her Alice does this thing when she's sitting where she likes to try and see the pee come out. You know, she looks down, which is so fucking annoying because then she's shooting the pee out of the toilet. You know, she's like she's like rotating her hips forward and like the pee comes out the front of the potty and it's so annoying.
00:35:23
Speaker
Oh my God. So, um, her teacher was like, yeah, she, she kept doing that in class. away put some flower stickers up on the wall in front of her. And I always tell her, look at the flowers, look at the flowers work like a freaking charm.
00:35:38
Speaker
Yeah. So I put flower stickers up on our bathroom and I always say, look at the flowers while she pees. And she looks at them and now she's not peeing at the front of the potty anymore. And I was like, wow, genius. Teachers are so smart.
00:35:50
Speaker
I know. Um, okay. Sorry. One, the last one I think we'll talk about and just like overall, ah we got a lot of questions about was about transitioning sleep with um potty training, which we haven't done yet, but I, we're going to start with nap time.
00:36:09
Speaker
Um, I got waterproof bed liners so that you can just do sheet waterproof bed liner, sheet waterproof bed liner, which a tip Whitney told me.
00:36:23
Speaker
Great for ah vomiting and pee accidents. That way in the middle of the night, you can just strip the top sheet off and like the top bed liner and then you're all set. transition so that the kids yeah don't wake up too much and not go back to sleep. 100%. Yep.
00:36:39
Speaker
um And that's just our plan is to like do naptimes first. I will probably start to like withhold water like the 30 minutes, 45 minutes. Yeah.
00:36:52
Speaker
Like before nap time and sleep time and make sure we're using the potty right before nap and right before sleep. But I don't know. That's a whole journey I haven't been on yet, to be honest. And actually, we discussed that in the other one. And i don't I didn't see any tips come through of when ah good time is for like them to start learning how to hold it through the night.
00:37:15
Speaker
Maybe it's just kid by kid kind of like the same thing with potty training. It's like they'll figure it out. Or. Yeah. I don't know. Yeah.
00:37:26
Speaker
I'm looking through the tips question. Or not like the question box for tips. um A lot of people in here saying the three-day method like worked for them. So. and That's what I'm saying. I think that ah if you really consistently do that within the three days, I think the concept is grasped.
00:37:45
Speaker
So I do think there is ah truth to that. But. We just didn't do that. I mean, doesn't mean I won't do that with Margo or maybe she'll seem a little more curious before that two and a half range. So maybe we'll try it. I don't know.
00:37:59
Speaker
I'll never say never. Because I know our friend Taylor did that and with her every one of her kids and that that worked. Okay. This person said committed to the once you start, do not turn back mentality. And that were like got them through.
00:38:14
Speaker
And that's something I wish we had done. like That's a regret of mine that we just like were, kind of chill about it and put her back in diapers after we flooded. i wish we had like been more like we had committed more. We just were not committed.
00:38:31
Speaker
Well, you went through something. So, yeah. Um, I think that's it y'all. I mean, I feel like this will be a little bit of an ongoing conversation with us. Like I said, we're still very much in it.
00:38:43
Speaker
Um, and I think when this goes live, we should maybe still share some of these tips. Yeah. ah Like on our Instagram stories. Cause some of these are good, but they're kind of reiterating what we've said, you know?
00:38:56
Speaker
Um, but stay tuned. I think in our like catch ups, we can give some potty training updates like as we transition sleep and do those things. Like I think that's a, you know, a good update for us to give.
00:39:14
Speaker
Agree. Love that. And um love this conversation. And I love you. And I hope everyone has a great week. All right. Love you so much. Bye. Thank you so much for being a part of our mom group chat. New episodes drop every Tuesday. And don't forget, the group chat is blowing up on our Instagram page. So make sure you're following along over there.
