Introduction and Super Mario Movie Discussion

00:00:00
Speaker
hi I still never seen the Super Mario movie. What? ah You are. Oh, God. But it's not because haven't wanted to. You don't know where the hell it is. You don't know to find it. I was like, where do I watch it? And I just forget. It was on Netflix, I think, at one point. But I don't even know. I don't know where it is. But anyway. Who made it?
00:00:19
Speaker
Actually, don't even know what studio made it. Was it? Oh, yeah. work Is that a DreamWorks movie? I think it was DreamWorks. Yeah, i think it's I think it is.

Podcast Introduction and CinemaCon Discussion

00:00:31
Speaker
Alright guys, hello everyone. Welcome to the Beyond the Shot podcast. We are your hosts, Melody and rod How you guys doing? yeah How are you guys doing? We are doing... doing okay.
00:00:43
Speaker
Doing too. Yeah, not not too bad. A good day. i'm Not raining in Vancouver, so I always take that as a win when it is sunny here. Because if you have never been to Vancouver, wintertime slash early spring is always just...
00:00:58
Speaker
rainy rain rain rain it's not very fun very seattle like so if you think of seattle it's pretty much the same kind of makes sense pacific northwest ah yeah just pretty rainy but anyway so guys today are going to talk about cinema con cinema con lots of cons coming up here we've got cinema con i think there was wonder con in orlando there's so many cons these days that i kind of can't keep up so when the new one has people are talking about it thank god i follow creators that are going to these things because honestly sometimes i'm like i have no idea that these things are even going on i didn't even know this until not too recently i didn't know and ronnie kind of was talking about it before we started chatting here it was that this is more for
00:01:41
Speaker
the cinema folk for the, you know, people who own cinemas and things like that, not necessarily for the fans. So we didn't get a lot, a lot of information at these. it was a lot of kind of, of some things that we might already know. Some of the cast were there for movies and, you know, to talk a little bit about them. Some, some panels did show with trailers or, or longer clips or something like that, but we didn't really get,
00:02:05
Speaker
anything crazy, crazy new that we didn't already have.

Live-action How to Train Your Dragon Discussion

00:02:09
Speaker
Um, one of the main ones that I think that really, they kind of really showed off was they actually showed the whole movie to how to train your dragon, the live action, which, Hey, that means it's ready to go. This movie doesn't come out until June. So the fact that they were able to just be like, yeah, here's the movie and in its entirety. No, Oh, nothing was finished. you know, like it was like in its full entirety, ready to go. So that's always good to know that movie is ready.
00:02:34
Speaker
um Now, Rodney, I think, has a little bit of a I don't know if it was necessarily like a posing view on me on this one, but I said that i was like kind of excited and you were kind like, well, it's the same thing and it's I don't really know. So I you know, yeah, we kind of had this talk or we we were texting back and forth about this, but I think what it is with me is um I think... God, I'm starting to become... We're we're in episode two and I feel like going to be labeled anti-Disney. I don't and don't want to be anti-Disney.
00:03:10
Speaker
This isn't Disney. No, but still, I know it is. But wait minute. Let me get to my point. Listen, Linda. Let me get to my point, Linda. Let me get to my point. No, the point is these live action remakes things have...
00:03:25
Speaker
um have really, to me, been very jarring and for the most part, very disappointing. i'm a I'm a firm believer of if the original material's there, watch the original material, especially if it's not that old.
00:03:39
Speaker
Like, if you're telling me, like, it's like a movie that's 20 years ago, all right, i'm um I guess I'm okay with it. It's easier for me to accept. Let's put it like that. Yeah. Okay? um disney with their remakes have been less than stellar in my personal opinion um especially those white was good it wasn't i said it was good i said it was okay i said it was okay don't think it was like you know gangbusters and it's clearly not resonating with a lot of people but that's that's more political thing that's a story for a different day
00:04:11
Speaker
But in regards to the How to Train Your Dragon, i felt some kind of way about it because I genuinely really love those animated films. I think they're beautiful. they're they're you you You can look at them and they still look great.
00:04:25
Speaker
Like Shrek, for instance, the first Shrek movie, you look at Shrek part one. And I love Shrek 1. It's one of the best. It's one of my favorite animated movies of all time. But if you look at the CGI and everything, it looks a little, you know, compared everything now, does a little dated. It's like if you go back to watch Toy Story 1.
00:04:41
Speaker
Yeah. CGI there looks dated. How to Train Your Dragon is one of those movies that's just like, wow, this looks beautiful. This looks really good. So when I heard that they were going remake it i was like, oh, why? Why are they doing this? This and that. is And then then you find out, okay, well, the guy that's going to remake it is the same director that directed the animated movie. so like Okay, well...
00:04:58
Speaker
Let's see. And then I saw the trailer for it when they dropped it. And I was like, this looks awesome. This looks really good. But I'm also of the mind where I've just, I guess, I guess the whole Disney remake thing has really kind of soured me on live action remakes of animated movies.
00:05:16
Speaker
And it worries me a lot um because again, these are special movies. The How to Train Your Dragon series is just It's very special in a lot of ways. um There's a lot of social commentary within those movies that we as a society could take and learn from.
00:05:34
Speaker
and it's ah it's just But it's overall, it's just a fun um adventure flick. So for them to come out and say, okay, we're going to redo this. We're going to make this happen. I was worried.
00:05:45
Speaker
But then, you know, I know Mel had texted me and said, hey, listen, they they they showed off the full movie to people. And to me, I'm not going to lie. That's a good sign because that's the studio saying, we're so confident that this movie is good. We're going to show you the movie now.
00:06:01
Speaker
Yeah. So that is a very, very, very positive sign that they did that. They're not hiding the movie. They're not doing anything like that. And that doesn't mean that you because you didn't show the movie, you're scared or you're not. But the fact that this movie is still um is it comes out in May. Right. So still over. No, I think it's June. June. So it's oh it's so it's almost two months away. yeah They said, no we're going to show it off.
00:06:24
Speaker
I think that means something. And thirteen that's a very, very good sign as to where the studio feels, the the director and the producers and the actors feel that, yeah, this movie is good enough to show. Let's show it off. So I'm excited. I'm happy about it. And I want this movie to be awesome because, again, I love those movies. I love those characters.
00:06:43
Speaker
um And it seems from, I haven't really looked into the reactions of it because I didn't know about it. People it's really, really good. A lot of the- are saying really good. That's a good sign. I'll always give, you know, thumbs up to that. Thumbs up. I think um i think it was, a lot of the creators I follow, so I saw Koi Jandrew was there and he said that How Change Dragon is his favorite live, like animated movie like all time. Like it's like his favorite movie. And he said it was so good.
00:07:11
Speaker
Like they did such a great job. Um, so I'm, and I, I usually am pretty, like, I usually kind of really agree with his, like what he has to say, kind of like your Jeremy Jans kind of situation. Right. yeah Um, I really like his takes on, on movies and things like that. Um, and he said it was really good. So I kind trust him and I'm very, very excited to see this.
00:07:30
Speaker
I think they also just released a second like actual full trailer because I think they only released like a, think I think at first they released kind of more like it was a very like a shot by shot kind of thing to the first one.
00:07:42
Speaker
It was more like a teaser. This one's like the actual, like full on trailer. actually haven't sat down and watched you I'm going to watch it here. And then after we're done. um But they were released, I think, yesterday or the day after. I what it was. I just haven't caught up. But um definitely looking forward to seeing that.
00:07:58
Speaker
um i su Those movies are so, so good. i haven't seen them in a long time, but they're so, so good. And I'm very, very excited. I might not watch the trailer. I i think I want to go in as blind as I can because it has been a while since I've seen the first movie.
00:08:11
Speaker
um I think I saw the third one the other day. I think it was playing somewhere. And i was just, or was in someone's house and was playing. yeah I just sat down and watched it. That one was so good. It was very emotional, that one. Yeah, that one is really emotional. good. As a dad, you watch that movie.
00:08:24
Speaker
As a parent, you watch it. Yeah, it's emotional, yeah. But um i don't want to I actually kind of want to go in blank because I kind of like, you know what? Let me watch this movie again through this new eyes, this new lens. And that's the movie that I have marked down because it's a family film. like could Oh, yeah. Mackenzie's going to love that.
00:08:38
Speaker
Yeah, so, you know, and and and I don't know. i feel like I feel like we don't... That's an episode for another day, but I feel like we don't get that many of those types of movies with, like, family to go anymore. So I'm excited about that. think this movie's going to gangbusters at the box office. Oh, yeah.
00:08:52
Speaker
It actually comes out the same day as the... ah Rom romantic movie. The material. Oh, ah the materialists. Yeah. Another Another one that we got. certain Another one. That one looks awesome.
00:09:04
Speaker
That one. we will that's that We'll talk about that in an episode another day, but that's, that's, that I, think I love the director of that movie. She did past lives. Did you ever see Past Lives? No, but I keep talking i keep coming i keep see i keep seeing like clips about it, and I'm like, oh, maybe I should watch this movie.
00:09:20
Speaker
It's beautiful. It's haunting. It's beautiful. It's heartbreaking. It's beautiful. I loved it. Is it English? It's English, but there's a little bit of Korean in there, but it's English. and It is English. Okay, cool. Really, really good.
00:09:32
Speaker
So on to the other stuff that was revealed. um We got... I'm a fan of this series,

John Wick Projects and Speculations

00:09:38
Speaker
Mel. I know you're not into it because you're not into like action flicks like that at this level, but John Wick. We got some... yeah I mean, okay they blew the doors open on the John Wick universe. So we're going to have a John Wick animated prequel.
00:09:52
Speaker
Which is pretty cool. Keanu Reeves is involved. long as Keanu Reeves is involved, you're going to be fine. Because he that that that man embodies John Wick. He is John Wick. And he he lends credibility to anything within that universe. so you have that.
00:10:06
Speaker
You also have the upcoming movie called The Ballerina, which is, um ah how do we say It's a side... It's different. it's's It takes place in the universe. It place it takes place in the John Wick universe.
00:10:19
Speaker
It's kind of like a side movie. what are those called? It's like a prequel, a sidequel. I don't know how you would put It's with Ana de Almas. Oh, she's like she's there. She plays the character, the main character.
00:10:31
Speaker
And it's about a mission that she goes on. Oh, spin-off. Like a spin-off. It's spin-off. That's the word I was looking for. the word. I was like, it's something an S. I couldn't remember the spin-off. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's cool. But if you look at the trailer, trailer looks awesome, by the way.
00:10:44
Speaker
But then there's a big thing in the trailer where it's like she faces off against John Wick, which that right there kind of tells you, OK, so this this doesn't take place in the current John Wick universe, because if you.
00:10:55
Speaker
haven If you don't know, John Wick is dead. so Oh, is John Wick dead? He died in the last movie. Yeah, he died. Oh. Wait, wait, wait. going to get into that. Hold can't believe you spoiled it for me, Rod.
00:11:06
Speaker
You weren't going to watch it. You're not into freaking action flicks like that. I do like action movies. I just, it's sick. I've been telling you about John Wick forever and you still haven't watched it. I know. That's on you, girl.
00:11:18
Speaker
That on you. Maybe I'll watch it like if it was on the plane. Yeah. Yeah. You're like, you're like, you're like my wife that watches, she catches up on, ah on Abbott Elementary on the plane. On the plane. So anyway. um So yeah, you got the ballerina, which looks awesome. And in that trailer, if you find out that the ballerina faces off against the Baba Yaga,
00:11:39
Speaker
Baba Yaga, a.k.a. John Wick. So that's going to be pretty cool to see and see what happens and, you know, how that goes about. So that looks pretty interesting. looks pretty cool. And it's awesome awesome. It's always awesome to see, you know, um a heroine, a female action hero.
00:11:54
Speaker
um And it looks like they did it right. It looks it doesn't look... it it doesn't look um Over the top of force. It looks natural, the movements and how she fights. um One of the things I give, I'm going to give credit to the MCU. Anytime Black Widow fought, it was done in such an awesome way because most of the time Black Widow will fight guys that are bigger than her. So she would fight using...
00:12:19
Speaker
momentum she would always swing top and and force her body down and that causes you know people that are bigger than her to come down and you see that they kind of did the same thing in this in this universe without the character but this is called the ballerina yeah the ballerina oh okay but this is more violent because this is like this is the john wick universe this is uh what what uh what is it um keanu reeves gun that he he he coined it gun gun food so there's a lot of martial arts but with guns It's hyper-realistic violence.
00:12:49
Speaker
Super violent, but it's such an awesome universe, so I'm really excited about that. And then the big reveal was that they're going to do John Wick 5. That's happening. Now, everybody on social media was like, how in the hell are you going to do this?
00:13:02
Speaker
Because in the last movie, he died. Exactly. So there's been a bunch of wild theories stemming from the most obvious, you know, he faked his death, which, you know, a lot of people when the movie ended, they're like, wonder if he faked his death. wonder faked his death, you know, and but the movie ended and it's like you you were OK with it. You're like, you know what? This man went through a journey.
00:13:20
Speaker
That's why I mean, please watch these movies. Watch them. They're so good. But he went through a journey and, you know, it's OK for the character to rest. Let him let him let him go. But then I heard an awesome theory that i'm like, they won't do this because this completely goes into the fantastical realm.
00:13:35
Speaker
So check this out, Mel. Someone said, what if we get John Wick? He wakes up. He's in hell. And he has to battle his way out of hell to get into heaven so he can be with his wife. who The reason John Wick became John Wick is because he fell in love. He met his wife. His wife died of cancer.
00:13:57
Speaker
and And that's how that that whole, that set off John Wick. oh John that was already John Wick beforehand, but the revenge John Wick that we the news was because of the wife passing away in actions.
00:14:07
Speaker
So they're saying, what if John Wick wakes up in hell and he has to fight his way out of hell to get to heaven to be with his wife? I was like, You know what? i I can ride with that.
00:14:18
Speaker
i can I can actually ride with that, but I don't think it's going to happen because it's just John Wick. John Wick is very fantastical because there is a lot of violence and there's a lot of killings happening in the quote unquote real world, but it's not a level of like fantasy where there's magic anything like that. So why I don't see that happening, but I'm not mad at that idea. i think that's pretty cool. So yeah, so John Wick 5 is a big announcement.
00:14:39
Speaker
Um, Again, we have no idea on details or story. I imagine that's going come out shortly whenever they greenever they um officially go into production and we get a synopsis. So that's really exciting. i'm I'm very, very, very excited about that because i love John Wick franchise. So I'm very hyped about that. okay Yeah. And another thing they announced, Mel, this is outside of John Wick, we're kind of moving on, is um they announced that they are going, this is going

Beatles Biopic Announcement

00:15:04
Speaker
to be big. They are announcing they're going to do a full the beatles biopic oh so i heard of yeah i've yeah i knew this oh my god yeah this is huge so um isn't it like five different movies or something well i don't know if it's five all i know was four movies was it there's four movies right how many beatles are there yeah but i'm i'm assuming that there's just gonna be i'm assuming that there's one movie where it's all these actors so the actors are it's paul mescal i thought it was like
00:15:35
Speaker
one No, i'm I'm looking here. It does say it's four movies coming in in in coming soon. um But I know that we got Paul Mescal who's playing um Paul McCartney. the past um We have the guy that plays um ah Johnny Storm.
00:15:53
Speaker
I'll skip it on his name right now. Yeah, he is going to play, I believe he's playing George Harrison. um And you have... I don't know a lot about George.
00:16:05
Speaker
Yeah, he's the... yeah I mean, listen, and if you're not of in familiar with the Beatles... mean, the Beatles was like way... we yeah way, way. But historically speaking, music-wise, they're very, you know, obviously one of the more important artists yeah of the 20th century. They're just very much ah beloved.
00:16:24
Speaker
Like the Michael Jackson... Yeah, the Michael Jackson. That's another thing that's coming out. yeah, the the you know the Beatles is a huge thing. The Michael Jackson. Now, I read something about the Michael Jackson movie that's going to get delayed or something for some reason.
00:16:35
Speaker
Well, that's a really interesting. Yeah, so i don't so let's see what happens. But that's a big movie. The Michael Jackson movie is huge um along with the Beatles. ah Let's see. What's his name? Which one?
00:16:47
Speaker
Excuse me. um No, the but the the guy that's going to play Ringo. um What was his name? Barry. Yeah, Barry... Keegan.
00:16:58
Speaker
Keegan. Keegan, yeah. whatever yeah And then I forgot who's the guy that's playing... I don't know who that actor is. I've seen him in stuff. I just don't don't know. it But you know what? The fact that they casted these guys and they're all there're I'm assuming that they all read together, that means that this is... That's that's that's the unit they're going to go with.
00:17:16
Speaker
The chemistry must have been off the charts. So I hope they do this justice because this could be a massive movie. Knowing the following the Beatles have... And I think they're really, i think also they're really kind of going off of that movie, the Timothy Shamal, uh, Timothy, um, the complete unknown, which was about Bob Dylan and how that was. so haven't seen it, but everyone says obviously was really good. She was nominated for an Oscar.
00:17:42
Speaker
Yeah, it's a good actor. um So I think following that people are like, OK, well, this whole Beatles thing, I think some people are kind of like a little bit like, oh, like, is this really going to be really, really good? And we were like, oh, I think they're just really trying to go off of, you know, a complete unknown.
00:18:01
Speaker
I think somebody i forget who it is. He's somebody on on TikTok that I follow. And she said that she wasn't a huge fan of a complete unknown, but she's also one of those creators that's kind of a little bit always kind of on the opposite ends. And she said she didn't really like a complete unknown because she could not not see Timothy. She felt like.
00:18:19
Speaker
It was Timothy, not Bob Dylan. And that's interesting because the guy was nominated for an Oscar. so I'm like, oh, I don't know. I've never. That's weird. I don't know. I heard. I heard. i heard he's like completely transformed. And she was just like, oh, no, I don't know. I felt like I i think that might be a that might be a her thing. That might be. Yeah. Everything from what I heard, he was fantastic in it. Yeah.
00:18:39
Speaker
So and and and the thing is the actors that we're talking about here, they're all. Really, really great actors. Joseph Quinn to me is a little bit not, I don't really know much about him because I don't watch Stranger Things. I know he's going to in. mean, he was only in there for one season and he, but you know what? Isn't that where he rose from?
00:18:55
Speaker
Yeah. Well, he was just there for one season. That was it And, and that's it. He wasn't, he wasn't in Stranger of Things for like the whole series. Oh, I thought he was always last season that came out was the season he was in and that's it.
00:19:08
Speaker
Wait, so he was in more than one season then? No, no, no. the last The last season was the last season. That was it. he was He was just in that one season. Oh, I thought you meant he was only in the first season. No, no, no, no, no.
00:19:19
Speaker
That's was confused. I was like, wait, what? No, no. The last season, which was like two years ago, think it was. Yeah, know. That was the only season he was in. He was really, really good. He made an impact to the point where he's been cast in so many things. He was in Gladiator.
00:19:34
Speaker
Now he's in Fantastic Four. He's going be a Beatles guy now. He was Quiet Place. He was really good in that. So he's everywhere. He's everywhere. But I personally haven't seen any of his ah any any of his work other than Gladiator 2, which she was good at.
00:19:49
Speaker
it's a fresh It's a fresh face, and we like that. um So i'm I'm with it. Well, that's actually funny. Him and Paul Muskell, who were both in Gladiator 2, are now going to be in Beatles. Real, real funny.
00:20:00
Speaker
jes oh Just like he was also in Gladiator 2 with Pedro Pascal and he's in Fantastic Four. Wow, that's wild. The connective tissue is crazy. Yeah, that is crazy. Another thing that they mentioned, Mel, that they announced, this is in the video game world, but this is huge. I've always wondered why they haven't done this as a film. The Last

Legend of Zelda Movie Announcement

00:20:18
Speaker
of Us 3. No. We're going to have a lot of talk about it. Coming up, folks. telling you, get ready.
00:20:24
Speaker
done um They're actually green lighting. Nintendo is green lighting the Legend of Zelda movie. now Oh, I heard that. That's thing. The Legend of Zelda are massive games.
00:20:36
Speaker
Yeah, they Very huge following. Yeah. If this is done right, Mel, this has the potential to be like and a new Lord of the Rings. I'm telling you right now, Mel.
00:20:47
Speaker
This has the potential to be something amazing. it's So like a live action, not like Super Mario. No, it's not it's not like Super Mario. It's live action. If they cast everything right and they get the right director behind it. Listen, if I am Nintendo or whoever's, i don't know who's doing this one.
00:21:03
Speaker
I am getting on the horn with Peter Jackson immediately. I'm like, what do you want? Here's a, you know, and I'm going to two guys. I'm going to Peter Jackson. I'm going to Guillermo del Toro.
00:21:15
Speaker
What you want? Here's a check. Fill in the numbers because whatever you do yeah is going to come back a billion dollars. I know it. That is a billion dollar franchise waiting to happen.
00:21:26
Speaker
People do not realize how massive The Legend of Zelda is and the following it has. But if you get the director's eye of a Peter Jackson or Guillermo del Toro, oh my God. That movie will do gangbusters at the box Yeah, you're right.
00:21:40
Speaker
Bank! Guaranteed it'll make bank. and that's But they're they're saying that that's for 2027 because I'm assuming that there is no script probably. There probably isn't anything. It's more just a green light thing. So we'll see what happens. Right now. If it's green lit, that means they're probably starting casting and writing. Or there or there maybe there's a script that's being written too. If it's 2027, you don't have that much time. No, you don't. you don't you That means you have to start filming like early, like late 2025, early if you want to move Yeah, yeah, yeah. yeah they're Depending on when in 2027, obviously. 100%. I'd be down for that. I think I've ever played Legend of Zelda, but I know about it.
00:22:20
Speaker
I'm like, oh, it's definitely very like up my alley. Fantasy. it's Yeah, it's fantasy. 100% fantasy. There's romance in there. they could They can do something major. yeah i really you know i really hope studios look into the video game world because there's so many IPs in the video game world that they can do. This is to have to be an episode for another day, Mel, because I can do a litany of of of things that we can talk about, especially with The Last of Us ah Season 2 coming in. and We'll definitely do an episode on video game IPs that I feel could be potential blockbuster films, but that's an episode for another time. For

Anticipation for Superman and Avatar Films

00:22:56
Speaker
another time, yeah. So Mel, I'm going to move on and go to the big one, the big one that I've been wanting to talk about, and that is James Gunn's Superman.
00:23:06
Speaker
Yeah, he's been wanting to chat about this. He's like, he's been holding his tongue to talk about this, y'all. So James Gunn, DC had a bit of their showing and they showed off an extended scene and the extended scene. Slash sneak peek. Yes, that's sneak peek, but it's more of an extended scene. Yeah. If you looked at the scene, it's out, it's available online on you on YouTube and whatnot, so you can go on and seek it for yourselves.
00:23:30
Speaker
It's pretty much almost at the beginning of the trailer where we see Superman land into the Arctic or wherever it is. I don't it's the arctic or North Pole somewhere. And you he's there, he's beat up, he's bloodied, and he whistles. And that's when we see Crypto, the super dog, come in.
00:23:45
Speaker
Crypto Superdog comes in and just, if you're an animal lover and if you're a person that has been around people that have dogs, you know how excited dogs are, especially when they see their owners. The first thing Crypto does is jump and land on Superman. Superman is beat to, it up to just where he's bleeding.
00:24:03
Speaker
The fact that Superman is bleeding to kind of let you know that he got beat up. So Crypto Superdog is jumping on him. He's trying to play with him. And, you know Superman, you can tell that he gets annoyed and, you tells take me home.
00:24:14
Speaker
It's crypto, drags them through the snow. And that's when get our first official glimpse of the for fortress. Yeah. Hideout. And that was awesome. Cool. It was cool.
00:24:25
Speaker
Comes out of the ground. I was like, I i kind of, I kind of got frozen vibes. Oh my God. Let it go. That was awesome. So, you know, you see Crypto take Superman in and that's when you see these robots that come in and take care of Superman, try to help heal him up and And they go by decide to put him into the sun because this is what Superman... Superman, remember, he gets healed from our sun. That's how he gets his powers.
00:24:53
Speaker
That's the reason why um his parents sent him to this um ah solar system because the radiation from our sun is what gives him the abilities he has. has so They use the sun to heal him up.
00:25:08
Speaker
He gets healed. that's when we instantly go back into the original trailer where we see what we saw. It was a very good sneak peek. um And apparently they showed at Comic-Con. I'm Comic-Con. Jesus. sorry.
00:25:18
Speaker
At CinemaCon. Coming this July. Yeah. At CinemaCon, they showed extended scenes from within the trailer, but that wasn't released. um Plus other scenes that were that they showed. Apparently there was like a a scene where you see Superman being interviewed by Lois Lane. I heard that that scene was great. There was a lot of chemistry, which is vital.
00:25:37
Speaker
You need to have chemistry between Roe was slain as Superman. It's an important thing. So apparently that the chemistry was off the charts. We got a little bit more glimpse of Nicholas Holt as Lex Luthor. Apparently he looked very menacing.
00:25:49
Speaker
We got glimpses of other characters, but it wasn't it wasn't much. I think what they really wanted to James Gunn wants this to be almost like a Christmas in July situation where this movie is a gift and he wants to, he wants it unwrapped for everyone at the same time. So you're going to not get a lot of things. I really do feel like in two weeks is what they call Superman day. So that's April 18th.
00:26:12
Speaker
ah He's going to drop a trailer that day for this film. And, um, I don't know what we're going to get in terms of that trailer. I feel like we're going to get a little bit more of the curtain being pulled, but I don't think we're going to get a lot because he really wants this to be an experience that everybody gets at the same time.
00:26:31
Speaker
And one thing I, you know, there was, I sent, sent Mel this post that someone put on Twitter and it hit me.
00:26:45
Speaker
This person's name is James Prescott. That's his, his handle, I believe. And he said, let's be real. This year has sucked so far. So many i know are struggling and are going through things. People are afraid.
00:26:56
Speaker
Some are losing hope. People wonder why we need Superman and he's irrelevant. I'm having trouble with that word. Irrelevant.
00:27:07
Speaker
Irrelevant. Yes. Thank you. yeah well But it's stories like this that we all need to inspire us and give us hope. And then I kind of replied and said, this right here is why super why I think Superman is going to hit differently than any other movie this summer. I truly believe Superman is going to be a massive hit, not just this summer, but for the entire year of 2025.
00:27:34
Speaker
i don't mean I'm not going to get political in this show. This isn't this type of show. We know what's happening right now around the world, particularly here in the United States. And what's happening here in the United States is affecting the world. We know what's going on. We know the levels of just fear that a lot of people are on.
00:27:50
Speaker
This movie, and again, it's a movie. We know it these are these are fictional characters and fictional world. But we watch movies for what, Mel? We watch movies to escape. Yeah. We watch movies because we want hope.
00:28:02
Speaker
We want to feel like we're going to be saved. Mm-hmm. What bigger hero is there than Superman? Superman. This movie is coming out at the most optimal time because this is what we want. We want someone to come and save the day, save us from these people that are out to do us harm, that are not out to look look out for us as a hue as humans, as people of this planet.
00:28:30
Speaker
you know Just look look at the story of Superman. Superman is an alien from another planet. You see what I'm correlating with? Who's the villain in Superman? Crazy, obsessed, egotistical, maniac, billionaire.
00:28:43
Speaker
Connect the dots. yeah This movie is going to... I am so confident this movie is going to make a billion dollars. It's going to happen. oh Oh, wow. big shoot i was i would never make I would never make that thing before, especially with DC. I know how DC isn't Marvel, and it's not supposed to be.
00:29:02
Speaker
But we're entering into a new era. We're entering into a new era, and I feel like this movie is going to hit different. This movie is going to make people feel things, and it's going to give people hope. And if you saw that trailer and you saw that extended scene, yeah you saw where they're going.
00:29:18
Speaker
those days of what Man of Steel wasn't, Mel can tell you, I love Man of Steel. I love Batman v Superman. I love those movies. I love them because I love them for what they were. Not for what people thought they were to love them for what they were supposed to be. Just like you go any movie you watch, you should watch it for what the movie's supposed to be.
00:29:33
Speaker
But you see this trailer and you see what they do with Man of Steel and Batman Superman. This is night and day. Literally. this is They're going for a different feel. They're going for a different feel. They're trying to draw in an audience that's going to welcome everybody.
00:29:46
Speaker
this movie is going to be huge. And I am so excited that we're going to get this and we're getting it at the right time. Because again, there's a lot of things happening and if people are afraid, people are scared, we could use something. We could use a sense of hope, a sense of, of, of just like wonder.
00:30:03
Speaker
And I think this movie is going to deliver that in droves, Mel. I agree. Yeah, I totally agree. I saw the trailer um, and It's something I've always said about James Gunn. I was feeling James Gunn previews and trailers. He always makes you feel something. I will never forget that, um that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 trailer we got.
00:30:22
Speaker
Oh my God. The feel, especially because it was, we knew was going to be the last Guardians movie. Right. And it was, it just hits you in the right, in the right spot. It really, really puts you in the feels. I was like crying hearing the music and I was like, why am I crying? This is freaking special.
00:30:39
Speaker
freaking Superman this is ridiculous this is a superhero and I'm here being like oh my god I feel it I feel the hope I feel everything that this is trying to accomplish and I cannot wait to see this in July I mean July is going to a very um very very busy month for the movies there's a movie every week every week There is a movie. We're going to have to set up budgets for that for the for for July, man. Because I'm like, listen, to I got to look at my movie budget.
00:31:07
Speaker
Movie budget? got to open a little jar. I'm going to start a jar with money and be like, okay, this is a movie budget. Okay. I got small popcorn. I can't do a large popcorn. I got to get small popcorn. Exactly. We're going to be spending like 300 bucks at the movies in July because of how- We still got, in July, we still have Jurassic World Rebirth. Yeah. Yeah.
00:31:29
Speaker
We have the big dad the other big daddy coming out that month, Fantastic Four. Yeah. I mean, July is going to be absolutely stacked. It's going to be- Stacked. my goodness. And no, wait. The other big one, Mission Impossible. Wait, is Mission Impossible coming out in July? No, it's June, right?
00:31:46
Speaker
No, May. May. May. Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah, I know. So jumped ahead on that one. Yeah, yeah I know. It's just July. The big ones are Jurassic World, Superman, and Fantastic Four. Those are the big, big ones.
00:31:56
Speaker
That's going wild. And June is also going be a big one, too, because if we've got F1. So it's crazy because you have f one on June and then... and then superman on july 11th so you know you've got like a week in between be jurassic world comes on july 2nd so those like june and july are going to be big months for the movies we're going to be spending lot and lots of money which hey i'd rather support support the movies support the movies go into the theaters go into go to the theater don't wait for streaming watch it we're talking about cinema con right cinema kind of cinema it's going to the theaters
00:32:31
Speaker
let's go back into the theaters. Let's watch these films. Enjoy. it Listen, I understand about budgets. I get it. I have a mortgage. I have a family. I get it. you know Mel's in the same situation. She has a mortgage. She has bills herself.
00:32:43
Speaker
She has a family. We get it. So you'll be smart about this. Go see a matinee. Matinees is lot less money. A little cheaper, yeah. yeah It's a little cheaper. You're conserving that. And i think a lot of I think a lot of movie theaters are are being very considerate now. They're understanding, okay, we've got to bring prices down on concessions. I think you're gonna start to see that.
00:33:03
Speaker
I really do think that because they need people back in the theaters. They need to fill the seats. And the way you do it is by making it easy for people to come back. yeah And then the big one is obviously how make sure you have really good movies. And I think that this year we're going to be treated...
00:33:18
Speaker
Well, it's the summer. Amazing films, especially in the summer, but I think in the fall too, you know, and and just to wrap this up, um you know, the big movie dropping out to end the year.
00:33:30
Speaker
Good old James Cameron's dropping us off with some Avatar, Fire and Ash. Which I'm out. You know, we love these, you know, I love, i am, I'm in, I am in that weird.
00:33:41
Speaker
I don't know if, I don't if I'm in the majority anymore. I really have no idea how people really feel about avatar, but I am in the, I am in the group. I'm in the bucket of people who love that world. I don't, I never have any, criticism like, I mean, yeah, you have your little criticisms, but like, I'm not a hater of the avatar world. I love what James Cameron has created in that world. They deliver. even if they know some things might be like familiar to something else i don't give a fuck they are so good they're so well done they're so well acted i just i i love those movies and i cannot wait to see where we're going with avatar three um because supposedly there might be some bad avatars so because we haven't seen that yet and i'm very intrigued to see i think we're gonna lose somebody
00:34:22
Speaker
you think we're gonna you think youre like a like You think it's going to be so weird. One what are the top two is going. One of the top two is going. I wonder who it's going to be. Well, I mean, yeah, they introduced the kids. so That theater is going to be, it's going to be, everybody's going to be in tears. I think i think we're going to lose somebody major.
00:34:41
Speaker
Oh, man. That's going to hard, but it's going to happen. Oh, God. Okay, I'm not ready. Okay, anyway. All right. we gotta I think we got to wrap up here soon. Rod's got to head out. But um did you want to do our oh, we didn't talk about Wicked.

Excitement for Wicked Movie and Podcast Conclusion

00:34:56
Speaker
I'm really, really excited for Wicked. Let's hear it real quick. Of course. ahead. Wicked for good. I'm very, very, very, very good. That's the other big movie. As other big one coming out this November.
00:35:07
Speaker
yeah i cannot wait for this. They did release a trailer which hasn't been released to the public yet. So I feel that has to be coming soon. They have to be releasing that soon. And I want Universal to just drop it already.
00:35:18
Speaker
um But yeah, Ariana and Cynthia were there. And supposedly it was a lot better. dark It's definitely the second movie is going to be a lot darker than the first one. The trailer showed a lot of the songs and I'm i so, so excited because as we all know, Wicked part one was, you know, it was a phenomenon. It was a phenomenon. It is a hit. And we know that this second movie is going to bring out the people. It's going to make a shit ton of money.
00:35:43
Speaker
It's going to be really, really good. And I'm i very, very excited to see this. I just, I cannot wait. wait. cannot wait i'm so glad they only made us wait a year because you know they could have made us wait more so i'm glad they did the whole did they shoot it back to back yeah they showed it they or they shot it yeah and yeah simultaneously yeah like the lord of the rings kind of stuff right yeah they did i tell you i've been i've been watching i've been doing a rewatch You showed me a picture. You said, I'm re-watching. It's so damn good.
00:36:14
Speaker
It's so good. it No matter how many times you watch it, you just... you You can't unsee Lord of the Rings. And no matter how many times you see it, it still hits. Like if it was the first time you put it on DVD. Like you're like, ah.
00:36:26
Speaker
edit It's a damn amazing movie. Like you sit down and you're like, I'm home. Like I feel like I'm home. Anytime. Like I'm literally at home. But I feel at home when I watch those films. I'm trying to get Mackenzie into it. Like I was explaining it to her. She was kind of into it. And then...
00:36:38
Speaker
Alfie was like, no, no, no, stop it. Not as much. But she's, she's um we're supposed to do like a big watch, like as ah as a family, like as a group.
00:36:49
Speaker
Oh, okay. We're telling Janice to watch then we're trying to get our other nieces to get involved to watch it. um So we'll see. I'm excited for it. I feel like it might be a little bit much because it is. laura the ri She might be a little too young still.
00:37:02
Speaker
Yeah. um And, you know, Lord of the Rings isn't Harry Potter. It's it's it's not kid friendly in a lot of ways. Yeah. So, but let's see what happens. She was kind of interested in in it yesterday um or with the fellowship.
00:37:15
Speaker
but um But, yeah. I'm sorry. I went off on a tangent there. No, it's okay. it's ah Just to finish off with that. Yes, I am very excited for Wicked for Good. The movie was awesome. ah My wife has seen it six times.
00:37:26
Speaker
I've seen it more than me. wild We break off in song many times here in the house, you know, defying gravity and then popular. we Listen, were we're a wicked household. i love I loved Wicked before the movie because I saw the show. saw the show believe wife has seen it two or three times on Broadway.
00:37:44
Speaker
Fantastic show. Fantastic movie. Wicked for good. ah Definitely in the calendars, watching it on IMAX, watching them the biggest screen possible. I am very excited. yeah And ah what i love about it is I don't remember the play that much. So I'm excited to go back into that world to so remember the second half. Yeah. yeah because To see what happens. Because remember saying, oh wait, this happens. I'm like, oh my God. this is good Yeah, like, because it's true. Like, and in the second half, and I am intrigued to see what they do because as a musical, the second half, which you generally in shows sense to be the more of the,
00:38:17
Speaker
where it kind of falls off, not in a bad way, but it's just never as good as the first act. So I'm very interested to see what they're going to do in this film to really just, you know, bring up the stakes and make it better than what the second half of the musical is.
00:38:30
Speaker
um i know they added music. So I'm, I'm very, very intrigued. I'm, I can't wait to see, I trust John M. Chu because, you know, he's, he's very good at what he does. um And I'm very, very, like I said, you already know everybody. I'm very, very excited to see this.
00:38:46
Speaker
But anyway, the movies yeah um so shall we do our quick little segment of the day here where we talk about a movie or something that made us feel something? Do you want to go first this time? All right, I'll go first this time.
00:38:58
Speaker
um The movie I chose was a movie that I actually, I loved it. And I know, I don't know how people felt about I don't know you felt about The movie is La La Land. I love La La Land.
00:39:10
Speaker
You love La La Land. I do. And let me tell you, i remember my wife and I, we went to go see in the theaters and the music was great. The direction was great. You know, chemistry between Gosling um and Emma Stone was fantastic.
00:39:28
Speaker
But when you get to that ending and you see how, what happens and how it goes down and, and just, it leaves you and leaves you broken, but then at the same time, he leaves you with hope.
00:39:42
Speaker
And there's ah there's a there's the the theme of them two, kind of reliving their romance and reliving everything. It's it's like a fake-out because they you think that they end up together, and they don't.
00:39:55
Speaker
But they don't, yeah. And it's so like, my God. you know cause you You thought you were going to get this fairy tale ending. and it And it doesn't happen. And it's it's just ah so well done. It's so beautiful.
00:40:08
Speaker
One of my favorite songs in that in that ah movie is the audition song where Emma Stone starts singing. And then the thing with that movie that's special to me is it reminds me of you.
00:40:19
Speaker
um Because, you know, I know how you did the l L.A. thing and and you tried your hardest to try to make things happen. And that movie is kind of ah a swan song and ah and a love letter to Los Angeles and the culture of what it is for people to go out there to try to make it as an actor.
00:40:35
Speaker
And it, it, my wife and I, we looked at when the movie ended, we literally said, this movie reminds us of Mel and it hit that because I added you into it. It made it more emotional.
00:40:48
Speaker
So yeah, that movie, the ending of that movie, it, it, it brought me to tears because it was, it hit me emotionally because it made me think of you, but it also made me just think of just what romance is in the real world where not everything is a, is a happy ending.
00:41:02
Speaker
But it doesn't have to be a happy ending with that other person. You can have a happy ending with somebody else. I just thought it was beautiful. So that's choice. It is a nice... yeah La Land to me is one of those films that like I saw at one time, but I wasn't like as in in it And I don't know if I watch it now. Maybe I might feel a little bit different. It's been while now. Maybe i should ri just rewatch it. Yeah, it's been while.
00:41:23
Speaker
Yeah, I just haven't seen it in ah in a while. And I feel if I rewatch it, maybe I'll feel differently. But... um Yeah, a lot of people would feel, I do remember the ending and it being very, like, sad, but also, like, because isn't he, the that movie, isn't he, like, playing at the, the, the bar, the piano bar, and then she comes in, yeah, and then she comes in, but they kind of, like, have, like, a moment where they kind of, like,
00:41:47
Speaker
acknowledge each other, like kind of like they're both like happy in a way. And and then it is like nice because like, yeah, they didn't end up together, but they ended up where they needed to be in a way.
00:41:58
Speaker
So, you know, like that's why it is sad, but still, and still nice. It doesn't, it's not like, Oh my God, I'm devastated. Right. So I do remember that being an interesting take that they don't end up together in the end. But, um, so I didn't really prepare one for what I was thinking, but because for like my segment, but because you were talking about Lord of the Rings, I automatically just knew like what I would, a moment in my head that I thought about. And there's so many in Lord of the Rings. Like there's so many moments in that movie, in those movies that really make you feel something.
00:42:32
Speaker
But for some odd reason, the first one that came to me, and I don't know why, it's not like a big moment in the film. Well, I guess it is a big moment, but it's um it's the moment when... Frodo throws the ring in the mountain and it blows up and then you have all the other characters who are fighting outside and he throws the ring in and everyone looks over and they see that the mountain is erupting and then they're all like there's the camera on all the characters and they're all like cheering like yeah and the camera's like slow and they're like
00:43:05
Speaker
They're all like happy. And it's like, like the culmination, right? All these years throughout this film, right? I don't know how many years it is. That's how many years it is. I think it's three.
00:43:16
Speaker
what think it's like three years. It has like basically has, has gone by throughout these three films. Yeah. Seeing all these characters, like, just so happy that they that the ring is, like, that he did it, right? And then the thing, the volcano explodes, and then you see all of them, like... Like, ah for some odd reason, I always think of um Billy Boyd's face of Pippin, who plays Pippin.
00:43:40
Speaker
um He's, like, so excited. He's like, Frodo! He's, like, has a smile on his face, and then it blows up, and then he's, like... almost devastated because he thinks that Frodo might have just died, right? And you see everyone and you and you have the music.
00:43:55
Speaker
Oh my God, the music glistening in the background where it's kind of like a hopeful, but almost like a sad music. And then you have all the orcs like running away and Doom is like just, Mount Doom is just falling to pieces and they're just like staring. And oh, that scene really just...
00:44:15
Speaker
Yeah, it it makes you feel things. It's kind of just like, oh my God, like he did it. Oh my God. I can't. Oh God. and There's so many scenes. Oh God. I could talk about all the moments. ah Fantastic. Oh my God.
00:44:28
Speaker
ah so, so good. ah Literally I could do every week could be a scene of literally Lord of the Rings. This thiss part of Lord of the Rings made me feel this. And then I felt this and like, oh. oh I mean, I know you and I always have conversations about and cause Sam.
00:44:42
Speaker
Sam has some of the best moments in these films and speeches that are just hit home every year. yeah Every time you watch him, they just hit. Oh my God. But anyway, guys, thanks so much for listening today. I hope you enjoyed today's episode.
