Introduction and Apologies

00:00:00
Speaker
Hey guys, welcome to the Beyond the Shot podcast, a podcast hosted by close cousins Melody and Rodney. And on this podcast, we're going to dive into different topics related to movies, TV shows, and the entertainment industry as a whole. Movies are meant to make you feel something, and both of us want to share those feelings with you.
00:00:20
Speaker
So tune in to new episodes every other Monday, and thanks so much for listening. And now into today's episode. Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that the audio on this podcast is not going to be very, very good.
00:00:34
Speaker
ah Don't know what happened to my mic, but it did not pick up my correct mic and I'm going to sound very far away. It's not going to be the best podcast I have done. So apologies on that.
00:00:46
Speaker
But these conversations were so much fun. I had such a great time discussing these with Rodney. So I hope you guys will just look past the horrible audio on my end and still enjoy the topic of

F1 Movie Excitement

00:00:58
Speaker
discussion. So Rodney has no idea what I thought about.
00:01:02
Speaker
F1 the movie. So this this is going to be a really fun conversation. I just watched it last night. I was lucky enough to be invited to a work event where I got to watch the movie for free, which was nice.
00:01:17
Speaker
um i do, i after watching the movie though, I do wish I watched it on IMAX. I do wish I was in a bigger screen. The movie theater that we watched in because it was a private event was kind small.
00:01:29
Speaker
So the screen was a little small. So we sat down and I was like, oh, this is a small screen. was like, this is the kind of movie theater I want to be seeing this. like I want to be in a really, really big screen.
00:01:43
Speaker
yeah Granted, I still felt the so the effects of the film, but I do, I think I want to rewatch it and a bigger screen for sure. Right. ah But Rodney, I'll let you go first because I know this has been a very, very big movie that you have been talking about, been really excited to watch.
00:02:03
Speaker
yeah um So I'll let you get into it. But just a quick little back story here. Rod and i are really into F1. Like, thank thank thanks to the show on Netflix, which I never in a million years would think I would be into watching racing.
00:02:18
Speaker
Like, that's never been a thing. But Rod told me to watch the show... Formula F1 Formula to Drive on so Drive to Survive. Drive to Survive, sorry, um on Netflix.
00:02:28
Speaker
And I was like, oh, I don't know. Watched it, was hooked on it. Now we've been watching it for the last, like, what, six, seven seasons, I think it has been going on for a while. And we are very big fans of this kind of racing. And, you know, we know all the teams. We know what's going on. Like, we are really into it.
00:02:45
Speaker
And they said that they were going to be making this movie. So we were like, oh, this is interesting. It's being directed by the guy who did Top Gun Maverick, which is a amazing movie. I love Top Gun Maverick. I can rewatch that movie at any point in my life.
00:03:02
Speaker
I, and that is one I can put on at any point. And I love, I actually am mad that I don't have a bigger TV at home because anytime I watch Top Gun Maverick, I always have to watch on a small screen. I'm like, I would kill for a very big TV in my room right now because I love that movie that much.
00:03:18
Speaker
So, We knew this movie would be in good hands, but, um yeah, we were very, very excited to see when Brad Pitt was going to be starring in it. So we're like, okay, this is going

IMAX Experience and Visuals

00:03:29
Speaker
to be interesting. So, um yeah, thats that's kind of our little backstory. We are F1 people, so...
00:03:34
Speaker
going into it, we knew the sport. um We weren't new to sport. A lot of people watching this movie have never watched F1. is like yeah they're I think this was their way of definitely introducing the sport to even a wider audience.
00:03:48
Speaker
and I think it's definitely doing its thing, for sure. but ah yeah Rod, go ahead. Take it away. Let us know ah your your thoughts. so I saw this movie on Wednesday. I saw it on IMAX. I purposely went out of my way because I said I need to watch this on IMAX.
00:04:05
Speaker
Joseph Kalinsky directed, like Mel had said previously, Top Gun Maverick. He did Tron Legacy. He did this movie called Oblivion.
00:04:16
Speaker
I know he did Oblivion. He did Oblivion and he another movie called Smokejumpers. I don't remember the name of it, though. I never got to see that one. So this is a director that knows what he's doing behind the camera. He shoots these beautiful images on screen.
00:04:37
Speaker
And he's pretty much, this movie is shot for it to be watched on IMAX. So I said to myself, I need to watch this on IMAX. And I did. And I am so happy and so glad that I did.
00:04:50
Speaker
Mel, I love this movie. I love this movie to the where I could say this is the best movie I've seen all summer so far. Eh. By far. well This movie is, it's the reason you go to see movies, especially in the summer.
00:05:06
Speaker
It is a summer but blockbuster, loud pleaser. Literally, it's that. It's a crowd pleaser. It's a movie you can sit back, watch, and just melt into the seat because of how fast the images are coming at you, where you can just chew up these characters because they're so interesting.
00:05:27
Speaker
and get engrossed into this world of F1 and just go for a ride. And that's what it is. That's what I actually, I think I loved about this movie is that you can sit back, watch this movie and take it for what it is.
00:05:41
Speaker
Take it for the ride that it is. And it was such an easy ride to get in because first of all, let's talk about, again, the visuals.
00:05:52
Speaker
of I'm a performer of directing, as you guys know. I love directors. And this movie, to me, cemented Joseph Kalinsky as a director, as a master craftsman director that he is.
00:06:03
Speaker
That man has an eye behind that lens, and he can put images on a screen that will just leave your mouth open.
00:06:12
Speaker
I'm going to just go straight to the end. There's a scene in the end of the movie where all we see is Brad Pitt's car and you're getting the point of view of the wing of He's flying.
00:06:23
Speaker
That is... i was looking at that and i was i was my jaw dropped. I was like, I can't believe we're getting this. like We've seen so scenes of cars on a road going fast and you just see the... But there's something about how it was shot and how fast it was.
00:06:40
Speaker
and And it's like you felt the speed without being in the car. And it was everything. It was the shot. It was the score. It was the setup of the shot. And like you said, Mel, it was the word, he's flying.
00:06:53
Speaker
Like, it's just, it was beautiful. It was beautiful. The racing, the action, the cameras on board of the car. That's the thing people got to understand.
00:07:05
Speaker
what you When you see this movie, That's not CGI. Those are cameras on the car. The camera's actively moving on the car as they're driving in these rockets. Because let me tell you something right now.
00:07:21
Speaker
F1 cars are literal rockets with wheels on it. Okay? So that speed, that power, the precision, everything there. Everything outside of those accidents, which I hope the accidents were for CGI.
00:07:35
Speaker
But... Everything was shot for real. That's unbelievable. Again, and and how Mel prefaced before, shot by the same guy that directed Top Gun Mavericks. So you saw all those shots with those jets and how they had the cameras on the actual jets.
00:07:52
Speaker
Well, he said, well, if we could put a camera on a jet, then we could put a camera on F1 car. He did it, and beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
00:08:04
Speaker
I love this movie from beginning to end. Again, I'll say it and I'll say it again. This is your quintessential crowd pleaser. This is a movie that you could watch and you won't be disappointed because there's no reason to be disappointed because of the fact that you're in there and you have these moments of cheering. I was cheering.
00:08:24
Speaker
i was cheering in my seat and I wasn't the only one.
00:08:29
Speaker
Again, loved it. I loved it, Mel.
00:08:35
Speaker
i knew yeah i know I knew you loved it. um i I've been coming to grips as to like how I really, really felt about it. And I think it's because I wanted to see it on a bigger screen.
00:08:46
Speaker
But after I got out of the film, like I went, um it this was a work event, and it was a Las Vegas

Teamwork and Realism

00:08:53
Speaker
work event. um And they were able to show the movie you know early through for us, because a lot of this movie, there is a Las Vegas portion.
00:09:02
Speaker
A lot of it was filmed in Las Vegas, so um our Las Vegas event show groups, whatever, tourism board, put up this event for us travel Asians to watch the movie.
00:09:13
Speaker
And we had, like, the really nice recliner seats. It was, like, the ones where you can eat at those kind of movie theaters. And it was great. And, you know, going into this movie, I was already expecting it to be really great because everyone had, whoever seen it, has been, like, over the mood, like, chatting about how good this movie was.
00:09:32
Speaker
And I was really, i was very, very excited. And I was, you know, and, to my don't know to my what am I trying to say like as I thought it was very good I went into it with high expectations and they were all very really really liked this movie I did love it but I feel like want to watch it again there's a part of me that wants to watch it again just to kind of experience a little bit different on a bigger screen because I felt like the smaller screen kind of hindered it a little bit
00:10:06
Speaker
um Yeah, but those scenes in the car, I was i felt like I was holding on to my seat because I was like I felt like I was in the car. i felt everything like the turns the like, oh, my God, what's gonna happen? Oh, my God, there's gonna be an accident. Oh, my like, literally, like, holding on to dear life. I was like gripping onto my seat because I just didn't know.
00:10:26
Speaker
what was going to happen. I'm like, is someone looking off at the car? Is he going to make the race? Who's going get in front? It was so, like you said, like beautifully, beautifully shot. I can't, I still can't believe that this stuff is real. Like, I'm just like, what, what, how are we doing this? Like what, how was this filmed? And it's kind of just like, you know, when you watch Top Gun Maverick, like how are they filming this?
00:10:49
Speaker
Like I need to see a behind the scenes because I, I'm still just like, what like Brad Pitt driving um what's his name Damon Damson yeah da dameson dameson Damson Damson Idris Damson Idris loved him love love him love him um I mean I think they were both I think everybody in this movie was I think yeah everybody and the ensemble of this movie was was top notch great top notch um Javier Bartem um oh I loved him I loved him yeah he did
00:11:20
Speaker
And even Brad Pitt together, they had really great chemistry. Oh my God. They were very, very good to watch. And i mean he's also a fantastic actor from Spain, which is ah always nice to see. It was, yeah, fan fantastic work um from everybody in this cast. I really believed it. And, you know, I think this movie, and it's actually something just like a side note that want to talk about, but as someone, as us, you know, we watch the sport of F1, but I don't know all of the rules.
00:11:49
Speaker
I'm not like I know the rules I know everything like that like I watch the sport I enjoy it I watch the show I enjoy it um This movie, I think, did a really good job at like highlighting what it is to be in F1, number one, what it demands of you as a driver, as a driver i said team. I think this at this this show this movie really highlighted how much of a team sport this is, how everyone has to work together in order to...
00:12:20
Speaker
you know in order to win order to win a race all of these different components have to be working you have to have the right car you have to have a team that is precise and you're not spending any time at that pit spot because if you are you're fucked you know when it starts off and you know the girl messes up and i'm like oh my god like i understood What that meant. I was like, oh, fuck. This is bad.
00:12:41
Speaker
This is bad. This is bad. This is bad. yeah um You have to have the principles talking with the technical director, talking to the driver, and all these people are saying, don't do it. No, just do it. no what There's so much to this. and I love that the movie really did kind of really reflect that.
00:13:01
Speaker
It is a team. This is a team sport. Even though there are two drivers who, you know, are on the same team and they do want to be better than the other. They want to win. They want to be first. It is still a team sport. There are still two drivers and there is a team that needs to win the Constructors' Championship. Yeah.
00:13:17
Speaker
You know? um Now, the one... There's one... There's still two things I want to talk about that I don't know if necessarily had a problem with, but just, like, to some things that were kind of were...
00:13:30
Speaker
little iffy for me is one I couldn't I and me and my friend one of my other friends who went with me to the event she's also into F1 and she was like don't is that stuff allowed or is it just for the movie like all that stuff that Brad Pitt kept doing to like fuck up so that um what's his what the characters names fuck Sonny Hayes and Joshua Pierce and Joshua Like he was doing so Joshua could stay in the lead.
00:13:58
Speaker
Remember when he's like, okay, fine. I mean, why make this a team just going to continue to fuck up in the back here to keep him. I'm like, can you do that at F1? Or like, I would think you would get like crazy penalty for everything that he was doing. And like they would eventually start to figure out like, oh, he's doing this on purpose.
00:14:16
Speaker
i I feel like being that he did it in the race, maybe they they maybe they penalized him. I don't know. i don't know. You know what? There was like those little things where I was just like, I don't know.

Character Development

00:14:30
Speaker
Probably, probably not.
00:14:31
Speaker
The way I see it is this. It's a movie. yeah Yeah, it's a movie. It's a movie. Watch it for for the movie that it is at that moment. You know, and... and I don't know. i i get I get where you're coming from because i was as I was watching the movie myself, I thought about i was like shit.
00:14:49
Speaker
I mean, he's going to get penalized like you know like crazy for for doing this. um But um I did like the fact that there was one part when it happened and then the racing stewards looked at it. But then again, that was in the last race where his wheels didn't come off.
00:15:05
Speaker
So he wasn't technically penalized for it. But i I liked it in the aspect of what it meant for the movie at the time that it happened.
00:15:16
Speaker
it served the purpose It served a purpose. It served a purpose. It wasn't just something that was done. It served a purpose and it served a point. So yeah, I could see people's gripes with that. Like, oh, well, that's not allowed. It's not really.
00:15:28
Speaker
Again, it's a movie. but I don't know if it's allowed. It's a movie. It could be. i I have no idea. It's a movie. My idea was also thinking, I was like, I feel like.
00:15:38
Speaker
I felt the movie did a really good job at kind of like really showing what F1 is like. So I feel like they would try to keep it as, you know, straight to the actual sport than like kind of narrowing off and like making up rules and shit.
00:15:51
Speaker
But again, like that's just me because I like watch F1, right? That's just different. Like nobody else probably was thinking about that. Like since we know and watch the sport, we're probably like, well, is that lot? But whatever. It is a movie and it did, like you said, serve its purpose.
00:16:04
Speaker
Now, my second, and it wasn't a gripe, but it was like something that I just, like, it was very interesting. And and you had brought this up. I wasn't i think you brought it up outside of the conversation we started here um about Brad Pitt's character being this, like, lone wolf just wanting to race, goes from race to race and just does things.
00:16:23
Speaker
I honestly don't know I liked that personally. Like, i don't I liked his character. i thought it was, it kind of gave me a little bit of, like, Tom Cruise in Top Gun, like one, not necessarily Maverick, because he was a little bit different, like that old guy going back to his thing, but also like just and almost like an asshole, right? Like like very similar vibes.
00:16:47
Speaker
But I guess to me, the way the movie ended threw me off. i don't know if I liked the ending of this movie. Um... the The ending threw me off because I was like, okay, there's a couple of things we haven't.
00:17:00
Speaker
So you're telling me he won this race and now he's just like, all right, doing what want. I'm just going to go race. I'm like, wait, what? Are you not part of the team anymore? You just wanted to win one race and then you were like, okay, bye, I'm gone. Well, that was the last race of the season. That was the last race of the season, which is true. So to me, it makes sense. And he was contracted for the rest of the season, for the second half of the season. So technically, his contract is up.
00:17:24
Speaker
Oh, I guess you're right. I didn't think about that. Remember, Javier Bande said, yo, we're halfway we're halfway done with the thing or whatever. I just, you know, we I want to finish strong and try to win race. guess you're right. i forgot about that. So technically, his contract is done.
00:17:38
Speaker
Technically, his contract is done. But, yeah, it just kind of it threw me off a little bit. I was kind of like, oh, but so he just goes from race to race. like But, okay, this was the main thing that they did not touch upon, and it really, really bothered me.
00:17:55
Speaker
was I thought the way this movie was going to go was at the end of the race, he was going to be like, OK, I'm retiring. Because they showed clear signs of this character having vision issues.
00:18:07
Speaker
They clearly showed his body is not in the best shape. But they never addressed it to the point where it was like, oh, shit, like this person is not going to be able to drive for that much longer.
00:18:18
Speaker
That personally, I didn't like that they didn't focus on that enough. I think it was, I think I did, because if you were going to talk about it, then why show it to us? Like, why show us when he was in the car, he was having the vision issues?
00:18:32
Speaker
Because clearly he's still like fucked up from his accident where he had the surgery with his, like, he's paralyzed, all that stuff, right? And then you see him right before that last race, get in the car.
00:18:45
Speaker
And there's a couple times he has vision issues. thought that was going to play ah an actual role in this movie. And it never did. Nothing ever came of it. And I'm like, why did you show me that then?
00:18:55
Speaker
was the point? I think it's to show. what did What did that show? Other than the fact that, like okay, he can't race that much. I think it maybe showed that, you know, that that injury that he suffered in that accident, not the original accident when he was young, but the accident he had recently, he was he still he was still feeling the effects of it. I think that's what that felt like.
00:19:15
Speaker
I also feel like... Oh, you think that was from the recent accident? Yeah, I don't think that's from the... No, I think that's from the recent accident. don't think that's from the other... Because that was so long ago, that accident. That when he was like... He was like in his early 20s or something. So... Oh, I thought it was... i thought it was all connected.
00:19:32
Speaker
No, no, that... Because then like, it's just like as he's getting older, like his vision is just getting worse. Yeah, I mean, granted, yeah, he's... But but but that's part of it though. He is old. They didn't hide the fact that he's like a...
00:19:43
Speaker
57-year-old, whatever, whatever, coming back to racing. They didn't hide that. He did have a major accident. You know, he's 57. He's going to have after effects from that accident. and And, you know, that accident wasn't that long ago from from that race to...
00:19:59
Speaker
to the one that he had in Bahrain. The one where he got hurt. i don't think I don't think it's that big of an issue because I just, to me, it didn't take me out of the movie at that moment for me to be like this. like I thought, like I did think like, oh shit, you know, like this guy is like severely hurt or whatever or something. Like there was a part where, remember when he went into, when they pitted on that last movie Right at the last. Yeah, he was like freaking out. He said, no, I'm not going to get out. I was afraid that like, oh, shit, like what if he just can't stand up because he's like really fucked up whatever.

Speculations and Sequels

00:20:31
Speaker
He doesn't want to let everybody know.
00:20:33
Speaker
And then obviously we see at the end he wins. He comes out. I just think he was probably dizzy from everything. I think it's a combination of he's he was still kind of recovering from the race. And he's one of these guys where.
00:20:45
Speaker
But but, Rod, why they have to show that? and I don't know. It didn't serve purpose. That to me is what bothered me. And not to the point that it took me out of the movie, but it was definitely something I kept thinking about because it happened. They showed it more than once.
00:20:59
Speaker
And to me, I'm like, if you're if it's not going to serve the the purpose at all, then why show it? Like he didn't talk about it. He didn't do it. It was just like, yeah, I don't know. I don't blurred.
00:21:10
Speaker
its tim I don't know the visual on it. It wasn't needed. I don't know. I don't know why it was neat or why they did it. All I know is... i Well, I think it's just, again, I think purposely... Personally, I think it was they were trying to show that, you know... He was... Yeah.
00:21:26
Speaker
There it is. That's what it is. He was vulnerable in this race. He wasn't the... Because all through this movie, we saw him be this really calm, cool, collected dude who's just... you know But then it was it was it was that where we're like, oh, shit, you know this is a very important race, and and this guy is not.
00:21:44
Speaker
And it's it's technically, it's stakes. it's yeah telling us It's telling us that that he's this you know this guy who who who we've like watched be successful coming into this into this sport and has done fairly well.
00:21:58
Speaker
um he's vulnerable now. He's vulnerable now. and it's kind of to it's kind of to It's almost to ground us. it's almost it's a it's a You know what it was? It's a trope to trick us as the audience to be like, oh shit.
00:22:10
Speaker
It was to set us up. It was to set us up. It was to set us up for the ending. Because granted, you could be like, oh well, I knew the team was going to win. Well, technically you didn't know who was going to win up until that ending.
00:22:26
Speaker
You know what I mean? So... um Are we doing spoilers? I think so. yeah Spoiler alert. Spoiler alert to the fans who are listening right now because I'm going to go into spoiler territory. In case you haven't seen it, stop listening and then watch the movie and come back.
00:22:44
Speaker
So the movie ends where and tell me if I'm wrong, Mel. At that moment, you're like, holy shit, Joshua Pierce is going to win this fucking race.
00:22:55
Speaker
He's racing, which I fucking love that scene. Him and Hamilton fucking. I was wondering, I was like, were any of the actual F1 drivers driving? um i don't know.
00:23:06
Speaker
Well, all I know is that last season, they this is why this movie felt so real too. During last season in F1, they were shooting the movie along the same time that the races were going on.
00:23:19
Speaker
Yeah, that's what it seemed like. I mean, you could also see, like, the old teams. It was kind of funny. I was like, oh. Yeah, know. Checo. Checo. I know. Checo. I know. Checo. was like, why? Yeah, Checo.
00:23:30
Speaker
Checo's going to be racing for Cadillac next year, though, so it's all right. He'll be Oh, okay. Yeah, Cadillac's coming into f one so he's going to be racing into the So anyway, um I don't know if they did. kind of want to say they did, especially knowing that like Hamilton is involved. and to the to the to the Yeah, he's a producer.
00:23:47
Speaker
And to a certain extent, F1 as a sport was involved. So I'm assuming that some drivers were probably um driving. But again, i don't think it matters. so No, no, it doesn't.
00:23:58
Speaker
And that's the thing. I think, I think one thing that I was wondering myself is like, are we ever going to have moments where we have these drivers come on screen and stuff? And, and as the movie progressed, I didn't care about that.
00:24:10
Speaker
I liked that. We saw the drivers in the background. We saw them when they were doing the national anthem. I liked that. We saw them, but the focal point of the movie was about the, um, the AXG, uh, what AXP team.
00:24:21
Speaker
Yeah. Um, it's It's about them. And that's what I like. That's what needed the attention. I feel like if you would have had the other drivers in it, it would have been too much... Like if they showed up actually like Hamilton. like they actually showed That's what I liked. yeah And you know I was wondering too. I was like i was watching the movie. I'm like, damn. So we haven't had a moment where they've highlighted Hamilton. I'm like i'm so surprised.
00:24:42
Speaker
And I thought maybe maybe Lewis was like, you know what? um I'm producing. I just want this to be the focal point. I don't want to be... But then we got at the end where we didn't see him visually, but we saw his car. And that was cool because I was like, oh, shit. This is like, quote, unquote, the last boss. The last boss is Lewis Hamilton. And again, to go back to what you're talking about, Mel, is up until that point, you thought Joshua Pierce was going to win that race. like, this is Joshua Pierce's race. So when the accident happened and you're like, oh, shit. And then you thought about Sonny. Like, oh, shit. Sonny.
00:25:11
Speaker
At that moment, like, oh, shit. Sonny's going win this race. But, and this is where the setup You're thinking about, oh, shit, but this guy's not healthy. This and that. So that moment where he's doing this race, it made you and made your question, is he going to win or is he not?
00:25:27
Speaker
And then that's when we get that beautiful scene of him. Which I knew it had it had to happen, though, because they said to her. And then she said he's flying. He's flying, Because remember what he said to her? Yes. That's why Amos is callback.
00:25:39
Speaker
like, this has to happen. Well, I knew that that meant that was going to happen at some point because he's yeah talking about like, I hadn't felt that in a really long time. And I want to feel that again. And that's why they gave us that whole thing of him being blurry. it's to It's to put us in that situation as an audience of like, oh, I don't know if this guy's going to win. I don't know if he's going to finish this race.
00:26:01
Speaker
Yeah. so cut To me, that's what it did to me. was like, oh, I don't know. So, yeah, again, this is why I love this movie. This movie did so many things the way it needed it to.
00:26:12
Speaker
And to go back to what you were talking about with the rules and all that situation, remember this. Remember this. This movie, as much as you said, oh, this movie might draw fans into F1, and it probably will.
00:26:26
Speaker
But this movie is made for those types of people. This movie is not made for fans. This movie is made for people that don't know anything about F1 or may know a little bit of it. Yeah.
00:26:39
Speaker
So this is to draw a brand new audience. Brand new audience. So that brand new audience, they're going to go into F1 and they're not going know the difference. this was just this was This was a gateway drug into that world. So, yeah you know, this is what that movie... This is what this movie is about.
00:26:59
Speaker
It's about bringing in a general audience. General audience isn't going to know. General audience... This is one thing this movie did well. And again, you said it. And it's almost what Drives to Survive did. It taught us about...
00:27:11
Speaker
F1 as a sport. It taught us about, you know, this is a three-stop race. This is two-stop race. Yeah. We're going to start with these tires. We're going to have these tires. It gave you enough to have enough knowledge as to what you're watching.
00:27:25
Speaker
And that's what I think this movie did so well and so beautifully. Again, I have a... This is this the best movie I've seen so far this summer. It did its job. It was a fucking crowd pleaser, man. It was a crowd pleaser. It gave you everything you want.
00:27:42
Speaker
when you go to the When you think about summer blockbuster movies... popcorn flicks. This movie is it. In droves. In droves. the The characters, and I want to go back to the characters.
00:27:55
Speaker
Sonny Hayes, Brad Pitt's character. Just so freaking cool. Like, that's the type of character, um you know, full disclosure, I want to go see what with with my best friend Lou. And and you know He and I, we're we big Brad Pitt fans. We love his his characters that he's played through. He's always played these really cool characters, very interesting characters.
00:28:13
Speaker
And this is another one. we're like, yo, this is another one. He's so freaking cool. Everything. The way he looks, the tats on his body, the way he carries himself, that lone wolf type thing. He is the quintessential cool character.
00:28:26
Speaker
that yeah every guy says I want to be that. Every guy, every guy, me included. Everybody's like, I want to be him. I want to drive that raggedy van he has. I want to live this life.
00:28:37
Speaker
And that's why I said about the end of the movie, I love that. He's like, he's just onto his neck. It's like, it reminds me of this old show called Kung Fu where Kane, he's going around he's and he's like trying to find his brother. And he and every place he goes in, he finds like a he finds a purpose to to to help people. you know It's like, that's what Sonny Hay, he's literally that. He's just that. he it's It's almost like one of those old cautionary tales that they tell that's legendary. Like, oh yeah, yo there was this one guy who came into town and he was the best of the best.
00:29:07
Speaker
And he came and he won this race that was unwinnable. Oh, what happened to him I don't know, man. he At the end, he left. And, you know, some people say he's still racing out there. That's what Sonny Hills is. He's a legend.
00:29:18
Speaker
He's literally a legendary story that they're going to tell throughout history. And I love that. I think that's so freaking cool. And I also think, Mel, that... it's It's what Javier Bardem said. Again, shouts to Javier Bardem, another, just such a cool freaking character, man. Everybody, first of all, let me just say this.
00:29:38
Speaker
Everybody in this movie looked freaking great. They're all beautiful people. Handsome, good looking, beautiful, sexy. They all looked, Javier Bardem looked amazing. Damson Idris looked so freaking cool. Everybody looked great.
00:29:52
Speaker
yeah But there was a line, that um That Javier Bardem's character said, um who owns, who's the who's the who's the co-owner of the team, who's like, I guess, yeah, he runs everything.
00:30:04
Speaker
He told him when he ran into Brad Pitt at the beginning the movie, he said, right when he was about to leave, remember he said? He's like, just remember, F1, when you win, you're the only one that can say you're the best in the world. Yeah.
00:30:18
Speaker
Mel, he won. He's the best in the world that night. where else what else What else does he need? What, to come back? and No. That's it. he got He got what he needed from that. He got his action.
00:30:32
Speaker
He got that moment that he was looking for. Which he said he when he told him that he was off the team. He's say no like, no, I need this. Yeah, he got it. And that's what I'm saying.
00:30:44
Speaker
i don't think I don't think it was for him to come pun come back next season. i think I think that would be more unrealistic. Because then that's when you'd be like, well, you're not you're not you're not at the healthiest part of your life right now.
00:30:56
Speaker
um You know, you technically are an old guy. There's a reason why old people that are of age don't race anymore. There's reasons for this. So I think if it would have ended, we're like, oh, coming back next year to the team. Yeah.
00:31:07
Speaker
Realistically speaking, i don't think I don't think it would have worked at that moment. I think would have eh. Plus, who knows what they're going go with this story. I've heard rumors, because this movie was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
00:31:21
Speaker
I've heard a lot of rumors that... Jerry Bruckheimer in the 90s did this movie with Tom Cruise. We're talking about Tom Cruise with Top Gun called Days of Thunder, which is a ah NASCAR um ah movie, which is really good, by the way.
00:31:34
Speaker
If I were you, Mel, I'd look it up. Very good movie. um So there's a lot of rumors of them possibly doing a Days of Thunder Part 2. And the rumor the rumor is that there's they're thinking of maybe doing something where where Sonny Hayes comes into that. And it's like the movie's about them two being rivals. Right.
00:31:52
Speaker
Like Tom Cruise and... Yeah. And Sonny Hayes. Yeah, Brad Pitt. So, and I did that. i'm like, that's kind of fucking cool. Maybe that's why he was at the premiere. know We don't know. don't know.
00:32:06
Speaker
The plot thickens. Well, not really. Listen, Tom Cruise loves movies. hill He's in every premiere. That man will be everywhere. Anything that has an opening screen, he loves movies. But again, i love that. I love that at the end of the movie, we see him go to the Baja 1000, which is another legendary race.
00:32:22
Speaker
you know that that that that isn't made for everybody you know that's a thousand fucking miles and and you're you're in the middle of the desert in in that type of vehicle and that kind of four by four type thing you know in extreme heat and i loved at the end where the guy the yeah the the old man the and the yeah and the guy he says i'm like oh we know we don't we can't really pay much and he's like i don't care about that he's like i'm about the race i was like That's what it's about.
00:32:48
Speaker
it's It's what it's about. And I like that. To me, I like that. i and And again, that's what adds to the legend of Sonny Hayes. He's he's that. He's those cautionary tales. He's those tales that we that you hear people pass down generation about the guy or the girl that comes into town and changes everybody's fortunes.
00:33:06
Speaker
And then the next day, gone.

Controversies and Team Dynamics

00:33:10
Speaker
No, and that goes like you said that really well. It definitely made me think about some things for sure. That's why I said I really want to watch the movie again.
00:33:18
Speaker
want to watch... You know how much... If I could, I'd go watch this movie again. I'd go watch it today again. i loved it that much. I really want to see this movie again. yeah I want to see it again. I loved it. What I also loved about the movie, I will say, is that I loved the parts where they were racing.
00:33:34
Speaker
That was the... like i think The whole movie was like... You had some moments where they were out of the car. I'm like, let's put them back in the car. I love hearing them like bicker on the thing and and making the choices. Like I loved that aspect. I loved seeing the actual filmmaking of the cars, that the the shots of the cars.
00:33:52
Speaker
I liked that more than when they were like just in a room talking. I did like the the poker scene. That was cool. That was a a good scene. Cause it was like her way of being like, all right, what can we find in common with these two? Right. Where can we get them to like understand each other?
00:34:09
Speaker
And, you know, and I think that, you know, Joshua Pierce's character, like, being, like, the foil, right? Being the opposite, like, but also not being the opposite, where you find, like, they find a common ground, and he actually ends up learning a lot from Sonny by the end.
00:34:24
Speaker
You know, like I liked seeing that. I thought he was really funny. I thought he was, like, I thought they were good opposites. They were. They were very, very good opposites. They were. They worked, both actors, obviously, also worked really well off of each other.
00:34:38
Speaker
now This is just two things. Hold on. Let me to make sure i don't forget. so i don't know if you heard, but Simone Ashley was supposed to be in this film. Who's that? From Bridgerton.
00:34:50
Speaker
so I'm not familiar. did you watch I'm not familiar. Did you watch the second season of Bridgerton? No. No. So Simone Ashley was the lead in Bridgerton season two. And she was she had whole on role in this movie.
00:35:04
Speaker
Okay. they cut they cut it. to literally like a five second cameo, which you see in the movie, she's in it, they show her face like really quickly. Supposedly she had a full on role in this movie. She was supposed to be like a love interest to Joshua Pierce's character.
00:35:20
Speaker
They filmed it, she was in it, and then at the end they cut it. And obviously, you know, when when you make movies, things have to get cut. And people have been, like a lot of people on TikTok have been under an uproar about how upset they are that they're cutting people of colors roles it's big thing people have been really upset that they cut simone ashley from this movie and and i was like a lot of people it's interesting some people are even boycotting the movie they're like i'm not gonna watch it because they cut simone ashley and i don't like that they're cutting roles from like people of color like it's just not fair whatever like they shouldn't be doing this whatever people's opinions so while watching the movie i was like okay well
00:36:01
Speaker
I saw her for that split second. I thought she was going to have at least a speaking role. Nope, they cut the whole thing. She was in it for like, they just showed her face. like It was literally like five seconds. like She would have been a person in the crowd.
00:36:13
Speaker
It was that. And she like was seen filming this movie. So after the movie was over, I was thinking about it. And I was like, you know what? I totally understand why they cut her from this movie. Because there is nowhere, where there is no place in this movie that they could have added an extra storyline.
00:36:31
Speaker
Like, if they would have added this, like, love and trust storyline, I think... Okay. Yeah. I think it would have been, like, way too much because you already have Brad Pitt's, like, kind of, like, love story-ish. Yeah. story i yeah in the like and you And then you also have, you know... da did dickck What's his name? Damson Idris. Damson. I don't know I said it with a demon. Damson Idris' character, like,
00:36:59
Speaker
If he also had a love interest, like, this movie would have, like, just... It'd be too much. It'd be too much. So, like, I completely understand, like, why her character was kind of... If you didn't tell me this, if you didn't tell me this, I wouldn't have known.
00:37:12
Speaker
And I don't see anything... I don't see anything there. Honestly, I don't. I don't... i don't It doesn't... don't think... it wouldn't It wouldn't have served a story. It wouldn't have served a purpose. Because my thing is this. i and I don't want a love interest story because even the Brad Pitt angle of it, it isn't even really a love story thing.
00:37:31
Speaker
It's just that they ah hooked up and... They have a connection. They have a connection, but it's not like... It's not the overlining kind of draw of the story. it's just love story. So that's not... That's barely... That's actually barely a love story, to be honest you.
00:37:44
Speaker
I like... with With Damson Idris' character, Joshua Pierce, I like that his conflict is the fact that it's the it's it's the team. It's him trying to to be more of a team player.
00:37:57
Speaker
I like that. To me, that's what was more important, what what was most interesting about his character. I wouldn't want it to be about a love interest. No, because I feel like we've gotten a bunch of movies.
00:38:08
Speaker
We've gotten a bunch of movies like that about about athletes that have ah a love interest. that's like We've done that before. why why Why are we treading that again? You know what I mean? Let let the let the um the interesting thing about this character be his focus on being more of a team player.
00:38:26
Speaker
Because that's the one thing that they did. They established right off the the beginning this movie. Which, again, he did he's a he's a very, very good actor. Phenomenal actor. That, remember, when they lost the race, he was posing at the camera. Like, yeah, it's going to be... Like happy. He's like, what are you smiling about?
00:38:43
Speaker
Yeah, and I like that because it shows it kind of shows a bit of immaturity, yeah which which is expected at a kid that age. That's why they brought in Sonny Hayes to kind of like help level it off and to teach That's noise.
00:38:55
Speaker
That's just noise, and I love that. and That's what I'm saying. like To me, that was the conflict. The conflict should have been that. It shouldn't have been a love story. it shouldn't have No. that doesn't That doesn't serve the purpose of the story. If you add that, that's just adding a layer that's not needed.
00:39:10
Speaker
That's a layer that, honestly... I'll bet you 100% they would have added that layer to the story. The movie wouldn't have been, it would have been good, but it wouldn't have been as good. And what people would have said, oh, if I was a director, I would have taken that out because I don't really need it.
00:39:22
Speaker
Well, he did that. He took that out. He saw this movie. He's like, I don't like it. it it It's an extra layer that doesn't serve a purpose to the story. Yeah, exactly. So to me, the focal point of this story is these two drivers, more importantly, this team coming together to win a race. Yeah.
00:39:41
Speaker
To win a race. and And again, I love that it wasn't like, to like oh, ah we're going to, it's about winning the season and and winning the total championship. No, it's like they just need to win one race. We just want to win one, which I love. I love stories like that. Let me tell you something.
00:39:55
Speaker
The best sports movies are those movies. It's about it's about a team winning a single game. That signifies something. Doesn't have to mean that they win a championship. They just got to win a single thing.
00:40:07
Speaker
Because it's also like the stakes are higher when it's just the yeah one thing. Because if you've got like, oh, we need to win the whole thing, then it becomes like, oh, but you have time. But it's the fact that they don't have time.
00:40:17
Speaker
The time constraint makes it so the main thing at stake here. It's like, if we don't win a race, we're done. We need to win race at end of the season. And even the little thing at the end that happened that kind of came out of nowhere was... Because you're trying to say, well, who's the villain? The villain technically ended up being that guy who... Yeah, it was that was... Like, honestly, that was one thing in the movie. I didn't i didn't need that.
00:40:40
Speaker
and We didn't need it, no. I didn't need that. I was kind of like, eh. Like, you know, cause because, again, the villain of the movie technically was... the f1 season itself it was the time that was the time the villain of the movie we need to win we need to win the we need to win one race that's the villain yeah but they kind of they and i understand you need a face so they gave that and they also did it to kind of like serve to to kind of pressure sunny into like coming in into doing this but you know the thing with sunny is sunny's not that type of guy he's not gonna he's not gonna backstab
00:41:14
Speaker
No. I knew the moment that happened. I'm like, oh, he's definitely going to give him the finger at some point. I looked at the text message. Yeah. He's not going to do that. He's not going to do that. No. and so again I again,
00:41:25
Speaker
that if If I have one gripe in the movie, it's it's probably that. But in all honesty, it wasn't even that big. It really it literally wasn't that big of a gripe in the movie. Because it took nothing away from me.
00:41:36
Speaker
Because i'm already at that moment, I was so already like um just involved and I knew what the stakes were that it did it wasn't enough for me. so I guess maybe the whole point of that was to pressure Sonny into coming back.
00:41:49
Speaker
Maybe that's what it was. Because at that moment, Sonny was leaving. He was about to just... Go off to the sunset. but and nice yeah But technically, it was something that it it made him have to come back because he knew, shit, you know this team is done. It's over with if I'm not there and show my presence.
00:42:05
Speaker
So yeah, again, man, this movie, I loved everything about it. This is a movie that as soon as it comes out, available on hard copy fucking 4K Blu-ray, I am buying it.
00:42:19
Speaker
I loved it. I loved it. This is a movie that I'm going to watch it over and over again. Well, it's another Top Gun Maverick. It just gives that vibe that it's so rewatchable. It's a fun and popcorn flick, like you said.
00:42:32
Speaker
The stakes, the way it's shot, everything about it is just... The acting, everything is just so, so wonderful experience. Just a tremendous... And ah you know what? I also... And you you made light of it, too.
00:42:46
Speaker
I loved the team aspect. I love that they showed everybody in the team. Like they showed the lab, yeah the people in the lab. When you remember in the simulator, they had that one girl that she was working on stuff.
00:42:57
Speaker
And then they had a very important character in the movie played by Kate Condon. Carrie Condon played Kate was the kind of the love interest for, for Brad Pitt, where she was, she was a technical director. And she kind of said, you know, it's hard for me as a woman in this field to make it to this level.
00:43:13
Speaker
And it's true. If you think about you look at, you look at, you look at sports, especially sports in general, but F1 in particular, it's very male dominated. So whenever you see a woman in there, that's, that's a, that's a big, big deal, you know?
00:43:28
Speaker
And, and, you know, to see her and what her role means to the team. Like all of that stuff, man, all of that thing, it's it's it this movie did a bang up job showing us all the levels of what it is to be a team.
00:43:42
Speaker
And we saw it throughout the movie, we saw it building up, you know, the team coming together, they all running together. And then at the end, Joshua Pierce was the one leading them and he's the one that's, man. Yeah, I love that shot with Brad Pitt walking.
00:43:59
Speaker
um If I can see this movie again, I'm going back Yeah. No, it was really good. i Like guess I said, really want to watch it again. And I definitely want to go watch it in ah in a bigger screen. Yeah, but it. honestly can't. I was asking Rudy this before, and I was like, don't know where there's an IMAX theater here.
00:44:13
Speaker
You're going have to. um Is there a way you can search? Yeah, I can search it. Obviously, you can Google search anything these days. But it's just like, think there's anything near. And that's like, though I have travel if I want to go see an IMAX film, I think. So.
00:44:26
Speaker
It's just unfortunate. They're just not a very popular here.

Final Thoughts and Podcast Preview

00:44:30
Speaker
Because like I said, like i i I was already in it. but like Yeah, I know. I know. My screen was really small. That sucks. That sucks.
00:44:37
Speaker
That sucks. Oh, well, it is what it is. i so I'm so glad I got to watch it. And I didn't even great. That's the biggest win of all right there. Yeah, exactly. I didn't have to pay because IMAX ain't going to be cheap.
00:44:51
Speaker
No, it's not cheap these days. But yeah, no, I just, yeah, I really, you know, I do really like it. And what one thing that I, last thing I want to mention about this movie, and has really nothing to do with anything really it's a little bit but there were a lot of actors in here small parts that were actors that i saw in other movies growing up that like i don't like i right away i was like you're a lot older but you were in this movie and there's two actors you i don't know you probably won't know it like you probably have to think about it and i'm pretty sure it's these actors but you know the reporter that was like
00:45:28
Speaker
being annoying and asking all the questions and then then and he gives him the money and he's like, oh, oh my God. Right. Remember that guy? yeah Yeah. So I'm pretty sure that that actor plays the butler in the very, very popular Lindsay Lohan movie, The Parent Trap.
00:45:45
Speaker
I am like, as soon as I saw his face, I'm like, that is him. It is him. Yes, I was right. It's him. No, no, because I'm remembering, and that's him. That's yeah's the actor. I was like, that is, I'm pretty sure that's the guy from The Parent Trap. turned around and I was like, have you seen The Parent Trap? And she's like, I'm like, that guy, that he's the butler.
00:46:01
Speaker
his He's, he's, he's, and he's butler from The Parent Trap. And she's like, oh, haven't seen him in too long. I don't remember. i'm like, I'm, he's just, old he's obviously much older, but that's definitely him. Yeah. then, this is the second one, and I'm,
00:46:14
Speaker
I could be wrong. I could be very wrong. But the last... Okay, so when he sees the... the When he goes to the Baja, and then have the three... guess I'm not sure if they're all Mexican, but they're plain Mexicans.
00:46:26
Speaker
The one guy that has the big cowboy hat on, and he's saying he's a bit older. Yeah, the older gentleman. Yeah, yeah the older gentleman. I'm pretty sure he's in the movie Selena. The movie Jennifer Lopez.
00:46:38
Speaker
And I'm pretty sure... i i might be wrong, but he looks like The character, and I've seen Selena so many times, that's why I'm like, hmm, you're just a lot, lot older. He's the guy in in like, kind of like when she's already, she just, like, transitioned into, like, the bustier thing.
00:46:57
Speaker
And the and um Abraham goes to the guy to get paid. And the act, that guy who pays him is just like, oh, well, know what to tell you. She's just the woman. He's that guy.
00:47:08
Speaker
I'm like, I don't know why, but like, I want to look up this cast list. It might be. It might be. Yeah, see, I have an eye. If I'm right, I've got an eye because I've seen Selena so many times that these faces are burned in my mind. And I'm like, it might be.
00:47:24
Speaker
You are a lot older, but you look like the guy from Selena. going look up. I'm going to look But anyway, sorry. those were That's my last thing because I was just like noticing all these characters and movies that I remember going up watching. That is a good find. right i'm I'm almost 100% sure that's him. I was remember remembering him and I was like, I think that's him.
00:47:45
Speaker
Much older, like you said. yeah so It's great to see him still working. That's pretty cool. but and And that character was kind of a dick, but he ended up kind of being like, you know like he didn't get his comeuppance, he ended up getting validation at the end. Validation in the end, yeah. It's good.
00:47:59
Speaker
