Then, having navigated the northern section of the layer and backtracking, they find themselves over a great big pool of lava.

You entered through the one to the left and then to the north where there was a small encampment, a larger encampment, sorry, of these trouble lights. So the ones to the south, all of them disappear. There are still, though, one or two leaning over the ledge to the east, over the lake of lava, looking. And again, they kind of more slowly sculpt back into the darkness behind them out of view.
