Last Podcast of 2023 & Personal Updates
00:00:45
Speaker
It is our last podcast of 2023.
00:00:47
Speaker
How are you this week, Lee?
00:00:51
Speaker
Maxie, I am great.
00:00:54
Speaker
It's what, what are we on there?
00:01:00
Speaker
It's a, well, what a year.
00:01:02
Speaker
Deep breath after a busy old few days.
00:01:08
Speaker
Well, you probably noticed that I'm not at home today.
00:01:10
Speaker
I'm, I'm, I'm lifeguarding at Bronte.
00:01:12
Speaker
I'm on my lunch break.
00:01:13
Speaker
So I'm up in the Bronte Surf Club, Clubhouse.
00:01:18
Speaker
So you're going to be able to give us the news straight from the beach.
00:01:25
Speaker
Yeah, it's a pretty busy day down here today.
00:01:30
Speaker
Stinking hot here in Queensland.
00:01:33
Speaker
Got a bit of the beach at home myself.
00:01:34
Speaker
I just came in from the pool.
00:01:36
Speaker
So, right, let's get into
Self-Compassion During Holidays
00:01:38
Speaker
We've got to wrap up the year.
00:01:40
Speaker
Yeah, pretty big episode wrapping up the year and talking about things that have happened the last couple of weeks.
00:01:46
Speaker
We've had Christmas, Boxing Day, and all sorts of different things in between.
00:01:50
Speaker
We'll get into it.
00:01:51
Speaker
The quote for this week is, if your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete.
00:02:02
Speaker
And, you know, it's a busy old time and, you know, we're always told to do stuff.
00:02:07
Speaker
Christmas, you do for others and all the rest of it.
00:02:11
Speaker
But you can't burn yourself out in the process.
00:02:13
Speaker
So that's why we put that in.
00:02:16
Speaker
And actually, when we posted that, there was a couple of people shared it.
00:02:19
Speaker
And one put, this is true.
00:02:22
Speaker
So that was kind of for all the people out there trying to fit things together and all the places at once, not let anyone down.
Year Reflection & New Beginnings
00:02:32
Speaker
I think it's a great quote to wrap up the end of the year and what a year that it was and I'm sure throughout this episode we'll capture and talk about the high points of the year and yeah, it's very exciting.
00:02:46
Speaker
Yes, it's been a busy old year and yeah, so what do we, we must have some good news, Max.
00:02:53
Speaker
There's some great news.
In-Flight Medical Emergency
00:03:03
Speaker
Yeah, there's some great news, Lee.
00:03:06
Speaker
So Merry Christmas to you and everyone else.
00:03:08
Speaker
We're coming into a couple more days before the new year.
00:03:11
Speaker
So first and foremost, that's good news.
00:03:19
Speaker
We're still talking, honestly.
00:03:23
Speaker
It is holiday season.
00:03:25
Speaker
You know, you're at the work today.
00:03:26
Speaker
I'm at work today.
00:03:28
Speaker
You know, some people work all the way through.
00:03:30
Speaker
We are having a little bit of a break, you know, with the schools and stuff.
00:03:34
Speaker
But behind the scenes, we're still all systems go.
00:03:37
Speaker
But, yeah, everyone seems to be having a good time in Sydney that I've seen, enjoying their holidays, you know, staying safe.
00:03:44
Speaker
There has been some cracking storms.
00:03:47
Speaker
Down in Sydney and up in Queensland, you can talk about that.
00:03:50
Speaker
Some cracking storms that have devastated a few suburbs.
00:03:54
Speaker
There is, and there is still a lot of, like, literally, you know, storms came through.
00:03:58
Speaker
We'll probably talk about this in the unfortunate event because storms came through at 5.30 on Christmas Day in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
00:04:06
Speaker
It's not ideal timing.
00:04:07
Speaker
Seriously, not ideal.
00:04:09
Speaker
And there's still, I just saw, here we are now on the beginning, you know, it's almost lunch on the 28th and there's still over 30,000 people with no power.
00:04:20
Speaker
So there'll be all that food, all the leftovers, you know, it's a time of year for the leftovers.
00:04:26
Speaker
Well, they didn't even probably get the first one, Powerway, and the 5.30 on Christmas Day.
00:04:30
Speaker
Never mind about the leftovers.
00:04:33
Speaker
So, yeah, we'll talk about all of that.
00:04:35
Speaker
But I've got a great good news story, Maxie.
Charity Stories & Impact
00:04:39
Speaker
for us this week, Lee?
00:04:39
Speaker
So, basically, a lady was flying from Manchester to Florida,
00:04:47
Speaker
and had a heart attack during the flight.
00:04:52
Speaker
You can just imagine that, you know, the flight attendant comes on board, you know, the, is there a doctor on board kind of thing.
00:05:00
Speaker
Fifteen cardiologists, yes, fifteen cardiologists put their hands up.
00:05:08
Speaker
They were all on the way to a conference.
00:05:12
Speaker
There were 15 cardiologists on this flight.
00:05:15
Speaker
That's a very lucky flight.
00:05:18
Speaker
And basically they
00:05:20
Speaker
Like, seriously, this lady got the best care she could ever have.
00:05:23
Speaker
She was all fixed up.
00:05:25
Speaker
And by the time they got the flight to land, they'd got everything sorted out for her.
00:05:30
Speaker
And so, you know, what a chance of luck of, is there a doctor on board?
00:05:35
Speaker
We got 15 cardiologists on the way to a conference.
00:05:39
Speaker
I was like, that is just like, you know, off to a cardiology conference.
00:05:45
Speaker
That's a very lucky flight.
00:05:47
Speaker
You want to be on that flight.
00:05:48
Speaker
going by a lotto ticket because like that is it she it was like her day so i thought um that was a good story for us so um they i think they rerouted the flight to north carolina she read retreatment in intensive care and the cardiologist got the drips in it was all going off so there you go that's off to the crew so excellent so mm-hmm so yeah so um
00:06:14
Speaker
I've got some random act of kindness stories here, Lee.
00:06:19
Speaker
So, you know, through the charity, we give and donate books across the world to people that want to learn and be educated about water safety and so on.
00:06:28
Speaker
And I did get a message the other day from little young Evie, who we've spoken to or about before, who's a little bit unwell at the moment.
00:06:39
Speaker
And she's not doing the best, but she's
00:06:43
Speaker
I was told that Maxie's Beach Rescue is lifting her spirits and there was a photo sent from her on Christmas Day, reading the book with a smile on her face.
00:06:55
Speaker
Just a little bit of a shout-out to her and hopefully she feels a little bit better through her treatment and we're thinking of her.
00:07:03
Speaker
Hopefully it's a better 2024.
00:07:07
Speaker
And another quick story, little Cooper that come visit me at Bondi the other week, you know, 10 years apart, he had his birthday on Boxing Day and he sent me a nice video with his new books.
00:07:23
Speaker
So, you know, it's good to see the charity and the random act of kindness in full flight, helping out people all across the world.
00:07:32
Speaker
Yeah, love it, love it.
00:07:33
Speaker
That's a great story.
00:07:34
Speaker
And so he was the little guy that was the 10 years apart on the buggy.
00:07:39
Speaker
Love it, love it, love it.
00:07:41
Speaker
Great story, great story.
00:07:43
Speaker
So, yeah, you know, you've got Bronte right behind you.
00:07:48
Speaker
Can we have the latest news from Bronte,
Water Safety & Drowning Awareness
00:07:59
Speaker
Yes, job of the week.
00:08:00
Speaker
So it's been quite busy on the beaches the last couple of weeks through summer.
00:08:05
Speaker
We've had some cracking storms come through.
00:08:07
Speaker
We have to clear the beaches when those big lightning strikes come down.
00:08:11
Speaker
But I'm working at Bronte today.
00:08:13
Speaker
There's probably already, it's midday, there's probably at least 5,000 people on the beach.
00:08:18
Speaker
It's quite a small beach, Bronte.
00:08:21
Speaker
Probably holds about maybe 8,000 people on a real busy, busy day.
00:08:25
Speaker
But yeah, the forest has been busy as well.
00:08:27
Speaker
We had a steady couple of shifts, but unfortunately dealt with a couple of cardiac arrests and stuff, especially this time of year around families and that.
00:08:36
Speaker
Such a sad, tragic time to lose a loved one.
00:08:38
Speaker
So a shout out to people that have lost people around this time of year in the past and people that have been injured or impacted.
00:08:46
Speaker
And, you know, talking about the storms and that up in Queensland, horrible situations.
00:08:50
Speaker
And there's been a number of drownings, uh,
00:08:54
Speaker
you know, in the last 24 to 48 hours.
00:08:58
Speaker
And, you know, I was actually kind of,
00:09:01
Speaker
I was kind of getting ahead of myself.
00:09:03
Speaker
Early December, I was thinking there hasn't been that many drownings around Australia compared to last year.
00:09:09
Speaker
Last year was terrible.
00:09:11
Speaker
There was drownings every day.
00:09:13
Speaker
But in the last, since probably Christmas Eve, I've noticed, there's been one, two, three drownings a day all across Australia.
00:09:21
Speaker
And, you know, people just need to just...
00:09:24
Speaker
know how to swim, swim in safe places, swim between the flags, know what to do in an emergency and be careful boating, drinking, all these sorts of things that factor into accidents.
00:09:36
Speaker
You need to really be on the ball.
00:09:39
Speaker
Yeah, and I think I was just, and I think when we talk about charity cornering a bit, I've got some more stats on this because I've just been doing some research, but I think it's something like 25% of drownings happening this week between Christmas and New Year.
00:09:55
Speaker
It's supposed to be such a joyous time a year too.
00:09:57
Speaker
Absolutely, and it's been a terrible few days.
00:10:01
Speaker
But you know what?
00:10:02
Speaker
That's why we do what we do all year round, and I noticed the media getting on
00:10:07
Speaker
on board with it today and it's like, you know, hey guys, come and talk to us in June, we'll be here.
00:10:12
Speaker
Yeah, exactly right.
00:10:14
Speaker
So I think when we get to Charity Corner, I'm going to give some of the statistics.
00:10:18
Speaker
We'll talk about February in MSE and we'll talk about why we're doing it.
00:10:22
Speaker
Just quickly, it is unfortunate that, you know, a lot of the news and media cycles are very reactive to it happening past tense.
00:10:33
Speaker
There's no prevention or getting set up for it.
00:10:37
Speaker
So hopefully we can change that.
00:10:39
Speaker
And knowing what we've been planning and working on.
00:10:46
Speaker
So, yeah, so, right.
00:10:48
Speaker
Unfortunate event.
Challenging Christmas Experiences
00:10:53
Speaker
What have you got for us, Leigh?
00:10:54
Speaker
Christmas Day, Max.
00:10:59
Speaker
Christmas Day, give it to us.
00:11:02
Speaker
Look, I was entertaining.
00:11:03
Speaker
I was the hostess with the leastest.
00:11:05
Speaker
It's the one day a year that the kitchen, it's like I brace myself, I go for it.
00:11:11
Speaker
Look, I had a couple of, you know, I didn't mind me if you should put a mix early enough, but I've got a recovery then.
00:11:17
Speaker
nailed it they were fine then i had like you know my cheese sauce i made my cheese sauce i had it on the wrong setting because i didn't read the instructions properly i was just like but i really i was i was ahead of time so i was able to recover these things and look we got it all there um but we've had
00:11:37
Speaker
Not on Christmas Day.
00:11:38
Speaker
We had power outages on Christmas Eve and then we had power outages on Boxing Day.
00:11:43
Speaker
So it's been, you know, candles at the ready.
00:11:46
Speaker
And then I went to find me a torch because I was going to read me book and all, you know, the inside of your torch when all the batteries corrode.
00:11:55
Speaker
Been a bit of that.
00:11:56
Speaker
So I'm going to pull me this tomorrow.
00:11:57
Speaker
I get some new torches.
00:11:59
Speaker
Get some torches, yeah, you need to be prepared for those power outages.
00:12:02
Speaker
They're not ideal.
00:12:04
Speaker
Three severe storm days, and guess what?
00:12:06
Speaker
They forecast three more starting tomorrow, right through New Year.
00:12:11
Speaker
We don't need that in Queensland.
00:12:12
Speaker
We got, like, you know, a bit of stuff going on.
00:12:14
Speaker
Anyway, you were hosting.
00:12:16
Speaker
How did your dinner go?
00:12:18
Speaker
Everything went well for Christmas Day.
00:12:20
Speaker
It was really good.
00:12:23
Speaker
But my unfortunate event was like you spend all morning cooking, cooking, cooking and preparing.
00:12:30
Speaker
And I always find when I finally sat down to enjoy the dinner or the lunch, I wasn't hungry.
00:12:42
Speaker
Yeah, I still ate.
00:12:43
Speaker
But I wasn't as hungry because I have a theory.
00:12:47
Speaker
If you cook and you're slaving away and you're smelling and you're tasting and you're making sure everything's kind of
00:12:53
Speaker
kind of coming along nicely, sometimes greys, when it comes to actually sitting down and eating it, you're already a little bit full or you're not really hungry.
00:13:02
Speaker
No, I'm not sure of the puddings and stuff and all the rest of it because, like, you know, we had a lot of that, a lot of food.
00:13:11
Speaker
We had a lot of food too.
00:13:12
Speaker
So we're still eating, you know, three or four days later, we're still eating leftovers.
00:13:16
Speaker
So I feel sorry for the people that didn't get a chance to cook on Christmas up in Queensland or, you know, have the power outages with the food and that's terrible to hear.
00:13:28
Speaker
And you know, and there's still people, like I say, it was actually, the weather people have actually declared it was a tornado that came through in the middle of the Gold Coast.
00:13:38
Speaker
It started in Cedar Vale, and I've got a friend who lives in an area, Coomera area, and her street is
00:13:46
Speaker
like huge 50-year-old gum trees just picked up.
00:13:50
Speaker
Just picked up and snapped, yeah.
00:13:51
Speaker
And the jet said the damage was unprecedented.
00:13:54
Speaker
And I had messages from England that made the news over there.
00:13:56
Speaker
So thinking of everyone on the Gold Coast, and please just...
00:14:01
Speaker
Mother Nature, spare those that got smashed the other night, spare them over the next few days because the heat is extraordinary.
00:14:11
Speaker
That was a fierce storm.
00:14:13
Speaker
I have never seen a storm like that.
00:14:14
Speaker
So, you know, wish us luck.
00:14:19
Speaker
Wish us luck, yeah.
00:14:20
Speaker
Like seeing your luck your way.
00:14:24
Speaker
Dad, you got some this week?
00:14:26
Speaker
Oh, Dad, actually, I've got a couple that's still got, I thought, look, they've still got a bit of the Christmas feel.
00:14:33
Speaker
If you can't do them this week, when can I?
Holiday Humor
00:14:37
Speaker
So, Maxie, what do you get when you cross a snowman with a vampire?
00:14:53
Speaker
That's a good one.
00:14:53
Speaker
That's a good one.
00:14:57
Speaker
What do you call a lazy kangaroo?
00:15:01
Speaker
So what do you call a lazy kangaroo?
00:15:09
Speaker
Oh, man, this segment.
00:15:10
Speaker
I'll tell you, this segment is definitely getting the last.
00:15:13
Speaker
The last Christmas one, okay?
00:15:16
Speaker
Why did the elf go to the podiatrist?
00:15:20
Speaker
Why did he go to the podiatrist?
00:15:22
Speaker
Because he had mistletoe.
00:15:25
Speaker
The athlete's foot.
00:15:28
Speaker
The athlete's foot.
00:15:33
Speaker
If you think swimming with dolphins is expensive, you should try swimming with sharks.
00:15:39
Speaker
Cost me an arm and a leg.
00:15:46
Speaker
Yeah, it's not ideal that.
00:15:48
Speaker
Yeah, make sure you don't swim with sharks.
00:15:50
Speaker
It could be dangerous.
00:15:51
Speaker
Yes, exactly, exactly.
00:15:53
Speaker
No, one of them hasn't happened.
00:15:55
Speaker
Don't even mention it.
00:15:56
Speaker
Like, we're not talking it.
00:15:57
Speaker
Don't even mention it.
Water Rescue Safety Tips
00:16:09
Speaker
Yes, tip of the week this week is rescue tubes.
00:16:12
Speaker
So it's a video of me showing you how to rescue someone with a rescue tube.
00:16:16
Speaker
You do see them around pools, piers, jetties, sometimes dams, lakes, rivers.
00:16:24
Speaker
If you are confident and you know how to swim, you'd be able to assist someone with a rescue device, with a rescue tube.
00:16:31
Speaker
However, if you don't have a rescue tube or you don't know how to swim, do not put yourself in harm's way.
00:16:36
Speaker
All too often we hear that rescuers do drown as well.
00:16:39
Speaker
So this video is a couple of tips about how to use a rescue tube to rescue you, to rescue someone that you come across.
00:16:48
Speaker
Always remember, use a flotation device if you're doing a rescue.
00:16:54
Speaker
And it's a great little video.
00:16:55
Speaker
And I love now that we're taking the rescue tubes out to school.
00:16:58
Speaker
Yeah, it's great fun.
00:17:00
Speaker
And the kid's loving it too.
00:17:01
Speaker
So it gives them a couple of little tips and tricks of how to rescue someone if they come across someone.
00:17:06
Speaker
And rescue tube in the water and using the throw bag and the throw line out of the water.
00:17:11
Speaker
It's very important to know different ways to do it.
00:17:14
Speaker
Excellent, excellent.
00:17:15
Speaker
Right, what have we got next then, Maxi?
Music Recommendation: Ocean Alley
00:17:18
Speaker
So we've got the song for the playlist this week and it's been listening a lot of Ocean Alley lately.
00:17:24
Speaker
It's a bit of a kind of like Bob Marley kind of semi kind of Bob Marley vibes, you know, Jamaican vibes.
00:17:32
Speaker
And so they're a busy band.
00:17:34
Speaker
Yeah, a bit of reggae.
00:17:35
Speaker
That's the old genre I was looking for.
00:17:38
Speaker
This one's called Knees, and yeah, it's quite a catchy song.
00:17:41
Speaker
And when I was driving to Brighton this morning, it was playing over the radio, and the sun was coming up.
00:17:49
Speaker
It was beautiful, and I just think it's a bit of a fitting song.
00:18:05
Speaker
Daydreamer Walking through the clouds It's a streamer Floating from the sky It starts to stream It's time to grow up They're leaders
00:18:26
Speaker
Yeah, so it's a very chilled song, good like ocean vibes.
00:18:31
Speaker
So I'm going to look up Ocean Alley.
00:18:34
Speaker
Ocean Alley, yeah.
00:18:35
Speaker
Just put it on the Spotify radio and it goes down a treat.
00:18:39
Speaker
So, yeah, happy days.
00:18:41
Speaker
Excellent, excellent.
00:18:53
Speaker
What have you got this week, Lee?
00:18:55
Speaker
Well, Maxie, this is where I wanted to introduce the facts about Duranas, putting my serious hat on.
00:19:02
Speaker
So if you've got another fact, do you want to go first and we'll lead my random facts into the charity?
00:19:09
Speaker
Yeah, perfect, perfect.
New Year's Traditions Worldwide
00:19:11
Speaker
So we are coming to the back end of the year, so I thought I'd say a couple of facts about New Year's.
00:19:17
Speaker
So the celebration of New Year's dates back over 4,000 years to ancient Babylon.
00:19:28
Speaker
The tradition of making New Year's resolutions can be traced back to ancient Rome.
00:19:36
Speaker
The New Year is celebrated at different times around the world due to different calendars.
00:19:39
Speaker
For example, Chinese New Year usually falls between January 21st and February 20th.
00:19:46
Speaker
The Times Square New Year's Eve ball drop in New York has been a tradition since 1907.
00:19:54
Speaker
Yeah, that's a pretty cool fact.
00:19:58
Speaker
And last but not least, here we go.
00:20:08
Speaker
I actually did, I actually did by five.
00:20:11
Speaker
So yeah, happy day.
00:20:11
Speaker
So what have you got, Lee?
00:20:13
Speaker
I've since looking at a bit of the drownings because it's been all over the news.
00:20:19
Speaker
And like I said, it annoys you and I that we only, you know, the news get older this at this time of year, which, you know, as you and I know, we're out there 52 weeks of the year.
00:20:32
Speaker
because no one packs the water away with the Christmas tree.
00:20:36
Speaker
It kind of stays there all year.
00:20:38
Speaker
So basically 25% of drownings happen between Christmas and New Year in Australia.
Drowning Statistics Discussion
00:20:46
Speaker
A combination of recreation, people doing silly things, drinking, maybe the gods down, all those different things.
00:20:56
Speaker
There's been 21 drownings since the 1st of December in Australia and this was up to yesterday, the 27th.
00:21:03
Speaker
So there's been 10 in the last 48 hours.
00:21:10
Speaker
There's been six in New South Wales.
00:21:12
Speaker
There's been six in Queensland.
00:21:15
Speaker
And just some of the things that we talk about all year.
00:21:19
Speaker
And this is why I wanted the scenarios.
00:21:25
Speaker
So, you know, you always say about rescuers drown too.
00:21:30
Speaker
You know, rescuers going in and then the rescuer is the rescuer that drowns.
00:21:35
Speaker
Drownings in rips.
00:21:36
Speaker
People not swimming at patrol beaches.
00:21:38
Speaker
Just swim at patrol beach.
00:21:40
Speaker
Swim between the flags.
00:21:43
Speaker
tragic down at the beach in Penrith, the dad that managed to save his three kids on the stand up paddleboard and virtually sacrificed himself.
00:21:54
Speaker
The three kids could not swim.
00:22:00
Speaker
Learn to swim in Queensland.
00:22:04
Speaker
Three guys got caught, grown guys, two of them teachers.
00:22:08
Speaker
One of them, my friend's kid's English teacher.
00:22:12
Speaker
They're boat cat sized.
00:22:14
Speaker
Granted in a storm, but you know what?
00:22:17
Speaker
Our weather warnings were out hours and hours, but for whatever reason,
00:22:22
Speaker
They didn't make it back.
00:22:23
Speaker
These are not, you know, for whatever reason, slow boat going against the tide, all of the things that just went against them in that moment.
00:22:32
Speaker
You know, 11 people on my boat, eight got rescued, three tragically passed away.
00:22:38
Speaker
And storm water drains.
00:22:40
Speaker
two different locations, one in the Mary River in Gympie and then a young girl that climbed over a fence, got into a stormwater drain, so that's three in stormwater drains.
00:22:54
Speaker
these drownings aren't all happening at the beach.
00:22:57
Speaker
They're all of these different scenarios that we talk about and do little videos of all year round.
00:23:04
Speaker
And you know what, we do it for a reason and that's why we're gonna have our event in February.
00:23:11
Speaker
so that we can be going out to these regional places in April, in May, in June, and we don't just talk about it on the news between Christmas and New Year when we're giving bad news, because surely prevention and education is way better than having to report on what they're reporting on in the news at the moment.
00:23:35
Speaker
It's a terrible time for some people and some families.
00:23:39
Speaker
So just make sure you take care and look after each other.
00:23:42
Speaker
It's supposed to be such a joyous, happy holiday time of year.
00:23:46
Speaker
And not just here in Australia in summer.
00:23:48
Speaker
Over in England and in Northern Hemisphere, you have cold weather and people go swimming in rivers, lakes, dams that are frozen over and so on.
00:23:57
Speaker
So it's not just the heat with the drownings.
00:24:00
Speaker
You can also have drownings in cold water as well.
00:24:03
Speaker
Just be mindful, be careful.
00:24:05
Speaker
And, you know, moving into 2024, we've got some really cool, exciting things that we're working on that we're going to be launching in February moving forward.
00:24:12
Speaker
So hopefully a few people will jump on the bandwagon and teach a few skills to save you and someone else's life.
Charity Updates & Future Plans
00:24:25
Speaker
Charity Corner then.
00:24:34
Speaker
Okay, Leigh, what have you got for Charity Corner?
00:24:37
Speaker
Oh, so we've sent the first emails out for February.
00:24:42
Speaker
And it's dawned on me.
00:24:43
Speaker
I'm going to put a poster because it's two months tomorrow, which makes me feel... Two months tomorrow.
00:24:48
Speaker
It's coming up quick.
00:24:49
Speaker
I've really got to get my act together in learning this speech now.
00:24:54
Speaker
So, websites up, events live, tickets are on sale, first emails have gone out.
00:25:03
Speaker
It's very exciting.
00:25:05
Speaker
So that's why, whilst it's, you know, sort of a bit quiet on the top, there's a few things squirrelling around underneath that we can be organised for January and February.
00:25:14
Speaker
So, yes, it's going to be a big time coming up.
00:25:20
Speaker
And, you know, it's going to be a big year next year, but, you know, it's important.
00:25:24
Speaker
We always tell people, you know, this week it's been, you know, family and friends and having a bit of a breather.
00:25:31
Speaker
I've been working.
00:25:31
Speaker
This is a busy time for lifeguarding and firefighting, so I've just been head down, as they say, bum up.
00:25:37
Speaker
But I've just been, yeah, just chipping away with that.
00:25:41
Speaker
But it's very important to...
00:25:42
Speaker
You know, start fresh into the new year.
00:25:44
Speaker
That just goes for not just Live, Learn, Survive, but everyone else.
00:25:47
Speaker
You know, write down your news resolutions, read some books, listen to audio books, listen to music, get moving, training.
00:25:54
Speaker
And speaking about training, you're back in the pool, Lee, which is good to see, good to hear.
00:26:00
Speaker
Yeah, it's just important.
00:26:02
Speaker
Yeah, it's good stuff.
00:26:04
Speaker
You need to keep moving.
00:26:08
Speaker
Sorry, you training?
00:26:10
Speaker
Yeah, just training most days.
00:26:13
Speaker
Just trying to keep, like I said, I always tell people you just got to keep moving.
00:26:16
Speaker
If you do one thing a day, it keeps the doctor away.
00:26:19
Speaker
Yeah, so I'm going to, through this break, I'm going to have like, now that, you know, there's a massive effort getting the website live.
00:26:27
Speaker
So now I want to swim every second day until we get back fully into the office kind of thing.
00:26:33
Speaker
I'm doing four hours.
00:26:34
Speaker
So, yeah, it was good to get back in the pool.
00:26:36
Speaker
I could tell I hadn't done one for a while.
00:26:39
Speaker
But you know what?
00:26:42
Speaker
You do get back into it really quickly.
00:26:47
Speaker
You just, you know...
00:26:48
Speaker
Especially if you enjoy it.
00:26:49
Speaker
Especially if you enjoy it.
00:26:50
Speaker
You need to enjoy some extent of training and exercising because if you hate it and you don't want to do it, then the habit, it won't be a good habit.
00:27:00
Speaker
You'll become a job or a chore and you'll look for any excuse under the sun to not do it.
00:27:07
Speaker
So, yeah, good to be back in the pool.
00:27:10
Speaker
That makes me very happy.
00:27:12
Speaker
So, right, what next, Maxie?
00:27:15
Speaker
We've got reflection.
Reflecting on Accomplishments
00:27:24
Speaker
Yeah, you know it on the head before, Lee.
00:27:26
Speaker
I think it's just important to reflect on the year that was.
00:27:29
Speaker
You know, we've done some amazing things, especially in the last three or four months.
00:27:32
Speaker
You know, the way that we plan things, the way that we do our meetings now, our videos are getting...
00:27:42
Speaker
You know, we had Ben help us out a couple of weeks ago with the new river and CPR video, which I'll be, I've been editing.
00:27:49
Speaker
The CPR video is pretty much 90% done.
00:27:53
Speaker
I've done the subtitles and I'm just doing one last final edit, but they'll be ready for education purposes next year, which is exciting to launch.
00:28:02
Speaker
And then I just got to get into the river safety one, which is very important as well.
00:28:07
Speaker
So I've done a bit of a run through here, Maxi, by month.
00:28:10
Speaker
So let me just take you down memory lane.
00:28:15
Speaker
Let's go back to the beginning of the year.
00:28:19
Speaker
we said, we're gonna do it.
00:28:20
Speaker
We launched the 42 challenge.
00:28:23
Speaker
So that was the 42 for 42 challenge.
00:28:27
Speaker
And then in February, remember we, first time remember by February, we had a brand new charity and a bank account with $0 in it.
00:28:35
Speaker
Remember we went down to Sovereign Islands and we were guests at the lunch with the people down there.
00:28:40
Speaker
And we were donated just $3,300 and something dollars
00:28:49
Speaker
that put us in the black, not the red, in the black, in the bank account.
00:28:56
Speaker
So March, we're back on the Gold Coast again, and we showcased our Help Yourself Help Others logo on the Tayshers.
00:29:07
Speaker
And we declared then that you were going to run two marathons, and that's when I said it out loud, I'm going to swim 42 points.
00:29:20
Speaker
April, we met the awesome people at the YMCA.
00:29:24
Speaker
We booked the venue for the event in May and we met with all the different people that came on board and actually came along in the day.
00:29:33
Speaker
So like the local SES, the volunteer coast guard, the Coochie Surf Life Saving Club, the police, the Ambos, the Fireys, all those awesome people.
00:29:43
Speaker
that joined us, so we had all of that.
00:29:46
Speaker
And then May, 42 challenge, another $15,000 in the bank.
00:29:55
Speaker
And the opportunity to donate loads and loads of books, which we still have lots to donate.
00:30:01
Speaker
They're going to be donated through this year as well.
00:30:05
Speaker
We set the goal, we went for it, and we did it.
00:30:10
Speaker
We thought we'd better review all this business plan there.
00:30:16
Speaker
So we went back to the office.
00:30:18
Speaker
We went back to the office.
00:30:20
Speaker
We got the business plan out and we decided what we were going to keep, what we were going to throw.
00:30:27
Speaker
And then in July, remember we went and did the family day for the awesome McCulloch Robertson.
00:30:33
Speaker
Yes, I remember that.
00:30:35
Speaker
You know, we went and met all the staff and the families and we, you know, we, instead of having board meetings with lawyers in their boardroom, we started throwing around throw bags and CPR.
00:30:47
Speaker
That was a really good day.
00:30:49
Speaker
It was a great day.
00:30:50
Speaker
So we had all the lawyers doing CPR.
00:30:52
Speaker
That was good fun.
00:30:54
Speaker
And then August, I finished
00:30:57
Speaker
the speech the creating little superheroes was actually almost nailed so um that was pretty uh pretty cool and then september fail to plan plan to fail we got serious about planning
00:31:16
Speaker
Because if there's one thing that we've been really, it's not our strength, is we plan a little bit, we don't plan enough for the size of the kind of things that we're going through.
00:31:33
Speaker
I just missed, actually, how could I miss in that?
00:31:36
Speaker
We welcomed Jazz to the team.
00:31:38
Speaker
Jazz, what a legend, what a star.
00:31:40
Speaker
She's been a massive, massive help.
00:31:42
Speaker
My lifesaver, literally.
00:31:44
Speaker
So, yeah, we welcomed Jazz to the team.
00:31:50
Speaker
October, we went back out to schools with the new program, with the new PowerPoint.
00:31:55
Speaker
New look, new PowerPoint.
00:31:57
Speaker
That was good fun.
00:31:58
Speaker
With all the new toys, which made it even more fun.
00:32:01
Speaker
And then November, how could we forget the photo shoot?
00:32:05
Speaker
Great photo shoot.
00:32:06
Speaker
All those photos come out really nice and it's a new look for Live, Learn, Survive moving forward into 2024.
00:32:13
Speaker
And we went up into the Hunter Valley and we got back out.
00:32:17
Speaker
Great little trip.
00:32:18
Speaker
A great little trip up there to the Hunter.
00:32:21
Speaker
And then December.
00:32:22
Speaker
Here we are now Maxie, we launched the new website and we launched Creating Little Superheroes, the badge.
00:32:31
Speaker
What a year that was.
00:32:32
Speaker
Bum, bum, bum, drum, drum, drum,
00:32:35
Speaker
What a year that was.
00:32:36
Speaker
So I'll be interested to see what 2024 brings.
00:32:40
Speaker
I think next year's year in review will be something very similar, if not more, which is exciting.
00:32:47
Speaker
Well, we said that this year was the year of establishing the charity.
00:32:52
Speaker
And that is what we've done.
00:32:53
Speaker
That's what we've done.
00:32:54
Speaker
One big green tip.
00:32:57
Speaker
So, you know, if you're setting your goals for 2024, that's one of ours we can tick off.
00:33:04
Speaker
We are definitely, definitely in the black and we've got Jazz in the team and, yeah, excited for next year.
00:33:16
Speaker
The year that was.
00:33:17
Speaker
The year that was.
00:33:19
Speaker
Okay, so rule for the rule book.
Practicing Gratitude & Positivity
00:33:30
Speaker
Yeah, just this last week is a lot of giving back and random act of kindness and helping and love and so on.
00:33:37
Speaker
But one thing that I want to say for the rule book is practice gratitude.
00:33:42
Speaker
Appreciate the small joys and successes in your life and what this year has brought.
00:33:49
Speaker
And gratitude can also shift your perspective and bring contentment, you know.
00:33:55
Speaker
it's uh yeah it's very important to to just reflect and you know for some people it's a terrible year not a good year and for some people it's been a really good growth year and exciting year so i think it's just moving forward everything you've done your whole life brings this point right now moving forward being in the now and and creating the the the new path leading into the new year and having a positive and happy outlook on life i'm sure
00:34:24
Speaker
you'll get through and be okay.
00:34:26
Speaker
It's okay to have a few bad days and a few storms, but just know that the sun always rises in the morning.
00:34:33
Speaker
And you know what?
00:34:35
Speaker
Being grateful if there's one, if you can just at the end of the day, even finish the day on...
00:34:42
Speaker
In 24 hours, there could be so many things that didn't go right, but there will have been one thing that went right.
00:34:49
Speaker
Even if it was just someone smiled at you walking past you in the street, someone said hello, your coffee was the right temperature, whatever, you know, whatever.
00:34:57
Speaker
Look at this movie.
00:34:59
Speaker
Finish the day on the positive thing and I tell you what, you'll sleep better.
00:35:03
Speaker
It is absolutely worth it because there are all little changes that you can do.
00:35:12
Speaker
And if it has been a shocker of a year, well, you know what, it's nearly over.
00:35:15
Speaker
There's a bright...
00:35:16
Speaker
a bright sparkly one right around the corner we can all have a go and we can always you know rewrite the story so yes so very grateful everyone that's helped us this year everyone that's listened everyone that sent us a message you know we are grateful for every one of you because you know we wouldn't be able to do this without the support so
00:35:42
Speaker
A big thank you to everyone as well.
00:35:44
Speaker
Yeah, really very well said, Lee.
00:35:46
Speaker
So happy New Year, everyone.
00:35:50
Speaker
We are going to have a year off, a week off next week.
00:35:55
Speaker
So there will be no podcast next week.
00:35:57
Speaker
However, we'll be back the week after with guests and normal schedule for the year.
00:36:02
Speaker
So everyone enjoy the New Year.
00:36:06
Speaker
Look after yourselves.
00:36:08
Speaker
And, yeah, all the best.
00:36:09
Speaker
Yes, and Happy New Year, Maxie.
00:36:12
Speaker
Happy New Year, Lee.
00:36:14
Speaker
I'll speak to you after this.
00:36:16
Speaker
Yeah, I'll speak to you soon.
00:36:18
Speaker
Have a great New Year, everyone.
00:36:19
Speaker
We will see you in January.
