Introduction to the Podcasts

00:00:10
Speaker
hi everyone and welcome to the daily benford podcast from the global sports podcast network i'm nydia and for this week's crossover episode i'm joined by josh from the daily west hand podcast how are we today josh Yeah, not bad. i'm I'm very much looking forward to this week. Obviously, it's a busy one for all of us clubs. We've got Carabao Cup and also Premier League as well. So it's going to be a ah busy one, I think. But yeah, I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. so Yeah, you've got a big night tonight.

Busy Schedule and Nerves

00:00:38
Speaker
I mean, we are recording this on the Wednesday, but how do you think that this will impact your game on Saturday?
00:00:46
Speaker
I've been saying this week, and I've been saying to you know fans and friends that have asked questions, obviously, see how things are going. And it's a very big worry right now what's going on, to be honest, because the last thing we want from that, we've had, there seems to be so many London Darby's. We don't actually leave the of South or London till mid-November, which I can't be, I just can't can't believe it, to be honest. But it means that every game matters. So for us right now,
00:01:12
Speaker
We don't want to be seeing 3-0 against Chelsea, which but we've just we've just faced, obviously, so it's a bit tough. I feel like every week we just all we're just in mourning after another awful loss. But um yeah, it's going to be tricky tonight because obviously we need to get as much game time as we can for all of our players.
00:01:30
Speaker
so it's It's hard enough anyway, I feel like i've been I've been reading about the new Lopategi roulette because we're just sat at the moment with every lineup changes every week, substitutes get made out of nowhere. I think some players need some core game time and I think that's why we need these tournaments.
00:01:48
Speaker
So the kaup for us it matters to get as much games as we can for the likes of the new signings so and getting as much of the players as much minutes as we can do.

Injury Issues and Performance Impacts

00:01:55
Speaker
So I'm very nervous about who we're going to be playing when and where because I'm cautious that we've been using some of the same individuals every week. So even chances of injuries and it just worries me when I see players.
00:02:06
Speaker
have a little a little fall or a little limp. it just At this point in the season, I think it's just too early that you hate to see anyone getting injured. And we've got a couple of other you guys have had a few. Yeah, it won fun I can% relate to that. It seems like how we already got this many injuries. yeah I mean, i I like to say I'm relatively clued in with Brentford, but I think the most reason why I've seen is obviously we are being injured. Yeah, that was obviously a big blow, especially after Tony leaving and stuff.
00:02:33
Speaker
Yeah, but that's one of my my big questions today was going to be about yeah how are you guys dealing with, you know, the lack of Tony up top. So it's one I'm really keen to to hear about with you guys. But we've equally had our, ah we we've had Nicholas Falkberg be injured now and thinking he's going to be back every week and every time they say, Oh, yeah, he's ready to play. And It doesn't show, it doesn't turn up to the training cause

Striker Woes and Team Performance

00:02:53
Speaker
he's too injured. And, uh, yeah, I know. I don't know why it happens. Just they'll say, Oh, yeah, he's some injury boost. He's back now. It's going to really throw a spanner in the work for this team. And yeah, it doesn't seem to happen. So I'm really hoping he is actually fit to this week because ah we need him because we have our biggest curses striker. I think everyone will say that strikers are most cursed position. You know, we've had the likes before of our.
00:03:20
Speaker
you know, previous history up top with the signings we make, I think, I think I saw the worst in the years, like how much money we spent in comparison to Citi on Strikers is, it's so weird that it's a similar amount of money. Yeah, that is crazy. As soon as you start like having comparisons with Citi, that's when you know it's like insane spending.
00:03:37
Speaker
Yeah, so I'm I'm just hoping that he's back because we've not had much fortune up top in that department. We've got the players, I think, at least on a wide wider variety. You know, we've we've had a very busy window, but it's just one I hope everyone can just suddenly do

Upcoming Brentford vs West Ham Match

00:03:51
Speaker
a good performance. I'd love to see it against Liverpool because half of my mates are Liverpool fans. So and I'd love to see a win just for that aspect anyway. Yeah, just for like sending things to your friends, basically. Yeah, that's it. Yeah, that as well. have But yeah, i mean have you got you guys got Carrotbark up this week, haven't you? you i yeah
00:04:07
Speaker
um have yeah Um, oh God, I need to remember. i off my head cut it You've got us at the weekend, so that's a good start. Um, who was it? Oh no, we, we had it last week. That was it.
00:04:21
Speaker
Oh, okay. That was it. We did win. I was thinking, wait, we don't do it this week. No, we don't. Yeah, we've it's been weird for us. We've had Liverpool now and then we had Bournemouth the last time it was round. So I'm i'm a bit kind of i'm annoyed if everyone's getting easier teams than us. yeah Yeah, you do seem to have it quite tough. Yes.
00:04:42
Speaker
We've been very moaning on our our GSP in West Ham. Honestly, we're the same just with injuries instead. Yeah, I can imagine the ah so the my latest knowledge is obviously I know you guys lost to Tottenham. So the biggest worry I have for this weekend is with the current runnings of four on both teams desperately need a win. yeah so I'm going to be doing my best to be optimistic that we can be the ones that win. But if you look at that... You're not going to be feeling the same optimism but for Brentford instead.
00:05:10
Speaker
Yeah, because I think for your your like recent run of form, it's better than ours, I think, from what I've seen. No, it has been better than you guys, I can't lie. So I'm hoping to see that continue.
00:05:23
Speaker
and we Yeah. I think our form at home is a lot better, but we have had like a rough run away. We had Liverpool city spurs. So I think that, yeah, I've got a good feeling. Like we haven't considering all the, you know, Tony leaving all the injuries, things like that. Uh, I'm less worried about us than I thought I would be. If that makes sense. Yeah. I think that's a good thing. And with the window as well, obviously, um, I know you signed as a car value from Liverpool. Yeah. Yeah.
00:05:55
Speaker
Yeah, I think that's a ridiculously good signing for the money. When I saw that, I was like, OK, finally, like we're actually spending some money. Thank God. Although, we did also sign a different Brazilian. We signed Igo Tiago, who, of course, got injured before this event even started. And I think he, many of us, thought that he would be the obvious Tony replacement. yeah So we haven't been able to see him yet. so And now with Whistler as well. It's looking a little more shaky, but I'm sure we can...

Concerns About Upcoming Matches

00:06:27
Speaker
Brentford, I feel like we have lacking resources, but we always make the most of what we do have. So hopefully that happens on Saturday.
00:06:34
Speaker
Yeah, I do have that. I think it's very similar for us. I mean, I spoke with the Fulham guys not too long ago at ESPN. And it's bre with with the previous results anyway, but Brentford's always that team for me when I see us playing on the in the upcoming matches, that is one where I get a bit worried because you see results coming from, you think sometimes it might be a win there or we could have a really good set form. And I'll look at Brentford and go, actually, I can see the points changing another way.
00:07:02
Speaker
um but But yeah, I mean, I guess that big question then is so with with all these injuries, how front do you think the the goals are going to be coming? Where are they coming from? I think that, you know, obviously, an attacking team, and I don't think Frank will change that.
00:07:18
Speaker
even with the injuries. And I know that he's been relying more on, obviously we've got Brian who did score at the weekend. So I think he's one to look out for. And I think that now with these injuries and with Tony gone, it's time for Kevin Sharper to really prove himself. I don't think when he joined us, I think people were expecting big things, but he was quite young and I think it's taken him a while to get used to the prem. So I'd be expecting him to, you know, be one to look out for as well.
00:07:46
Speaker
okay and you know as we were talking before he said when you see us on the like sorry when you see that you're playing us you always feel nervous right so at the last four um of our five home games against you yeah we've won them all including the three in the Premier League but having said that in February I was surprised um but also not too surprised that you beat us four to Yeah, it we have to remember that as well. Yeah, I mean, the last four games for you guys at home, it's been wins. The last six games, you've won five and we've won one of them being the last

Team Form and Manager's Decisions

00:08:26
Speaker
one in February. So yeah that's the other reason for me to be rather scared, isn't it? So the ah the only hope I can have is that both, you know, that game we did play, obviously, it was four goals from us, I think it was in February. Yeah, it was four goals.
00:08:38
Speaker
Yeah, it's a Bowen hat trick. I'm scared for him. I'm scared of him on Saturday. I absolutely love him. I think he's just one of those players that everyone's worried about. And I say a lot of my mates are Liverpool fans at home. And I always used to say about how Klopp used to rave so much about Bowen. But all that does is just gives me so much fear because it means that I know that there's going to be some players that will probably be out the door if we don't have a good season this year. So yeah.
00:09:07
Speaker
the likes of Bowen, Kudos as well, who has just been absolutely setting our team alight with the runs that he does make. He's he's just absolutely incredible on the wings. So it's that we've got the players apart from the actual clinical striker at the moment. Yeah, we've got that striker problem with the fact that now we've got no full crook who was our, I'd probably say one of our most impactful signings for positions that we need because we're so lacking up there at the moment. We've got Antonio who can do a job at holding players up and allowing the wingers to have that freedom and because both of them can play at that kind of more central forward position with Bowen obviously playing forward for us previously with Moyes and also when he's been for his um his international stints as well. It's one where we're a little bit now hoping that we just need him to either really do a job for us but his form has been lacking so much in the last five games and I really am shocked to see that he's
00:09:59
Speaker
getting more, he's getting more minutes, I thought he would be considering because. lo On Saturday, i i can't know went the capeite the highlights I saw, he didn't look as much as a threat as I thought he would be. But I don't know if that's, I was going to ask this later on, but we'll move on to talk about your new manager after the first ad break.

New Manager Challenges

00:10:48
Speaker
Right, so as I was saying before, how like what are your thoughts on your new manager and what does he need to do to prove himself? If you'd asked me a few games ago, I'd be more confident. yeah Our run in form has been absolutely dire, which for me has been a bit more of a concern with the, I think a lot more of the fan base now we're saying is the grass always greener after David Moyes. And I think after the Chelsea game, Moyes is probably sat at home laughing with a cup of tea because Villa loss, Palace a win, it was a good game, but it didn't really show enough. If we'd have seen more wins like the Palace one, I'd be more confident. But then the loss against City, I mean, everyone's going to be saying it's a loss against City. i Controversially, I said to those boys after the game ah at GSP and City that I thought that we actually played surprisingly well in comparison. I don't think the stats quite showed how well we played for them.
00:11:39
Speaker
But we normally can have a yeah know quite good game with them as it is, but a loss against them still nonetheless. And I was very surprised to see us get a draw against Fulham. That Fulham game with a last minute equalizer from Danny Ings just shows how desperately we need to start turning things around. um I think from a signings perspective, I think most people will probably be saying that we've had quite a very busy window, but also a good one with some of the deals we've made. I think some of the likes of I'll say about Max Kilman has been one of the best centre backs I think. I've seen play for us there in the recent years, just in his solidarity at the moment at the back, considering he's come in during the window and he's played every game for us since and in pre-season.
00:12:20
Speaker
He's looked so solid. I mean, it's what you get from paying $40 million for ah from an ex-Wolves captain. So it's it's it's expected to see that performance. But I don't think you expect all your all your new signs to get settled so

Player Performances and Upcoming Matches

00:12:31
Speaker
quickly. And and he has ridiculously well. I'm very shocked that he probably didn't get a call up just for at least the international friendlies we had recently, because it probably would have been a different story if he had a gun. And it provides the option for anyone when we have those you know big jobs to do later on when we have all the next big tournaments.
00:12:48
Speaker
Yeah, a bit of a shock in that one. And then OneBassaka, as well, for me, I think, has been an absolute steal for the price we paid for him from everybody, to be honest. you know Being able to play at both positions at left and and and right back, and being able to come in as well. And I think everyone has that idea, i even I i say I have it as well, that OneBassaka can't attack really. And he's it's really his defensive game that's what it's known for. But within the first five minutes of getting his first proper game time,
00:13:13
Speaker
is properly involved in getting an assist with Bowen. So for that sense, i'm I'm happy that he's done such a good job so far. I just want to see everyone else coming into fruition. yeah ah We've just had such problems with getting everyone involved. But um yeah, it's it's just been a bit of a busy one with it, to be honest. and I still don't think we've got our guaranteed first team lineup yet, which I think what we can see from every every game so far, we're making subs in the first half, halftime subs and the wrong subs in the second half, which thought I've been moaning about this week, because one of our biggest signings that I've been looking forward to seeing Somerville from Leeds, because we paid absolutely pennies for him. And he's been incredible, looking like he really wants to score. And you want to see that from your forward players. And it's always a passion really to drive, but we haven't
00:13:59
Speaker
we haven't almost had that really apart from you know from him and a few of the other forwards but getting subbed off against Chelsea within the you know very early part of the second half we're already getting boos from from to the managers from our substitutions already choices so yeah to be honest quite a few of the his decisions seem very random like even from an outside perspective like I saw I think Was he saying that Fabianski's to start tonight? So I wonder if that will happen again on Saturday. Who knows? Yeah. i ah know Yeah. Yeah. it's It's weird. I mean, I think everyone kind of calls it at the moment. It's La Potegi's lucky dip. No one really knows what's going to be on the scorecard. And I've not actually seen about Fabianski starting because that's news to me right now. So I'm now very worried.
00:14:47
Speaker
because we've been saying that Fabianski's got poppadom wrists when it comes to catching balls. So it's ah it's just one of those things where we always seem to get the balls going into very dangerous areas even after a first initial save. So I'm a bit worried. Yeah, but I mean, it's it's tricky, isn't it? Because this is a situation where we've got two big teams, two big London, and London teams as well. So I don't really know how this game is going to shape up against us at the weekend. I really can't call it to be honest, because you guys have had better form in the last couple of games. But also as well, every all of us need a win, I think. There's a lot of teams that haven't had the best start so far to the season. So it's very tricky so far. But and how are you who you most, I guess, scared of seeing from us? And who are you most hyped to see for um for you guys to get a goal on the score sheet? So I'd say, as I mentioned before, definitely
00:15:41
Speaker
Considering his like last hat trick last time we met, darwin like obviously, I think despite his maybe lackluster performance on Saturday, he's still a big threat for us. And I do think that... Oh, sorry. One sec.
00:15:58
Speaker
And four, in terms of whom I'm excited to see from Brentford, definitely Dan Scard. I think this season he's come back, he had various health issues. I think he had arthritis, like they were quite serious um and everyone knew that he was capable of more and it was only it's only been the last few games where he's really strode.
00:16:17
Speaker
what he's made of in a Brentford shirt so I think that'll be exciting and I think now that because of our injuries as I keep mentioning he's got that opportunity to be consistent in the starting lineup so I think that if anything this will just increase his confidence and prove like what we all knew he was capable of before his health issues things like that. Yeah that's that's fair enough I think the the big thing I've been Dan's got one of those players I've always seen that I think I saw him as when we played we played against Denmark and all that round of the it was euros a few years ago now. ah He just absolutely turned up and I thought, wow, that'd be a really good signing for out for a London club. Unfortunately, it wasn't a London club. So he came over to where like, it seems all the Danish players decided to go. So yeah.
00:17:06
Speaker
No, but he looked, it's weird because I've not seen him since do too much. and know yes I don't realise as to why, so that makes a lot more sense now. He's always been that, oh, I've not seen Damsagar play. So, yeah, a bit of an interesting one. But if he has that opportunity, then more reason for me to be scared, it sounds like

Memorable London Derby Days

00:17:21
Speaker
so. Yeah, I think he's definitely one to watch out for on Saturday.
00:17:25
Speaker
And oh, what was I going to say? Oh, yeah. Any standout Derby days, London Derby days, any stories you'd like to share? This is like a question I like to ask all our London Derby crossover episodes.
00:17:38
Speaker
Yeah, i've've I've got one that I think was just an absolutely incredible one that i'm goingnna always I think every West Ham fan will think about. And it wasn't too long ago. It was during our sort of COVID era of football when anything can happen. And it was West Ham versus Tottenham. Now, for for me, it was one of those games where I sat watching it at home. I was actually at university at the time. And it was one of those games where I was surrounded by a Man United fan and an Arsenal fan who wanted, obviously, C Spurs beat us, but they just honestly then beat each other's teams.
00:18:06
Speaker
But, um, at the time we went three nil down in the first half to Tottenham, which is just one of the, you want to turn off at that point and it's miserable. We still had the likes of, oh, Bono was playing most of the games. And I just, I can't believe that we did at the time because the amount of that the pace that you had at the time was just not, not, not all we needed. But the the quality wasn't there. I think Antonio was in one of those seasons where we'd get a few goals out of him. Bowen was just starting to come into the lineup.
00:18:30
Speaker
And obviously, Declan Rice doing the job in midfield until he's obviously gone now. but But reminiscing on those days, it was incredible because 3-0 down in the first half, me almost giving up. And in the final, they scored three goals in 20 minutes. And we scored in the final 15 minutes three more goals. And it was the Lanzini equalizer for me was the one where it's the big Lanzini shot from outside the box off the volley. And it goes straight top corner. And commentators go wild. And me off my sofa also goes wild as well.
00:19:00
Speaker
So that's my biggest one. Have people asked you what yours is as well? I'd say mine was it was probably it was just this is just after Covid we could go back um away at Chelsea but and I remember getting the bus because obviously you could just get the bus there and I think we ended up winning like 4-2 and that was just the atmosphere, everything. I was like, the amount of people, because I was still in sixth form, and half the people supported either Chelsea or Fulham, and then there was every other team, and the me, the one Brentford fan. So I was like, ready to come into school, chatting about it the whole next week.

School Bragging Rights

00:19:37
Speaker
Yeah, ah that was just, that was a good memory.
00:19:39
Speaker
I think it's really good when you're in that kind of point of education and and around that time of when when your team wins you just get pure bragging rights like and it doesn't matter if you know you could just win one nil at the weekend or even even if it was a draw against a big team you could still give it the big ones you know ah so I used to love doing it if it was that result you get against a big team when you knew there was those fans in school or you know say at university even work I think for most people these days is the big one if your team's played whether it's the ah it's quite the big one I'm I'm currently ah living in Nottingham at the moment. I live about a stone's throw away from the forest ground and the absolute rivalry I get between all of the people up here is ah is incredible. Well, that sounds good. Right, we'll go to a quick outbreak and then give our final school predictions before we head off.

00:21:08
Speaker
Right. Every time I've done one of these episodes with everyone else, I have always said something absolutely ridiculous. So today is the first time I'm going to be quite screwed on with my prediction. Previously, every game that we've played, there's always been a minimum of two goals. yeah I'm not going to be surprised if we see that again. I just don't know which way the goals are going to go. Optimistically, I'm going to say we win 2-1.
00:21:32
Speaker
Okay. I'm going to say a two-all draw. That's after school. I think there'll be a lot of goals. That's what I think. I think so. I think there'll there'll be that desperation from both teams that they're going to need to do that. Do you, I know you guys have been playing in a sort of three to five back recently. How, how do you reckon you guys will shape up this weekend? I think probably similar just because of injuries and stuff like that. We just really, I think at the minute we just can't really,
00:21:57
Speaker
change our formation ah as it stands. And to see people come back, please, go hopefully they get better soon because we've been waiting for a little time. but yeah That's weird. I always thought that I'd be moaning, but at least we can change our formation at the moment with the players that we've got. We are literally on sort of thin ice in terms of like we cannot make any more formation changes at this point. They're dropping fires, honestly.
00:22:24
Speaker
No, that's a tricky one. I think what if you guys do that's gonna be difficult to break down for us because I think we've been typically playing in a four back formation, but I mean in Chelsea we saw a very wide sort of We're playing a three backslash off the ball and needing it a five back to try and retain it But I think that it's gonna be tricky. So I'm hoping we stay with our normal four back formation of a bit, you know 4-3-3, but it'll say I might have to put some bets on for Pachita to get some yellow cards because I think that's what's maybe a That's what will get us to win. I think if I bet for him to win then then we'll be all right Sounds good. All right. Thanks for joining me today. Josh Everyone thanks for listening and make sure to give us a rating Every club every day the global sports podcast network
