Introduction & Wild Card Wednesday

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, guys, and welcome back to another episode of the Daily GSPN West Ham Podcast. We've got a Wild Card Wednesday for you today. I'm joined by Jacob. Say hi, mate.
00:00:17
Jacob
Hello, how are you doing?
00:00:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm

Jared Bowen's Impact on England & Confidence

00:00:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
doing OK. So before we get into the antics of Wild Card Wednesday, I want to have a little bit of just kind of general West Ham chat about stuff that's been going on with the club. First thing I want to mention is Jared Bowen scoring for England. How did you feel about that?
00:00:34
Jacob
Yeah, massive, massive moment for him and
00:00:41
Jacob
it's you know It's quite a long time coming, really. i mean um I'm not sure how many appearances he's made now, probably six, seven, something like that. um and yeah The way it came about was so good, you know about 15 seconds on the pitch, first touch, great finish. and yeah probably I think he's the 12th ever player to score, West Ham player to score for England, I'm pretty sure I read.
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
huge
00:01:10
Jacob
so yeah huge moment um representing us and yeah i mean hopefully it'll give him a little bit more confidence to bring that to the club um because if he if he can pull that out for us i'm not saying that our our club is as strong as the england team but um me i mean yeah if if he can bring even
00:01:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Huge.
00:01:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not too far. Yeah, it's pretty far. it's pretty
00:01:41
Jacob
a little bit of that um in the in the Newcastle game, which we're not really focusing on today, then we'll be happy.

Should Bowen Join Tuchel's Squad?

00:01:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think it's a little bit of positive momentum that we can hopefully try and capitalize on. And the other thing, I think it was a travesty that he wasn't in the initial squad, to be honest. Like, you look at the names of players that did get there.
00:02:00
Jacob
and
00:02:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jared Bowen has been so consistent and he scores big goals in big games and he always has done for us. You know, scoring in the conference league final, he's scored against Man City a few times. he He scores in big games against really good opposition.
00:02:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And to be able to even just, like consistently perform in the Premier League means that you have to have a really high ability and I think he does have that so hopefully that kind of pushes him more in the reckoning for a squad under Thomas Tuchel who's obviously going to ah become England manager I think in the new year.
00:02:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, I think he has to be there and I think that Thomas Tuchel will pick him because he's someone that has witnessed him play in person many times and I think he will know the quality.
00:02:35
Jacob
Yeah.
00:02:39
Jacob
Yeah.
00:02:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Do you think you'll get in Thomas Tuchel's squad?
00:02:48
Jacob
yeah that's that's the thing isn't it really i think i mean i don't want to call it a bias as such but um with the likes of lee karsley having been under 21's manager for some time um that gives someone like madeweke the sort of um you know, the favorable choice for him, because, you know, he's worked so closely with him. And, you know, he, he brought so many of those under 21 players that hadn't previously, ah you know, barely got a sniff for England, you know, the likes of Curtis Jones, Hall, you know, people like that. um And Angel obviously. and Yeah, know those sort of players.
00:03:41
Jacob
And so I think maybe Tougal might look at it slightly differently. Obviously, there was a couple of great performances in there with, you know, Jones, for example, he was excellent. um But I think, you know, having seen whilst he was at Chelsea, the capability of the likes of Bowen, I think I'm sure he'll he'll take him with him. You know, it's that right wing position isn't probably one of our position England's positions with the most depth anyway, so only really got Sacher other than that. So, you know, it's um it's not really um a ah position that I think if you've been playing in a different position, I think you'd find it much more difficult to get in. But, you know, we always but always love to see him there.
00:04:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Well, I think, you know, if we're talking about it just blatantly, Jared Bowen is a better footballer than Noddy Madawake. I think that's kind of. maybe an unpopular opinion for other fans but I think he just is so you hope that obviously you can kind of you have to take picks for a nation league squad slightly with a pinch of salt I think because it's not necessarily a competition where you need to consistently perform and I think sometimes it can is more better used as a place for players to kind of prove themselves so
00:04:47
Jacob
Yeah.
00:05:09
Jacob
Yeah.
00:05:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
I guess only time will tell when it actually comes to a a major competition to see if you know Jarabone is in the squad but I think he should be and hopefully by the time we get there we will actually work that out. um
00:05:20
Jacob
Yeah.

Lopategi's Potential at West Ham

00:05:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so I wanna talk about Lopategi a little bit. I know this has been the kind of talk of West Ham right now, like should Lopategi stay? How long should he stay? We've previously had discussions in past podcasts about you know how long we think he's gonna get, um what we think is going wrong. What is your just kind of general feeling about Lopategi and what do you think needs to change in order for him to be able to implement his kind of tactical ideas and tactical influence on the squad maybe not obviously you're not going to be able to talk about training ground girls or whatever but something needs to change what what do you think that is
00:06:00
Jacob
thus That's quite a tough one, really. I mean, we don't see what what goes on behind the scenes you know in the training, in the halftime changing room. um It's a tough one. I think he needs to just find you know, whatever he had at Sevilla, he needs to incorporate that here as well. You know, it's so such a talented group of players. um And there just doesn't really seem to be a huge amount of cohesion between them, which is what we need. And, you know, it's natural that you bring all of these new players together and they don't gel straight away.
00:06:47
Jacob
But they knew that risk when they you know but they made all those signings and there's no way we shouldn't be in a but you know a better position than we were last year. So I think basically what he needs to do is just do what he thinks is the best thing he can do and you know try and get victories whatever way possible.
00:07:14
Jacob
and try and give us some kind of identity, try and bring this um possession-based, you know, not counter-attack football, like we're used to seeing, and that we we were expecting from him, which we haven't really seen, to be honest. I thought, we all kind of thought, oh, he's going to, this is how he's going to play them. We're looking forward to seeing it because it's totally different to what we've ever seen, really. So I think we're all still waiting to see what that is and hopefully that that's something that will come in time if he's given the time
00:07:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I completely agree. yeah It is probably a difficult question to ask because what can you from the outside specifically suggest? But I think the way you put it is actually really good. it He just needs to try, like try and continue doing what he's doing. And realistically, if he is in the job, all he can do is try and implement the systems that he is. And I still think it will come good at some point. It's just, I don't know if he'll be given enough time for it to come good.
00:08:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that's kind of the discussion. um Yeah, I guess only time will tell, really.
00:08:24
Jacob
it Yeah.
00:08:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
like It's difficult, isn't it?
00:08:28
Jacob
And it's it's not like we, you know, we can't say iss it's all been bad and there's not been moments where we've been good um because there have been, it's not been 100% negative, hard to watch football from us, but ah at the end of the day, we're not seeing enough um, week in, week out of his, you know, stamp of authority on the team, you know, bringing what he wants. You know, we're not seeing that we, we're seeing a group of players that you don't really know what you're going to get until you've seen it. And it's happened and you know, Oh, this happened, this game, you know, that player is of such high caliber.
00:09:19
Jacob
they didn't perform today for whatever reason. And that's something, yeah, he he definitely needs to work on. um Because, yeah, like I say, the group we have now is so strong and needs more needs to come out of them. Otherwise they're not going to want to hang around.
00:09:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, I agree. You just want to see a little bit more consistency when it comes to good performances because there's you know there's been glimpses and there's been players that have had good games but we need to start seeing games like a game where we have everyone plays really well like the Ipswich game.
00:09:45
Jacob
Yeah.
00:09:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then we need another one on top of that, because all sports about

Building Momentum in Sports

00:09:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
momentum. I know I've said that before, but if you want to have any sort of success, you have to build momentum. And a momentum is something that's difficult to generate. But when you can start it, that first step is always the most difficult one. So then when it gets rolling, I think we really could press on, especially with the individual quality that we do have. OK, we're going to go to our first advert, and then we are going to get back to what is this actual topic for this Wildcard Wednesday. We're going to be doing some start, bench, sell questions.

Player Preferences: Zarate, Valencia, Antonio

00:10:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so these first three I have three start bench sell questions each of them have three ah three plays in them I want to Okay, so these ones aren't really about ability. I just want you to tell me that based on your own personal preference, how you feel. You can do it based on ability if you want, but I want these to be based on your experiences, your feelings about them, how they made you feel, you know, what you think of them as a player. Okay, so the first one, start bench sell, Mauro Zarate, Anna Valencia, and Michael Antonio. You've got a start one, you've got a bench one, you've got a sell one.
00:11:28
Jacob
That is very tough. um
00:11:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
the Is there any one of those that sticks out in a particular place?
00:11:35
Jacob
I think the one that sticks out the most for me is probably Ben Chantonio. Just purely for the, obviously I i don't think he he you know is the one out of that three that deserves to be sold, just purely because of the the legacy he's had with us. I'm not trying to pretend like he's one of the Premier League's all-time great strikers, but the the impact he's had in the time he's been with us has been you know one of the biggest, if not the biggest of any West Town player in the you know in the Premier League era. like There's very few others, maybe Mark Noble,
00:12:22
Jacob
yeah when you're talking about the Premier League era though there's not many more um so for that reason I mean I'm not starting him because I'm not not starting him because I don't think he deserves it I just think that with his quality maybe he's not quite my number one choice um I think
00:12:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so who is the number one choice? That's the question.
00:12:49
Jacob
Ena Valencia is my number one choice.
00:12:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really?
00:12:52
Jacob
um I think so. um I think we didn't keep hold of him for as long as we should have.
00:12:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very interesting.
00:13:02
Jacob
um and We've just basically, even now, he's still a thriving player who still turns out for Ecuador, basically every game.
00:13:14
Jacob
and has gone on to have a great career since leaving us. I mean, maybe that tells you something about us, but I don't know. um So yeah, i that's my pick for the start.
00:13:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe.
00:13:29
Jacob
just be I just think he's a more exciting player than Antonio. you know I'd love to see, I've seen him in his prime with us. He wasn't really in his prime whilst we had him.
00:13:41
Jacob
He was good for us. He had a strange, um loan spell to everton which never really worked out for him and then moved on um so yeah i would put him i'd put him as my star and then sell zorata just yeah i mean i i just i don't think he had enough of an impact and was with us for long enough to deserve it i'm i'm mainly just talking about
00:14:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
That hurts. That really hurt.
00:14:15
Jacob
you know, longevity and and that kind of thing. I'm not sure what his overall appearance is for us, but it it can't have been a lot really. Let's see if I can quickly find it now.
00:14:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so he reminds me of the West Hampshire. I'm not sure what year it was, but the, the away one that was light blue with the Clara.
00:14:33
Jacob
Yeah.
00:14:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Stripe through the middle. Do you remember that?
00:14:39
Jacob
yeah Yeah, I do.
00:14:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's the one last that reminds me of massively. I can um i remember him.
00:14:44
Jacob
So yeah, I'm, I could tell you exactly.
00:14:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:14:46
Jacob
So he's got 29 games and seven goals.
00:14:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's not.
00:14:51
Jacob
So, I mean, for that return, it's not awful actually, when you look at it like that, but then, uh, this is really, I should have really got this beforehand, but I know, I know exactly.
00:15:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
What is difficult when I don't give you the players, you know?
00:15:06
Jacob
Oh yeah, that is very true actually. Um, and then we've got. Valencia, who played nearly 70 games, um didn't score a lot of goals.
00:15:20
Jacob
However, since leaving us, he went on to score 59 in 116 for Fennebache. And, you know, and he he possibly could have done that for us if we'd have held on to him for a bit longer.
00:15:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Blimey.
00:15:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:36
Jacob
I think that was his prime years and I think I think maybe he, he learned some of that when he was with us. So yeah, that's, that's my reasoning behind that.
00:15:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, that that is very fair. Okay, we're going to move on to the second one this one is Might be more difficult might be easy.

Player Choices: Zouma, Reid, Collins

00:15:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know. You'll be I guess you'll decide that Kurt super winston reed and james collins Start bench sell those three players.
00:16:01
Jacob
Um,
00:16:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is very very niche I know this obviously this is a worst-hand podcast, but i'm not sure there's many people that have done this start bench sell before
00:16:08
Jacob
and
00:16:12
Jacob
That is very tough, to be honest. Because they're... they're... To be honest, they're three players that aren't that dissimilar to each other, really. I mean, I think... That is tough. um i I think I'm going to actually have to sell Kurt Zuma, to be honest.
00:16:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think I agree.
00:16:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I actually agree.
00:16:49
Jacob
Just, I dunno, I dunno what it is, but he, I don't think he's been as much of a clutch player or a, you know, fan favorite as the other two.
00:17:00
Jacob
I don't think he quite.
00:17:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's the likeability, isn't it?
00:17:04
Jacob
Yeah, partly the likability as well.
00:17:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
blah.
00:17:07
Jacob
I just don't think he quite deserves to get in there. um To be honest, I think maybe his injuries and that sort of thing, maybe he's never really been an exciting player for us either.
00:17:20
Jacob
um So yeah, that's selling Zuma, unfortunately. um And then I'm going to put James Collins
00:17:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Left with the Welshman and the Kiwi.
00:17:34
Jacob
Yeah, I'm putting a Welshman on the bench um who I think, to be honest, he's kind of a toss-up between those two for me.
00:17:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:17:44
Jacob
um I don't think there's a huge amount in it. Collins was a long-time servant for us um and was a very consistent centre-back, you know, old-school, no-nonsense Santa back and I know he still has a lot of love for Paul so um Yeah, I think He's on the bench and then just edging him is Winston Reed for his Just general overall ability to be honest. I think that's all I can put it down to just um athletic ability and
00:18:24
Jacob
general footballing IQ. I think he's ah he's the best centre back that we've had out of those three. So yeah, not for not for longevity on that one. um But yeah, Reed is deserving of but of the top place for me.
00:18:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think Winston Reid is a little bit of ah a cult here at West Ham, isn't he? He's such a...
00:18:45
Jacob
Yeah.
00:18:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think he was ever amazing, but there was a time where... I'm trying to think what year... It must must have been the, like, early 2000s, early 2010s, it must have been, maybe late, late 2000s, early 2010s, where he was actually really good, really solid, and and I really liked how he played as a footballer.
00:18:57
Jacob
yeah
00:19:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
He always seemed like...
00:19:05
Jacob
Yeah.
00:19:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah bit of a bit of a general which which I'm always really attracted to um okay so the last one before we go to a break kudos Kevin Nolan and Marco Arnautovic start bench sell it's tough that's that's really tough Kevin Nolan and Marco Arnautovic yes
00:19:21
Jacob
sir So what was it? Kudos.
00:19:29
Jacob
wow um all right straight off the bat i'm selling Arnautovic that might not be i think out of the three that that is the easiest one to pick just purely because he wasn't really with us long enough to be as impactful as he could could have been and
00:19:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh.
00:19:54
Jacob
You know, he's played for loads and loads of clubs and I don't feel too bad selling him, to be honest. um And then I'm going... I'm going kudos on the bench because there's still a lot to come from him. You know, almost certainly if he decides to be with us long-term, there's still a lot to come.
00:20:20
Jacob
Definitely. We've seen it already um and I'm sure it will continue and then start Nolan for his and i general service and um how long yeah how long he was with us and then his role as ah as a um backroom staff as well. So i think I think that's probably the easiest one you've given me out of all of those.
00:20:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think that's fair. I think Kevin Nolan just as a player, I think is probably the top of that list. And then you you factor in the coaching stuff and him being part of the coaching team that won the conferences kind of makes it difficult for anyone else to get above him.
00:20:55
Jacob
Yeah.
00:20:59
Jacob
Yeah.
00:21:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. We're going to go to an ad break now. And when we get back, we are going to do two more start bench sales. These ones might be a little bit more difficult.
00:21:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so these ones are going to be more difficult.

Tough Decisions: Rice, Noble, Payet

00:21:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so Fourth one I have for you start bench sell mark. Nolan Declan rise to meet you player Mark noble, was sorry as say might knowling sorry it's because i've got an air on my phone he doesn't exist um you know i mean Mark noble
00:21:42
Jacob
Who the hell is Martin Olin?
00:21:50
Jacob
I'll sell him because he doesn't exist. um Sorry, just say him again. You made me forget him. Sorry.
00:22:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Declan Wright and Gonna need an answer for me.
00:22:00
Jacob
Yeah.
00:22:02
Jacob
Oh, that is almost impossible.
00:22:08
Jacob
All right. um
00:22:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Where do you even start with this one?
00:22:12
Jacob
i
00:22:15
Jacob
I'm going to sell.
00:22:17
Jacob
I'm going to sell Declan Rice because it's already happened and I'm
00:22:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we've already gone through that pain.
00:22:25
Jacob
Um, yeah, I'm over that now. So I don't think that it's as big of a deal as we thought it was at the time. And I think that yeah, over the other two, I don't think I, I think he has to go. Um, and then this is tough. Um, I'm going to go.
00:22:49
Jacob
Yeah, i'm gonna I'm going to bench Pyatt and I'm going to start Noble. i We know how good Pyatt was at that time, the best the best player.
00:23:01
Jacob
ah He's not our best ever player, ah I don't think, but during that period, he's the best West Ham player has ever been you know in the Premier League era or at least.
00:23:13
Jacob
During that two seasons, he was the best we'd ever had. so um And he would have been my start had Noble not have been in there. and But I think that it would be very unfair not to put him as the starter for obvious reasons.
00:23:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that that is that's very fair. I think it's really difficult when you've got such a ah good selection of players like that because you think Dimitri Pyatt at his peak that one season, I think that's you know in my lifetime, that's the best I've ever seen a player play for West Ham.
00:23:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was absolutely unbelievable.
00:23:54
Jacob
Yeah.
00:23:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was unstoppable. um And then you look at Mark Noble and he's not necessarily the highest performer, but he is the most consistent. And I think for so many years, he was so consistent, you know, a really good player for us. and you know, went up, ah came down with us, got back promoted with us, and was the captain for such a long time. I think it's such a shame that he retired before the conference, because if he was able to lift that trophy, that would have been amazing. um Yeah, I think that's that's very well-reasoned arguments, to be honest. um Okay, so final one. This one isn't actually for players that are, most decorators wasn't at West Ham, but they are West Ham Academy graduates.

West Ham Academy's Talent

00:24:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the three players I'm gonna pick are Joe Cole,
00:24:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Michael Carrick and Rio Ferdinand. all West Ham Academy graduates. And I think this is, sorry, before you get started into this, this is something that's so underrated about us as a club.
00:24:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have one of the best academies, like historically in the country. We've produced so many good players and they're considered legends of other teams, but they came through our youth ranks.
00:24:55
Jacob
Yeah
00:25:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I also wanna put, if there was a fourth, it would be Declan Rice because he is a West Ham Academy graduate and not a Chelsea Academy graduate. Chelsea got rid of him because they didn't think he was good enough.
00:25:09
Jacob
Yeah.
00:25:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
We signed him. and now he's a player that he is. So it's our doing a nutshell, but that's a different story.
00:25:17
Jacob
yeah Um, so I'm going to go, going to sell.
00:25:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:26
Jacob
I'm going to sell. I think I'm going to sell Joe Cole.
00:25:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.

Despite his, I mean, they're all extremely, on their day, extremely good players. And it's a very tough one to pick again. um But Joe Cole is the one that goes for me.
00:25:50
Jacob
That's purely because i I don't think he's as good as the other two, personally. That's all it is. um And then I am going to bench Michael Carrick.
00:26:05
Jacob
um and big You know, Man United fans will tell you how good Carrick was and how he should be in that conversation with, you know, Lampard, Gerard, Sculls.
00:26:17

Global Sports Podcast Network
On the commitment of quality.
00:26:26
Jacob
Exactly. Um, whereas I think with Joe Cole, there was more similar players like him in that, in that period. Um, but we're, yeah, with Carricki, he's definitely a standout performer. Um, and then Rio is number one, because, you know, he's one of the best centre backs England has ever had. Um, top top three, for sure.
00:26:53
Jacob
maybe top five probably top three um so yeah that's that's my picks
00:26:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's good. and I think it it just highlights the sort of quality that we have juiced and This also makes me hope that we can, this season, because it's been so poor so far, surely we can get some of the Academy boys into the ah starting 11 just to give them an opportunity because it doesn't really seem like there's been a great amount of quality in the players that have been playing so far. So if there's ever a time to give the young boys a chance, it's now and you know, you look back historically, we've produced some amazing talent. So hopefully there's some more in the Academy like raring to go.
00:27:32
Jacob
Yeah, definitely.
