Match Results & Club News

00:00:10
Josh Keech
Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of GSPN Daily West Ham brought to you by myself, Josh Keach and Tom Elkins. How you doing buddy?
00:00:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I am doing okay mate, I'm doing all right. The result was slightly underwhelming, but I'm sure we'll get into that.
00:00:22
Josh Keech
Yeah, it's just one of those, isn't it? I think i think we've said that every every couple of games really is just one of those and I'll get onto my thoughts on that anyway later. But yeah, it's not the not position I thought I'd be speaking to you from, you know, with the last couple of minutes in the game.
00:00:38
Josh Keech
but yeah we move.

Bournemouth vs. West Ham Expectations

00:00:41
Josh Keech
So we're here to obviously break down the match in details for you guys tonight, as well as also talk about the general news revolving around the club, obviously following the match as well. Obviously, I think the biggest biggest talks have obviously been around transfers with the upcoming window equally as well. The obviously big big news i was around Antonio early last week and and alongside that we've obviously got the constant imminent manager rumors that came to always be circling around us at the moment. But Let's start with the match obviously Bournemouth West Ham a bit of a tricky one going into it obviously Bournemouth got a really good four haven't they it's always been one of those at the moment where they've they've took a few points of some of the bigger teams and It's one where I didn't know how we were gonna look but I anticipated it was gonna be quite a close game from my early predictions But how how do you think sort of leading up to how are you feeling?
00:01:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's a strange one, isn't it? The thing that struck

Board's Perspective on Bournemouth Game

00:01:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
me the most is the way that the board viewed the game. The rumours coming out of the camp were that the owners and the people like back of house basically said that if we lose this game, Bournemouth are a good enough team to where it's not him getting sacked if we lose, which to me is slightly damning towards the way that the club views the squad right now like if it's if getting beaten by Bournemouth is something that we have to be okay with then we're really in a ah poor position to be honest like I don't think there's ever a time where you should go into
00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know, most Premier League games, you know, when Man City in their pump, you know, you kind of go into that game expecting not to really get anything out of it, but a normal, decent Bournemouth team isn't the sort of prospect that you would expect to be viewed by the board as a team that are good enough to beat us, and that if we do get beaten, then Lopategi keeps his job, you know, like,
00:02:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's it feels like it's underselling us a lot which I think was a bit frustrating but I think fans generally thought that we could win this game Bournemouth are good and they have quality but also You know, they they are beatable. they're They're not absolutely amazing. They've just got a little bit of quality here and there, which is able to, you know, when they when they play good football, which they do quite a lot, they're able to beat teams, but definitely not unbeatable. So I think the expectation was, again, the same thing that we've been saying every week is where we want to show that we can play good football. We want to show that we can compete and we want the morale of the team and the fans and the club generally to be boosted by a good performance.
00:03:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
the

West Ham's Performance Analysis

00:03:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
the result is a lot of the times kind of secondary because if we get a win but we look absolutely terrible you know the man united win we were not great in that game but we won and yeah it was it positive short term but then you look back at it and you go oh like we did win but it wasn't really the sort of galvanized performance that is going to convince you of long-term success so it was the actual game itself this bournemouth game was slightly frustrating for me i think
00:03:15
Josh Keech
Yeah.
00:03:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
In large portions of the game, I think probably the middle section, like right at the beginning and right at the end, I think Bournemouth was definitely the better team. But in the they kind of large bulk of the middle of the game, I think we were a lot better. I think we should have scored a lot more. It was very frustrating. There was a lot of shots from both teams, you know, we were both kind of in and around it and also just shout out to Fabianzky because he had an absolute blinder. He made, I think this is the most amount of saves he's made in a game this season. So yeah, he was quality. ah His age is about 39. It's a bit ridiculous to be honest, but.
00:04:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah it's frustrating a missed opportunity to get some points but at the same time how much can you complain when it's such a an amazing free kick because the free kick was amazing you know it was there's not really anything anyone can do about it other than maybe maverick panels not giving away a silly foul but you know a hundred times they take a free kick from there and it doesn't go in so the fact that it it was that one time that did not overly critical of maverick panels in that situation but definitely a missed opportunity to gain some more points.
00:04:38
Josh Keech
Yeah

Defensive Improvements & Form Struggles

00:04:39
Josh Keech
it's it's one of those I think there's there's lots to unpack with it because you're with the board you're on the ball with it because realistically the whole thing about if we if we lose to Bournemouth is because they're you know it's because they're a good team. I think that's it's so wrong because we look back to about a month ago and we drew to Everton.
00:04:58
Josh Keech
And I wouldn't say that Everton are a team that it's okay that we shouldn't sack Lopategi if we if we lost when we probably could have lost that game. Just the fact that it was a bit of a stalemate sleeper of a game to be honest. But it's just one of those where I kind of think they can't say it that that you can't really treat it on an on game basis of who you're playing because at the moment, it's not to do with each game as it comes is to do with the fact that the form is not there. And it seems to be that it's still not clicking.
00:05:24
Josh Keech
there has been individual improvements. I think the defensive line has looked a bit better than it has done in in probably the last two or three months. I think if we're at that kind of point now we're almost sort of wrapping up the winter part of the season and and obviously the start till Christmas. that That kind of this first half has been noticeably improved along the back line, obviously we said Kilman at the start of the season was good, I think Juan Bassaca hasn't really fell off too much of the mark considering that we've asked him to play in different positions, he's been one of the more solid signings so far. We always say with Mavropanos that he has been shaky and I think that's always been his case and that hasn't improved but i think I think generally the consistency across it has been a bit better and I think we can see that with obviously the results now where we're not losing as horrifically anymore.
00:06:09
Josh Keech
But I guess the other big bonus is the fact that, as you say, both teams are really attacking the fact that the the last couple of games, we've had so many more shots that I'd be expecting us to take. And ah that's like obviously

Injuries & Shot Opportunities Concerns

00:06:20
Josh Keech
a good thing, but we're then looking at the problem of why aren't we getting as many in as we should be. And obviously we've got the issues with that, you know, upfront of the problem, and you know, thought group started, uh, to get some more minutes, which is one thing that I've been shouting about for God knows how long at this point, obviously his injuries not helped.
00:06:37
Josh Keech
But it's just one of those it's nice to see things like that because they're hopefully some reassuring signs But I guess the big question that everyone wants to know is whether it's too late or not full opportunity Depending on whatever the next results are and some of the games coming up obviously Not particularly great fixtures coming up.
00:06:55
Josh Keech
I think it's brighter next isn't it? So it's one of our one of our bogeys.
00:06:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:59
Josh Keech
So it's Never the best fixtures, but you know, we don't have great results against them in our previous history I think we always triple with those guys but Yeah, I think there's just loads of it we we can unpack from it from the season so far that's led up to these kind of games right now where I think and We're going to have to start asking questions soon.
00:07:16
Josh Keech
Is it that time or is it not regarding La Batega's future? Because I don't think the board can be doing it based on one-off games and saying it's okay because Bournemouth are a better team because a couple of seasons ago we'd be saying, hold on a minute, Bournemouth, easy three points.
00:07:29
Josh Keech
Whereas now I think we're all getting a bit shaky, getting a bit maverick panos when we're asking about fixtures because we can't work out what's going on really. I think it's because we have a problem.
00:07:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it is difficult, isn't it? Because we're just in this middle ground where he's not been terrible enough to sack him straight away, but he's not been good enough to stop these questions about whether we should look at getting someone else in, you know, and the longer that kind of rigmarole of debate around his future goes on. I think the the less likely we're gonna be to be able to salvage our season. So I think realistically, this is this is what I was talking with Jake about in the last podcast is if we do bring a new manager in, we have to give them a full January transfer window. Like what's the point in signing a manager halfway through the window and then he's got, you know, two weeks to go and sign someone. If we if we bring someone in, we have to do it before Christmas. And if we don't do it before Christmas,
00:08:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think we should have talked because like how, how easy is it going to be to rectify a situation that's crumbling in March? You know,
00:08:30
Josh Keech
Mm.

Lopategi's Future Debate

00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
you've you've got a team that's going to be, their morale is going to be so low and they will have probably got themselves pretty low in the table.
00:08:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
So for a new manager to come in and completely change that around, I don't think it's going to happen and at that point. As long as we're not getting relegated, you might as well keep the same manager because you don't gain anything from signing a new one.
00:08:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
If that makes sense.
00:08:50
Josh Keech
Yeah. Yeah, also contract wise, I know he's not got a particularly long contract at the moment anyway. So obviously, the from a financial standpoint, which I'm sure that the board are going to obviously look at as well, the longer they keep him in, the the less they have to pay him at the end. So <unk>s i'm I'm sure that's how it's going to be. that yeah Lots of everything is going to factor into it. And I do agree with you in terms of transfers. I think it's but're we're looking at a point now of probably damage mitigation and making sure that we don't we don't get relegated or fall into that dangerous drop.
00:09:18
Josh Keech
my My overall opinion, I think, at the moment, if we're describing Lopategi's performance and form so far with the team, it's a bit like a cup of tea that's too warm, that you can't sack it off, but too cold, you can't drink it. yeah it's It's one of those things. A very very lukewarm cup of tea is how I describe them at the moment. and but um but But yeah, I mean, we need to dig more into this, really, about what's going on. But before we we discuss, I guess, individual performances and stats going up to the game, we need to have a word first from one of our sponsors. so
00:10:10
Josh Keech
Right, I guess the best protocol, obviously, with the match. So firstly, I wanted to talk to you about something. I don't know if

Rumor about Player Transfer Dismissed

00:10:17
Josh Keech
you've seen it recently, but just before the Bournemouth game, something came out in the news that gave me a bit of a worry. But equally, depending on how you take it, you can also be a reassurance as well. So I had seen a tweet from Packeter's account. I don't know if it's been deleted or not yet, but it was revolving around, he posted up a quote, but rumouring about the fact that he was going to be leaving.
00:10:38
Josh Keech
and um I wish I could get the full thing but I think he has removed it by now but um but yeah it was literally mid-afternoon yesterday of of the fact that it was going to be you know that they I feel like I'm running my time has come and I'm leaving kind of thing was the kind of it was almost like a poem with the way it was posted but something that I hadn't really thought about because I thought he was going to be locked in with us for a good bit of time now based on what's been going on with him in the wider news that I thought well actually Is Packatar going? going to be a ri Depending on, obviously, the I think the biggest thing is spending on money. But how how would you feel about that if that was one of the big moves in the window?
00:11:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
It would, yeah, it's a difficult one. It's all money, isn't it? You know, it depends how much money we get for him and the board's ability to go and find someone that's going to be able to contribute in the same way that he did, you know, for the same or, you know, you'd hope less money. So we have a little bit of profit that we can then play with elsewhere.
00:11:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
um My whole opinion about that situation, I don't really read much into it, to be honest. I think, you know, the way that Paquetta played in this game, he was actually one of the better players, you know, and his kind of general demeanor, I think has been a lot more settled and rooted in the club. You know, he scored in that game. So when he's celebrating and he knows he's running to the the manager and giving him a hug and like kissing the badge and stuff. I don't think someone does that and then goes and leaves in January. you know like He was the one that decided he wanted to take the but the penalty, he took the responsibility, he scored, runs over to Lopategi, kisses the badge and to me that's not someone that's planning on leaving anytime soon because that's that's only making a rob for your own back, isn't it? like
00:12:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
there would be no reason to do that unless you're just absolutely insane and you just like making people angry which I don't know you might do but I don't think that's how he thinks and I hope that he just likes West Ham and he enjoys being at the club and he loves the way that the fans adore him and is here for the long term I hope.
00:12:38
Josh Keech
Yeah, that's that's completely valid. I think from a financial standpoint, that's the probably only positive

Player Performance Highlights

00:12:43
Josh Keech
really news that comes with it because coming next year, we're either going to have lost 80 million, or, you know, he still gets to play and then we still get to obviously retain some financial value from a from financial perspective, at least but as you say you know brilliant performance brilliant penalty it's one where it's it's really hard to discount his you know attitudes towards West Ham in it's that's why i was a bit shocked to see this tweet because i couldn't really it was obviously geared it it was geared around football but
00:13:10
Josh Keech
whether it be obviously wider news and stuff is one that's always interesting but gave me a bit of worry because I do think that he does add quite a lot of value to how how the clubs know not only morale but also as well the performances that he does putting because we've said recently that maybe it's not been up to up to his usual standards but I think we get to see some of those games sometimes where we get to see that proper class come back and as you see I think this this game was probably one of those really So it's, it's one that gave me the worry because I've i've seen as well, obviously some of the players are rumored to leave and we're now short with Antonio out, which is absolutely gutting news.
00:13:42
Josh Keech
And I know that the, I think the club's releasing an update tonight regarding some, uh, some more wider news on how he's doing. So fingers crossed obviously with that one too, because that's always great to hear.
00:13:52
Josh Keech
And that's obviously ah we saw in the last game prior to this one, the how things like that can really give the the club that boost. So hopefully we get some positive news there as well. But yeah, I think.
00:14:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'd also like to cut out the club for continuing to pay his year's salary. I think it's something that they, <unk>t I think technically they didn't have to, but they've chosen to still pay him full salary the whole time that he's going to be in job with. I think it's amazing. and
00:14:17
Josh Keech
No. Well, that's always good news. I wasn't aware on that one. So we've brought actual news. We didn't, we didn't, we didn't brief each other on today. It was quite good. So that's a, that's good news for us. That's, that's our biggest win. Um, but yeah, I wanted to do just, uh, you spoke about it already as well. Uh, it's one with Fabiansky. i um I just couldn't believe how well he played from the match.
00:14:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
He is amazing somehow at his age. you know he's He's getting close to getting a free bus pass and he's still pulling out performances like that. like It's amazing. so i'm It's just his calmness. I think it is so good for the squad. And I think his presence behind the backline, I think has really helped. Because like you mentioned earlier, I think our back four is starting to become quite solid. I really like the way that it plays together. you know we were under a lot of pressure and we yeah we did concede a lot of shots and it's I think Fabianzky definitely saved many blushes for the defence but if you actually look at the way that our defence has been playing compared to the start of the season it's infinitely better and I think his kind of leadership back there I think is definitely a big factor towards that you know we've got
00:15:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
three out of those fourth players had never played together before. You know, one of them wasn't even in the league and then two of them have come from other teams and kind of been thrown straight into there. So I think he fuzzak his time being at West Ham, he's been at West Ham for quite a few years now. So he understands the club and his general experience in the Premier League is how many more players have played more games than him. are I don't really know how many. I don't think it's too many to be honest. He's played a lot of games. So Yeah, I think generally the the way that he's able to influence the team is only positive and I'm just really happy for him.
00:16:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's also already sound bloke as well. So yeah, really happy for him.
00:16:05
Josh Keech
It's funny that you've said that his biggest thing was composure, obviously, with but is the big names back in the day without you know his time asking him flat down.
00:16:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
ma landscapesky
00:16:12
Josh Keech
Yeah.
00:16:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
doesn't exist my it's a my
00:16:14
Josh Keech
It's what happens when you get players from, you know, people think that they're bad and they come to us in the show how great they are. i think I think that's probably one of our greatest assets for some of the players that we... That's a good message, I think, for some of our transfers in the future is, you know, we look at...
00:16:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah let us sign and be amazing
00:16:28
Josh Keech
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Don't dan go all the way.
00:16:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
um good mcdeva
00:16:33
Josh Keech
There's limitations to what I say there. Anthony's, I think, he's an exception to the rule. I don't want to see him do some 360s on the pitch. so um no it's ah yeah It's an interesting one with all of that stuff, but I do think he's really showed that his his prowess is still there. and As we said about having a reliable second choice keeper, even the Arsenal guy said it a few weeks ago, obviously, that you know, actually been surprisingly decent and even they they were surprised. So it's one of those now as we move on to our next section, obviously looking forwards after the match, we' we're going to take a quick word first from one of our sponsors.
00:17:31
Josh Keech
Right then. I'm not going to touch too much on upcoming matches, obviously, because I know we're going to be talking about that later in the week as we, as we go. So my, my big

Fullkrug's Playtime Debate

00:17:40
Josh Keech
kind of moving forwards news is firstly, do you think the full crew so far has done enough to secure more game time, but equal as much reckoning starts in the next coming weeks?
00:17:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:17:54
Josh Keech
Okay. Nice.
00:17:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
but That's it.
00:17:56
Josh Keech
Yeah. i
00:17:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
like ah Yes, like he his quality is...
00:18:00
Josh Keech
Yeah.
00:18:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
like by far in a way been lacking from our squad you know when you look at the window he is one of the reasons it was so good because he was quite you know he's quite desirable obviously his age profile isn't amazing but the amount of money that we signed for and the sort of pedigree that we've been getting him from, you know, Dortmund and playing for Germany. He is someone that knows how to score. So when we do have games like this, you know, how many only recently the beginning of the season was terrible. But the reason it started to improve slightly. And we've been having games where we have been creating opportunities. We just haven't been scoring a lot. So you'd hope that as he gets integrated into every match day and he starts to get more minutes and then hopefully start starting games. so
00:18:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
he will definitely be able to make a massive impact and start scoring some goals. Because I think we have the quality to give him the service, you know, that that Jared Bowen link up, I hope can cook up something quite tasty, to be honest, because, you know, it seems like Jared Bowen is involved in everything positive that we do.
00:18:57
Josh Keech
Yeah.
00:19:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I can't see how the addition of a striker or a full crew quality isn't only going to make Bowen better and

Season Reflections & Transfer Rumors

00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
improve his assist numbers as well. So yeah, ah yeah he has to start.
00:19:13
Josh Keech
Now, you might be wondering why I asked you such a question. I think we both agree on anyway. Now, the reason for it is I've been kind of looking at the season so far with a bit of a kind of reflective reflective aspect to it.
00:19:24
Josh Keech
And also going forward, now we're getting up to the sort of Christmas point. And I can never kind of work out right now, whether it be glass half full ah or glass half empty. And I think it's tricky because if you look at this game, for example, as ah as a one off,
00:19:41
Josh Keech
I, uh, just think that there's, there's some good, some bads, obviously bomb withdraw at the moment has been one where you look and go, you know, you know good form takes decent height, the heart of the table doing quite well.
00:19:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have a lot of questions from the audience.
00:19:55
Josh Keech
We, you know, we should be in good against teams like that, but. last night home team shouldn't be drawing. We should be getting some wins. We've got old enough of the wins we should be getting so far this season, like the games like Everton. and I ah really just think there's a few games we look at and go we should have won there. We should have won there as well. And I think that we've been done a bit hard in that sense. So now we're kind of, where where do a lot of West Ham fans sit? Because we kind of, there's there's the optimistic side of it, looking back and thought crew is one of those big news. is I think we're
00:20:27
Josh Keech
People are kind of splitting this positive and negative side from a West Ham perspective, at least up until Christmas. And I'm probably more glass half empty, I think, as we look into it. But I think we need to take some of the positives going forward. And there's some dangerous rumors coming round about Arsenal looking at us with a few of our players. I'm not going to jinx it by saying which ones, but I think everyone knows which ones are getting looked at. But I think we're going to have to start looking at the optimistic players as we go into the new year.
00:20:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I heard um Arsenal really want to sign Aaron Crespo, which is going to be so difficult for us. I'm really scared about that, to be honest. um
00:21:03
Josh Keech
ah ah I wouldn't let him go.
00:21:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I genuinely, I actually would be sad, like that's kind of a joke, but then also kind of not, I really don't want Aaron Crespo ever to leave. I want him to retire at West Ham and then become part of the coaching staff, like, you know, take the noble route and become one of the people who's a big influence on the club. um Your glass,
00:21:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
your comments about glass half full and glass half empty I think my feeling of it is best described in this analogy so I think that West Ham right now is like you're in a car driving down a very bumpy road and the glass is on top of the car you forgot it was there so as you're driving it looks like the glass is pretty empty and it is pretty empty like it is pretty empty but
00:21:32
Josh Keech
Oh.
00:21:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then when you start getting a little bit of speed, when we start playing a bit better, when we score a couple of goals and we get a win, it looks like it's more full because it's rattling around and you know it's kind of creeping up the sides of the cup. And you're thinking, maybe it is more full than I think it is. And then you slow down and it kind of levels off and it looks really empty and it's really depressing. So that is how I feel like our season is going so far. It's very much start, stop, start, stop.
00:22:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
all glass might be getting, them it might be maybe more full than I thought it was.
00:22:15
Josh Keech
Yeah.
00:22:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh no, it is pretty empty. It is pretty terrible. So yeah, that that's my

West Ham's Fluctuating Form

00:22:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
rogue analogy. Hopefully that makes sense. It does in my head.

Let's hope so. But ah no, i i do i do I do agree with you. I actually do follow along. And I think you're right. It can be very deceiving from our perspective about how things are actually going. But that it does feel very disjointed. I think with the every time there's a a looming threat, the lobster egg is going to get sacked. Everyone performs a masterclass performance. Rumors go down, back to normal. Then an awful result comes in. And then back to the lu you but back to the rumors coming back again. And it's it's just this kind of ever-sensing danger that keeps encroaching. and the negative results emphasize it the positive results take it away and no one can really work out where they sit and it's probably a lot of people on the fence at the moment with what things are just going on so it's a bit of a nervous one as we head into January and it's one that I'm not looking forward to but we've got a few more games coming in between first to hopefully shine a light and hopefully give us some more glass half full approaches to to things so that's uh that's my general thoughts on it but along with the game obviously paired with that I think it's one of those things where

we look at it and go yes we probably you know we should be looking at winning every game we can and we should have won that game it's just unfortunate with the unlucky nature of a free kick that's gone really well you know i think back to some of the years before we had that Masiwaki one against uh Chelsea wasn't it the the uh the very unlucky one that for them that was just amazing for us but but yeah so i think there's some of those times we get to say the fact that we've played well, we've got the wrong result. But actually, you know, relatively okay result against ah a decent performing team right now. We look at it half full and say, you know what, we've done we've done well.

Yeah, I completely agree. It's just whether you look at it through the lens of, oh, you know, we we could have lost, but we didn't and we played okay. So it maybe is a slight step forward or do you go, that wasn't good enough. We need to be winning that. We need to be scoring more goals and conceding less

chances and, you know, not giving away silly free kicks at the end of the game. So.

Yeah, I think I'm probably somewhere in the middle. I'm like fence sitting a little bit because I just don't know when it's been so up and down. You you know, it seems like every time we get annoyed that a performance has been bad, we play well and every time.

play really well we're like oh yeah we you know we passed this poor patch we're gonna turn a corner then it goes terrible again so I think I'm just gonna sit nicely on the fence in the middle with my glass that is probably a bit empty but I'm just wiggling it around to make it look like it's got more in it um and that's where I'm gonna stay for now and then I guess we'll see it bright and if it's gonna rain and fill my cup up or someone's gonna push me off the fence and I'm gonna drop my glass everywhere and and cry basically.
